It's been years since I read the Anita Blake series, but I still find myself haunted by the thought of Jean-Claude's WHITE. PLUSH. CARPETED. BATHROOM.
Normally I side with the vamps but honestly I'd stake him just for that.

Admittedly I am VERY far behind on this series of books. Think Obsidian was the last one I read and I know a LOT has happened and changed since that point of the series. Yet, I am an avid lover of the early books and especially the relationship between Anita and Jean-Claude. Out of all her relationships, even Asher, I felt these two just had the most sweltering chemistry and sexual tension. These books are full of sexual tension and just sex in general but they're still really good reads otherwise. What are the books about? Anita is a vampire hunter and Jean-Claude is a vampire. In society vampires are known and she can be hired to kill rogue vampires or any supernatural creature. Magic and mayhem are frequent in these books!

Rafael by Laurell K. Hamilton
"Sometimes being the monster scared the shit out of me, and then there were moments like these when I realized I'd rather be the monster a thousand times over than be at the mercy of one."
Year Read: 2022
Rating: 3/5
About: There are overall spoilers for the series ahead. As the rat king, Rafael, grows closer to Anita and her vampires, he's facing more challenges from the rodere who think he's growing weak on his own. When he receives a challenge from a shapeshifter who's younger, hungry for the win, and fueled by his paranoia that Rafael will make them all food for the vampires, he asks Anita to risk her safety to venture into the heart of the rats' power and witness his fight. But the fight is to the death, and not everyone wants Anita and Rafael to survive the night. Trigger warnings: character death (on-page), abusive relationships, gore, body horror/torture, violence, severe injury, guns/knives, sexism, ableism. NSFW content.
Thoughts: This is one of my favorites of the recent installments in the series. Looking at it compared to the others, I'm tempted to call it a novella, but it's really not much shorter than some of the first books, if not quite as tightly plotted. There's the usual amount of emotional hand-holding and conversations that literally stop characters from so much as moving from one room to another in the first half, but it's definitely heavier on plot and world-building than most of the Anita Blake books in recent memory. There's also a quick bit of character development with Asher that I enjoyed, since he's been a real asshole these past few books. (Love talking about these characters like they're people I know and not imaginary friends.)
I've always loved Rafael, so getting a closer look into his character and his friends-with-benefits relationship with Anita is interesting. (Just a head's up that the word "crazy" is used often to describe his ex-girlfriends, which I don't appreciate. It's not a synonym for emotionally abusive.) More fascinating is the look we get into the culture of the rodere (the rat shapeshifters), which has always been on the edges of Anita's experiences. I've always loved the way Hamilton writes her shapeshifters based, in part, on the behaviors of their real animal counterparts, and there's a lot to unpack here. It also sheds some light on the less functional dynamics of the other shifter groups, and I hope we see that come into play in future books.

What's with fictional characters with specifically the name Edward being absolute bastards? Not necessarily bastard in the evil way, though many definitely are, but in the feral goblin way. Edward is the type of character to get up in the morning, piss someone off on purpose for shits and gigs, grab a sandwich, and then pick a fight with God.

Hello, lovelies! Tell Me Something Tuesday is a meme created by Rainy Day Ramblings and currently hosted by Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life, That's What I'm Talking About, For What It's Worth, Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell and Offbeat YA. It provides weekly discussion prompts on various book and blogging topics with optional participation.
This week’s prompt is: What are the books/authors you pick up when you need a comfy read?
1. My top go-to read when I need the most comfort is Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. It's not that the book is largely fluff, although there is some in there, but there's something about her voice and the characters and the world that feels like home to me. I've reread it at least once a year since I first picked it up, and no doubt will continue to. Sometimes I revisit the rest of the trilogy with it, but usually I'm content with just this one.
2. I'm sure it comes as no surprise to anyone who follows my blog that anything Christopher Pike is a comfort read for me. I devoured his books in high school. His was one of the first literary voices I fell in love with, and I never really got over it. His writing still "sounds" like home to me, and I could probably pick his narrative voice out of a lineup. His books are often dark and creepy (which is my resting pulse), but they're also sad and spiritual and hopeful, and it's that combination of things that comforts me when I need it. Strong emotions of any kind usually have me reaching for his books.
3. My other comfort author is Laurell K. Hamilton, specifically the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. These are also books I've been reading and rereading since high school, and every time I return to the series, I feel like I'm catching up with beloved friends. They're funny, violent, gory, smutty, and full of fascinating paranormal world-building and wonderful characters. Obsidian Butterfly has always been my favorite in the series, Guilty Pleasures and The Laughing Corpse have the best villains, and Narcissus in Chains has a special place in my heart since it's the first one I ever read and loved.
