Mont Royal, Montreal
flickr
Mont Royal, Montreal by Zeb Andrews Via Flickr: I think one of my favorite parts of Montreal turned out to be Mont Royal Park at the heart of the city. This is probably because I visited right at the peak of fall colors to an already beautiful place was at another level with the autumnal foliage in abundance. The park itself is elegantly designed, being the work of Frederick Law Olmsted, known for painting "with lakes and wooded slopes; with lawns and banks and forest-covered hills". So maybe it is no wonder this park was my favorite discovery in this new-to-me city. Zero Image 2000 Kodak Ektar 100

So after playing the game and turning it around in my head for several hours as I went back over all the info I gathered... here's what I personally think happened in Signalis.
This take isn't entirely comprehensive. There's a lot of elements I don't feel I'm smart enough to fully understand, and I acknowledge that the story being open to interpretation is the point. But this is what I took from the game.
During the war on Vineta, two soldiers of the Nation fight together against the Empire. Alina Seo and Lilith Itou. Spending many years together, the two fall in love.
Lilith dies in battle, and the Nation uses a backup of her personality to create the LSTR units. A heartbroken Alina is transferred to the Sierpinski mining facility on Leng.
On Rotfront, a young painter with latent bioresonant abilities named Ariane Yeong wishes to get away from it all. After completing her compulsory military service, she applies to the Penrose Program and spends many years in space, alongside her assigned Replikant unit: LSTR-512. Elster. Spending many years together, the two fall in love.
However, the Penrose Program was a setup. The ship was never intended to complete its mission. The Nation had become aware of Ariane's latent abilities and had assigned her on a doomed mission, shooting her off into space to die on a ship that would eventually break down. On the 3000th cycle of their mission, the pair learned that they had been abandoned. Unwilling or unable to do it herself, Ariane made Elster promise to end their lives rather than suffering. However, Elster couldn't bring herself to do it. As time passed, radiation began to leak from the ship's engines, and Ariane and Elster both developed cancer. Elster died from the illness before she could bring herself to fulfill her promise.
Strangely, Ariane did not die. Possibly by some mutation from the radiation interacting with her bioresonant abilities, she was unable to die. She would survive at least another 2000 cycles after the Penrose was set to run out of supplies, all the while in constant suffering. The ship eventually crashed on Leng. Ariane's uncontrolled, mutated bioresonant abilities came into contact with the various Kolibries inside the Sierpinski facility, and her suffering was shared and amplified exponentially as it spread and repeated itself along the bioresonant hivemind. A psychic feedback loop spread like a disease. All gestalts died. All the replikants who weren't mutated or destabilized were left fighting for their lives, but none could stay unaffected forever.
Meanwhile, an accident had occurred in which all backups of the original mental template of Lilith Itou were lost. As a substitute, the Nation started creating new LSTR units using the latest backup of a decommissioned LSTR unit belonging to the Penrose Program: a copy of the mind of Elster, decommissioned after 3000 cycles. However, having never read the instructions, Ariane had taken zero precautions to avoid destabilization. All new LSTRs put into service after that time were affected. They were prone to hallucinations, had trouble distinguishing the present from the corrupted memories of their lives as Lilith Itou, and were consumed by one thought: fulfilling her promise.
As time passed, dozens of LSTR units came to the Sierpinski facility. Their destabilized minds were unable to distinguish Ariane from Alina, the two loves of their two lives. Every time one of them entered the facility, their destabilization further worsened the cascade of bioresonant mutation affecting the people within, and Falke in particular found herself affected by Elster's memories. Adler tries his best to stop this, by killing any Elsters who appeared, but it was just delaying the inevitable. Ariane's memories and Elster's hallucinations combine with Falke's supernatural abilities, causing the facility to become warped by images and places from Ariane's past, even turning an entire area into a replica of Rotfront and conjuring apparitions of Isa, a long-dead childhood friend of Ariane's. How much was Elster's hallucinations and how much was Falke's reality bending abilities is unclear.
Finally, one of the Elster units successfully makes it through the impossibly warped facility, kills Falke, and fulfills her promise. By ending Ariane's life, the feedback loop of suffering is stopped, and the cycle finally ends.

since i was looking at codywan ao3 stats over the years, i thought it'd be interesting to compare with the three other biggest pt-era ships. at the time of posting (2023/08/01), the largest pt-era ship on ao3 is anakin/padme, followed by anakin/obi-wan, then cody/obi-wan, then obi-wan/qui-gon
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Graph of total works on AO3 by ship. Quiobi is shown as a blue line, Obikin as red, Anidala as yellow, and Codywan as green. The horizontal axis shows the years from 1997 to 2023, and the vertical axis shows the number of total works from 0 to 9000. /End ID]
quiobi starts increasing moderately but steadily from 1999 to about 4000 works in 2023. there are under 100 anidala and obikin works dated 1999-2009, then both ships start to increase slowly, then faster from 2015-2019, and even faster from 2019-2023 (anidala faster than obikin). anidala overtakes quiobi at about 2500 works in 2019 to reach nearly 9000 in 2023. obikin overtakes quiobi at about 2750 works in 2020 to reach about 8000 in 2023. there are no codywan works until 2009, then it increases slowly from 2015-2019 and grows rapidly from 2019-2023. codywan overtakes quiobi at 3500 works in 2022 to hit nearly 6000 works in 2023
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Graph of works posted per year by ship. Quiobi is shown as a blue line, Obikin as red, Anidala as yellow, and Codywan as green. The horizontal axis shows the years from 1997 to 2023, and the vertical axis shows the number of works posted from 0 to 2500. /End ID]
these two graphs confirm my feeling based on my experiences* in sw fandom that quiobi is an old, steadily growing ship. the phantom menace in 1999 sparked the ship, and there has been a moderate but steady 50-100 works per year since then til 2014, when it starts to grow. after 2016 and 2020, there are some moderate step-ups in the number of works posted per year (200-300 and 300-500, respectively), but not the huge spikes of the other ships
anidala and obikin share pretty similar growth patterns, with the number of works per year being pretty low until 2016, when it jumps to 500-600 (overtaking the number of quiobi works posted per year), then jumps again in 2020 to over 1000 and has been growing ever since. i already discussed codywan in my previous post, but in brief, there is a low growth from 2015-2019 of about 100 works per year, before it spikes in 2020 and catches up with the number of anidala and obikin works posted yearly
*when i got into star wars fandom, quiobi was the pt-era largest ship. i never felt that it was losing popularity, just that other ships were growing faster
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Graph of year over year growth by ship. Quiobi is shown as a blue line, Obikin as red, Anidala as yellow, and Codywan as green. The horizontal axis shows the years from 2000 to 2023, and the vertical axis shows the percent growth from -100 to 1100. /End ID]
what's interesting here that all of the ships had spike in growth in 2016, most likely from the force awakens being released in december 2015 and sparking new interest in star wars, and 2020, possibly from folks quarantining at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and spending more time writing. season 7 of the clone wars being released in 2020 could have also been a factor. it would be interesting to see if other fandoms also had a spike in new works in 2020. anidala had a spike in 2005, when revenge of the sith was released. there are no obikin works dated 2004 on ao3, which is why there is a gap in the graph from 2004-2006 (percents don't play nicely with zeroes). not shown on this graph is the jump from 1 quiobi work dated 1998 to 104 works dated 1999, because that is a 10,000% increase that completely destroys the vertical range
notes:
largest ships were determined from the relationship tags in the "Star Wars - All Media Types" tag on ao3
works from each ship tag on ao3 were filtered by date. no other filters were used. some works may have been tagged with multiple ships (e.g., codywan and anidala) and/or with a 3-way ship (e.g., obianidala)
each year shows the number of works at the end of that year (i.e., 2022/12/31, 2021/12/31, etc)
data for works posted by year and for % growth for 2023 was extrapolated from the number of fics posted in 2023 so far. at the time of making these graphs (2023/08/01), there have been 191 quiobi, 1391 obikin, 2205 anidala, and 1179 codywan works posted in 2023
technically, the graphs show the number of works updated, not posted, as i could not find any option to filter works on ao3 by date posted
since quiobi, obikin, and anidala are all significantly older than ao3 itself, these graphs are of limited scope pre-2009. pre-2009 data is affected by which works were imported from older archives and/or backdated by their creators moving to ao3
deleted works were not accounted for

hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii i went missing for another few decades again 💕💕💕💕🥰🥰😘💘🤟💘🥰❤️‍🔥🤟🤟❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥💕❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥i'm so sleepy yall got no idea.
im hall, a filipino nursing student with the humor of someone who should not be in healthcare. you will only see me biannually unless god decides to love me. i write original works, all of which are 3 paragraphs from a hipaa violation. my search history will put me on death row one day. i write about everything, jam-packing my works with lethal doses of found family, 2000 ccs of trauma, fantastic homosexuality, the occasional god complex, and the arduous process of semi-legal adoption. i've been told that most of my tales revolve around grief and the concept of a beating heart being a good enough reason to keep living.
so where the hell are my books?
you might wanna come back in 30 years for that, bestie. i got a bunch of stories im working on alongside @canadjester, my best bud. here's some of our faves:
End With One (Never Zero) / Novel
The day after the sun fucking deletes itself from the universe, terminal insomniac Sage gets kidnapped by aggressively delusional twelve-year-old Sasha and the ragtag group of preteen social rejects that she brainwashed into believing she's the messiah. The reason for his kidnapping? He's an NPC—and she needs cannon fodder. The journey to becoming the Ultimate God is a savage one, and she isn't about to sacrifice one of her loyal slaves to ensure her plot armor is kept intact. So, she forces him to die for her. He does. Many, many times.
In God's Image / Visual Novel
Greasy boy Rui finds out he's god and is promptly told to go find "some answers." His best friend, the sole reason why he is not dead yet, says that he didn't find out jack shit. He was scammed, she says, by a cannibal or incest apologist or whatever else decided to exist before the poisoned water supply and mutants drive them all to extinction. Best to forget about it, she says. Don't even try going to Death Ocean Incredibly Lethal Do Not Go Here It Kills Everything Turn Back for "some answers," she says. You'd be stupid stupid dumb dumb idiot moron if you did that, Rui. You aren't stupid stupid dumb dumb idiot moron, are you? In his defense, Rui is addicted to adrenaline and very, very bored.
To Rise a Fallen Angel / (Self-Indulgent) Trilogy
Princess Avyalva Dembrose and her twin brother Avoristell have been left tragically unsacrificed after the Guardian Angel spontaneously Fucking Dies. Source of Kingdom Etheria's protection from complete and utter bullshit now eviscerated and reality threatening to become one giant gutter, Avyalva turns to her favorite novels for guidance. Their answer? Found family. Find a legion of really... unique... clusterfucks. Unfortunately, none of the stories prepared her for the sheer amount of plot holes and twists real life has to offer. And how long it actually takes to get from Point A to Point B.
and that is all~~
this blog will mostly feature others' writing and, of course, my writing. expect very little discourse and posts outside of writing. let me know if you'd like for me to reblog any of your works!
note: a good chunk of the stories i have here are works that i was once writing alongside a friend, Marcy. due to certain circumstances, i became the one in charge of actually publishing the damn things, and now i own all her characters. i was recently informed that she had a writeblr before deleting her social media presence. let me know if any of the works are familiar to you! if you could tell me anything about what you know of them, i would be grateful :)

Feelings on Xicor and DB AF as a whole!
Tumblr media
Posting a thread I had back on Twitter here, though I'll be expanding on a fair bit since I have MUCH more room to breath so, let's get into one of my favorite subjects in this fandom, AF fan culture!
The fandom in the 2000s is really fascinating to me as someone who wasn't "there", the show and manga were 100% DEAD, there were only games that retold the same story from Z to GT during that time and yet because of a certain localization that was happening the fanbase was kinda thriving, constantly making new stuff. There was ZERO actual new story content and yet the fans just took it upon themselves to make shit and keep that flame going! New transformations, endless sagas, whole multi work fan manga that just spawned from a dead series that happened to get an English Dub with a different soundtrack.
Arguably at the center of most of this was this guy right here, XICOR, third son of Goku and the main villain of AF (or at least, it's first arc.). People talk about how a character like Xicor is rather boring and yeah that is true, the character of Xicor is boring, but it's not he himself that's the fun part, it's what he represents that makes him interesting!
Tumblr media
He's undeniably fascinating if ya think about it.
His design? Ripped from a fan form. This pic is from like, 04' if I recall correctly and it's not even a new character, it's Goku in Super Saiyan 9. That's why he has Goku's Gi but green, the spikes are there cause apparently it's a dragon form??? Who'd have thunk it eh?
His character? Basically every villain that came before him and then some, a high and mighty powerhouse with an ego to match. Eager to take the throne atop the universe where his father supposedly sat as West Kai had told him. Ruthlessly evil to his core and merciless, in other words, very generic.
His backstory? A hodgepodge of several different fanfics from around the same time that combined into what we know now. The illegitimate third son of Goku, born of West Kai and Goku's DNA because she had taken his blood (or seduced him depending on the fic!).
It's just endlessly interesting what he represents, he feels less like a real character to me and more like an icon. Something that embodies DB's OC culture and general fandom in a lot of ways, whether the fans would admit it or not, he's a mainstay in this fandom that won't go away. No matter how far removed we get from that era.
Tumblr media
And that's not even getting into the story he's attached to, or rather the concept. DRAGON BALL AF, After Future! Or perhaps it's April Fools? AF is never concrete. It could be anything and everything. It's far beyond what it originally was, beyond what the creator of that "SSj5" image intended. Hell, it's not SSj5 at all, it isn't even Goku! But as far as the fandom is concerned, that didn't really matter.
What had originally began as one fan story, one image really, eventually became something that would define basically any Post GT story line. A lot of them having similar elements with wildly differing execution, from Goku's third son to Cellbuuzer or any manner of unholy creations one could dream up in their heads.
I think to some degree everyone involved in spreading the idea around knew it wasn't "real" but there's something insanely cool about how it became this big community fan project with ideas anyone could use in their own stories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I honestly can't speak to the quality of AF Origins cause I've never read it myself but Toyble and Jiji's AF Doujinshis are probably the most well known versions of the story aside from maybe PGV's take, but I can't speak on that either cause it's insanely long and it's lore is.. complicated to put it lightly.
Toyble's version of the story takes the Xicor premise and runs whole hog with it, the majority of Xicor's agreed upon characterization is found here and the action is a damn fun read if you're into this kinda thing.
The real highlight is probably the art and what little bits of humor are present, it feels very Toriyama like at it's best and I've no doubt it's why he landed a job doing official work.
It's a darn shame that it never truly finished but the ending we did get was kinda sweet and I'm more than happy with that.
Jiji's AF is a lot longer and has the benefit of actually being finished, with multiple arcs that are quite fun. The highlight is probably the story with Marble and seeing Goten, Trunks and Uub handle a threat on their own.
The last arc being a repeat of the Shadow Dragons is not my favorite conceptually and their designs even less so but it's really nifty to see everyone handle their own Dragon so, I give it a pass.
Both are rife with heavy amounts of ripping shots from the original manga and tracing in some instances but I can't say I'm too bothered by it. As they're still fun to see as real takes on AF in some form. There's definitely better fan manga out there but these are the ones I wanted to highlight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's so many more fun and bizarre things from this era of DB's fandom history that I wanna highlight and go in depth on but I'd be here for a million years if I did so I'll leave on this:
I honestly believe there's no fandom that's like Dragon Ball's, Sonic's fandom is close, but that was never a dead franchise. This fandom can be annoying, offensive and quite unfun sometimes, but I adore it at it's best. It's a wildly interesting ride I'm happy to be part of!

February Prompts
Yay, we survived January - Let's make February a good month for fics!
Moodboard:
Tumblr media
Non-smut: Game night with friends
Smut: Battle, berry, sports, hypnotize
Random: (Movie quote): "The key to a woman's heart is an unexpected gift at an unexpected time." - Finding Forrester (2000)
gif:
Tumblr media
A reminder for all:
If the prompts are 3-5 words you don’t have to include all of them. Imaginary bonus points if you do :) but zero stress they just have to include a couple in some fashion so it fits the prompt.
If the prompt is a quote you can include it at any point, it doesn’t have to be the opening line.
If the prompt is the image moodboard (multiple images) you can be inspired by one of them, be inspired by two, be inspired by the lot, get a feeling from the thing and not one of the images specifically - it’s all good. There is no wrong way to approach this.
If the images on the moodboard are of Robert or Emilie’s non-rumbelle characters (eg Rush, Macavoy, Claire, Heiro…), don’t feel you have to use that character. They’re just there for a bit of variety.
Anyelle and anyem are welcome if you do want to use them, though!
if you are inspired by the gif prompt, similarly, your creativity is your only limit. It’ll be a real treat to see you might come up with.
Happy Rumbelling!

As I was playing the new TYBW story on BBS, I really noticed how badly Kubo fumbled his own story to begin with...
Ukitake sent Rukia to the World of the Living after being in the squad for over 40 years!
Now he's sending new kids fresh out of the Academy...
When Shino and Ryonosuke get hurt, Ichigo — The one that was well written up until the Fullbringer Arc. — would have called the Soul Society (at least he would call Rukia.) to warn them about the fact and also to warn against sending kids in a time when (apparently) there's a surplus of really fucking big and super dangerous hollows!
Then we get the warning — before Nel appeared!— that Soul Society was attacked.
Tumblr media
Over 200 Squad 1 Shinigami were killed!
No reaction whatsoever beyond a "Oh No! How could that be! That sucks..." half hearted reaction from Ryonosuke.
This part right here? Normally? Would have been enough to get, at least Ichigo, going right the fuck now to Soul Society!
But no...
Nel appears and... everyone decides to go...help Hueco Mundo?!? Why?
Everyone there is an enemy?
I'm very sorry for Dondonchaka, but the wisest course of action would be to have these two protected by Urahara and go right the fuck now to SOUL SOCIETY and WITH YOUR POWERFUL SHINIGAMI FRIENDS find out what's going on and then help Hueco Mundo?!?
Hey, Urahara! What are you doing here? Why the fuck are you more concerned with going to enemy territory and helping the enemy instead of trying to find out what is happening to your own people? How about you open that gate of yours into Soul Society?
How about... I don't know... Contacting Soul Society?
And where's Yoruichi?!?
Nowhere to be seen, just like common sense and logic.
It's easier to pick apart the blatant mistakes in still images when you're not being distracted by neat visuals and a kick ass soundtrack...
And another thing!
FIVE DAYS!
Fucking Yamamoto had five days to gather his Gotei 13 and plan out defence. He fucking knew who they were! Of that I'm sure!
And yet, in the first invasion, NO ONE ELSE KNOWS THESE ARE QUINCY!
And we know the results of absolutely zero preparation for the invasion...
Makes like... Zero sense whatsoever!
I can make mistakes in my stories.
I'm a fanfic writer.
Tite Kubo absolutely cannot! It's his fucking job! He's been doing this since the early 2000s...
On a side note... I'm pretty sure those German sentences are incorrect in the sense that you really do not speak like that in Germany...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't used German in YEARS but I'm pretty fucking sure that you don't use "eh" but "zu"...
I think it's a case of a bad Google translate usage.

wtf I just found out that “all your fans are belong to me” from tomodachi life references a meme?
Apparently there’s an arcade game titled Zero Wing, which later released on the Sega Mega Drive for Europe in 1991. The EU version was translated but it’s wasn’t very good, and one of the lines was “all the base are belong to us” and I guess that became a joke around the early 2000s internet. It seemed that 14 years later tomodachi life writers thought it would be funny to slip that in for the English versions of the game as a joke
I always thought it was some weird typo they had and didn’t notice or bother fixing, but upon research I found this pretty interesting and funny fact :)
Oh here’s the image btw

Manabu Otsuka, Mappa, and Jujutsu Kaisen & Yuri On Ice!!
Today (or well, yesterday in Japan), an interview went live with Manabu Otsuka (who is the CEO of MAPPA), which is equal parts disheartening and disappointing, making it an important read for any anime fan out there, and I'll explain why here.
Tumblr media
The single largest red flag here is this paragraph. They want to reach the heights of Kyoto Animation and Ufotable, but in a fraction of the time. This entire concept is a fallacy and just ridiculous in nature.
Why? Well, because Ufotable became a studio in the year 2000. They are just past 20 years of business. Kyoto Animation? That ones a little more valid since it was 1985, so I'll just provide an example to the former.
Ufotable, as a studio gained massive critical acclaim and success with Kara No Kyoukai / The Garden of Sinners, thrusting the studio into the limelight. The year that movie was released? 2007.
Only seven years after the official formation of the studio, they put out an insane success as a studio. Of course, that wasn't entirely consistent, but when you speak to the critical acclaim and refinement of a studio such as Ufotable, Kara No Kyoukai is by no means off of the table. Though, it's not like Fate/Zero was much further behind in 2011.
These dates will remain important later, but I just want to address the final part while I'm here.
Otsuka's solution to "catching" these studios that have a decade or more experience over Mappa? Brute force. Need experience to get better? Well, we're just cram in as much as we can to improve. Oh, but you're worried about quality? Don't worry, we'll make sure to maintain high quality.
Forget what's going on with Jujutsu Kaisen, forget even the issues with Hells Paradise. Series that they 100% funded struggled with production, outsourcing an incredible amount of frames to Chinese studios, even the original season of JJK and its movie struggled with production timelines while delivering.
The sheer hubris of Otsuka as a producer and the CEO of the company is impossible to grasp. During a season where staff members have been crumbling on social media, getting upset over complaints and words from fans, struggling to do good work, Otsuka believes it a good time to provide an interview about front-loading on productions to increase the rate of growth with the studio.
Incredibly frustrating to read, I can't imagine how the actual staff from Mappa feel about the direction they're being dragged in.
But that's only one of two parts to this interview that are just beyond repair.
Tumblr media
Otsuka directly credits Yuri On Ice!! and In This Corner of The World for the success and modern image of Mappa. But wait, isn't there supposed to be a Yuri on Ice movie happening at some point? Oh yeahhhhh, it's in production hell and Mappa won't say a word about any actual developments.
I think the only good thing to arise from this paragraph is the fact that they give credit to In This Corner of The World and have recently released Alice and Therese's Illusion Factory. It's the first movie they've release since 2016 that is not a complement to an existing anime IP.
Still, incredibly disheartening to see them credit such foundational series and yet stray so far from them. But hey, they're adapting battle action shonen #3451 so it's all okay.
Anyways, the numbers I mentioned earlier. It took Ufotable 7 years, or even 11 if you want to focus on TV anime only, to find massive success as a studio.
Mappa? They did it in 6 years with Yuri on Ice. Yuri on Ice!! quite literally built Mappa into the studio it is today. Otsuka admits that as fact. But still, Yuri On Ice!! remains by the wayside as a priority for the studio that owes it its standing in the anime industry.
I know that a lot of high level staff with various studios are very much out of touch with the industry as they focus on tradition and the more enigmatic (to Western populations) Japanese business practices, but this exists on an entirely separate level.
Which is incredibly disappointing because there's good conversation from Otsuka about independently produces anime and the monetary challenges that face a studio. But it's hard to feel sympathetic and agree with them when they handle so many other aspects so poorly.
So yeah, I'm not really sure I have some grand reason for why people should read it, but I think it's important in pulling back the curtain on the industry and your favorite studios to realize that these are all corporations trying to make money before they do anime.

The Many Faces of Captain Cold
(picture sources + mini rant under the cut)
I’m just completely obsessed with how often they redesigned my boy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a character whose body-type, facial features, hair and age changed as often as him?
He started out as an average, what, 30-40 year old man, very tall and lanky in statue and with a hooked nose (1st row).
1957; Showcase #08
1976; Flash Vol 1 #243
1999; Legends of the DC Universe #16
In Post-Crisis (2nd row) he gained weight, aged at least 20 years and his nose kept getting more and more crooked. (First image of that row is a deaged child Leonard.)
2000; Young Justice: Sins of Youth crossover event
2002; Flash Vol 2 #182: Absolute Zero
2010; Flash Vol 3 #06
And then my favorite, New 52 (3rd row), hit and gave him the most intense glow-up I have perhaps EVER seen in comics. Deaged him into his late 20s, made him buff, adjusted his costumed to show off said buffness and also gave him white hair to go with his ice-powers (not Cold Gun in this run, but actual powers).
2012; Flash Vol 4 #06
2012; Flash Vol 4 #11
2014; Rogues Rebellion
Rebirth (4th row) aged him up a decade or two again, made him brunette again because he was depowered now. And, for a stint, gave him a horrid goatee. (Additionally, in the middle of this row, is a picture from Leonard’s childhood, featuring him and Lisa as kids with their beloved grandpa. While listing his faces, I had to also include this rare childhood photo!)
2017; Flash Vol 5 #13
2017; Flash Vol 5 #14
2018; Flash Vol 5 #37
Suicide Squad (5th row, first two pictures) then gave us grizzled, buff old Leonard, which honestly was a very, very good look on him, imo.
Flash Vol 5 #75
Suicide Squad Vol 5 #41
And right now (5th row, last image), we’re at kind of a middle-thing between his first two designs. We got a run-down middle-aged brunette Lenny.
2020; Flash #750
And then there are the Elseworlds takes on him (6th row). Rogues giving us a really-really old Lenny, Urban Legends going back more toward his New 52 look and, of course, Wentworth Miller, my beloved.
2022; Black Label’s Rogues
2022; Batman: Urban Legends #17
The Flash TV show’s Wentworth Miller

Over on twitter the beautiful genius behind everyone's favorite Tiny Cocaptains @nesleepng mentioned La Camisa Negra as being Ed-coded and now I literally can't move on with my day despite having a Real Work Meeting in like 20 minutes?
Tumblr media
I wish I had even an iota of video-editing or visual art skills to bring this to life but maybe I can wrangle another image-focused zero-plot <2000 word fic out of it? Things will probably get too sad to capture the true "y debajo tengo el difunto" energy of it all but maybe Ed can cry into the lone black silk shirt he finds in Stede's auxiliary wardrobe before throwing it overboard oh shit I should be writing this down

2023 Media Thread Pt3
Sharkula: Finding out that this director cranks out like 8 of these a year makes so much sense. The editing and effects are bafflingly amateur, and by that I mean I don't know how you can make something this inept in good faith. The casting is...concerning. I'm not referring to the 'college students' that look like weekend warriors, I mean that a certain character clearly had some sort of disorder, and it felt pretty exploitative. Funny bad in a pathetic sort of way. -6/10
Tumblr media
Sharkenstein: We wanted to see more, but it turns out that instead of a fountain of infine fun-bad, it was just bad. At east the Franken-shark was a Nazi also somehow -3/10
Tumblr media
Ronin Mecha 3: Space Warrior: This is the kind of incoherent bootleg movie that makes you feel drunk and delirious from laughing too much. Literally nothing from this poster appears, but I did have an episode when I saw a Scope Dogg. -7/10
Tumblr media
Mighty Lady Sparkle: I admire the passion for tokusatsu but I don't admire the ecchi. It's the kind of movie where you start the movie proposing drinking games over its quirks but 20 minutes in you feel uncomfortable. -2/10
Tumblr media
Boneworks: It took a bit for it to click for me, but Stress Level Zero made a really impressive standard for VR gunplay and exploration. That being said, some of the physics takes a bit to get used to and if you don't have good VR legs, this game would be borderline unplayable. The physics puzzles and level design aren't quite up to the valve standard they are trying to live up to, the former being groan worthy at times, but the gun handling is fun enough that I was interested in playing some of the alternate game modes. The confused and underwhelming ending left it on an odd note, but I had a blast/ 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Netflix One Piece: Sometimes the performances just don't work and the dialogue doesn't quite hit the mark. However it made me understand the appeal of One Piece and I gotta give props to the costuming, makeup and the few actors that understood the assignment. 7.5/10
Tumblr media
The Amazing Digital Circuis Pilot: There is a distinction between marketable and appealing. Content can be made with the intent of being white noise. Nice rendering I guess. These are ideas that can coexist. 2/10
Tumblr media
Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger 20th: The Unforgivable Abare: I was initially afraid that this would be 'abaranger vs the woke mob' I was pleasantly surprised by humor and some out of left field GL. Can't complain 6/10
Tumblr media
X-Files Revival: I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. While a few of the comedic episodes were absolute gold, This was pretty sad. Its attempts to stay topical somehow make it more dated than the 90s seasons did. Unfortunately trying to be hip left me with a toothless 16 episodes made mostly of mythology episodes that are clearly supposed to go a whole lotta nowhere. 4/10
Tumblr media
Gundam Build Metaverse: Never before has a 10th anniversary season made me feel so old and hopeless. The first episode left me hopeful when it delivered a premise I could see blossoming into a good 15-ish episode show with the occasional cameo and a laid-back Hawaiian attitude to my favorite hobby. The OP and ED promised a good balance of modeling, character cameos, and original drama. Then the last two episodes dropped at once after a two-week gap. That was it. It introduced its antagonist as quickly as she was resolved. Most cameos were still images if they appeared. No one is the right age. The new toys are dispatched so quickly it fails as a toy commercial. This had to have gone through development troubles because of the botched 'metaverse' spawned by the Japanese grants they were handing out...right? I huffed the copium and just got a confusing meh. 5/10
Tumblr media
DOA Dead or Alive: Finally, a fighting game movie adaptation that understands the assignment! It's dumb! It's campy! It's exploitative and oggling but in a way that respects its subjects more than most 2000's movies in this genre. It almost loops around to being oddly empowering, an opinion seconded by my girlfriends hooting and hollering at the movie. While one performance was funny bad, any martial arts movie with a ladder fight is great in my book. 8/10
Tumblr media
The Last Witch Hunter: Rarely does a vanity projects with someones D&D characters end up this fun. It ranks highly for me in the subgenre of modern-day supernatural hunter movies in an urban setting. Rock solid movie. 7.5/10
Analog Horror Grab Bag: What if a VHS was spoooooooky. Look buddy, mashing MarbleHornets and Exploding Varmits together gets less novel the longer you watch 4/10
Murder in Venice: I'm not familiar with the original story, but this was a fun and spooky watch. 7/10
Tumblr media
Godzilla vs Megalon (2023): I enjoyed the moments of Shin Godzilla cinematography, but mixed with showa-era goofy moves and shonen combat, this short didn't work for me. The chunky soup didn't benefit from an art style that created my least favorite Godzilla design. 5/10
Tumblr media
Fest Godzilla 4: Operation Jet Jaguar: RETURN OF DA KING BABYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHOWA IS BACK IN A BIG WAY 7/10
Tumblr media
Pistol Whip: Maybe it was the triggers on my controllers but the timing just felt weirdly off. Trying to deliberately juke the timing killed the rhythm game magic and made me feel more like I was waiting for permission to get the bad guys. The John Wick fantasy this is clearly built for wasn't lost on me though, but without that immersion, I just felt bad. Totally subjectively a 3.5/10
Tumblr media
Ultraman Netflix Final Season: I don't really get the appeal of public opinion narratives the way anime seems to make them. Similarly, I don't like when noir stories depend on all of the protagonist's friends requiring zero evidence to turn on them at the drop of a hat. Especially when neither party really attempts to talk it out. Its bad writing and a dub with all of the industries bad habits held up by A really hot alien and a funny magical girl transformation that one time. 4/10
Tumblr media
Gundam Trilogy Rewatch: Watched this with two friends who were seeing them for the first time. God these things hold up, especially the 3rd one. Incredible stuff. I and II are a 7/10 for me for good content with weird pacing and III is a 9/10 for great writing and drama. Reanimated sections weren't anything to scoff at either
Tumblr media
Skyrim 2nd playthrough: I'll say a playthrough where I know what I'm doing and isn't as sidetracked was better at letting me enjoy the setpieces, I think that without the interstitial wanderlust from the feeling of adventuring a new land, something didn't hit the same. However bringing Sarana(SDA), Lydia(IFD) and a few other talking followers added a certain spice to it. An observation I missed the first time was how hard it pushes you interact with some of the factions in a way I think kinda cheapens their organic introductions.
Armored Trooper Votoms: I reductively pitched this show to someone as the midpoint between Gundam and 40K. There's a lot to love with this series: Gorgeous visuals, concise episodes, and the confidence to change its setting periodically to fun locales like Arakis or Vietnam. Chiricho is a unique protagonist who pulls off the Sigma Male archetype with depth and soul. I was pretty enamored with this from an aesthetic standpoint, but I'm not blind to its flaws. The society is a weak antagonist once they are revealed and the pacing drags as it repeats itself to buy time. While ATs are iconic, they aren't always used with the variety they deserve. While maybe only half the series lives up to this score: 8/10
Tumblr media
Knights of the Zodiac 2023: I think this might actually be worst live action anime adaptation to date. Never before have I seen any less interest in adapting the source material than this. I can usually find something to like in a bad movie, but for this I have nothing. Maybe I felt something when we all laughed at the Jump Force cutscenes they used as fight scenes. Theres just nothing here. 0/10
Tumblr media
Oblivion Override Demo: Ever play Dead Cells? it sure is that with vector graphics. My weakness for this type of robot design puts in most of the work here. movement feels a bit off. 4/10
Tumblr media
Half Life 2: VR Mod
-As a way to replay half Life 2: Yep, this is still one of the most important games ever. However, I think that the vehicle sections go on a bit too long and subsequent entries did a lot to improve the visual sameness of a lot of the game 9/10
-As a VR game: Gun handling is excellent. Accessibility options like laser sights for all weapons were fantastic, and they let me help smooth out my own learning curve with the weapons. I will say that weapon selection and two handed aiming was a little cumbersome at times, but weapon reloading was the perfect amount of cumbersome to be satisfying. Even though the game itself didn't get rebalanced to accommodate for VR, it all meshed for a really fun and challenging experience. However vehicle controls were kinda weird and not that great standing. 8/10
Tumblr media
Votoms: The Last Red Shoulder: I've come to the conclusion that the real enemy of Votoms wasn't Wiseman, it was the 24 minute episode format. more breathing room meant better pacing and time to really drink in the kino.7.5/10
Tumblr media
Cade: The Tortured Crossing: In an incredible stroke of luck I was able to see a Niel Breen film in theaters and I will not lie: it was amazing. The audience was a riot and I nearly passed out from laughter a few times. The editing was surreal and I could see how this was probably stretched from an hour and a half to two hours in the edit. I will not regret giving it an -10/10
Tumblr media
Kengan Ashura S2 (???): The real villain is Netflix's release structure. This is one season of anime I saw at a convention like 4 years ago. Its pretty alright. It's competent 6/10
Tumblr media
The Mummy 2017: This movie has been a punching bag, both because of the presumptuous launch of the 'dark universe' and also that one trailer that was posted with unfinished sound. Unfortunately, the movie itself is pretty alright and I would like to see more. Plus one point for American Werewolf in London but I take that point away again for another mischaracterization of Dr.Jekyl. 6/10
Tumblr media
Votoms Big Battle: Neat stuff. real standout is the fun character design and animation. I also liked the touch of the filter over the villains voice. It kinda hints at how much of a machine he is at that point. 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Attack on Titan Final Season part 3: I don't think the ending was bad for the reasons a lot of people say, but I can tell it beefs it in the final chapter. Everything up to that is incredible, Especially the bit with the baseball. Sadly I think the sour note with Mikasa and the tree was an interesting choice that really didn't work out and spoiled it for me a bit. 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Attack on titan as a whole... It took a decade. The times weren't always great, but they sure were had. It is politically dense enough that everyone has a half-baked opinion. When it hits, it hits HARD. I think an 8/10. I don't think I was ever bored for a minute.
Godzilla Minus One: I often find myself drawn to the mood of the original Godzilla. Sometimes I wonder if the constraints of its time allows the mind to fill in the gaps. This movie provides us no quarter to do so. It replicates this horror without leaving any to chance. I think this because more than any other in this series, the stakes feel truely desperate and personal. This felt like watching one of those truelly classic films for the first time (oddly enough I was reminded of Jaws...) I'm not sure if it surpasses Shin or the 1954 original yet, but I give this movie a 10/10 with no hesitation.
Tumblr media
Knights of Sidonia (Manga): I'll be honest, the first few chapters did a lot to turn me away the first time I tried this, but this series is certainly not the collection of anime tropes I expected. The art is amazing once Tsutomu Nihei hits his stride. The intricate detailing and compositions have to be seen to be believed. I will applaud it for leaving a lot of room to breathe. Most wouldn't resist overexplaining the aliens. The interpersonal story is pretty gutsy, especially considering the resolution to the romantic angle and some surprisingly not weird treatment of characters with fluid genders. However, I think a lot of characters fell through the cracks in favor of the harem angle that was starting to develop (typified by the robot tsundere who felt really unnecessary). 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Furi Demake: I get that this is just a little fun proof of concept, ut the Game Bakers kinda under-prooved a few important parts. Namely, the music is generic and the hit hit detection for parrying was wonky. EX: a ground slam you are supposed to parry from right below confused the directional inputs since it can't figure out which way you are facing. 6/10 but I would play a full version of this concept.
Tumblr media
Jetborne Racing and Star Trek Bridge Crew: Early VR games with a predominant online component, slow gameplay and wonky controls? in 2023? Yeah Jetborne is unplayable since there's no one online and Bridge Crew is just unintuitive to play. Instead of space mysteries the gameplay consists of figuring out how to undo your space-parking brake 2/10
