Russell has no regrets over soft tyre gamble after crash leaves him eighth | 2022 Canadian Grand Prix
George Russell said he was glad he risked running a set of soft tyres as the track dried in the closing stages of Q3, despite the crash with left him eighth on the grid. The Mercedes driver was the only one of the 10 competitors in Q3 to risk changing to slick tyres. Team mate Lewis Hamilton suggested it to his team, but was sent out on intermediates. Fernando Alonso asked if any drivers were running on slicks and was told the Mercedes pair were running on intermediates. However Russell had decided to switch to slick tyres, having noticed how quickly the track had dried at previous rounds. “I was surprised in Monaco how quickly it transitioned,” he said. “I was surprised on other occasions how quickly it transitioned. “It just takes half a dry line and everything changes. I think half the track was totally dry. Another quarter of the track there was a small dry line and then the last quarter which was turn one and two, it was just on its way. It just takes one corner. But at the end of the day, we’re here to fight for more.” Russell skidded off at turn two on his first full lap on the slicks and damaged the rear of his car against a barrier. He said he was trying to prepare his lap for a final push at the end of the session. “I realised it was going to be very tricky but I thought with a warm-up lap that last lap may have been the one.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free Gallery: 2022 Canadian Grand Prix qualifying day in pictures “I’m glad I went for it because it could have paid off,” he added. “I want to fight for pole position. I’m not here to settle for P3, P4. “I think we had a good car today. I saw the dry line appearing and it only takes one corner to let you down and for me that was turn one and two.” Last year Russell took a surprise third on the grid for the Russian Grand Prix in similar circumstances. “It happened last year in Sochi when I was one of three drivers to go from inters to slicks and I qualified P3 with a Williams,” he said. “So it’s high risk, high reward. It didn’t pay off today but the race is tomorrow.” However he admitted that in retrospect he would have been better off pitting at the end of his out-lap on slicks and switching back to intermediates. However, after he damaged his car “it was too late to come into the pits,” he said. “In hindsight I probably should have pitted after the out lap back to inters and that would have given me one lap at the end to go for it.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free 2022 Canadian Grand Prix [catlist id=42446 numberposts=5]Browse all 2022 Canadian Grand Prix articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net

FIRST MAN IN SPACE Yuri (sometimes Romanized as Yury) Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet Air Force colonel best known for his flight on Vostok 1, making him the first human in orbit around the Earth. Gagarin was born in Klushino, Russia in 1934. He enjoyed playing hockey and basketball, and his favorite pastimes included space, planets, and aeronautics. On March 27, 1968, Gagarin was killed when his fighter jet crashed in Novosyolovo near the town of Kirzach in the Soviet Union. He was 34 years old.
Gagarin's home town of Gzhatsk, Russia was renamed Gagarin after his death. Gagarin had three siblings and his parents were peasants on a state farm. Their family suffered from the Nazi occupation during World War II, and spent most of the occupation living outdoors when their home was converted into a German officer's quarters. The Gagarin family moved to Gzhatsk in 1946. In 1955, Gagarin entered military flight training at Orenburg, Russia, and married Valentina Goryacheva in 1957. After receiving his flight wings he was stationed near the Norwegian border. In 1959 Gagarin became a Senior Lieutenant in the Soviet Air Force. Gagarin was chosen for the Soviet manned spaceflight program in 1960 along with 19 other air force pilots. From this group of nineteen the first Vostok (English: Orient) pilots were selected for a group called Sochi. This group underwent the most severe physical and psychological training. Gagarin, along with another member of Sochi named Gherman Titov, were selected as the two best candidates for the first Vostok flight. One of the deciding factors was height, because of the small space inside the Vostok capsule. At the time of his selection, Gagarin was just 1.6 meters tall. In August 1960, a Soviet Air Force doctor evaluated Gagarin's personality as modest and intelligent with an extraordinary memory. He was described as having a strong imagination and quick reactions to his surroundings. It was among these traits that led to Gagarin's selection for the Vostok 1 mission. Gagarin's mission was Vostok 1 (officially Vostok 3KA-3). Two missions prior to Vostok 1 also used the Vostok 3KA spacecraft – these were Vostok 3KA-1 and Vostok 3KA-2. Officially these were designated as Sputnik 9 and Sputnik 10 in the west, to conceal their true missions. On March 9, 1961, Vostok 3KA-1 carried the mannequin Ivan Ivanovich (the Russian equivalent of John Doe), a dog named Chernushka, some mice and a guinea pig into one orbit around the Earth. The mannequin was ejected an parachuted to the ground, and Chernushka was recovered unharmed. Two weeks later on March 25, Vostok 3KA-2 carried the Ivanovich mannequin, a dog named Zvezdochka (“Little Star” in English; the name was suggested by Gagarin), television cameras and various scientific apparatus into one orbit around the Earth. The mannequin and Zvezdochka were both recovered. On April 12, 1961, Vostok 1 was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome Site 1 in modern-day Kazakhstan (officially, launch occurred from Tyuratum – the Soviets insisted this was the launch site in order to conceal the location of the true launch center). The launch vehicle was a Vostok-K rocket, a member of the R-7 rocket family of which the modern day Proton rocket is a member. Gagarin's callsign was Lastochka (English: Sparrow). Launch occurred at 6:07 am. The entire mission was controlled from the ground. At 6:09 the booster rockets fell away from the main stage, and the shroud covering the space capsule were released at 6:10, exposing Gagarin's window, which was between his feet. Gagarin reported at 6:13, “The flight is continuing well. I can see the Earth. The visibility is good. I almost see everything. There's a certain amount of space under cumulus cloud cover. I continue the flight, everything is good.” Mission controllers were not able to verify that Vostok 1 had reached a stable orbit for 17 minutes after loss of signal. At 6:25 am, as Gagarin passed the Kamchatka Peninsula, he requested information about his flight path. Mission controllers informed him that they did not yet have his orbital parameters. At 6:49 am Gagarin reported he was on the night side of the Earth. At 7:25 am, the the onboard attitude control system oriented Vostok 1 for retrofire over Angola. Reentry occurred over Egypt. Mission controllers sent a command to Vostok 1 for the service module to separate from the spherical crew module. However, the two sections remained connected for ten minutes during reentry. This caused strong gyrations inside the spacecraft. Gagarin reported up to 10g during reentry. Seven kilometers above the ground, Gagarin ejected from his spacecraft and landed safely ten minutes later (officially, Gagarin was said to have landed inside the vehicle – the Soviets insisted this was the case to receive verification from the FAI, and it was not released that Gagarin landed separately from his spacecraft until 1971). The Vostok parachute was released at 3 kilometers altitude. Two schoolgirls described the Vostok as a huge ball that fell, bounced, then fell again. The Vostok's first impact left a giant crater. Gagarin said that when he landed, he encountered a farmer and his daughter. Gagarin was wearing a bright orange suit with a white helmet. Gagarin recalled, “When they saw me in my space suit and the parachute dragging alongside as I walked, they started to back away in fear. I told them, Don't be afraid, I am a Soviet citizen like you, who has descended from space and I must find a telephone to call Moscow!” Officially, the United States congratulated the Soviet Union on its accomplishment. Other world leaders had mixed reactions to the flight, many voicing their concerns over the Soviet Union's true intentions regarding their apparent rocket power. After the flight of Vostok 1, Baikonur Cosmodrome Site 1 was renamed Gagarin's Start. Gagarin became a worldwide celebrity after his flight. He was toured in Italy, Germany, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Egypt and Finland. This sudden rise to fame led to a drinking problem and substantial weight gain for Gagarin, and attention from women took a toll on his marriage. It was rumored that Gagarin once jumped out of a second-floor window in a hotel, resulting in a large cut above his left eye that remained visible for years. On March 27, 1968, Gagarin and flight instructor Vladimir Seryogin were killed when their MiG-15 fighter jet crashed near Chkalovsky Air Base. Gagarin was 34 years old. The cause of the crash is not currently known and has been subjected to many conspiracy theories. An investigation into the crash was conducted by the KGB. Air traffic controllers had provided Gagarin with a poorly written weather report and left external fuel tanks attached to the aircraft. Gagarin's aircraft may have struck a bird and entered an uncontrollable spin, leading to an impact with the ground at a speed faster than Mach-1. Another theory suggests that the crew detected an open vent which led to oxygen deprivation in the cabin. Gagarin then followed procedure by entering a steep dive to reach a lower altitude. The crew then lost consciousness and never pulled out of the dive. In 2011, the results of an investigation into the crash conducted by an official Soviet agency were released. The original conclusion was that Gagarin had maneuvered sharply to avoid a weather balloon, causing the aircraft to stall. Even in death, Gagarin retains a legacy as an extraordinary public figure. When he visited Manchester it was pouring rain, however Gagarin insisted that his parade vehicle keep its cover back so that the crowds could see him. He said, “If all these people have turned out to welcome me and can stand in the rain, so can I.” He refused an umbrella and remained standing for the entire parade. - R Atkinson Image: A 27-year-old Yuri Gagarin awaits liftoff in the cabin of his Vostok 3KA-3 spacecraft, designated Lastochka, or Sparrow. The cabin was a sphere just 2.3 meters across. One-touch, easy access to the third row is equipped on all models, and enhanced ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link and 20-inch alloy wheels are included on most grades.
The provocative all-new QX55 rolled into U.S. dealerships last spring, bringing back an iconic silhouette for the brand and returning to the luxury crossover-coupe segment INFINITI created with the groundbreaking FX. Deliveries of the all-new 2022 INFINITI QX55 have exceeded expectations for INFINITI in its first few months and increased showroom traffic, the effect helping to drive monthly sales records for the QX50 mid-size crossover earlier this year.
INFINITI pronounced its arrival in New York with a stunning reveal at the Oculus Transportation Hub featuring an installation by renowned artist Daniel Wurtzel. The installation, called "Sine Wave," features a dynamic display created by fabric and fans. ( booboo stewart, 26, genderqueer ) I just bumped into [ LEMONGRASS "LEMON" KIAIYO ] the other day while walking down [ EAST ] Kingsboro, where [ HE/THEY] live. I hear they can be [ PURE HEARTED ] and [ DAFT ], but when I think of them I immediately think about [ PLAYING GUITAR AT A BONFIRE, HANGING OFF OF THE ROOF OF A SKYSCRAPER FOR FUN, THE SMELL OF FRESH CUT WOOD ] ( ella, 26, they/them, est )
{ fire tw, death tw, missing child tw }
FULL  NAME  ,  NICKNAME(S)  : lemongrass sochi kiaiyo
AGE  ,  DOB  ,  ZODIAC  :  twenty - six , june 28  ,  cancer
HOMETOWN  :  elmon cape, marshall islands
GENDER  ,  PRONOUNS  :  genderqueer,  she / they
ORIENTATION  : pansexual  ,  panromantic
OCCUPATION  : courier / artist
LANGUAGE(S)  SPOKEN  :  english  -  fluent  ,  marshallese - fluent , spanish - fluent , arabic - fluent , russian - fluent , mandarin - conversational , french - conversational
FAMILY LIFE: born on a deep-sea research ship somewhere in the middle of the pacific ocean, lemongrass is the oldest of three. when he was two years old, just before his sister sage was born, his parents moved to an international research center in the elmon cape of the marshall islands to study the local shark population. when lemon was thirteen, their little sister saffron was born. the three siblings were inseparable, just as much best friends as they were family. {tw: fire, death} when lemon was sixteen, he and his friend were trying to make homemade fireworks, and caused a fire that killed three people, including his parents. {end tw}
PRE-KINGSBORO LIFE: lemongrass and his sisters were sent to live with family in america, and lemon soon learned that the american high school system was not made for kids like him. he began to act out, skipping school to smoke weed in the woods behind a taco bell, making friends with the wrong people, and eventually dropping out of school all together when he turned 18. one night, lemon snuck out of his bedroom window to go to a party. he didn’t know that saffron, almost six at the time, had followed him out into the street. {tw: missing child} when he returned in the early hours of the morning, he was met by police officers. saffron had never made it back into the house, and hasn’t been seen since. {end tw}. he stuck around until the police stopped investigating, and then took off, using his inheritance to travel the globe.
KINGSBORO LIFE: it’s been eight years since he left home, and lemon is ready to find a new one. he landed in kingsboro by mistake, about six months ago, when they got off the greyhound to grab some food and missed getting back on. so, a strong believer in fate, they decided to stay. they’ve found freelance work as a courier for people they probably shouldn’t be working for, but as long as they’re fast and quiet and never ask questions, they make decent money. they’re looking for a more permanent job now that they’ve decided to stick around kings for a bit.
DREAMS & GOALS: lemon is a creative, passionate artist. while most of their work is abstract paintings, they are currently working on a portrait series highlighting missing children forgotten by the american justice system. they are hoping to one day get a chance to have the paintings hung in a real gallery with an audience of people who have the power to help, but for now they post them anonymously on an instagram account dedicated to the project. he also has a second anonymous insta dedicated to photos he’s taken at the top of skyscrapers, where he likes to risk death for the perfect photo.
PERSONALITY: lemon is...very, very dumb. they are a good, sweet child, but very dumb. except when it comes to languages. they grew up surrounded by many different languages, and so from a young age, was always able to pick them up quickly. lemon can be an immature, childish person, but he’s got a good head on his shoulders and will always do the right thing. he seems to have been born without the ability to feel fear so he is pretty much always doing something dangerous.
WANTED CONNECTIONS:
PARTNER IN CRIME; one might call them best friends, but with the amount of trouble they get into, partners in crime is more fitting. they’re the first person lemon goes to for everything, including dank memes, this wicked dog he saw on the street, and this cool new song he heard. ( @claudiafernandez96 )
BAD INFLUENCE;  lemon is easily swayed to the dark side, he’s reckless and impulsive and is pretty much down for anything. he needs someone to corrupt him a little and get him into even more trouble.
GOOD INFLUENCE; lemon is a soft boy, but he can be very hard on himself. he needs someone in his life who will encourage him to drink water, sleep more than a few hours a week, and maybe even eat a vegetable. they support and encourage each other, cheering each other on. ( @booknerdaurora )
SPOUSE-ISH; they met, married, and parted ways all in the same alcohol-fuelled weekend. they were extremely drunk and got married quite suddenly, but by the time they sobered up, all they has was the memories and the rings, no paperwork to be found. nobody is actually sure if they’re legally married or not, but lemon likes to teas them by calling them his spouse anyway.
CASUAL HOOKUP/FWB/ONE NIGHT STAND; lemon has literally zero game but somehow people still find his dorkiness charming. well, that and the fact that he’s gorgeous and yet somehow doesn’t realize it.
CLOSE FRIENDS; lemon is just now starting to build and maintain solid, lasting relationships with people he otherwise would have eventually lost touch with. each friendship is different, but it’s time for lemon to have a circle of people he can rely on; a new family. ( @codyhq, @travhq )
EXES; because he had little interaction with people his own age until he was sixteen, lemon can often miss very important social cues, often leading to any relationships or flirtationship breaking down unexpectedly. he also doesn’t like staying in one place for too long, and has probably left a trail of broken hearts around the world.
he’s very open, please feel free to message me at any time for more!

( shawn mendes, twenty three, cis male, he/him, cousin ) Did anyone else just see LEON VASILE ? I hear for the VASILE family they can be a bit INCONSIDERATE & RUTHLESS. But I also heard they can be LOYAL & DISCERNING. If you dare I hear they frequent UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO in their spare time when they aren’t being an BOYEVIK. Tread carefully or else you might be next on their list !
P E R S O N A L I T Y positive traits: discerning, charming, patient negative traits: ruthless, aggressive, inconsiderate mbti: entp moral alignment: neutral evil
L I F E S T Y L E birthplace: sochi, russia occupation: visual arts mfa student / boyevik religion: russian orthodoxy languages spoken: russian ; ukrainian ; english ; portuguese ; spanish hobbies: attending sports games, music, going to galleries, reading, running
P H Y S I C A L hair colour: dark brown height: six foot two disorders: insomnia tattoos: four piercings: ears
F A M I L Y parents: anton nikolayevich vasile, maria de castanheira (married) siblings: three younger brothers, one older brother pets: one savannah cat
hey guys this is my son leon !
so his full name is actually leonardo rui de castaneheira vasile because i am an extra b*tch and leon is originally portuguese but so i’m gonna have his mother give him her father’s name (making him ¼ portuguese) and the rest russian so he fits in with the vasile family
not much is known about cousin leon - but they have all heard of him and for all accounts it’s for the best. his upbringing is shrouded in mystery but his skills with a gun or a knife speak for themselves. raised by parents who were decorated and prominent members of the former soviet kgb, he was unwittingly inured to the philosophy stoicism, raised by the mantra ‘we must do what needs to be done, because it must be done.’
he grew up away from the hustle and bustle of city life in moscow or st petersburg, but on the outskirts of the rural and wild caucasus mountains and forests of sochi where he was trained
if he told stories about how he was raised, you’d think he came from a family of monsters and the truth wasn’t that far removed. he was bred from stock that prioritised family and mother russia above all else. so when the call came from his distant cousins in chicago, he finished off jobs and assignments and left without question
he had no idea what he was supposed to doing in chicago, what the story was but after his crash course on the current situation all he did was laugh - he had entered a game of child’s play
the politics of chicago didn’t bother him, he has no tolerance for drama only for a target, a job or a mission
placed as a grad student at the university of chicago leon goes by his mother’s maiden name of castanheira and moves through the city with the ease of any regular charming wealthy international student - however the young man is just waiting for the moment his make - or hit - his mark

For the AU thing, can I get something for a Vicchan Lives AU? I know it probably won’t be as huge a leap from canon as other things, but like, the puppy.
Ahhh thank you Roa! I live for sweet prompts like that ♥♥♥ Also, this got out of control :’D
Vicchan survives, but at the time Yuuri has to skate his FS at the GPF in Sochi he doesn’t know the outcome yet, since Vicchan is still in treatment. He manages to pull his nerves a bit better together and misses the bronze by a narrow margin.
The banquet starts out normal. Yuuri hates it. He’s feeling exhausted, stiff and awkward and really doesn’t want to be there. Then, towards the later half of the evening Christophe comes over and manages to get Yuuri a bit more at ease.
Victor keeps a careful distance since Yuuri gave him the cold shoulder for the selfie earlier and waits for Christophe’s sign to join them at their table.
Meanwhile, Yuuri manages to drink more champagne than he should anyway, but mostly because he’s so relieved Vicchan made it. He becomes more and more talkative and Christophe winks Victor over.
Victor notices soon that Yuuri had a bit too much to drink and already shoots Christophe a few disapproving looks, but the other one just shrugs and shakes his head. This surely wasn’t on him. Trying to break the ice, Victor decides to use his premium gallery of Makka pictures on his phone.
When Victor starts showing Yuuri his beloved Makka and starts talking about her, Yuuri tears up. Victor panics. After some time he and Chris finally manage to calm Yuuri down again so he starts to talk.
Victor demands to see pictures as well and is of course head over heels for the small dog. (Chris follows the conversation of the two hopeless dog-lovers with a smile.)
Yuuri can’t quite believe he sits there with his idol Victor NIkiforov and talks about dogs (later on he’ll ask himself if he’d dreamed that).
After all the awkwardness in the beginning and the champagne, Yuuri feels restless and wants to get rid of some of his energy. He’s drunken enough to ask Victor to dance with him as soon as the next good song starts to play. Victor is taken by surprise and barely has the time to answer - when he finds himself already pressed against Yuuri on the dance floor and Yuuri starts to lead.
Christophe has a field day about all of this and makes sure to take photographs.
Victor is breathless. He was interested in his quiet rival before, but now he’s on a good way to become smitten with him. Still, he wants to get to know Yuuri, so after one of their dances he asks Yuuri to come to sit and talk with him for a bit. He learns about Yuuri’s feelings towards Celestino’s coaching style and sobers up quicker than he’d have liked. They keep talking about it and about skating. Victor opens himself more than he ever thought he would along the way.
Victor insists to bring Yuuri up to his room and after several tries manages to tell Yuuri that he’d like to keep in touch. He feels like a high schooler who just experiences his first crush. They exchange numbers and even a few minutes after Yuuri told him goodnight and disappeared into his room, Victor still stands outside the door, staring at it with a blush and a racing heart.
Victor does not message Yuuri. He tries several times, but Yuuri’s complete radio silence makes him insecure. He pines hard though.
Meanwhile Yuuri does ok at nationals, but withdraws from worlds in order to finish his degree. (At least that’s what he tells himself. The truth is he only has vague memories of the evening in Sochi. He knows he talked to Victor, and he’s sure that he at one point even cried, but that thought alone mortifies him enough.)
When Victor hears that Yuuri withdrew and “took a break from skating”, he finally messages Yuuri and asks him if he’d come to worlds in Japan, because he’d really like to see him again. First Yuuri wants to tell Victor that he can’t, but the more they talk, the more Yuuri actually wants to come.
They meet up at worlds and things start off a bit awkward again but then Victor insists that he wants to meet Vicchan, which is how he ends up in Hasetsu a few days later.
He finds out that Yuuri too has lost some of his passion and drive for skating so he quickly decides that they have to train together. They notice how well they work with each other and Victor forms the plan to take some time off to coach Yuuri…
