I will never forget how my grandparents, when asked by me for more Lord of the Rings books for my birthday, managed to gift me one of the only two books by Tolkien that aren't actually about Middle Earth. The second one being Tolkien's collected letters. And they gave my sister "The little Hobbit", a shortened version of the Hobbit (which i find incredibly nonsensical to even exist in the first place since the book is a children's book already and not actually that long, so of course they had to buy it). Truly a unique talent for giving the worst gifts imaginable, one that is really shining here.

task force 141 + christmas day
Tumblr media
Characters: Simon "Ghost" Riley, John "Soap" MacTavish, Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, John Price, Alejandro Vargas, Rodolfo "Rudy" Parra
Warnings: none
A/N: oh lordy i can't believe it's christmas already. keep sending me requests so i have stuff for january por favor. merry happy to all u guys
Tumblr media
alright so the big day has finally arrived
christmas
it's been snowing for the last week and the trend continued today which means rudy is ecstatic because it's always been his dream to have a white christmas
he's also one of the first people to wake up and he has to fight the urge to run around and wake everyone else up
another person of the first people to wake up list is soap and unlike rudy soap does not fight the urge
he goes throughout the base blasting christmas music (mariah carey ofc) and shaking everyone out of their beds
ghost's been up for a while (as expected) and is already waiting in the kitchen with a cup of tea as everyone else piles in
pretty much everyone is in pajamas or sweatpants
rudy and soap are wearing their favorite ugly christmas sweaters tho
and as price starts up a pot of coffee the gift opening ensues
they all let rudy start out because he's literally trembling with excitement
of course everyone chipped in to get rudy his dream lego set this year
the ferrari daytona sp3
but in addition to that ghost somehow managed to get rudy a mint condition, never opened, ferrari f1 racer set
and for those of y'all who aren't familiar with legos (pretty much the entire team except rudy) this is a huge deal because the set has been retired
rudy was so excited he couldn't stop himself from running up to ghost and giving him a massive hug
ghost awkwardly let him but mainly because rudy looked so happy he couldn't say no
and yes rudy spent the rest of the day raving about how cool the set ghost got him was
the next person to open up their gifts was price
and apparently all his coy hinting worked because he got what he wished for, a heated weighted blanket
unfortunately (or maybe fortunately idk u decide) his hinting worked a little too well because gaz, soap, and rudy all got him one
so now he has three
in addition to that alejandro got him a super nice bottle of macallan whiskey
and ghost got him a really expensive set of cigars
after price went gaz
soap felt so bad for sitting on and breaking gaz's speaker that of course he had to buy him a new one
it's bluetooth of course and very nice
that being said the gift is technically from soap and price because the speaker was pretty expensive (but really good quality)
alejandro and rudy both chipped in and got gaz a really nice pair of noise cancelling headphones so that he wouldn't have to deal with the task force's nonsense anymore
and gaz had recently mentioned how he had gotten back into listening to the weeknd
and ofc ghost bought him two vip tickets to the weeknd's after hours til dawn tour
gaz literally freaked out when he saw the tickets like im talking jumped up out of his seat jaw dropped wide open
ghost let's gaz give him an awkward hug too because he doesn't want to kill his mood
and then it's alejandro's turn to open his gift
and low and behold what does he see when he opens up the wrapping paper
of course it's his dream gift and like the one thing he wished for
a brand new ps5
everyone on the team chipped in to pay for it
and they got him a few games too
then next it was ghost's turn
he wasn't expecting much and he was pretty surprised when he opened his gift
he got all the books he wanted of course, plus a few extra
soap got him the metamorphosis by franz kafka
gaz got him the picture of dorian gray by oscar wilde
alejandro got him journey to the center of the earth by jules verne
rudy got him the count of monte cristo by alexandre dumas
and then somehow, price managed to score a signed, first edition version of treasure island by robert louis stevenson
ghost was literally speechless for the first time in his life when he realized what he was holding
like his hands were literally shaking and he had to put it down because he was scared he would ruin it
he tried to interrogate price and find out where he had got it from but price wouldn't say anything
and then last but not least was soap
he was getting kinda nervous as everyone opened up their gifts because it didn't look like there was gonna be any for him
and the ghost opened up the last box and soap's heart pretty much broke
but before the sadness could fester too long everyone dragged him to the garage
and low and freaking behold what does soap see
but his dream gift, the yz250 sitting in front of him with a bow on top
and soap freaked out he was literally bouncing off the walls in shock
it turned out ghost knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy
and so he was able to get the bike at an insane discount
and with everyone chipping in, they were able to get him a helmet/gear as well
and again soap was literally freaking out
he tried to hug ghost, who declined at first but then gave in
after gift opening was over they all went to have lunch and the kinda split off to do their own things
simon "ghost" riley:
alright so the first thing ghost does is take his first edition treasure island and sprint to his room
like i cannot emphasize to you enough how insane of a deal this is
because not only is a first edition copy valued at literally ~$10,000, treasure island has an insane amount of sentimental value to ghost because that was his favorite book as a child
that being said ghost was literally terrified to touch the book
like he put on his gloves and anything
the book was in really good condition and even the signature looked like it was in mint condition
i mean again ghost was just in awe completely shocked
he ended up tucking it away in his safe because he was too scared to read it
he ended up brewing himself a cup of tea and reading the count of monte cristo to relax
and if you're there with him than congrats u get to see a new side of ghost, nerd!ghost
because he will not stop raving about the first edition treasure island
he'll also give you your gifts in private
and they're everything you ever wished for
including something you didn't even remember wishing for until you saw it
and then he's more than happy to spend the rest of the day hanging out with you while he reads
at least until price calls everyone to the dining room for christmas dinner and soap starts drinking
john "soap" mactavish:
alright after seeing his gift soap has one thing on his mind and that's riding the dirt bike
unfortunately the weather outside is not the most friendly to dirt bikers
but what soap wants soap does
and so (very unwisely i might add) soap decides to try riding his bike indoors
he takes it to the hangar because it's got a lot more space but just because he has the extra space doesn't mean he's successful
it's been a long time since he last rode a dirt bike and so he almost immediately nearly ran into one of the planes
and then you and price practically forced him to stop so he wouldn't immediately destroy his bike
he was disappointed for a bit but you made it better
he gave you his gift and it was the best, most soap-centric gift you could ask for
it was absolutely perfect and it referenced one of your many inside jokes
he also let you pick one of the soap's everyone put in his stocking
you picked a fancy bath and body works one
then he spent the rest of the day hanging out with you and the others until dinner time
and you know that afterwards he's getting stupid drunk again
kyle "gaz" garrick:
alright so honestly gaz was freaking out about the weeknd tickets a lot
like it took him a good while to finally relax
and of course the other ticket is going to you so you can join him
he also pretty much immediately put on the noise cancelling headphones alejandro and rudy got him
and you just know he was listening to the weeknd's entire discography
he also pulled you aside so he could give you your gift in private
he got you some new clothes you've been wanting for a while
as well as some jewelry with your initials engraved in it
he was kind of nervous it was too much but you assured him it was perfect
he spent the rest of the day listening to music and dancing with you
as well as hanging out with the others until dinner came
and during the after dinner party gaz's speaker was the prime music source
john price:
alright so price is just ready to milk his gifts as much as possible
but before he does he knows he has to give you your gift first
it's something really sweet and heartfelt and you can tell how much he loves you through the gift
and he also got you your own bucket hat with your initials embroidered on the inside
he says you look like the most beautiful girl in the world with it on
then he drags you to his room where you milk his presents with him
he pours you a glass of the fancy whiskey while he lights one of ghost's cigars
if you smoke too he'll offer you one as well
and then he'll have you cozy up to him under one out of the three weighted heated blankets
and the two of you will just cuddle there until dinner
alejandro vargas:
alright so the first thing alejandro does after everyone's done opening gifts is hook up his PS5 to the tv
he's super excited to play some games and he brings you over to play with him
before you start though he gives you your gift
it's something you've been wanting for a while
plus an all expenses paid for spa trip at a really nice spa
then he pulls you against him and has you pick a game to play
and the two of you will play that until dinner comes
and then he might still keep playing after dinner, although this time he'll be much worse because you don't get to go through a soap party without drinking at least a smidge of alcohol
rodolfo "rudy" parra:
alright so rudy is just super duper hyped about his legos man idk what to say
his first thought is to immediately start building one of them but he has enough reason to give you your gift first
one of them is an expensive set of shoes you've been eyeing for a long time
another is a lego set of your own (because he wants to build legos with you but he also gets super defensive if you try to build his so he needs it to be seperate)
and then a super duper heartfelt homemade gift
he's really really nervous about it and his heart just about bursts when you wrap your arms around him and tell him it's perfect
and then the two of you spend a pretty long amount of time building legos
honestly you finished pretty quickly but you stuck around to watch him finish his
you also helped massage his back/shoulders whenever they would hurt from being hunched over for too long
and lord knows rudy would sing your praises so loudly for doing that
he's done by dinner and during soap's little party rudy is more than happy to be all over you
and it's easily the best christmas he's had so far

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Adapted from novel by alexandre dumas
Tumblr media
So, what if I told you the most faithful adaption of the Count of Monte Cristo ever done was an anime that set it in space but kept all the same character beats and plot points, whilst bringing a distinct surrealist visual style that seems like animated cut paper collage and also the "Count" now is a blue skinned vampire? It's all the revenge tragedy, frenchiness, and generational drama you could ever want and it is fucking perfect. If you haven't seen Gankutsuou before and loved the book (and maybe thought it could do with a sad mecha duel)? Please give it a watch.

Hermit Prints — Aim For The Heart
This project was for the anthology Aim For The Heart by @duckprintspress
You’ve heard “All For One!”; now get ready for “One For All!” Duck Prints Press is thrilled to bring a whole new meaning to the Musketeers’ famous slogan in one inclusive book with a little bit of something for everyone: Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers.” For this collection, we recruited 20 authors and 16 artists who love Athos, Porthos, Aramis, d’Artagnan, Milady, Madame Bonacieux, and the whole gang from Dumas’s wonderful historical melodrama. These creators’ mission was simple: take this long-adored story and make it queer! The result is an amazing collection of works exploring the nuances of these characters, delving into issues of identity, gender, and sexuality—telling and retelling a story we all know and love.
This is in the A4 format, with white paper and matte cover options. The final books had 254 pages. The cover art is by Pallas Perilous.

Meet Aether Beyond the Binary Contributors Sebastian Marie, Lyonel Loy, and Elior Haley!
As we enter the last few days of the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for Aether Beyond the Binary, we’re introducing the last few of our authors. Today, meet Sebastian Marie, Lyonel Loy, and Elior Haley! We’re really excited to be featuring these three authors contributing to this fantastic collection of 17 stories set in modern aetherpunk settings where the technology runs on magic, all starring characters outside the gender binary.
Tumblr media
Un Charco, Un Lago by Sebastian Marie
About Sebastian: Sebastian Marie (he/him) is an engineering student with a lot of opinions about dragons, pirates, and sword fighting. Track him down on Ao3 or Tumblr and he’ll share these opinions gladly, just be prepared for music and some excited shouting. His original works often combine fantasy and dystopia into what he calls “queer fantasy hopepunk,” something that will be explored in his future novels. He loves to write conflicting traditional and non-traditional family dynamics, especially where they intersect with queer relationships. And if he can throw werewolves and brujas into the mix? So much the better. When not writing, frantically studying, or reading, he can be found singing loudly, sewing impractical coats, and going on long rambling walks while plotting stories (and occasionally falling into rivers).
Also, he’s also the guitarist and one of the lyricists of folk punk band Here Be Dragons, who hope to have their debut EP out near the end of Fall, 2023.
This is his third time writing for Duck Prints Press, having previously contributed to Aim For the Heart and She Wears the Midnight Crown. This brings his grand total of published works up to three! He’s looking forward to more, as soon as he gets some sleep.
Links: Archive of Our Own | Tumblr
This is Sebastian’s third contribution to a Duck Prints Press anthology. His first contribution was in the masquerade-themed anthology She Wears the Midnight Crown, and his second in Aim For The Heart: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s “The Three Musketeers” – which, mostly coincidentally, has been released on our website TODAY!
Title: Un Charco, Un Lago
Excerpt:
The person who answers the door to the townhouse is short, brown, and incredibly tired looking. Victorie sees this look a lot in her line of work; plumbing disasters really take a lot out of people. He adjusts the strap of his work bag on his shoulder and begins his spiel.
“Hello, Hola, English or Español?”
“Ingles,” the person responds before yawing. “but either is good.” They scratch at their shoulder, which is covered in paint-splattered overalls and a worn blue polo shirt.
“All right. My name is Technician Victorie, public works wizard at your service.” Victorie points to her name tag that helpfully states “he/him” and “she/her” under his name. “And you must be Lago Cabrera? Elle/le or they/them?” Victorie reads off her paper.
“Yes.”
“Do I have your permission to inspect the problem, a…” Victorie consults the paper.
“The sink is throwing up.” Lago says bluntly.

We Might Contain Multitudes by Lyonel Loy
About Lyonel: Lifelong maladaptive daydreamer, finally working up the courage to write those daydreams down. Spends time cosplaying as a Responsible Adult With A Job.
This is Lyonel’s first time writing with Duck Prints Press.
Title: We Might Contain Multitudes
Excerpt:
There are master crafters in the sleepy hills of New England, waiting amongst the silent ward stones.
The first has eyes like a spider’s, arrayed out neatly in rows, and the spider eyes sparkle in a riot of colors that Kwok’s human eyes should not have been able to see.
The next has no mouth yet whispers ceaseless, an uninterrupted flow of half recognizable words in a myriad of voices and a myriad of tongues like a mountain stream in heavy rain, swirling over and around itself like dancing water.
The last is Guo, whose name is not truly Guo. Guo, who could be any ordinary young man on the streets of Ipoh or Singapore or Seoul except for their eternal eyes, and yet it is they who scare Kwok most of all.

Epiphanies of Friendship, and Other White Whales by Elior Haley
About Elior: Elior has spent much of the past few years primarily writing for fanfic exchanges. Currently, he’s in the process of slowly working his way through university. When not writing or studying, he can be found binding books, drawing, ice skating, and—very occasionally—playing the violin. His story in Aether Beyond the Binary is his first published work.
This is Elior’s first time writing with Duck Prints Press.
Title: Epiphanies of Friendship, and Other White Whales
Excerpt:
There was no such thing as night and day, deep in aetherspace, but it was during Raisel’s resting time that the song woke her from sleep, deep and low and rolling in her bones.  She felt it more than she heard it, its vibrations layering on top of the omnipresent hum of the gravity generator and engines.  At once she sat up in her narrow bunk, heart beating jackrabbit-quick; she tried to calm her shaking limbs for a moment before realizing that the tremors were from the song.
It was like nothing she had heard before.  No words she knew felt adequate to describe it; it was both beautiful and eerie, and somewhere between her bones and her soul she felt something call to her.
Halfway down the corridor, still in her sleeping clothes, Charlie caught her elbow.
“Where are you going?” they asked.
With less than 5 days left in our campaign, we are 83% funded. Time is running out to back the Kickstarter to buy your copy of Aether Beyond the Binary and help us raise the funds we need to bring this anthology into print! Become a backer TODAY!

before I forget again, here is a movie concept I pitched to @fremedon the last time we hung out:
Biopic of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, with — this is important — a frame story in which his son is pitching a manuscript he has written to various publishers and theater producers. Depending on who he is trying to sell the story to, the tone and style of the biopic sections varies wildly, with everything from strict historical accuracy to melodrama to farce.
This builds to the very end, when Dumas has wrapped up telling the story to one last set of theatrical producers. They love it! They want to put his father’s life story on stage! They… want to cast a white actor.
Dumas sighs, gathers his papers, and bids them good day.

1, 2, 3, 10 reading asks
book i absolutely hate? i put down books i can see i won't like pretty quickly so i don't really have a rant locked and loaded for this one. i can go on and on about whole genres as a whole though because i can tell they're just not worth the paper they're printed on. the shelves and shelves of mediocre fifth-grade level fiction being marketed to grown ass adults. everything by joel osteen. [vomits] romance novels
book that first got me interested in reading? i've been reading ever since i can remember but the first 'real' book i can recall reading is the count of monte cristo by alexandre dumas, truly fantastic classic (i'm currently in a reread with the improvised book club right now actually!) i was also a redwall kid growing up of course, and also enjoyed the deptford histories by robin jarvis and gregor the overlander by suzanne collins. lots of anthropomorphic animals killing eachother in gruesome ways for some reason. i will forever be smug about reading suzanne collins before the hunger games got big though and tbh gregor was much better
did i actually read all the books required in school/did i start out that way? i was homeschooled so required reading was mostly public library summer reading programs, but yeah i've mostly always been like that. they couldn't stop me really
tell you about my top (any number i want) favorite books? opening a can of worms here, don't say i didn't warn you. it's no secret i'm a sci-fi guy so top of my list is always blindsight and echopraxia by peter watts. that shit changed me for real. wyrms by orson scott card is another one that, though fiction, contains a lot of very interesting thoughts. (standard 'card is a weird dude' disclaimer here.) i recently read jorge luis borges' short fiction, some very well done and intriguing concepts there. philip k. dick is a long time favorite of mine, the martian time-slip is particularly good as well as his dozens of short stories. and finally i will not shut up about gödel escher bach, i'm still wading through it but it's fantastically written, a lot of fun to read and i can already tell it's going to leave a mark

Roald Dahl’s Matilda Reading List:
A full master-list of literature between film and novel of every book Matilda enjoy’s reading. I will be separating these into two-sections. Books I own and don’t own.
I am making this list for two reasons. One: for my own future book shopping reference. Two: for anyone else who would like the same.
Books I own:
Babbit -Sinclair Lewis //
Moby Dick -Herman Melville //
The Wind & The Willows -Ernest Shepherd //
Animal Farm -George Orwell //
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer -Mark Twain //
The Three Musketeers -Alexandre Dumas //
Ivanhoe -Walter Scott //
Lorna Doone -R.D Blamore //
The Secret Garden -Frances H. Burnett //
The Grapes of Wrath -John Steinbeck //
Shakespeare’s Sonnets //
Catcher In The Rye -J.D. Salinger //
The Invisible Man -H.G. Wells //
Tess of the D’Urbervilles -Thomas Hardy //
Jane Eyre -Charlotte Bronte //
Great Expectations, The Pickwick Papers, Nicholas Nickleby -Charles Dickens //
Pride and Prejudice -Jane Austen //
As I Lay Dying, The Sound and the Fury -William Faulkner //
The Old Man and the Sea, For Whom the Bell Tolls -Ernest Hemingway //
The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe -C.S. Lewis (I own the entire series of Narnia) //
King Arthur & The Knights Of The Round Table -Howard Pyle
Books I don’t own:
Peter Pan - J.M Barrie
The Red Pony -John Steinbeck
Just So Stories -Rudyard Kipling
Lord Jim -Joseph Conrad
The Good Companions -J.B. Priestley
Gone to Earth -Mary Webb
Kim -Rudyard Kipling
Brighton Rock -Graham Greene
From Here To Eternity -James Jones
Mary Poppins -P.L Travers
In Country Sleep -Dylan Thomas
*notes: I’ve only included literary works I could coherently make out without driving myself too crazy. In the novel, Matilda expresses that A Secret Garden is her favorite book; however, in the film it is Charles Dickens (mispronounced Darls Chickens for legal reasons) who is her first favorite adult author. Her first read adult book is Great Expectations.
Matilda is reading King Arthur when her father storms into her bedroom and begins yelling at her. This is not the only time he yells at her for reading. He also, gets into a nasty dispute over his own daughter’s age as he can’t be bothered to remember when she was born.
This leads to the events when she will meet Mrs. Honey for the first time as her father hopes to send her off to a school operated by an abusive principle.
Mrs. Honey (a teacher) also during the film tells Matilda one of her favorite author’s is Charles Dickens and at one point gifts her with a book called The Wind & The Willows in her biological parent’s home, as an act of solidarity and change that is eluded to. We learn Mrs. Honey is not only a kind person, and a book worm just like Matilda, but a survivor of abuse herself.
Matilda’s very last book read in the film is to her teacher and adoptive mother Mrs. Honey, who eventually takes over the school as the new principle. The book Matilda reads to her new parent is Moby Dick, which is also something her biological father mocked and yelled at her previously for reading.

All About: Cannabis
History
- Cannabis probably originated in China. Medical and religious use can be traced to ancient China, India, Egypt and the Middle East.
- At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon’s soldiers brought cannabis to France from Egypt in the form of hashish.
- It became very popular with French writers and artists, who established Le Club des Hachichins (The Hashish-Eaters’ Club) in Paris.
Members included Theophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Victor Hugo, Honore de Balzac, and Alexandre Dumas
- Hemp was grown in colonial America, but marijuana smoking probably came to the US with Mexican & Caribbean immigrants in the early 1900s.
- Cannabis (hemp) plant:
High THC content ---> Marijuana, recreational use
Low THC content (less than 0.3%) = industrial hemp
- In 1937, the Marijuana Tax Act instituted a national registration and taxation system aimed at discouraging all use of cannabis. It was overturned in 1969.
- Largely destroyed the hemp industry {note: this benefited paper manufacturers and thus indirectly benefited logging companies}
- United States Department of Agriculture lifted the tax on hemp cultivation during WWII
Legal Status
- In 1970, marijuana and THC became Schedule I illegal drugs.
Tumblr media
2014 Farm Bill: permits cultivation of industrial hemp for research purposes
2018 Farm Bill: made industrial hemp legal, allowed CBD oil production
Preparation
- Marijuana is produced from flowering hemp (Cannabis sativa).
- Marijuana is a mixture of dried and crumbled leaves, small stems, and flowering tops.
Tumblr media
- Hemp seeds have been used for oil and bird food.
- It can be consumed orally, as in cookies or brownies, but is usually smoked in rolled cigarettes known as “joints,” various kinds of pipes, or in hollowed-out cigars called “blunts.”
- Hashish is a cannabis derivative that can be smoked or eaten.
- It can refer to a relatively pure resin preparation with very high cannabinoid content, or a solvent extract of leaves or resin.
Tumblr media
- Hash oil is an alcohol extract. A drop is placed on a tobacco or marijuana cigarette.
Ingredients
- Hemp contains 70 unique compounds known as cannabinoids, plus more than 400 other identified compounds.
- The psychoactive compound /_\9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) accounts for the use of cannabis as a drug. {note: that’s supposed to be a triangle; sorry}
- Marijuana potency (in terms of THC content) varies widely, depending on the genetic strain of the plant and growing conditions.
- Potency can be increased by preventing pollination and seed production by the female plants. This marijuana is called sinsemilla (”without seeds”).
- THC was identified as the major active ingredient in 1964.
Tumblr media
- Burning marijuana causes the THC to vaporize and enter the smoker’s lungs in small particles.
- Effective dose and latency to onset of effects are influenced by the amount and potency of the plant used, and patterns of smoking (e.g. duration of held breath).
Administration & Absorption
Smoking
- Smoking marijuana is the quickest way to absorb THC, with blood levels peaking between 9-10 minutes into a smoke session.
- THC is easily absorbed by the lungs, and blood plasma levels rise quickly.
Edibles
- Thought to yield peak THC blood levels within 1-5 hours post-ingestion
- Poor absorption results in low and variable plasma levels, probably due to degradation in the stomach, first-pass metabolism.
Elimination
- Blood THC levels decline rapidly after smoking marijuana, but complete elimination from the body is much slower because of persistence in fat tissues.
- Half-life varies from a few hours to 3-4 days
- The gradual movement of THC metabolites back out of fat stores means that urine screening tests can detect them more than 2 weeks after a single incident of marijuana use.
Acute Behavioral Effects
- Effects of cannabinoid use vary depending on dose, frequency of use, characteristics of the user, and the setting in which use occurs.
- Subjective & behavioral effects of marijuana use can be separated into four stages: the “buzz,” the “high,” the stage of being “stoned,” and the “come-down.”
The “high” is associated with feelings of euphoria & exhilaration, and a sense of disinhibition.
Relaxation is the most commonly reported effect of being “stoned.”
- Smoking marijuana can sometimes produce transient psychotic symptoms such as depersonalization, derealization, agitation, and paranoia.
- Expectation also plays a role in what effects the drug will produce, as shown by placebo studies.
- Marijuana negatively affects cognitive functions.
Decreased performance for a variety of verbal, spatial, time estimation, and reaction time tasks has been noted.
Cannabinoids appear to interfere with all aspects of memory processing.
- Marijuana can affect psychomotor functioning under demanding task conditions, such as driving.
- Use of cannabis with or without alcohol is a risk factor in automobile accidents.
Acute Physiological Effects
- increased blood flow to the skin and flushing
- increased heart rate
- increased hunger
Chronic Behavioral Effects
- In young people amount of cannabis use is inversely related to educational performance.
- Some research supports the hypothesis that heavy cannabis use leads to persistent cognitive defects, impairing school performance.
- Alternatively, poor school performance and rejection of mainstream values (such as educational achievement) may increase cannabis use.
- Chronic cannabis use can also result in aimlessness, decreased motivation, lack of planning, and decreased productivity (amotivational syndrome).
{note: Amotivational syndrome can also be caused by SSRIs, and since there is a high rate of comorbidity between depression + anxiety, and between cannabis use + depression and/or anxiety, it can be difficult to determine whether SSRIs or cannabis are causing amotivational syndrome in patients who use both substances.}
- Heavy cannabis use over a long period may lead to impaired executive functioning for at least 2-3 weeks following cessation of use.
- Some data suggest that heavy, long-time users may continue to show impairment in decision-making, planning, and concept formation. It may negatively affect the prefrontal cortex.
- Imaging studies suggest that chronic marijuana use is associated with several kinds of abnormalities in the brain.
- Several studies have found a significant relationship between early heavy marijuana smoking and increased risk for later development of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.
Mechanisms of Action
- A cannabinoid receptor in the CNS was identified in 1988.
- Receptors occur in many brain areas.
- Localization of cannabinoid receptors in these areas is consistent with the behavioral effects of these compounds on locomotor activity, coordination, and memory.
Tumblr media
- Endogenous neurotransmitter-like substances that act on the receptors = endocannabinoids.
- Two main endocannabinoids have been found: anandamide and 2-AG.
Tumblr media
- They are retrograde messengers; they carry information in the opposite direction from normal (i.e. postsynaptic to presynaptic).
- THC similar to endocannabinoids binds to cannabinoid receptors located presynaptically on the nerve terminal. They are metabotropic: they work via G-proteins to inhibit presynaptic voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channels, and open K+ channels.
- As a result, cannabinoids decrease neurotransmitter release from the terminal.
Tumblr media
Reinforcement
- In one study, regular marijuana users could discriminate THC-containing marijuana cigarettes from placebos with no THC, and all subjects preferred the marijuana with THC when given a choice.
- Animal studies have also demonstrated reinforcing properties.
Lever pressing by squirrel monkeys for THC stopped when placebos were used.
Tumblr media
- Mechanisms for reinforcement:
Activation of the mesolimbic dopamine system: VTA --> NAcc
Interactions between the cannabinoid and opioid systems may play a role in cannabinoid reward and reinforcement; opioid agonists enhance cannabinoid self-administration, and opioid antagonists have the opposite effect.
Tolerance & Dependence
- Animals exposed to THC or other CB1 agonists develop tolerance to the behavioral and physiological effects of these compounds.
- It appears to involve a combination of desensitization and down-regulation of CB1 receptors.
Tumblr media
Adverse Health Effects
- There are no reports of death from overdose.
- Smoking marijuana can damage lungs: smoke contains tar, other carcinogens, carbon monoxide, etc.
- Possible adverse cardiac effects?
- Immune system suppression
- THC may affect reproductive functions:
In AFAB people, it can affect ovulation.
In AMAB people, regular smoking has been shown to decrease testosterone levels and sperm counts.
Animal research has demonstrated pregnancy failure, delayed embryonic development, and even fetal death with THC administration.
Smoking marijuana during pregnancy results in cognitive deficits, poor school achievement, and increased risk for tobacco and/or marijuana use later in life.
DSM-5: Cannabis Use Disorder
- Marijuana use typically begins in adolescence and peaks during young adulthood.
- If an individual has not yet tried marijuana by their mid-twenties, they are unlikely to begin at a later age.
Tumblr media
- Cannabis use varies based on demographics.
- Research shows college students and young adults most commonly use cannabis...
To socially conform (~40%)
To experiment (~30%)
For enjoyment (~20%)
To manage stress or relax (~10%)
- Risk of dependence is related to drug use patterns. People who progress to daily use have a 10-20% probability of becoming dependent.
- Dependence manifests as a difficulty in stopping one’s use, a craving for marijuana, and (in heavy users) unpleasant withdrawal symptoms:
irritability
increased anxiety
depressed mood
sleep disturbances
heightened aggression
decreased appetite
- These are similar to the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
Treatment
- Most cannabis users do not seek treatment.
- Treatment in outpatient programs involves cognitive-behavioral therapy, relapse prevention training, and/or motivational enhancement therapy, but patients are very vulnerable to relapse.
- Some research on medications to relieve withdrawal symptoms has been done.
Therapeutic Uses of Cannabinoids
- AKA “medical marijuana”
- Many states now permit legal use, but clinical studies of its efficacy have produced mixed results.
- Smoked marijuana has the highest potential for adverse health effects and abuse; most researchers favor development of cannabinoid-based drugs instead.
- Information from the National Institute of Health
- The FDA has not approved the cannabis plant for any medical use. However, the FDA has approved several drugs that contain individual cannabinoids:
Epidiolex, which contains a purified form of CBD derived from cannabis, was approved for the treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome, two rare and severe forms of epilepsy.
Marinol and Syndros, which contain dronabinol (synthetic THC) to treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. Dronabinol is also used to treat loss of appetite and weight loss in people with HIV/AIDS.
- Endocannabinoids enhance the incentive motivational properties of food and food-mediated reward.
- CB1 receptor antagonists reduce food consumption in animals and human subjects.
- In animal studies, marijuana was shown to relieve anxiety and depression.
- There’s some evidence that marijuana might reduce addiction and/or overdoses caused by other drugs.
- Pain perception: transgenic mice that lack CB1 and CB2 receptors demonstrate hyperalgesia (increased pain sensitivity).
- Clinical evidence for cannabinoids as analgesics has not been convincing.
- Nabiximols (Sativex) is a cannabis extract.
was approved in the UK in 2010 to treat pain and spasticity in multiple sclerosis patients (not yet approved in the US)
- A number of years ago, Jamaican researchers prepared eye drops from cannabis extracts (trade name Canasol) for the purpose of reducing ocular pressure in glaucoma patients.
However, the research is inconclusive and Canasol was never licensed by the FDA for legal marketing in the United States.

Get inside your character's head meme
2, 12, 22, 32, 42
Ooo all twos very nice - since you didn't specify a character I will attempt to do both Francis and Elaine for this (strap yourselves in this is gonna be a long boi)
2: Do they have any daily rituals?
Francis - oh absolutely. He has to take at least forty-five minutes (and this is the minimum) to perform his morning grooming routine - which includes showering, basic hygiene, hair and skin care. If he isn't able to at least start this process before 10am (which can be a bit tricky due to his penchant for sleeping in a lot), he gets more than a little irritable. That and his morning cafe au lait. Not anything particularly special, but having this routine is important for him in starting his day off on the right foot. Elaine - she doesn't have too many routines that she sticks to as rigidly as her husband does. While she has a morning grooming routine (she gets through it a lot quicker than Francis does, aside from how long it takes to tend to her thick mane), she'll try to go on an early morning jog at least twice a week.
12. Favorite book genre?
Francis - while of course he indulges in romance novels and classic literature from his own authors (Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, etc.) for a good round of escapism, he enjoys nonfiction works dealing with varying philosophies. Although as he's gotten older he definitely prefers fiction over nonfiction due to his world weariness and desire to escape the harsh reality of his own existence. Elaine - in terms of fiction, she enjoys the odd adventure novel. But as a rule she prefers nonfiction, particularly scientific journals and books dealing with animal husbandry or horticulture/gardening. And even though this isn't a book genre she'll absolutely go down an SCP Foundation rabbit hole - as someone with experience in dealing with the magical and supernatural, as well as a science and nature enthusiast, she's fascinated by the creatures and concepts that humans can come up with.
22: Given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?
Francis - he'd either write down whatever random thought or concept that could happen to be on his mind, and/or sketch something ranging to an outfit idea, something interesting in his surroundings, or something a bit more abstract. He's very much a stream of consciousness type of creative, and in any case it would be reflected in such a situation. Elaine - if she were outdoors, she'd revert to sketching any flora or fauna within eyeshot. However, if confined to an indoor space, she'd probably fold the paper into an airplane and toss it around. (Although there's nothing to stop her from folding up any sketch she'd make while outdoors into a paper airplane too.)
32: Thoughts on material possessions in general?
Francis - he views material possessions as a sign of status, indicating that you can support your needs comfortably while also being able to afford to indulge your sometimes more expensive wants. So don't mind him as he will very much indulge his own expensive wants. However, his wife will definitely have to rein him in from going on too big of a spending spree. Elaine - she's very much a minimalist when it comes to material possessions. She doesn't put too much stock into collecting things, apart from certain items of sentimental value. She tends to value things that have more heart put into them (e.g. something handmade or a thoughtfully selected gift).
42: How far did they get in formal education? What are their views on formal education vs. self-education?
Francis - as well as military training, he was also given instruction by the tutors of the children of his royal families while he still had the physical appearance of a child/young teenager. When he "grew up", he'd sneak into university lectures on subjects that would be of interest to him. While he does believe that formal education can be valuable, he disapproves of teachers/instructors who use their classes for activism rather than sticking to the actual subject. Elaine - while the bulk of her knowledge when she was a young nation had to do with military matters, she really only expressed interest in learning more in scientific fields when it came to academia. She's very much the "learn from experience" type and is firmly convinced she learned more from her various apprenticeships with tradesmen and scientists than she ever did from the few times she was made to sit in a lecture hall.
This took me forever, but it was fun to fill out! Everyone's welcome to send me any numbers that are left!

Quote
Colette, the French novelist, believed there are connoisseurs of blue—she would only write on blue stationery—and was very fussy about what she would accept as pure in that color. “The Creator of all things showed a certain closefistedness when distributing our share of blue flowers,” she once wrote. “Myosotis, the forget-me-not? It does not scruple, the more it flowers, to verge on pink. The iris? Pooh! Its blue never rises above a very pretty mauve.” Also color-conscious, Alexandre Dumas always composed his novels on blue paper (he wrote poetry on yellow paper, nonfiction on rose); to do otherwise, he said, was “unspeakable.”
Alexander Theroux, from “Blue”, The Primary Colours: Three Essays
