Gregory Peck and Jennifer Jones in Duel in the Sun (King Vidor, 1946)
Cast: Jennifer Jones, Gregory Peck, Joseph Cotten, Lionel Barrymore, Herbert Marshall, Lillian Gish, Walter Huston, Charles Bickford, Harry Carey, Tilly Losch, Butterfly McQueen. Screenplay: David O. Selznick, Oliver H.P. Garrett, based on a novel by Niven Busch. Cinematography: Lee Garmes, Ray Rennahan, Harold Rosson. Production design: J. McMillan Johnson. Film editing: Hal C. Kern. Music: Dimitri Tiomkin.
This is a bad movie, but it's one distinguished in the annals of bad movies because it was made by David O. Selznick, who as the poster shouted at moviegoers, was "The Producer Who Gave You 'GONE WITH THE WIND.'" Selznick made it to showcase Jennifer Jones, the actress who won an Oscar as the saintly Bernadette of Lourdes in The Song of Bernadette (Henry King, 1943). Selznick, who left his wife for Jones, wanted to demonstrate that she was capable of much more than the sweetly gentle piety of Bernadette, so he cast her as the sultry Pearl Chavez in this adaptation (credited to Selznick himself along with Oliver H.P. Garrett, with some uncredited help by Ben Hecht) of the novel by Niven Busch. Opposite Jones, Selznick cast Gregory Peck as the amoral cowboy Lewt McCanles, who shares a self-destructive passion with Pearl. Both actors are radically miscast. Jones does a lot of eye- and teeth-flashing as Pearl, while Peck's usual good-guy persona undermines his attempts to play rapaciously sexy. The plot is one of those familiar Western tropes: good brother Jesse (Joseph Cotten) against bad 'un Lewt, reflecting the ill-matched personalities of their parents, the tough old cattle baron Jackson McCanles (Lionel Barrymore) and his gentle (and genteel) wife, Laura Belle (Lillian Gish). Pearl is an orphan, the improbable daughter of an improbable couple, the educated Scott Chavez (Herbert Marshall) and a sexy Indian woman (Tilly Losch), who angers him by fooling around with another man (Sidney Blackmer). Chavez kills both his wife and her lover and is hanged for it, so Pearl is sent to live with the McCanleses -- Laura Belle is Chavez's second cousin and old sweetheart -- on their Texas ranch. It's all pretentiously packaged by Selznick: not many other movies begin with both a "Prelude" and an "Overture," composed by Dimitri Tiomkin in the best overblown Hollywood style. It has Technicolor as lurid as its story, shot by three major cinematographers, Lee Garmes, Ray Rennahan, and Harold Rosson. But any attempt to generate real heat between Jones and Peck was quickly stifled by the Production Code, which even forced Selznick to introduce a voiceover at the beginning to explain that the character of the frontier preacher known as "The Sinkiller" (entertainingly played by Walter Huston) was not intended to be a representative clergyman. There are a few good moments, including an impressive tracking shot at the barbecue on the ranch in which various guests offer their opinions of Pearl, the McCanles brothers, and other things. Whether this scene can be credited to director King Vidor, who was certainly capable of it, is an open question, because Vidor found working with the obsessive Selznick so difficult that he quit the film. Selznick directed some scenes, as did Otto Brower, William Dieterle, Sidney Franklin, William Cameron Menzies, and Josef von Sternberg, all uncredited. The resulting melange is not unwatchable, thanks to a few good performances in secondary roles (Huston, Charles Bickford, Harry Carey), and perhaps also to some really terrible ones (Lionel Barrymore at his most florid and Butterfly McQueen repeating her fluttery air-headedness from GWTW).

The Scottish actor, playwright and singer Roddy McMillan was born on March 23rd 1923.
Born in Glasgow, Roddy McMillan was the son of parents from the Highlands. His mother was from Harris in the Outer Hebrides, and his farther from Ardnamurchan in Lochaber. The son of a docker, he was raised in a two-room tenement flat in the district of Anderston
He became interested in music at an early age, influenced by his relations who would come down from the Highlands to visit and sing folk songs. At the age of 8 or 9 he and his sister joined St Columba's Gaelic Choir in St Vincent Street, Glasgow, a junior choir numbering around 14 members. Two years later, after it folded, they joined the famous Glasgow Gaelic Music Association and would take part in the yearly concerts. Both experiences greatly widened McMillan's knowledge of Gaelic song.
He first experience acting was at school at the age of 13 and he went on to play in repertory for a number of years.
Upon leaving school he worked as an apprentice in a glass mirror works and, during the war years, he worked on aero engines for Rolls-Royce.
At the same time, at the age of 18, he joined the amateur Glasgow Unity Theatre, and after it developed a professional core he eventually became part of that and became a full-time actor. He then became a member of the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre Company. His first play, All in Good Faith, was given its premiere by his Citizens' colleagues when it opened on 6th April 1954.
McMillan was best-known, perhaps, for his role as Para Handy in The Vital Spark (seen here in this BBC picture with John Grieve, Walter Carr and Alex McAvoy) but his range extended far and wide.
After playing Para Handy, he specialised in dour, tough guy roles, the most famous of which was his portrayal of a Glasgow private eye in the BBC TV series The View from Daniel Pike, which won him the TV Personality of the Year award in 1972.
McMillan fought and overcame alcoholism, then gave support to help others through the problem. His leisure interests including folk singing.
He once had a role in a western, Chato’s Land, which was filmed in the south of Spain. Th film, directed by Michael Winner, starred Charles Bronson and Jack Palance. It wasn’t a challenging role, Roddy once commented in an interview that he learned, “the art of sitting in absolute silence at a roadside cafe, just watching the world go by”.
On July 9th 1979, not long after he had completed the recording of a second series of ITV's Hazell, McMillan suffered a heart attack in his Glasgow home and died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, aged 56. He was survived by his wife, Jean, and two daughters.
McMillan's final work, in BBC Scotland's The Camerons, was broadcast two months later in September 1979.
One wee nugget of information I found out while researching Roddy’s life, was that he co-wrote the song Campbelltown Loch with Andy Stewart.

Robinson Crusoe’s Wise Sayings by Ian McMillan
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe was published on this day in 1719. It is generally believed to be the first English novel. Many readers thought it was an autobiography and that Crusoe’s adventures were real. McMillan’s poem gently mocks Crusoe’s extraordinary experiences by imagining the character constructing wise sayings on the back of them.

Robinson Crusoe’s Wise Sayings
You can never have too many turtle eggs.
I’m the most interesting person in this room.
A beard is as long as I want it to be.
The swimmer on his own doesn’t need trunks.
A tree is a good clock.
If you talk long enough to a rock you’ll fall asleep.
I know it’s Christmas because I cry.
Waving at ships is useless.
Footprints make me happy, unless they’re my own.
Defoe modelled his character on a real life privateer and Royal Navy officer named Alexander Selkirk, who spent four months as a castaway on a deserted South Sea island at his own request.

EJI was founded in 1989 by Bryan Steveson, the famous lawyer and author of “Just Mercy.” EJI is a “private nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons.” EJI challenges the death penalty, unjustified punishment, and provide services for people who have been incarcerated back into the world. The reason this organization is necessary is because of how black people are treated in the system. Such as the very reason Bryan Stevenson created the organization in the first place. Bryan Steven traveled to the South as a lawyer fresh out of law school to help represent people who cannot afford legal help. Bryan Stevenson represented many of whom were on death row. While Bryan represented many clients, Walter McMillian was his most famous. Walter McMillan was a black man on death row who was wrongly convicted of murdering a white girl. In Walter McMillan case there was extraordinarily little evidence to incriminate Walter and it was coerced by people in power. Things like that do not happen anymore, yet there are injustices that happen every day against people of color. These injustices occur when people do not have proper representation and wealth to get that representation. EJI states “In the American criminal justice system, wealth—not culpability—shapes outcomes.” The very reason why EJI was created.
EJI believes that “ “ tough on crime” policies that led to mass incarceration are rooted in the belief that Black and brown people are inherently guilty and dangerous—and that belief still drives excessive sentencing policies today.” In order to truly cause change will be to change the perspective of the American people. “We are committed to changing the narrative about race in America.” Just like many of Artist in this world using their Art to change perspective of the American people. Such as Glenn Ligon's work highlighting his black and white features. EJI is changing the minds of the people one case at a time. By showing that the statics of black criminals is nothing more than a manipulated statistic and that racist bias is the true cause of it.

Collect Them All! Character Actor Action Figures
Tumblr media
Kenneth McMillan as Baron Harkonnen, Dune
LJN Toys, 1984
One of my favorite toys. This line also featured a likeness of another favorite character actor of mine, Paul L. Smith as Rabban.
Tumblr media
Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom, Who Framed Roger Rabbit
LJN Toys, 1988
This actually wasn't the first time Christopher Lloyd was immortalized in plastic. His character, Butch Cavendish, from The Legend of the Lone Ranger was also made into a figure.
Tumblr media
G.W. Bailey as Captain Harris, Police Academy
Kenner, 1990
This was a mail-in figure. You would collect the proof of purchases to send away for this exclusive toy.
It makes me laugh to think about some kid waiting anxiously for their Captain Harris figure to arrive. I would have been!
Tumblr media
Jeff Corey as Sheriff Ray Bledsoe, Butch and Sundance: The Early Days
Kenner, 1979
This whole line was basically a collection of established and soon-to-be character actors...including a Brian Dennehy figure!
Tumblr media
Glenn Shadix as Otho, Beetlejuice
Kenner, 1989
I would actually like to pick up one of these since they seem widely available and very affordable.
Sadly, I'm guessing there were a lot left over from the initial run because no one was interested in his character.
Tumblr media
R.G. Armstrong as Pruneface, Dick Tracy
Playmates, 1990
This collection was pretty character actor-heavy, as well.
The line included William Forsythe (Flattop), Henry Silva (Influence), Ed O'Ross (Itchy), Paul Sorvino (Lips Manlis) and, incredibly, Seymour Cassel (Sam Catchem).
Tumblr media
Ronald Lacey as Toht, Raiders of the Lost Ark
Kenner, 1982
Another one of my favorite figures. He comes with an exciting, action-packed removable trenchcoat!
The line also featured Paul Freeman and John Rhys-Davies figures.
Tumblr media
Tracey Walter as Bob the Goon, Batman
Toy Biz, 1989
Tracey Walter is basically the Kings of Character Actors, so I find the existence of this figure really amazing.
