Alfie's End of Year Rec List 2024

Out of 447,090 words and 141 total fics, this year I wrote a whole 224k and 78 fics, which is a lot more than last year. I wrote for 10 different ships this year, including 3 new ones. Yay for progress, I guess.

Anyway, to celebrate a rather productive year here at the_oncoming_stormageddon's AO3 dashboard, I've decided to compile a list of all of my favorite fics that I would reccommend :D number three will shock you!

In a shocking turn of events, I lied, sorry. This is about my graphs. It's always about my graphs. All graphs are up to date as of 12/21/2023, and there isn't even a missing word somewhere that has to be accounted for!

(Did I type all of this up, realize I had another fic to post, and then have to go back in and fix everything? ...perhaps)

Anyway. Let's start with Taylor Swift.

As always, "Other" corresponds to fics with titles from other artists, "Non-Album" refers to titles from Taylor Swift songs that aren't on an album or are unreleased, and "None" refers to titles that weren't from any lyrics. Orville Peck and Maisie Peter were the big contributors to the "other" category this year. The second graph shows the percent of the number of fics, while the first graph is the combined word count. Also, I did have 1 fic with an If This Was a Movie title, and I categorized it under "Speak Now TV" instead of Fearless TV. Yell at me about it in the comments if you really care, since it's technically incorrect.

Last year, I had a big Fearless slice because of the Hey Stephen series, and it was kind of surprising to me to see how much I slowed down in doing those, with Fearless only having 4 fics to its name. The disparity between the number and word count of the evermore was a little odd to me, until I realized that my longest fic ever (Tuesday Night at Olive Garden, a destiel murder mystery) was named after an evermore song. One thing that did not surprise me was folklore only having 1 fic, because that is my least favorite album.

So...the destiel thing...

The SPN hyperfixation took hold of me in Feb/March of this year and has not let go yet. Looking at my all-time graphs (where its about 33%/40% destiel/solangelo for word count), I didn't think it was that bad, but plugging in the numbers for just this year...uh, yeah. It's that bad. Sorry.

I had a really strong streak of posting solangelo every month until March hit. Again, destiel hyperfixation in visual form. This year, I wrote lokius (L/MMM, from the show Loki) and sterek (DH/SS, from the show Teen Wolf) for the first time. I also posted destiel (C/DW) for the first time (the bad destiel fics of middle school alfie are staying in locked docs where they belong).

As expected, I had a bit of a drop-off in the summer months, but it was surprising for me to see that it never went back up after school started again. Last year, I had a huge spike in September, October, and December, but this year stayed relatively mellow. Next year, I'd really like to see which trend I follow monthly.

Anyway, that's the end of the graphs I have prepared for you (I will spare yall from the more complicated ones). Next year, I'd really like to start finishing up some of the unresolved fics and series I have (mostly solangelo ones that got drowned in the destiel flood). I'm doing my first ever big bang (for the Professor Layton fandom), so katriana (KL/EP) will make it onto my graphs for next year, as will destiel and solangelo.

Just did some counting and Neige calls Alfie "mon râleur" 40 times by the end of episode 31. "mon petit" comes in 2nd place with 33 times but evens out if you combine it with the 7 "little one"s

thank you for your important statistical work, this is incredible information. tracking Neige's nicknames is a good way to track the relationship, I think, as will become more clear as things go on. but I won't expand on that, I'll just let you all be feral about it. I dream of someone one day making some kind of Neige's nicknames graph. I'd perish of delight.

“Well, that was a complete and absolute disaster!” Oscar exclaimed, strutting into the room. Gary swivelled out from behind his desk spanning the length of some fifteen-odd computers, refusing to leave his chair “on a matter of personal principle”.

“What are you talking about?” he cried incredulously. “Your disapproval ratings are off the charts!”

He turned around the monitor with a supporting graph to prove his point. Gary was, in fact, right. Oscar – or rather, Pinstripe – was now leaps ahead of the others.

He faltered for a moment at Gary’s news. “Wait, really? Already?”

Gary shrugged. “People react fast.”

Oscar flashed him an impressed look but quickly dismissed it. “No! No, no, no! I don’t care about that.”

“Oh god, not this again.”

“Yes, this again! Alfred paid me no heed, and this was my most elaborate scheme yet.”

“You’re meant to hate him! He’s the hero! You’re natural enemies, for god’s sake!”

“Oh, shut up, Gary. There’s no way Alfred should have been able to resist me this time. I assumed command of a five-storey building, rigged it to the brim with non-lethal traps (something he took no note of, by the way – I could have easily made them all explosives), kidnapped two whole busses full of people and scattered them throughout the building, cornered off every entrance to the block the building is on except for an aerial landing (of which, once again, Alfie took no note), and even left a few sandwiches and waters on every floor in case the kidnappees got hungry.”

“Okay, first of all, just say “hostage”. “Kidnappee” is weird. Second –”

“I’m not done. I made my suit tighter so it really accentuates all parts of me – more than usual, I mean – and threw in, like, five extra head tilts and seductive winks.”

“I will admit, those were particularly nice touches. But, more importantly,” Gary began, smirking as he glanced at one of the computer screens. “Check your email. I think you’ll be very pleased.”

“What…” Oliver was confused, but obliged nonetheless.

LOVED THE NEW SUIT. DINNER AT 8? CAFÉ MILAN, 4 WEST STREET. (they’re closed to the public, but the owner owes me a favour)

It was Oscar’s turn to smirk. “About damn time.”

Two painstaking hours spent trying to pick out the perfect suit later, Oscar stood opposite Café Milan. He watched Alfred descend from the sky, the wind having rather generously ruffled up his hair. He had traded out his regular superhero outfit for a black tuxedo, something Oscar was thankful for – heroes have a shocking lack of flair.

“Thanks for meeting me,” he said, smiling as he finally touched the ground.

“Took you long enough to ask.”

Note, I don’t know if you can see it, or if only I can, but the above two numbers WON’T match what my AO3 page says as these numbers are LESS because I minused all words from works that I was listed as co-creator on when I did art, and I also minused those works and all my art posts from total works written.

4) What are your top five fics by kudos?

Okay, so I’m VERY interested in the answer to this question because for YEARS the one in the top spot, from 2017, has outperformed EVERYTHING else I’ve written. 

And even when I started writing in other fandoms, Supernatural stayed at the top. 

But look at this list (I put the year published in front of each fic) – This isn’t TRUE anymore. Yes, it’s still in the top spot, but out of HOW MANY FICS, I have a NEW ONE pushing into 2nd place???? MY EYES ARE BOGGLING!!!

5) Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? 

OF COURSE! They’re so fun! They can be a real boost on a bad day, and I’ve made friends inside the comments! Like the person who tagged me in this!

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? 

Okay, I don’t really do angsty endings. I LOVE angst, but I want a happy ending. Most of my fics that have angsty endings are either super short CODAs or part of a series that resolve the angst eventually – so I’ll give you these two:

What Time Forgets (MCU/Old Guard crossover Series: 49k, Rated M, Nicky/Joe/Bucky)

Till the End of the Line (MCU Canon AU Series: 86k, Rated E, Steve/Bucky/Clint/Natasha – basically a “What if”)

7) Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you have ever written? 

YES I DO!

Craziest? Probably Colliding Worlds – my Doctor Who/SPN crossover (54k, Rated G, Destiel). I had to make a timeline graph to keep track of which version of the doctor was making an appearance at any point in time. It looks like a spaghetti diagram threw up.

Most AMBITIOUS would be the 4 in one crossover I did: All Mixed Up (Rated G, 30k, Destiel, McKirk, Winterhawk) – Star Trek/SPN/MCU at Hogwarts (with a couple of actual HP characters thrown in)

8) Have you ever received hate on a fic? Nope. Thank god. I’ve had some weird comments, I will admit. But not hate.

9) Do you ever write smut? If so, what kind? I do. Um. Porn with plot, pretty much.

10) Have you ever had a fic stolen? I very much doubt it.

11) Have you ever co-written a fic before? 

Yes, for a challenge. It had 3 authors, counting me, and if the challenge hadn’t been set up the way it had, I’m still not sure we could have pulled it off.

It’s called Groundverse (Rated M, 14k, Destiel) – a Supernatural Endverse Groundhog day type fic told only in letters, notes, and journal entries from 3 main POV’s

12) What’s your all time favorite ship?

the Paul Lockhart critique of modern math education (shared at times by Alfie Kohn) is that what we call math is, until higher education, really just learning to execute algorithms. real math is creative problem solving.

it’s a fair critique, and i do think it’s fair to call only the latter “real math” (it’s what mathematicians do all day). but i have objections:

math class doesn’t just ask you to execute algorhims, it also asks you to judge which algorithm is appropriate based on the data available and the answer sought, and to organize the data into the inputs for the algorithm, and interpret the output in the original context. it’s hard to do this unless you understand the underlying concepts. once you do, you have a good part of creative problem solving skills for that domain. (personally i have found College Board tests really good at asking questions which require genuine understanding.)

the other part of creative problem solving is domain-nonspecific stuff like decomposing a problem into smaller parts, looking for invariants, etc. this stuff is way harder to teach, because it requires insight. it’s not obvious to me that this kind of thing improves substantially with practice.

i don’t know if the general population needs better creative problem solving skills for math. then again, i don’t know if the general population needs anything we teach in math beyond algebra and graphing. then again, most people get away without learning anything beyond that. i think we’d get more at the margins for introducing e.g. logic, statistical reasoning, maybe set theory; so if we have room to put anything new in, we should start with those. (i think we could safely take out most of geometry and the quadratic obsession, and deemphasize arithmetic operartions.)

one thing i think math education could to a better job of, which i think Lockhart would approve of, is teaching meta-math stuff. i remember getting into arguments as a kid about whether infinity was a number. i think there’s widespread confusion among almost everyone who isn’t a mathematician about what math is, which is how you end up with nonsensical questions like “is infinity a number?”. i’m not sure how receptive the average student would be to it, but at least for myself i think someone could have told me much sooner that math was just about finding premise-conclusion pairs, and the only reason i was being taught the definitions i was was because they were useful in a variety of contexts. certainly no one should be forced to learn imaginary numbers without this explanation.

Guys, here’s another evidence that Theon is more popular than ever. This graph shows Alfie Allen’s total number followers on Instagram over time. Look at the steep and very rapid growth since July 2017. Based on current trends we can predict that he’ll reach the 1-million mark by the beginning of 2018.

Skull Scene

For the skull scene we wanted to create something quite dramatic and eye catching for the opening scene. 

The skull is a free model that came in a Video Copilot Halloween model pack. I then brought the model into C4D and began animating the skull.

The first step was animating the jaw to slowly open and the skull itself slightly tilt backwards. I then animated it to slightly move forwards in Z space closer to the camera. I then animated a camera to simply fly in a straight line and after some tweaking with the time graphs ended up with something I was happy with.

Lighting the scene was fairly simple. I used 4 different lights placed around the skull, which all slowly rotate around the skull as the scene goes on.

I then created a dark background texture behind the skull. I did this as I was using Octane fog, which made the background appear a lot brighter without using this background object to darken it.

Once I was happy with the animations I rendered out the skull.

Below is a raw render straight from C4D.

Using an object ID pass allowed me to comp effects behind the skull and tweak the skull and background independently to adjust brightness with a lot more control.

After adding some particles (using 3D camera data from the scene & particular), slight tweaks to the background brightness levels, some rough hand drawn lines on the skull (using a mix of cc kernal, threshold and levels with a few mattes to reveal the lines), trapcode shine and some subtle glow this is how the skull looked. 

I then added the final touches by darkening the scene greatly, making it black/white and adding some grain/flicker 

and finally with Alfies text added on top.

Adwoa Aboah and Juergen Teller Team Up For Burberry

Adwoa Aboah and Juergen Teller have teamed up with Burberry to create a new photo series for the brand.

Commissioned by Burberry President and Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey, who leaves the brand at the end of the year, Teller and Adwoa collaborated on cast, location and aesthetic. The first set images from the collab feature Aboah together with her friends and family, including her cousins Alfie Husband, George Husband, Richard Theodore-Aboah and Kwame N’Dow, as well as Montell Martin and Mae Muller captured on Regent’s Canal in North London.

The group all wear pieces from the brand’s new collection including trench coats and sweatshirts featuring the Doodle print alongside giant tote bags with flashes of neon which are all available to purchase on Burberry.com from the 26th of December.

“It has been a huge honour for me to work with Burberry and Juergen Teller on this inspiring project. My role as both model and artistic director is one I have really enjoyed and embraced. Christopher Bailey is an incredible visionary and it has been an amazing experience to work together with him and Juergen to create this series of stories.” Aboah says.

Alfie's End of Year Rec List!

Out of 223,118 total words on AO3 and 69 (hehe nice) total works, 191k words and 64 of those works were written this year (including 43 solangelo works)!

So, to celebrate that, here's a list of all of my favorite fics that I wrote that I would recommend!

I spent all year making dozens of random fic graphs in Excel that don't matter at all to anyone but now that you're here, I am forcing you to read them! How fun!

And a very special thank you to Sanji, the incredibly talented owner of the server TaylorStorage, for his help in selecting colors to represent each album!

As you probably know, I name most (84.1%) of my fics after Taylor Swift lyrics. Here is a pie chart displaying the percent of the number of fics that each album had! "None" refers to titles I came up with, and "Not Taylor" indicates when it was a lyric from a song Taylor Swift did not write.

Unsurprisingly, Fearless (Taylor's Version) is in the lead because of my Hey Stephen series!

Here is the number of fics written by month, color coded to match the ship! The legend on the righthand side shows the initials of the ship (so NdA/WS is Nico di Angelo/Will Solace).

Similar to the Album graph, here is a pie chart showing the number of fics in each ship.

And this graph shows the relative total word counts of each ship. Again, solangelo is the clear winner, unsurprisingly! Buddie (Evan Buckley/Eddie Diaz from 9-1-1) only took the second spot because I went on a weird buddie writing spree at the end of December and wrote 6.3k words in three days!

This year, one graph I wanted to do was measuring the data from the Count of Album graph and measure it against how many songs are in each Taylor Swift album to see how those compared. But I hit a snag trying to calculate the number of total Taylor Swift songs when factoring in the non-album/unreleased songs. So hopefully I will have that graph for next year, as well as more graphs!

YouTube superstar Alfie Deyes is preparing to launch a new venture to collaborate with startups

Alfie Deyes is hugely popular on YouTube, building up a following of 5.4 million subscribers over the last decade with videos of his day-to-day life.

Deyes earns an estimated £500,000-to-£1 million annually from advertising, plus book and merchandising sales, and income from his properties.

Speaking to Business Insider at Lisbon's Web Summit, Deyes said he's building a new company to strike collaborations with early stage companies with "cool" ideas.

Deyes said he isn't necessarily interested in investing lots of money into startups, but wants to partner with projects which will play well with his millions of followers.

On the day Alfie Deyes is due to speak at Web Summit in Lisbon, there's a gaggle of teenagers waiting outside the VIP area.

Deyes — better known online as PointlessBlog — is 24 years old and probably unknown to anyone born before 1990. He has more than 5 million subscribers on YouTube, 5 million followers on Twitter, and gets 16 million views on average for his Snapchat Stories.

He is a superstar in his own right for his video blogs, or vlogs, about his day-to-day life. that fame is enhanced by the fact he is dating Britain's most popular YouTuber, the fashion and beauty vlogger Zoe Suggs, also known as Zoella.

Deyes doesn't disclose his earnings, but makes money from advertising against his YouTube videos, brand partnerships, merchandise, rent from his properties, and sales of his books. Estimates for his annual earnings range from £500,000 to £1 million, according to YouTube analytics site Social Blade.

Now he wants to harness his young audience, and everything he's learnt from making popular videos on YouTube, to help launch startups.

Business Insider was given 10 minutes to catch up with Deyes at Web Summit in Lisbon, where he was meeting with startups that pitch him through the conference app, or in-person at the busy investor lounge.

Deyes said he's in the process of building up a team for an as-yet unnamed new company, through which he'll strike partnerships with other early stage ventures. A spokeswoman wouldn't confirm a name for the new company, but said it would be open for business in the new year. So far, Deyes said, he's been hiring for a project manager, brands manager, operations staff, legal and finance, and sales staff.

He told Business Insider: "I'm all about still doing YouTube and making videos, but it's also about teaming up and working with really interesting people, great partnerships, and making cool new stuff that's never been done before.

"And using my audience — having those guys all brought on board, because they follow my life every single day. It's about doing bigger picture things, working on new companies and investing in cool new stuff that will benefit myself and my audience."

Deyes doesn't seem to have specific ideas in mind but, when pressed, says one investment he'd "love to make" would be to buy shares in a gin company.

"Or I'd love to work on a restaurant — something like that," he said. He's also willing to work with tech startups.

"It won't be 'Alfie Deyes' [branded], just things I've helped shape," he added.

All of this lends some credence to the rumours that Deyes has quit Gleam, the powerful talent management company which put Zoella, her brother Joe Sugg, Deyes, and many others on the path to YouTube stardom. Deyes' spokeswoman wouldn't comment on his status with Gleam. Gleam did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Fans have spotted, however, that Deyes does not appear on the front page of Gleam's site alongside its other YouTubers.

Deyes said that he had been in a "bubble" over the last decade, building up PointlessBlog on YouTube and striking the occasional brand deal, but rarely thinking more ambitiously.

"Everything I've experienced in the last nine years has almost been like a bubble," he said. "And I've done extremely well in this bubble, and I've had so much fun, but I haven't seen what is [out there].

"It's not that I want to hit any particular thing."

With six minutes of the interview left, it's difficult to wring precise details out of Deyes beyond the fact he wants to meet people with ideas.

"If someone needs £1 million, there are people who can get £1 million more easily than me. I'm not that person to be chucking in big money early stage," he said.

Business Insider explained the concept of Seedrs to Deyes, the crowdfunding platform which lets people invest in early stage startups. One of its most famous users is the tennis star Andy Murray.

Seedrs is a new concept to Deyes, but he said he would only invest or collaborate with startups or projects where there was a relationship.

"It would be hard, I don't know if I would be feel comfortable investing in something without meeting the team and getting to know what I can bring to them and what they want to get back," he said. "I feel like if it's just monetary, someone else can provide that bit."

Asked why he isn't simply launching his own startup, Deyes said: "I've done that. I've got an ecommerce store called The Creator Store where we do merchandising for different talent, predominantly YouTubers, we do pop-up shops in London. We've done that and it's great ... But there are endless opportunities. I want to see what other people are up to."

Alfie Deyes needs to diversify beyond YouTube

It makes sense that Deyes wants to diversify.

YouTube stardom probably isn't a long-term career option and, if Social Blade's metrics are correct, Deyes' followers on his main PointlessBlog YouTube channel are strong but plateauing.

Deyes didn't talk about his metrics with Business Insider, but here are two graphs from Social Blade that shows his subscribers growing quickly, then flattening out:

Once a YouTuber hits a plateau, it may make sense to prioritise loyal, engaged subscribers over chasing new ones.

And an estimated maximum salary of £1 million a year, while out of reach of most British 24-year-olds, actually isn't that much considering Deyes' comparative fame. It's not enough to put him on any rich lists, and it's less than the BBC's highest paid presenters.

Finally, there's the risk of depending solely on a medium which is still popular with advertisers, but is increasingly running into trouble over inappropriate content, a magnet for predators, and terrorist videos.
