SECOND TO LAST LOVE
This drama is being SLEPT on. I love this drama so much. I genuinely really like the plot because it was slightly different than a basic romance drama. It's cute and it's based off people who are older and have a stable life already. They try to adapt to each other.
It came out in 2016 with Moon Lovers so it wasn't that popular but I swear it's worth it.
The actors are literally my favorite. I'm in love with Ji Jin-Hee!!

La la la la la la la la la.. Romantic Sunday.. 🍃🍃
This OST is probably the most iconic in this K-drama and everytime I listen to it, I remember all the scenes in this show.
I was so excited when I heard Kim Seon-ho (which I watched from Start-Up) and Shin Min-ah (which is one of my favorites!!) will pair up in a new K-drama. It’s been a while since I watched Oh My Venus and when I saw Min-ah in HomeCha, OMG!! Nothing has changed!! Those iconic dimples from My Girlfriend is a Gumiho!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Idk I was just soooo happy to watch her again.
I love this show not only because of Shin Min-ah but also of the story itself. The dynamics of the whole characters, their stories.. everything. It’s really the “healing” drama we all need.
In my opinion, here are some of the highlights of this K-drama:
1. Gongjin
Tumblr media
Ahhhhh this town.. ❤️ It reminds me of my province and how simple life is. Sometimes, especially in how fast-paced our lives are, what we need is a breather. And this place is a perfect example for it. The sea, the nature surrounding it, the people, the food, everything is just perfect. How I wish there really is “Gongjin” that we could all visit and just.. breathe.
2. The Gongjin Squad
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OMG!! I don’t really know how to describe all of them or each of them but so far, they are the best characters I’ve ever watched. They’re so fun to watch and everyone has a story to tell. There’s a lot to say about each of the characters but I’ll just leave it like this. Just watch it! ☺️
3. SikHye couple ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay okay!!!!! This couple is really relationship goals! I just love how compatible their characters are to each other. Their love story is not the typical “you and me against the world” or “I can’t be with you but I love you”. Their relationship isn’t the toxic type. I really cried on the part where Hye-jin said that she’s willing to wait until Du-sik is ready to open up about his past, his feelings and his thoughts then at the right time, he did and that’s the beauty of their relationship.
4. “Everyone has there own struggles in life. Always be kind.”
Tumblr media
This is one of the lessons, the most important actually, that I’ve learned from this K-drama. Each of the characters has something going on in their lives, just like us. Sometimes we thought these things are just “little things” and that we will get over it but the truth is, these little things might turn into bigger ones if we just keep it to ourselves. Sometimes it’s good to have someone who’s willing to listen. Even just to lend an ear. It’s not easy, I know, but if we just let someone in, it’s a big relief.
There’s a lot to say about this K-drama but I’ll just end it with this quote from Hometown Cha Cha Cha’s last scene. Please please!! Watch it!! 🥰🥰🥰

Enhypen Little Angels Series: A Small Friend
warnings: grammar mistakes (as always lol)
this was supposed to be posted two weeks ago. I'm sorry for the delay
word count: 1,612
Lee Heeseung:
The small family entered the pet shop, making the bell in the door go'ding' as they passed by. The cashier greeted them as Seojoon ran to see all the pets in the place.
“Papa! Look how adorable they are!” Joonie exclaimed and then Heeseung went to his side to check out all the things his kid was so excited about.
“Do you like this one, Joonie?” Heeseung pointed out a small yorkie terrier in front of him.
“Or what about this one?” Mina pointed out a small Maltese puppy.
The couple noticed that their son wouldn't respond to their questions. “Joonie?”
They got closed to their son who was happily seeing a beautiful dark brown coat ferret.
“Mommy, Papa... He's really cute.” He said putting his hand inside the environment the ferret was in and passed his hand through it's soft hair.
“How do you know it's a he?”
“I can tell.” Seojoon was hypnotized by the small ferret, it was like he had found a new friend.
Heeseung went to the cashier and asked for all the procedures to adopt the small cutie.
“What are you going to name him buddy?” Heeseung played with Joon's hair.
“Kirby!”
They both looked at him at him cutely.
“Kirby? Where did you get that name?” Mina laughed a little.
“I dunno? I just thought it was cute.”

Park Jongseong
The sound of the front door opening and closing caught the attention of both Bella and Mila. The little girl ran to the the living room seeing her father putting his backpack down on the floor.
“Papa!” She ran to hug Jay with a wide smile, then he carried her in his hip.
“Hi baby! Did you miss me? How was school?” He said kissing Mila's cheeks.
“It was good, mommy and I baked brownies after school and they are delicious!” She said kissing two of her fingers which made Jay laugh.
“I'm pretty sure you were a good cook today, so I brought you a gift.” With his free hand he grabbed a small gift box with a white covering and a gold coloured ribbon.
“Hi love, what's that?”
Jay placed Mila down ontu the floor, and then grabbed a bouquet of peonies handing it to Bella, making her smile.
“Tell me we didn't forget an special occasion?”
“Nope, I'm just spoiling my princess and my queen. Do you want to open your gift, angel?” Mills nodded excitedly opening her gift just to find a cute baby pomeranian in the box inside the box.
She gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. She looked at her father with happiness and took the puppy in her hands.
“Papa he's adorable! Thank you!” Mills embraced the puppy in a delicate way.
“What are you going to name him?” Jay said as he saw the glow in his daughter's face.
“I'll call him... Prince!” She gave the puppy a kiss on his head.
“Why Prince?”
“Because if you are a king, mommy is a queen and I'm a beautiful princess, then his a handsome prince.” Bella and Jay smiled widely.

Shim Jaeyun
“There are so many puppies!”
Jacob exclaimed as the newborn puppies layed close to Layla, getting comforted by her fur.
“Can we keep them all?” He looked at Jake with his cute puppy eyes and pouted cutely to convince his father.
Jake got on his knees and played with his son's hair.
“Well, we promised Beomgyu and Yeonjun to give them some puppies, we also promised your mommy's sister to give her a puppy too, so we can only keep one.”
“Aw!”
“Don't be sad kiddo, they are all going to have a beautiful home with a loving family.” Jake kept playing with Jacob's hair.
“But I want to keep them all for myself.” The little boy pouted, and a few tears threatened to spill down his cheeks.
Jake looked at Layla and her puppies and smiled before looking down at his son who was a sad mess.
“What if you pick one puppy now and name them? Wouldn't you like that?”
“Yeah, I like that...” Jacob putted his knees on the floor and looked at all the puppies, before choosing one.
A little female puppy with a darker fur than the others.
“I'll call her Hazel, and know she'll be my best friend.”
“If Jin Ae could hear you right now... she would be hella mad at you.”
Tumblr media
Park Sunghoon
Jin Ae was playing on the backyard, making a small picnic with her dolls, she had a pink dress on and a tiara on top of her head. She served some “tea” in one of her dolls cup, before she saw across her vision something around the flowers that her mother cultivated.
“Is there a dragon around here? You can come out, I don't bite.” She got up and ran to the flowers, and to her surprise she found the most precious bunny she had ever seen in her whole three years of life.
“Gosh, you are so cute. I'm going to call you Gyeoul.” She ran back inside her house withthe biggest smile in her face.
She grabbed on of dolls dresses and put in on the bunny.
“You are mine, you are all mine.” She said just as Sunghoon was walking down the stairs, he frowned at the sudden sight. Why was his daughter hugging a bunny dressed as a princess?
“Jin Ae? What are you doing with a rabbit inside the house? And why is it dressed like a princess combined with a pop star?”
“I found him daddy, he's name is Gyeoul. And his all mine!” Well, that was questionable. But her cute little puppy eyes were manipulating him somehow, she looked so happy with the bunny, Sunghoon didn't want to destroy his daughter's happiness.
“You know that you have to ask for permission to have a pet, but... If you are happy with him...” She squealed and jumped around Sunghoon like the cute little human being she was.
“Thank you daddy.”
“No problem darling. How could I say no to you and your cuteness?”
Tumblr media
Kim Sunoo
What was going on today on the Kim's household? Well... The twins had gotten their first pets.
Hotteok and Keikeu, a pair of hamsters.
“Appa, I think we lost Keikeu!” Young-Jae entered the couples room, where Aera was fast asleep from a hard day of work and Sunoo was drying his hair.
“No way! Those hamsters haven't even been here for three hours!”
The twins were organised, but at the same time they could be very forgetful and clumsy, so it kinda made sense that they lost one of the hamsters.
“We're sorry appa, we should have been more careful.” Young-hee said with teary eyes, also making her brother spill a few tears.
“Oh, no, no! My babies, please don't cry! I don't like seeing you cry. We'll find Keikeu together, so don't worry.” He dried Young-Jae's tears and then patted Young-hee's back to calm them down.
“Appa, isn't that Keikeu?” Young-hee got up and reached the hamster, before giving it a small hug.
Sunoo could only sigh relief... But
“Appa, I can't find Hotteok!”

Yang Jungwon
Let's say that Seung-hye found a siamese kitten in the park without a collar. It was a stray kitten.
She had her favourite blue backpack with her, so she grabbed the cat quickly without Jungwon noticing it.
“Seung-hye, it's getting late, we have to go.”
The girl grabbed her dad's hand as they both followed to the car.
Jungwon buckled Seung-hye's car seat, and then he finally drove home. They were both humming to some music on the radio, when all of the sudden.
“Meow!”
Did he just heard a cat inside the car?
“Meow!
Yep, he definitely did!
“Seung-hye? Did I hear a cat just meow?” Jungwon frowned, looking a the little one with the mirror.
“No”
Hm... Suspicious. Way to suspicious!
“Can you pass me your backpack, please?” He said grabbing the backpack from the backseat.
“No! There's rocks in there!”
“Yang Seung-hye.” He repeated with his voice sounding lower that usual.
“Ok. There's a cat in there, but he was all lonely and he couldn't be alone.”
When they got home, Jungwon continued to grab the backpack, while Seung-hye kept following around, begging him to not take him away from her.
“Appa, please don't take Holang away from me, we have to stay together!”
Good news! They kept the cat in the end.

Nishimura Riki
There was a sneeze, after sneeze, after sneeze. Maybe baby Hinata was allergic to fur, but they never truly realized it. She was always playing around with Bisco, and now that they got a new dog, she just started having allergies out of nowhere.
“Do you think we have to take her to the hospital?” Niki asked Mei, he was really worried after all, Hinata never had an allergic reaction before.
“Noooo, I don't like hospitals.” She protested, as any child, she did not like hospitals at all, they were really scary for her to be around.
Even though her parent told her not to, she kept playing with her new pet Coco, for her she was the representation of cuteness and happiness all at once.
“Hinata, I told you not to play with-” Niki noticed a few feathers on Hinata's pig tails. That was it, she was allergic to feather, not the dog.
“Wait baby, please don't move.” He said pulling out some feather and hairs at the same time.
“Ouch, you are ruining my hairstyle, silly!”
After that Hinata wasn't going to let Niki touch her hair ever again. And Coco got all the cuddles of the world that night.

----
Literature was next. Now this? This you could handle. Always being a bit of an avid reader, you could devour a novel in one night --- and you often did. Finding the hidden meanings between the lines of text, like unwrapping a present, gave you a thrill. You were the person who could debate for hours about the meaning of a symbol in a book, as annoying as that is to everyone else.
Maybe it was the promise of escape, where you could be transplanted into another world, detached from your own, that appealed so much to you about reading. You could lose yourself, feeling the rush of the love affair or the thrill of a dangerous adventure. Coupled with your analytical nature, you felt more than at home in a literature classroom.
With this in mind, you make your way to your next class with more vigor than usual. When you arrive and take a seat, you pull out your materials and wait for class to begin.
Several minutes later, your professor walks to the podium in the front of the room to introduce herself. After several minutes of reviewing the syllabus, she explains the structure of the class. You were to be placed in small groups, to discuss the readings and write a paper at the end of the semester. This made you a little nervous --- having to rely on others to some capacity for your grade always gave you a bit of anxiety.
She began reading out the names of the students belonging to each group, so you listen carefully as to not miss your own name despite your anxious thoughts swirling inside your head.
“... Eum Hee-Young, Gal Ae-Cha, Ree Mun-Hee, you are group seven. Kim Seokjin, Y/l/n y/f/n, Kim Namjoon, you are group eight. Ok Youngsoo…” her voice fades off as you glance around the room, trying to meet the gazes of other searching eyes as your group was announced.
Your eyes meet those of a guy who looked maybe a year or two older than you, with round, wire frame glasses. His mahogany hair was pushed off of his forehead, parted to the side giving him a youthful but put-together look. He holds up eight fingers, looking at you expectedly, and you nod quickly. He picks up his belongings, preparing to move to you as you had empty space in the seats around you. As he slings his backpack over a shoulder, you scan your eyes around the room to try to catch the other member of your group.
To your surprise, your eyes meet those of the same boy you had ogled over yesterday in your calculus class, before it had started. You shyly hold up your own eight fingers, to which he gives a decisive nod to, and begins to make his way to you as well. You can’t help but notice the planes of his back as he bends down to grab his backpack, his wide shoulders tilting making them seem even larger. He is wearing a simple blue button down and jeans, but even through that you could tell his shoulders tapered to a narrow waist, making him have the perfect masculine inverted triangular build.
Slightly embarrassed at your thoughts, you glance at your other partner, now close to you. His oversized yellow knit sweater swallowed him a little, but with the glasses gave him a cute bookish look. His large frame juxtaposed his cute appearance --- he was on the taller side and seemed built as well. You made eye contact, and gestured to the seat next to you for him to sit. The other boy now approaching, you both watch as he takes the other open seat in front of you.
Your group now assembled, you tune back into your professor who was explaining the first text you were to read together. She told you that it was a short love story that relied heavily on symbolism and became a prominent symbol in and of itself in movies and television. Your first assignment was to analyze the symbolism of the text, and come to a more complex conclusion than what the surface of the text presents. You could feel yourself becoming slightly excited to jump into the assignment as she explained.
“You will be given the rest of class to get acquainted with your group members. They will be permanent, bar any issues that may arise. The first assignment is due at the end of next class. While on this first assignment I will be more lenient with grading, please do your best and set a good standard for your groups. Okay, go ahead everyone,” she finishes.
At her dismissal of your attention, you glance back at your group members. The boy with glasses speaks first. “I’m Namjoon, nice to meet you guys.”
“Seokjin, or just Jin,” the other boy gives.
“I’m y/n, nice to meet you both.”
“So, what year and major are you? I’m a third year, and a journalism major,” Namjoon offers. As he speaks, he gives you both a grin that displays deep dimples on both cheeks. He was very cute, you decided. He had a nerdy charm to him, with a build on the beefy side that made you want to cuddle him.
“I’m a first year… and to tell the truth I haven’t decided on a major yet,” you admit, but give them both a smile.
“Ah, hoobae, you are lucky you are with us pros then! I’m a fourth year, and a business major,” Seokjin says with a wide smile.
“Sunbaenim, are you in calculus before this? I thought I recognized you from there,” you downplay a little. You knew he was in that class since you had spent time checking him out in it, but didn’t want to seem creepy.
“I have a recognizable face.” At this he gives a smug look, but is clearly using a joking tone. “Yeah, calculus with Yoo at nine?”
“Yep. That guy goes so fast,” you frown. “But anyways, how do you guys feel about this assignment?”
Namjoon enters the conversation again, “Honestly I’m kind of excited for it. It’s been a while since I’ve done any reading that isn’t research related, which kind of sucks.”
“That does suck. I love to read, that’s why I took this class, actually,” you empathize.
“Yeah? What do you like to read?” Namjoon leans towards you a bit, excited at the prospect of talking about reading it seems.
“Oh, um… I’d say my favorite genre is probably any type of fantasy, I like being able to be in a different world for a bit. Oh, I also like historical pieces, that stuff is always so interesting.” You were a little hesitant to share, afraid he’d judge your preferences.
“I love historical pieces. I think that’s one of the things that lead me into journalism actually, it’s basically writing history for those in the future to look back on. I just think that’s really cool.” His eyes seemed glitter as he talked about something he was obviously passionate about. You felt yourself developing a soft spot for the boy, finding his friendly disposition and slightly nerdy personality to be incredibly endearing. It didn’t hurt he was also very attractive.
“What about you sunbaenim? Do you like to read?” you ask Seokjin, whose head was oscillating between you and Namjoon.
Surprised the attention shifted to him, his eyes widened to give him an owlish look. You are really surrounded by some beautiful men, you think. What do they put in the water here? It would be normal to run across a cute guy here or there, but this is kind of ridiculous. Seokjin himself has a face that is so beautiful it looks like it should have been carved out of marble!
Focus! You have to scold yourself. The boy you were just admiring in your head is now answering your question and you are too distracted to even process what he’s saying.
“... not too crazy, occasionally I guess…” His body language told you that he was slightly embarrassed at not being as enthusiastic a reader as you and Namjoon.
“I’m sure you have hobbies that are cooler than reading then, if I was athletic or creative I wouldn’t read so much either! Namjoon-sunbaenim, I’m sure you agree,” you encourage with a smile, wanting Namjoon to follow suit in making Seokjin feel comfortable.
Thankfully, he catches on quick. “Oh, yeah, I am way too clumsy to do anything more high stakes than page turning,” He chuckles. You and Seokjin both smile at Namjoon’s subtle self-deprecation. They both were sweet, you think. Your earlier fears about working with others subside. “I guess I could say that I do have another hobby though, I actually help out at the school’s radio station for fun,” Namjoon adds shyly.
Jin tilts his head in surprise. “Oh really? I have a friend who…”
He gets abruptly cut off by the professor’s voice echoing through the room, which causes him to stop his thought.
“Hopefully everyone is acquainted now, and is ready to get to work next class. I expect good things from you all this semester. You are dismissed,” your professor says with finality.
The three of you quickly gather your things, ready to merge with the swarm of students streaming out of the door. You give them both a smile, and say, “It was nice meeting you both. See you next class!” to which they give their own farewell.
As you leave, you check your phone out of habit. It seems your intuition is right, as usual.
*Miss me yet?*
Does Taehyung really have nothing better to do?
*What exactly is there to miss?*
You hope that after your curt response he’d get the memo. This guy is such a fuckboy, you think. While you don’t know why he set his sights on you for now, you hope he gets bored soon. While you give that tough persona to him, the truth is you are more sensitive than that. The idea of being used for sex once and then discarded was unappealing, and Taehyung seemed like the type to do just that.
----
Finally home after attending two more classes for the day, which were thankfully much less eventful, you slip off your shoes and let your bag slide off your shoulder to thunk on the floor. You were tired. And hungry, apparently, because your stomach makes some concerning noises as soon as you slip your light jacket off. You make your way to the kitchen at the sound, ready to make a nice dinner and decompress.
When you get there, you see one of your new roommates sitting at the stools for your kitchen counter. This roommate was one that you had connected with immediately, drawn to her blunt but fun-loving aura. Her short stature, shorter than average, gave no warning for her and ‘gives-no-fucks’ attitude. You could tell however, that inside she had a soft heart. Even in your short time together, you had seen glimpses of it here and there.
You learned when you had met that she had moved to Korea from America last year, making her a second year at your university. Her features stood out from the crowd, with brown skin and large curls that framed her face in a halo. She was really quite beautiful. Tia, but called Bean by her friends, which now included you, made you feel welcomed to campus and you were thankful for her.
Wanting to not scare her as you walked into the kitchen, you gave her a greeting. Her head pops up from where it was buried in her phone, which had been drawing her into her own world.
“Hey chickie. Long day?” she asks. Apparently your exhaustion was pretty obvious if she could tell right off the bat. You sigh, bending over to pull some vegetables out of the fridge.
“I just want to know who let me schedule four classes on Tuesdays. They should be in jail,” you complain.
She gives you an amused look, watching you now stand at the cutting board to prepare your food. “I think that person was you, sweet thing.”
“Ugh, don’t remind me. If I could go back in time and slap my past self I would,” you grown with your head tipped back. She lets out a laugh at your expense.
“Don’t laugh at me unnie! I’m going to pass away from exhaustion over here!” you try to say seriously, but can’t help but let out a little giggle. “What were you doing with your head buried in your phone, huh? Are you talking to someone?” you tease, pointing your knife at her with your other hand on your hip.
“Why, do you wish it was you?” She wiggles her eyebrows, giving you a side smirk. You knew she was deflecting, so you lift your eyebrow and give her a flat expression, waiting for her real answer. “Ugh, it’s nothing. There was just this really cute girl in my class today, and I tried talking to her but she didn’t really seem like she liked me… and I may have just been looking at her social media,” Tia admitted.
Now at the stove, stirring your dinner, you look over your shoulder to say something that would hopefully ease her anxiety. “You know that you can come on strong sometimes, maybe she’s just a little shy, ya know? Maybe try again with a softer approach,” you offer. “What is there not to like?”
She gives you a wide grin to match your own at your last remark. You both giggle, any tension in the air from Tia’s concerns gone. Dinner now finished, you grab two bowls and serve you both. You both slip into easy banter, almost like you two have been friends for years. You hope that you will be, someday.

I’ll Go to You When the Weather is Nice ( aka When The Weather is Fine) Final Review
Cast: Park Min Young, Seo Kang Joon, Lee Jae Wook, Moon Jeong Hee, Jin Hee Kyung, Kim Hwan Hee, and Nam Ji-Ae
Year: 2020
Channel: JTBC
Streaming Platform : Rakuten Viki ( all the episodes are free)
Rating: 9.7/10
Trigger Warnings : Intimate Partner Violence, Suicide
Synopsis :
I’ll Go To You When the Weather is Nice is based on the book of the same name and the focus of the show is a fictional community that lives in Bookhyun Village, a small rural community located within Gangwon Province. The protagonist of this show is Mok Hae Won, a cellist, who quits her teaching  job in Seoul and moves back to Bookhyun to live with her aunt. Hae Won is a scarred and broken individual, who has spent much of her life feeling lonely and unloved. She is neglected by her mother, who went to jail for seven years for killing her husband and Hae Won’s father. Her aunt who has taken care of her since she was in high school is cold, distant, and aloof. Additionally, her time in Seoul, was marked by an emotionally abusive boss, who constantly berated her abilities as a cello teacher by claiming that she was not likable enough to teach the students. When Hae Won returns to Bookhyun, she is arguably experiencing one of the lowest points in her life. However, Hae-Won starts to see the light at the end of the tunnel , when she reunites with her former high school classmate, Im Eun Soeb, the owner of “Goodnight Bookstore” . Eun Soeb has also had a crush on Hae Won since they were in high school and is also a man as broken as Hae Won is by the difficult life he has held. What forms the crux is not only whether Hae Won or Eun Soeb will fall in love with each other, but also their own personal healing journeys as they try to overcome past trauma and insecurities. Additionally, the show also focuses extensively on the stories of supporting characters as well, most importantly Hae Won’s aunt and mother, two women who are left to navigate the same pain that Hae Won faces in their own lives.
Review:
This review is probably one of the hottest takes I’ve ever made because so many of the viewers of the show dismissed the show as boring for its slow pace. While I agree that the pace of the show is fairly slow, I would argue that this show is anything but boring, especially when you consider the fact that I managed to binge-watch 16 episodes of this show over a course of a weekend, where I had to prepare for two presentations, turn in a problem set, write a ten page lab report, and work a nine hour shift for my internship.Clearly, this is proof that this drama is so intriguing that the actual work I had to do felt secondary in importance.
Regardless, for those who embrace this drama, this drama invokes the same feeling that you have on a cold winter night, where you are wrapped in a blanket and sipping hot cocoa, while you are watching snowflakes fall to the ground one by one as they cover your entire front yard in snow. This is a drama that unashamedly embraces nostalgia and you see virtually every character in this show getting back together with someone they cared for in high school and there is something oh so satisfying about two grown adults choosing to embrace the love they had for each other when they were teenagers and see them embark on a path to continue that story. Hae Won’s and Eun Soeb’s relationship is so beautiful and heartwarming on so many levels. The way that Eun Soeb fixes the streetlight, so Hae Won can safely go back to her home,or even how Hae Won along with Eun Soeb’s mother, is the only person in the  whole town who seem to be genuinely concerned about Eun Soeb venturing out into the mountain alone. These two truly embrace fluff, but the way they do so is eloquent and cute all at the same time. Their hugs and kisses convey so much meaning in every scene. Park Min Young and Seo Kang Joon have earth shattering chemistry with each other in this series and for the love between their characters to be truly felt, you don’t feel the need to define their relationship as husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend. These two love for simply the sake of loving.
Underlying these layers of romance and unrequited love is also a telling story about the journey of three women ( Hae Won, her mother, and her aunt) nursing the wounds of toxic masculinity. A major focus of the show is Intimate Partner Violence and how complex the feelings of victims can be. Once, I volunteered at a domestic violence shelter, where one of the volunteers told me that abusive partners can also be the most loving and that many victims struggle to reconcile their love for their partner with the clear endangerment this person has on their very ability to live. We see Hae Won’s mother and her aunt reconcile these feelings of extreme guilt over the accidental murder of Hae Won’s father with the abuse that they have faced. The two trying to move on from a complicated and traumatic past is one of the most profound narratives that this show has chosen to focus on. The only place where this drama falters is how Hae Won confronts this issue as it is not entirely made clear by the writers whether she was aware of what was happening in her family, or if she truly was oblivious to everything because both her mother and aunt have chosen to be be distant to her.
If it isn’t already obvious, there are a lot of deep conversations that the characters are having in this drama and there is a sense of melancholy that permeates this drama,  but Im Hui and Lee Jang Wu, Eun Soeb’s sister and best friend respectively bring so much light heartedness and humor to this drama. Lee Jae Wook, who plays Lee Jang Wu, is an actor I’ve been closely following for a long time since his days on Extraordinary You, and he shines as an adorable quirky civil servant, who finds joy in living ordinarily despite going to Seoul National University (Korea’s Harvard).  Seeing his relationship with Eun Sil always left me with a stupid smile on my face. I’ll Go To You When the Weather is Nice is not a perfect drama maybe because it is too stuck in the past of these characters that some conflicts seem to be rooted in petty high school drama , but it’s still a drama that is beautiful even despite its cracks. If the entire drama can be summed up in one phrase, I would use the following quote uttered by Cha Yun Taek in the show, “ [Love] It’s when my cold hand touched your cold hand and we both become warm”. This drama in essence is about finding the warmth in our lives.

The 13 Best Korean Dramas Of 2020
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/the-13-best-korean-dramas-of-2020/
The 13 Best Korean Dramas Of 2020
Bae Suzy and Nam Joo-hyuk partner up in ‘Start-Up.’
Although 2020 will make the history books for all the wrong reasons, it was a great year for Korean dramas. With a slew of big budget hits and small quirky stories, k-dramas offered plenty of innovative entertainment to help viewers happily pass pandemic time.
Every drama viewer may have a different list of favorites, but here are a few 2020 dramas that stood out in terms of originality, subject matter and execution.
Park Seo-joon created one of the year’s most memorable k-drama characters in ‘Itaewon Class.’
Itaewon Class
The year started off with the quirky hit Itaewon Class, in which Park Seo-joon’s character overcomes so many odds that he naturally sympathizes with those who society may shun. When opening a cafe he hires employees that others might not and those choices contribute to his success. Park’s generous character is one of the year’s most likable and the drama also features top-notch performances by Kim Da-mi, Kwon Nara, Yoo Jae-Myung and Ahn Bo-hyun.
Why see it? If you’ve never been to Seoul’s international neighborhood of Itaewon, this drama takes you there. The drama provides plenty of feel-good moments and a great soundtrack, including a contribution by BTS member V.
Kim Hee-ae and Park Hae-joon star in ‘The World of The Married.’
World of the Married
Although this drama has not yet made it to all international audiences, it was a huge hit in Korea, enjoying both critical success and nationwide ratings of 28.37%. World of the Married, an adaptation of the BBC series Dr. Foster, stars Kim Hae-ae. Kim plays a doctor who thinks her life is perfect until she learns that her husband, played by Park Hae-joon, has been cheating on her. Even worse, all their friends know.
Why see it? Kim won Best Actress at the Baeksang Awards for playing the drama’s protagonist Ji Sun-woo and the drama was a breakout hit for supporting actress Han Seo-hee. There’s also the guilty pleasure of watching a woman scorned exact revenge on those who betrayed her.
The legal drama ‘Hyena’ starred Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon.
Hyena
The drama’s leading characters, played by Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon, each have their own approach to practicing law. She’s a scrappy small-time lawyer with questionable ethics and he’s a self-satisfied high-profile lawyer at a top firm. Despite their differences—and getting off to a bad start when she scams him—they turn out to be good for each other.
Why see it? Ju delivers a pitch-perfect performance, with his every twitch and grimace creating an unforgettable character.  Ju and Kim have undeniable chemistry that sizzles through episodes of fast-paced high-stakes legal entanglements.
Bae Doona played a zombie-fighting nurse in the second season of ‘Kingom.’
Kingdom 2
The second season of this historical zombie drama was even better than the first. Kingdom 2 also stars Ju Ji-hoon as the prince trying to save his country from a zombie invasion as well as inner court corruption. What makes the second season better than the first is a larger role for actress Bae Doona, whose character takes time out from nursing the sick to battle the undead.
Why see it: It’s a zombie story with a historical and moral twist.
Start Up
Nam Joo-Hyuk and Bae Suzy star in this story of a small tech start-up that gets a chance to compete on a bigger stage. When Bae’s character Seo Dal-mi was young she received encouraging letters from a man named Nam Do-san, but the letters were really written by Kim Seon-ho’s character Han Ji-pyeong. When a grown-up Dal-mi decides to find the real Do-san, played by Nam, Ji-pyeong asks Do-san to pretend he really wrote the letters. Do-san and Dal-mi are perfect for each other but their budding relationship is based on a lie.
Why see it? The story of how the start-up gets started is interesting. Each of the actors—from the leads to the supporting cast— is imperfectly endearing and Kim wins this year’s unofficial prize for being the most appealing second lead.
Lee jun-ki is a potential serial killer married to the detective played by Moon Chae-won in ‘Flower … [] of Evil.’
Flower of Evil
What would you do if you found out you were married to a serial killer? It might be happening to Moon Chae-won’s police detective character in Flower of Evil. Her devoted husband, played by Lee Jun-ki, has a mysterious past that ties him to a serial killer. Did he also commit murders? If he is a serial killer, does his wife love him enough to look past the incriminating clues?
Why see it? Although some of the drama’s plot occasionally veers into the illogical, the relationship between the leads is so charismatic that the drama acquired a loyal and enthusiastic following. The mystery is sufficiently complex and Lee’s tortured performance as the suspected serial killer is mesmerizing.
Park So-dam played Park Bo-gum’s makeup artist in ‘Record of Youth.’
Record of Youth
Record of Youth features ambitious likable protagonists trying to find their place in a highly competitive world. Park Bo-gum plays a model so charming it’s hard to imagine why he’s not already a success at the story’s start. Park So-dam plays a talented make-up artist with dreams. She’s also a devoted fan of his modeling career.
Why see it? Park Bo-gum’s character is as bright as a shiny penny, ever optimistic and upbeat, despite not having much support for his dreams. Watching Park So-dam act is always a pleasure and the real star of the drama might be Han Jin-hee, who plays Park Bo-gum’s supportive grandfather.
Seo Ye-ji aggressively pursues Kim Soo-hyun in ‘It’s Okay Not To Be Okay.’
It’s Okay Not To Be Okay
Easily the most visually appealing drama of 2020, It’s Okay Not To Be Okay stars two of k-drama’s most photogenic actors Seo Ye-ji and Kim Soo-hyun as a twisted children’s book author and the psychiatric nurse she needs to calm her nightmares. Not only are the actors beautiful, but the drama’s graphics, cinematography and costumes are also gorgeous.
Why see it? The drama explores the topics of autism and the mental scars created by early trauma. Oh Jung-se’s performance as Kim’s autistic brother was one of the best of the year.
‘The Good Detective’ is a fast-paced crime thriller starring Son Hyun-joo and Jang Seung-jo.
The Good Detective
The Good Detective delivers a Scandi-noir vibe with its insightful character development plus some over-the-top, superhero police action scenes. The drama stars Son Hyun-joo, who might have the most expressive face of any k-drama actor, and Jang Seung-jo as a detective whose super-power is having a fortune.
Why see it? The Good Detective is an involving police procedural with top-rate performances. Oh Jung-se plays a hard-hearted villain, a dramatically different role than his vulnerable character in It’s Okay Not To Be Okay.
Nana plays a woman who pursues politics for a paycheck despite Park Sung-hoon’s objections.
Into The Ring
The wry comedy stars Nana, formerly a member of k-pop group After School, and Park Sung-hoon, who recently played a convincing but comical killer in Psychopath Diary. Nana plays a plucky unemployed woman who runs for office, motivated largely by the paycheck, but also from a sense of justice. Although Park initially finds her irritating, he eventually helps her fight local corruption.
Why see it? Nana is so charismatic in this role, viewers may want to see everything she’s ever done. She and Park develop a low-key lovable comic rapport that keeps a story about local politics happily enjoyable.
‘My Dangerous Wife’ is a cat-and-mouse mystery within the story of a marriage.
My Dangerous Wife
In this dark comedy Choi Won-young plays a chef who plans to murder his wealthy wife, so he can inherit her money, but when he arrives home with a poisoned bottle of wine he finds she has been kidnapped. The note the kidnappers left behind warns him not to contact the police or they will kill his wife. Should he? It sounds like an opportunity.
Why see it: Interesting plot twists and turns make this drama fascinating to the very last episode. The complex storyline involves a mistress, a mysterious old friend, a detective with a suspicious wife, and a set of curious next door neighbors with secrets of their own.
Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin experience an impossible love in ‘Crash Landing On You.’
Crash Landing On You
Crash Landing On You, which first aired in Dec. 2019, successfully introduced a wider international audience to the joys of k-drama viewing. The mega-hit, starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, follows the story of a South Korean heiress who accidentally lands in North Korea and is helped by a North Korean officer at the risk of his own life.
Why see it? Everything about the drama is top-notch—the cinematography, the romantic storyline and the excellent performances from the lead and supporting actors. The drama also offers some interesting insight into North Korean daily life.
Shin Sung-rok stars in the paranormal thriller ‘Kairos.’
Kairos
Kairos is a tense paranormal thriller about karmic debt. In this drama two people who live in different times stumble on a supernatural way to talk and thus untangle their preventable personal tragedies. Shin Sung-rok plays a callous businessman whose daughter is kidnapped. Lee Se-young plays a woman whose mother disappears. Together they must change fate but they can’t connect in their own time. This plot device was used in the film The Call and the k-drama Signal, but it feels fresh in Kairos, given the carefully crafted moments of suspense and some intriguing performances.
Why see it? Both Shin and supporting actor Ahn Bo Hyun do an excellent job of portraying men who question what they once held sacred.
Which dramas made your list?

PUBLISHED ARTICLE #1
Tumblr media
https://push.abs-cbn.com/2020/5/8/fresh-scoops/she-portrays-the-mistress-in-world-of-the-married-25724
International artists are impossible to interview for a feature. Thus, we rely on what on what the internet has to offer. Some articles, including this one, are purely based on research from credible sources and websites.
She portrays the mistress in 'World of the Married'—but we can't hate her too much!
By Thesia May Molines
The World of the Married took the Internet by storm due to its plot twists that will surely leave you hooked and intrigued. As they binge-watch the drama series, some fans can’t help but stop and stare at the stunning girl who plays the challenging role of the mistress.
Although you’ll probably hate her character in the hit Korean series, you’ll surely be drawn to her in real life! Fans are enthralled since this young lady holds so much promise in the acting scene.
Let’s dig deeper why Han So Hee is worthy to be the next Korean girl crush:
Who is Han So Hee?
Lee So-Hee or fondly known as Han So Hee is a 25-year-old actress and model hailing from Ulsan, South Korea. She was born on November 24, 1994. So for K-drama fans that are astrology lovers as well—yes, she is a Scorpio. Those who are under this zodiac sign are known for being passionate and resourceful. No wonder she was able to portray her role in The World of The Married Couple as Yeo Da Kyung so well!
She graduated from Ulsan High School where she is known for being a timid and quiet student. In a previous interview, she shared that she went to the same school with the famous lead actress of Hi Bye, Mama! Kim Tae Hee.
She studied in Sejong University with a Major in Arts.
Before her success
Contrary to what others may believe, she didn’t have an easy life. Han So Hee had to work her way to success.
This risk-taker chose to let her schooling take a back seat to pursue her acting career at an early age. She decided to move to Seoul and try her luck with only a little amount of money in her pocket.
She had to endure days and nights of non-stop working at a bar in Gangnam to suffice her daily needs. Not wanting to live her life like that for the rest of her days, Han So Hee endured hardships until it all finally paid off.
She revealed in an interview that if she hadn’t endured those days of making ends meet by working endlessly, she would not have achieved the success she is enjoying right now.
Career Beginnings
Before making it big in the acting scene, Han So Hee already made a name for herself as a model. With an impressive height of 169 centimeters and a face that is truly a sight to behold, she became one of the most sought-after models in Korea.-
She started getting noticed in a Ritz Cracker commercial in 2016. Since then, she received numerous commercial offers from big companies. Han So Hee was also given the privilege to be in several magazine covers for some fashion magazines in South Korea.
In the May 2020 issue of Grazia, the stunning young actress shows off her charm and natural beauty in their photo shoot.
Aside from her modeling gigs, she also appeared in numerous music videos. Some of these are music videos of the famous boy band group in South Korea called SHINee in their song Tell Me What To Do and The Hardest Part by soloist Roy Kim.
The successful actress she is now
Han So Hee made her acting debut in 2017 for the drama Reunited Worlds. That opened doors for her to land several lead roles for Korean television series such as Money Flower and 100 Days My Prince.
Although she’s been around in the industry for quite some time now, It was The World of the Married that paved her way to stardom.
When she first read the script of the series, she immediately felt sorry for her character. Wanting to understand where Da Kyung is coming from, the actress had to focus and put herself in her shoes.
According to soompi.com, when the actress was asked to compare herself from the role she portrays in the drama, Han So Hee said that her character Da Kyung is reserved and aloof while she is the type who likes talking to people.
Now that she is on her way to becoming even bigger in the acting scene, Han So Hee wishes to be like her co-star Kim Hee Ae (who plays the protagonist wife). She said that after seeing her act from up close, she admired how Kim Hee Ae can portray strong characters even more.
Because of her convincing portrayal as the mistress, Han So Hee receives hate comments on her social media accounts. Thus, she jokes that hopefully one day she will land a role that everybody would love.
Social Media Presence
Han So Hee has currently over 1.6 million followers on Instagram as of writing. It is where she posts photos of her daily life, with jaw-dropping close-up selfies to random stills of her cats and scribbles.
Aren’t you convinced yet that this stunning beauty is more than meets the eye?
Fans are surely excited to see more of her soon!

Nightmare High (2016)
Dir. Hyun Moon-Sub
⚠️ Spoilers !! ⚠️
Tumblr media
i started watching this because i keep seeing this on Netflix and my curiosity got the best of me hehe. also because i’m quite impressed with Kim So-Hyun’s acting skills and she’s also one of my favorite Korean actors, because of her performance in Love Alarm (2019).
Tumblr media
lmao so i finished this show a couple of days ago and i was supposed to post this after but i decided to collect my thoughts first so i could make this post work haha. i tend to forget what i just watched five minutes after watching it sometimes (its not a quirky thing ;-; i tend to get surprised that i just finished another show that i forget what just happened lol).
anyways, i kinda liked this drama, though i felt like it was a bit of a slow-burn, it showed what the characters were like if they were given the chance to play god, which led to them abusing it then wanting it to stop when they get overwhelmed by it. here’s a list of my thoughts on each characters’ stories :v
1. Kim Seul-Gi
Tumblr media
the name reminds me so much of Seulgi (Kang Seulgi) from Red Velvet lmaoo. Kim Seulgi (Seo Shin-ae) was considered as their class’ “outcast”, with her classmates going out of their way to talk about how she’s invisible and that she’s worthless before proceeding to mess with her stuff. being fed up with her bullies, she decides to go to the counseling office and talk to Mr. Han/Han Bong-Gu (Uhm Ki-Joon) who gives her the layout of their classroom and a red pen, telling her to connect her name with a classmates name with a red line if she wants to be friends with them. after trying this, her classmates start acting nice to her, which eventually led to her not being given the time to be alone and to be with the people that she wants to be with, which then led to her asking Mr. Han if he could reverse the whole thing and go back to normal.
Seul-Gi’s story was honestly a bit sad and frustrating with me. this is why you shouldn’t give people the chance to play god or the chance to control their fate and their surroundings, it just won’t end well. the girl just wanted to have friends that genuinely care for her. the solution that Mr. Han gave her was addicting at first but when it all backfired on her, she decided that maybe it wasn’t for her at all. sadly, she had no other choice but to be trapped in that mirror.
Seul-Gi deserved better :<
2. Oh Ki-Chul
Tumblr media
Oh Ki-Chul (Baek Sung-Do) is a student that participates in wrestling/boxing/fighting matches. (??) after a while of not participating, he stumbles upon two students that are fighting and decides to break it up. he was then met with what looks like a student who was also the group’s ‘leader’ telling him that one of the rules of fighting was to never butt-in on someone else’s fight. he was then dared to participate in a fight but turned down the offer as he planned not to do it until he graduates.
after a series of provoking and starting to participate again in other fights. Oh Ki-Chul and Mr. Han spoke about him joining fights, before Mr. Han puts Ki-Chul in a trance to help him see if he’ll win or not. he decides to use this to his advantage, memorizing what he has to do in order to win his fights in the future. eventually, he too had to sign a contract with his blood- like every victim of Mr. Han’s to continue receiving this kind of privilege which eventually led him to being trapped in a mirror too.
my main takeaway from Ki-Chul’s story was that it was kinda weird that Mr. Han just watched from the sidelines instead of holding Ki-Chul back and try to change his mind into not participating in the fight. sadly, he’s not like other Homeroom teachers. for others, they’d probably say that he’s provoking these students into wanting more.. but i think that he’s actually giving them the taste of their own medicine if they decide to abuse their desires if it were given to them. but i still think that Mr. Han’s a bad guy lmao duh.
3. Ahn Si-Yeon
Tumblr media
first of all, i think that Ahn Si-Yeon (Kim Da-Ye) is so adorable !! her character gives me fangirl vibes ✨ sadly, she had to fall for Mr. Han’s trap too. it first started when her classmates accused her of lying to them about her having a boyfriend who lives in Boston, with them purposely making her “overhear” their conversations about someone they know that lies about their personal life. i didn’t really get why she had to lie though, i’m quite convinced that she did that to gain more friends. sadly, they had to pry and pry to the point that she had to find a solution to their nosiness, she started it anyway. Si-Yeon went to the counseling room to talk to Mr. Han, where she was given a notebook to write down her desires. now this part gave me Death Note (2006) vibes.. but with less people dying from heart attacks lmao.
after writing down on the ✨ magical ✨ notebook, her ‘boyfriend’ from Boston suddenly appears out of nowhere, apologizing for taking so long to arrive and be there with her. surprised with her wishes being granted by the notebook, Mr. Han gives her the option to sign a contract with her blood or everything goes back to the way it was.
Si-Yeon then continues making ‘things’ happen through her notebook, until she decided that she didn’t want to continue using the notebook anymore and that she wanted everything to go back to normal. unfortunately, burning the notebook didn’t do anything which eventually caused her to be trapped in the mirror as well.
4. Chun Jae-Soo
Tumblr media
duuuude, my fujoshi side is jumping out i hate myself lmao anywayss i can’t help but ship Jae-Soo (Jang Kyoung-Up) to Ko Ki-Tae (Ji Eun-Sung), they all so give me Kaneki and Hide vibes from Tokyo Ghoul (2014) !!
anyways, Jae-Soo’s story was pretty sad for me but it was kind of a slow burn? idk, maybe i wasn’t paying much attention or time went by slowly for me that day.. but he got so dependent on the drinks that Mr. Han was giving him that he eventually forgot everyone, even his bestfriend! which made him resort to writing the important details of his life on his arms and on the chair of his desk. i was so sad when Ki-Tae saw Jae-Soo’s arms :< he definitely knew what was wrong with his best friend but couldn’t think of a way to help him without the other thinking that he’s prying. ngl though, i honestly thought that Ki-Tae was using Jae-Soo at first but was then convinced that they were actually best friends.
Jae-Soo’s dependence on the drink eventually made him forget his name, even where he was and where his classroom was. which gave Mr. Han the advantage to trap him inside the mirror as well.
5. Do Do-Hee
Tumblr media
Do-Hee (Kim Ji-An) is considered as the queen in her class and was even in their school, Yosan High’s advertisement poster. unfortunately, her boyfriend, Lee Jong-Suk (Kwon Young-Min) cheated on her with a student from the lower level. she was then replaced on the poster with the same girl, which fueled her anger and jealousy towards the new couple. thinking that her beauty is disappearing and she’s being replaced as the prettiest girl in their class, Do-Hee stumbles upon an app that gives her the look she wants with one click. unfortunately, it doesn’t last long and she’ll have to sign a contract with Mr. Han so she could continue using it.
Do-Hee’s features start to get more enhanced, with female students in their school asking her how she got and maintained the far from natural look.. which eventually caused her and Jong-Suk to get back together. after a few weeks of dating, Do-Hee catches Jong-Suk talking to the same girl and retaliated by pouring water all over the two.
unfortunately, her beauty also disappears when her phone’s battery dies and she’ll have to constantly find a way to get an updated phone. the app eventually sent her into a mental breakdown, making her more obsessed with her looks, which gave Mr. Han.. again, an advantage to trap her in the mirror too.
Tumblr media
overall, i think the show was pretty good !! Kim So-Hyun and Lee Min-Hyuk have great chemistry and i ship them a lot ;-; though i kinda think this show was a slow burn and there were parts that were kinda boring for me.
it was also kinda creepy and sad for me since these students clearly have problems but their homeroom teacher that should be mediating this situation and guiding them to the right path is the person who’s actually leading them to his trap, which was so frustrating to watch since Ye-Rim (Kim So-Hyun) and Sang-Woo (Lee Min-Hyuk) were so close to finding out what was actually happening. sadly, Mr. Han is waaaay too ahead of them. kinda surprised of the plot twist too where the camera Sang-Woo was using was supposed to tell about people’s lies, kinda reminds me of that TikTok POV i saw the other day.

THE PARK FAMILY
mother - lee ha-yoon ( Song Yoon-ah )  father - park hyun-jae ( deceased ) ( Ji Jin Hee )  grandmother ( dad’s side ) - bak soo-jin ( Nam Ji-Ae )  grandfather ( dad’s side ) - park byung-hun ( Chun Ho-Jin )  grandmother ( mom’s side ) lee min-jung ( Kim Mi Kyung )
Minnie & Her Appa: From the day she was born, it was obvious that Minnie was going to be closer to her father than she was to her mother. At least, that was the way her parents always told it to her when she was old enough to understand. Her mom joked that she used to cry for her dad at night instead of her. While Minnie did love both of her parents equally, it was obvious that she truly did have a closer relationship with her father. Maybe it would have sounded lame, but he was like her best friend. Not even that, but her hero. The time that she spent with him meant more than anything in the world to her because it was amazing to her that he still managed to make time for his family despite his busy job. He may not have been around as often as he would have liked to be, but he never failed to be there for his family. He was kind and gentle and understanding. He was also funny, in that stupid dad kind of way that most people find embarrassing, but honestly, Minnie would give up everything in her life just to hear one more dumb dad joke from him. To this day, Minnie is convinced that she wouldn’t be as gentle as she is if it weren’t for him. He taught her that kindness isn’t weakness; that it’s better to remain soft in a world that is filled with so much hate. He made her promise to always remember that, no matter how hard things may get or how ugly the world may seem, there is beauty in the world and it’s better to be happy. The day he was ripped from the world was the worst day of her life and she knows that ten years from now, twenty years from now... forever from now, nothing will ever feel the same again because he isn’t in the world anymore.
Minnie & Her Umma: To put it mildly, Minnie’s relationship with her mother is a rocky one, but it wasn’t always that way. Sure, she may have been a daddy’s girl, but she loved her mother just as much and while her dad was her hero, Minnie wanted to be more like her mom. A lot of Minnie’s time was spent at her mother’s art studio and dance studio and she never would have fallen in love with art if not for her mother. Minnie also had a lot of respect for her mom, for always staying so strong and having faith in her husband even when he was on a case that could potentially get him hurt. When Minnie’s father wouldn’t be home for days, her mother would always take Minnie on some sort of adventure to keep her mind off it. They’d paint each other’s nails and tell stories and pig out on all of their favorite Korean foods. Minnie used to say that her mother’s laugh could cure any disease... and she’d give anything to hear that laugh again. Ever since her father was killed, Minnie’s mom has become a shell of the woman that she used to be. While her studios are still open, she mostly has other people run them and some days, she doesn’t even get out of bed. Part of the reason that Minnie acts so strong all of the time is because she felt she had to be that way for her mother... and as much as she hates to think it, there’s a small part of her that resents her for it because it should have been the other way around. While her mom was crumbling, Minnie had to pick the up the pieces and she was the kid... She shouldn’t have had to be the parent. Yes, she still loves her mom and she worries about her every single day, but there’s still some anger that she carries around with her and she doesn’t quite know how to shake it, which makes it difficult for her to even talk to her mom much these days. It’s also a big part of why she hasn’t gone home... because it’s like her dad’s ghost is everywhere and she can’t handle it.
Minnie & Her Halmeoni ( dad’s side ): Often, Minnie can be heard talking with her friends or even people she doesn’t know about her halmeoni and while she has two of them, her appa’s umma is the one that she is closest to, the woman who is almost as much like a mother to her as her actual mother. When she talks about her halmeoni’s famous yakgwa, she is talking about Soo-jin’s recipe. Minnie tries to talk to her halmeoni as often as is possible because it’s the one she feels like she can be as open and honest as she can’t be with most people, despite still not being one hundred percent honest with her.
Minnie & Her Hal-abeoji ( dad’s side ):
Minnie & Her Halmeoni ( mom’s side ):

Quaranthings: Korean Dramas
It’s been a while, Tumblr. LOL I haven’t posted in a while – but we are living in a time of pandemic. I have never thought such day would come but here we are.
It has been 41 days since Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) was implemented in Manila – and I have managed to catch up on my Korean drama backlog.
Thanks to streaming sites like Viu and Netflix, I have spent countless hours just catching up on the latest dramas (The King: Eternal Monarch, Itaewon Class) and the ones I have not finished watching (Mr. Sunshine, Reply 1997, Go Back Couple, Kill Me, Heal Me, My Love from the Stars). I also found time to rewatch my favorites (Secret Garden, Innocent Man).
The last one I watched was Mr. Sunshine. The writer, Kim Eun Sook, tells the story of a Joseon slave-turned-American soldier named Eugene Choi and a noble named Go Ae Sin – and the people around them: the mysterious samurai Go Dong Mae; the rich playboy Kim Hee Seong; and the beautiful, rich heiress/double agent named Hina Kudo. Set in the early years of the Korean Empire (led by Emperor Gojong), the drama depicted the political turbulence of the time: the traditional Joseon ways clashing with that of imperialists as well as the personal struggles of each character. Then there’s storge, eros, philia, and agape - I’ll probably write another review of that because in terms of writing, I think this is the best Kim Eun Sook drama.
I have been meaning to write something like this, but I guess I was inspired to share with the world why I love Korean dramas – like it really is a hill I would die on anytime.
Some weeks ago, a Filipino director openly tweeted his disdain for Korean dramas. In his words, he said that Filipino movies and tv are “doomed” because of “K-drama galore: faux Cinderella stories with belofied whiter than white actors. And it’s all about love in the midst of pandemic.”
 LMFAO. I had to laugh.
It came from a director with reputable filmography – I mean I loved two (2) of his films for their social commentary but I have to ask.
How many Korean dramas have you watched – LOL don’t tell me you only watched Crash Landing on You.
HELLO, ITAEWON CLASS WAS IN THE TOP 10. DID YOU WATCH THAT? Did you watch the rags-to-riches story of Park Saeroyi and his quest for justice to defeat the biggest food company, Janga Corporation?
Have you watched Sky Castle? The compelling story of rich families and their schemes to get their children into the best universities?
How about the Reply series? A nostalgic drama that tells the story of families, youth, and the times they lived in – 1994, 1997, 1988 – the nostalgia was fucking rich. I especially enjoyed 1994 and 1997.
Did you check out Another Oh Hae Young: a woman struggling to come into terms with her personal insecurities? Or have you picked up on It’s Okay, That’s Love: a romantic drama that properly tackled mental illness (the lead had schizophrenia).
From personal experience and the vast filmography of Korean dramas I have seen, let me point out why Korean dramas are the best – and why they’re so fucking addicting. I would have to say that this is not a research paper but rather a lengthy analysis based on my 12-year experience as a Korean drama enthusiast.
 1.      Creative value
Every drama starts with a great plot.
Sure, many Korean dramas are romantic. In fact, most of the Korean dramas I have seen in the early 2000s are romantic: Autumn in my Heart; Stairway to Heaven; Winter Sonata; Full House; My Name is Kim Sam Soon; and Princess Hours. There’s also Memories of Bali; I’m Sorry I Love You; and Coffee Prince. These dramas actually launched the Hallyu (Korean wave) that we know today – and their plots have the typical Korean drama romantic equation: guy meets girl – they don’t get along at first – then they fall in love – misunderstandings (or separation) ensues – reunited – fall in love again – they get married or end up together (or a lead dies). Then there are the non-romantic ones (historical): Jewel in the Palace and Jumong.
But as time went on, you see that the genres become varied – we started seeing action dramas (one of my favorites was Time Between Dog and Wolf) and medical dramas. Then there were dramas that also featured how Korean dramas were made (The World We Live In).
Korean dramas have varying plots that get recycled in many instances but with great plots also come characterization. The characters we see in dramas remind us of real people – we always relate to a character and we all get frustrated when they make stupid decisions (the Noble Idiot Syndrome) that really do not make sense. At the end of the day, we want happy endings for those who deserve happiness – we want justice served, we want closures, etc. because that’s how humans are.
In many romantic dramas, plots are reused but no character is the same. They would have similar traumas but never the same, carbon-copied character. There are villains you want to kill and then there are villains you sympathize with – because you realize that humans are multilayered, complicated creatures.
 2.      Production value
Another observation I have with Korean dramas is their careful attention to details. When writers create the script, they somewhat have actors in mind to play the character. In Korean dramas, they don’t really care about love teams. In the Philippines, we produce dramas based on the hottest pairs. In Korea, they don’t give a shit about that. Dramas are produced with the intention of creating a meaningful production so actors are chosen based on whether the writers and producers think they can bring their characters to life, not because they are the hottest commodity. In some dramas, actors have to audition, but in many instances, scripts are sent to actors with potential to perfectly portray the character.
Prior to filming, writers, actors, and production staff would spend a day or two in story conferences – actors would have the opportunity to discuss with everyone how he or she thinks his/her character is like. The directors and writers would provide their input on how the characters should talk, act, etc. Actors would also take the extra mile to learn a skill or two for the characters they played. They would have dialect coaches, language instructors, etc. Writers would consult with professionals – for instance, in many medical or legal dramas, they would hire doctors or lawyers on board to verify accuracy of terms. During broadcast, you would even see the jargon on screen to simplify them for the audience. In historical dramas, you would also see the terms used (in Chinese characters) and explain them in hangul.
During filming, you’d see how the staff has placed much attention on details – from the wardrobe to the set. You would also see themes, symbols, etc. The production aspect is really like how movies are: vivid, deliberate, beautiful. Who would’ve thought red pinwheels would make me tear up?
Each drama has a particular soundtrack – can I just say that Korean dramas have the best soundtrack. Each song played in a specific scene perfectly conveys the mood and feelings of the character. I have cried so many times listening to Park Hyo Shin’s “Snow Flower” (I’m Sorry I Love You) or Ji Sun’s ”Goodbye Without Saying Goodbye) (My Name is Kim Sam Soon). On my Spotify account you would see I have played Goblin, DOTS, and CLOY OSTs countless times.
In the past, dramas are not really pre-produced (meaning script came a week or two before filming). There are dramas wherein halfway through the broadcast, they had to switch writers because the earlier writer had a falling out with the production – so you’d see that the quality suffers (story plots would go crazy lol). There are dramas wherein they had to replace the actors because of scandals or accidents. In the last 5 years however, Korean dramas have become pre-produced: meaning the dramas will be filmed 6 months-2 years before being broadcasted. I guess this aspect has contributed to the fact that many Korean dramas are already available on streaming sites.
 3.      Cultural value
Each drama gives us a slice of the Korean culture – food, drink, skincare, attraction, and history. And noraebang (karaoke). Every romcom Korean drama has to have a scene at the noraebang...or jimjilbang (sauna).
Modern and traditional Korean dramas have to feature food: Korean barbecue, stew, side dishes. LOL you name it. There’s also soju, beer, and makgeoli. BEER AND CHICKEN.
In most modern Korean dramas, makeovers are a must. You would see product placements of known Korean products: Laneige, Etude House, Nature Republic, etc. The characters would go shopping in a particular shop like The North Face. Their coffee dates would be in one of these (Caffe Bene, Dal.Komm, HOLLYS, Zoo Café, Mango Six). They would buy their cakes or bread from Paris Baguette or Tous Les Jours.
Then there are road trips – many Korean dramas would feature a particular attraction, province, or city. Who can forget Nami Island (thanks Winter Sonata) or Namsan Seoul Tower (Boys Over Flower) or Petite France (Secret Garden, My Love from the Stars)? Of course, you can’t forget Busan (Reply 1997) or Jeju (Warm and Cozy) or Gangwon-do. It is definitely a K-drama fangirl’s dream to be able to visit in one of these places so we can relive our favorite Korean drama moments.
All of Korean dramas I have seen put emphasis on family – the importance of filial piety is always highlighted. The characters are often portrayed as dutiful daughters or sons. Conflicts often ensue when the character is challenged to choose between the parents or the love of his/her life (well in most Korean dramas that’s the case lol). Many dramas portray characters who try to be the good daughter-in-law and yet nothing is ever good enough. Then there are subtle flexes on Korea as an emerging superpower as seen by drama characters (chaebols) who head conglomerates. There is always a character who is filthy rich and can afford a billionaire lifestyle. Product placements include big companies like Samsung, Hyundai, etc.
Slice-of-life dramas also depict the realities in Korean society. Because This is My First Life and Something in the Rain aptly depicted the realities of harassment in the workplace from a woman’s experience. Many Korean dramas also relay harsh realities: meritocracy in the workplace; young adults juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet, etc.; even real estate situations are featured. Often you would find characters renting a small room because that’s all they can afford. From the dramas you would also notice that Koreans are not very kind towards single mothers or orphans. Then of course, there’s the North and South Korea situation: Crash Landing on You, Doctor Stranger, Spy Myeong-Wol, Descendants of the Sun are a few dramas that discussed this theme. The Reply series is a nostalgia drama featuring families that lived through some of important events in South Korea like the Seoul Olympics (1988), Asian financial crisis (1997), Sampoong Department Store collapse (1995), and the historic World Cup (2002).
Korean historical dramas are also interesting on their own – I guess until now, the Japanese occupation of Korea is still a sensitive matter for Koreans. Many of the dramas that feature such themes always depict the resilience and resolve of Koreans as they try to fight off the enemy. Yes, the scenes are depicted artistically, and the thought lingers long after the episode is over.
In terms of marketing, the government has also been proactive. With the Korean Wave (Hallyu), Korean dramas, as well as films, music, food, etc. have become an important commodity overseas. In 2016, Korean Culture Center wrote that Descendants of the Sun was sold to 27 countries, posting a profit of over KRW 10 billion (Php 412 million). The government acknowledges the important contribution of Korean dramas in tourism. Numerous papers have already been published showing the effect of hallyu in the South Korea tourism industry.
To make the long story short:
Korean dramas have gone beyond “faux Cinderella stories with belofied whiter than white actors”.  I mean, if you want to produce a quality drama, it takes time and effort. Personally it has become a great escape from the realities I face. I do not welcome opinions that clearly spring out of snobbery and disdain for another person’s craft. Perhaps the director can look beyond the Top 10 (since that’s what he mentioned) and check out the wide selection on Netflix. Viu is also a great platform (I’ll start on World of the Married – been hearing and reading about it lol)
Hallyu did not flourish overnight, and the Korean drama industry – while a great model to cite – is also not perfect. There have been numerous cases and instances when staff are overworked or not paid long after the production is over. The #MeToo movement has also exposed some actors who have harassed fellow actors. If we want Filipino dramas to enjoy the same spotlight as that of the Korean dramas, we should be frank about the outputs we have had. We have potential, but it really is up to the decision-makers (at least from the network perspective since it’s all about profits and star value rather than quality production in the Philippines) to come up with a formula that would revitalize Filipino dramas. I can’t say the same for Filipino films because we have great films – the dramas need much work to be profitable. I mean, are we really satisfied with a few dramas being sold overseas? When will we produce dramas that are at par with our Korean chingus? If you want Filipino dramas to be streamed on Netflix or Hulu or Apple TV – maybe we can look at genres beyond police brutality or infidelity or hacienderos harboring a secret child somewhere.
Anyway, Korean dramas are awesome – and that’s the tea.

[TRANS-ENG] 2019.05.02 IU and Lee Sun Gyun’s My Mister Interview with Japanese Cable Television Station Network, J:COM
Tumblr media
Q. Please introduce Park Dong Hoon’s and Lee Ji An’s characters.
Lee Sun Gyun: Park Dong Hoon is a structural engineer. He prefers stability and peace, he is serious and somewhat sorrowful.
IU: Since Lee Ji An has grown up in a hostile/ unfortunate environment, she can not trust people and feels despair at the state of the world. A young character who is trying to protect herself by creating walls around her.
Tumblr media
Q. I think you must felt the pressure of working with Kim Won Seok PD who has hit dramas like <Misaeng> and <Signal>, but what was the main reason for you to take part in this drama?
Lee Sun Gyun: I think the director felt more pressure than we did. The reason why I decided to appear in this drama was because I had always wanted to work together with Kim Won Seok director. It was an honor for me to receive an offer from him. The filming process was also fun.
IU: Although it can’t be compared with the director’s, I also felt the pressure that “as a part of the drama production team, I shall not become a hindrance.”
Q. During filming, have you ever felt “It was a good decision to choose this work”?
Lee Sun Gyun: I always felt that during filming. It was also memorable since I was able to meet and act out alongside these co-stars, I also feel happy that the work was finished as what we wanted it to be.
IU: I was happy to see My Mister being broadcasted on TV, I felt it was very rewarding and I thought once again that it was a good decision to take part in this work.
Q. Have you both ever felt the synergy during acting?
IU: I tried to rely on Lee Sun Gyun, but as the filming progressed, I could only see Sun Gyun as Dong Hoon. That’s why when I read the script I could not understand how to portray it but when I was in front of Dong Hoon, I was able to become Ji An, as if the switch was on. The reason why I acted it out with my heart without thinking too much on “I would like to portray it this way” was because Lee Sun Gyun was my partner.
Lee Sun Gyun: I am also thankful that my partner was IU, she helped a lot. Although Dong Hoon and Ji An have different environments and different ages, they both share one common thing which is not good at communicating/ conveying their feelings to others. Furthermore, both of them are disgusted by the world and themselves, feeling troubled, both were able to sympathize with each other. I think that the synergy was shown through filming process. Also IU is a very excellent actress. I also learned from her about how she made extraordinary efforts to keep Ji An’s image.
Q. Dong Hoon and Ji An were both characters with few words. In order to get into the roles, did you usually keep a distance with people around you? Please tell me if there is an episode about role making.
Lee Sun Gyun: The first day of shooting was the company scene. IU was the only person away from us, but in this scene Dong Hoon was close with his subordinates on set so when I was on standby I communicated with other actors. The reason why I was able to portray the role comfortably was all because of the director’s and co-stars’ trusts. Drama is something that everyone makes together. Thanks to the people around me creating a good environment, I was able to immerse myself in acting.
Q. Was IU not feeling lonely when acting?
IU: As we got into the second half of filming process, I got closer to Jung Hee, Hoogye family, and people from team Safety Assessment 3 (Dong Hoon’s team in My Mister). I felt happy as Ji An was filling up her loneliness. The 3 brothers’ (Dong Hoon, Sang Hoon and Ki Hoon) relationship was good, good enough to be misunderstood as if the three of them were dating.
Lee Sun Gyun:
There was no such misunderstanding (LOL).
Q. How was it acting as three close brothers?
Lee Sun Gyun: Our chemistry was perfect. Three actors’ different personalities gave synergistic effect. The three brothers’ descriptions in the script were so unique, I was worried that the mood is going to be a little awkward but when we acted it out it was strangely matched well. The scenes with Dong Hoon’s mother, Yo Soon, were often heartwarming that made me remember of my late mother.
Tumblr media
Q. The scene of Ji An and her grandmother, Bong Ae is impressive, but how was it acted out?
IU: I met Son Sook when I went to learn sign language. She is so beautiful that even the word “elegant” is not enough to describe her. However when I went to the shooting place, I met poor Bong Ae which was completely different from my first impression of Son Sook. During filming, Son Sook always gave me gentle hugs as if I’m her real grand daughter, that’s why Bong Ae’s death scene was painful and heartbreaking. Being in the same space with Son Sook drawn me into the world of Bong Ae and Ji An, I am grateful that I was able to took part in this.
Q. Dong Hoon is the second son and the main lead. Have you ever had any trouble doing it?
Lee Sun Gyun: There was nothing special about it. I can’t say much about it but I thought it was my job as the lead actor to enliven the mood during filming, I tried to create a mood that would make others feel relaxed.
Q. Did you not feel frustrated with Dong Hoon’s role?
Lee Sun Gyun: Of course I did. I knew that Ji An and Dong Hoon were the type that suppressed their own feelings but I received directions from the director to “suppress the emotion even more,” at first I felt uneasy. However as the story went on, I was convinced that the Dong Hoon’s character I portrayed at first was correct. I was so impressed by Kim Won Seok director that I called him as “the best director.”
Q. Did IU also feel frustrated with Dong Hoon?
IU: It’s a difficult question. I don’t think I did. When did Sun Gyun feel frustrated?
Lee Sun Gyun: I often thought “I will not do the same thing as what Dong Hoon did”.
IU: I was frustrated when he pretended not to know about his wife’s affair. It is Dong Hoon’s action but I can’t understand why he destroyed the evidence (public phone number) of his wife’s affair (episode 5-6).
Lee Sun Gyun: I don’t feel that way. I won’t do the same thing as what Dong Hoon did but I understand his desire to protect his family.
IU: This scene frustrated me.
Q. There were a lot of scenes where Dong Hoon and Ji An eat together, for example at Jung Hee’s restaurant, but what kind of meaning did it have in the drama?
IU: I think it was a scene that has important meaning. One meal for Ji An means survival. Eating scene between Dong Hoon and Ji An, eating scene between Dong Hoon and his brothers. Eating scene between Dong Hoon and Jung Hee. Each has different vibes. I would say that eating is life. To live reluctantly/ inevitably. To live as human being. To live a life. The word “live” has various meanings. I wonder if this drama showed fragment pieces of “eating” to describe ways of living.
Lee Sun Gyun: Not just eating but also exchanging conversations and expressing anxieties, I think those scenes express profound acts of sharing joy and sadness.
Q. For Ji An, Dong Hoon is a ray of light in hard life, but what is Ji An for Dong Hoon?
Lee Sun Gyun: The first impression I got from Ji An was “abandoned kitten.” I could feel that Ji An who shut herself in her shell and didn’t want to get close with other people had a big wound. Dong Hoon couldn’t help but sympathize with her.
Q. What is Dong Hoon for Ji An?
IU: I think he is a moonlight rather than sunlight.
Q. There are many famous lines, but is there any line that people in their forties like Dong Hoon and Sun Gyun also IU in her twenties could sympathize with?
Lee Sun Gyun: For me when I got stuck in my life, “It’s OK, It’s no big deal” became a sentence that can make me move forward whenever I told that to myself. No matter how harsh the world is, it’s rare for all of us to live without compromises. This drama reminds us about the ideal adult image that has been forgotten that’s why it is very popular among my friends in the same generation as Dong Hoon. Hoogye family is also very popular. For the scene when I got hurt, I was told that they could sympathize with how friendship could bring comfort. This is the first time my work had these kind of reactions from friends, some high school classmates called me while crying after watching the drama.
IU: There is a line that Ji An said to Hoogye family member “I want to get to your age as soon as possible. I bet life won’t be as hard.” Of course it’s wrong, but I know what Ji An felt when she said it. Yu Ra also said the similar phrase to Hoogye member and I can relate to it.
Lee Sun Gyun: I have only talked about Kim Won Seok director but the scriptwriter is also full of talent. I am overwhelmed by Park Hae Young writer’s writing ability.
Q. I think Ji An is a difficult character like never before, but please tell me the secret your brilliant acting.
IU: I don’t think it’s because of my effort, I think it’s because the power of the script and great production/ direction. I portrayed Ji An’s role as described in the script, my heart hurt when she was sad, I cried when she cried, I was angry when she was too, and I was delighted when Dong Hoon was happy. There were many times when I had disagreements with scriptwriters (talking about her other works), but it didn’t happen this time (for My Mister). Even though I have never called Park Hae Young writer by phone and never met her during filming, when I saw her that day at drama release for the first time I felt that she seems familiar to me. I could portray the role fearlessly because I trusted the script and Kim Won Seok director’s directions from the bottom of my heart, I think that a good work has been completed. I am very grateful towards Park Hae Young writer for writing excellent script.
Tumblr media
Q. It must have been difficult since Ji An had to use sign language while saying her lines and acting. The viewers mentioned that the scene where Ji An told Bong Ae to be happy is impressive, was it difficult to portrayed?
IU: It’s difficult to act out while focusing on sign language, furthermore it was a difficult scene where sign language could become awkward if I portrayed it too emotionally. I remember every time I tried to portray it, I got confused and failed. I think the reason why it was able to hit viewers’ hearts was because that scene gave me such a hard time during filming process. Sign language is a daily conversation between Bong Ae and Ji An and I am satisfied with sign language scenes because it is essential to describe on how the two of them have spent their life in the past years.
Q. Bong Ae is a hearing-impaired person, did you get any information from the director in advance?
IU: There was no particular explanation but during the meeting the director casually said about it. Because I am a singer, I was thinking about a scene where Ji An sings for her hearing-impaired grandmother, but I heard the writer put that scene on hold and finally it didn’t make it to the drama.
Q. I heard that Hoogye members’ actings were mostly ad-lib. Who was the NG King?
Lee Sun Gyun: The anecdotal interactions/ actions that Hoogye members did while drinking and playing were ad lib but the lines were not. Moreover, it was interesting because the content of the ad lib was different every time. The NG King was Song Sae Byeok.
IU: I agree.
Lee Sun Gyun: Se Byeok was nervous because it was his first drama appearance. The cleaning car driving scene is the most interesting one. He was not good at driving manual car, he caused engine stall several times. All of us were nervous, I was at the sidewalk and I thought that we would all die. Even though we were really pressed for time, he was told not to worry about it because if he make a small mistake it will lead to an accident.
Q. Did the actors actually get in the car for the car overturns scene?
Lee Sun Gyun: I was in the car but there was a device to safely overturn the car.
Q. Whom would you like to choose if you could portray other characters (including Dong Hoon and Ji An) in My Mister?
Lee Sun Gyun: I want to portray Ki Hoon because I am the youngest child. Of course I like the relationship between Dong Hoon and Ji an but I also love Ki Hoon and Yu Ra couple. Ki Hoon is the type who expresses everything positively, I felt frustrated and jealous since that positive attitude couldn’t be found in Dong Hoon.
IU: I would like to portray Joon Young if gender is not relevant. Kim Young Min’s performance was excellent, but it was also a role that I want to challenge my self as an actor. A sly and coward cute villain which is also somewhat humane that people can’t hate.
Lee Sun Gyun: Young Min is also a cute person.
IU: There’s a line saying “What did I do wrong?” when he really did not do anything to Ji An. It’s cute that he even felt sorry for Ji An. I want to act out Joon Young, a cute and attractive villain. I personally like the pure and honest Yu Ra. Many of Yu Ra’s lines stuck in my heart, especially the line saying “I wish AI (Artificial Intelligence) era will come soon.”
Tumblr media
Q. What is the meaning of “My Mister” for both of you?
IU: It became a masterpiece for me. I think that I will continue to appear in many works in the future but when I look back on my life as an actress, My Mister will no doubt be the most memorable drama.
Lee Sun Gyun: For me, My Mister is a work that was able to make me grow as an actor, and it has become the standard of what I should aim for in the future. I think it would be difficult to surpass this standard but it was a drama that reminded me the meaning of acting.
