context: Pieck and Reiner are from the School of the Wolf while Yelena came from the School of the Cat. Yelena has a price on her head since she's a hired spy and was exposed during one of her appointments, hence the reason for bounty hunters chasing after her.

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @chocochipbiscuit! thanks for the opportunity to ramble at length
tagging @acerinky @bothzangetsus @pretty-rage-machine @metamatar @leksaa90 @rose-gardens @liesmyth @themorikelife and anyone else who wants to join in! (template at the end)
answers below:
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
about 45, across my two accounts
2. what's your total ao3 word count?
~130,000 words across > 3.5 years
3. what fandoms do you write for?
used to be monofannish, but I began branching out after joining the multifandom exchanges scene (aka BFE).
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
sidewalk reinventions [nimona (2023), gen]
the runaround [SNK, pieck/yelena]
blood to gold [SNK, pieck/hange]
more than a grain of sand [SNK, mikasa/annie]
small foreign faction [SNK, pieck/yelena]
a different picture emerges when I sort these by top fics from 5 different fandoms:
sidewalk reinventions [nimona (2023), gen]
the runaround [SNK, pieck/yelena]
the crimson cusp of evening [JJK, gojo/geto]
docile, unkind, fraught [the locked tomb, harrowhark/ianthe]
the sun coming out [squid game, jiyeong/saebyeok]
5. do you respond to comments?
in short: yes, but it can take months (or - I'm looking at years now) due to real life.
sometimes I prefer to 'reply' by reading and commenting on commenters' fic in turn since it's easier for me to gush about others' writing than my own; this is also a partly a matter of self-consciousness, because it (personally!) feels narcissistic for me to talk on about my own fic in comments.
6. what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
plenty of fic I write is angsty, but I usually mix even total darkness with slants of hope or more often ambiguity. you rarely get a pure distillation of atmospheres or tones in my fic, by design or not. (I'm not super married to labels like 'angst' or fluff either because they’re convenient but can also be limiting and/or simplified boxing-in categories.) the fiercest calm or to walk along the edge probably takes the cake, however.
7. whats the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
the sun coming out.
8. do you get hate on fics?
no, luckily! i'm an unknown name but it also means I rarely attract unwanted attention.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
for sure. if you know my side account (which isn't much of a secret), you'll know exactly what kind. I'm transparent and unashamed of my id and like to revel in it. let's just say I like power dynamics, complicated and unconventional queer relationships, and older women.
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?
no :(
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that I'm aware of!
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, and it's always flattering. <3 both my pieck/hange fics got translated into chinese: 从鲜血到黄金(blood to gold) and 和缓的修复(the slow mending).
I've translated Chinese fic into english and knowing what the translation process is like from the opposite direction, I'd consider my fic a translator's nightmare, so I'm grateful if anyone makes the attempt. I’ve read the translations and been amazed by the artistry, the linguistic agility in them. the translator was really skilled at carried across the nuances of the original text and adapted to differences in linguistic norms.
this might be cringe, but to quote an example (from the slow mending):
the original:
A fully uncharted ground. There’s no script for this, for a reconciliation between an erstwhile commander and a Warrior. But a meaningfulness to it all the same, perhaps: that here, at the world’s end, the ruins of everything they know, they can still reinvent themselves, and what they mean to each other—not as a clean slate, not as a forgettance of the past, but a desire to make something new of its wreckage.
[…]
Out upon the rudderless horizon, the sun is flaring like a wildfire, a thousand years’ worth of fury braided into its light. But they might survive this, after all: Hange feels hopeful, for the first time in a while.
and the translations:
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
no, and I might be open to it if time and energy weren’t limiting factors.
14. whats your all-time favorite ship?
I'm a major multishipper and this is hard to answer. at the moment -- this is cheating because it's a gen relationship, not a ship -- zenin mai & zenin maki.
15. what's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
perhaps my pieck/yelena cosmic horror WIP, and other SNK ones (ymir/historia, pieck/hange) -- I'm not attached much to SNK any more.
16. what are your writing strengths?
i've joked that 80% of comments of my fic will invariably include one of these words: gorgeous, poetic, beautiful. the runners-up are 'incisive' and 'sharp'. this sounds braggy; I'm always flattered, and I'm just listing these because I think those are the immediate data points at hand for my strengths.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
dialogue, immediacy, and uh... this sounds glib, but tropey plots. plot in general. writing anything that cuts to the quick; my style tends to be somewhat repressed. writing long(ish) fic; my longest wordcount stands at 8.8k.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've done this (for a fic for Zen Cho's Black Water Sister), for Hokkien, Bahasa Melayu, and Manglish. in line with the author’s original choice I avoided giving any glossaries or explanations. plenty of readers in the global south infer the meaning of foreign words/brand in Anglo-American settings all the time, from context. who’s to say the reverse can’t be done? I’m also not a fan of italicising foreign words and try to do the opposite: italicising English words instead. neither do I really enjoy any arguments that foreign media should be localized for Anglo-American palates; I prefer when something is specific to a culture instead of universalised, even if it may come off weird or incomprehensible.
romanisation’s a different matter. I’m fine with romanised dialogue for Malay and Japanese but with Chinese romanised dialogue (via hanyu pinyin) can be harder to parse — I’m fluent in Chinese and used to reading in Hanzi. this changes, of course, with dialects or other writing norms.
in the Chinese media/fiction I’ve read where English dialogue is what’s foreign instead, writers have written English dialogue wholesale (as in, in English words) without translating it into Chinese or translated it into Chinese.
I’m from an ex-British colony in Southeast Asia and how dialogue is conveyed and handled is one of those things that can indicate right away an author’s biases and assumed cultural defaults. even reading fic set in my or other southeast Asian countries by diaspora writers can feel strange if foreign dialogue (among other elements) is Pointed Out and made into an event; I prefer when many things that would be the default in people’s milieu here and simply baked into people’s worldviews can be written and let to pass without comment. in Black Water Sister my one petty comment is that the (Malaysian Chinese-American) main character’s initial cluelessness in Malaysia was jarring (and stereotypical), but I get that that’s part of the premise (and it was handled smoothly after). and of course, the universal bromide applies. no media ever has to cater to my taste, she typed in jest.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
snk/attack on titan.
20. favorite fic you've ever written?
hard to answer because i love most of the ones I've written for multifandom exchanges but some of my favourites are the sun coming out, a map of the broken world, and lantern-black, the pitch of light.
(not a coincidence perhaps that 2 of these were written for @bothzangetsus!)

(1/2) There's a character I really want to RP but her backstory is super dark. Nemesis Sudou from The Evillious Chronicles. Her birth was the result of her father being r@ped by his mother. Nemesis gets horribly berated and beaten by her father because she caused an accident that killed his first daughter and she grows up to essentially be her world's version of Hitler and ends up causing a world wide war and destroying the world with a magic nuke.
(2/2) I feel like antis would tear me a new once if I rped as Nemesis. I've already gotten enough hate from playing SNK characters.

a few thoughts.
Tumblr media
hello, i’m kaia ও - welcome to my world of nonsense. i love writing; although my fanfic writing is mostly experimental, particularly with the prose - just bear with me, it’ll get better (one day, maybe). please check my masterlist for my favorite characters (i will also write for other characters upon request.)
requests are currently: temporarily closed.
note: this blog is 18+ (so, pls mdni; i can't police everyone/comb through all the blogs following me (and i'm not trying to bc who has time for that), just pls respect that.)
i. i write headcanons, scenarios, & fics; mostly for one piece, aot/snk, and jjk; although i’ll probably write for more fandoms in the near future . ii. i try to post consistently, but a lot of times i get distracted (& i’m just a slow writer these days). so if you ever send me a request and don’t see it posted, just know that i saw it/am working on it - i like to make sure everything’s imperfectly perfect before posting. iii. you can request: fluff, angst, or nsfw stuff for canonically adult characters only - just be specific on what it is you want and i’ll do my best to fulfill the request. also: if there’s a preferred gender you want me to write the reader as, please let me know. iv. i do not write: noncon, incest/stepcest, underage or age-play, or anything super gory/gruesome. i don’t mind dark/heavy themed requests (within reason, ok). other than that, i’m open to a lot. v. if you request something and i’m not into it, it’s offensive/inappropriate, or it’s not particularly inspiring, i won’t write it; plain & simple. vi. if you’re racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. you don’t have a place here, block me and leave. vii. honestly, i’m p friendly (apparently) & here to have a good time, so come, say hi, and hang out for a while :)

Armin and Annie love life headcanons, after ending of manga
(SNK/AOT manga spoilers, mentions of Hitchannie, Aruani, Jeankasa, gets very depressing by the end)
.
.
.
Annie:
After the war ends, Annie remains a fairly quiet and stoic person, but once she's alone with whoever she's with she becomes a perpetually snuggly baby. At least for a time, until she feels like she's gotten all the love that she never got growing up. As much as I ship her and Hitch, I'm not sure if they'd ever be honest enough about their feelings for each other to actually get together. One can hope.
But she will definitely not be with Armin. Annie was never interested in Armin romantically. In the boat scene, all she really did was invite him to sit with her. Her talking so insecurely about why he would have kept coming to see her all these years, that wasn't because she was nervous or aroused by him. She just didn't believe she was lovable, which is super common for anybody who's been abused that much by a parent.
Hell, she even tells him there must have been plenty of other women out there. That's not what you say when you're into someone, that's what you say when you want them to take a hint and get the fuck over you.
Anyway. Snuggly baby Annie is real, change my mind.
****
Armin:
Armin will find out one way or another that Annie doesn't like him that way. He doesn't have the know-how to know that asking out is 1000000x better than confessing in almost all cases, so either he'll confess and get turned down or he'll wait too long and see her get together with someone else.
When that happens, he won't let himself feel all the necessary grief or try to make some space from her. He'll just distract himself as much as possible with the post-war restoration efforts (to which thankfully he is a huge help) until he's bottled it up so much that if he thinks about anything besides the war he'd implode from heartbreak.
Eventually after a few years something in him snaps. He knows the consequences of his potential actions well enough that he never displays his hurt or anger at anybody, but he is so ashamed of not having gotten over Annie that he never tells anyone what's wrong. By this point he's been obsessing over war and diplomacy to the point that even his closest friendships/relationships have become extremely strained, and he decides the best thing to do is run away.
By some happy coincidence, soon after this he lands a milestone in his reparation work that he decides he is comfortable leaving the work to others. He has a jovial but restrained drink with the old crew, and the next day he's already gone. He left in the middle of the night so nobody knows where he went, although he could swear he saw Annie walking down the halls as he left. He finally releases the tension by thinking something like "Goodbye, Annie. I love you."
It is unknown to me where he ends up, but I like to think he walked by the Jeankasa house in the dead of night. There was one curious kid who heard footsteps and looked out the window, but Armin had his hood up and it was too dark to make out any details.

It so weird how people always want some type of death as consequences call me old fashion but I like seeing characters live cause that way harder to do I feel killing off characters is so unnecessary especially one who never got anything and what good is killing Steve on the 1a kids I felt the way about neji death like why he was preaching about being free to do what he wants and he ended dead like his dad like eren I understand his death but 1a kids like why
Yeah
It’s people not differentiating between genres
SNK was…grim, dark. People died left and right. It was expected. It dealt with really intense topics. And so did Fullmetal Alchemist—honestly SNK and FMA dealt with a lot of the same types of issues. But literally from chapter 1 you can tell there’s such a different tone to the story and the characters. Like you can’t read those two, compare the similarities in heavy topics and dark subjects, but still expect the same ending 💀
People comparing BNHA to SNK make me laugh. Like I cannot imagine even coming close to comparing those two stories. How, where, show me. And it baffles me that I’ve seen it so many times.
Stranger Things…it’s dark. Teenagers and kids do die. But note that it’s nobody we’ve gotten super attached to. Hope is always there in the story because we have our main cast there to rely on, to set things right. Steve dying rips all hope out of the story. All of it. What are the kids left with? What is Dustin left with? What is there left to believe in if their big brother babysitter gets taken from them?
Hopper “dying” in a sacrificial way worked for season 3–but it was fake out (a good one).
But Hopper dying AGAIN? Why? So all the characters can just have the exact same reactions that they had at the end of season 3? How creative! We haven’t seen this before! El being devastated, Joyce losing her dear dear friend again—the only one who believed in her from the beginning. Yeah totally creative. Let’s do that a second time because we’re lazy and can’t come up with a better ending that would actually leave the audience satisfied.
Fuck.
And killing off the UA kids…I’m sorry but. That’s just beyond dumb. The story that’s supposed to be about a kid becoming a hero is supposed to end with a funeral for another fellow kid? Really? For what? What do we learn from that? That war is bad? Yes, but that’s not the theme of BNHA. So why.

#SNK VS CAPCOM CARD FIGHTERS DS FULL#
#SNK VS CAPCOM CARD FIGHTERS DS SERIES#
The other versions of the game did not contain the above-mentioned glitch.
#SNK VS CAPCOM CARD FIGHTERS DS FULL#
Fixed versions of the game features a black and white graphic behind the title font on the cartridge's label, while bugged versions feature the label in full color. These cartridges have been sent by mail along with a package of five King of Fighters trading cards. On June 6, SNK announced that the replacement cartridge would be available in stores on June 25 and began the process of implementing a recall. The game crashes after talking to an opponent named Jon, who has to be defeated in order to finish the game. Players build decks of characters pulled from the annals of SNK and Capcom.
#SNK VS CAPCOM CARD FIGHTERS DS SERIES#
The bug occurs on the ninth floor of the tower, during the second play through. Capcom Card Fighters is the first new game in the series since 2000. Power Stone characters are absent from the game.Īlmost immediately after the American NDS version was released, an unavoidable bug was discovered in the game. Many newcomers have been added from recent games produced by both companies, such as Capcom's Dante and Phoenix Wright as well as SNK's Yuki and Nagase.ADK characters were added to the SNK side, from games like Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Ninja Master's -Haoh-Ninpo-Cho- and the World Heroes series. For once, it seems that the late launch of a title in Europe will be beneficial, because the European version of SNK Vs Capcom Card Fighters DS wont come. This Nintendo DS game was released on Decemin Japan and was released on Apin the United States. It was the last game to be released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color in Japan. Instead of being released as two versions ( SNK and Capcom), this game was released as a single version that lets the players decide to either start with a SNK deck or a Capcom deck. Another new feature is special character cards with alternate versions of various characters depicted with regular artwork instead of the super deformed style. In addition to the 240 character and 60 action cards from the first game, 124 new cards are added, adding cast from Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Samurai Shodown: Warriors Rage, The King of Fighters ' for SNK, and Project Justice, Mega Man Legends, Dino Crisis and Onimusha for Capcom, while also including 40 Reaction cards that can be used during the opponent's attack. This Japan-only sequel to SVC: Card Fighters' Clash was released in 2001 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color after Capcom vs. fighters) are allowed in each player's field at any given moment and there is no mana to be spent to place them in the field (there are, however, Special Points, SP for short, which are gained as fighters are placed in the field and spent as the players use Action Cards - this game's equivalent of Enchantments - or combined attacks). Each version of the game has a different starting deck and different exclusive cards that can be obtained, but the gameplay remains the same, with card battles resembling a somewhat simplified version of Magic: The Gathering, in which a maximum of three "creatures" (i.e. There are two complementary versions of the game: the SNK version and the Capcom version. Characters in the game are illustrated in the super deformed art style. The first game in the series, released in 1999 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color handheld console, was the first crossover between SNK and Capcom. Note: Be careful not to register the new formed deck recipe to deck recipe B or you will lose a card instead of gaining one.1999 video game SNK vs. You will now find the card you just added increases by the number you added. This game possesses a collectible trading card theme, with artworks on the cards featuring characters from both SNK and Capcom companies, including references from the games of both companies too. You will be prompted to overwrite the existing recipe select "Yes". The 1st 2 Card Fighters games were released on the Neo-Geo Pocket Color, and now the series make its debut on the Nintendo DS Platform. Here is a list of 5 of my favorite Raging Demon Variants
Tumblr media
The Raging Demon is Akuma’s most devastating attack. Costing three super bars, this attack does a ton of damage and gives you a special splash screen for using it at the last move. It became so popular, others have their own variations of this move. So let me highlight 5 other Raging Demons.
Tumblr media
1 - Pom from Them's Fightin' Herds
Newest to the Raging Demon club is Pom from Them’s Fightin’ Herds. I knew about this for the longest time but they just recently released the Level 3 Patch for the game. What makes hers unique is that it's not really a grab, it's a counter. One of her dogs takes a hit for her, sending it flying across her face. She gets so mad, she’ll jump across the screen to grab the opponent and hit them with a Raging Demon. From the test footage, it can go through beams, command grabs, you’re basically doomed if you hurt that little dog.
Tumblr media
2 - Shadow and Shadow Lady from the Vs Series
Shadow is Charlie with a dark color scheme while Shadow Lady is Chun-Li in mostly black with gold trimmings. These two have a unique way to deliver their Raging Demons. First, they launch you into the air. They then jump up to follow you and then they hit the Raging Demon. Despite being the second to jump, they’re already on the ground by the time the light show ends. And that’s when the body lands with a devastating explosion. That’s why the move is officially called the Final Mission.
Tumblr media
3 - Dan from Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix/Sakura Legends
So get this: in Gem Fighter when Dan goes for this move his dead father (dressed as Mr. Karate from SNK) comes out of nowhere to perform it in Dan’s steed. The ghost of his dead father comes in to do it because he knows his son will mess it up. And he did in the Udon Series “Sakura Legends” that had Dan try his best to actually perform the Raging Demon on Sakura. He was so close to doing it too… Until he tripped over her book bag. Which is funny because Sakura has her own variation of it in Rival Schools and Street Fighter EX.
Tumblr media
4 - Pingu from MUGEN
Since MUGEN is an Open Source Fighting Engine, anyone can make a fighting game character and a lot of people give the Raging Demon move to characters that probably shouldn’t have it. One such character is Pingu from the Stop Motion Series of the same name. So what makes Pingu’s stand out over other MUGEN Characters? His black screen goes off before he’s finished. So once he notices, he stops, waits for the black to return, and then does one more punch. That's the creative fun you can expect from MUGEN.
Tumblr media
5 - Akuma in Tekken 7
This is a specific moment that shows just how great the Raging Demon is. This is a match up between Super Akouma (playing as Akuma) Vs TheMixUp (playing as Jin). Akouma is down to one pixel against a barely dented MixUp. But with one lucky hit, this began a combo that turned the tides in the match. With this combo, finished off by a Raging Demon, that barely hurt Jin became one pixel of health to go and two hits later was defeated. While Lore can make it more powerful, this just shows just how much of a game changer a successful Raging Demon can be.

munday questions .
🍋 :   does your muse complain about things to you ??   if so ,   what ??
answered here !!
🍉 :   if you considered a time travel thread ,   when   would your muse go ??
i could see kak being extremely wary of time travel not only because he’s seen back to the future several times but because much of the stuff he went through in his life he later came to the realization that he sort of had to go through it to become the person he is now. as much as a history nerd as he is, i don’t see him wanting to visit antiquity because he wouldn’t want to fuck anything up for like the entire human race or risk getting stuck there somehow lol. it would kind of be sweet if like p4 kak could go back & visit pre-p3 kak & tell him that he’s gonna make it through all the dark & ugly shit & also meet his best friends & marry the hottest guy ever but he’d only do that if it was a no-stakes thing i.e. there was no chance of the present or future getting screwed up, if that makes sense.
🍓:   what’s your sweetest rp experience so far ??
i’ve been part of the tumblr rpc for so long at this point i genuinely do not know but i can tell you the sweetest thing that’s happened to me in the rpc within the last couple of years. on my old old blog (not to be confused with my old blog) i basically made a vent post where i was like feeling super insecure & was like omg everyone hates me i’m a flop & i was like fully expecting everyone to just ignore it & i would delete it the next day like nothing happened bc u know it just be like that sometimes but i came back like an hour later & so many of my mutuals left the kindest most thoughtful shit in the replies like i actually cried it was so genuinely kind & though the jojo rpc was a hellscape at that time, i really felt like welcomed & valued & i still think about it to this day tbh vhjdvhfdfhj though i still go through times where i just feel invisible or like i don’t matter, when i think of that it’s like +10 serotonin boost lmao
🍆 :    how much sin appears on your dash every day ??
not a lot, actually!! which may be surprising since i only interact with other 21+ muns but like half the time when there’s sm*t on my dash ....... i’m the one writing it JFVBHJDJKSFBJFHD
🥒 :   are you thinking about reviving old muses ??   who ??
that’s only like the entire concept of the multi i’m making fbhvfbhjbhjfjffvhjf though there are a lot of muses there i’ve been wanting to write but haven’t gotten around to yet, some of the ones that are coming back are risotto (wrote him briefly in 2020 before i had to disappear for personal reasons), giorno (haven’t decided if he’ll be on the multi yet or if i’ll revamp his separate blog but regardless he’s coming back too), my ygo muses from like 2019-early 2020, erwin from aot/snk who i wrote waaaaaaay back in 2013 & then briefly brought back in like 2016-17 i wanna say, some of my sailor moon muses from my old multi from like early-mid 2020, hwoarang who is another old school muse of mine who i tried to revive briefly as you know lmao, & i think that’s it for now??? i’ve been playing with the idea of putting my kh muses on there too but i don’t want it to get like too ridiculous dfgvhfjbfdbdjv who knows tho lmao
🌶 :   do you find your muse attractive ??
of course lmao kak is gorgeous & anyone who disagrees is just wrong & also homophobic because i said so

THE YEAR IN FIGHTING GAMES: 1994
As the original release of Street Fighter II turns 30 this year, we are taking a look at the landscape of fighting games between 1991 and 2021 on a year by year basis!
This week, Shaun Eddleston takes a look at 1994…
1994 was an eventful year for video games.
Nintendo was starting to wind down on its production of NES games, while celebrating the success of games such as Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country on the Super Nintendo. SEGA’s Sonic The Hedgehog series was going strong with Sonic The Hedgehog 3, and games such as DOOM II and Warcraft were making their way onto computers all across the world.
It was also a year where Germany placed Mortal Kombat II on its index of media works deemed harmful to young people by Germany's Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons effectively banning the game from sale in the country (and remained that way all the way up to 2005!).
Let’s take a look at 1994 in fighting games...
One of the more obscure Neo Geo titles, Aggressors Of Dark Kombat (known as Tsuukai GANGAN Koushinkyoku in Japan) was an interesting title that felt like a bit of an experiment in the genre. The game’s movement feels more like it would fit into your standard beat ‘em up game such as Final Fight and Streets Of Rage, and even drops weapons into the stage for fighters to use.
The game also includes a fun comeback mechanic, the “GAN GAN attack”, which kicks in once a player’s health bar drops below a certain point, and their power bar is full. Once one of these mega attacks connects with an opponent, the player automatically wins the round.
Art of Fighting 2 continues the story that kicked off in the previous year’s entry, as we immediately learn that the identity of Yuri’s kidnapper, the tengu masked Mr Karate, is none other than Takuma Sakazaki, Yuri and Ryo’s father. This is all part of a much bigger criminal plot that ends up being spearheaded by a certain young crime lord from another popular SNK fighting title…
As for the game itself, almost every aspect of the Art Of Fighting experience was rebuilt and polished. The character sprites and stage art looked better, and a new “Rage” gauge mechanic was introduced into the mix. All of the game’s characters are immediately playable in arcade mode, and each have their own specific dialogue when interacting with other fighters.
The first 3D weapons-based fighting game was also one of the earlier releases on the Sony PlayStation, and was poised to be the game that would “outshine” the impressiveness of Virtua Fighter’s groundbreaking graphics.
While it didn’t quite beat out SEGA’s franchise, Battle Arena Toshinden still had a couple of interesting aspects to it that are still worth mentioning today.
First of all, it is arguably the first “true” 3D fighting game, as it included the ability to side-step or dodge roll during a fight. This meant that the act of avoiding projectiles now had more options outside of blocking the hit or jumping over it, giving the game a little more depth (both mechanically and visually).
Thanks to the newly opened up 3D movement, ring outs are also possible in the game, where players can lose a round by simply falling off the side of the stage. This is an element that many gamers see as a bit of a cop out during a fight, but I personally see it as a fun way to humiliate opponents and even bring overly confident fighters back down to earth.
Capcom’s massive success with Street Fighter II was one of the most important moments in video game history, and the game was still going incredibly strong since its release 3 years prior (including this year, which we’ll touch on later in the article). There was a big question that lingered though; what non-Street Fighter fighting game would Capcom bring to the table next?
That game was Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors.
Darkstalkers wasn’t a million miles away from Street Fighter II in terms of gameplay. It utilised the same six-button L/M/H attack layout, and even used a Super Gauge that would be shared with the series.
The main strength of Darkstalkers that set it apart from its more famous older cousin, and that was its characters and theme. Instead of a tournament of worldwide fighters that many 2D fighting games utilised, Darkstalkers took inspiration from classic horror movies from the Universal era and offered a cast of 10 fighters that range from werewolves, sasquatches and vampires to Egyptian mummies, zombies and a Frankenstein’s monster for good measure.
A spooky cult favourite!
1993’s Fighters History was a controversial entry in the fighting game genre. Not necessarily because of any violent content or especially iffy storyline, but for just how similar the game was to Street Fighter II. It was so similar, in fact, that Capcom attempted to sue Data East for just how much of a shameless ripoff the game was.
Capcom wasn’t successful with the lawsuit, and Data East went forward with a sequel, Fighters History Dynamite.
The game, perhaps more commonly known in some places as “Karnov’s Revenge”, added more characters (including the game’s boss fighters, Karnov and Clown) to the playable roster and spruced up the game's stage backgrounds.
Other than the slightly expanded range of fighters, and a hilarious hidden character to discover, not a lot else has changed from the first title, and still feels like it can’t shake off the original comparison that it got into trouble for.
Many 2D games up to this point were trying to mimic Street Fighter and Fatal Fury’s cartoonish graphics, there wasn’t really anything outside of Mortal Kombat’s digitised graphics that truly felt “next-gen” going into the middle of the decade.
Enter Killer Instinct.
While Rare as a developer was having a fantastic year already, with the success of Battletoads and Donkey Kong Country leaving long lasting impressions on the industry, their fighting game was a revelation in arcades, bringing a mix of 2D gameplay on 3D stages, strong bloody violence and a ridiculous new combo system to the table.
The characters were memorable, the animated FMV sequences were jawdropping to watch, and witnessing the game announce blare out “ULTRA COMBO!” whenever someone nailed a particularly savage sequence of hits just felt right.
Why not check out our thoughts on the game’s “killer” soundtrack?
Inspired by the popularity of Ryo Sakazaki (Art Of Fighting’s main protagonist) and his appearance as a guest character in Fatal Fury Special in 1993, SNK decided to go all out and start a crossover fighting series that brought together characters from their library of past games.
The game, named after the fighting tournament in Art Of Fighting and Fatal Fury, allows players to choose from a selection of 3-member teams that have been designated to different countries of the world, and matches revolve around an elimination system. In addition to a selection of original new characters, KOF ‘94 mixed together the Ikari Warriors, Psycho Soldier, Art Of Fighting and Fatal Fury franchises to fill out one of the largest fighting game rosters around at this point.
The game’s music is the subject of our very first entry in the Soundtrack Sunday series, so check it out!
Of the slew of games that took direct inspiration from Mortal Kombat, very few actually left a lasting impression.
One of the exceptions to this was Primal Rage, which saw stop motion dinosaurs and prehistoric apes duke it out for supremacy in the new “Urth”.
The game, which also took inspiration from Taito’s Dino Rex from 1992, caused its own controversy with one of its fatalities. In 1996, a woman from Arizona said that her 11 year old son had bought the game, and used a strategy guide to execute the “Golden Shower” fatality (in which, as the title suggests, the character Chaos urinates all over the corpse of an opponent). She flipped out and started a grass-roots campaign against Primal Rage, which resulted in some US stores withdrawing copies of the game, including the already-censored SNES version, which didn’t even contain the offending move.
The game was also successful with its merchandise, and saw a line of toys and a board game to accompany it.
The first Samurai Shodown game was, and still is, one of the finest fighting games of the early 90’s, so SNK had a huge task on their hands when it came to creating a sequel.
With Samurai Shodown 2, they absolutely knocked it out of the park in pretty much every aspect. All of the sprites of the characters who reappeared from the first game had been completely remade, a bunch of new characters had been added in, everyone got amazing new moves and a number of new game mechanics were also introduced to make the game feel much more balanced and fun to play.
One of these new mechanics was the “Weapon break” system, which meant that if a player got hit with a particularly powerful attack, there was now a chance that it would knock their weapon clean out of their hands, leaving them unarmed until it was recovered. The sheer panic of scrambling to pick up your sword while the opponent is slashing away at you is a thrill that still feels as effective today as it did back then.
Street Fighter II’s reign as king of the arcade fighting games was starting to wind down by 1994, so the game saw a final upgrade in the form of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which added more game speeds, new animations and moves for all of the characters, a new “SUPER” gauge system and the introduction of  a hidden character that would quickly become one of the franchise’s most recognisable fighters; Akuma!
While many more casual players may not have felt the real impact of these changes (this was the third update in as many years since the original release), it remains as the “definitive” version of Street Fighter II, and is still used in tournaments to this day.
Developed by Namco (and ported to PlayStation in 1995), Tekken took the 3D fighting style that was pioneered by 1993’s Virtua Fighter, and added its own spin on things in regards to the control system.
Instead of using the traditional fighting game inputs that corresponded to the strength of the attacks, Tekken utilised a system that dedicates a button to each individual limb of the fighter. In doing this, the game became more of a learning process for players that wanted to do special moves and combos. This departure was so innovative, that experienced players could now figure out special moves by studying the fighters limb movements during their animations.
Known briefly as “RAVE WAR” during its beta test stage, Tekken quickly found itself as one of the most popular PlayStation games in history, and became the first game to sell over a million copies for the console.
Take a look at our thoughts about the game’s soundtrack!
Virtua Fighter was an incredibly important moment in gaming, so following up with a sequel that lived up to its predecessor was absolutely vital for SEGA.
Luckily, with Virtua Fighter 2, they managed to not only surpass the first game in the way it looked, but how it played too. Improved movesets ramped up how authentic each individual martial arts/fighting style felt, and with things running at 60FPS in the arcade version, the game felt like it was miles ahead of its competition.
The third entry in the World Heroes series was yet another improvement on the games that preceded it, but considering the sheer amount of solid competition it was facing in 1994, it still fell to the wayside.
The game added two new fighters and added a brand new boss to face off against, but things were starting to feel somewhat dated with the series now, and it suffered as a result.
While there were many action-adventure and side-scrolling beat-’em-ups based on characters from the Marvel universe, it wasn’t until the early 90’s until we got a fully fledged fighting game. It only made sense that Capcom, one of the heaviest hitters in the genre at the time stepped forward to fix this.
Released in arcades in late 1994, X-Men: Children of the Atom established what would become a beloved and fruitful relationship between Capcom and Marvel, and laid the foundations for the successful “Vs.” series that fighting game fans have played for nearly 25 years now.
The game is loosely based on 1993’s “Fatal Attractions” storyline, in which Magneto and his Acolytes return to confront the X-Men, tempting Professor Xavier to cross a moral line to stop them. It’s a pretty insane storyline with some fairly gnarly imagery (one such example sees Wolverine getting the adamantium ripped out of his skeleton!), and the good vs. evil dynamic lends itself perfectly to the setting of an arcade fighting game.
1994’s entries in the genre saw developers starting to take full advantage of the new 3D graphics that SEGA introduced with Virtua Fighter in the wake of a new console generation, while 2D fighting games kept on coming hard and fast to try and best Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat’s popularity.
Join us next week as we take a look at the games of 1995!
Did we miss anything from 1994 that’s worth mentioning?
