Paul Simon: One-Trick Pony (1979)

This is the only Paul Simon record I’ll ever own and here’s six reasons why: John Tropea, Dave Grusin, Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Steve Gadd, and Ralph MacDonald. They represent a curious era I’m still getting to know and their sounds perfectly define what I think of it. Those musicians are why I discovered Simon’s soundtrack-album as some of them perform and even star in it along with The B-52′s, Lou Reed, Tiny Tim (!) and more. So when WUSB’s Joi (Hygge) discussed it on-air with her father, I knew I had to have it. (Update: I acquired it at Patchogue’s Record Stop.) What’s wild is someone at my station who’s half my age knows and appreciates Seventies jazz / fusion like I do. I’m already familiar with Tropea, Gale, and Grusin’s work (and partially Gadd) and the soul of One-Trick Pony lines up with how I personally see and feel about the Seventies, so there’ll be no dispute about me enjoying this on Simon album. Now, I’m on the lookout for the motion picture.

First off, I'm bi. Secondly, all that matters to me is that I not look baggy in front of prospective clients. As long as nobody from any dealership or manufacturer branch has to see my face on a webcam, it's baggy tees under a blazer, with the occasional flatcap or fedora to keep the bald spot insulated. As for Sarah, she's been in full-on Halloween Hygge since the move, and all three of us appreciate the occasional rustic fleece pattern. If we were image-conscious, I wouldn't parade my Nerd Cred around and Sarah wouldn't treat our throw pillows like extensions of her desk.

Autumn Hygge

Slowly, slowly the days have started to shorten. My dark mornings last long and the evenings encroach more quickly. The months of summer have slipped away and holidays and the year’s end loom. School buses pass through the neighborhood and it’s time to pack summer away and welcome autumn back.

I have an autumn soul. Blame my Mom who instilled a deep love of Yankee autumn in her southern born-and-raised children. Blame Tolkien, Harry Potter, or Watership Down. Blame a love of holidays. Blame years of working in the fashion industry: wool and cashmere are so much better than flimsy cotton tees. The changing of the leaves, the hope of coolness creeping in, rain, wind, it’s all so refreshing after summer’s endless heat. Because I love this season, it’s almost hard for me to define Hygge in autumn. It’s so ingrained.

Autumn is a mood, a feel, a settled, deep happiness. It’s like a cloak you wear from September-November. Each month, as Liz says, is “getting richer” and deeper in its magic, culminating at Thanksgiving with a mighty feast before we slip into winter. (My second favorite season.)

Jake Reviews: Breathing

Breathe in.

Okay. I can already feel the eye roll. Maybe the above won’t come as a surprise after I reviewed the rain however, to review breathing may seem a little, audacious. And I completely understand that. How can someone review breathing, well I suppose I’m not actually going to be reviewing breathing. No, I’m going to be looking at taking a breath. Still too audacious?

Every weekend I have a few pieces in mind for what I’m going to write about and then ofcourse a random thought comes into my head moments before I start writing and you bet that’s the one I end up going with. But how did we get to the idea of reviewing taking a breath. Well, I was gazing out of my window as I think we know by now is what I’m doing most of the time, I was listening to Lo-Fi Lia and I felt very hygge. I’m wearing one of my favourite tops which is in a warming orange colour, for those keeping note it is a long sleeve waffle note which really are the top tier tee, and the temperate was just right. In that moment of stillness I took a breath and felt myself fall away to the breath. Letting the act of breathing consume you for a moment as you let your body relax and your mind let go. I know, that may sound silly when you read it but I’m sure we all know that feeling. It is a stillness, a feeling of comfort and relaxation that we’re all looking for and we can get by taking a breath, or preferably three deep ones.

I have spoken about being hygge many times before and have written full pieces delving into it. And with trying to pursue those feelings of gentle comfort, breathing is key. Again, I am fully aware that sounds ridiculous but stay with me here. For breathing is often overlooked. For most of us we do it without thinking and only when someone mentions the act do you start to feel the actual sensation of drawing breaths in and out. This breathing is all well and good, I mean it serves a purpose, but what I’m talking about today is taking a beat, and taking a deep breath. Preferably take three deep breaths as this is what calms your body down. Even if you were completely irate, upset or stressed, three deep breaths will hoodwink your body into thinking it’s relaxed and in doing so your mind will start to get with the programme aswell. See, breathing is quite useful after all.

All of this really is to serve as a reminder to breathe. Even if you’re completely relaxed, take a moment to look up from what you’re doing and let your eyes wander and take a deep breath and enjoy that moment of peace. If you’re finding yourself in a different emotional state then absolutely do take a breath too and feel that wave of everything will be okay wash over you. It’s an everyday act but one that is so often overlooked and whilst I know it is a little silly to write a whole piece about it I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to take that moment. Take a beat, feel hygge and, well, breathe.

I’ve also come to realise recently, especially after the anniversary of the blog, that stillness and being hygge is truly at the centre of my writing and so I hope that this piece on breathing fits into the series on being hygge and taking those moments and you can remember all of the above when you need it and even when you don’t.

Last spring, I experimented a fair bit with my vintage chic sweater pattern, and one of the results was this chocolate brown cropped version with short sleeves.
