It's so insane to me that so many Christmas movies and specials have families hunting for a tree days or hours before the holiday. Or waiting until the last minute to decorate it.
As if the stores haven't been selling Christmas decor since mid-October.
Is this a common thing I'm unaware of? Growing up, we always put our tree up on Thanksgiving, or if we were getting a real tree, we'd go out the day after Thanksgiving to get. You can't leave it up long, why wait until the last minute?

All this last minute stuff gives me anxiety.

Favorite Christmas Specials Countdown #8
The Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Tree (1979)
First Aired: December 3, 1979 on NBC
Favorite Quote: “Christmas excitement was mounting. The waiting was down to 10 hours and counting!”
I’ve always loved the The Berenstain Bears. My Dad and Mom would take turns reading the books before bed when I was a kid. This was another special we had on VHS so it’s one that’s been with me forever. I really love how the entire special is narrated in rhyming couplets. The Bear Family learning that the real meaning of Christmas is being with your loved ones and not just your decorations always resonated with me. I really love the song that the family sings throughout the special about looking for a Christmas Tree. The end song always makes me tear up a little too. I really hope you all check this one out.
You can watch it for free on Youtube!

(please don’t reblog) (picture removed)
This is me and my Dad.  He passed away four years ago today.  He was 83 years old.  While the passing of a parent is always going to be an emotional quagmire, his quality of life had deteriorated to the point that his passing brought a certain measure of relief.  Since the coronavirus pandemic, I’ve contemplated the small mercy that is not having to deal with the fact that he would have been locked in a long-term care facility, his dementia causing him to wonder why his family wasn’t visiting him.
I think about him all the time.  I’ve got his fine, wavy hair and his narrow, high-arched feet.   His aptitude for math and his pigheaded stubbornness.  My son, his only grandson, shares his name.  When my brothers and I yawn, we make the same descending chord of three sounds.  It’s really weird.   When I’m in nature, it’s Dad’s voice I hear in my head, commenting on the types of trees and rocks, which way the wind is blowing and what fraction of the route remains.  Maybe that’s why I hike - because when I do, he’s always with me.
He was born during the Depression.  The Hungry Thirties, he would call it.  His father ran a logging locomotive, which meant they were the rare family who could afford to eat, but you could see how it shaped him.   Leaving food on your plate was tantamount to spitting in the face of God.  There was nothing the man couldn’t fix.  He placed his faith in arable land, livestock, and the type of friendship common in the working class - you didn’t send Christmas cards, but you’d give a kidney without batting an eyelash.
He was 42 when I was born, and I was 42 the year he died.  There’s a mathematical elegance to that he would have appreciated.    He quit school when he was 12 to go to work in the woods, but he was almost mystically gifted when it came to numbers.   When he was 17, he lost three fingers on his right hand at the second knuckle, feeding raw lumber into a planer saw.  His boss lied about his age when filing the report, and he received a tiny monthly stipend for the loss until he finally retired.  He taught himself to write with his left hand, but asked me how to spell the names of common vegetables as he wrote out the weekly grocery list in his cautious, old-fashioned script.   I remember sitting on his lap as a little girl, and listening to him struggle to read the Berenstain Bears aloud to me.
He was the smartest man I know.
They say that Scots are thrifty, and if that’s true then he was quintessentially Scottish.   Hunting for coupons and buying items in bulk gave him an unreasonable amount of pleasure.   The clothes that weren’t suitable for town became work-clothing (he had very high standards of dress for someone who came home covered in oil and sawdust most days).  When they were too torn to wear for work, they became rags.  When the rags were too soiled... well... the rags were never too soiled.   On our farm, we raised Black Angus cows and Ayrshire pigs and there was always a Collie around to herd them.  He rarely swore in polite company, but it was ‘dog-shite’, not ‘dog-shit’ when you stepped in it.  Every year a logging truck backed down our driveway and deposited a load of raw logs at least a dozen feet high.   Dad would power up his chainsaw and start bucking.  Sharpen his axe, and start chopping.  Day after endless day, after working an eight hour shift at the mill, he’d come home and face that pile.  And cord by cord, it was barked, chopped, and stacked in our woodsheds, to be burned all winter to heat our house.  He was tireless in the face of hard labour.
A few days after he died, I stood in front of a congregation of people who loved him, in the church where I was baptized.   I told them many of the same things I’ve written here today.  Here is how I ended his eulogy:
He is no longer here, but we will remember him, because he is everywhere.
He was the best person I know.
