How can crowdsourcing aid in battling the COVID-19 pandemic?
What is Crowdsourcing?
Crowdsourcing is a distributed online problem-solving and innovative sourcing paradigm where participants of online communities collaborate to accomplish a common objective (Vermicelli et al., 2020; Zhang et al., 2022). It supplements conventional data gathering by collecting massive amounts of data and information from individuals worldwide.
Tumblr media
Crowdsourcing Initiatives for COVID-19 Pandemic
Crowdfight
An endeavour spearheaded by the scientific community with the intention of mobilizing all accessible resources to combat the COVID-19 pandemic (Vermicelli et al., 2020). It is designed for COVID-19 researchers who wish to submit a brief description of their inquiries or projects. The request may involve anything from a straightforward but time-consuming task (e.g., data transcription) to the resolution of a technical inquiry that exceeds their area of expertise or the establishment of a collaborative relationship. Further, another scientist within the community will try to comprehend and fulfill the demand.

COVID Near You
Created by Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, which allows individuals to report symptoms in real-time by ZIP code (Zhang et al., 2022). Using crowdsourced data, it maps existing and future pandemic areas to help local, online communities and public health organizations track disease progression. Public reporting of COVID-19 signs may supplement public health monitoring and assist people in determining where symptoms are happening in their community (Fliesler, 2020).
Tumblr media
Open Innovability - Call4Ideas COVID-19 Challenge
The crowdsourcing platform Open Innovability by Enel hosts the Call4Ideas COVID-19 Challenge, launched by Marzotto Venture Accelerator and Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome (Vermicelli et al., 2020, p. 186). This is an open invitation to everyone within the online communities who has innovative projects or ideas that could potentially turned into an entrepreneurial endeavour to assist the Italian system in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. This challenge encompasses various areas, including medical and personal protective equipment, telemedicine and home care, diagnostics, therapy and post-therapy.

Types of Crowdsourcing
While there are four main types of crowdsourcing, this blog will specifically delve into one of them, which is crowdfunding (Cricelli et al., 2021).
Crowdfunding: Soliciting financial contributions and investments for charitable endeavours, initiatives, and entrepreneurial ventures, without the intention of providing monetary returns to the contributors (SendPulse, 2023).
Crowdfunding Campaigns for COVID-19
MaybankHeart-MERCY
The objective of the campaign was to generate financial resources for Mercy Malaysia's COVID-19 Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan which offers crucial assistance to Malaysia's healthcare system by providing medical supplies and other vital necessities (Maybank, 2020). Additionally, it aims to support frontliners and volunteers, who are actively combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it would furnish vital provisions and support to marginalized factions within the community, guaranteeing their access to aid throughout the MCO. In only two weeks, Maybank and Mercy Malaysia received almost RM300,000 for their ‘COVID-19 Pandemic Fund’ after public support. Donations are processed via the online banking platform Maybank2u.
Asnaf Care
Lembaga Zakat Negeri Kedah (LZNK) developed Asnaf Care, a virtual crowdfunding platform that was introduced on March 26, 2020, to raise money for asnaf (have-nots Muslim) in Negeri Kedah who suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 18 March 2020, Asnaf Care has asked the local and online communities to help distribute food to individuals experiencing food shortages under the Restriction Movement Order (Eldersevi & Muhammad, 2021).

Crowdsourcing Initiatives to Combat Infodemic during COVID-19 Pandemic
The proliferation of misinformation persisted without restraint on publicly accessible social media platforms such as Facebook. In Malaysia, Facebook, and Twitter have spread the misleading concepts that alkaline foods may treat COVID-19 (Yang, 2021). In response to the difficulties posed by the infodemic, crowdsourcing endeavours have prioritized the development of websites containing reliable data and information about COVID-19, with the backing of established fact-checking efforts.
CoronaTracker.com
CoronaTracker.com was established in late January 2020, during a period when widespread reports of COVID-19 compelled communities to attempt in comprehending the situation (Yang, 2021). Malaysian data scientist utilized LinkedIn, Facebook, and Telegram to recruit individuals from online communities to cooperate on pandemic remedies, receiving responses from across the globe. The site shows worldwide COVID-19 outbreak statistics, including reported cases, recovery, and fatalities in impacted nations.
Tumblr media
KawalCOVID19
KawalCOVID19 is another crowdsourcing initiative that adopts data-centric methodologies to provide precise and reliable information about COVID-19 in Indonesia (Yang, 2021). Its webpage has current information on confirmed cases, medication, recovery, and mortality. Notably, KawalCOVID19 reviews its portal content with medical community including doctors, virologists and epidemiologists to assure accuracy. Moreover, KawalCOVID19 provides links access to the authoritative sites of World Health Organization and official Indonesian government site. In an effort to counteract falsehoods associated with the pandemic, KawalCOVID19 and the Indonesian Anti-Slander Community (Mafindo) collectively gathered deceptive information from unidentified volunteers to verify its accuracy.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
In conclusion, crowdsourcing has been shown to be a crucial asset in combating COVID-19 in physical and online communities, providing a wide range of viable alternatives. It facilitates the accumulation of real-time information and the development of innovative approaches by enabling global community collaboration through online crowdsourcing initiatives such as Crowdfight, COVID Near You and Open Innovability. Additionally, the ability of crowdfunding initiatives such as MaybankHeart-MERCY and Asnaf Care to amass financial backing for COVID-19 is underscored. Concurrently, crowdsourcing effectively negates misinformation through the provision of accurate information within online communities, as exemplified by initiatives such as KawalCOVID19 and CoronaTracker.com. Fundamentally, crowdsourcing manifests itself as a complex entity, capitalizing on collaborative endeavours to efficiently address the obstacles posed by COVID-19.

damn so I've actually been hyping up this post in my mind for the last half hour or so. I popped my night pills - doxepin sleep aid included. I made some hibiscus tea. *sips tea* I put nothing in it. Just hot water and the hibiscus tea bag. I didn't want to artificially tamper with the sanctity of this moment. I also gave some thought to the music I want to play, at this moment there is none playing. My "The Mars Volta" hoodie came in the mail yesterday and I slept in it to break it in. Something is telling me that it's a Mars Volta kind of night. *sips tea* Not only did all that happen, but I did some good writing in my offline archive. There is a lot I write that I don't post here mainly because of it's more experimental nature. But writing is writing.... and with that 2 things 1. It's either between "Day of the Baphomet," "Tetragrammaton," or "Ouroborous" ...... Tetragrammaton. That one riff. 2. To write?
At present there are an estimated 8,045,311,447 people on the face of the earth. That's man, woman, elderly, adult, teenage, and child. That's every spoken and written language - english being the most widely used.
Quite the audience you could say. That's not including all future generations for as long as the text remains extant. Exponentially multiplying the potential audience.
And I'm doing what exactly? I am endeavoring to convince them all, as many as I can, that it would be wise to acknowledge Allah and Muhammad. To stand, bow, and prostrate in ritual prayer 5 times a day. And to pay the holy alms tax.
There is more of course. But that is succinct enough. It's the methodology that makes the novel what it is. It's not an explicit invitation to the religion with clear and concise commandments or what have you. It's a fictional drama that conveys the teaching as it is lived and experienced. Some of the characters are practicing muslims some aren't. But… If they aren't, what are they? What else do people believe? And what of the aliens we have yet to encounter? Does the scale of the cosmic realm and the possibility of humanity being alone factor into the equation?
Yes. That is indeed what I am doing. So when I share fragments of writing it is only because I believe the person or persons being addressed would appreciate a glimpse of where things are.
But there are roughly 8 billion possible humans being addressed right now.
Humbling. *sips tea* Tetragrammaton begins. Atonal rhythmic brilliance. All hail Cedric Bixler-Zavala!
Let it be clear - the reason "The Mars Revolver" is my music project's name is heavily due to the existence of "The Mars Volta." They're one of those bands that just occupies a very special status. I want to be conflated with them. *sips tea* and the book... and the family tree... and dinner... and god... and fate and choice... and the voices... and all and all ----------
p.s. the tea finished right as the song ended. [ time: 8:34 pm ]
The song looped. Just to be exhaustive and experimental I am going to listen it once more intently to be certain there is nothing else I want to add to this post. The song is 16min and 40 seconds.
bismillah.
[ time: 8:45 pm ] The song is at 12 minutes.
Anyway, "The Zakat Mechanism" led to: Zakat as a Poverty Reduction Mechanism Among the Muslim Community: Case Study of Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Indonesia [ time: 8:50pm ] Done.

Zakat is an Islamic tax that Muslims who qualify must pay. A Muslim whose net worth is below the nisab threshold or whose total annual wealth is below the nisab threshold is obligated to pay Zakat.
What Is Zakat?
In Islam, Zakat is a form of almsgiving given to the poor and needy. The word Zakat itself means purification. A fixed percentage must be distributed to specific groups of people when mal (wealth) reaches a certain level (specific term). As one of Islam’s Five Pillars, Zakat is one of the critical religious responsibilities for Muslims. A common misconception about Zakat is that it is Islamic taxation, which is different. You pay Zakat to the community by taxing your wealth by 1.5%. After that, Zakat’s contributions go to support those in need.
Types Of Zakat
In Malaysia, the government recognizes and regulates several types of Zakat. These include:
Zakat Fitrah
Zakat Mall
Zakat Harta
Zakat Penghasilan
Zakat Fitrah for Non-Muslims
Zakat Fitrah
Ramadan is the time to pay for this type of Zakat. It is a fixed amount based on the value of certain food items, such as rice, wheat, and dates. Ramadan is when Zakat Fitrah provides necessities to the poor.
Zakat Mall
Zakat of this type is on wealth acquired through trade or business. Annually, it is calculated based on a percentage of the total wealth.
Zakat Harta
This Zakat is on wealth acquired by means other than trade or business, such as inheritance or gifts. On an annual basis, it is calculated based on a percentage of the total value of the wealth.
Zakat Penghasilan
Zakat of this type is on an individual’s annual income. Use a percentage of your total income to calculate this tax annually.
Zakat Fitrah For Non-Muslims
A non-Muslim who lives in Malaysia and wishes to help the poor and needy pay this type of Zakat. It is calculated similarly to Zakat Fitrah for Muslims and payment during Ramadan.
How To Pay For Zakat In Malaysia?
The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) collects and distributes Zakat in Malaysia. In addition to setting Zakat rates, JAKIM contains and distributes the funds. Malaysia’s government encourages Muslims to pay Zakat to its zakat collection centers for distribution to the needy. Paying your Zakat through salary deduction is one way to do so. The removal will be from the income tax deduction to avoid clashing with the monthly tax deduction (potongan cukai bulanan). Zakat’s payments are also in the following ways:
By visiting the official website of each state’s zakat board
Internet banking
MYEG
Visit a branch of the Zakat Board in person
In person at the post office
Selected bank counters or ATMs
Official agents.
In case of doubt, check your state’s official zakat website.
Conclusion
Zakat is an integral part of Islam, allowing Muslims to fulfill their religious duty to help those in need. In addition to promoting social justice, Muslims can contribute to the welfare of the poor and needy in their communities by paying Zakat. Zakat offers Muslims in Malaysia the means to fulfill this duty and to ensure that they provide for the poor and needy.

Boosting Efficiency, Taxing Surplus
Taxing Excess Corporate Cash: Unlocking Efficiency and Economic Growth for Malaysia's Future. Read more here:
By Professor Dr Hafezali Iqbal Hussain and Dr Mohsin Ali Recently the topic of taxing corporate cash holdings has been mooted in the Dewan Rakyat. The idea floated was to introduce a 2.5 percent tax on cash savings if they remained untouched for a full year which finds its spirit from the Islamic principle of charging 2.5 percent zakat on gold or silver which exceeds the determined nisab or uruf…

Merajut Kebersamaan
Shofwan KarimRabu, 27/04/2022 | 16:55 WIB
Jangan lupa, semangat berkampung, bernagari, berjorong, telah pula menjadi budaya orang rantau menunaikan zakat dan fitrahnya.
Jangan lupa, semangat berkampung, bernagari, berjorong, telah pula menjadi budaya orang rantau menunaikan zakat dan fitrahnya
Lupakan perbedaan.

Allahu a’Lam.

𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐍 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓 𝐀𝐋-𝐍𝐀𝐉𝐀𝐇 : 𝐀𝐒𝐀𝐒 𝐈𝐋𝐌𝐔 𝐅𝐈𝐐𝐀𝐇 𝐌𝐀𝐙𝐇𝐀𝐁 𝐀𝐋-𝐒𝐘𝐀𝐅𝐈'𝐈 Judul: Matan Safinat Al-Najah: Asas Ilmu Fiqh Mazhab Al-Shafi’i (Dwibahasa Melayu-Arab) Penulis: Al-Shaykh Al-‘Allamah Salim bin Sumayr Al-Hadrami (wafat: 1270H) Penerbit: Karya PiS Sdn. Bhd. #matansafinatalnajah #Safinatunnajah #Safinatunnajah #safinatalnajah #imamsyafii #karyapis (at Pustaka Ilmu Sunnah) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChUp77yL-4Q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
