Best Day Of Our Lives
A Jemma wedding fic featuring a Kitty reunion, married with children Kierartina, and Haline being cute together. It can also be found here on AO3 :)
Also, a thank you to Kaitlin, @ineedadrinkorsleep, for allowing me to use her list of Kierartina baby names, you’re amazing!
Tagging @katie33333 @tessagraycarstairs @zafirafox4636 @fairchild-squad @lily-chen-deserves-better @ineedadrinkorsleep @older-brother-kit because I have a tag list now!
Julian straightened the collar of the suit. It was bright in shade, a thing of fire and gold. It was the kind of fire so bright it almost seemed to hold no color at all, leaving the shimmering runes custom to shadowhunter weddings to almost compete with the brightness of it. It was blinding, and Julian could admire the craftsmanship of the suit, tailored to near perfection. Julian could care less about the flashiness of the suit though. It wouldn’t matter whether he were wearing jeans, or even were covered in paint splatters. What mattered was that he was getting married to his best friend, Emma Carstairs.
For the longest time, he was sure he wouldn’t have this opportunity. He had thought he had sealed his fate on that day in Idris. The day after the Dark War, when he had asked the person he loved to be his parabatai. He was prepared to live a life of unrequited love, but by some stroke of luck, he was getting married to her. The bond had been broken, and they could be together. He could be happy.
A pang went through him as he thought back to those days, back when Livvy was still with them. She would've been wild with excitement to be there, to have planned it to perfection. Julian was almost surprised that the pain hadn’t dwindled over time, but there was still an ache as he thought of her. The feeling of loss never truly fades. He had enough space in his heart to love Emma, while still hurting from the loss of his sister.
Julian tugged at the bottom of the jacket once more.
“You look lovely, Jules.” He turned to spot his sister, Helen Penhallow Blackthorn, his suggenes, leaning against the doorframe, a bright smile on her face. She herself was dressed in a flowing gown barely brushing against the top of the floor. “We should probably get going though, you wouldn’t want to be late to your own wedding.”
~^*^~
Kit Herondale should have known better. It was bound to happen really, he was definitely pushing his luck after about the second or third wedding he’d been to, but he hadn’t expected it to be so sudden. It had all started earlier that year, when virtually every friend of Jem and Tessa’s had collectively decided to destroy Kit’s life, a simple one of sneaking Mina extra cookies and avoiding his problems, by forcing him to face all his problems at their weddings. And currently, he was faced with the person he was avoiding most.
Kit had somehow managed to skate by during most of the weddings though. Simon and Isabelle’s was first, Kit having managed to stay as close to the crowd as possible, and silently slipping away after the main portion of the ceremony to reduce his chances of getting involved in a rather awkward discussion. Only a few months had passed before Clary and Jace got married as well, Kit glimpsing a head of dark hair before bolting as soon as he could, claiming that he had to take care of Mina. In fact, what was doing was hiding in the library, pouring his heart out to his little sister.
“You’d think after 3 years my heart would stop beating so rapidly that I became concerned about my own health, but no,” Kit glanced at Mina, who was currently laughing at him, eyes half shut from joy.
She let out another giggle.
“How dare you find joy in my pain?” he said, dramatically laying a hand on his head and leaning back against the bookshelf, though the smile illuminating his face revealed his true intentions. “How can I go on now, betrayed by my own sister?”
Kit smiled at the thought.
Kieran, Mark, and Cristina’s wedding had been somewhat more challenging, him having been caught behind a huge oak tree by none other than Livvy Blackthorn, but he had somehow managed to convince her to tell no one, i.e. her twin brother, a.k.a. the person Kit was trying so desperately to avoid.
“Please, Livvy, don’t tell him I’m here,” Kit was pleading now, already on his knees, gazing up at the ghost above him.
Livvy rolled her eyes. “Fine, but only because I want you to do this on your terms. Remember though, my ship must be canon!”
“Your what?!-”
And that finally brought them up to this wedding, Emma and Julian’s to be more specific. Having been related to, however distant that relation may be, the bride had seemingly got the Herondale/Gray/Carstairs family (or as Kit liked to call it, the Herongraystairs family) a one way ticket to the wedding, and consequently, Kit facing the person he was dreading to meet again.
It had been going relatively well, he’d thought, the ceremony about to begin, and Kit quietly tucked into a corner. That was until Mina dragged him towards the table piled high with drinks, having spotted Max Lightwood-Bane, Rafael Lightwood-Bane, Tavvy Blackthorn, Gianna Blackthorn-Rosales, and Nico Blackthorn-Rosales (Cristina, Mark, and Kieran had Gianna and Nico a year before being married, and Mina instantly fell for them, claiming that they were her “best fwends”) playing near there, and Kit had thought maybe a drink or two wouldn’t hurt. He was severely wrong of course as Kit had failed to notice one head of dark hair standing not far from that very table.
Kit blamed Mina’s doe eyes, and his ability to fall for them instantly.
After his first drink, a voice had made Kit turn, causing him to end up where he was currently, nearly on the floor.
“Hello. I’d like to talk to you.”
~*^*~
Julian was bubbling with joy, a smile brightening his face as he was led to a platform, Helen by his side. He stopped at the top of the steps, turning to give Helen an appreciative nod and a smile. Julian took a sharp inhale as Emma walked around the corner, Cristina lending her off to the stage. All thoughts left him. She was breathtaking, wrapped in a gold silk gown that hugged her waist before flaring down to the ground. A sheer overlay on the silk skirt caught the brightness of the witchlight, complimenting the gold in her hair.
But it wasn’t only gold, was it? It was a beautiful mix of cadmium yellows, naples yellows, golds, yellow ochres.
She was beautiful, and Julian couldn’t help but think that he was the luckiest person in the world. As Emma reached the platform, she leaned in, a grin plastered on her face.
“I know, I look stunning.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder in a playful manner.
Julian shot back a nod. “It is your wedding, I’d expect no less.”
And with that, the ceremony began, Brother Enoch reciting a few words, before steles appeared in their hand. It passed by in a blur, and before Julian knew it, they were kissing. Time seemed to still, Julian thought he heard a crash somewhere in the crowd, a flash of blond hair blurring by the table, but he paid no attention to it. The room melted away, it was as though they, Emma and Julian, were the only two people in the room. It was perfect.
~*^*~
“HOLY-” Kit choked on his drink. He had forgotten how graceful shadowhunters were, how easily they could move without alerting anyone surrounding them. Unfortunately, that shadowhunter grace had apparently skipped a generation because Kit found himself clutching at the table for support, having nearly fallen from shock.
“Are you alright?” It was none other than Tiberius Nero Blackthorn, his arm outstretched. He was looking at him, and at that moment, all rational thought left him. He said something roughly equivalent to an audible keysmash before clearing his throat.
“Yeah, I’m alright,” Kit brushed himself off, standing up as though nothing had happened. If you pretend to be confident, it won’t be long until you begin to feel confident as well. For the first time since the wedding fiasco began, he actually looked at Ty. He was taller now, Kit was surprised to see, though he supposed he shouldn’t have. Three years did a lot to change someone, he supposed, but those eyes were the same. A beautiful yet deadly storm churning above a sea. “So, what did you want to talk about?”
Kit leaned against the table once more, this time a bit more suave and cool, and less panicky than the first.
“Why are you avoiding me?” It was a simple question, clear as day. Kit choked up a bit. “And why did you leave?”
All of a sudden, he was fifteen again, doing anything he could for Ty, the beautiful shadowhunter that had held a knife to his throat. The nephilim he would have done anything for. Years of suppressing his emotions didn’t prepare Kit for this moment, he doubted anything could have. Ty looked calm enough, but his hands were frantically twisting and unknotting a ball of pipe cleaners. He was nervous, Kit knew it, and so Kit blurted it out. He never could have told Ty a lie, even if he wanted to. Even after three years.
“Because I was hurt, and I was running away from what had happened,” Kit took a deep breath, as Ty nodded, understanding it. Kit, suspecting he was going to turn away, proceeded to continue talking, hoping to get a laugh, a smile, anything out of Ty. “Tessa thinks it was the Herondale dramatics though.”
Kit didn’t add the second part of what she said, “Running away from the person you love ‘for their own good’ is alarmingly common among Herondales,” but Ty let out a laugh, bright and brilliant, so it was a win in Kit’s book.
It was an amazing laugh, low and lovely, beautiful to hear.
“Tessa knows Herondales well.”
“She does.”
The silence stretched on for a moment, though it was a comfortable one. A silence in which both parties simply enjoyed the presence of the other.
The soft piano finally registered in Kit’s mind. A crazy idea formed in his head, one his fifteen year old self would banish to the darkest corners of his brain.
“May I have this dance?”
Turned out he wasn’t the only one to have that idea, Kit thought as he accepted Ty’s hand. An impish grin spread across Kit’s face.
“I thought you’d never ask.”
~*^*~
Soft music began playing from the piano in the corner, Jace Herondale shooting a wink at Helen as she rolled her eyes at his antics. A smile rested upon her face, as Helen looked at her brother and Emma, both beaming joy, foreheads together as they swayed to the music. It was so genuine, and beautiful, she couldn’t stop grinning even if she wanted to. She’d already missed so much of her family’s life, exiled on Wrangel Island, that she was glad to be here, sharing this moment with them.
And how lovely it was, gold decorations pinned to the walls, tables lined with dishes and drinks. Kieran, Mark, and Cristina were on the sides, cooing at their third child, Emelia, an adorable baby girl born only a few months ago. Helen spotted Ty dancing with Kit by the drink table, both blissfully unaware of the children bouncing about close to them. Dru was at the center of the ballroom with Jaime Rosales, gown flaring as she was spun.
Aline leaned into her, resting her head upon Helen’s shoulder. She was stunning, in a wine red gown with glittering gold accents, dark hair brushing against her back. Helen couldn’t stop but think about how lucky she was, to have someone so beautiful, so wonderful.
“Young love, it’s beautiful isn’t it?”
Her wife was most certainly correct, and Helen agreed wholeheartedly.
“It really is.”

Dan-Dan, how you doing love? Idk if you already answered this so feel free to ignore it if you have. Now that you read Lady Midnight, do you have any prediction of which Blackthorn will die in the second book? I’m curious to know if you’ll guess it right 👀👀 Your commentaries are keeping me sane btw! Luv u
Lety!! I am doing good. I am on sick leave indefinitely hence I have a shit load of time to read and fuck about on tumblr :) It’s the life god intended for me (except for that being sick part lmao) How are you? I hope you are doing well - all things considered.
Okay. Oof. I haven’t actively thought about this because I am scared so let’s do this right here right now. This is going to be a little hard because I have miraculously avoided spoilers and have no clue about the TDA. Like what even is gonna happen next?? Who knows?? But since I’ve read LM, I have some idea of the significance of the characters. Okay let’s do this shit by the process of elimination.
Helen - 6/10 - The reason why Helen chances of dying is a high is because from what I see she isn’t really significant to the plotline - which is a shame because she has so much potential smh. So, if she dies (while it might be really sad) it won’t cause a massive change. But it’s not super likely either because CC would be mad to destroy the only lesbian couple in the current timeline. Let them be in peace in Wrangel Island please - LA is a shit show, let them stay in polar bear land!!!
Julian - 0/10 - Let’s be real. He is the main. He ain’t gonna die. While CC might be angst queen, she ain’t no R.R Martin.
Mark - 0/10 - Mark’s storyline is one of the best among the Blackthorns tbh. He has been taken hostage, tortured and now he is getting back to normal. His character is unique because he is loyal to nephilim but also has some feelings towards faeries - especially with the cold peace going on. His arc is going really well so far with his struggle of trying to fit back into nephilim life and trying to understand his role in his family and the whole thing with Emma/Cristina/Kieran. So therefore killing him in the middle of his arc would be really bad writing and I don’t think CC would make that decision.
Ty - 4/10 - Other than Julian and Mark, Ty is the only other Blackthorn who has a designed and well-defined role in the family and even as a character in TDA. While CC might not kill him because of his representation (he has autism and also he is gay/bi - idk) I think it is mostly because he has an established role unlike the latter, whose roles are a little ambiguous. Ty is the strategist of the team and without him, it would be hard for the team to move further in their missions. I also think he might not die because of Kit - I think it might be a ship/dynamic that might be developed in TWP.
Livvy - 9/10 - She is my biggest concern and therefore I have drones monitoring her at all hours. I think Livvy is most likely to die because of several reasons. Her character is still not established well. Her role is ambiguous in the family. But the main reason I think she might die is because of her connection to Ty. I know CC will make this death really painful, so I feel that it might be one of the twins - because that’s just cruel - especially since they are so dependent on each other and love each other to death. But like I said, I don’t think CC will kill Ty. I also think if Livvy dies, it might be an important point of Ty’s character arc and give him a something to deal with or do other than just being the strategist of the team. I think it would lead to his own plotline as opposed to being the sidekick like he is right now. I do hope I am wrong though.
Dru - 7/10 - Again another underdeveloped character who has a vague plotline. The only reason she has a lower score than Livvy is because Livvy dying and ‘abandoning’ Ty is more angstier than Dru dying. Yikes.
Tavvy - 0/10 - I don’t think this is going to happen. He was almost killed in Lady Midnight so it is unlikely that he will be killed again. Also, we already lost one little boy in TMI, so Tavvy dying seems a little repetitive. So, nope.
Arthur - 10/10 - This is just wishful thinking and I have zero regrets.
PS - I don’t know whether the blackthorn dies in LoS or Qooad so I am super anxious to start the next book.
PPS - I am lowkey hoping Annabel is ressured and then dies again since she is also a blackthorn. But that’s def not gonna happen also very cruel omg what’s wrong with me???
PPPS - If anyone spoils this death for me, I will ruin your life :)

Catch Fire - Chapter 1
First chapter is up! Hope you guys like it! I did my research before using Mexican references, but if there’s still some mishap feel free to correct me! Happy reading! :)

If Emma was asked that question five years ago, she would have easily said numerous reasons.
"I want to be with Julian. I want to officially be his. I want to spend my travel year with him. I want to answer his calls. I want to reply to his messages. I want to say I’m sorry. I want to take care of the kids with him. I want us to damn our lives as long as we got to live it."
But this was a different time now. She may still want the same things, but the person she wants to be with might not want it anymore.
Chapter 1
2018
“La hermana! Go!”
Emma leaped from the building, her blonde hair trailing behind her, and sliced the Eidolon demon in two. The demon made inhumane sounds before it vanished, the creature back to its true dimension. Cristina rushed up to Emma, smiling. “Bien hecho! Bien hecho!”
Emma laughed, cleaning Cortana using one of the fallen cloth from the dancers in the parade. “Tina, everything I do is well done.” She tossed the cloth full of demon ichor away in disgust. “Not the way I planned my Cinco de Mayo night though.”
Cristina rolled her dark brown eyes. “Like you enjoyed the last four ones anyway. You just either go on the roof of the Institute or smuggle enchiladas to your room!”
Emma shrugged. “Your mother’s enchiladas are the best!”
Cristina shook her head. The two started walking back to the Institute, which was the other way from the parade and the festivities. It didn’t matter though, since the Rosales family hosted their own celebration back at the Institute. For five years, Mexico had been Emma’s home, if there ever was one.
Cristina’s phone rang. She pulled it from her pocket and looked at the screen, emitting a Spanish curse from her. “Mark just texted. We have ten minutes to get to the Institute before Mama hits our heads with a plato!”
Taking Emma’s hand, they took off in the night.
-----
Upon reaching the Institute, they were greeted by Mark Blackthorn. He and Cristina exchanged a few kisses, releasing a sound of disgust from Emma. Mark laughed while Cristina rolled her eyes.
“Everyone is by the gardens, but I suggest you dress to the occasion first.” Mark said. Cristina agreed and with a peck for Mark, left to change.
Emma was about to follow when Mark grabbed her arm. She tried to shake her nervousness away. Being alone with Mark will only result in one thing. Talking about someone. “Hi, Mark.”
“Cristina told me about your decision. Are you sure you want to do that?” He asked, his voice laced with concern.
Mark is a gorgeous blonde boy with two different shades of eyes that shows two parts of himself. One gold eye represents his Faerie heritage, specifically his time on the Wild Hunt, and one blue-green eye, the color of the sea, marks him as a member of a distinct family, the Blackthorns. He is also Julian’s older brother, though his time with the fey made him the same age as Julian now.
Emma faked a hurt expression. “Don’t you want me back in Los Angeles?”
Mark turned more serious. “You know what I mean, Emma. Are you ready to face Julian?”
Hearing his name made Emma's heart hurt. This was what he wanted to avoid, and has been doing a good job at until today. She knows that Mark was only asking for her wellbeing, and most likely her brother’s as well, since Emma is certain that her former parabatai hates him now.
She sighed. “Dru has been begging that I come back now. She’s just turned 18, and wants Christina and I to introduce her to adulthood. Helen wants me back for her daughter’s birthday, since I’m the godmother, or so she says. Ty’s assigned by the Scholomance in Los Angeles, so he’s coming home. Tavvy also wants me to be the one to train him, says he looks up to me and everything. Also, don’t you wish Tina to be with you back in the Institute? Don’t tell me otherwise.”
It was Mark’s turn to sigh. “I do want that. I miss her there, which is why I try to visit her as much as I can here, but I also want you to be sure with your decision. Besides everyone giving you a reason to come back, do you have a reason that makes you want to?” He asked.
If Emma was asked that question five years ago, she would have easily said numerous reasons. I want to be with Julian. I want to officially be his. I want to spend my travel year with him. I want to answer his calls. I want to reply to his messages. I want to say I’m sorry. I want to take care of the kids with him. I want us to damn our lives as long as we got to live it. But this was a different time now. She may still want the same things, but the person she wants to be with might not want it anymore.
“I just want to be there for you, guys. You’ve given me a family when I had none, and even after I left the Institute, you still accepted me and what I’ve done. You always reached out and made me feel like I’m still part of that family. I think I can finally pay that back.” She replied instead, and though it was not her reasons before, she knows in her heart that all she said was true.
Mark regarded her for a moment before finally nodding. He offered her a smile and a hug. Emma feels that her statements were still not enough to please Mark, but the conversation is over for now. Hopefully forever.
“We’ll all be home soon, then.”
Emma truly wished that it would still feel like that once she’s there.
-----
Once Emma was able to take a quick shower and dress herself up in a tight orange floral top and an accompanying maxi skirt, she left her room and immediately went to the garden. When she arrived, food was already being served. Apart from the Rosales family, some other families went to the Institute to celebrate the event.
She recognized three faces. Nasreen Chaudhury, from the Mumbai Institute, was conversing with Jocelyn Fairchild and Luke Garroway, Clary’s parents. Last time Emma heard from her somewhat older sister, the pair was traveling and was currently in India, where they may have been welcomed by Nasreen.
Emma greeted them with a nod as she went to get herself a plate. Cristina and Mark approached her there and got themselves food as well. “Diego and Divya send their regards. They’re busy in New York right now, and cannot portal to come.” Cristina explained.
Diego Rosales was a graduate of the Scholomance and Tina’s ex-boyfriend. He fought alongside Emma and the others against the Cohorts five years ago. After that, Alec Lightwood, Jace’s parabatai and Magnus Bane’s husband, was appointed Consul. However, they lost Idris soon after, since the remaining Cohort members don’t want to acknowledge him in the position. Alec decided to leave them be and gave all Shadowhunters a choice to leave the world and stay in Idris, or go out and fulfill their mandate. The country of Shadowhunters is now closed from the world, no one can enter it, and no one can leave it.
For those who chose to stay outside of Idris, a new form of the Clave was birthed. Alec gave Diego the position of the Inquisitor, and the center of their ruling was transferred to the New York Institute. This was where Alec originally resided, and he wants to be there for his kids Max and Rafael. Once Diego accepted the position, he and his girlfriend, Divya, settled there as well.
“What did your mother say now that Perfect Diego missed Cinco de Mayo for the first time?” Emma jokingly asked, earning a laugh from Mark.
Tina shook her head in turn. “Mama is disappointed, but she’ll live. We’re all grown up now and need to set out in the world. Besides, I’m also leaving her in a week.” She replied.
The trio took their filled plates and settled in a nearby coffee table and ate. The ambiance of the garden was still serene, despite the celebration. The presence of nature sent a calm wind throughout the garden. A mariachi band was playing music that sounded festive that doesn’t get your mind throbbing. Children were dancing near them, accompanied by some elders. There was a faint chatter in the air among the tables, where Emma could hear adults talking about different things. The smell of food wafted in the air, that even though she already has a plate full of it, sends an invitation for another round.
Mark and Cristina were conversing with themselves between bites. Emma decided to continue eating and just observe the surroundings. Mexico was not hard to fall in love with. She remembers her first thoughts when she and Cristina portaled here. The Mexico Institute was a one story villa only, but the land was wide, spanning a few hectares. And despite the Institute having one floor, it is set on high ground, giving a fantastic view of the city below. This is one of the reasons why Emma was often found on the roof. Another is that it brings back wonderful childhood memories with someone.
Reminiscing her first time in Mexico brings back another memory, though a painful one. She recounts the events that happened before she set foot on the Institute’s doors.
She remembers asking for Cristina’s help just after she woke up in the Basilias. She tells her of her dream, and that she needs to leave as soon as she can. She pleads Tina that she doesn’t tell anyone else. She pleads that Tina help her have a place at the Institute in Mexico, like they planned during her travel year. She pleads that she immediately leave once she got her things from the Institute, it didn’t matter if the other girl was coming or not, and she cannot ask her for this, knowing that she is finally happy with Mark. But Cristina listened and understood, and she accepted. “You won’t go through this alone, Emma Carstairs.” She said. “I am coming with you.”
She remembers herself asking for Jem, and begging him to get her back to Los Angeles quickly. Despite Emma’s confusing requests, he brings Tessa to the room, the four of them portaling. She remembers rushing up to her room, Cristina to hers, and they quickly pack their things. She remembers passing by Julian’s room, and walking in at the last minute to grab a worn shirt of his, filled with paint splotches. She remembers crying as she puts it in her bag. She remembers going outside the Institute, seeing Tessa and Jem and a portal waiting for them.  She remembers finding the Blackthorns rushing to get to her. She remembers them calling her name in confusion, but a voice stood out.
“Emma? Where are you going?” Julian asks, confused and still limping from his injuries as he approached. Upon realizing the presence of a portal, he quickly runs to reach her, his eyes pleading. “Emma, please no.”
She remembers herself crying as the boy she loves look desperate. She remembers wanting to run to him, to embrace him, to soothe him, to be with him.
Instead, she finds herself running to the portal, Cristina at her tail, before it vanishes behind them.
Emma suddenly feels hot tears spilling down her cheeks. She quickly wipes them away and finds Mark and Cristina looking at her in concern. She offers them a weak smile and says, “I’m going back to my room.” before standing up and leaving the garden.
But she did not go back to her room. Instead, she goes to the roof of the Institute. Like the reason for her tears, going up the roof was an annoying habit. It did bring her a sense of contentment, seeing the view, but it brought more memories that she didn’t need to be reminded of. Maybe she loves the pain, however sadistic it makes her.
She settled herself at the edge of the roof, which overlooked the garden and the city. She pulled out her phone, scrolling through her messages. She received one from Dru earlier that day, sending her a trailer of an upcoming horror film and begging her to watch it with her once she’s back. She also sent a photo of herself and Tavvy, eating donuts. Ty messaged her three days ago, asking her to get him a rare Mexican bird “for research purposes”. Emma shook her head. Mark was also in her latest contacts, and before he came to Mexico, sent him a video of himself digging at the Institute’s new garden, made by himself. Tavvy was taking the video as Mark took a handful of dirt with worms sticking out, and the video was cut when he threw it on Tavvy’s face. That earned another laugh from her.
She clicked Helen’s contact and scrolled through their shared pictures, before finding the one she was searching for. It was a photo of the Los Angeles Institute celebrating the latest New Year’s day, everyone’s faces stuffed with food. Helen transformed it into some sort of greeting card, and sent it to all her contacts. She sees Tavvy reaching for a slice of pizza with his greasy fingers. The 11-year-old was growing his hair longer now, saying it makes him look older in a way. For Emma, he was still the baby who called her “Memma”. Dru was wearing her usual gothic style, but unlike her 13-year-old self, she puts on mature pieces that highlights her assets. Emma was proud of her, remembering how Dru was insecure because of what their aunt told her once about her shape, but now she carries herself with confidence. She sees Ty, back for the holidays that time, his headphones on but still posing for the photo. He was drinking something in a cup, which Emma thinks is still fruit punch, despite Ty being 20 years old now. Mark was holding a bowl of fruits and caught jumping, fruits flying everywhere. A 23-year-old Helen and Aline were at the center of the photo, along with their baby girl, who Emma was yet to meet. The three were hugging each other, creating a cuter smaller family picture.
Finally, she looks at the boy at the far right of the picture, not looking at the camera, but shyly laughing at something while looking at his siblings. Julian. He was 22 years old now, like Emma. He looks more built and taller, and even though it’s been five years, Emma could still feel her heart thumping at the sight of him. What more when I see him? she thought.
She shook her head to rid her thoughts on Julian. This was not what the past five years was supposed to do to her. She closed her phone and settled it next to her.
She could already see herself in a week, when she comes back to Los Angeles. The others will be happy to see her. They would tell her that they miss her, and recount events that she either missed or she already heard from them through calls or texts but want to repeat. She would settle back in her old room, which was untouched, but would be bombarded with the Blackthorns from time to time -all except one.
She could see Julian not eager of her presence. Avoiding her at all costs. Shutting himself in his painting room. She imagines his private room rid of all her portraits. His most hated color now was any shade of yellow. She could see him asking her what nerve she had to go back here, when Emma avoided any way he found to reach her. She could see him resenting her. Who wouldn’t resent their parabatai that left? Who wouldn’t resent someone who promised you a lifetime and left?
The people in the garden were shouting in excitement, breaking Emma’s trance. Suddenly, fireworks shot out to the sky and erupted in beautiful colors all throughout the city. Emma swallowed the lump in her throat. Ironic, that fireworks give off happiness, but all Emma could think of was that after it explodes, the sky would turn back to darkness.

Shadowhunters Short Story #41. Kitty mundane AU.
It is the middle of September 2014 and 16 year old Kit Herondale-Carstairs has abandoned his homework in favor of playing with his 5 month old sister Mina. Mina isn’t Kit’s biological sister, her parents Tessa and Jem Carstairs were friends with his parents, more specifically they were related to his mother some how, Tessa is her far out cousin or something like that. Kit’s mother Rosemary died shortly after he was born so he has absolutely no memories of her. His father Johnny was left to raise him alone and he wasn’t the best father, he never told Kit he loved him or made him feel safe and loved, he was always inviting shady suspicious people over to the house, Kit couldn’t know for sure but he was almost certain his father had been some sort of drug dealer or something. This time last year his dad had been killed by some other rival drug gang. For a few months Kit had been fostered by Andrew Blackthorn, where he met Andrew’s kids Helen, Mark, Julian, twins Ty and Livvy, Dru and Tavvy. He also met a girl named Emma Carstairs, who was also related to him somehow and good friends with The Blackthorns, she was also a far out cousin of Jem’s.
While staying with The Blackthorns Kit had become particularly close with the twins and Dru, especially Ty. After a few weeks of hanging around with the twins and getting to know them he realized he had a massive, massive crush on Ty. He had realized he is pansexual when he was about 14, but he thought he would always have to stay in the closet, his father didn’t seem to be the most accepting person in the world and would probably have sent him to conversion therapy or something awful like that. However when Kit found out that Helen is bisexual and engaged to a woman and that Mark is also bisexual and in a polyamorous relationship, Kit found the courage to confide in Ty that he is pansexual. To his surprise Ty then told him he’s gay but hasn’t told anyone. Kit was delighted that there was a chance Ty would like him back but he didn’t get his hopes up. Over the next few weeks they grew closer and closer until one day Ty randomly asked Kit if he’d like to go on a date with him. Kit was shocked but instantly agreed and not long after that they officially became a couple, though they didn’t tell anyone.
After a few weeks of staying with The Blackthorns Kit got a letter from Tessa and Jem Carstairs, explaining who they are and how they know Kit’s family and offering to meet him and offering for him to move in with them. At first Kit was hesitant but he agreed to at least meet them. They arrived at the Blackthorn's house a few days later and Kit was shocked to see how young they were, and that Tessa was visibly pregnant. They couldn’t be more than 25 and they were expecting their own child, Kit couldn’t understand why they would want a troubled broody teenager too.
However Tessa and Jem turned out to be two of the nicest people he had ever met and by the end of the meeting he found himself agreeing to move in with them. They didn’t live far from The Blackthorns so Kit could keep in touch with them, and he wouldn’t have to switch schools. School had become a lot more bearable now had friends, he and Ty had a lot of classes together and just sitting beside Ty made everything more bearable for Kit.
Kit didn’t tell Tessa and Jem about his relationship with Ty or his sexuality, he really wasn’t sure how they would react, he was terrified they would throw him out and be disgusted by him, so he kept quiet.
5 months after Kit moved in with Tessa and Jem, Tessa gave birth to a little girl that she and Jem named Wilhelmina Yiqang Ke Carstairs. At first Kit was very weary of the new baby, he wasn’t sure he could trust himself not to hurt her or say something stupid, but he had always adored her and after a few weeks his fears and worries melted away. Often when Kit got home from a bad day at school, he would drop his bag, pick up his baby sister and instantly feel better.
Right now Mina is just learning to roll, and Kit is trying to catch it on camera, but she seems to be camera shy. They are laying on the floor in her nursery which is right next door to Kit’s room. He had been doing his homework when he heard Mina babbling to herself, obviously awake from her nap, and decided to come in and play with her for a bit, he had told himself he would only play with her for half an hour, then he would take her to Jem and Tessa and go finish his homework, but it had been over an hour and Kit decided he could get up early in the morning and finish his homework.
“Come on Min-Min roll over, I know you can do it!” Kit encourages. Mina smiles widely at him but doesn’t budge. Kit grabs one of Mina’s favorite toys from her crib and places it behind her, hoping it will encourage her to roll. Mina gives Kit an unimpressed look and once again doesn’t budge. She is extremely stubborn, something Kit can relate to.
A few minutes later he hears the door to the nursery creek open and Mina’s face lights up.
“What are you two up to?” Tessa softly asks. She had been wondering why Mina had slept for an extra hour, it was so unlike her, but now she can see she hasn’t been asleep at all.
“I’m trying to get her to roll over but she just won’t.” Kit says.
“She will in her own time, aren’t you suppose to be doing homework?” Tessa asks, raising an eyebrow at Kit.
“I’ll finish it later.” Kit promises. Tessa and Jem aren’t extremely strict about Kit and his schoolwork but they do think it is very important for Kit to finish his homework, study and work really hard. Tessa is a qualified nurse and midwife though she’s currently on maternity leave, and Jem is a high school teacher who mainly teaches History and Music, thankfully though he doesn’t teach at the same high school Kit attended, that would have been mortifying.
“Are you having trouble with any of your subjects? Jem and I could help you and I’m sure Ty could too, you two certainly spend enough time together.” Tessa gently says, causing Kit to blush. Does she suspect that he and Ty are more than friends? He honestly can not keep living like this, constantly hiding his feelings and not being able to be him true self, he needs to come out to Jem and Tessa, if they kick him out he can probably move back in with The Blackthorns, Andrew had made it clear that he is always welcome there, and he would get to be with Ty more often.
“No it’s fine thanks.” Kit quietly replies, turning his attention back to Mina. If Jem and Tessa kick him out, he’ll miss this little one the most.
“Alright if you’re sure, dinner will be ready soon.” Tessa says, trying to hide the worry in her tone, she can tell something is off with Kit and that he wants to be alone right now.
When Tessa leaves the nursery Kit sighs and looks back to Mina. He pushes himself up from the floor, sitting back against the wall before he picks Mina up and balance her in his lap, which she loves. She is the sweetest, happiest little girl and makes Kit so happy, he has always wanted a little brother or sister, and Mina is the best he could ask for.
“Oh Mina I just don’t know what to do.” Kit quietly says, as Mina looks at him with her big brown eyes filled with curiosity. “I mean, I’m not ashamed of my sexuality at all, in fact I want to shout it from the rooftops. But at the same time I’m really scared about how Tessa and Jem are going to react, if they kick me out I won’t get to see you anymore Min-Min, and the thought of that just kills me. But I’m so tired of hiding who I am, Min, and I’m tired of hiding my relationship with Ty, I want to be out and open and honest but I’m scared, I’m so scared and I just don’t know what to do.” When Kit finishes his rant he is close to tears of frustration, then Mina smiles widely at him, her eyes lit up with joy, and he can’t hold the tears back anymore. He holds his sister tightly and closely and lets the tears pour down his face, knowing that he has to tell Tessa and Jem soon and there is every chance they will kick him out and he’ll be on his own again.
Little did he know that Tessa had heard every word he said, through the baby monitor.
Later that evening once they’ve all had dinner and Mina is down for the night, Kit works up the courage to tell Tessa and Jem the truth. He is nervous, more nervous than he’s ever been before, but he knows he can’t live a lie anymore. When he walks into the living room he finds Jem grading papers and Tessa reading The Handmaid’s Tale by Margret Atwood.
“Tessa, Jem.... can I talk to you for a bit?” Kit asks in a tone full of nerves. Tessa smiles brightly at him and sets her book aside.
“Of course, come sit down.”She says, patting the free seat next to her.
“Is everything alright?” Jem asks in a worried tone. He is always worried about his kids, he was a total mess throughout Tessa’s pregnancy, wanting to rush her to hospital every time she so much as flinched.
“I.... need to tell you something.” Kit quietly says, not meeting their eyes.
“You haven’t gotten someone pregnant have you?” Jem asks in a teasing tone, trying to lighten the mood. Kit gives a short laugh and quietly says
“No, that would be easier to tell you than what I’m about to say. I... don’t know how you’re going to feel about this, you’ll probably hate me and throw me out but... I.... well I’m not gay but I’m not straight either. I’m pansexual, I’m attracted to boys, girls, non-binary people... gender doesn’t play a part in my attraction to people and... right now I... I’m in a relationship with another boy.” Once Kit has finished his explanation, he buries his face in his hands in an attempt to cover up the fact that he’s started to cry.
“Oh Kit, baby don’t cry, come here my love.” Tessa softly says, pulling Kit into her arms, holding him tight and close. “Baby, look at me.”She softly adds, stroking Kit’s cheek with her thumb. Kit lifts his head from her chest, his blue eyes still filled with tears.
Before Tessa says anything, Jem gets up and sits on Kit’s other side, wrapping his arms around he and Tessa.
“Kit, my sweet boy, Jem and I don’t care about your sexuality, we could never hate you for something like that, especially when neither Jem nor I are straight either.” Tessa quietly says. Kit’s eyes widen with shock, this wasn’t something he was expecting her to say.
“Y-you’re not?”He stammers.
“No, Tessa is demisexual which means she only experiences attraction to people she knows well, and I’m bisexual.”Jem gently explains.
“So... you don’t hate me? You’re not going to throw me out?” Kit asks in a tearful tone.
“Of course not Kit, you’re our baby, our son, we would be disgusting awful parents if we stopped loving you because of your sexuality, we just want you to be happy and safe.” Tessa gently explains.
“I love you too, I’m so glad you don’t hate me, I didn’t want to leave.”Kit tearfully admits, wiping at his tears.
“You can live with us all your life if that’s what makes you happy.” Tessa gently says.
“So who’s this boy your seeing? Can we meet him?” Jem asks.
“I... well you see he’s not out yet and you know him, so I can’t tell you who it is but he’s wonderful and amazing and I love him.” Kit explains.
“I see, well as long as he treats you well and makes you happy then I’m happy.” Tessa says.
“I’m happy for you too Kit but know that I’m not going to stop worrying about you now and how your boyfriend is treating you, if he ever hurts you, you just come to me and I’ll deal with him okay?” Jem says in a serious tone. Kit laughs lightly and  says
“Yeah okay dad.” He freezes when he realizes what he’s just said. He always called Tessa and Jem by their names, even though they were very much like parents to him, this was the first time he had called Jem ‘dad’ and he hadn’t meant to. “I... is it okay if I call you dad?” Kit quietly asks.
“Only if I can call you Christopher.” Jem teases, knowing that Kit hates being called by his full name or any variation of it, though he himself thinks it is a wonderful name. Kit grins shyly at him and says
“You can call me Christopher once a day.” Jem grins at him and nods.
“Deal!”
The next day Kit leaves for school a bit earlier than usual so that he can walk by the Blackthorn's and wait for Ty who always left a bit earlier than his siblings. He wanted to tell Ty that he had come out and Tessa and Jem are so wonderful and understanding.
Kit gave Ty a quick text to let him know he would wait by his house to walk to school with him, just before he left. Now he has been standing outside The Blackthorn’s house for about ten minutes, waiting for Ty. As Kit runs through a mental list of all the exams he has coming up, he hears a door open and shut behind him, and he turns to see Ty walking toward him, his headphones around his neck, grinning at Kit. Ty is autistic and also has sensory processing disorder, meaning everything seems brighter, louder, stronger smelling, etc. for him. Sometimes it really overwhelms him, especially the loud noises, so he often wears headphones to block out the noise. Other kids in school are always laughing at him and making him the brunt of the joke but Ty always has someone to stand up for him, usually it’s Livvy and Ty in school, anywhere else it’s all of his siblings and his father who stand up for him and defended him.
“Hey.” Kit lightly says, as Ty reaches his side.
“Hi, I missed you.” Ty softly says, leaning in to give Kit a quick kiss.
“I missed you too, how was your weekend? Did you do anything interesting or fun?” Kit asks, as they link hands and set off down the road toward school.
“I came out to my family.” Ty says in a nonchalant tone, surprising Kit. As far as he was aware Ty had no plans to come out anytime soon.
“Really?”  Kit asks.
“Yeah, Helen and Aline set a wedding date and Mark’s going to be a dad, Cristina’s pregnant, I figured since there had already been two big announcements I might as well come out, I thought it might not seem such a big deal compared to Helen and Mark’s news.” Ty explains.
“So how did it go?” Kit curiously asks.
“Great, everyone was fine with it, Mark says he always knew I’m gay and so does dad, no one made a big deal out of it or anything which I’m really glad about. I told them I was dating someone but I didn’t tell them it was you because I know you aren’t out yet.” Ty tells him.
“Actually I am, now. I came out to Tessa and Jem last night and they were totally fine with it, they were really accepting. I told them I was dating someone too but I didn’t say it was you either because I thought you were still in the closet.” Kit says, laughing at the irony of it all.
“I’m okay with you telling Tessa and Jem you’re dating me, are you okay with me telling my family I’m dating you?” Ty asks.
“Yes of course! I want the whole world to know about us Ty, I love you so much and I want everyone to know it!” Kit exclaims.
“I love you too.” Ty quietly says, squeezing Kit’s hand softly.
“I knew it!” Comes a familiar female voice from behind them. Ty and Kit turn to see Livvy standing a few feet behind them, grinning triumphantly.
“Did you follow us?” Kit asks in a tone of astonishment. He never thought that anyone would follow them, especially not Livvy.
“That’s not important Christopher, what’s important is that you two are dating and I knew it all along!” Livvy exclaims, waving away Kit’s question.
“How did you know? I never told you.” Ty asks his twin, as she runs to catch up with them.
“You didn’t have to, it is so obvious just from the way you two look at each other, I remember mom and dad use to look at each other like that and Helen and Aline look at each other the same way, also Kit’s whole face turns red every time your name is brought up Ty, also through our twin bond I can feel the love you have for him!” Livvy exclaims in a smug tone.
“No you can’t, that’s not a thing.” Ty says in an amused tone.
“Ty! Shut up, you ruined it! I was trying to freak Kit out!” Livvy says in an amused tone.
“That’s not very nice.” Ty lightly says, looping his free arm through Livvy’s.
“It’s also not very nice to keep secrets from your twin! When are you two going to tell everyone else?” Livvy curiously asks. Ty and Kit share a look and Kit says
“Today? I can come around to yours after school and when we’ve told your family Ty, you can come back to mine and we can tell Tessa and Jem.” Ty nods and says
“Okay, sounds good to me.”
“Hey you two should have a double wedding with Helen and Aline!” Livvy chirps.
“We’re 16 Liv, we can’t legally get married. Also we’ve only been together a few months, it’s a bit soon for marriage.” Kit says in an amused tone.
“Details details Christopher, I’m going back to the house to get my bag, you two go on with me but don’t get up to anything too crazy.” Livvy says, winking at them before turning and running back to the house.
“I think she’s more invested in our relationship than us.” Kit jokingly says.
“She’s just excited for us, for me, she’s really happy I’m out now and that I’m happy with you, it’s rather sweet.” Ty says in a tone of affection.
“I’m happy you’re happy with me too, I love you.” Kit quietly says, pausing at the side of a shop and pulling Ty closer to him.
“I love you too.” Ty quietly says, running his fingers through Kit’s thick blonde hair.
“Kiss me.” Kit quietly says. And he does, and Kit never wants him to stop and Ty doesn’t want to stop either, and that is how a few minutes later they decide to bunk off school and spend the day together, finally being able to be their true selves.

This is a fic I wrote as part of a collab with @ribbitsplace . I then also pulled in @thepurplewarlock , because I’ve never worked with her before, and I also really needed someone to help motivate me to write this. Thank you so much for helping Becca!! The timeline doesn’t really matter, but I guess you can imagine it takes place some time after Mark returns, but before LoS. So I hope you all enjoy some cute Julian and Mark!
Julian was not a very optimistic person, so when Mark got sick, his first thoughts were rather cynical. However, Julian's life had taught him to find pleasure in the smallest things, so at least he could enjoy the simple blessing that of all the times Mark could have gotten sick it was this rather uneventful week.
Of course, it didn't remain uneventful for long, although it was a different kind of chaotic Jules was used to. It was the kind of chaotic that reminded him of the scene in the first Harry Potter movie when it rained Hogwarts letters. Not that he had seen that movie, of course. He was a shadowhunter; they weren't even supposed to be aware of pop culture. But as he saw The List turn up seemingly everywhere, he was reminded more and more of that one scene in Harry Potter.
The List was a phenomenon started by the two youngest Blackthorn sisters when Mark returned from Faerie. Essentially, it was a list of all the big things in pop culture that Mark had missed in his five years away. The original copy of The List hung by Mark’s door, a pen hanging by it so anyone could add to it. There was also a digital copy though, that he often saw Livvy update on her phone. It was printed out versions of this digital copy that had seemed to turn up everywhere Julian was these past few days, since Mark had become ill.
So here he stood, outside Mark's door, the laptop Livvy had given him for his birthday in his hand. He was scanning The List, but he already knew his starting point. If he was going to do this, he might as well get as much fun as possible out of it himself. He would enjoy this, and Livvy’s face when she heard would be even better.
He threw open the door and felt his features morph into the easy expression he put up around the younger ones. Yet he couldn't hide the worry that flickered across his face when he saw Mark, pale skin almost translucent, sweating in his bed.
“Guess what? We're making a start on The List! Up first, the MCU. And you get to watch the best one first, lucky you,” he grinned.
Julian settled himself next to his brother on the bed, careful not to disturb him too much. When their arms brushed, Julian felt Mark burn, and suppressed the uneasy shiver that went through them. It was just the flu. Understandable, since Mark had spent so long in such a different environment.
“Alright, Mark, you are about to experience the wonder that is Iron Man. Enjoy!” He pulled the laptop towards him, set the movie up, and hit play.
Mark was completely entranced by the movie, and Julian couldn't quite tell whether he was surprised or not. He thought the...old Mark would have been into the technology and the fight scenes, but the Mark that had returned from Faerie did not quite get along with anything too modern. He seemed to grow fond of Tony throughout the movie though, and had admitted to being in awe of Pepper.
Whatever the reason was, Julian was pleased. Another Blackthorn on his side in this endless discussion of “who's the best avenger?”. Never mind that Mark hadn't quite seen the other avengers yet.
Jules pulled the computer towards himself and started setting up the next movie. He smiled to himself as he saw what it was. Mark had only just missed this movie as well. It had provided a momentary distraction for the Blackthorns after the Dark War.
“Another movie?” Mark said when he saw the High School Musical: Senior Year poster appear on screen.
“You do realise there six movies in the MCU that I could have made you watch, right? Because that's what the list says: watch all MCU movies. It also says you have to take Livvy and Dru to Iron Man 3 next year, but that's not the point. Honestly, you should be happy we only watched the first Iron Man.”
At that moment Livvy ran past Mark's open door, but she stopped dead in her tracks when she heard the conversation going on inside. “What? You only showed him Iron Man?” Livvy sounded incredulous. “And then you'd try to tell us Iron Man is his favourite avenger, right? Because he doesn't know any others.”
Jules was torn between defending himself and… well, not lying. Because he had kind of been thinking that.
“I did like Tony Stark. He reminds me a little of you, Jules. And Emma, because he's all,” Mark made some vague hand movement that looked like it cost him all of his energy, “funny and sarcastic.” The rest of his words came out slurred, a sure sign of the effort it cost him in his state.
Mock rage barely concealed Julian’s smile. “Are you saying I'm not funny?”
Mark grumbled in return, which really could have meant anything. A laugh escaped Julian and he let his hands come through Mark’s sweaty curls as if he were Tavvy. Looking up, he saw Livvy still leaning against the door frame, smiling softly. When he caught her eye she came over and pressed a kiss to Mark's head.
“Another movie sounds like a great idea. A good way to rest a while. I recommend the first Cap movie,” she grinned.
“Sorry, no can't do. I promised Dru I'd take Tavvy off her hands for a while, so we're watching the third High School Musical. It's on the list as well so you can't argue.” Livvy laughed but didn’t argue as she disappeared out the door.
“Dru's not watching with us?” Marks eyes were big, as if suddenly surprised. “But these are her movies!”
And all of a sudden, Julian was transported to the past. To simpler times, when Mark was the older brother. When Julian’s only job was to annoy Mark and tease Emma. He saw Mark in front of the TV, a young Dru bouncing on his knee as they watched High School Musical. In the memory Julian could see Mark mouthing along to the words and he could practically hear Dru's blabbering. They had all watched those movies a million times with Dru. Mark was right, these were her movies.
Right that moment, Dru materialised in the doorframe, Tavvy beside her. She was clearly about to run off when Mark asked her to stay. Julian saw the conflict on her face: the horror movie she was going to watch versus a sick Mark and High School Musical, which Jules knew she still has a soft spot for. Eventually she joined her three brothers on the bed.
They barely all fit on the bed and Mark’s skin was uncomfortably hot against  his own while on his other side Tavvy couldn’t seem to sit still. Yet the four of them seemed to be transformed to a happier place while sitting there. A place where Mark wasn’t sick, Helen was closer, demons didn’t exist… Tavvy tried to sing along though he barely knew the lyrics, and Julian definitely didn’t miss Dru mouthing all the words to the songs. He knew a smile was plastered on his own face, though whether because of the movie or his family, he couldn’t quite tell.
Once the movie had finished and Julian had sent Tavvy and Dru off to get themselves some lunch, Jules made a point out of giving Mark a dose of all the flu medicine he’d gotten together. He still looked rough, but he seemed better than he had done that morning and his skin burned a little less. Mark had made a half-hearted attempt to argue he felt good enough to return to daily business, but one raised eyebrow from Jules had sent him back to bed. Julian scoffed; Mark could barely stand. Besides, there were still some things on The List he wanted to work through. Checking his sisters’ list to see what he still needed to introduce to his brother, he smiled slightly on seeing that the next thing on his list was silly bandz.
Thankfully he’d bought a few packs for Tavvy recently, who’d become fascinated with them since they had become suddenly popular. Not wanting to give them all to his youngest sibling at once, he’d put some aside, which turned out to be an even better decision than he had originally realised once he thought of how excited Mark would be opening a new pack. Excusing himself to go grab a few, he quickly returned to Mark with a collection of different packs.
Mark glanced over to Jules as he stepped back into the room. “So what is the next thing our sisters have decided I need to catch up on?” he asked smiling, before breaking into a fit of coughs. Jules patted him on the back carefully, waiting until the coughing had resided before throwing a packet at him. Mark picked a packet up, confusion clear on his face.
“They’re called silly bandz,” Jules explained. Of course, that didn’t really do anything to ease Mark’s confusion, which, despite himself, made Jules smile slightly. “Open the packet,” was all he said.
Mark did as told, and dropped the contents into his hand. The assortment of brightly coloured, differently shaped bands seemed to do little to impress Mark though, and Julian had to suppress a grin as Mark picked one up and inspected it closely. It was very obvious that Mark didn’t seem all that impressed, so Jules decided to play the sibling card. “Before you pass judgement, you ought to know that your youngest brother is obsessed with them, and two of your sisters wanted to make sure you experienced them.”
That seemed to do it for Mark, and he picked out a few green and red ones to put on his wrist, before asking “Then why are you not wearing any, brother?”
Jules couldn’t help but kick himself for thinking he had gotten away with it. So far Tavvy hadn’t asked, which Julian was thankful for. He knew that if he ever put one on, he wouldn’t be able to take it off until Tavvy got over his silly bandz phase, both because he would ask Jules where the bands had disappeared to and because Jules knew he wouldn’t have the heart to take them off in the first place. He sighed and held his own packet up, as if to say “mine are here”. Mark raised an eyebrow at Jules, making it very clear that he would not let the matter drop until he’d put his own coloured bands on his own wrist. Yes, his siblings could be a little strange or persistent or weird or even annoying, but Jules wouldn’t change them for the world.
“Do we have any more on The List for today, or were these band things the last of what Livvy and Dru wanted me to catch up on?” Mark asked, satisfied with the fact Jules was now also wearing the colourful monstrosities on his wrist.
“No, there is one more thing...” Jules said half reluctantly, torn between laughing and sighing. “They….they want you to listen to Justin Bieber.”
Mark caught on to his brother’s hesitation. “Is that such a bad thing?” asked Mark and Julian grimly nodded.
“Wait till you hear it day in day out when Livvy is in one of her moods. Or even better, when Emma plays it non-stop. But I'll let you make up your own mind,” Jules said before pulling his phone out and going onto YouTube.
He got through three songs before Mark had decided he agreed with his brother and asked Jules to stop the music, much to Jules’ delight. “I think I am too used to faerie music,” Mark admitted before coughing again. Jules knew of faerie music and what it could do to someone, and if Mark seemed to prefer that over Bieber, then that had to mean something.
“Livvy and Dru are both quite taken by him. And for some reason so is Emma, and the rest of the world. Thank the angel no-one this house is a super fan, but Dru has shown me videos.” Jules said, and Mark somehow seemed to look even more unwell.
“Once I am better we must rescue them before their brains turn to mush,” Mark said and Jules couldn't quite tell if he was joking, being dramatic or being dead serious. Either way, he thought it might be the best thing he’d heard all day. “I’d like that, Mark,” was all he said, but he was grinning.
Having gone through everything on The List that he had meant to, Jules decided to let Mark sleep. Despite Mark’s protests, he was still ill and needed to get better soon. Not that Julian would mind another day like this. Especially the movies had brought back memories of his family, happy and at ease, and best of all he was creating more of those memories.
A quick check on Mark ten minutes later showed Jules that his older brother was fast asleep. He’d enjoyed spending time with Mark, but it was more than that as well. He had needed a day like this, enjoying himself. He thanked Mark for giving it to him in his head, and quietly sent out a quick thanks to Livvy and Dru as well for the crazy List. He made a silent promise to both himself and Mark that he’d try and make more of an effort to spend more time with him, not as Shadowhunters but as brothers.

Idk if you’re still taking prompts but Helen and Aline taking care of a baby and them being the cute couple-ly Mum goals please. Just heline with babies thanks
here you are love, so sorry for the wait on this xx
Years ago, Aline would have never imagined herself having a child.
Deep in her teenage torment days, she had always supposed that she would only ever have a child for her parents sake more than her own.
Somewhere down the line, that opinion had shifted, although when it had been exactly was unclear. Aline thought perhaps it had been when she and Helen had exchanged family rings, sipping rosé wine on a blanket under the Los Angeles stars on a beach all to themselves. Aline had envisioned their futures together while her fingers traced the engravings of the Blackthorn family ring on her hand, familiarizing herself with the feel of it.
Or, maybe it had been when Drusilla clung to her hips the day she had been due to leave back to Idris and made Aline promise to come back as soon as possible, because she adored Aline and loved to have someone new listen to her stories. Or the time Helen had woken her up from where she had fallen asleep on the couch, Tavvy napping in her arms, and commented how great Aline was with kids despite her initial skepticism.
Maybe, Aline considered, it had been Magnus and Alec and their little family together. She had seen the look in Magnus’ eyes when he was with Rafael and Max, pure adoration, and she had seen the way Alec’s mood seemed to shift - as if the weight of his life had been lifted off of his chest, making way for something much lighter, and happier.
Whichever it may have been, or a combination of them all, Aline was eternally glad that her perspective on becoming a mother had changed.
It was Aline’s cousin, Vivianne, who had reached out to catch up and, in casual conversation, mentioned that the Academy had just received a recently orphaned girl from the Istanbul Institute. She was young at only five years old; too young for training, and with no living relatives left to take her in, the Academy was looking to place her in the care of another Institute. Vivianne had also offhandedly mentioned that she was a sweet girl, smart for her age, and that Aline would, as she put it, “fall in love” with her.
Aline relayed the information to Helen the same night, and then they were portaling to Idris the next morning.
There had not been much of a discussion. Helen and Aline were more or less on the same wavelength as one another, able to detect what the other was feeling by just looking into each others eyes. It was an unspoken agreement: they were ready to go from two, to three. They were ready.
Vivianne had been right, of course, and even bounced on the balls of her feet when Aline had told her so.
Her name was Alya, and she was pure radiance, a sun that radiates warmth that Aline could hold in her arms and hug tight and kiss without the fear of getting burned from it. Aline understood, in that moment when Helen knelt down to her eye level and Alya gave a shy smile and brushed Helen’s hair away to see the elven curve of her ears, the change in Magnus and Alec with their sons.
Fifteen year old Aline would have laughed and said: “no way am I going to be responsible for another human being,” if asked about children. Would have laughed harder at the idea of being called a mother.
Twenty-six year old Aline stood smiling softly in a doorway, watching on as her daughter gave her wife eskimo kisses and murmured nonsensical words she always expected to be said back to her. It had become something of a nightly ritual over the past year.
“Okay, okay,” Aline announced as she entered the bedroom, carrying with her a small collection of mundane children’s books she found stashed away in the Institute’s library, which Julian mentioned were once Tavvy’s. She sat at the other side of the bed, sharing a knowing smile with Helen before addressing their daughter. “It’s getting late and I still owe you a story, princess.”
And she did. Alya got cranky otherwise, and that usually meant for nightmares.
Alya beamed over at her, clapping her tiny hands together excitedly - which meant either Kit or Emma had snuck her sweets before bed and she was still riding out the sugar rush. Aline made a mental note to question them about that later. “Can I pick the story tonight, mommy?”
“Just one this time,” Aline said firmly but affectionately, laying the selection out before her.
“Then it’s bedtime for you,” Helen added, quickly tickling Alya’s sides which elicited a peel of high-pitched giggles as she pressed a myriad of kisses on her small tan cheeks.
Afterward, Alya got to work deciding which story she wanted to be told, her face the picture of concentration. Aline and Helen called it her ‘serious business’ face, because of the way her brows would furrow, her mouth set in a thin line, and her tiny fingers at her chin.
“I want this one,” Alya determined at last, pointing at a book with fairies - not to be confused with actual faeries - on the cover. “‘Cause they have pointy ears just like Mama’s.”
“Excellent choice,” said Helen as Alya leaned back, tucking the blanket around her with a smug little grin.
Once she was settled in, Aline handed her wife the other books and cleared her throat.
By the time she finished the story, the sugar high had surpassed and Alya was struggling to keep her eyes open. Helen, who had moved to sit beside Aline to put her arm around her waist, smiled softly. “Ready to sleep, baby?”
“Mhm,” Alya hummed, snuggling further into her pillows.
Aline closed the book and took one of Alya’s hands to give it a kiss. She had taken to giving the palms of her hands little kisses before she slept to will the possibility of nightmares away, a small non verbal reminder that she was loved, and it delighted her when Alya begun to do the same thing. She’d stayed up gushing about it with Helen all night, similar to how they had when she first called them ‘mommy’ and ‘mama.’
“Goodnight, little one,” Aline said.
“Night, mommies,” Alya murmured groggily, voice slurred with sudden exhaustion. Aline knew she would be sleeping within minutes.
Helen turned off the lamp light on the bedside table and the two got up to leave, hands entwined simply for the sake of just touching, closing the door quietly behind them.
*fun fact, I personally don’t imagine them having kids, but this was cute and writing it might have swayed me a little. thank you for the prompts, I hope I did them justice :)
*Alya (ah-lee-uh) means ‘sky’ or ‘heaven’ in Arabic, according to wikipedia. for Livia
*I was just going to make this a quick little cute scene but I’m meticulous and needed to create an entire backstory before I could continue lmao I’m sorry

Daisy’s birthday
This part of the series of TDA children I am working on with @readwriteswim I hope you like it. It was a lot of fun to write as Emily, you have the best ideas and I love collabing with you so much. If anyone has any ideas they want to see, please do let us know
With Daisy soon turning sixteen, Kieran was sure his daughter was going to have a celebration worthy of the significance of the event. Daisy allowed him to do what he wished, as she could see the joy it brought to the father she loved so dearly. The result of Kieran’s planning was a ball in faerie. Daisy felt it a little excessive, not that she’d tell her father of course.
Excessive or not, Daisy was very excited for the celebration. She loved being in faerie, and was looking forward to being there with all of her family. Other faeries, a combination of faeries of the court, and friends of Daisy. It was also the first time in a long time her entire family had been together all at once, and that thought alone made Daisy unbearably happy.
Kieran had kept his secrets about the ball a surprise until he brought his family to the clearing it would be held. He’d told that there had been a theme, and only now did Daisy realise what it was: she was the theme. Daisy flowers were everywhere and Daisy found herself letting out a breath she hadn’t known she had been holding. She turned to Kieran with wide eyes going “Papa, it is beautiful” before hugging him.
Slowly, guests started arriving, and Daisy greeted every single one. Daisy hadn’t notice the first of her family arrived until she heard an excited squeal and her overly excited cousin Milly launched herself at her. It took everything Daisy had not to fall over, but she still found herself laughing at her cousin’s enthusiasm. Looking over Milly’s shoulder, she noticed Milly’s twin Caleb with their parents, Daisy’s Uncle Jules and Aunt Emma. Daisy beamed as she hugged them all. Milly then grabbed a large wrapped rectangle and gave it to Daisy before jumping up and down clapping her hands going “open it, open it, open it”.
Daisy frowned, she had planned to open most of her presents later, when the ball was over and only her nearest and dearest were left. “Now?” she found herself asking and it was her Aunt who answered. “Of course, we want to see your reaction” she said, and glanced a small knowing smile at her husband. Curiosity getting the better of her, she opened the present and gasped at what was underneath the paper.
It was a painting of Daisy. She was laughing with her brothers, her arms round their waists. It was beautiful and she had no words. What Milly said next hit her with a lot of feelings. “Dad and I worked on it together” and she just stared at my cousin and Uncle, before she managed to get out a “Thank you” before finding herself in a family hug. Once they broke, she had wanted to talk more before she was informed that more of my family had arrived. She was joined by Mark and Alfie, who clung to Marks side to welcome Helen and Aline.
Helen stepped forward and hugged Daisy, before taking a step back and cupped her face. “Happy Birthday my dear niece. I swear you get more beautiful every time I see you” and it looked as though she had wanted to say more before being pushed towards her brother by her wife, allowing Aline to greet the birthday girl, and reminding Daisy why she loved her Aunts so much.
Daisy then found herself greeting some more guest, and some of her close friends who were all incredibly jealous, asking if Kieran could plan their birthdays, with Daisy shrugging saying “perks of having a prince for a father”. It was then she noticed the latest arrivals. Livvy was the aunt everyone wanted to have, and she’d always had a soft spot for her Uncle Max. Daisy couldn’t help but notice Alfie slip over and take her cousins Sophia and Xander before she could say hello, leaving her with her Aunt, Uncle, and her cousin Robin, not that she minded of course. Livvy however it seemed did mind, watching her children going “nice of them to greet the birthday girl before running off”.
Daisy just shrugged then going “It’s just nice to see Alfie somewhere that isn’t mine or Dad’s side at a gathering”. Livvy understood the sisterly concern Daisy had for her youngest brother, knowing what Alfie was like in crowds. Daisy glanced t her cousin going “Jordan is around somewhere. He’s missed you terribly” which made Robin smile, as he walked off. Turning back to her Aunt she said “Uncle Ty isn’t hear yet” which made Livvy smile. “I assume that husband had something to do with it” she said before linking arms with her own husband and walking off, having spotted Jules and Emma in the crowd.
Daisy smiled as she watched them go. She hadn’t noticed someone walk up behind her, till a set of arms wrapped around her middle, and a voice went “happy birthday beautiful” before a kiss was pressed to her neck. Daisy felt a blush creep into her cheeks as she craned her head to see her girlfriend standing behind her. “Hey” was all she managed to get out. She went to say more but it seemed her parents choice that precise moment to join the birthday girl. Daisy and Anabla took an awkward step away from each other, clearly embarrassed. “When do we get to meet your girlfriend?” Kieran asked, his eyebrow raised.
Somehow Daisy managed to regain herself enough to go “Mama, Papa, Dad this is my girlfriend Anabla (who gave a curtsy at her name), Anabla these are my parents” she said, with no idea how things were going to turn out. Again it was Kieran who spoke. “My daughter speaks very highly of you, it’s an honor to meet you at last” which made Anabla blush even more. “Your highness it is a privlage to meet you, to meet all of you” she managed to get out. Thankfully the awkwardness came to an end.
Julian had noticed one of the curtains seemed different and he pulled it aside and pulled out Kit and Ty, saying “haha let’s guess why you were late haha” causing both boys were blushing like it was no ones business. Daisy raised an eyebrow going "really?? You make out at my birthday party??". Anabla giggled slightly causing Daisy to gently kiss her girlfriend. Kit raised an eyebrow in return before retaliating “really daisy? You can and we can’t??” Daisy shrugged then, before going "it's my birthday I can do what I want. Plus my father is a prince might I remind you" before turning on her heal and leaving, her girlfriends arm linked with hers.
It was as they were walking off they noticed Daisy’s Aunt Dru, followed by ‘her boys’ (otherwise known as Jaime and Ash) had arrived. Dru walked over saying “I do apologize for being late, these two had one of their disagreements and well, you know what they can be like” which made Daisy smile. She had always had a soft spot for her. It was then the music started, and Dru was lead by the boys for a dance. Daisy smiled as she watched them go.
The last of Daisy’s Blackthorn part of the family was her Uncle Tavvy, who had brought his new girlfriend Rylie. She’d met his family individually but this was her first family gathering, and naturally she looked nervous. Daisy did her best to make her feel welcome before Tavvy pulled her into a dance. Anabla looked at Daisy going “dance with me m’lady” and who was Daisy to refuse? Of course Anabla got the most dances with Daisy, but that wasn’t to say that graced her friends and family with dances. There had been a particularly precious moment when Daisy had been dancing with Kieran. He’d said “look at you all grown up my sweet girl. I still remember the day you were born. You were beautiful then but you are so much more beautiful now. I am so proud of you” and Daisy had smiled then. “Thank you. I love you Papa” was all she managed to say.
The light’s had dimmed and the focus had turned to the small stage where the band had been playing. The fae that had been playing earlier had gone, and Daisy found herself staring, mouth open at the people that were in their place. Sophia had taken a seat behind the piano, with Alfie standing behind the microphone, Xander standing next to his cousin. “Um, hi everyone, I’m Alfie….Daisy’s younger brother, and these are Xander and Sophia, our cousins but I guess you already knew that” Alfie started, the nerves obvious in his voice. A slight laugh rang out over the audience, but Daisy realised they weren’t laughing at Alfie, rather with him.
“As you all know, the reason you are all here is because it’s Daisy’s sixteenth birthday. And my family can tell you I’m terrible at both talking about my feelings, and giving presents. I’m working on it, which is why I’m sharing my birthday present with you, it’s a song I wrote about the best big sister anyone could ask for, I hope you enjoy it” and with that Alfie stepped away from the mic, allowing Xander to take his place as he practically ran off stage to hide behind Mark, who put a protective arm around him. And then the song started, and for Daisy, the world seemed to disappear as she listened to the song written about her.
Daisy hadn’t known Alfie wrote songs, which was a shame, as the song her cousins were playing on stage was beautiful. By the time it had finished, and the audience broke into thunderous applause, Daisy realised she had been crying. She didn’t try and dry the tears on her cheeks as she walked straight up to him, pulling him for a hug going “that was so amazing. Thank you”. She could feel her brother shrug as he hugged her back before saying "it was Sophia and Xander really. They performed it" which made Daisy break from the hug and scowl at her brother. "And had you not written anything they would have nothing to perform. It was beautiful Alfie" he exclaimed, and Alfie had been about to argue when their cousins arrived and, to Alfie’s annoyance decided to side with Daisy.
Xander and Sophia had stayed to argue with Alfie, to demand he took credit for his talents as Daisy hunted down her Kieran. She spotted him, near the back. She simply hugged him tightly going “Thank you for such a wonderful birthday party Papa. I enjoyed myself so much” which made Kieran smile. All he wanted was to make his daughter happy, his children happy but Daisy had always been his little girl, no matter how old she was. “I am glad you enjoyed yourself” was all he said.

“Please stay with me tonight, I don’t want to be alone.”
Featuring: Kit and Ty
Requested by @eternalstorming || I included a couple more characters. Hope you don’t mind :)
Okay. First of all, Kit was not scared of horror films. At all. Those high-pitched squeals you heard from him—excitement. Him covering his eyes half the time—he was thinking of scarier stuff in his mind, ‘cause the movie was too tame. And every time he yelled, “Ty-Ty, help me!"—he wanted Ty to drag him away from the screen for the movie had bored him to death. So like Kit says; he’s totally not scared of horror films. Or at least that’s what he told everyone else. To his dismay, no one was buying it.
Dru called from the living room, "Laaaaaame”, as Kit exited the living room.
Kit retorted, “Oh shush. That movie’s not scary.”
Diana sat with Gwyn and Dru on the couch. She muttered, “You know he might be saying the truth, Drusilla. After he’s seen his grades, I don’t think anything could frighten him.”
Kit just sighed and stepped out. Then he remembered that it was three in the morning and the only light on in the Institute came from a TV Dru was playing. And there was no way he was going back in that room. He could’ve turned on some lights but he didn’t want to bother anyone sleeping.
So he made the only logical choice he could think up— run to his room as if somebody was chasing him. Of course he could’ve calmly walked to his room but where’s the fun in that?
He frowned. Then bolted down the hall, up the stairs, and he came in contact with a strange figure. He didn’t mean to scream, he really didn’t but it just came out.
Soon, room lights came on and Julian leaped out with a blade. Emma clutched Cortana. Both in rumpled pajamas. Kit, in the midst of the confusion, thought Did they just come out of the same room? But he only blinked. Tavvy was awake too.
When the parabatai sensed no danger they put away their weapons and frowned at Kit.
Kit immediately apologized, “I’m sorry. I really am. Please don’t kill me.”
Julian shook his head, “Why were you screaming in the first place?”
Dru cut in from downstairs, “Because he watched a scary movie and now he’s paranoid.”
Diana also cut in, “You ruined the main character’s screaming with your screaming, Christopher.”
Julian and Emma sighed and shut the door. Yeah, they definitely stayed in the same room.
Tavvy spat, “Meanie. Ty, tell him you don’t want to be friends anymore”, and with that he went back to bed.
Kit looked at the figure he bumped into. Tiberius had his headphones on crooked and his hair was disheveled.
Kit’s mouth went dry. He croaked shamefully, “Did I hurt you, Ty? I’m so so sorry. I—”
Tiberius interrupted, “I’m fine. I came to return your electronic tablet.” He offered it to Kit. Ty was using it because the one computer in the Institute was broken, no one knew how to fix it, and it’s not like they could call a guy. Well they could but it’d be embarrassing. Excuse me, but why should I open my window? What does this have to do with my computer?
Ty continued, “You weren’t in your room so I was going to leave it outside your door. But you’re here now so…”
Ty seemed achingly uncomfortable. Kit wanted to apologize a million times over, each time sappier than the last but he wouldn’t. Ty didn’t want that. Kit followed the path of his slate gray eyes. In fact, he wanted something else.
“Ty? Do you want to keep using my tablet?”, Kit asked cautiously.
Something in Ty’s eyes sparked. “Yes, actually. I found this really cool nature documentary on rhinos. And this other one featured cute little bumblebees. Did you know a queen bee can lay up to 2000 eggs a day?”
“I did not know that. Wanna go watch them in my room? I’m not tired. Are you?” Kit held a shy smile. Was he really inviting someone into his room? That someone being Tiberius Blackthorn? Kit felt like screaming again but he did it internally that time.
Ty knit his brows, “How can I be tired when the bees need saving? And yes, I’d like to watch.” He pulled the tablet out of Kit’s hand and flopped onto the Herondale’s bed like he owned it. Ty did own Kit’s heart so his bed wasn’t much in comparison.
Kit shut the door as Ty pulled up the videos. The Blackthorn was in pajamas he was quickly outgrowing. His onyx locks were damp from a recent shower and his eyelashes were impossibly long. His lips in the state of a hard, pink line. Kit’s heart fluttered and he might’ve died for a second when he sat remotely next to Ty.
Ty looked up from the screen, slightly bashful. “Can you see from there?” Kit sat a meter away from his friend. “You can come closer if you want.”
Gingerly, Kit filled in the space between him and Ty until he could feel Ty’s hair tickle his ear. Which meant Ty could feel Kit’s body move at every outburst.
When the documentaries were over, Kit wiped away a stray tear, “It’s just…rhinos get poached and the bees are dying?”
He looked beside him to see a dozing Tiberius Blackthorn; Kit resisted the urge to kiss him. As he was about to step out Ty sat up.
“Please stay with me tonight, I don’t want to be alone.”
Kit blinked about twenty times and finally answered, “But I ruined everyone’s night. Your family hates me and you’re tired of me.”
Ty shook his head vigourosly. “You didn’t ruin my night; that I know. And my family doesn’t hate you. You just bothered them. They’ll be over it by morning. We’ve all done it.”
Ty gazed at his bare feet and picked at Kit’s sheets. “Plus, the only thing that tired me is my lack of sleep. Not you, never you.”
Kit was dumbfounded yet he managed to turn off the lights, climb into bed, and curl up with the boy he loved.

Alec mentoring Julian...
One of the things I really liked about LoS is that Alec and Magnus really stepped up to the plate to help the Blackthorns. They were busy with their own lives in NY, raising a family, running the Alliance, dealing with Magnus’ sickness: and they basically dropped everything to go to London. Alec didn’t want to be a temporary head, but he did it to help the kids.
I had a hard time understanding Alec during TMI, maybe it was because he was a secondary character, or that Cassie was new to writing—but I feel like I didn’t really start to understand his potential beyond an angst ridden gay teenager, second fiddle to Jace Herondale, until the end of COHF. And I loved him in Born to Endless Night.
I’ve also thought a lot about Julian, and the fact that he had no male role models after the Dark War (with maybe the exception of Malcolm Fade-eek!). Alec has something in common with Julian, in the loss of a sibling, so I wrote this scene because Julian has been so alone in everything, and Alec can finally be a kind of older brother he never got to be with Max.
It takes place after Alec suggests a training session with Julian, and is an excerpt from my longer fanfic piece: Rise From the Ashes http://archiveofourown.org/works/11570598/chapters/25997274
“Helen, Mark give me a couple minutes with Julian, ok?” Alec asked while drawing another iratze on his inner arm. Alec mopped off a run of blood on the side of his face as if it were a normal part of practice. His eye was swollen too.  A long looked passed between him and Helen. Sometimes Julian forgot they were the same age now, that they’d fought together at the Battle of the Burren and Brocelind Plain during the Mortal War. Somewhere in Julian’s mind Helen stopped ageing when she left. He kept expecting her to be eighteen again. She nodded, deferring to Alec’s judgement, which Julian thought quite stupid and led Mark off. Magnus followed.
Julian was still riding high from adrenaline and something else. “I’m sorry,” Julian mumbled. “I let my emotions get away from me. That was a tactical mistake.”
Alec barked with an unexpected laugh. “You obviously haven’t spent enough time around Jace if you think that is the definition of letting your emotions get away from you.”
Alec paused collecting his thoughts—or gearing up for something. Julian felt himself stiffen as his stomach curled in anticipation at whatever this ‘talk’ was supposed to be about. “Fighting in the last two wars, on Edom—that was hard. Sometimes fighting demons now seems too easy in comparison. This wasn’t easy, and maybe I forgot what that was like.”
“You’re a good fighter. Really good. Emma has the reputation, but you fly under the radar. With her being your parabatai you have to be as good as her. I might know something about what that’s like,” he gave Julian a quirky, reassuring grin. “Look, I brought you out here because, well—“ Alec paused, suddenly looked uncomfortable. “People are going to tell you they understand what you’re going through, and it’s the worst thing to hear. But, in this case, I think I do. I lost my brother Max when he was only a little older than Tavvy. We left him alone in a house with Sebastian and he killed him.”
Alec face turned stony, the blue eye that hadn’t swollen shut hardened at a memory clearly haunting him. It had been five years for him, but Julian could tell he still grieved. Maybe he had learned to live with it, but his world had been changed as much as Julian’s.
“When we found Max’s body, he was clutching this little toy soldier that Jace had given him. It was strange how seeing that soldier broke us. The fact that we weren’t there to protect him, should have been there, and it was all he could hold onto when he died.”
“Are you going to tell me it’s not my fault?” Julian whispered.
“Blame is a game full of what ifs that no one can change. You’re human so you’ll play it, but you can’t let it drag you down—there’s too much else going on. Look, a Council meeting should have been a safe place. A room filled with Shadowhunters, in the heart of Idris? Annabel shouldn’t have even been able to do it. Everybody was blindsided. My dad had decades more experience at fighting: battles and politics, and he died too.”
Julian felt like an ass. When Robert had died, Julian’s foremost thought was how his death wrecked his plans with Emma and the scrambled rush to find an alternative. He hadn’t even given the most basic condolences, because Alec had lost his father too.
Alec had stepped up to help his family, arranging their safety here, never stopping doing what needed to be done, all the while dealing with his father’s death.  And here the other man was trying to offer him comfort. His own father had been Julian’s best guidance and he understood what it felt like to have that ripped away—to be suddenly alone in the world. Alec was years older, a father himself and Julian imagined it was probably just as hard for him now. Maybe there wasn’t even a difference at what age or stage of life that kind of loss happened at.
“I’m sorry,” Julian said sincerely, but maybe he could give Alec something small. “It might surprise you to know that Emma and I found ourselves on the outside of some of the Clave laws.”
Alec snorted at that. “I might have found myself there a time or two as well.”
“Before the meeting, we’d gone to your dad—as Inquisitor.” Julian felt that carefulness unfurl. Emma said the Silent Brothers already knew and their secret was out to the Clave, but he couldn’t break the almost compulsion to keep that secret—even though Alec would know soon enough. If not from Magnus than from the Clave itself. “We told him some things. He listened and was willing to help us. I’m sorry he’s gone now too.”
Alec looked at him like he’d grown two heads. “Why the hell would you confess anything to the Inquisitor?” Julian didn’t fall for the prompt and Alec mumbled to himself, “Nevermind.”
“That means something. He was in the Circle with Valentine when he was younger. I know he understood the mistakes he made and was always trying to find a way back to redemption for the worse things he’d done in his life. I know he wasn’t a saint, but when the scales are balanced I hope he landed on the side of good. I appreciate it, but I wanted to talk to you about Livvy.”
Julian became dangerously still.
“When Max died, we all dealt with it differently. Mom and dad—they couldn’t even be around each other, ended up finally getting a divorce. Jace, he’d practice sixteen hours a day—just to work off that extra energy, and even then I’m not sure it really helped. Isabelle, she locked herself in her room for days on end and started cavorting with a vampire,” he cringed. “The things I walked in on—ugh!”
“And you, what did you do?” Julian didn’t really want to know the details of Isabelle and Simon’s love life. He was jealous they were getting their own kind of happily ever after and with his so out of reach Julian didn’t want to hear it.
“I spent a lot of my time with Magnus. Being a warlock, he’s lived enough lifetimes to understand how fragile and fleeting mortality is. And how tragic. We are given the gift to love, but to do that also means we experience loss. Being a Shadowhunter is hard, Julian. You know this better than most because of your father and what you saw and had to do in the Dark War. Our lives are always at risk and we die.” He was subdued. “There are no right answers. It’s painful. When you can’t stand it come to me and we’ll do another round, or read a story to Tavvy, or chase a demon with Emma. God, there was so much I wanted to teach Max,” he said regretfully. “He’d be about the twins age now and I sent a prayer for him to watch over Livvy.”
Julian felt the tears welling and turned his head away so Alec couldn’t see. But, Alec was right he did understand enough of Julian to return the Praetor House and leave him to cry out his own grief in solitude.

Lord of Shadows Review & Analysis! SPOILERS AHEAD, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
On another note about spoilers, I get that seeking out spoilers as well as snippets, are a product of waiting so long for the next book… but I don’t know that I will treat them the same way going into QOAAD because I almost felt, while reading, that I had read 35% of the book already! I can’t promise that I won’t seek out spoilers or snippets, but I do hope that less are released over the next two years (I know that sounds ridiculous, but I would prefer a surprise!) With Regards to Individual Characters: • Emma: a feminist badass, growing into being the best shadowhunter of her time but not there yet. Her sarcasm and skill has improved since LM, and I literally laughed out loud during her POV’s and while reading her quotes. The scene with her and Diego and the fire ants= pure gold. Her scene with Manuel and calling out the cohort for being fascists= pure gold. • Julian: a sweetheart and I want to cry thinking about how much he has been through. I know “Dark Julian” has been referenced several times throughout the fandom but I really didn’t see too much of a change until- actually- the steamy scene with Emma where he demands that she calls him only Julian. Very sexy, very dark too. • Cristina: deserves better and I am dying for more of her POV’s. I am always amazed by her class and maturity. • Diego: not perfect. I am mad at him. • Kit: surprisingly likeable. I am so glad they included POV’s with him and Jace!! • Livia: underrated as hell, so sweet, so caring, so selfless, her charm and sarcasm= gold. • Ty: I AM SO GLAD WE ARE FINALLY STARTING TO SEE T Y B L A C K T H O R N AND HIS TRUE SELF-A M E N. • Dru- her crush on Jaime is fitting for a first crush and I’m glad he gave her the confidence to speak up. I want to hug her literally all the time. • Tavvy- irrelevant but cute. SHIPS: • I surprisingly loved Mark and Emma’s dynamic. Their relationship reminded me of a mundane high school sweetheart kind of relationship, because you can tell they absolutely care about each other, I just don’t see them as anything more than a bromance. I will however agree with the sentiment, "maybe in another life" because maybe, in another series, in another world, they would have been perfect for each other. • Kieran/Mark/Cristina: I find it significant that no choices were made in terms of canon relationships, which I interpret as a canon friendship because if any of them were going to be romantically involved, a decision would be made by now. I enjoy the friendship they have, I surprisingly forgave Kieran, but I do not expect any of the Blackthorns or Emma to forgive him also. His actions in QOAAD will definitely define how I feel about him going forward. • JEMMA: You all know I am 100% a Jemma shipper, but this time around I was glad that their relationship did not overshadow the rest of the book. I liked how private their relationship was, which is a funny word to use because people become more privy to it in LOS and because it was extremely private in LM, but the fact that they were literally in a different part of their country on their own made me all happy. • I am also glad that I got the B&N copy with the extra scene, which I waited to read because it is right after the ending of the book and I did not want to read anything after finishing LOS, lol. • Kitty: No canon romantic relationship yet, still very cute scenes… Ill talk about this in theories. • Kit/Livia: I am glad that Livvy’s first kiss was Kit, and not some random boy who won’t treasure the memory or look back and think “oh she was sweet, it’s a shame what happened to her”. Kit will always treasure the fact that he was Livia’s first kiss, and will cherish the friendship he had with her. It was platonic, but still special. I know people on tumblr were upset with this but I hope by the end of the book they understood. PROFOUND THINGS IN LOS • Lets talk about the fact that Emma Carstairs literally doesn’t cry….. but she cried over Julian literally 400 times in Lord of Shadows. If that doesn’t show you how much she literally loves that boy idk what will. • CLARY SHIPS JEMMA. During their conversation Clary literally says “who I pictured you with [not Mark or Cameron] doesn’t make sense….” This goes back to my question to CC about whether or not Simon knows about Jules and Emma, since he noticed something off during the parabatai ceremony. She responded “he knows something, he just doesn’t know what he knows”. I think the same applies to Clary, maybe she has even had premonitions about it, and that is so so significant. #jemmaisendgame • Kit and Livia and Ty’s friendship: so sweet and pure and is literally the reason why Kit decides to stay. How will Ty and Kit function without their third musketeer? • DRU & JAIME: Thank you Jaime for giving Dru the confidence to confront her family over her role as a Shadowhunter… but the witchlight you left behind that literally portals to another dimension: WTF? WHO IS ASH????? That scene is messed up because it is so short and therefore, subconsciously everyone looks over it because of how chaotic everything else is. I can’t help but feel like this is going to play a MASSIVE role in QOAAD. • Diana & Gwyn: Thank you CC for trans representation and a beautiful story. The fact that Gwyn accepts her wholeheartedly made my chest ache, and I hope that no one will use it against her please please please. • Jules & Emma’s Decision to tell the Inquisitor: Not sure why they did this tbh, but now that Robert is dead, what are their options??? Did he mark it down somewhere? Will they become so irrational that they consider the Seelie Queen’s offer? Livia’s Death • Months ago I received an anon message from someone about Livvy, which literally said that they felt something was going to happen to her and I completely dismissed it…. Thinking we haven’t seen enough of her storyline yet and it was too soon. I AM SO SORRY, and it’s literally all I have been thinking about for days. • Livia was so so selfless, down to her core, the last moments of her life were spent trying to save the people she loves. • I discussed with a mutual that the fact that Annabel did it was both cruel and also extremely fitting. • When you think about it, Livvy was the 21st century version of Annabel. From their appearance, which was remarkably similar, to the way that they treated outsiders taking refuge in their family (Livvy with Kit, Annabel with Malcolm) down to their deaths, both innocents killed trying to protect the ones they love. • The fact that the Mortal Sword shattered to me symbolized the end of the truth and trust within the Clave. • The amount of guilt that each character will carry following these deaths is heartbreaking… • i sincerely hope her death is not tossed to the side, discussed for 150 pages then only mentioned 4-5 times after that because she deserved better, the entire Blackthorn family did, and peace was completely ripped away from them Which brings me to my first theory: I believe there was a reason that Jessamine was introduced to TDA, not only to highlight Kit’s Herondale-ness, but also as a foreshadowing of another character who is not at peace, feels that there is unfinished business, and a group of people needing to be protected: Livia. Because it was made clear in the book that necromancy and raising the dead is forbidden, and because QOAAD takes place a week later, Livvy’s chances of being raised are very very very slim. I sincerely believe that she will come back, but not to life. It would be fitting of her to come back as a ghost (not at first but definitely later in the story) and for her to protect her family, and give Kit and Ty the OK to do whatever they want to do (whether its be a couple or become parabatai, or go to the Scholomance) More theories: • Though I predict a dark Julian, I do not predict a dark/irredeemable Julian, who digs himself into such a big hole that he can’t climb out of it. Remember he has two anchors: his family, and Emma… • The Rosales brothers, especially with their plans to overthrow the Cohort and fool Zara are going to play a massive role in QOAAD. • I think that Jemma are going to have to confide in Jem and Tessa, and they will end up helping Jules and Emma with the parabatai curse. I am also sure they will play a big role in the next book. • Unpopular Opinion: I do not think Clary will die. I know she thinks she will, but CC did say QOAAD is lighter (in regards to themes) than LOS, and I just do not think it would be a lighter book if Clary, a significant character, dies. I think she will become close to death, and people will become concerned, then she will tell Jace of her fears and say yes to his proposal. However, I could very well be wrong!! •i do predict the Cohort being in power for a short amount of time….. because they represent members of our society, I do not think they will be shut down so easily because that’s not realistic. Despite this, hope and love always win. I trust that this will remain true in the next book. • I do predict the end of the Cold Peace, it was never ever a good idea and no one likes it. • I predict that Drusilla will be a hero, now that her older sister has passed away and she has finally decided to step up as a Shadowhunter, I do not doubt that the role she plays will be significant, it just seems to be a reasonable underdog story. • Kitty: parabatai or lovers? An important decision, because Kit does reference his thoughts about being parabatai with Ty, and Ty finally says yes to being parabatai with Livvy. I think it’s a possible “that’s what Livvy would have wanted” trope, but I could also be wrong and think its about as equal of a chance of them becoming lovers. • Who will the new head of the LA Institute be? I sincerely doubt it will go to someone the Blackthorns do not know or trust. They have had so much taken from them, the Institute does not deserve to go next. Possibly Cristina? Will Jules or Emma be of age? Jem or Tessa following the end of the Cold Peace? We have to see! • ASH… I am just frustrated that we do not know more about him… I don’t even have a theory I just needed an excuse to talk about him again. Questions and Theories from my mutuals!!!!! • Anonymous: Its 3 am and I am literally just crying on my bed because of the book. >> Relatable!! I cried hours after I finished because I was so sad. The ending really got me! • Anonymous: Do you think Jaime and Dru are endgame? She is 13 and hes like 17 but he thinks she’s 16. Idk, they seem to have a nice friendship but not a romantic relationship in my opinion.. >> Agreed! I honestly think CC included this first crush idea as a way of introducing Dru’s further character development, not necessarily to introduce them as a couple… But also think about Cecily and Gabriel!!! They were about the same ages at the time, even though that was a different time period… anything is possible, but I do not ship them romantically! • VirginaNewman: I loved LOS, however I was indeed disappointed that Helen + Aline make a debut in the LAST chapter! >> I definitely thought Helen and Aline would play a larger role in LOS, they were barely mentioned, barely had any scenes… I was disappointed by their small role too, but I am interested to see how hard they fight to stay in the next book. Ps- the scene where Aline basically tells Zara to shut her fucking mouth is GOLD. • Betweenshadesoftessagray- Since Robert’s dead, its going to be a race to get that spot, with probably Zara’s father trying to become Inquisior. And since Robert was the one who could help Emma and Julian with the exile thing, they really don’t know what to do with it. I think the powers will continue to grow, and since I think the main battle of QOAAd is going to be a battle where the warlocks and nephilim cannot use their runes/warlock magic, maybe their parabatai magic will still work and that’s how they win. I have already stated that I think there is going to be a battle in QOAAD without being able to use rune magic and the warlocks not being able to use their magic, but this didn’t fit in my other ask I just realized something that made my theory more solid: in the beginning, Zara says she went to Hungary because they were claiming their weapons were not working and she said it was incompetence, so the blight is already spreading not only in Idris but everywhere else. >> This is such a well thought out theory and I wish I could give a formal response but I definitely need to go back, reread, and analyze this… I didn’t even realize the significance of Shadowhunters and warlocks including Magnus losing their powers!! Wow! Is this because of the Black Volume? I definitely think Emma and Julian’s parabatai/love powers will play a huge role in QOAAD and maybe even save the day during this second Dark War. Maybe that’s how they will become heros, their bond will be broken as a reward or something and everyone can live happier ever after? AHH! • Share your theories and thoughts in the comments below or inbox me (not on Anon so I can respond privately!!!)

Back with the Blackthorns S01E01 “Pilot”
This is my gift for my lovely friend Becca aka @thepurplewarlock || One day while we were talking I said that she could have an entire sitcom based off of her quirkiness and it lead to this || I’m not sure if I’ll write more about this so don’t get your hopes up too high(if you have hopes lol)
Rebecca heaved her luggage to the front door of the Los Angeles Institute. It was two PM; sweltering hot and she had gotten off her eight-hour flight. Usually, shadowhunters used portals to get around but it only took one look at that swirling mass of warped space and time to say NOPE. But right then she was wondering if she had made the right choice.
She wandered aimlessly on the beach, searching for a huge church. Five people had asked her if she was lost. She was tempted to say yes but how would she explain it? Yeah, I’m looking for some super attractive, demon-fighting people with cool tattoos and they live in an invisible church. Well, invisible to you. Have you seen them? And even her eyes hadn’t fully adjusted to the Sight yet. But when they finally did it slapped her in the face.
The Institute loomed over her. The cement was cracked, there were dents in the walls, and the backyard was abuzz with life; impressions made in the dirt and trees. People live in that old house, alright. Her people.
She reached the front door and rang the doorbell, which seemed newly installed like the large windows. It did little good to the weathered place. She heard shuffling and harsh whispering from the inside and then the door opened to reveal a tall, teenage boy with sea-green eyes that held distrust.
She felt a tad dazed but composed herself quickly. She beamed.
The boy shook his head, “You must be confused. Wherever you need to be, it’s not here. There’s a phone booth near the beach.”
Becca pushed up her sleeve to uncover the rune of angelic power on her wrist. The whispering stopped and suddenly people were crowding the door. She saw a beautiful blonde girl mutter, “I bet you five bucks she’s a lost Herondale, Kit”, to a smaller blond boy who looked as if he had too many tricks up his sleeve. Kit answered, “No way, Emma. She doesn’t look sarcastic enough.”
Becca thought of the name Herondale, she’d heard it being thrown around in Alicante with both negative and positive connotations.
“I’m not a lost Herondale”, she said, “I’m a recently ascended mundane from England as you can tell by my accent. I have chosen the name Rebecca Blackthorn.” She smiled shyly and quickly added, “But you guys can call me Becca.” Emma grumbled as she slipped green bills into Kit’s fingers—which held money with a certain familiarity of a con man but his eyes said no such thing.
The boy who opened the door was taken aback, “You don’t want that name. I’m ninety percent sure it’s cursed. Don’t use Herondale either.”
“Or Dearborn”, Emma growled. Somehow, his frown was etched even deeper into his tanned face.
“You guys can’t be so bad. You seem like a nice family.”
“That’s how we’re supposed to seem. Now please, go back to Alicante and change your name.”
Becca stammered, “B-but why don’t you want me here? You don’t even know me. I’d like to help.”
A cute, chubby girl who embodied her siblings’ traits asked, “Yeah, why Julian? I’ve only met like three people who don’t live in this house. She’s new.”
Julian replied, “It’s not that we don’t want you it’s just that we have a lot of emotional baggage and we need to be able to trust you completely.”
A brooding faerie glared under periwinkle locks, “I suggest we give her a test to assess her loyalty.”
Julian crossed him arms, “Kieran, loyalty takes time to build. You can’t just—”
“Okay. Here’s the test; Do you like lamps?”, queried a man with two-colored irises. One solid, the other metallic like the faerie’s. He practically bounced off the walls with his bubbly energy.
Becca decided to ignore the oddity of the question, “Lamps are nice. I like them.”
“That settles it. She’s a Blackthorn.”
Julian sighed, “Come on in, Becca.”
A girl volunteered, “Let me help you with that. I’m Livvy”, and grabbed the luggage.
Becca exclaimed, “Careful! I have precious cargo…” Mugs spilled from a hole in the pack. Twenty mugs along with a hundred tea bags. Eyes bored into her head.
A gray-eyed, obsidian-haired boy pondered, “Why are you smuggling tea of all things? There’s much more profit in the illegal drug industry. Unless… they’re vintage?”
Julian chided, “Ty! Don’t give her ideas.”
***
Becca was a bit embarrassed about her excessive mug collection but pride still filled her heart. And tea was currently filling her stomach. The warm cinnamon taste relieved her headache and near heat stroke. She thought, Why must California be so hot?
She missed her mundane family and friends in England. She had told them she was going to the U.S. to study. It was abrupt and questionable because she was so happy with her job and life but they wished her luck. She hoped she could go visit soon. Until then she was stuck in a room that lacked personality but it wasn’t all bad.
Earlier that day, Diana, the tutor had shown her around the place. Although, it didn’t keep the new shadowhunter from getting confused. She felt like leaving a trail of bread crumbs or more so—tea bags. Diana had also went through some training sessions—mental and physical— which left her bones and brain feeling like mush. She could hardly hold up her mug and sleep threatened to come but she wanted to stay up. To observe what vibes her new home gave off at night.
Here are the things she figured out during that day:
Everyone’s names
Everyone loves each other very much(almost frighteningly)
Mark is affiliated with multiple lamps?
Julian is the mom
Emma’s the fun uncle
Julian and Emma are in love with each other
Livvy, Kit, and Ty have a friend group together
Dru is slightly allergic to babysitting
Kieran has no idea what’s going on
Tavvy is a pure soul
Cristina needs a hug
THE KITCHEN IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN THIS HOUSEHOLD(as mentioned by Julian. He didn’t yell it but the undertone was clear)
Diana seems to be the only one with complete sanity(although with these kids it might disappear soon)
You may think that’s a lot to find out but Becca knew it was just the tip of the iceberg. She dozed off during dusk and awoke to yelling two hours later. She almost put on her gear until she realized the yelling sounded as if it came from arguing children. From the kitchen! The same kitchen where she kept her mugs. She scurried downstairs and took in the scene.
There was a cake, except it was now frosting-down on the floor. Livvy and Dru were going at it. They both claimed the other dropped the cake and Julian was trying to reason with the two. Kit and Ty were off in a corner, immersed in a card game that Ty was definitely winning. Cristina attempted to read a book but couldn’t stop herself from sneaking peeks at the drama. Diana simply gave everyone the “I taught you better than this” scowl. Then she saw it. Her mugs lay despairingly on the floor. She could see the cracks from a mile away. Kieran’s hair was cobalt as he was extremely annoyed. He stalked off outside.
In fact, everybody was annoyed. “What happened?”, Becca asked. She ran to her broken mugs.
Mark explained, “We made a cake to welcome you and apologize for our rudeness earlier. But one of the girls slipped over frosting and accidentally opened the cabinet leaving for a mug genocide. That action triggered another one of the girls to accidentally drop the cake. It was amazing but it’s gone now. Sorry, Rebecca.”
She glanced around the room as a chorus of “sorrys” was said. They were all sincere. Livvy and Dru calmed down; agreeing to share the blame. Becca left the kitchen with a million thoughts running through her mind. They destroyed my mug collection… but out of an act of friendship, she thought.
She went outside to take a breather. She met Kieran on the porch and queried, “How were you supposed to get back in if you can’t open the door?”
He stared at the stars and laughed without humor, “I guess I wasn’t going back in.”
“What’s got you so down?”
“I made up the idea and it backfired. You Nephilim can be so much sometimes.”
She didn’t answer.
“I’m sorry. I really am. I wanted this place to feel more warmer.”
She smiled, “This place is warmer. Partly because it’s California and partly because you are a really loving family.”
Kieran scanned her face, “How can you say that when we murdered your mugs?”
She grimaced at that thought but simply shook her head. “I can get new mugs. But I can’t replace memories. One day I’ll look back at this and laugh.”
Kieran nodded and gazed wistfully at the stars.
She sat next to him in one of those old-timey rocking chairs and decided to break the silence. “I feel as if I’m in a western film. All I need is a cowgirl hat and a southern accent. I’ve actually been working on one.”
Kieran raised a brow.
In an atrocious Southern accent she said, “There’s a snake in my boot.”
Both she and Kieran burst out laughing. Mark approached them, guffawing also. Between breaths he said, “That’s not a Western. That’s Toy Story.”
Becca mocked offense, “Are you telling me that you deny the existence of the most toy-based, action-packed, Western, Space-thriller animation ever created?”
Smugly he retorted, “Well maybe I am.”
Kit called from inside, “You’re both a disgrace to Disney!”
It only made the three go into another fit of laughter. When it finally died down, Mark handed Rebecca an unbroken mug, salvaged from the wreckage, full of hot, cinnamon tea. In the cool air her heart swelled and Kieran had a small smile play on his face.
Before she could thank him, Mark added, “Emma went to buy some donuts to make up for the cake. Again, we apologize.”
She exclaimed, “Well quit apologizing! What’s done is done. I’ll get over it.”
His eyes widened, “So you’re not mad? You don’t want to leave?”
“Of course not. Tonight was entertaining. I’d like to see more.”
Mark beamed and sat with the two. They talked that entire night, nothing too personal, just fun stuff. And when the donuts arrived you can bet that they let Becca have the first pick.
“What a marvelous excuse to eat junk food”, Julian teased.
Becca nudged him, “Marvelous indeed.”
But Diana constantly reminded that it wasn’t an everyday thing but she too wouldn’t miss out on the sugary deliciousness that was donuts.

LoS (Part 6): Predictions- Who Dies and Final Ships
Disclaimer: My theories are built not just on the Dark Artifices, but from all the previous books as a whole, and will contain SPOILERS if you haven’t read them. These ideas are based solely on book canon.
(edit: This was written before the release of LoS. Some ideas may be a little out of date...still interesting!)
The chapter titles of LoS are all lines from the poem Dreamland by Edgar Allan Poe. (I reposted the poem in my blog and the website Shmoop does an excellent line by line technical analysis for the truly dedicated) If it is a real place and not symbolic then it is a hard to find land in Faerie that crosses paths with the dead. Theory: The Lord of Shadows is the ruler of this obscure kingdom.
The Unseelie King may call himself the Lord of Shadows, but without the Black Volume, I don’t think he has the power to back that claim, like Gwyn without his cloak or the Queen without her crown. It’s probably why he put that line in the Faerie rhyme: “To regain what you have lost, Find the black book at any cost.” He wants the book so he may rule in truth…
PREDICTIONS ON WHO DIES:
Warning: These picks will be controversial—but not all I think will stay dead (will explain as I go)
Kieran is being held in Faerie for the crime of killing another Fae. I think he killed Iarlath when he was done questioning him in Lady Midnight--#1
I think some of the Centurions are going to die, maybe Jon Cartwright #2. And where the Centurions are, the Inquisitor won’t be far behind—Robert Lightwood #3. (Mostly I picked him because I have some great fan fic ideas and I need his character to be alive for them. I’m just waiting for all my well laid plans to get wrecked—I know that is not a sound basis for a pick, but there it is)
I had thought long on Diana, but decided against her because I know we’re going to hear more from her POV: I think she will be revealed as the transgender character and a possible ship match with Gwyn. It just seems like her character has too much of a role to play to be killed so early, but she is still on my watchlist.
Catarina Loss is also high on my watchlist. There is a lot of rumbling with the rise of the Cohort and she is a warlock. And she also was teaching at the Scholomance which puts her running with the Centurions. She also has a history, background with Diana, Magnus, Tessa and Simon. Her death would cause a lot of ripples throughout. We readers are vested in her so her death wouldn’t be an arbitrary character, but would matter, and affect the future decisions on all of the above.
I think the Seelie Queen will die, but that won’t be until the third book. The title of Number 3 is Queen of Air and Darkness, so she would have to be alive for at least part of it.
That leaves my final pick:
Cassandra Clare said the ending would be ‘brutal’. The only reason I came up with the following is because I asked myself who is the one character that can’t die, coupled with the statistical improbability of seven children of one Shadowhunter family surviving into early adulthood. I worked from there. IF YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT A BLACKTHORN DYING GO NO FURTHER. (Although I don’t think he’ll stay dead)
Which Blackthorn cannot die?
Ty
The absolute and most brutal.
His death would absolutely crush everyone. He has such a unique and amazing relationship with everyone in the family that his death would have the most repercussions on every character. I have an awful image of them standing over his dead body. Helen. Mark. Julian. Livvy. Dru. Tavvy. And Emma. Kit.
And I think that Emma who believes in the Parabatai curse will think it’s the reason he died.
But, hope is not yet lost, because that Pandora’s box of hers will get smashed.
There is general fandom consensus that when Emma stabbed the Black Volume something happened to her. LM (597) Emma: “She shrieked with pain as what felt like a bolt of electricity went up her arm. She heard Malcolm laugh, and a wave of energy shot from his outstretched fingers, slamming into her body. She was lifted and hurled backward, magic tearing through her…”
Malcolm: “Oh, that was precious…That was the hand of God, Emma!”
What had the Black Volume done to her? Her chest felt as if something heavy had been rolled onto it, and her arm burned and ached.
Theory: It’s two-fold. CC has hinted that Cortana has some wicked capabilities and some magic of its own. I think the power of the Black Volume bound itself to Cortana much like Clary did heavenly fire to Heosphoros. But, I think what she was feeling was a sympathetic magic where she will become the only one who can wield Cortana’s power.
I think seeing Ty dead (or any of the children, and of course Julian for that matter) will shatter open that box and she’ll try to bring him back by wielding Cortana in some instinctual way. But, it wouldn’t turn out like how she thought, because the power would then turn Ty into the Lord of Shadows and he’d be half alive, half dead ruling this kingdom of Dreamland and then Cassandra Clare could keep us hanging there for two year. 2 YEARS, Gah!
It would be a good set up for QoAD. Emma wouldn’t be able to leave Julian until they found a way to get Ty back. A search for him would echo the Greek story of Orpheus and Eurydice. They would need to go to the Seelie Queen to pass through her lands, maybe need some other favors—which leads back to her Crown. Then, my thought would be when they got there they couldn’t return with Ty unless there was someone to replace him.
My first incarnation: In a gallant move of self-sacrifice and to prove his love to Mark, Kieran would volunteer thus becoming the new Lord of Shadows. Maybe he’d think he and Mark could then be together after he died, because this Dreamland seems like a place for the dead. But, then CC confessed that she isn’t the author to read if you don’t like the idea of Triads and knowing that is a possibility I’ve revised my theory. I think she’s going to have a lot of fun exploring messy relationships full of cultural differences, human emotions like jealousy and weaving different strengths and weaknesses of three personalities into one maybe (maybe not) congruous relationship. And that doesn’t even include what Cristina’s mother will say—
I still think that someone will have to replace Ty, but I’m now voting for Gwyn. He’s got work experience on his resume and the hunt doesn’t allow women and if he is courting Diana it would be an incredibly tender gesture for him to offer her a kingdom to be his queen.
I write drafts, then sit on it for a week before posting, in case I have any other weird ideas. I was annoyed to have these, because I thought I might have this wrapped up:
Alt Theory: Malcolm Fade died while using of a mega necromantic spell from the Black Volume. What if the necromancy was enough to preserve his life and he is now the Lord of Shadows? There is Annabel still to consider. He would really want to find her. And, poor Emma—all she would have wanted was to kill her parents’ murderer and instead she gave him a promotion…
Alt Theory: Lord of Shadows is a title and we assume is a he, because of ‘lord’. But, if that power went through Cortana and Emma now wields it, could she then be the Lord of Shadows. (This goes back to Part 5 Theories) If she were a descendent of James Herondale whose warlock talent was becoming a shadow puts her as a prime candidate and with Magnus’ spell of forgetting and the belief that she is a ‘normal’ Shadowhunter could hide her from everyone, even herself.
FINAL SHIP PREDICTIONS:
Emma and Julian—with the irony that the Parabatai bond is the only thing that gives them enough power to fight whatever battles come in Fae, but when they return to the mortal world the Silent Brothers and Iron Sisters are waiting for them—eek!
Mark, Kieran and Cristina Triad—messy hot relationship
Livvy and Diego—but she’s only 15, and he’s 18/19, so they should be on a very slow track to dating. If Jaime turns Emma and Julian into the Clave I think she’ll blame Diego.
Ty and Kit—go for it! There is a lot of talk about Livvy/Kit parabatai possibility, but I think Julian will nix any idea of that given his own experience.
Dru will be one half of the main characters for Wicked Powers. She’ll be about eighteen then, and might have a latent warlock power too.
2 YEARS! Gah!
***Then you do know that by the time Cassandra Clare’s done with the Wicked Powers she’ll will be wondering about the futures of warlock Max and Rafael and Tavvy.
I don’t think she’ll be able to help herself :)
(Part 7 is coming, but it’s more random ideas about characters throughout the series—not necessarily Lord of Shadows specific—I have some good ideas on Tessa, some wacky ones on Church and few others. If you have any questions or thoughts please contact me! Then I’m officially done until the release!)
