An Essay on Watcher Entertainment

Watcher Entertainment is a, "[...] production studio from Steven Lim, Ryan Bergara, and Shane Madej. [...] company that is focused on creating television-caliber, unscripted series in the digital space." The three personalities joined forces after their success at Buzzfeed. They have been providing viewers with content since January 2020 and found prosperity with various shows such as Puppet History, Ghost Files, Are You Scared?, etc.

Watcher Entertainment recently announced that they would move all of their content onto their own streaming platform that fans could subscribe to for $5.99 a month. This garnered immediate backlash from a majority of their audience. Within three days, the company made an update... they would no longer go through with their plan. Instead, their content would be available ad-free in advance of their normally scheduled YouTube release.

I have decided to voice my opinion about the situation in the hopes that I can express my frustration, confusion, and guilt.

I have been an avid follower of Steven Lim, Ryan Bergara, and Shane Madej since their time at Buzzfeed. I have watched almost all of their episodes many times, been to a live show, and have a plethora of merch filling up my home. When the announcement was made that Watcher Entertainment would be pulling their content from YouTube, I was shocked.

I did post a comment on the 'Goodbye YouTube' video expressing how I felt betrayed, and I don't think that is necessarily fair.

They want entire creative freedom over their content. At the end of the day, those three are artists. They can decide to make their art however they choose. We, as fans, cannot force artists to tunnel their creativity. Do we want better production? No... I, for one, watch Garrett Watts and Andrew Siwicki walk into a haunted location with one camera and a package of Twizzlers every other month for Pete's sake.

If that is what they want though, that is their prerogative. If ads are too cumbersome for what they would like to accomplish, then more power to them to try and find other avenues to find success.

However, their strategy to get to this point is baffling to me.

To advertise new content...

To countdown the days until an exciting announcement...

To promise better and better videos...

Then to announce that none of that will be available to long-time fans unless they pay? That is what was unacceptable to me. You cannot build a fanbase with free content only to rip it away from them at a moments notice.

Were there no other ways to build this concept?

Maybe I am delusional. However, I think they should have built up the content before trying to force fan's hands towards something that doesn't seem bulky enough to be worth it.

Start by putting behind the scenes footage behind the paywall.

Start by putting newer, exclusive videos behind the paywall.

They could have done all of this with their already formed Patreon, or they could have moved their Patreon to this streaming platform.

Most individuals are not going to pay for content that used to be free unless there is proof that there is more to come. There is not more to come right now. They announced it with nothing to show besides videos we have all already seen...

I feel bad for being upset? I want them to do what they want to do without being burdened by so many things, but where does that get me in the end... It is a selfish take, but you can't say the fans helped create the show and then not try to understand their perspective. Is there a middle ground somewhere?

I feel as if I have run out of steam... maybe I'll edit, or maybe I will just delete this late. It is all just a rant anyway.

In the end, I want them to have creative freedom. However, as a business there has to be a strategy where your fans win as well. Right now... the fans aren't winning. They are paying to see the same videos they have seen before. Where do we go from here?

Café Visit~ Andrew Siwicki

AN: Sorry I haven’t been updating regularly this weekend. I’ve decided to take a break, I’ve been really stressed of late. But I’m back and ready to write. I also tried being gender neutral which was difficult to remember not to use she, but I think I did alright. I wanted to include everyone, I don't think all of my works will be gender neutral, but I’ll try to use this style a bit more. 

Feedback and requests are appreciated. 

Inktober Day 4, 5, and 6: Freeze, Build, and Husky 

Slow. The day moved by like a snail struggling to cross a road before a car hit it. They were trying to hand out drinks at a steady pace, but the on slaughter of customers rushing into the establishment deemed it difficult to not rush.

As drinks were made and handed out to the crowd, they continued to take orders, the three hours of sleep they had gotten last night, beginning to catch up with them.

Last night, they had stayed up all night, helping their friends, Shane and Andrew, edit one of their new documentary series.

After the success of the first part, the two had their hands full, along with a bucket full of stress suffocating them. When Andrew had confided in them, spilling his worries and fears of the second part of the series, and how little time there was to finish the video up; they had taken it into their own hands to help the duo, not wanting them to be stressed to the point that their heads exploded.

Their sympathy for the two, though it was justified, had been the pain in their ass all day. Working on the video until five am, they only had two hours to sleep before they had to wake up and start their morning ritual.

A busy café, along with barely any sleep, had taken a hefty toil on the young adult. As they serve drinks upon drinks, the constant opening of the door to the store caused a draft to waft in, causing them to start to shiver. The freezing fall air starting to help decorate their s/c skin with tiny bumps.

As they serve the next person in line, they sigh. Preparing for the next customer, they freeze up at the familiar voice.

“Hey, I decided to come in today, seeing as Starbucks is too far away”

“Oh, so that’s all its good for, a visit from the magnificent Andrew, only because of the convenience, I see how it is” they giggle at the husky man that stood in front of them. 

“Yeah, one hundred percent, I suppose you know my order by now, Y/n” 

“Yep, one off brand Starbucks cold brew coming up” 

As they begin to build the redheads drink, they can’t help but stare at the well-built male. It was astonishing how well they had made his drink without paying much attention to it. 

After stirring the drink, they walk back to the front counter, popping a straw into the lid of the cup, before turning to the patient male. 

“That's going to be $3.50, and some more” they giggle, watching Andrew knit his eyebrows in confusion. 

“And what more would I need to give?” he questions, setting the money for his drink onto the counter, and sliding it over, giggling. 

“Well I don't know, but its only fair isn't it. I mean I was up all night with yours and Shane's sorry ass, so I think its only fair that I get a little extra something” 

“ We were up editing all night too, Y/L , don't forget that” he tries, going to grab his drink before they pull it out of his reach. 

“That may be true, but you're not the one who had a set timer to begin the day. If I remember right, when I had left for work, you and Shane were fast asleep, and its not like I could have taken a day off. Chilly weather calls for better business, can’t just leave all the work to my coworkers can I Siwicki?” they explain, stopping him before he could cut them off. 

“Fine you win” he scoffs, sticking his tongue out before giggling, and accidentally biting it. 

As the males face fills with a pained expression, they start to silently chuckle to themselves at the adorable boy. 

“Here, take your drink before anymore Siwicki damage can take place. Would hate for you to get hurt anymore because of your caffeine withdrawal” 

Gratefully taking his drink, they take the money he had slid over earlier. Waving goodbye, he begins to make his way out of the cramped space, passing several impatient customers that didn’t seem to enjoy the pleasantries of the duo. 

As he leaves the building, a small smile graces over his lips, wanting nothing more but to converse with them more. His mood being built up by their tiny conversations together. Sipping his drink, he lets the chilling air surround him, decorating his skin in the tiny bumps due to the freezing atmosphere. 

He couldn’t wait for the next time he would meet up with them.

Fic update

Okay, i finally have time and motivation to continue working on 3 of my most important fics. It’s too gay to be fucked 3, Garrett/Andrew PWP (yes pwp cuz im nasty), and a big multi-chapter YT FGO AU that no one cares about lmao.

It’s gonna get fucked 3 is 70% done, still fixing some last part of the chapter before i send it back to my friends to be beta-ed. 

Garrett/Andrew PWP is sadly still 20% WIP, mainly because lack of... motivation. Hopefully Shane’s new series contains more Garrett/Andrew interactions to boost my motivation to continue it lmao.

YT FGO AU still... 10%. I still haven’t decided if i want to make it some slice-of-life genre where its about the YT Servants interacting with each other or more serious story with heavy plot (kinda like a fusion between FGO’s Lostbelt+Singularity arcs). Although i already have a long list of Youtubers who i will use in the fics (all bbs boys will be featured ofc). More talk about this AU under Read More.

Okay, now yall know. I just want to give a little bit of update since i keep gaining more and more followers and i dont want to give an impression of this blog being abandoned. Wish me luck and thanks for still sticking around waiting for my not-so-good writings lol.

I think maybe those three will be like FGO’s Mashu, who will stick around until the end of time lmao. Other than those three, there’s Ohmwrecker, Gloomgames, Kubz Scouts, Cartoonz, and Garrett Watts who also played major part in the first arc/chapter. I will also possibly adding Andrew Siwicki and Jacksepticeye, although i still haven’t deciding what their role going to be.

Oh yeah, Daithi de Nogla and Mini Ladd will also appear. Although they are not Servants like the other, their role is going to be a normal human who manages Chaldea (kinda like Romani Archaman and Da Vinci lmao).

Those are the characters that will appear on the first arc minus Nogla and Mini. Since i haven’t really decided to put Andrew and Jack, i won’t show their stats here but their class will be Lancer (or Caster, haven’t really decided it either) and Saber, respectively 

P.S: There will be ships, it won’t be the focus of the story if i use the heavy/more serious plot but there will be :P
