You might assume that Dr. Anthony Fauci, after 54 years working at the National Institutes of Health and helping save countless lives, has retired so he can rest. However, Dr. Fauci doesn’t have time to retire.
Last month, Fauci joined Georgetown University School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases as a Distinguished Professor. He was also appointed to the university’s McCourt School of Public Policy.
“I’ve also been busy lecturing and writing my memoir, and since I’ve been out of the NIH for seven months, I’m not following the ins and outs of the government, but I am paying attention to what’s going on with PEPFAR,” he tells me.
PEPFAR is the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which was signed into law 20 years ago this summer by President George W. Bush. It serves as a conduit to providing HIV medications to individuals in impoverished nations who would otherwise lack access to these drugs.
When I spoke to Fauci a couple years ago on the 40th anniversary of the discovery of HIV, he cited the opportunity to be the architect of the program as one of his greatest achievements. "It is the largest commitment by any nation to address a single disease in history," he told me. "It's been an honor to help lead this. I really value my participation in this program that has already saved 15-18 million (in 2021) lives around the world."
“PEPFAR impact has been truly remarkable,” Fauci told me during our phone call Friday evening. "It is one of this country’s greatest global health policies in history. It’s been a resounding success, and has saved at least 25 million lives worldwide and it provides antiretroviral treatments for over 20 million people worldwide.”
However, groundless claims from anti-abortion activists have put the program in jeopardy. Conservative and anti-abortion groups sent a letter to Republicans in Congress who are responsible for PEPFAR’s reauthorization. The letter said that PEPFAR funds are “used by nongovernmental organizations that promote abortions and push a radical gender ideology abroad.” They provided no evidence to back their claim.
Also, the ultra-conservative Heritage Foundation released a report that said Congress needs to “reassess” PEPFAR. The report claimed, “The Biden Administration has misused the program as a well-funded vehicle to promote its domestic radical social agenda overseas, as it has done with other foreign aid programs.” This so-called report also did not provide any proof.
As a result, Republicans in Congress are threatening not to reauthorize the program.
“The idea that this program would be interrupted, despite its overwhelming success, is unfortunate,” Fauci said. “There’s a real danger to associate the program with cultural issues as opposed to scientific ones that clearly show PEPFAR is saving lives.”
“It seems paradoxical that abortion rights groups who fight for life want to interfere with a program that has saved millions of lives,” Fauci pointed out. “If the program doesn’t function, lives aren’t saved, millions of them.”
Instead of castigating the program, shouldn't these groups, as well as all Americans, be celebrating the 20th anniversary of this milestone? “What’s ironic is that it was signed into law by a conservative Republican President, and it is without question George W. Bush’s greatest achievement. It took years to put together, in a bipartisan way, and it is one of the world’s signature global health initiatives. The thought of it not being authorized is not only dangerous, but disastrous.”

An very incomplete list of trans murder victims in 2024
(this list includes people that identify as non-binary and/or gender-nonconforming)
Samantha Gómez Fonseca: A 37 year old transgender activist and politician who was shot multiple times in a car in Mexico City on January 14. The murder was planned
Miriam Nohemi Ríos: Killed (shot) on January 11 in the central Mexican state of Michoacán. She was a trans human rights activist.
Nex Benedict: Beaten in an Owasso High School bathroom by three other students on February 7. He later died due to his injuries at just 16 YEARS OLD!
Gaby Ortiz: She was a renowned stylist and reported dead on January 6 in the state of Hidalgo. Her body was found on the road along with a cardboard written message next to her containing threats. Her body showed visible signs of violence.
Parsa: The the 17 YEAR OLD Iranian was stabbed to death on January 30 by their father for "not conforming to traditional gender norms".
Amanda Soares (Mandy Gin Drag): She was a trans singer known as Mandy Gin Drag and found dead February 1 in São Gonçalo. Witnesses reported stab wounds on her body.
Kitty Monroe: (because of conflicting information on their preferred pronouns I'm going to use they/them) On January 1 they were run over by a truck driven by a man who was chasing them (Phoenix/US) . It is assumed that they were targeted for being trans. After their death they were deadnamed and misgendered by the 'Republic'. In a YouTube video of the previous year Monroe said: “I’m not afraid to exist, but I’m afraid of what other people would see, I’m afraid of what their perception of me is.”
Bunitinha: A 57 year old trans woman beaten and suffocated to death by her partner on January 13 in São Paulo.
Its barely been two months.. jesus fucking christ

Lvl 2: The Sims 4 & How It's Resisting Gender Binary Norms
Ready, player?
The video game industry has had an interesting history with gender, sexuality, and gender representation to say the least. But one game in recent years has had a firm footing in capturing life outside of heteronormativity.
For today I want to talk about one of my favorite games, The Sims 4.
So let's get into it :)
Tumblr media
Since the first release of The Sims franchise in 2000, the game has been evolving its inclusivity: The Sims 1 allowed same-sex relationships, The Sims 2 allowed same-sex sims to have a “Joined Union” (marriage but not really), and The Sims 3 finally ‘legalized’ same-sex marriage.
Despite these inclusive implements, the gameplay didn’t exactly SIMulate all walks of life. Until The Sims 4.
For gender expression, The Sims 4 hadn’t really explored much beyond gender binary norms. Prior to 2016, the players were allowed to customize their sim’s walk style before their sim’s gender.
The Sims 4’s massive ‘Gender Update’ expanded the boundaries of gender expression. Customizable options (like hair, clothes, and accessories) in CAS that were previously locked behind male/female frames were now available for players to use regardless of their sim’s frame. The Sims Team even took a step further and allowed players to customize their sim’s ability to get pregnant or not as well as separate the sims frame from their gender, which was an insanely awesome feature for them to add.
In other words, they allowed for sims to be super queer and didn’t determine gender based on the sims frame or their gender expression.
And this is important: Pushing the boundaries of heteronormativity and the gender binary is ethical and inclusive, allowing for other people to be, to share their identities in games which are often exclusive in representation. If popular media, like video games, were unafraid to implement more boundary-less characters and language then I think more people would be open to learning (and accepting) queer life.
But there was still work to be done. Although players were allowed to create and represent queer sims visually in CAS and explore queer relationships in Live Mode, there still was an issue with pronouns in text-based notifications and gameplay. If the players wanted to have a gender-non-conforming sim they would still have to use he/him or she/her pronouns.
Sooo, the they/thems or neo-pronouns were practically non-existent in the Sims 4 for another 6 YEARS.
In 2022, The Sims 4 released its pronoun update that allowed players to choose their sim’s pronouns and even go as far as to write in their sim’s pronouns. This allowed players to create sims that had neo-pronouns, multiple pronouns, and they/them pronouns. Finally…
Then earlier this year on July 28th, The Sims 4 launched their sexuality update that allowed players to fully classify and customize their sim’s sexuality. So, instead of all sims being coded as pansexual and fraternizing with ANY sim regardless of gender/sex, sims were now able to be classified as strictly attracted to male, female, all sims, or even no sims at all. So, sims can now officially be asexual!
Throughout the year The Sims Team has also added customizable options for sims in CAS like binders and top surgery scars. Hopefully, they’ll start working on the makeup from masculine frame sims soon…
What do you think? Do you think The Sims has done a good job of expanding on gender expression? Are there any other games that do this? Drop a lil comment down below :)

How All of Us Strangers Depicts LGBTQ+ Grief
All of Us Strangers tells the parallel stories of Adam’s (Andrew Scott) struggles to cope with the deaths of both his parents and his neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), with whom he hallucinates a loving and intimately fulfilling relationship. In doing this, viewers are confronted with two contrasting yet related types of grief, both intimately tied to Adam’s identity as a gay man and the constraints that accepting this identity fully has put on him.
Harry is the only other person who lives in Adam’s building and, spoiler alert, despite Adam’s depiction of their whirlwind romance throughout the course of the film, Harry has in fact been dead the entire time. His death supposedly took place between the opening scene, in which he drunkenly propositions Adam in their hallway, and when Adam begins recounting their passionate, substance-ridden romance. When Adam discovers the truth, that it was all in his head, he is clearly devastated, but I read this as being indicative of more than a surface level grief for a potential romantic partner. Adam hallucinated Harry’s position in his life, no one else was privy to the connection he felt they had, and thus he was not allowed to publicly mourn that loss. Sue Rakowski writes in an article about LGBTQ+ grief that “gay grief is marginalized; many of us…are excluded from experiencing society's mourning process”. Those couples who are not legally married are not entitled to legal and financial aid, those who lose partners must weigh whether or not it is safe to tell their employers and families that they have experienced a loss, medical staff may mistreat those who try to comfort their loved ones in their dying days due to bias (“Gay Grief Is Different.” Advocate.com, 31 May 2023, www.advocate.com/commentary/2018/12/01/gay-grief-different.). The way Adam is forced to conceal his grief due to not knowing Harry parallels the struggle of many LGBTQ+ individuals to conceal their grief from those who would not be safe to know the truth.
Tumblr media
Adam is older than Harry, and at times he cringes at Harry’s openness and use of modern gay slang—like referring to himself as “queer”—which is understandable seeing as Adam came of age during the AIDS epidemic and was bullied for his sexuality. He is less comfortable in public during their imagined relationship, and uses the hallucination as a way to grapple with his own desires throughout their journey. He introduces Adam to ketamine, gay bars, and the version of the queer community he was a part of in his “prime”. Through all of these scenes contextualized by Adam’s inevitable grief, the audience sees how Adam still has a deep seated shame directed towards his gayness, with fears that it will damage those he loves, and the way he internalizes the loss of his “partner” and finds himself excluded from conventional methods of grieving further depicts the way that shame isolates him from society. He is not lonely solely because he is gay, as he tells his mother at one point, but it does seem clear that his loneliness somewhat stems from perceived ostracization which breeds self-loathing.
Interestingly, grappling with Harry’s death is not the primary mourning journey explored throughout the plot of All of Us Strangers. Adam’s parents died in a car accident when he was twelve, and some of the most impactful scenes in the film depict his disclosure of his sexuality to a vision of his mother and reconciliation with one of his father. In these scenes and others, we see how his grieving of his family mirrors the disclosure of his sexuality, or what Rev. Anne-Marie Zanzal calls the “Unexpected Grief” of coming out. In her essay, Zanzal details that when she came out to her family as a lesbian later in life, she experienced a deep sense of loss and grief which she had not prepared for. She both mourned the life she had lived presenting as a straight, married woman and the future of heterosexual domesticity she had imagined for herself (“The Unexpected Grief of the LGBTQIA+ Coming out Experience.” What’s Your Grief?, 24 Oct. 2023, whatsyourgrief.com/lgbtqia-grief-of-coming-out/.). If we metaphorically view the loss of the heterosexual life queer people are promised by society from a young age as a death, it becomes clear that Adam’s hallucinated self-disclosure and letting go of his parents in late adulthood could  partially be him grieving the straight version of himself.
Tumblr media
In telling his parents about his queerness and the pain it caused him throughout his childhood, despite their mixed bag of reactions and his father’s assertion that he already knew, Harry is letting go of the heterosexual version of himself he had been maintaining for them post-mortem. He grieves the life his family thought he was going to have, even wanted him to have, by telling a story that makes it seem as though he is only grieving their deaths. This release of the expectation of a heterosexual life is again paralleled by his release of the visions of his parents and his final acceptance of their passing. When his parents leave him at the end of the film, they tell him he must let go of them and live his life fully with Harry. If they are representative of Adam’s clinging to heterosexual societal ideals and Harry of the tumultuous reality of being gay and living a life against the norm, this scene takes on new meaning. His parents are telling him to embrace the painful unknown of queerness despite the grief.
Circling back to Adam’s use of Harry as a stand-in to explore his own identity and the way he is forced to grieve that imagined relationship in the shadows, the audience sees another way in which grief and stepping into a queer life are similar: The pain does not go away, but that is not your fault. When someone dies, it will always hurt, albeit less frequently and violently, and in a similar way the life of a marginalized person today can never be exempt from the societal constraints which ostracize them from traditional heterosexual markers of success and failure. However, by positioning the scene in which Adam discovers Harry's body directly after that in which he lets go of his parents for the final time, it is clear that their message of moving on remains unchanged. In other words, there will always be pain (grief), but to refuse authenticity out of fear is to wallow in that grief forever and shut yourself off from the potential beauty of the future.

Pete Buttigieg wasn’t sworn in as the first out gay U.S. president this year, but he racked up several achievements that he once thought were beyond his reach — including a cabinet position and fatherhood.
The former mayor of South Bend, Ind., who sought the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination before throwing his support to Joe Biden, was nominated by President Biden and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as secretary of the Department of Transportation. This made Buttigieg the first out member of the LGBTQ+ community to hold a Senate-confirmed cabinet post. At his confirmation hearing in January, he introduced his husband, Chasten Glezman Buttigieg, to the chamber, and thanked Chasten for his sacrifices and support. A couple of weeks later, Pete Buttigieg was easily confirmed to the position, by a vote of 86-13.
Then in September, the Buttigiegs announced they had become parents of newborn twins, Penelope Rose and Joseph August. Pete became the first gay dad in a president’s cabinet, and the news was the subject of celebratory articles around the nation.
Tumblr media
Many of the milestones in his life are things he once considered impossible for a gay man, Buttigieg notes. “I became a military reserve officer during the era of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ believing I might permanently have to choose between public service and a full home life,” he says. “I often reflect on how recently it was legally impossible for someone like me to serve in uniform — and would have been considered politically impossible for someone like me to serve openly as mayor of my hometown. Just a couple generations earlier, being out — or being outed — might mean being unable to serve in any government job at all.”
“Yet earlier this year,” he continues, “I was sworn in as the first out Senate-confirmed member of a president’s cabinet, with my husband, Chasten, standing by my side, holding the Bible. And more recently, we became parents to two beautiful children. It’s strange to think that having a spouse and children — in many ways the most normal thing about my life — is so extraordinary as to have been basically impossible just a few years ago. But this shift shows the power of advocacy and courage, as people like me walk down a path that so many others have helped to clear when the hard way was the only way.”
As additional confirmation of Buttigieg’s high profile, he became the subject of a documentary film, Mayor Pete, about his presidential campaign. Directed by Jesse Moss, the film screened at festivals in New York and Chicago in October, then was released on Amazon Prime.
Buttigieg is still reflecting on how far he’s come and committed to further progress for the LGBTQ+ community. “Knowing that America is better off when all who serve it can bring our whole selves to the job, I am proud to lead a diverse workforce in the Department of Transportation and to ensure our policies protect the safety and rights of LGBTQ+ people as they move through their daily lives,” he says. “Of course, it’s clear that there is a long way to go with regard to full equality, especially for transgender Americans, who need and deserve support from all of us, particularly gay men like me whose lives have become so much more secure in recent years. Yet I’m here as evidence of how much can change in our country — and I’m proud to be part of an administration that champions equality at home and around the globe.

Finally, an informational post on genderqueer identity!
(Image description: ten square images with blue, white, and lavender gradient backgrounds; every image has a border across the top and bottom with a thin black line framed by a black diamond on each side and every image also has black text.
1) Large centered text that reads "A Brief Introduction to Genderqueer History and Identity", below that is the instagram handle "@genderqueer.positivity"
2) "Genderqueer is a term that was created in the mid-1990's to cover a wide range of Queer experiences of gender, as well as marginalized gender identities and expressions. In its earliest usage, "gender queer" was a term for those who were Queer specifically because of gender, rather than sexuality."
3) "The earliest usage of "gender queer" comes from the April/May first edition of the zine GenderTrash From Hell, edited by Xanthra Phillippa Mackay." Below this is a quote from page 19 of the zine reading "gender queers & gender outlaws are what we & only we are, since lesbians & gays seem to think that queer means lesbian/gay (& sometimes bi) only".
4) "The terms "gender queer" and "gender trash" would appear in another set of zines two years later, the In Your Face newsletters published by Riki Anne Wilchins. It's unclear if Wilchins drew inspiration from the GenderTrash zines, or if she created these terms independently; however, she claims to have coined the term "genderqueer" and she is the one most commonly credited with creating and defining the term."
5) A quote that reads "I coined the term “genderqueer” back in the 1990s in an effort to glue together two nouns that seemed to me described an excluded and overlooked middle: those of us who were not only queer but were so because we were the kind of gender trash society couldn’t digest." Smaller text below attributes the quote to Riki Wilchins, from an advocate.com article titled "Get to Know the New Pronouns: They, Theirs, and Them"
6) A second quote that reads "It's about all of us who are genderqueer: diesel dykes and stone butches, leatherqueens and radical fairies, nelly fags, crossdressers, intersexed, transexuals, transvestites, transgendered, transgressively gendered, intersexed, and those of us whose gender expressions are so complex they haven't even been named yet." This quote is also attributed to Riki Wilchins and comes from the first edition of a gender activism newsletter called In Your Face, published in Spring 1995.
7) "Today, Genderqueer is both an umbrella term and a specific gender identity label. As an umbrella term, Genderqueer still covers a wide range of Queer experiences of gender. As the basis for a gender identity, Genderqueer can be used as a label by any person who feels that their gender is best described as Queer, or anyone who actively chooses to Queer their own gender identity and/or expression."
8) "Genderqueer is used by some individuals to describe having a gender identity outside of the male/female binary. However, it is also possible to have a binary or binary-aligned gender and be Genderqueer. Genderqueer can be used as a stand-alone label or as one of multiple gender-related labels used by an individual."
9) This slide has text along the bottom that says "This is the Genderqueer pride flag; this version was created by Marilyn Roxie in 2011." Above that is a square image of a Genderqueer pride flag on the left side; the flag has three stripes of the same width: a lavender stripe on top, a white stripe in the center, and a chartreuse green stripe on the bottom. To the right of the flag is text which describes what each color represents. Lavender represents "queerness and androgyny", white represents "gender neutrality and genderlessness", and green represents "genders unrelated to the binary".
10) The last slide has a stock photo in the top/center of the image; in the stock photo a person stands on a staircase with beige walls and a white ceiling in the background, holding a large genderqueer pride flag up to a natural light source which isn't visible in the picture, the person wears khaki pants, but otherwise can't be seen from behind the flag. Below the stock photo is text that reads "Genderqueerness is radically inclusive, deeply personal, fiercely political, and beautiful." After the sentence is the outline of a black heart emoji.)

Hooooo boy. Caught one of those “because some victims of transphobic murder are trans women of color, trans men aren’t allowed to complain about anything because men are violent.”
I just have no words. So have these stats from Advocate.com.
Tumblr media
Also, stop weaponizing the tragic deaths of people of color to defend your disgusting attitudes. That’s more fucked up than the transphobia itself.
