US Native Scorpion ID
So this is a project I’ve wanted to do for a while but was extremely daunted by. the task. Identifying US native scorpions is hard, a lot of literature on the subject is out of date and there are precious few knowledgeable people that are working on the subject. To make matters harder for me, I wanted to aim this guide at the layman naturalist, someone who was going to look at surface level identification features but not know or care what trichobothria patterns were. As such, I’d like to write a disclaimer and say this guide is for entertainment purposes only. I have excluded many, many species from it and chose to only focus on scorpions I thought were common, readily identifiable, or interesting. I also excluded subspecies, and intentionally picked examples for the pictures I thought were the most obvious or distinct. Some scorpions in the US are medically significant, and anyone can have an allergic reaction to a sting, so caution must be taken when identifying. I also took most of these pictures off inaturalist or bugguide, but I will supply some of my own pictures here when applicable. Family organization is based on the classification currently up on TheScorpionFiles, but taxonomy is subject to change so that's another disclaimer.
Without further ado, let’s talk about scorpions.
The US is a treasure trove of scorpion activity. We are home to 7 unique families of scorpions, some of which are only found in the US and Mexico. The southwestern United States is one of the most diverse and populated scorpion hot spots in the world. Despite this variety, most people don’t pay much attention to the scorpions they live alongside. Aside from a few standout examples (Arizona Bark Scorpion, Desert Hairy Scorpion) US native scorpions are almost entirely unknown. I wanted to make this guide to introduce people who didn’t know much about scorpions to some of the diversity the US has to offer, as well as be a basic primer to scorpion identification and morphology.
So first things first, some basic scorpion biology.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some important things to note in this diagram is the chela refers to the wide part of the pincers not including either the fixed or movable finger. The hand refers to the chela plus the fixed finger, with the movable finger connecting to the hand. Similarly, the aculeus refers to just the stinger, and the vesicle refers to just the venom bulb before the stinger. The telson refers to the aculeus plus the vesicle. The telson sometimes includes a subaculeur tooth, which looks like a second, smaller stinger on the vesicle. This can be an important diagnostic feature. I will informally refer to a scorpion's “claw”, “body”, and “tail” to make things easier. Another important diagnostic feature is the presence of granulation, which are distinct bumps on a scorpion carapace that makes it look granular or rough. Sometimes the granulation can be in a distinct line, which is called a carinae. There are smooth carinae too, which are just raised distinct lines without granulation, but I won’t be talking about those in this guide. This guide is primarily going to focus on features you can easily see without flipping a scorpion over or using a microscope, so although I highly recommend you look into scorpion biology I won’t go into too much here.
The Scorpions
Anuroctonidae
Two large “humps” on the prosoma
Noticeably darker fingers
Swollen stinger, more prominent in males
Smooth carinae on the claw darkly tinted and distinct
Median eyes close together and on a raised darkened hump, almost giving the appearance of having one median eye
Buthidae
Thin claws
Long, thin tail (markedly longer in males)
Front of prosoma has a slight “v” shape
Chactidae
Distinct “v” in front edge of the prosoma
Diplocentridae
Distinct subaculear tooth
Distinctly shiny
Little to no granulation
Distinct “v” shape in front edge of prosoma
Hadruridae
Hairy tail
Large
Front of prosoma curved outwards
Superstitioniidae
Vaejovidae
Front edge of prosoma mostly straight with only slight notching

Arrived (1-29-23)
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Day, Dawn and Night... But the High Lady of the Spring Court was absent.
Rhysand glanced at the empty seat. Where was Tamlin? This meeting was important, she couldn't be running late.
But she was. He felt the bond between them grow taut, as she grew closer to the meeting hall. Six heads turned towards the door, as a tall, blonde female entered, followed by a red haired male.
Tamlin Aculeus, High Lady of Spring, and her silver-tongued courtier, Lucien Vanserra. Eyes as green as spring surveyed the room, missing nothing in their observant look. Those green eyes landed on Rhysand, and subtly widened, the flecks of gold in them glowing faintly.
Long, lithe legs carried Tamlin to her seat, beside Tarquin Aestas, High Lord of Summer. He smiled as she sat beside him, eyes as blue as the summer sea, bright and friendly. Tamlin was quiet as she looked each of the High Lords over with sharp green eyes, inclining her head towards each of them, starting with Tarquin.
Kallias Stiriacus, and his wife, Vivienne, of the Winter Court, hair as white as freshly fallen snow, and eyes a pale, winter sky blue.
Eris Vanserra, the new High Lord of Autumn, who returned Tamlin's stare with a sharp glower, russet eyes wary.
Helion Lumen, High Lord of Day who grinned broadly at her, golden accessories and bright amber eyes gleaming as he gave her a wink.
Thesan Prima, Lord of Dawn, who lowered his head in response to Tamlin's inclined head, brown eyes warm.
And... Rhysand Tenebris. His star-flecked violet eyes bored into hers, and Tamlin felt the bond, the mating bond that tied their souls together, grow hot. Her high cheekbones warmed with a blush, and she sat down, gaze flickering to Lucien, who placed a broad hand on her knee. A comforting, reassuring touch. Tamlin could still feel Rhysand's eyes on her.
"Now that we are all present," Helion's voice, a warm baritone, caused her to look up. "The meeting may begin." Tamlin meet Rhysand's gaze squarely, bright spring green colliding with cold violet.

Unlike most changelings, Aculeus' horn is larger than normal. Not by much but he prides himself in having a horn that is five percent larger than the typical drone.
Unfortunately, while this is true, it is overlooked because of his other major trait

#2133 - Rosa rubiginosa - Sweet-Brier
Tumblr media
AKA sweetbriar rose, or eglantine (Middle English eglentyn, Old French aiglantin, from aiglent 'sweetbrier'), from Vulgar Latin aculentus, from Latin aculeus 'prickle'. The leaves do indeed smell pleasantly of apple.
A native rose uncommon to rare across most of its native range - most of Europe - but a highly invasive weed everywhere else. The seeds, eaten with the very Vitamin-C rich hips, are easily spread by cattle.

First art of the new year and it's who else but he!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In case it isn't abundantly clear by now I care him very much.
Super happy with how his costume came out. I never thought I'd have the skills to make it look right but here we are!
Some highlights of his gear:
Stingers of the Scorpion - the straps around his hand house two claw-like metal stingers each. The claws come out of the metal nubs when a button on the palm of the strap is pressed and collapse back when pressed again. These stingers are connected to a line hidden in his body suit the laces the claws with his own paralytic venom stored in a reservoir on his back between his hoodie and body suit.
Boots of the Scorpion - While just a simple pair of boots at first glance, the treads are outfitted with nanotech that functions like a scorpion's ungues and allow Aculeus to grip to walls and even unside down on ceilings. This effect is harder to perform on extra-smooth surfaces like glass and certain polished metals.
Eyes of the Scorpion - This pair of tinted glasses is outfitted with a HUD that gives him information about his environment, target, mission, etc.
Belt of the Scorpion - Not just good for holding up pants, this belt is the perfect place to attach pouches when additional storage is necessary. The buckle also hides a secret compartment for a cyanide capsule. A spy's secrets must die with them after all.

I was going off the sizes of US centruroides and thought these guys would be a lot smaller, so *these enclosures are too small for this size scorpion*, but I'm going to an exotic expo tomorrow and will get bigger enclosures to move them up to. Central American centruroides are a lot bigger, and (usually) more potent! Unfortunately the female has her aculeus (stinger) clipped, this is done by people who collect wild scorpions for profit, and is both unnecessary and cruel. I contacted the seller about this (they weren't the one who clipped her, all the other scorpions were fine) and she doesn't seem too affected by it, as he said she still eats fine. Sometimes a clipped stinger can cause a scorpion to refuse food. If you're buying scorpions in person, check for any damages like this, if most of a sellers scorpions are clipped then they're either mass collecting them for profit or buying them from someone who does. If buying scorpions online, a seller should inform you about damages such as this before you buy, as it could negatively affect the health of your animal.
