So, my headcanon is, that at least in Howl's Moving Castle universe, Merlin and Arthur are Howl's parents, that's why he is a Pendragon. After the events in the movie, Howl finally is able to go and visit his parents and introduces Sophie and everyone to them. I think that Merlin is not really fond of Calcifer, but he gets along with Sophie. Do Arthur and Merlin have hundreds of years? Probably. Do Arthur was a king here? Yeah, why not, probaly after a while, in a time of peace he just faked his dead and ran away with Merlin.
