if i loved you less i'd be a liar (zoyalina)
alina has been working for mi5 for years, and the only thing she can say about her job is that it's boring as hell. so when an enigmatic female serial killer seems to taunt her with a string of bread crumbs and bodies left around the world, she can't help but chase after her like she's a lifeline. or, the zoyalina villaneve au we deserve.
a/n: written for @generalstarkov's birthday!! happy birthday beloved 🥰 finally cracking the list of requests you sent me hehe. this is just a short snippet to start the au, but hopefully i'll write a bit more for it later when i finally graduate and have some time. ANYWAY GO WATCH KILLING EVE IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

Alina sighed as she looked at herself in the bathroom mirror. It was her eighth straight hour at the hospital, and it was beginning to show. Her skin looked almost waxy under the harsh white lighting, the dark circles under her eyes more pronounced than usual. Her scalp ached from the tight and professional bun she’d scraped her pale hair into that morning. Mal was going to ask questions when she got home, again, but it wasn’t like she could tell him she’d been recruited by MI6 to track down a serial killer responsible for dozens of murders around the globe. He’d just give her that concerned look again, and be so horribly nice to her that she’d want to scream and break something like one of his elementary school students just to try to get him to understand.
There was something wrong with her, and he couldn’t see it. No one could.
Alina yanked the hair tie from her hair and relished the painful tingling in her scalp as her hair uncoiled itself. The faucet turned on with a reluctant squeak, and she splashed cold water onto her face in an attempt to rejuvenate herself. She’d be stuck here for at least another two hours. Maybe if she caved and bought a coffee from the ancient vending machine outside the witness’ room, she’d get through it without strangling her new partner. With that cheery thought, she began coaxing her hair back into a semblance of a respectable style.
Alina nearly jumped out of her skin as the door of the one working stall slammed open. She hadn’t even noticed someone else had been in the restroom. So much for working at an international espionage agency.
In the mirror, Alina watched as a woman dressed in dark blue scrubs stepped out of the stall and took the sink beside her. She didn’t turn the water on. Alina paused, her hair half-up. The sense of being watched prickled the back of her neck.
She turned and found the other woman watching her. She was easily the most gorgeous woman Alina had ever seen with skin the color of teakwood and glossy black curls that tumbled down her back. She had eyes only a shade darker than her scrubs, and they seemed to read every thought and feeling even Alina couldn’t understand about herself. Alina couldn’t help fixating on the tiniest details like the small bruise on her wrist, the gold necklace around her throat, the stray curl that wouldn’t stay down. Alina wanted to study her for hours, and evidently, the opposite was true as the woman continued staring at her, her expression unreadable.
“Can I help you?” Alina asked, her hands still tangled in her own hair.
Her eyes were cold, Alina realized. Cold and calculating. They regarded her cooly for another second before the woman turned away to the sink and washed her hands in a few quick, forceful movements. Her nails were painted cherry red. Alina returned her gaze back to her own reflection and tried to ignore the presence of the other woman.
Just when the restroom door opened and Alina thought she was almost free, the woman paused over the threshold and looked back. Alina’s eyes were drawn to her like a magnet. The corners of the woman’s lips tugged upwards as their eyes met, and her face became even lovelier, if that was possible. Her eyes warmed, ice melting on the first day of spring.
“Wear your hair down.” It sounded like an order. With that, the woman stepped back and she was gone. The tension in the air bled away and Alina blinked, feeling like a boat that had been unmoored or a kite whose string had been cut, never to touch the ground again.
Something in the world had shifted, and she didn’t know what.
She left her hair down.

Holiday prompts: snowfall + darklina. ❤️

“You were right, Sasha,” Alina said softly, trying to match her tone to the gentle drift of the snowflakes still visible through the many-paned windows that made up the entire back wall of their bedchamber in what was still called the General’s retreat, though Aleksander had moved far beyond that position and he refused to sleep without Alina beside him in the wide bed with its walnut headboard most delicately carved with all the flowers found in the valley below. Ivan had scowled so fiercely when he first saw the room that Aleksander had spontaneously offered to have David replace the glass with a material of his own design, diamond hard, clear as crystal, impenetrable. It was still cold to the touch, which Alina found both reassuring and provocative when Aleksander made love to her with the glass against her bare back.
“I’m always right, milaya,” he said, with too much joy in his voice to sound smug. Nevertheless, she could not help rolling her eyes just a little, knowing he would not see it, the smallest secret.
“So you believe,” she said. He shifted slightly, finding some impossible way to bring her closer within his embrace, the sense of his shadows around her holding the dark warmth of her sable cloak. There was no name for his scent, but it made her feel the same way the snow did, safe and contented, with a tremulous sense of loveliness inviolate within her.
“I do not believe, I know. Tell me how, though—how was I right this time?”
Alina looked down from the view of the snow falling in the dusk, the peaks of the mountains growing dim, and let her eyes rest on Aleksander’s hands on her wrists. He was so finely made it took the most gifted seamstress in Os Alta to make clothes that did not seem crude and coarse in contrast to his skin, the perfect balance of his sinew and bone, the elegant and vulnerable line of his throat. The boot-maker had an easier time though the man swore there was no noble in Ravka who could match Lord Kirigan’s distinction. Tonight, she and Aleksander lay in their nightclothes, Alina in a shift of unadorned Zemla flax woven to the same sheen as silk, without silk’s coolness, and Aleksander in a pair of the loose trousers favored by the nomads of the fells, his meryno banyan draped across a chair in the corner of the room. If she turned her head, she’d feel his skin against her cheek and then his lips at her temple, the hands at her wrists moving swiftly to her waist, her hip, the curve of her thigh pressed against his. She kept still, wanting the anticipation before the satisfaction, waiting for the night to finally obscure the snow.
“You said we should spend the afternoon watching the snow fall. That it would be better than any other occupation I could imagine, to be quiet together,” Alina answered. “You said I wouldn’t regret staying inside, being idle.”
“You don’t regret it then, umnaya?” he asked. When they were alone, he hardly ever addressed her without an endearment, as if he must make sure she knew how cherished she was with every phrase, every breath. She turned her hand so that she could slide her palm against his, let him feel the light within her beckon his shadow, a subtle and ardent embrace only two Summoners could share, as intimate as climax, his name on her lips when she had no voice left to cry out.
“I said you were right, didn’t I?”
“I needed to hear you say it,” he said. “I knew it, but I needed to hear your voice, to feel you as you spoke—”
“Why, Sasha?”
“So I could believe,” he said, as simply as the night fell suddenly, the skies clearing. The moonlight was reflected in the snow, the world without silvery. When she turned to look at his face, Alina knew she would see the moonlight in his dark eyes.

Update: new day, new top player, new group name. Our current leader here, whose name translates to “Corpse(s) Revival 4410″ (don’t ask me what the numbers mean I don’t know,) has renamed out group here to “生き返れ生き返れ...,” or, “Revive, Revive...” I guess they’re a bit enthusiastic for Obon, huh?
Also, holding onto a spot in the top 20! All hail the Goddess of Charge, Kamisen!
