Calling all Prinxiety Shippers, this analysis is for you!💜❤️

So, I have had my eyes set on Virgil's Spotify Playlist for a while now. And a few songs have caught my attention that I'd like to talk about.

The one in particular that I will discuss here is "Sally's Song" covered by Amy Lee from Evanescence, originally by Catherine O-Hara. A classic song from the even more classic movie The Nightmare before Christmas. Now, it's understandable why Virgil would have this song on there. It's from one of his favorite movies, it's a designated emo staple with lines like "We can live like Jack and Sally if we want" in Blink-182's "I Miss You", and overall it's Tim Burton which he's shown interest in as well. But, I wonder why this song in particular. He could've picked "This is Halloween" or "Jack's Lament" but..he picks "Sally's Song"? This isn't the only time he's been affiliated with this song either. In the 2020 Holiday Show, Thomas covered it in reference to Virgil's celebration of the holidays.

It's been stated that the songs on each playlist are on there for a reason. Some songs on each are directed specifically at another Side. I think I know who's being directed at here from Virgil's POV. Think about it, Sally is very similar to that of Virgil. Both are restless and want freedom despite the risks, they are both caution and concerned for others especially those they love, and just their overall aesthetics aline with a stitch work-ragdoll like appearance. The song in question is about Sally showing her concern for Jack. It briefly touches on her need for freedom and inclusion, but it's mostly about her love and consideration for Jack. Hell, she sang it right after Jack took off on his Christmas exploits that she knew would fail and tried to warn him. She thinks the love is one-sided, she gives up in believing it'll happen. However, it was reprised in the end with both of them admitting their love for each other.

Who is Jack in this situation? You could say Jack is a bit like Virgil in wanting to move away from scaring people all the time..but Jack's demeanor and personality isn't very Virgil like. He's ambitious, overly I might add. He's desperate, he's dedicated, he suffered an identity crisis, he's associated with royal standing as the Pumpkin King, and his voice is rather regal. Who does that sound like to you? Roman.

Sally's concern for Jack's actions failing or getting him hurt ties in with Virgil's behavior as anxiety. One major thing is concern for Roman being too forceful in his desperation for a boyfriend for Thomas could've got him rejected or hurt. This was shown in FWSA..the same episode where a sticker of Jack and Sally peaked both of their interest. They both have shown a love for this movie, so much so that Roman wanted Virgil's posters of it back in Accepting Anxiety part 2.

Sure, you could say that this could be directed at Nico but Virgil's playlist was debut in April of 2020, FWSA wasn't released until October. Sure, it could have been foreshadowing but I highly doubt it since the song itself shows that the person the narrator wanted in question, was already known to them and their concern for them was justified. You could say it's directed at Thomas, but this song is too romantic in its undertones to be that, even if it said "friend" in the lyrics...Roman called Virgil "Friendo" (so did Janus as Patton but that's besides the point).With lines like "What will become of my dear friend, where will his actions lead us then" could be reference to how Roman's overambitious behavior and reckless actions could be a problem. Stating a question Virgil was asked back in 2018 at live Vidcon QnA, Virgil did say he liked Roman's ambition..but wasn't sure he wanted that in his life. Maybe he's willing to take the chance now?

So, it's fair to say that "Sally's Song" is directed at Roman. They both are carbon copies of the characters, they both love the film, and the overall hints of this song and film in regards to them are too obvious to miss. ❤️💜

Seems like Virgil wants to live like Jack and Sally with Roman. 💜❤️

A Beautiful Song

Voyager was a being ('A girl', she writes) that was not one for many words.

Voyager's handwriting was beautiful: perfectly cursive, yet Vertin did not see much, as it was direct and to the point:

'May I visit?'

The 'Your room' went unsaid; many Arcanists wonder what secrets lie in the illusive Timekeeper's room but, to either amazement or disappointment, it was just that: a room. Stacked documents, here and there, a bed that was yet to be made due to Vertin's sudden bolt out of the room and into the day; and now, a new addition, albeit one Vertin thinks is temporary.

Voyager stood politely, hands clasped in their front, the galaxies upon her stockings and dress shimmering in the gentle light of the room.

Vertin nodded at her. The being from beyond the stars preferred the silence, and Vertin respected it.

Voyager smiled back, before she started to play her violin. It's a familiar song, one Vertin has heard many times. Hearing it in the middle of the night was certainly a surprise, however.

She looked up the songs found on the Voayger spacecrafts, and this one was Greensleeves, a love song from the Tudor period, or thereabouts.

People oft believe it to be related to Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. However, the composition of the original piece was one of Italian origin, that only reached England after Henry's death, which would put it around the time of either Edward VI, Mary I or, most popularly, Elizabeth I.

Nevertheless, it is still associated with Henry VIII due to its themes around the singer wishing for their love to no longer 'cast them aside discourteously'; which is ironic, in the end, due to it being Henry who cast Anne aside in favour of Jane Seymour, leaving Anne to be beheaded for her crimes of adultery, incest and, worst of all, treason against the King of England.

Which, in retrospection, now has Vertin pondering: Did Voyager choose this song for a specific reason?

Voyager played the songs found, or even beyond, the Golden Records on the Voyager I and Voyager II spacecrafts. By that logic, she might have researched it, or guessed the meaning, behind each and every song.

Love was a foreign concept to the Timekeeper. Romantic love, she should specify.

She has experienced parental love from Ms. Tooth Fairy, her treating Vertin like a child. Granted, she did that to every child in the Foundation, but Vertin always felt she was focused more on by the dentist, perhaps out of a lighthearted exasperation on the Toothfairy collector's side. Likewise, Eternity doted on Vertin, treating her as a granddaughter, or something to the effect.

She has experienced the love of both a big and a little sister. Lilya treated Vertin like a younger sibling, with the Russian ace inviting Vertin to ride on the back of her Su-01ве, the two spending free afternoons just flying around The Wilderness.

The little sister is many, one being Mondlicht. The young huntress was grateful for the help the Timekeeper had given her to help defend against the big bad wolves. Recently, the girl had taken to trying to sleep for more than a few hours, Vertin often being the one to place a blanket over the German hunter.

The love of a friend, too; the likes of Horropedia, whom Vertin had since enjoyed the company of. He's a little eccentric, at times, but that adds to his charm. The two watch horror movies together, Horropedia explaining little parts of the movie, and Vertin listening.

The love of a... partner, however...

Schneider was a whirlwind. One that, with her sister and many good friends, was swept away by The Storm. Vertin believes that, in the short time they spent together, the love between two people was there.

Vertin did not know where to place Voyager. Listening again, she could hear the lyrics inside her head:

"You could not wish for anything,

Yet you still had it readily.

Sweet music still I play and sing;

But yet you will not love me..."

Voyager's smile wavered, looking at Vertin with a strange look in her eyes. She appeared... sad.

Did her love not return the same affection...?

Voyager stopped playing, letting go of her violin slowly, it floating and still playing Greensleeves.

The traveller of space gazed at the traveller of time.

A smile danced on the former's lips, that soon gently joined with the latter's lips.

Vertin had never been to space, but was fascinated by it. Yet, she was able to tell that Voyager tasted like star dust.

Vertin had drunk tea before this, but Voyager could still taste the true taste of the Timekeeper's lips.

Voyager let go of the lips of Vertin, the smile now unwavering, eyes glittering like the stars. She had no need for air, and were it not for Vertin's human lungs, she would have continued the caress of their lips forevermore.

Vertin blinked. "Ah."

"Hehe." Voyager giggled, a melodic sound.

With another blink, Vertin then came to a late revelation: It was she who was the Lady Greensleeves.

"...But... why...?" Vertin could never see herself in a light of good, but Voyager could.

"Shh..." she hushed, placing a finger over Vertin's lips, and one over her own.

Vertin faintly heard the violin stopping and playing a new song, but she was still dazed from everything.

'I don't understand,' she thought.

'Do not, then.' a gentle voice whispered back.

'But why?' she questioned.

'Should a reason exist?' the voice questioned back.

'...Am I loved?' she asked the Void.

'Yes. By everyone. Us. Me.' the Void answered back.

Voyager was a mysterious girl of a few words. Outwardly, of course.

Internally? An inner peace of voices, just waiting its chance and moment to be heard...

And the opportunity arrived with the girl with the top hat and beautiful freckles.

Distantly, Voyager heard the chorus:

"Greensleeves was all my joy,

Greensleeves was my delight;

Greensleeves, my heart of gold:

And who but my Lady Greensleeves?"

And vividly, Vertin heard The Chorus.

'Greensleeves, you are my joy,

Greensleeves, you are my delight;

Greensleeves, with a heart of gold:

I am glad to be yours, my Lady Greensleeves.'

Music I see as another way of enjoying poetry--what else are lyrics, after all? Fiction is somewhere I can get lost and experience things I've never gotten the chance to see or meet people I'll never meet. Paintings, like photographs, capture a singular moment, but also infuse their meaning with a more personal flavor from the artist's own life. Statues are this concrete, physical expression of being that capture movement and emotion and strength and weakness and just the general essence of existence in a very solid, real way. plzzzz don't make me choose :)

camellia ⇢ I think i conformed a lot more to other's expectations (I know...such a cliche thing to say.. :(( lol). In other respects, I don't think i've changed all that much. I still love art and reading and running through fields and dancing in the rain and curling up with a story next to my dog just as much as I used to :)

I definitely feel that way about some books that just destroyed me emotionally--same goes for films--but I also feel like, given enough time, I'd want to return to them to get a fresh perspective. Idk, I've definitely thought about this a lot, but a lot of types of media store cherished memories for me, so in returning to the media, I'm also reopening that treasure trove of my own life.

ivy ⇢ I smile a lot for no reason when I'm happy. I'm much more sarcastic when I'm down. I also tend to hold my hand up to my face when I'm anxious or annoyed. I feel like this is so much easier to determine about someone else, not yourself :)

chamomile ⇢ BOOKS. chocolate. hugs. cozy sweaters. tea. handmade gifts that are more a demonstration of love that anything else.

aloe vera ⇢ (i am aware this makes me sound a lot more lonely than i actually am lol) I would love to experience the feeling of sitting next to someone I love--platonic or romantic--and just sensing this absolute tranquility. I am always so happy every time I experience that and I'd love to have that feeling more present in my life.

nutmeg ⇢ the walls of my room are a green color that I chose when i was ten, which kinda sets the automatic aesthetic to cottagecore. Lots of plants, poetry and drawings and paintining and quotes pinned on the walls, books everywhere, a quilt i made as my bedcover, my dog (sometimes lol)

papyrus ⇢ just went and did this for the sake of experimentation. the song that came up was "king" by florence and the machine. I love all of florence's songs, but i love "king" for so many reasons. The guttural vocals really bring something out in the lyrics (which are incredible on their own). Also the production of the music video (directed by one of my favorite people of all time, Autumn de Wilde--same person who directed Emma 2020) just makes the aesthetic of the music so much more....GRAND

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

OK SO I much I am very much a "get that guy out of situations" person despite being into a lot of action-y media lol. I don't really have like a specific thing that I would put him in exactly but I always like to think about him in like a slice of life/light comedy anime like kimi ni todoke or saiki where literally nothing happens most of the time. I desperately need the stakes to be so low that they're on the ground. Like honestly his death hit me SO hard I was like. screaming crying up you know the deal. So. I put him in slice of life anime so he can just hang out. No killing no dying no nothing he's just chilling. He IS going to learn about the power of love and friendship but he is NOT going to die about it!!!

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Ok this one is kind of a cop-out for me because he already has a theme song (moonshield by The Flames) that the author already picked out for him, so my work is basically already cut out for me haha. It's really just that the lyrics are so on point for him that I don't think i could come up with anything else.

The whole thing about feeling empty, feeling like the only thing that's real is pain, but also this sort of longing to understand what it means to have happiness, to love something, even though it doesn't feel possible is just. so him.

I'd also say that the anime giving him a classical guitar theme that comes on when he appears sometimes makes me kind of associate that sound to him too!

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

It's kind of arbitrary, but I like to think that he knows how to speak spanish! I just think it'd be neat n all because of all the references to architecture and langauge n stuff.

Oh and one other thing (it's not really a head cannon more of a theory/interpertation but i just. wanted to say it) I like to think that he reincarnates after he dies in series. It's kind of vague what happens to him afterwards (even though the worldbuilding about the afterlife is uh, kind of important to the story smh), but I like to think that he does.

pt 2 to my post that i was too lazy to add an explanation for. i plan on adding more things too.

basically the first scene of season 3 is Russians using the Key to try open a gate. then in the very next scene, and throughout the entire first episode we get references that are related to time, opening doors (i’m still unsure what that means) and forgetting. which could be references to not only memorygate/birthdaygate, but also eightfifteengate, how the UD is stuck on that one specific day plus the possibility of time fuckery occuring. depends how you interpret it.

1) Mike and El make out to Never Surrender by Corey Hart.

"just a little more time is all we’re asking for" about the characters in both this and the previous seasons needing more time. the best example off the top of my head is Mike. in s1e1 he needs 20 more minutes for the campaign and this is the first appearance of a "fifteen after" which is the time Karen interrupts them. eightfifteengate exists for a reason, theres lot of 8:15 and fifteen afters in this show. and this sets off Ted’s tv not working properly, the lights flickering, Mike’s strange behavior (as if he wasnt himself huh) when Will mentions the seven, then proceeds to vanish. in s4e1 Mike is busy reading letters from El but gets interrupted as it turns out its ten after and he has to hurry. you see what i mean?

"cause just a little more time could open closing doors" again the thing with needing time and how it could open doors. i’m still on the fence about the closing/opening doors, whether its supposed to represent the gates, or something less literal like doors in your mind, maybe both. it also interests me how this scene has both El with the power to open gates to another dimension and Mike associated with needing time, being late.

Mike tries to sing along but gets interrupted, you see the pattern?

just while Hopper is watching tv, idk what he is watching, but the man is next to a car and talking about "working the lock" (again with the closing/opening doors), and saying to not look at the dogs *cough cough* demodogs *cough cough* but he ends up failing and looks at them.

Hopper then spots Mike and El making out. he gets upset and El uses her powers to close the door. Hopper runs up and insists it must be open atleast three inches and tells her to open the door.

2) Mike ends up leaving, goes to the cinema. thats where Will’s Spidey senses activate and he has flashbacks to the MF, etc. they are seeing the movie Day of the Dead, which is about a zombie apocalypse that ruined the world. they show us a scene of dr Sarah Bowman touching a calendar (again, time. and how the UD is stuck as a version of Hawkins at one point in time) then a bunch of hands bursting through the wall.

3) Jonathan and Nancy, in a hurry, because they forgot to reset clocks. so we have references to clocks which is Vecna’s thing, the characters being late and needing more time, and forgetting things.

All while Open the Door by Gentlemen Afterdark plays, tying this to that thing with opening/closing doors.

We cut to Joyce and these stupid magnets.

"love that was new to you" again, passing time. i also cant deny that somehow emotions, love, feelings, relationships could be tied to all this.

"you open up the door" in relation to the thing above, certain types of emotions could be required to either open or close the 'doors'.

Dustin’s mom tells him that he was away and everyone could have forgot, then he looks out the window, as we get "you open up the door". memories, memories, memories. they are locked away behind a closed door that you just need to find a way to open. (reminder: positive memories give strength and can be used to fight back against Vecna and MF)

5) an invention by Dustin he calls the Forever Clock. tied in to the above ^^^ with also the ref to Vecna, and possibly the existence of a time loop.

6) Dustin is showing off his inventions and we see Lucas and Max talking. earlier on he got sprayed at by Dustin. he asks if she has a new zit which upsets Max and she places him under the running water, specifically his eyes that got hurt thanks to Dustin, as he screams in agony. a method Vecna uses on his victims, he fucks up their eyes, and Max that goes out of her way to hurt Lucas like this, becomes a victim of Vecna and loses her ability to see, held by Lucas as she’s dying.

this convo when Hopper comes in to talk about how he bullied politely convinced Mike into distancing himself from El is interesting imo. we literally get a Master of Puppets reference, Joyce is the one that wrote the speech for Hopper to use. the master controls the puppets, and theres a lot of this in the supernatural parts of the show. the hivemind. MF taking control of Will and using him as a puppet. Vecna’s victims too practically become puppets when in the trance.

then the question if Hopper remembered everything - memories, as i mentioned before, specifically the good ones, are what can save the puppet. Max got the strength to free herself thanks to memories and music. Will couldnt cut off all the strings but still could break free for a bit to be able to tap out the Morse code in the shed.

getting to Mike is the key. could that mean that Mike will be necessary to "open a door"? Vecna already has the gates he needed, no point in any more. this can only mean unlocking a door in your mind, maybe even to access memories.

now, whose mind would it be? why, of all people, would Mike be the one doing this? and how?

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

finley finds it hard to deal with every emotion. he IS emotionally mature, as in he does know how he feels and doesn't make others pay for the way he feels, but it's difficult for him to deal with having any kind of emotion because he gets such physical reactions to them? frustration makes him nauseous, fear makes his legs weak, happiness makes his throat tighten uncomfortably, etc etc. he's just such a physical man in his reactions—and represses so many of them—that it's hard to deal with any emotion at all without being a little weird about it.

💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep?

he's always had some trouble falling asleep, even as a kid, and especially now that he's in night city with all these noises that he's still not entirely used to. what helps him fall asleep is surprisingly to drink some chamomile tea and listen to movie soundtracks!! it keeps his mind off everything else, at least for a few hours.

🍰 CAKE SLICE - favourite cake flavour? are they specific about types of cakes?

i'm sorry to tell you this but this man does not like cake. he can make an exception for banana bread but that is IT. he doesn't like the texture and, esp with store bought cakes, HATES the icing. i don't think anyone hates icing more than he does in all the nusa.

🌋 VOLCANO - how bad is their temper? is it a slow boil, or a instant explosion?

before the heist, finley's temper is closer to a constant simmer. he's not an explosive guy and, as i said before, he represses many of his reactions to the emotions he feels, so he usually manages to calmly tell whoever's getting on his nerves to knock it off (through gritted teeth most of the time, but still).

after the heist, though, he's a lot more explosive. it doesn't take much to piss him off because he's just got so much going on and it's all a little too much, so he doesn't give as much of a thought about others' feelings before he tells them to shut the hell up or, in some cases, punches them right in the teeth. still, he tries his best to control that temper of his.

🌏 EARTH - will they give up the world for someone they love? is this decision easy for them?

in a heartbeat. finley is so full of love that it hurts me physically to think about it, he loves his friends and family so so much and would burn down the entire planet for their sake. there is literally nothing he wouldn't do for them. maybe he'd feel a little bad about it. maybe he'd feel REALLY bad about it. but, to him, they come first, and the rest of the world comes after.

📸 CAMERA - do they enjoy having their picture taken? what's their go-to pose? do they like taking photos? what do they take photos of?

does not care about having his picture taken, but it rarely happens because his go-to pose is literally a kubrick stare. he makes even the silliest picture look like jack nicholson just showed up.

he doesn't take many pictures, but the ones he does take, he prints out and keeps either in his apartment, in his car or in his vest. he takes pictures of the people he loves, but also of things that remind him of them. whenever he sees a cool car, he takes a picture because that's the kind of thing he'd have shown jackie in the past.

you can try to pry a relationship out of finley's cold dead hands. even if there's nothing left to fix, even if it's toxic, even if it kills him to hold on, he never lets go, at least not willingly. relationships are incredibly important to finley and, as hard as it is to actually get close to him in any way, once you're there, he'll do anything to make you want to stay.

☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon

he can sew really well!! he had to learn pretty early to do that while living on the road, but it's now something he does to relax in his free time. he's still really bad at creating designs, but he makes ugly little plushies that he displays in his apartment or gifts to his friends (the aldecaldos have one that serves as a mascot. it's supposed to be a dog. it does not look like one.)

I literally can't listen to Unchained Melody without fucking sobbing

this won't help because it's a you-had-to-be-there kind of story, and possibly you also have to know my dad, but imma tell it anyway - one time when i was a kid, and visiting him in the summer, the righteous brothers version of that song came on the radio in his truck. and i had just seen the movie ghost for the first time (which my mom regretted because she felt i was too young for it, but it was one of her good friend's favorite movie), and it had low-key freaked me out. not patrick swayze or demi moore or whoopi of course, but the malevolent spirits that, like, tear ghosts away? (i've seen it since, but it's been a loooong time.) anyway, i associated the song with the movie, so i asked him to turn the station. or maybe i had a tape with me, i subjected him to my music however i could haha. we were going to the grocery store. we shop, we get out to the parking lot, and he's going to take the groceries out of the cart, and he acts like he's going to ask me to do something, and instead launches into this very loud, very dramatic rendition of unchained melody. in the parking lot. my dad is a boisterous, gregarious (and can be confrontational) person (and my mom is a great people person, how they got a painfully shy introvert as a daughter is anyone's guess), and he loves to sing. at a volume. he's filled in for the cantor at shul. he never quite understood my stage fright with my own singing, and tbh a big dose of that fearlessness really would've helped me. but imagine being, idk, at most ten years old, and your dad is like, "ohhhhhhhh myyyyyy LOOOOVE MY DAAARLIN' i've hungered for your TOUUUCH a long, lonely tiiiime. TIIIIIIIME GOOOOOES BY so sloooowwwly and time can do so much, are you STILL *MIIIIIIIINE*?" deranged behavior. but i was basically crylaughing. and i'm like, what on earth, why would you do it that way? and he's like, it was good enough for the king 🤷🏻‍♂️

years pass and i somewhat forget about this, and didn't know the reference (i got the elvis part, but not the specific moment), and at some point as a young teenager, for who knows what reason, i run across the performance from june 26, 1977. as previously mentioned, i was an elvis dabbler growing up as far as the hits go, but didn't know a lot of specifics. his presence was always there in a diaphonous way. so this is...somewhere on the internet in low quality (not youtube! i looked it up, it didn't exist yet? maybe it was a fansite, this would've been around the time a little less conversation was remixed and having a moment), in the middle of the afternoon at my desk in my room after school. i can still picture that room, my chair, the bookshelf. (funny how certain moments are like that - music tends to cement things in my mind more than anything else. there's this lyric from a song called "this is one of those moments" in yentl - i will always remember this chair, that window, the way the light streamed in...). there's no real reason for me to have recall of this, but i do. in the intervening years, unchained melody had remained this hilarious, somewhat embarrassing, image of my father. and this video just...almost hurts too much to look at, it's so heart-shattering. it just had me in tears. and i thought...this isn't something i can delve into right now, and i put it away, as if it went into a box on a shelf in the attic of my head. and he sort of resided there. waiting for the day when it was time to take him down and understand. suffice to say, obviously, he's not waiting up there anymore. he's in the heart chamber now.

it's such a tremendous and yet tremulous performance, it's almost like something in him so incandescent had to blaze forth, had to give that, had to prove it, had to exude the full beauty of his voice, had to be able to smile at that audience in spite of everything. it's very near...how to phrase this? transforming it into a sacred song, it's like he made it gospel. because he had to.

the conclusion here being, yes, same. it breaks me. but the little girl in my memory can still also hear my dad and the giggling, and i don't actually think elvis would mind that part. i think it might make him smile in that same way. so maybe we can hold close to a bit of both. god speed your love to me.

i would think that aurore has never had any trouble falling asleep due to the curse. it hasn't yet taken effect, but it still lingers in her, waiting until the right time. there are trace influences of it that worry her parents; this is one such example.

she doesn't need anything, really, to help her fall asleep. that being said, she enjoys and is comforted by her thick heavy blankets and sheer bed canopy. it makes her feel protected and safe.

aurore mostly enjoys either light whimsical songs or bright pop songs.

her playlist, ironically, has some disney songs, especially i see the light, for the first time in forever, and love is an open door. there's also indila's mini world album in her playlist. her favourite artists include cosmo sheldrake, the oh hellos, taylor swift, abba, and louane — i'd love to put more french artists but i don't know a lot 😥

a song that i associate with her is once upon a dream, which should surprise absolutely no one. it's where i got this entire series idea, the soulmate trope for aurore and pippa, and it's a sleeping beauty song. there are two versions specifically that i listen to: lana del rey's cover and tchaikovsky's original sleeping beauty orchestra piece.

i feel like pippa's favourite artists are hozier, brandi carlile, maren morris, and zaz. they love anything with a beautiful voice and lyrics — a homage to how prince phillip was immediately drawn by aurora's voice in the disney movie. their music taste is also in more grounded? songs than aurore likes? i.e. cosmo sheldrake's music is quite whimsical and aurore loves it but pippa prefers hozier's solid style. if that makes sense.

a song i associate with her is i saw you in a dream by the japanese house — the version with the lowercase title — because i added it to my wip playlist immediately after hearing it for the first time. so i've always associated it with her, even if it doesn't completely match up anymore.

EDIT lol i forgot she canonically has a favourite song: woodland dance by radomir kafka. i wouldn't try to find it though; kafka is from one of vallera's neighboring countries and the song doesn't actually exist. though i imagine it with similar vibes to danse macabre or antonín dvořák's no. 2 dumka.

I've been listening to Scarlet Sky a lot lately and I thought it would be fun to do a little analysis of the song for my own enjoyment and ended up posting a thread about my interpretation of the lyrics and how they reflect Dazai and Oda's story on Twitter but then thought I would share it here as well:

A good starting point is taking note of two simple facts, one being that Scarlet Sky is a goodbye song, and the other one being that it plays during the dark era episodes of the Bungou Stray Dogs anime adaptation in Bar Lupin as well as during the scene in which Dazai tries and fails to stop Oda from going to kill Gide. Additionally, in the Beast light novel, it’s mentioned that a “heart-breaking farewell song” plays in the bar during the scene of Dazai’s goodbye that takes place there. (I have not yet seen the movie adaptation of Beast which is why I’m only mentioning the light novel version). With all of that context, it’s quite clear that it’s a very meaningful song for them and the lyrics reflect the conclusion to their story, so I’ll be analyzing them with that in mind - that this song is supposed to be about them.

The song begins to play during Dazai and Oda’s conversation where Oda makes it clear that he’s made up his mind about going after Gide and is determined to go through with it even though he’s well aware that he’s marching to his death. The first lines of the lyrics are incredibly fitting in that moment, talking about exactly that, mentioning how he has no doubts anymore and is now ready for the titular ‘scarlet sky’ - which is an important phrase repeated multiple times throughout the song. Scarlet, being a shade of red, is of course the color of blood but also interestingly enough, when it comes to religious symbolism, specifically symbolizes the blood of Christ and martyrs and is associated with devotion and sacrifice. That symbolism fits into the situation very well: firstly, Oda is choosing the path that will end in bloodshed, and secondly, he’s sacrificing his dream and the life he wanted to have in the future out of his devotion to the orphans he saved and was taking care of. What more, Oda plays the role of a savior in several ways in the story. It’s what Gide sees him as, as the only person who can free him and his men from sin and his death ends up being the direct cause of Dazai leaving the mafia and living in the light - Oda’s death quite literally saves Dazai from his sins and gives him a reason to live on, Oda being Dazai’s salvation at the cost of his own life and the suffering he had to experience first.

The song also puts an emphasis on how Oda lived his life. Lines such as And all those hugs I gave in that sweet sunlight, that’s how I made it through and Survived because my love that made me who I am point to that love being the most important value and what made Oda’s life meaningful. And he certainly was a person with a lot of love - for the orphans, for his friends - and showed people incredible kindness. That’s also the same value that he’s passing onto Dazai in his last moments, urging him to be on the side that saves people. To be someone who protects the weak. Now I’ll be the light for you and indeed, he is. He’s the guiding light that guided Dazai to a life in which he can help others. Years later, Dazai still remembers him and his words and is visibly affected by them. And he tries to fulfill his wish. He joins the ADA, he’s a far better and kinder mentor to Atsushi than he ever was to Akutagawa during his time in the mafia. Oda’s love lives on through him that way.

Dazai himself also lives on thanks to Oda, just like the lyrics of Scarlet Sky urge him to, telling him not to chase him and to let him go alone, as well as reminding him that Oda is still watching over him through lines such as Can you see me up above? and Don’t forget that my Heaven stands above my beautiful days. And so his last wish matters and Dazai needs to go on. The mention of heaven also brings attention once again to Oda playing the role of a savior and representing Good in Dazai’s story. Dazai certainly doesn’t see himself as a good man and if he believed in heaven’s existence, it’s doubtful he’d believe he’d get to go there, but he certainly believes in Oda being a good person and so becoming a good person as well is something he needs to do to be reunited with him in the end. And what gives him the strength to try is the belief of his friend in him. Won’t forget that my Heaven touched upon my love - once again, it was Oda’s good that in the end saved Dazai, and helped him see through his wish to find the right words to say to his friend to give him a reason to stay alive.

Module 8 Assignment: Your Musical Theme

I chose the theme “dreams” because I find that I really enjoy songs with a deeper meaning, and dreams are about as deep as they can get because they occur at your most vulnerable, relaxed, and purest state, while you are asleep. I am almost always listening to music, and some of my favorite songs have lyrics about dreams.

I chose the classical song “Après un Rêve” because it is a beautiful French song I heard once when I was at a restaurant, and I remember being so thankful for the Shazam app because I turned on the app on my phone and found out about this song within seconds. I really enjoy the French language, and although I do not understand the lyrics, reading through the translations made me realize how much I am missing out. It is a beautiful song about living though a beautiful and fulfilling love, only to be disappointed when waking up and realizing it was all just a dream.

I chose this jazz song by Louis Armstrong because my mom is a very big fan of his music, and I associate his music with waking up in the morning to the smell of breakfast while his music is playing in the kitchen as my mom makes a loving and comforting meal. Not only is the song about dreams, but it has always woken me up from my own dreams to the smell of pancakes in the morning.

I chose Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift because I could not complete a musical assignment without including her. I absolutely love her music, and this specific song fits the theme perfectly because it is about yearning for something with someone who seems so far away. Being together cannot be fathomed, even in their wildest dreams.

I chose If I Can Dream for the rock genre because Elvis Presley is truly a legend in this genre, and it seems only fitting that he is in the playlist. I watched the Elvis biopic starring Austin Butler a few months ago, and it really got me interested in Elvis’ life. and this song was sung really nicely in the film. I am not a rock person at all, but this song is definitely not a skip for me.

I chose Lucid Dreams by Juice WRLD because I had an obsession with this song back in middle school, even though the lyrics were very depressing for a bubbly little 12-year-old. The lyrics talk about how he has lucid dreams where he can’t feel a thing and wishes he were dead.

I chose this country song because it is a truly beautiful song that uses metaphors to talk about how he dreams of a life in which his past life was within reach again and he could feel the happiness he felt back then.

Finally, I chose Lana Del Rey’s cover of Once Upon a Dream because Sleeping Beauty was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up, and Lana is one of my favorite artists, so it was a perfect combination. She sang this song beautifully; the lyrics are just the icing on the cake. The lyrics talk about how Aurora felt as though she was in a dream when she met her prince charming, and although the dream seemed far away and unattainable, it was all possible in the end.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness -- its an amazing book AND movie! but like, it hit me so close to home after my mom's passing (it deals heavily with a mother passing because of illness) and it was such an amazing cathartic cry for me, but i could not do it again

Kit is one of the only Evan characters I can see having a healthy enough relationship for this song, and that hurts

Pre-Death Kyle gives me very much high school sweetheart vibes

Like this is the golden retriever boy who would’ve given his girlfriend the pin off his letterman jacket

The song also kind of gives me foreshadowing feelings when it says “one boy to be with forever and ever,”

Like, you loved Kyle. You made him a promise to be there forever

But will you be able to keep that promise after his Frankenstein-style resurrection? Is he really still the same person, or has he changed enough that he isn’t the same Kyle he was before?

Relationships with JPM are usually portrayed as extremely balanced and loving with both parters holding pretty equal standing or extremely dark and controlling with James holding full control in the relationship.

It’s A Dangerous Game is that filthy, controlling roll-in-the-sheets song you just need sometimes

It’s also delving into the literal danger

Like, Mr. March is the most prolific serial killer ever. He’s a massive sadist. Being near him while also being alive is a massive risk.

But it’s a sexy risk

Take Me As I Am is the complete opposite vibe while still talking about the exact same dude. 

It’s still a duet, but this one is even, measured, romantic... and all about accepting a criminally insane fiance for all his peculiarities! Perfect!

This is the song where JPM talks about how much he loves his wife lol

Because he might be a psycho, but he absolutely respects and cherishes his wife

This is another holdover from my Aaron Tveit phase because Grease Live was a masterpiece (it was very difficult to not include more songs he performed, because Evan gives me Aaron vibes) 

I picked this song less because of the actual content, and more because of the vibe

Like, imagine Peter Maximoff learning all the choreography from the movie in his spare time
