Thoughts on the new mountain goats album?
i really like it. i think it's some of jd's best songwriting in a while and the instrumentation is really good, lending the whole album this sense of warmth and mournful triumph. a lot of songs on it are very powerful and connected to me strongly -- 'fresh tattoo' convinced me to get a new tattoo lmao. the only thing that i think lets it down is john darnielle's vocal performance. e.g. i think that 'murder at the 18th street garage' will be a killer live song but the studio version just doesn't have enough energy or bite to it. overall it reminds me a lot of goths, in a good way. 'ground level', 'fresh tattoo', 'jenny iii' and 'going to dallas' are instant classics for me

Hybrid Theory!
Tumblr media
When we finished working on Hybrid Theory, we loaded the SUV (and then unloaded it because our gear didn't fit in it) and eventually headed east on Highway 10. Due to the confusion with the trailer, we had about 37 hours to get to St. Petersburg, Florida, and therefore did not have time to stop.
Tumblr media
The following year, we moved from playing in small clubs to headlining. At one of the concerts, Bob Dallas of the four of us came backstage and said that the promoter insisted that we play for 90 minutes. Our only album lasted 37 minutes. "We'll play it twice," we said.
Tumblr media
Every time we finished working on an album, we collected more and more gear, more and more travel bags and, fortunately, more and more songs. Including our favorite new material in the setlist was a privilege and a relief: it was a way to share the most vivid impressions of a series of creative adventures that spontaneously intertwined into a multifaceted whole.
Tumblr media
Looking back at the work done, you can take a fresh look at it. There is a through line here. Departure there. A little friendly fire combined with the need to express a familiar truth. Alternating one significant moment with another, I want to celebrate it withyou.
Tumblr media
What has already been done and what remains to be discovered is great. Something that has never been lost and that has always been here. Aspiration and triumph are like twenty tiny paper clippings....

Random MasterGuide AU, Part 6
[Link to Part 5 Here]
"Sir!" Kento acknowledged his superior with brisk efficiency.
Dallas wasn't heeding The Dentist's obvious triumph, and the hopelessness of the situation. As much as Bain silently willed the man to keep his goddamn mouth shut, the mastermind refused to do so.
"Jiro's been looking for you-"
"Bain and the Payday gang leader known as Dallas will be released shortly. You will be escorted onto a plane-"
"Your Dad Jiro, you know?"
Kento continued as there were no interruption at all, speaking clearly and unhurriedly.
"-where you will both be flown to your desired locations-"
"Dallas-" Bain hissed.
"-once we have secured the leverage we require." Kento's face remained perfectly stoic as he spoke, totally unaffected by Dallas' interjections and attempts to - what, exactly? Annoy Kento into beating them? Bain knew better than most not to piss off Kento, knew what lay behind that neutral visage. Kento was cruel in his precision, executing orders to hurt and maim without a moment's hesitation.
"As we know your secrets, so too have you learned some of ours." Dallas glanced at Bain.
"If you keep our secrets, we will keep yours." Kento raised a hand, placing it atop the camera.
"We will provide face coverings for Bain. Dallas shows his face. His body, too."
Bain blanched. He physically recoiled. He thought he heard a sharp intake of breath - and fought not to watch how The Dentist's grin grew bigger as Kento's words sunk in.
"What's wrong, Mr Steele?" The Dentist crowed, taking a step closer to the mastermind - Dallas immediately stepped away from him, finally level with Bain's side.
Kento continued. "We record Dallas cumming. The method doesn't matter - but his face remains visible at all times. This ensures your cooperation in keeping our secrets, and in turn we shall keep yours." His features sharpened, like a hawk spying its prey. "Failure to keep our secrets results in the footage being leaked, along with your name and last known location... Nathan."
Bain's eye shot to Dallas's face. Gone was the arrogant blustering of before, his talking back. Behind the bruising and blood the man had paled. All the insults he'd wanted to hurl at them had died - his stunned lips had flown wide apart.
"You're sick," he whispered. "You're a sick fucking bastard."

One Direction does not leave the collective imagination of the teen agers who lived them in the 10s of this millennium and if the triumph of Harry Styles is in everyone’s eyes, Louis Tomlinson’s new single “Bigger than me” has been released since September 1st and is the first taken from his second studio album, “Faith in the Future”, expected on November 11.
The album comes two years later from "Walls," the solo debut of the former One Direction that sold millions of copies worldwide. Written by Louis, Rob Harvey and Red Triangle himself and produced by Mike Crossey (The 1975 and Wolf Alice), "Bigger Than Me" is already doing very well in the charts but, as written, the fever for the former 1Ds is always high.
"While working on this record I realized that what was going on had magic. It looked like we were creating something capable of honoring the live show - says Louis -. I have always tried to be a humble person in this life, but there is a limit and a responsibility that comes from being in my position. I understood, by doing those shows what they mean to my fans and how everything I do is actually bigger than me. It's almost an achievement of the age of majority, putting aside the opinions I can have of myself, to think about what it could mean for other people."
For the new album, in addition to Crossey, Tomlinson collaborated big as Rob Harvey, Dan Grech (The Killers, The Vaccines, Halsey), Nico Rebscher (Alice Merton), Joe Cross (Courteeners) and Hurts frontman Theo Hutchcraft. Around the world with his World Tour, which has crossed the UK, Europe, the United States and South America, with 19 sold out concerts in Latin American palaces, a sold out at London’s Wembley Arena and a show at The Dome in Doncaster (his hometown) in front of his family who saw him cry for happiness.
The tour also arrived in Asia and Australia, with 9 other concerts all sold out. But Louis' journey is one step away from the end and tonight in Milan the curtain will come down. The show will be at the Snai San Siro Racecourse as part of the Milan Summer Festival but the debut for the return to Italy was lived on Wednesday at the Cavea of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome at the top of the capacity, and on September 1st at the Teatro Antico in Taormina with a show of 10 and praise. "Since last February's debut in Dallas - says Louis - I have crossed the United States and Canada, Latin America, Europe and the United Kingdom, Asia and Australia, for a total of 70 shows, and I haven't forgotten the live at the Assago Forum last April that excited me as I was at my first show. Playing live is the best part of my job.
These months around singing and playing flew in a moment and having your affection and such support in places even very far from home is something I never took for granted. Music is nothing without you and Italy has always welcomed me like few other states in the world. This is like going home.'

Footyworkfusion is finally here!
Unlocking Your Soccer Potential: A Holistic Approach by Samuel Maraver
“Dallas Cup Final in Dallas, Texas”
A passion for soccer
Soccer is more than a sport; it is a part of who I am in this world. I started my journey in the beautiful streets of Caracas, Venezuela when I was only three years old. Since then, I've navigated through diverse tiers of competition, from grassroots club skirmishes to prestigious international tournaments in Spain. Today, I stand poised to unravel the intricacies of success in the captivating world of soccer.
Emboldened by my own odyssey, I am fervently convinced that soccer transcends mere athletic pursuit—it serves as a conduit for personal and professional growth. The program that I offer covers all the possible areas that a real athlete needs to fulfill to become a true professional. Join me and together we will embrace this beautiful hardworking journey that will make your dreams a reality in a matter of time.
Cultivating Excellence from passion
Coming from Venezuela, a country in which we share an unconditional passion and joy for soccer. I had the privilege to form part of this beautiful sport at a very young age. Every water bottle, aluminum paper and wooden sticks represented an opportunity to turn it into a soccer ball with a goal. I was born with that passion for the game and a few years later at the age of eleven I moved with my family to the United States which allowed me to flourish my passion along with great opportunities playing at different levels along the soccer pyramid. I was able to master my left foot abilities along with my versatility playing as a left back on the field.
My journey has shaped my passion and allowed me to share that passion through this program. My program is a living representation of my experiences, tricks, and small details that differentiate amateur players from high quality professional footballers. This will not only form players in the field but also well-rounded individuals outside of the field.
“U-19 Category Division de Honor Tarragona, Spain”
Beyond the Field, Towards Life’s Triumphs
Beyond my record of wins and defeats, this sport brough me so many life lessons that have stuck with me forever. From helping teammates in need with equipment, to being the bigger person and helping the captain from my rival team with a cramp. These experiences that come from being part of this sport have shaped my character and my unique way of navigating through life like no other.
In my program, players will not only become better at different aspects of the game, but they will have an immense growth with cultural values and virtues that will help them in their daily lives.
Greatness in the making
My program offers players the ability to detect problems and ways to overcome them with a professional attitude. There are numerous factors that contribute to the overall making of a professional and mentality plays the most important part in it all. I emphasize a lot in this sector because if you have talent and discipline, but your mentality is in the wrong place you can be affected and fall short. Reaching the professional world of soccer takes a lot of risk and uncertainty but with my program you will have my guidance which will give you a significant advantage from average players that do not have a high-quality mentor.
The importance of unbreakable discipline
The greatest footballers in the world have one thing in common and that is that on their minds they are the best even when they really were not the best. Our daily lives have different challenges and difficulties that we must go through in order to be successful but when you are talking about the beautiful game you get mentally challenged every second of the match. Maintaining a positive, cold and clear mind will help you evolve in the game in a short amount of time.
Discipline is not just a good quality in a player, it is the pilar of success in this sport. My program emphasizes every single area that targets the fortification of the mind. This goes from overcoming a set back to being the main character and stepping up in a hard game.
A lot of people believe that soccer is a lot about who is the biggest and most physical player on the pitch, but they are wrong. This sport requires a mental aspect that a lot of people underestimate. Lionel Messi is the best example since he is the best player in the world not because he is big and strong but because he is quick, smart and he can make something from nothing.
My program meticulously addresses every facet aimed at fortifying the mind, from resilience in the face of setbacks to assuming leadership roles in challenging situations. Dispelling the notion that physical prowess reigns supreme on the soccer pitch, my program accentuates the significance of mental acuity.
Drawing inspiration from luminaries like Lionel Messi, it underscores the transformative power of mental agility in shaping one's soccer journey. Central to my program is the innovative practice of visualization, proven to enhance confidence and performance by envisioning success before it unfolds.
Building your path
If your inspiration is to become a professional footballer then you need to have a plan, a goal and a vision. These three components are key when working towards a big goal in your life. When you have your mind, body and soul compromised towards a goal you just focus on the steps necessary that will take you there while putting the distractions aside.
“MLS Next All-Star game Indio, California”
Mastering the Art of Soccer
Becoming the best version of yourself as a footballer includes having an exquisite technical aspect to the ball. Being able to read the game and adapt to it no matter what the field, the crowd and the weather is telling you. The more technical you are the less time you will spend on the ball, meaning that you will never be physically affected when the rivals come get the ball away from you. My program reflects and projects the most intricate technical drills that will help you play at the next level.
Our Vision and ultimate goal with the amazing program that we offer is for our clients to reach their full potential on and off the field. We want them all to reach their aspirations in the world of soccer along with making everyone the best versions of themselves along with a professional aspect to it.
My experiences along the way have taught me a lot about this beautiful sport, and it took me from the streets of Caracas to the international ground to learn all the information and material that I am sharing with you. The most personal tips along with world class drills that took me from a normal level all the way to the top. My mission is to take you to places above your imagination and my program is the right place to make it happen.
I want to talk about what my program means to me as we come to an end. It seems like a portion of my heart is being put into the game I love; it's not just a series of workouts or drills. My way of sharing what I've learned—sweat, tears, and moments of unadulterated joy—on the field is through this program. It's about character development, lifelong friendships, and creating memories—it's about more than just playing soccer. I want to be more than simply a coach via this program; I want to be a friend, a mentor, and someone who will always believe in you, even if you don't believe in yourself. So, let's put on our boots and take the world by storm, one kick at a time.

lets talk about tyler seguin brainrot because like he had triumph and tragedy very early on and then he was the party boy who everybody wagged their finger at and then once he finally decide to settle down and take everything seriously the guy hes soulbound himself to in the early days went the opposite of growth and turned into a asshole werido so now HE's suppose to be the adult who drags them to success
man are you the same person who asked me about the nolpat brain rot and the mtkachuk brain rot or are there just multiple people on this website that like seeing me spiral via essay? but yeah okay i can do segs brain rot. and i won't even write an essay this time. mostly. i lied.
but yeah okay. tyler drafted 2nd overall in 2010 to the bruins, a team that only had that pick because they got it from toronto. in reality, the bruins never should have picked that high because they had just come off a season where they made it to the second round of playoffs. of the top 15 picks in that draft, he had the best chance of winning a cup soon. and he did. 74 games in the season, 13 games in playoffs, a seven game finals series, and a stanley cup ring. then two more seasons under his belt, and he even made it back to the finals in 2013, but they lost six to chicago. and then things started to fall apart. boston trades him to dallas and the rumours and speculations follow him, saying he would rather party than practice and doubting his dedication to his team and it's just a really bad look when a team dumps a SOA after only three years, after winning a cup with him, after making it to the finals twice with him. bad look. but it's okay. he comes to dallas and the team help him build a home here and he finds a best friend in this guy who is about to become his captain too. something in dallas clearly clicked a switch in his brain, because he started playing beautiful hockey and his name and jamies are being tossed around together like crosby and malkin, and kane and toews, and ovechkin and backstrom. they were supposed to be winners together. supposed to make history, together. but dallas isn't like boston and they don't win immediately but it's fine because they're building something great still and tyler is willing to wait for that. he wants to win here too. he grows into himself as a person and as a leader and he eventually gets an A and he looks after rookies on and off the ice and he helps them avoid the same mistakes he made when he was just a kid with too much money and the world at his fingertips and dallas stars getting better and making deeper runs and then its 2020 and hes finally back. tyler seguin and the stanley cup finals meet once again. and tyler is the guy they're turning to for advice because he's the only guy who has been to the finals more than once in his career and he has a cup and there's not many other guys on the team who have that either. and they lose in six. and now its 2023 and a lot has changed. aside from jamie, he's been on the team the longest. and it's game three of the western conference finals and the captain just took a stupid penalty and got himself ejected from the game and everything falls apart again. the game goes to shit and they're down 3-0 in the series and jamie is suspended for two games but. but. they win those two games. they win and they win and then jamie is back and. they lose. 6-0. and his season ends in may.

Joe Mauldin, Jerry Allison And Buddy Holly On Their New Motorcycles
Today is the day the music died.
Buddy, Waylon & The Ariel Cyclone
February 3, 1959 — The Day the Music Died.
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson, and their pilot, Roger Peterson, die in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. Holly leaves behind millions of adoring fans, a pregnant wife and a legendary 1958 Ariel Cyclone Motorcycle.
May 13, 1958 - Buddy Holly and his Crickets bandmates, Joe Mauldin and Jerry Allison, land in Dallas after a world tour. They go straight to a Harley-Davidson dealership looking to buy three Harley 74 flatheads. The salesman is skeptical that the three young men from West Texas have the wherewithal to purchase three of his expensive motorcycles, and tells them so. Put off by the rude salesman, the boys go across town to Miller’s Triumph Shop. This time, Buddy introduces himself and produces a large amount of cash to ensure that it is known they are serious buyers. It is probably not necessary because Betty Miller, co-owner of the Shop with her husband, Ray, recognizes Buddy and the Crickets the moment they come in.
Mauldin picks out a red Triumph Thunderbird. Allison goes for a Triumph Trophy TR6A. Buddy buys the new 650cc Ariel Cyclone — one of only 200 ever made.
That summer, between tours and television appearances, Buddy and his friends are often seen riding their motorcycles around town in Lubbock.
October 1958 — Buddy Holly splits from The Crickets.
Early 1959 — Buddy Holly is touring the Midwest with his new band, including bassist Waylon Jennings. Also on the tour are rising artists Ritchie Valens and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson. The going is rough aboard cold, uncomfortable buses and, frustrated by the conditions, Holly charters a plane from a performance in Clear Lake, Iowa to the next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Holly bandmate Tommy Allsup and Valens toss a coin for a seat on the plane — Valens wins. Waylon surrenders his seat to Richardson, who is sick.
Buddy Holly & Waylon Jennings February 3, 1959, 12:30 am — Holly, Richardson and Valens take off with Peterson, their 21-year-old pilot. The rest is history. Buddy Holly was 22 years old when he died. Richardson was 28. Valens was 17. Waylon lives on to be one of the most legendary country music artists of all time.
Buddy’s father keeps his Ariel Cyclone until 1970 when he trades it to Nub Stovall, a local racer, for two Yamaha 55cc Trailmasters. Stovall sells the Ariel to another individual, who tries to resell it to a local Honda dealer, George McMahan, for $1000. McMahan wants the bike, but does not have the funds.
Waylon Receiving His Birthday Present 1979 — Former Crickets Mauldin and Allison want to do something special for the 42nd birthday of their old friend, Waylon Jennings. They track down Buddy’s motorcycle to the man who still owns it in Austin, Texas. They buy the bike and have it delivered to an empty hotel room in North Texas where Waylon is on tour. Upon seeing his gift — at midnight — the outlaw Waylon jumps on the bike and kick starts it right there in the hotel room, to the delight of the other guests. Waylon only rides the Ariel a couple times and then lends it to the Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville.
2002 — Waylon Jennings passes away.2014 — The Ariel is auctioned off as part of Waylon’s estate. George McMahon has his second shot at owning the legendary bike. (McMahan had done well as a land developer in Lubbock and now had the means to buy the Ariel.) At auction, the bike quickly is bid up to $475,000 and McMahan bows out, fearing he has missed his chance again.
But fate is with McMahan. The Ariel does not reach the seller’s minimum and does not sell at the auction. Jessi Coulter, Waylon’s widow, is taking offers based on price AND intended use. McMahan makes his offer and specifies his use — riding the bike just one time and then loaning it to he Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock. Done deal.
This is the incredible story of a legendary 1958 Ariel Cyclone, owned by two of the biggest legends in music history. Check it out at the Buddy Holly Center if you’re ever down in Lubbock — but note, no pictures allowed.

The entity in the bush whispers, "Don't panic, it's just me."
Darry yanked his arm away and hollered in a hushed tone, "Who the hell is me?"
"Shut up, it's Dal. Get in here before they see all of y'all, you twat."
All but one, dark, slim shadow followed instructions, all of them except Curly Shepherd. Curly ran up to the porch, then all movement stopped. He looked left and right, grabbed something, pressed the doorbell then ran. It looked like he was going 100 miles per hour and he came barreling towards the bushes. He dived into the bushes, and it became clear what he was holding, a giant bowl full of candy. A foolish smile stretched across his face in triumph. It faded suddenly when he heard hollering from behind him and all glee faded from Curly's face, "I don't know who you think you are but I'll kill ya!"
They took it as their sign to run and bolted, they ran as fast as they could while Tim took the bowl, maybe to make sure Curly wasn't to blame or to make sure the candy wasn't leaving their possession without a fight.
As they ran, they caught the attention of passersby. Once they got to downtown they slowed down, careful not to bump into any Socs.

Thinking positively, remember how they were never supposed to make it this far. All odds were against them vs. Boston and they were down in the beginning but still triumphed! 🙌
Also, remember how Vegas almost swept Dallas but then they didn't. 👀

kasper birdcage i desperately wish we were IRL friends so i can send you the photos i took of myself while reading the ROOKIE. RESPECT. primer because i KNEW my face was doing some real funky stuff. for reference i am literally making the same face as the sad photoshop crying cat. i'm better than this (usually) (i hope) but there is something about rookie respect that is making me and my jaw so UNHINGED i feel like a door left wide open. i feel like a washing machine that someone threw a brick in. i think it's because this is a gold mine left untouched and i'm willing to break my back for this. SAME ARENA??? oh they're BEGGING for illicit and competitive storage room hookups. in my dreams (which are plenty and vivid) they both win the league at the same time and dallas throws them a bender and they go apeshit Together because that's what happens when your mutual respect for other athletes turns into homoerotic and horny celebration of each other's ability. im vaguely aware none of that sentence made any sense but once again i am facedown on the floor. also EUROPEAN EDM??? ARE WE. THE SAME PERSON. i cannot help myself sorry please give me your european edm listens i am always on the hunt for more oontz oontz of which do not even parallel with american edm. in turn i offer you: frej larsson (swedish edm to which i have danced too many times to in the middle of the night in a forest. i cannot elaborate anymore but i was vibing with deers and friends and this is all incredibly true) anyways this is getting too long now but THANK YOU. for writing that primer. i am cherishing it deeply and framing it in my heart.
ok so by european edm i mostly meant "sobbing my stupid brain out while listening to avicii all spring" which wasn't even that out of the ordinary for me, i do that like every year....my tastes are very mainstream unfortunately. i did go through a very intense lost frequencies thing for a while, had several angry dance parties in my kitchen listening to vicetone, and very much enjoyed bunt in their "folk house" era, though i am very confused about what is going on there now. (i enjoy it to be clear! but like what happened when they broke up.) kinda going through a trance thing rn by which i mean just listening to "the lone ranger" by w&w and letting spotify radio take over until my head hurts too much to keep listening. thank you for the rec, i will listen to that artist!!!
anyway getting into it: your brain is SO big and SO beautiful. like yes what IF the mavs and the stars both won championships in the same year, what IF the great city of dallas throws a huge joint party after their parades, and what IF miro and luka have a series of homoerotically charged moments over the course of the night, culminating in luka not so much making a move on miro as semi-drunkenly saying if we do not get out of here and somewhere private i will NOT be held responsible for my actions. and god forbid miro draw attention to himself, which he knows he certainly will if luka doesn't get to kiss him bc luka is loud as fuck....they take a black cab back to luka's house, sobering up in knowledge that they get to act on this stupid thing that's been pulsing between them since their rookie years but which they've never acted on...the 2am summer heat and the weird emotionally charged state when you're sliding from champagne drunk to sober sexuality making everything feel slightly otherworldly as luka unlocks his gate with fumbling hands...do they even make it in to the house before they kiss for the first time or does luka take miro's face in his big hands and kiss him in yard where no one can see because he has high fences and the porch light is off...does it carry the same triumph and relief as bringing the pennant home(!!) to dallas

What kind of captain is Jamie Benn?
Mar 26, 2018 (x)
Jamie Benn has been a key topic of conversation as the Dallas Stars have fallen from a strong playoff contender to the fringes, likely missing the postseason for the third time in the past five seasons.
While the Stars have lost eight straight games, a franchise record in Texas, Benn’s numbers have been fine. He has nine points in his past eight games, and in three straight games, he scored goals that served as a reminder of why he was considered one of the best players in the world and finished third in the MVP voting two seasons ago.
But when you have a “C” stitched on your chest, wins and losses trump personal triumphs.
Instead of reveling at Benn’s goal against Winnipeg, a wrist shot that Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck said was “the best he’s seen in his career,” more time was spent discussing his curt postgame responses to the media. He scored a glorious shorthanded goal against the Boston Bruins, but in the end was also on the ice for all three goals against as the Stars watched their playoff hopes take a deeper plunge.
Right or wrong, this has brought Benn’s leadership into question. There’s a sentiment, especially on social media, that a good captain wouldn’t let this happen. If Benn were a good captain this team would have followed his example, depth scoring wouldn’t have been an issue and Dallas would still likely be a playoff team.
In the past week, some fans have called for a change in the captaincy — not a good idea, by the way — while others have asked the very fair question — what type of captain is Jamie Benn?
I don’t know the exact answer to that question, but let’s add some valuable context to the discussion.
I look at Benn as a captain who needs to lead by example. He’s not overly talkative, especially toward the public, and when he plays well his performance can speak for itself.
But that’s a theory formed from watching him in games and practice. It’s based off my interactions with Benn, which for the most part have always been positive. I don’t personally know what he is like behind closed doors, what he’s like on the team plane during a rough losing streak, or how he reacts in the locker room when the Stars are trailing heading into a third period.
So I asked his troops.
“He is an action-first leader that’s gotten more vocal as the year’s gone on now,” Tyler Seguin said. “He talks, but he puts his actions first, and leads in that regard. As of the last few years, he’s also gotten more vocal, so definitely becoming the ultimate leader.”
“He isn’t the guy that says the most in the locker room, even if he does – when he says something it has 100 percent meaning,” John Klingberg said. “He’s just showing whatever he wants to be done, and that’s the way on the ice, in my four years he stepped into more of a locker room guy as well. Still, he’s not the guy who talks the most, but when he says something it always has 100-percent meaning.”
Every player interviewed for this story echoed a sentiment that aligns with the Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy from the early 1900s: “Speak softly, and carry a big stick.”
The other key theme was accountability.
“For me, he’s the best captain I’ve ever had,” Tyler Pitlick said. “I mean he does everything he can to get the guys together and get that team bond. Whenever we need a kick he’ll give it to us, and he’s not afraid if he thinks we need to get going or if we need to pick it up, himself included. He’s not afraid to include himself in anything and for me, he’s a great captain, leads in the locker room and on the ice, he does it all.”
“He’s one of the best leaders I’ve ever played for, no question,” Devin Shore said. “What makes him a great captain is he doesn’t hold anyone accountable to do stuff that he wouldn’t do himself. Like he can play any type of game and lead by example in that way, he can play the tough game and be the toughest guy on the ice and he can also be our best player skill-wise.”
Benn’s toughness was also a key point that players brought up in my conversations. It’s easy to follow a player that is willing to fight for his team, willing to go after the other team’s captain and set a tone as the alpha male on the ice.
“True leader by example,” Antoine Roussel said. “Puts the heart on the table and gives it everything you’ve got and top of that he keeps you accountable, he doesn’t back down from anyone.”
“He’s fantastic, he just gets it. He’s extremely well-respected amongst his peers here. And what more can you ask for?” Marc Methot said. “He hits, he fights, he scores clutch goals, he’s a fantastic human being off the ice. He’s always very positive off the ice, he takes care of the guys. I mean he’s got to be one of the best captains I played for, really.”
When asking around, I got a few quizzical looks in return. Some players immediately had an answer, while others took a moment and responded by asking why that was even under question.
There’s an interesting dynamic in dealing with today’s NHL players. Some are well-versed and well-read on the coverage of their own team, but they tend to be the minority. Most don’t read the news clippings, and I had a player ask me the other week, “Do you ever use the stuff we talk about?” On top of that, most players completely ignore social media – so it makes sense that there was some surprise that Benn’s leadership would even be a topic of discussion.
That being said, each player was quick to defend their leader. And a couple went further, to say what comes off on a broadcast or on the ice is just the tip of a larger leadership iceberg.
“I think there is definitely a way you are in the general public and the way you are around your teammates, I think that’s what people don’t see,” Greg Pateryn said. “That’s something special we get to have as a team, you know everybody’s personality when they are around a group of guys. He’s been great all year since I’ve been here, he’s awesome.”
“I think that’s natural, I think that’s to be expected of any captain,” Shore said. “The bond hockey players share is pretty special, not a lot of people see that unless you are a part of it. And I think that’s what makes it so special and so when we’re just with the guys he opens up a little bit. But he’s not the loudest guy; when he speaks up, everybody listens. He has that quiet confidence about him, but he’s also not afraid to speak his mind. The way he is with us and the way he is with you guys is different.”
If this exercise proved anything, and I’m still not sure if it did, it sends a message that Benn is the leader in the Stars locker room. And no matter the recent results on the scoreboard, he has the respect of his troops.
“He does everything on the ice so it’s easy to follow him there,” Klingberg said. “He plays PK, PP, he blocks shots, physical, can make moves with the puck, he shoots the puck good. He’s an easy guy to follow, you always have trust from a guy that doesn’t BS too much, always has 100 percent meaning, he’s a leader for sure.”
For better or worse, the Stars have made it clear they are following Benn’s lead.
