hot take (aka headcanon) but I kinda think that nishiki and kiryu’s relationship pre-split wasn’t on both sides platonic/familial or fully romantic; I feel like nishiki had a thing for him (not sure if he fully realized it though) and that he had developed feelings for kiryu over the course of a good long time that were deeply confusing on their own, but even more so considering they would’ve been hard to sort out with what could just be attributed to close friendship or a familial-type bond.

and on the other side of this, kiryu was utterly oblivious and never thought to question what they had as being anything other than a close friendship or familial-type relationship or whatever it was being called out loud (we know kiryu, he’s blunt as hell and takes things at face value– not the best at reading between the lines) hence why the split between them, though both were clearly hurt a ton by it, hit nishiki harder and more acutely– because on top of losing the most important person in his life, which is bad enough, it would’ve crushed any tiny shred of hope he may have had to live out his long-time, perhaps even since-childhood fantasy of being by kiryu’s side forever as his one true confidant, in a more intimate way than as a friend.

I'm confused about the "300 years" bit in the myths of Zeus and Hera. Was is that he desired her for all that time or that they had a "honeymoon phase"? How do you like to interpret it?

I'd say the first variant is more likely. I have often seen it claimed that their wedding night or "honeymoon" lasted for 300 years, but I don't think the few sources we have on the subject support such a reading. Here are the references:, first a fragment from Kallimachos’ Aitia and then a passage from the Dionysiaca of Nonnos:

"Zeus loved (Hera) passionately for three hundred years.”; alternative translation: “Zeus desired (Hera) eagerly for three hundred years.” (attributed to Kallimachos, quoted in the scholia to Iliad 1.609);

"I (Aphrodite) joined Zeus in wedlock with Hera his sister, after he had felt the pangs of long-lasting desire and desired her for three hundred years." (Nonnos, Dionysiaca 41.263).

So yes, it seems to refer to Zeus desiring Hera for all that time. The Dionysiaca passage speaks for itself and it’s as unambiguous as it gets in placing the 300 year period before the marriage, but the Kallimachian fragment is more ambiguous.. The main issue with it is that it was quoted in the Iliad scholia, and since I don't have access to it and thus I can't know the context in which the passage was mentioned with any certainty, I can only base my understanding of it on what various scholars say on the subject. So it seems that this, too, is a reference to a period before their marriage, to premarital sex and apparently it is even linked to the conception of Hephaistos, explaining why he is disabled. Here are some examples of how various scholars describe the situation based on these ancient commentaries:

"Most of the local legends and rites that are recorded in connection with the divine union refer to the first prenuptial intercourse between Zeus and Hera rather than to their wedding. It was claimed, indeed, on Samos that the pair had first slept together on that island in utter secrecy for three hundred years." (Robin Hard, The Routledge Handbook of Greek Mythology).

"Parthenos and Pais, "virgin" and "girl," in the Hera myth by no means had the simple meaning of being without a man, without the brother-husband! Rather these names meant secret love-making with him, such as Homer knew about and was the subject of a special tradition in Samos. There it was related that this condition lasted for three hundred years." (Karl Kerényi, Zeus and Hera: Archetypal Image of Father, Husband, and Wife)

A scholion to the Iliad gives a clear summary of the situation: the ancient commentator first mentions the youthful passion of Zeus and Hera . . . . . According to this scholion, Zeus fell in love with Hera at the time when the children of Kronos aspired to seize their father’s power; then, at the end of the Titanomachy, Zeus and Hera received the basileia together.” (V. Pirenne-Delforge & G. Pironti, The Hera of Zeus: Intimate Enemy, Ultimate Spouse)

"When we turn for help to the Iliad scholia for 14.295-96, we are offered two stories.  . . . The second tale (bT) relates that, after Kronos had been sent down to Tartaros, Hera was betrothed (as a presumed virgin) to Zeus by Okeanos and Tethys but promptly gave birth to Hephaistos, having anticipated her marriage by lying with Zeus in secret on the island of Samos; to cover the deed, she claimed that the birth was without benefit of intercourse (cf. SA II 1.609)." (Timothy Gantz, Early Greek Myth: A Guide to Literary and Artistic Sources).

Personally, since I’m very fond of the idea that Zeus and Hera had a sexual/romantic relationship long before they got married, I’m interpreting this 300 year period to be the amount of time they kept their relationship secret. Now as for why they would need to do such a thing, that is a topic needing its own post.
