Bad cravings
Sherlock is having drug cravings. established relationship, 1k+ words.
It’s probably a good thing that his nails are short because he probably would have broke skin by now if they weren’t.
He had been scratching his arms for about half an hour (although it felt like it had been hours) not because they were particularly itchy but because he was desperately trying to ground his mind.
He was fighting his various addictions and John wasn’t currently at the flat to help distract him because he was at the clinic covering for a coworker that was apparently going to his third funeral this month and couldn’t work.
At the moment he so wanted to get fucked up. High, drunk, anything. The scratching wasn’t really helping much and he didn’t want to leave any real marks or John would know what had been going on and he didn’t want John to know he was having yet another “bad day” this week. It was pitiful how much he had been fighting himself to stay clean lately.
Cases had been few and far apart, most of them being simple which translates to not enough to keep his mind busy so like always he had been craving his own self-destruction.
“Fucking hell!” He yelled to the empty flat. He decided pacing wouldn’t hurt so he paced the whole flat all the way through again and again.
It felt like he was going out of his fucking mind. All he wanted to do was go out and find someone willing to deal to him. He wondered if any of his old dealers were still around. If they were he could just- no. He can’t.
‘Think about how disappointed John would be’ he told himself over and over again. He had relapsed before and the look John gave him was enough for him to truly try to get better.
He climbed the stairs to John’s old room (That had become their storage room since John had moved into his room) and walked in. He knew John had a spare handgun in his room somewhere and within minutes he had deduced where John had hidden it.
He made sure the gun was loaded before he took it downstairs. He flopped on the couch and aimed the gun at the wall and fired three times.
He set the gun down and felt the dopamine from shooting the gun. It wasn’t nearly as good as the things he was craving but it dulled the want just a bit and at the moment that was all he could ask for.
A moment later though he heard footsteps that he recognized as Mrs. Hudson’s. She gave a short knock on the door before she walked in (This was a vast improvement from her usual which she had been trying to change ever since she walked in on John and him in a… predicament)
“Mrs. Hudson,” He acknowledged.
“Sherlock! Have you been shooting the walls again?” She asked looking at the wall that now had three new bullet holes.
“No, of course not.” He said and slyly hid the gun under one of the couch pillows after putting it on safety.
“I don’t believe you, There are definitely more holes in that wall than the last time I was here.” She said and turned to him.
He saw from the way her eyes traveled that she saw the red marks on his arms from his scratching. She had known him for a long time and she also knew when he was fighting addiction.
“Tut, tut,” She said “Would you like some tea, dear?”
“That’d be lovely, Mrs. Hudson.” He was suddenly quite grateful for her barging in.
She put the kettle on the stove and then left the flat to go fetch some biscuits. After a few minutes she was back with a plate full of biscuits and she went back to making the tea.
Soon it was ready and she was pouring them both a cup. He sipped his tea feeling a bit better than earlier although he didn’t have much faith in that feeling lasting.
Mrs. Hudson talked about some dull subject that he wasn’t really listening to until he excused himself to go to the bathroom and left. When he was in the bathroom though he just stood there. The cravings were coming back and they were almost worse than before. God he wished John would get back. John always seemed to be able to get him through it.
He went back out and chit-chatted with Mrs. Hudson, trying to distract himself. Mrs. Hudson did most of the chatting once again and he tried to focus his mind on whatever she was saying but his thought kept on straying.
Just when he was close to asking Mrs. Hudson to leave so he could look for a few old phone numbers the man he had been dying to see all day walked through the front door.
“Hello, Mrs. Hudson. How are you feeling, Sherlock?” John said setting his work bag down on the table next to one of his experiments.
“Fine,” he said. He had easily deduced that Mrs. Hudson had called John at work to come home early but he didn’t even care. John had only walked through the door and was making him feel better just by his presence.
“I must be going,” Mrs. Hudson said getting up “I brought biscuits for you both.” She told John.
“Thank you,” John said sincerely.
“Any time, dear.” She said and left.
“She called you didn’t she?” He asked when she was gone.
“No, of course not. I just happened to get off early.” John said but from the way he subtly avoided eye contact he could tell he was lying.
“I know she called you,” he said.
“Fine,” John said as he took off his coat and hung it up “She did and I got someone to cover the rest of my shift so that I could make sure you don’t do anything stupid.”
“Thank you.”
“What?”
“Thank you, for coming home,” he said simply.
“Shit, you’re saying thank you. The cravings are pretty bad huh?” John asked coming to sit on the couch next to him.
He leaned his head against John’s shoulder and sighed “Very bad.”
“Well, I’m with you now,” John said kissing him on the top of the head.
Even if the bad days never went away he knew John would always be by his side to help him through
I so want to get effed up rn but instead I wrote this word barf.

I don’t think I can emphasize enough just how much Elementary understood the core of Sherlock Holmes’ character, and the kind of cases and people he is drawn to, right from the very first episode.
The pilot opens with a wealthy woman’s murder. The prime suspect is a man who is a patient of the woman’s husband, a doctor, for help with his mental disorder. The man is desperately trying to avoid any triggers that may cause him to become violent, as he has been in the past. The doctor decides to use this man as a tool to kill his wife to collect her life insurance. He manipulates both his patient and his wife, alters the man’s medications, and ignores the man’s pleas for help, in order to set a scenario that is guaranteed to trigger the man’s violence - resulting in his wife’s death and later his patient’s.
When Sherlock pieces this together, he confronts the doctor, which leads to this:

And that’s what drives Sherlock to confront the doctor directly. There’s no smugness in being right, or for figuring out who the murderer was and how he did it. Sherlock realizes that this man’s patient was just another victim - someone who desperately wanted and sought help, only to be mistreated. Sherlock Holmes in this adaptation cares so deeply about people, especially those who are denied help when they need it most, and we learn all of this from the very first case.

cw: explicit mention of taking drugs, and harming someone
people love to say sherlock from elementary is crazy but like. have we considered joan watson? sherlock goes out and buys heroin from this guy after like 4 days of not sleeping and then being kidnapped and hospitalized, and then he tells joan that he wants to DOSE micheal with HEROIN and the first thing that joan says is "well he would taste it in most liquids, so we could grind it in his food" LIKE THE WOMAN IS INSANE. she was a surgeon. god help us all

hi, hope you're doing well! i know you joined the team in s2 when a lot of that groundwork was laid in s1, but what were the discussions around the portrayal of sherlock's depression/addiction like? i love how elementary seemed to portray his depression as more dysthmic especially compared to contemporary shows like You're the Worst/Bojack Horseman, though it seemed to be less of a focus in later seasons. also thanks for helping my fave show of all time come to life!
I'm fine except for the annoying covid.
We talked about Sherlock's addiction all the time, though less so about his depression. I'm not 100% sure he has depression, TBH. Maybe bipolar disorder? Whatever type of depression he may or may not have is complicated by a LOT of other issues. We always believed Sherlock's neuroatypicality was extremely atypical and thus difficult to pin down. We wrote that part of him as, well, Sherlock. Diagnose at your own peril.
That said, I can certainly see why you might see him as dysthymic. Your understanding of Sherlock's issues may vary.
And thanks for the kind words.

Distract yourself, try some other activity to focus on, read a book, go on a google session to learn something new, write with someone or call someone, watch some interesting videos on Youtube, exercise a bit, or just go to sleep. Can't crave if you are asleep, can you?

🔎🕵🏾‍♂️Sneak Peek: Sherlock Nino🕵🏾‍♂️🔎
Couldn't resist sharing these scenes from my upcoming headcanon "How Marc Got The Coffee". This first one starts off with Nino and Nathaniel discussing interrogating Marc to find out his "supplier".
Nathaniel: (shoots Nino an incredulous look) “Supplier”? Really, Nino?
Nino: (defensively) Hey, technically caffeine is considered a drug! I looked it up!
Nathaniel: (crosses his arms) Not an illegal one. Hence why I feel like you are treating Marc like a dangerous criminal.
Nino: Oh come on, Nath! The last thing I want to do is treat Marc like a criminal!
Nathaniel: (raises an eyebrow) Then what’s with the Sherlock Holmes cosplay?
Nino: Because we’re trying to solve a mystery and I thought it would fit the aesthetic! (sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose).
Later during interrogation.......
Marc: Nath, why is Nino dressed as Sherlock Holmes?
Nathaniel: (sighs heavily and pinches the bridge of his nose) I have asked the same question, Marc.
Marc: Wait, does that mean you are supposed to be Watson?
Nathaniel: (shakes his head and glances annoyed at Nino) No, apparently I’m supposed to be “good cop”.
Marc: (tilts his tired head in confusion) Wait…(yawns)...I’m confused….(points to Nathaniel) If you’re “good cop”...(points to Nino) and you’re “Sherlock Holmes”....then who’s “bad cop”...or…what’s even going on here? What are you guys even doing?
Nathaniel: (smirks) Actually, Nino’s supposed to be the “bad cop”. The Sherlock Holmes cosplay is just Nino doing his own thing.
Marc: (gives Nino an incredulous look) You do realize your “Sherlock Holmes” cosplay doesn’t make any sense if you guys are doing “Good Cop, Bad Cop”, right? I mean, for one thing, Sherlock Holmes was far too intelligent and dignified to resort to such a cliche interrogation tactic that wasn’t even developed during his time! Not to mention that Sherlock Holmes didn’t even work for the British Police! Yes, they did work together on a few cases, specifically with Inspectors Lestrade and Gregson the most, but still-...
Nino: (slams his hand hard on the desk, startling Marc with a jump) That’s enough out of you! Nathaniel and I are the ones asking the questions here, Anciel!
Marc: (rolls his eyes) And I thought Jean was over dramatic...

sherlock & co. review from an insane person (me) coz this is like. the 25th? sherlock adaptation i've checked out so ofc i have opinions on everything ever. and ik ppl who work on indie podcasts browse tumblr sometimes so just in case you work on this DON'T click keep reading, this post is not for youuu shoo. thanks x
ok so far it's like. fine? which is lowkey sad coz i wish it was smtg i really liked but it hasn't gripped me yet which is a shame but yknow. early days. i'm giving it time since it's only 15 episodes so far
my main issue is like. i really wish it wasn't so obviously influenced by bbc but it just so clearly is which is a shaaame like it's better than bbc in every aspect but yknow. not a high bar to clear. like it kinda feels like they liked a lot of things abt bbc and set out to fix the bad parts (h&w friendship being nonexistent, the mysteries being shit) but just kept the rest? in some places keeping things that were invented by bbc which is. baffling tbh
i'm not really picky when it comes to h&w personalities like i think it's fine to just do whatever you want w them, i think it's really fun when an adaptation gives them different personalities than what you're used to but, and this is where it feels far too bbc-ish for comfort, i just don't like it when sherlock is a cunt for no reason? like. he's not a mean person he's only mean in bbc coz moffat thought house md was cool and ripped it off. can we stop making him mean pleeeease 😭 he's just some guy..................
h&w relationship wise it's like... ok so i tend to go into adaptations with a fully clean slate so like i never let my general attachment to them influence how i view them in specific adaptations, the work itself needs to sell me on both the characters and the relationship and like... here neither of those really happened yet which makes me sad coz i think by now it should've but i'm giving it time. at least they're friends and i like that watson is useful for cases/knows things holmes doesn't sometimes coz thats like. such an essential element to sh stories for me and a loooottt of adaptations tend to just completely forget it so that's a win but idk if anything they're too tame? like i dont expect a romance but they can't just be casual friends they need to be bat shit crazy about each other. to me. but like maybe that'll develop over the rest of the podcast we'll see
kinda related to that point but case-wise i think holmes is a bit too ahead of everyone else sometimes which isn't inherently a problem but it does once again smell of bbc which like. noone should ever emulate moffat writing don't do that 🙏 god bles. but i've been able to solve every case along with/before the mcs which is like. thee point of mystery stories for me so yea i really like the stories themselves so far, especially the way they manage to make them solvable even without visuals or narration. OH and i almost forgot but i rly like the soundtrack, i love it when sh soundtracks have a heavy emphasis on violins coz. yknow
howeverr i am on my hands and knees begging them not to give watson a girlfriend tho like please oh myfffucking god . obvs watsonlock doesn't usually factor into my enjoyment of adaptations given that like. y'know. out of the hundreds out there theres only two where either of them is even gay so it's not something i expect nor require but like. to me it is essential that these two ppl are insane abt each other and don't really have anyone else, definitely noone important. like even the rdj movies got this despite ritchie's obsession w the 2 men 1 woman dynamic so idk why i'm constantly having to wage a war against random unnecessary romances for either watson or, god forbid, holmes. when the only interesting relationship either of these men have is with each other. that one granada holmes quote about them choosing not to include mary coz holmes and watson dont need anyone else etc etc. like i seriously dislike it when they introduce anyone else like cmonnnnnn thog dont care
anyway tldr. i guess if asked to pick a short description i'd say. promising? i hope it's gonna be good in the long run. the way they do mysteries is already something i like so. i hope they keep that up and i hope the h&w relationship evolves into something i enjoy coz so far i'm like. i can see the bones of smtg i'll potentially like but it's not there yet. but also like. this is an indie production i'm listening to for free so ion wanna rip into it these are mainly just what i liked/disliked based on the preferences i developed with this one quick trick (grow up completely insane abt sherlock holmes -> consume every adaptation that you can get your paws on -> no profit)

The Cigarette Duet and Since I First Saw Your Face by Stavia Scott Grayson (@artemisastarte)
Recently I heard a song called Cigarette Duet - and the lyrics really match Holmes' and Watson's drug situation in both Since I First Saw Your Face (and also the original works by Arthur Conan Doyle) so I simply had to share it with everyone ^^ Cigarette Duet is a song sung by Princess Chelsea, who sings the lyrics belonging to the cigarette addict (in our case, coke/morphine and Holmes) and Jonathan Bree, who sings the parts of the concerned lover/friend (Watson).
It's just a cigarette and it cannot be that bad Honey, don't you love me and you know it makes me sad
Just like Holmes telling Watson that the cocaine is fine and that it really helps him - clears his head, makes him think faster, whatnot - and Watson telling Holmes he feels hurt to see Holmes harming himself in this way...
It's just a cigarette and it harms your pretty lungs Well it's only twice a week so there's not much of a chance It's just a cigarette, it'll soon be only ten Honey, can't you trust me? When I want to stop I can
Watson asking Holmes about how often he takes the cocaine, and Holmes talking of how little he takes it and how he has complete control over himself 🥲
It's just a cigarette and I only did it once It's just a cigarette, it'll soon be only ten It's only twice a week so there's not much of a chance It'll make you sick, girl, there's not much of a chance It's just a cigarette, and I'm sorry that I did it It's just a cigarette and you'll be sorry that you did it Honey, can't you trust me? When I want to stop I can
