I listened to that moment of Phil's arrival and... I'd have believed c!Phil more if he just said "No, I didn't hear what you was saying" when c!Tommy asked if he heard him speaking to Wilbur's shrine. But no, he said "you was silent." 'Cause, I feel so certain that he'd have at least heard that Tommy was speaking as Phil was approaching.

So idk, I like to imagine that Phil noticed and knew that Tommy didn't want to be heard, wanting his privacy in speaking to c!Wilbur's shrine. And so he respected that privacy, and lied and said he didn't hear anything. But he still recognized Tommy was going through a lot, and made sure to at least ask "You okay?" (in the softest way, please just fucking kill me thanks). Because he won't pry, but he will check on you and give you support when you need it and c!angelduo you mean so much to me.

angelduo drabble i wrote in the immediate aftermath of dream prison escape.

i am posting this to prove i can write so that i can convince you all to request drabbles in exchange for big q votes

He’s being stupid — acting like he’s a little kid again. But he can’t help it. Here, curled up against Phil, it’s the only place Tommy knows to be. 

Tommy used to be tiny, easily able to slot himself into Phil’s arms. Now he’s tall and awkward, and it’s embarrassing, the way he has to contort himself to sit in such a way that he can still shove his face in Phil’s shoulder. He needs to be small, now, he can’t stretch himself out, take up all the space he’s gotten used to taking up. His knees are pulled up into his chest, his arms hooked around Phil’s neck, his face pressed against where Phil’s neck and shoulder meet. 

It’s uncomfortable. He has to strain himself to hold the position. But it is small and safe and warm. It’s exactly where he needs to be, it’s the safest place for him to be, because Dream is out. Dream is free. Dream is coming for him. But — but he’s with Philza fucking Minecraft, so. Not even Dream can beat Philza Minecraft. Or at least, Tommy doesn’t think so. 

A part of him yearns for Techno, too. Techno has beaten Dream. He could do it again. Imagine if he had both of them, both his father-figures, both his gods-turned-caretakers-turned enemies. Prime, Tommy would be invincible if he had both of them at his back. 

But. Well. He doesn’t, and he hasn’t for a long time. 

But he has Phil. And that’s good. Phil is safe. 

Phil wasn’t safe, not too long ago. Phil was obsidian grids and Tommy’s tinnitus. But Dream escaped, and Tommy ran and ran and stumbled into Phil’s arms, and-

It’s like they’ve forgotten. 

Which. They haven’t. Tommy can’t forget it, can’t forget Techno across the chasm, can’t forget crows blocking out the sun, can’t forget Ghostbur crying for Friend. And Phil hasn’t forgotten, Tommy doesn’t think. Tommy sees the distrust in his eyes that follows every friendly word. 

But Tommy can pretend he’s forgotten, for now, because he is back in Phil’s arms. There is a lullaby making Phil’s chest vibrate, and Tommy can feel it to his core, the overwhelming familiarity of it, the love, as broken as it is. The dolonia of it all is confusing. 

Someone shouts to someone else outside, and the noise fades quickly as whoever it is continues on their way. Still, it makes Tommy flinch — he curls tighter into the cocoon of Phil’s wings. Phil coos, bird-like, in that way he always used to and never does anymore and oh, Prime, Tommy realizes suddenly, it’s been a long, long time since he’s heard that, or at least since he’s heard that for him, and- 

He trills back. 

It’s simple enough but he feels it ripping him, from his wingless spine to his heart up through his throat. “Do it again,” he whispers as a follow up, even though it hurts, because he has no wings, because of Dream, and Dream’s free but Phil- 

And Phil does. 

“Again.” And Phil does, again, and again, until Tommy is a mess, dampening Phil’s cloak with his tears. This is stupid. Foilsick acid curdles in his stomach. Phil whispers to him little bird, it’s ok fledgling, I’ve got you, but Tommy isn’t sure if it’s real. He doesn’t know if Phil believes him. He doesn’t know if he really thinks Tommy’s in danger. Phil helped free Dream, didn’t he? 

But that doesn’t mean he didn’t know. It doesn’t — he just didn’t care. All that mattered to Phil in that moment was helping Techno, and all that mattered to Techno was that stupid debt. Phil and Techno both knew. They saw Tommy at the beginning of his exile, wary and scared. And they saw him at the end of it, broken, terrified, wingless. 

Phil knew. 

He’s holding Tommy anyway.

YOU GET IT!!!! sbi as literal family didnt make sense at all in and it shouldn't because they aren't actually a family. Phil for example is some old guy Tommy feels safety with because well he's wilburs dad!!! but to Phil Tommy is just some kid running around and its SUCH an dynamic to look into because their views of each other is not reciprocal and thats what makes it interesting!!!!!! why make phil tommys dad when he can literally just be some guy tommy attached himself to

THIS IS LITERALLY EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN YOU GET ME SO BAD!!!!! like. canon angelduo is so gut-wrenchingly sad and unsatisfactory in a GOOD way when you think about it for more than two seconds BECAUSE of that lack of reciprocation of care!!!!!

of course tommy seeks phil out for advice and sees him as someone who can Protect him because yeah, that's will's dad! (there's obviously complications with the whole "tommy watched phil murder wilbur right in front of him" situation but like. baseline, i think we can agree that post-revival phil is a source of safety and security for tommy, because this is consistently and explicitly shown to the audience. tommy goes to phil's house and asks him for advice. as dream chases him, he sees techno's house in the distance, and it's when he realizes phil will be there that he starts crying for help. there's undoubtedly a paternal draw that pulls tommy closer to phil is what i'm getting at

but from phil's side? there's NONE of that! there's a lot to be said about phil's rp style but something i honestly love is this ability he has to simultaneously offer comfort to tommy while also maintaining such a drastic emotional distance from him. it's not for lack of caring! phil absolutely cares for tommy--the way, really, anyone who's had an emotionally precarious teenage son before would care for the local traumatized kid running around getting into scraps. phil knows how to calm him down, knows how to keep up with his antics the way a lot of other adults on the server don't have the patience for. phil cares for tommy. he just doesn't care about tommy the way fanon loves to think he does?? when tommy shows up at phil's house screaming and crying that dream was chasing him, there's no way phil believes him outright. the forest is empty and there's nobody else around. phil tells tommy outright that he helped dream escape and defends his own actions to tommy's face even as tommy sits in the corner, cowering with his shield up and axe drawn away from phil because up until now this was somebody he thought would be safe. and it's only AFTER tommy tells phil the whole story about dream finding him in logstedshire that phil gets overtly mad and says anything about getting back at dream, and his reasoning for it? he's angry that dream would get out of prison and immediately "torment a child". not tommy specifically! A CHILD.

anyway tldr tommy's attachment to phil is out of necessity for a beacon of safety, and by contrast phil's care for tommy is deeply impersonal because tommy's not his kid. thanks for watching
