i’m gonna be real, the cultural perception that trans women are predators is absolutely vicious and immediately dangerous to women. but idk if policing the behavior of trans perverts online is my ideal solution. internalized transphobia has led me to more immediate repression and danger to myself than much else. i’m constantly terrified to publish (admittedly completely boring and safe and marketable) erotica because someone might make such an accusation against me. I hate the dismisal of online lgbt spaces as not as important as in real life or what goes on within the spaces as not that bad, because for me at least, I don't have anyone I know in my area that I can talk to about being lgbt, and I'm relatively scared of selectiviely outing myself to find more people, because i really wouldnt want it to get back to my parents somehow.

I unfollowed a fanfic author I'd been following for years because they made fun of people who are against death tourism. Like sorry that my cultural relationship with death and the centuries of my people's graves being desecrated and their bodies displayed in museums has made me not super thrilled with the idea of treating the graves of people who died horrific deaths like they're just a cool tourism site for your travel blog 🙄

Oh yeah I know that I still have to lock my fics but this last reblog about a reader putting a story in chatgpt themselves to generate a fake ending is waaaaaaay worse in my opinion.

Like look, I know when I put anything out on the internet that someone somewhere is gonna take it and pretend its theres or share it without my permission. It's already happened to me with my analyses in the past. When I heard about the software being scrubbed I was sad but not surprised, it really was only a matter of time but there was little I or any other writer could do to stop that (whether AO3 could have is an entirely different matter)

But to me a person reading my unfinished fic and going "wow this is great but I want more I'll put this in chatgpt to get more instantly!" is actually SOOOOOOOO fucking insulting. That person is bascially saying they don't view me as another being but as a person meant to entertain. They're saying that the hours and tears and all that time spent writing was not actually that valuable because look a machine can do it just as well and faster!

That person is so egregiously wrong and selfish. They are no better than the dudebros who scrubbed the internet in the first place. They're worse because they KNOW it's not okay and yet choose to ignore that. They're worse because they're taking something that is very obviously very personal to the author and then saying "nah i want a machine to finish it cause im too impatient or don't care what the author thinks'

Writing is so goddamn hard but writers write for a reason. We write for you and for us and for the fandom and fic writers do it for FREE and yet that isnt enough? How are people who use chatgpt to write fic any different from people who steal art and feed artificial art generators? I unfollowed you a while ago because I was mad and self-conscious that you could just drop a tabletop game on a whim based on innocuous tumblr posts when I’ve been working on mine for five years with very little fruit. But seriously, how do you do that?

A few things:

1. Breadth of experience is more important than depth. If you want to write games quickly, being passingly familiar with dozens or hundreds of other titles is more valuable than being deeply familiar with one or two. Most designer’s block stems from trying to re-invent the wheel; it's a lot easier to figure out what a game addressing a particular topic would look like when you can think of five examples of how other authors have done so just off the top of your head.

2. Focus. What is your game about? What do player characters actually do? If you were only allowed to write one scenario for your game, ever, what would that scenario be? Pare it down to its essentials: explore dungeon, fight dragon, get treasure, repeat. Don’t write a game that does everything – write a game that does that, and don’t even think about anything else until your game can actually do it. You can worry about branching out later.

3. That focus in mind, keep your eye on the minimum viable product. It's easy to think of all the things you'd like your game to have, but what does it need to have? What's the absolute bare minimum feature set that accomplishes what you've set out to accomplish? The crudest sketch of a complete, playable game is worth more than an elegant mechanism that doesn’t actually work because half of its critical components don’t exist yet.

4. Publish early, and publish often. Get your game in front of an audience as soon as you possibly can, and take any feedback you receive seriously. Game design is an inherently iterative process, and until you've engaged with an audience, you're still on iteration one; this is another common source of designer’s block. That ties into the previous point: as soon as you've got that bare sketch of the outline of your game put together, get some eyes on it that aren't yours.

5. Don't chase after white whales. Try to have many different projects in various stages of development, covering as broad a range of subjects as your interests will allow, and accept that most of them will turn out to be unworkable. Set aside current projects and return to old ones as circumstances warrant; often, struggling with project A will provide critical insight on project B, even if they’re not obviously related to one another.

6. Originality is a sucker’s game. This goes back to my first point: if you see something another designer has done that feels like it would be perfect for your game, steal it. Be wary of bandwagon-jumping – a lot of games shoot themselves in the foot by imitating the latest indie darling wholesale, without adequately considering whether it’s really a good fit for what they’re trying to do – but also don’t discard a good idea just because somebody else thought of it first.

(That last one applies to stealing from yourself, too. Sometimes you’ll come up with a new idea and realise that some existing project can be dusted off and re-purposed with very little effort. When that happens, seize the opportunity!)

I think a point can be argued from that last ask that it doesn't matter whether someone gets to know a blog or not, it's as you said anyone can lie on the internet. Not just about their age but their entire life (the whole fake persona thing). I've seen it happen a couple of times (alot more than it should be happening really). It's sort of like, say, coke pretending to be pepsi. Say someone replaces the label on a bottle of coke and changed it to a pepsi label. If you only look at it, you can be easily deceived (these are the people simply asking for a blogs age) but if you try to drink it...you would kind of taste there's something off with it (these are the people who stick around the blog a bit trying to "get to know it" or at least feel it out)

Yes, sometimes its really hard to tell when someone's lying about their life...but sometimes if you try to talk to them they stink of lies even from a mile away. Or, they don't even need to be lying or talking about their life, sometimes you just don't like the way they interact with others or their followers, so you decide to unfollow.......versus "Hey what's your age? Cause I don't feel comfortable following a blog that has no age,"

hi mr bildad um im just gonna dump this here since i have no one else to talk to

as someone who has always praised in their ability to be friends with anyone (i also need human interaction to survive btw) ive been feeling very lonely, especially since now are the school holidays.

my best friend (who is one year older than me) is barely online and doesn't take me seriously enough. and when i ask my friend group (with 2 other people my age) if they want to go out nothing happens. ive asked so many times but it's like they just don't want to hang out. and i keep seeing them post everywhere of them having fun with their OTHER friends (i don't know them bc they're from their primary schools; we are in secondary school now). and the obvious solution is to hang out with my primary school friends, right? well awesome news I DONT HAVE ANY.

and like ive just been feeling really really lonely especially today. i don't even text anyone except for my best friend, and even then she doesnt really respond properly because its like i dump a lot of messages and 4 hours later she skims through them, rinse and repeat.

(also side note i used to have another best friend but he ended up having a crush on me and didn't give me space so i kinda ended the friendship bc i wasn't comfortable with it)

during my entire TWO MONTH school holiday i haven't gone out with friends. not even once. while i see everyone else my age having so much fun and enjoying life while i just rot at home scrolling through tumblr.

so yeah im not really having a great time. hopefully when i get back to school in january things will be better

Hey, kid (human). No need to apologize for the long rant. Actually, I've got a lot to say about this topic, too, so take a toilet break, grab a beverage and a snack, then sit down with your deal old Bildaddy (platonic, metaphorical) for a chat.

First off, sorry you're going through this. It hurts a lot when friends start fading away, and you realize they no longer consider you as close and you consider them. Feeling left out and like you don't have any real friends seriously sucks.

But it's actually something every single person goes through at some time or another--though most of us aren't brave enough to admit it like you have, because it feels embarrassing and shameful. Like there's something wrong with you.

There isn't.

There is nothing wrong with you.

Friends come and go, and 99% of the time it has nothing to do with you, or anything you've said or done. It isn't your fault. That doesn't mean it hurts any less, but it isn't your fault.

But that being said, I promise you, for every person you see pictures of having so much fun and enjoying life, there are twenty--probably even more--at home like you, scrolling tumblr, or tiktok, or reddit, or whatever the kids are scrolling these days.

And even those people you see posting pictures, that isn't their everyday life. They post pics of the good times, not the bad ones (well not usually) or the boring ones. Especially not the boring ones. I bet they do more sitting at home and scrolling than you think. They're just not advertising that for all their followers to see.

But that's not the point. The point is (dolphins! goats!) your current friends aren't fulfilling your need for socialization. And that means you need to find some new friends, anon.

You can still stay friends with your best friend and that old friend group. As in, don't send them a message officially ending the friendship, and don't delete and/or block them everywhere. You can still talk to them in school when you see them.

(Do unfollow them on social media if seeing them hang without you is upsetting--or better yet, pause on using social media entirely--except for tumblr, of course--until you're in a better place, mentally and emotionally. Bildaddy deleted instagram five years ago and never went back.)

But starting today, back off on asking these friends to hang out, and sending long text messages to your best friend that she only skims through. They're not matching your energy, so you need to start matching theirs. Either they'll notice the difference and start making more of an effort (no, not that kind), or they won't and they won't. But either way, you'll stop wasting your time.

Next, you take all the energy you were spending on your old friend group and start looking for new friends.

While you're still on winter break, there might not be as many opportunities, but there are some possibilities. Do you have any cousins around your age who might wanna hang out? Or maybe there are local events aimed at teenagers you can attend? Check libraries and community centers. Or on New Year's Eve, there might be some sort of Parents Night Out event you can volunteer for and help babysit a group of little kids, along with other teenagers that you could befriend?

Then, when winter break ends, look around your school for other students who might be in your same situation--and trust me there are others in your same situation. Is there someone who always sits alone at lunch? Or what about that kid in class who's too shy to speak up? Is there someone getting bullied or ostracized? Someone new to the school who hasn't made any friends yet? Look for the ones who might need a friend as much--or even more--than you do and try to befriend them.

It won't always work, no, cause nothing always works. But it will work sometimes. And you only need it to work enough times to make a couple friends. And if you make the right friend, they might have a friend group that you can join.

I know it's really scary to put yourself out there and make the first move. But you'd be surprised how receptive people are, especially the shy ones who are too scared to say 'hi' first, and rely on the braver ones, like you, for the human connection they need. Because we all need it. (Even me. Because I'm totally 100% human.)

Other ways to make friends are clubs, in school and out of school, which is probably what adults will suggest if you ask them, so I'm not going to spend much time on this. But they're right. If you're not already in clubs--academic, sports, art, books, music, anime, whatever your interest(s) is--join some! If there's nothing of interesting at your schools, churches and other local organizations might also have youth clubs and activities, too.

Shared interests in a sure way to make friends. I see it happening all the time on Tumblr. Those mutuals you wish didn't live so far away? Well, you can find mutuals just like them IRL! (Especially if you start or join a book club that reads Good Omens, or a tv show club that watches Good Omens)

Another option is getting a part-time job at a place other teenagers work. If this is something you can do without disrupting your schoolwork, try it. Fast food restaurants, cinemas, places like that.

You say you're someone who has the ability to be friends with anyone? Well, prove it! This isn't a threat, by the way. This is encouragement. I'm encouraging you.

Now go out there and make some friends, kid! I know you can do it! I believe in you, and everybody here is rooting for you.

Your post about unfollowing people who’re really combative online made me think about someone in particular. Apologies if this is out of nowhere so feel free to ignore.

If somebody (with thousands of followers) who isn’t a part of a specific marginalised group habitually seeks out bad takes regarding them to dunk on, isn’t that a little weird? I’m not talking about defending your friends when they’re facing discrimination or dunking on the main bigot character of the day, but regularly seeking out bad takes from small accounts that’d otherwise never seen the light of day.

It’s nobody on here I’m referencing. I feel a little crazy because this person gets heralded as a huge ally and has a lot of people in this marginalised group who’re really devoted to and defensive of them but it just really rubs me the wrong way because they seem really discourse-brained more than anything else.

I am not gonna speculate on zendayas decision, in reality she didnt do anything drastic she just stopped following people. This doesnt mean shes not gonna post anymore personal things or she wont interact with fans( it may be significant less than before), she'll still promote her projects and she has already dramatically scaled back her social media usage so is it that surprising. In addition I dont think we deserve an answer for her choices, if its b/c backlash, or social media pressure or b/c shes happier without social media whatever it might be its whatever.

I feel like we gotta chill and not to make bigger than it should be. Bad Take. literally veterans do not get shit, because the ACTUAL issue is the US war machine targets at-risk people, promises they'll be set for life after only a few war crimes, then... discards them. if you'd ever worked with a VA office directly, you'd know this, but veteran 'benefits'? barely exist. most of the veterans i know (esp. older veterans) are disabled, housing-insecure, food-insecure... i understand the vitriol towards the US military. i really, *really* do. you have no idea how much i hate the US. but like these people have comically little support from the govt once they're not on reserve, and it kinda feels like your whole post is just punching down. it's ANNOYING that people are more willing to publicize veterans' issues than other marginalized people, but i feel like the target here should be the military as an entity, not the people it hurts.

Widespread systemic changes to benefit disabled people, substance users, poor and unhoused people, would all also benefit veterans but instead of just implementing those changes, the idea is "these issues only deserve to be solved when we are specifically helping veterans as their reward for supporting US imperialism." I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear that these political actions don't actually help veterans all that much but I really don't feel like I was "punching down" in that post. I was very specifically talking about people's attitudes on helping veterans vs helping a group like Black people and how it shows just how much our values shift based on racism & imperialism.

eh i mean? you might, but i don't think anyone can go through life without bothering people. even too much positivity can rub people the wrong way if it gets to them on a bad day. i get self-conscious about the way i post too.

i guess i try to get through it by understanding that if i am bothering people significantly enough, they'll probably just unfollow, and that's fine. this is your page basically, you're free to use it how you wish. anyone who isn't interested just.. won't be interested?

also i tend to talk about them casually in part because formal introductions and explanations take a Lot out of me. i overthink those way more and then they never get posted. if i talk about them in little rambles though here and there, people are still learning about them and getting familiar with what im working on. i sort of think of it like "anything's better than nothing" and people online aren't telepaths, if i was waiting to only talk about things once i had everything structured just right, id never get it done and no one would ever know their names or why i like them.

yeah tldr; its your page, your website! you make the rules. and posting about your stories in any way, even if its messy and casual, will help familiarize people with them imo.
