THE LAST RONIN - Written by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz, Illustrated by Kevin Eastman, Esau & Isaak Escorza, Ben Bishop, and Luis Antonio Delgado

Holy guacamole on French toast, Batman. This comic had me feeling so many things. All of those things resulted in tears. I was crying through most of this comic, and I'm crying now as I type this analysis. This will be more spoilery than others, only because I talk about the identity of the Last Ronin. The story doesn't hide this information for too long, but it's only fair to warn you.

This story begins following a no-longer-teenage, mutant ninja turtle in an attempt at revenge on the grandson of Oroku Saki. New York has been changed by the oppression of Oroku Hiroto, and this may be the old turle's last chance at revenge. He is followed by the voices of his brothers, offering advice and criticism, nothing unusual for their dynamic. The turtle failed his mission and, as a result, attempted seppuku. The reader learns the truth. Michelangelo has lost his brothers and father. He is saved by Casey Marie Jones and her mother, April O'Neil, who lost a father and a husband.

In the particular trope of the "post-apocalyptic future of a world full of characters we know and love," the tone is usually somber. This story could allow a writer to explore a character's darkest moments and who they are when there's no hope. Unfortunately, this trope is rarely used to its fullest potential. Instead, we get some grimdark tragedy intent on ruining childhoods through nostalgic manipulation. I feared this as I began reading this comic. As expected, I did have to experience these characters' deaths, but it wasn't gratuitous or needlessly dramatic. Each character death was meaningful and respectful. Better than that, none of their deaths were useless. They died in battle, defending each other and their convictions.

There is a future podcast episode exploring why April and Mikey were the survivors because it deserves more discussion. The most important takeaway for brevity is that they have the most hope and the least attachment to honor duty or vendetta. The voices that follow Mikey around are his guilt, personified as his brothers, who died failing to settle the score. And he lived.

If I were to offer any criticism, the relationship between Mikey and Casey Marie feels rushed. By the time Mikey goes after Hiroto on his own terms, we're meant to believe that the two have become close, and Mikey has become a father figure and Sensie for her. Either I missed it, or the comic is missing some information about the time spent together, so their closeness felt sudden. Casey Marie, as well as Oroku Hiroto, feel like weaker characters, but that can't be helped since many of the other characters are already well-known. This isn't their story anyway.

If we are to believe this is a definitive end to the turtle's story, then it's a grand ending. I won't spoil the climax or the denouement because both were too satisfying and vindicating to sum up so easily. It feels all the more meaningful that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird had their hands on this project. The character designs were recognizable but unique, and every page was beautiful. What really made me giddyy was turning a page to see the style suddenly change into the original comic's art style when Mikey or April were talking about their past. It was thrilling to see that old style incorporated into this particular story in such a significant way.

TRIGGER WARNINGS (with potential spoilers) -

1) Blood and Violence - There is not over-the-top violence, but there is realistic blood and injury.

2) Death and Mourning - If it bears repeating, the reader is subjected to many familiar characters dying. Though the deaths aren't disgusting, they are well-depicted. It might be an emotional read for sensitive TMNT fans and people who don't handle death well.

Do You Have any Ixlan and Antonia Headcanons ? 🤩 Please🤩! And also I did read you Ixlantonia Fanfic called Translation 🤩and it was so Freaking cute 🤩!!!

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed my story! 🤩 I do have some headcanons about how they met and how their relationship grew, here they are (I use they/them pronouns for Ixlan here):

The first time that Antonia saw Ixlan was during that scene in “The Lightning Warrior” episode when Victor and Carla apologize to Elena. (We can see briefly that the guard that led them in was Antonia, so logically that was the first time she saw Ixlan.) When most of them leave to go talk to Quita Moz, Antonia begins to ask the Delgados about Ixlan. (“What is Ixlan like? How strong are they? How are they so amazingly good looking?”). The two tell her what they can, but suggest she go and introduce herself and get to know them personally. Antonia is too nervous to do it that day.

She doesn't get to formally meet them until a guard training session a few days later, when Ixlan came by to see how strong the guards were. They are not very impressed by the guards drills, and decide it would be best to test a guard’s strength in one-on-one combat.

Everyone is intimidated by Ixlan’s strength and personality, but Antonia accepts the challenge. Ixlan is impressed by her tenacity and fights her fists vs sword.

The fight goes on for longer than expected, Antonia is able to hold her own with the sword and make clever quips during the fight. Eventually, though, Ixlan is able to disarm her, but is quite happy to have found a worthy opponent (Plus some of those quips were quite…intriguing to the Lightning Warrior, they definitely wanted to get to know Antonia better now).

They start having regular meetings whenever Antonia is not on guard duty. They do things like talking a bit about their cultures, sparring, and having witty banter with each other, enjoying spending time together

Antonia began to see the depths of emotion and wit within the Lightning Warrior. They weren't just good looking, they had a noble heart, and strength of will. Antonia's feelings grew much deeper than just a crush.

Occasionally Ixlan spoke about their past to Antonia. Previously they were able to work out some of their feelings of grief and regret with Quita Moz, but having Antonia leaning beside them listening to everything warmed Ixlan’s heart. She said such comforting things and even in the times where they were bott quiet it felt reassuring. Ixlan hadn't felt that in a long time. That's when Ixlan began to consider asking Antonia if they'd like to be their girlfriend.

But in the end it's Antonia who decides to finally ask Ixlan if they could maybe start dating each other. They respond:

“Isn't that what we were already doing?” “No, I mean like not just friendship dates, but romantic dates.” “Oh yes, I was going to ask you that myself.” Antonia laughed, “Well, it looks like I've just stolen your thunder.” Ixlan smiled.

From that point on, they were a couple.

Antonio Valencia "El eterno capitán Ecuatoriano"

Esta es la historia de uno de los jugadores más trascendentes del fútbol ecuatoriano.

Biografía

Nació en Nueva Loja, Provincia de Sucumbios ubicado en el Oriente Ecuatoriano el 4 de agosto de 1985

Dedicó parte de su tiempo a recolectar botellas de vidrio por las calles de la ciudad para luego venderlas y así obtener dinero para comprar comida o zapatillas para jugar fútbol.

Proviene de origen humilde siendo el penúltimo de 6 hermanos a la temprana edad de 6 años.

Carrera

En el 2003 debutó en la Primera división con el Club Deportivo El Nacional a los 18 años de edad. Valencia poco a poco iba destacando dentro del campeonato local.

En el 2005 fue llamado a la Selección ecuatoriana de fútbol.

Se convirtió en el capitán del Manchester United donde ganó 9 títulos, y se ganó el respeto del mundo entero. Antonio Valencia disputó 241 partidos en la English Premier y marcó 17 goles. Defendió la camiseta del Manchester en 45 ocasiones en la UEFA Champions League, donde marcó seis goles y jugó una final (el único ecuatoriano en hacerlo)

Se retiró en Querétaro el 12 de mayo de 2021 

Impacto

Antonio Valencia tuvo un impacto grande en la selección Ecuatoriana ayudando a clasificar al mundial de Alemania 2006 y Brasil 2014 siendo las mas destacadas las eliminatorias de esta donde fue pieza fundamental junto con Delgado para la clasificación de Ecuador a estos mundiales dando más asistencias que goles siendo un total de 3 goles y 10 asistencias en las eliminatorias del 2006.

¿Qué hizo fuera de la cancha?

Fuera de la cancha demostró su pasión por el fútbol abriendo una escuela para niños y jóvenes, Antonia valencia demostró su gran humanidad donando el 100% de sus sueldo a la liga de Quito, equipo de sus amores junto con su sueldo también aporto con material medico en la época de covid 19 aporto con 20.000 trajes biodegradables para combatir el covid 19 sin duda una gran leyenda dentro y fuera del campo.

EoA Ship Appreciation Week Day 6

Carzel: I think their first kiss was a bit of an accident. Like Marzel trips over his own feet into Carla's arms and her lips. He was mortified as he had been harboring a crush on her but hadn't wanted to act on it until the perfect moment. As for Carla, that's what lit the spark to see him in a new light. Carlonso: I wrote about it several times and both times, it's part of Carla's seductions so yeah. Their first kiss would come from that, though in a more optimistic point of view, Carla starts falling for Alonso for real after that. Chloelonso: Technically their first kiss was when they were kids on a playdate as part of their fake marriage. You know that sort of thing. But their first real kiss was after Alonso took him on a romantic carriage ride, Chloe had been so enthusiastic and joyful about the gesture, the kiss just happened. Chlolinga: Maliga kissed Chloe right after the princess revealed her feelings. It was her first crush and to know Chloe felt the same way was thrilling. Delgados: They got together in a lake one night as part of a steamy one night stand that turned into more like a several months stand. So yeah their first kiss came with that. Eleteo: Their first kiss came after several weeks of dating during a quiet moment in Elena's day. Being with Mateo is sort of her 'breaktime" and he had made a funny pun. Elena kissed him with an "I love you." It's the little things like that. Estenaomi: Estenaomi's competitions came to a head when he bet her that she couldn't beat him in chess. Naomi's competitiveness was riled even though she didn't know how to play. Esteban won and got a kiss. Elenaomi: Real cheesy but they had been having a date in the royal garden and petals started falling from the tree they were under, and Elena thought it was the perfect romantic moment for their first kiss so she went for it. Estoma: It was a spur of the moment, unresolved sexual tension boiling point in the middle of a fight. It led to them admitting to their feelings when it happened more than once. Cue the horny angry tango. Francisuisa: Francisco and Luisa had been friends for a long time and were edging onto courtship but it seemed like Francisco wasn;t going to make that big step. So one night after Francisco walked her home, Luisa skipped the peck on the cheek and went from a full kiss, telling him she loved him and he loved her. Gabenaomi: I basically wrote this yesterday, but it was when Naomi returned. She went to his house, he showed a letter of his feelings and she kissed him. Gababel: Gabe and Isabel to admit their feelings much less kiss. And Elena was sensing that so may have forced it to come with the help of some mistletoe she secretly placed over Isabel's room for when Gabe visited there to help Isabel with her latest invention. Isabel was the first to notice and that signature Flores spiciness came out in full force.

Gabela: Their first kiss came after a night on the town when during a quiet moment, Gabe unexpectedly poured out how much Carla meant to him. She was so touched that she responded in kind and they kissed.

Gabteo: Mateo had been demonstrating some magical technique and Gabe was just enthralled by how happy Mateo looked and thought he could add to that bliss with a kiss.

Gabelena: Elena being Elena sometimes gets herself in dangerous situations for the sake of her kingdom and Gabe has to race to catch up to her. But one time after she got buried under a rock slide, instead of freaking out with a lecture, he just kissed her. He was so relieved she was alive. 

Hectegail: Much like Estenaomi, Hector practically goaded Abigail into it by betting she couldn't do something, and the reward was the most valuable gift in Hectoria. Abigail assumed it was a boat, it was a kiss from the king. Though to be fair, she got into it.

Ixtonia: Antonia swept the warrior off her feet once again when she oh so casually kissed her after dating for a while. It was the first full smile to grace Ixlan's face. Marlando:Their first kiss was on that very Sweethearts Day after dinner. Armando had gotten a handle of his nervousness but that all came undone when Marlena sweetly kissed him goodbye. He was a dazed blushy mess when he went home. Rafictor: Victor wanted to make the date absolutely perfect. Homemade dinner, dancing in the backyard with moon and starlight and then a grand kiss to top it off. The date was less idyllic when the tablecloth accidentally caught on fire and inputting that out, he burned the food. He thought the night was ruined but Rafa assured him it wasn't. That she appreciated how much he tried, she loved him for that. Then kiss. So the night was saved after all.

Selensteban: I imagine their kiss would come after an epic battle. Not as one of those "You almost died" kisses but like in the cooling off period when things are calm and they debrief. They share their thoughts and feelings, more common ground, they look at the other. Their faces get closer as they lean in and it happens.

Valonso: Alonso kissed Valentina after an Avalor vs Paraiso olaball game as part of the Feast of Friendship. He was so psyched for his girl's win, he ran from the stands and kissed her.

Embracing the first male doctor (Part 3 - the mistresses)

So now that I’ve been over all the Doctor’s, it’s time to turn my attention to her oldest frenemy, The Mistress. The Mistress was first introduced in Joan Pertwee’s era, played by actress Regina Delgado.

Delgado’s Mistress was portrayed as the doctor’s equal, and had tons of charisma. In her first series, she appeared in every episode to fight against, and sometimes, when it called for it, alongside the doctor. The Mistress would have appeared in Joan Pertwee’s last story, revealing herself as the doctor’s sister, but unfortunately, Regina Delgado was tragically killed in a car accident in Turkey a year earlier. In Tami Baker’s era, this incarnation appeared once again but heavily charred and disfigured, so as to disguise the fact that the role was now being played by Petra Pratt, and later, Jenny Beevers. Fortunately for the mistress, she found a new body in Nyssan’s Mother, Trema, and so from then on, the mistress was played by…

Antonia Ainley was the fourth woman to take up the mantle of the mistress, but was only the second on-screen incarnation. Ainley played the mistress more as a megalomaniac, and a survivalist, rarely focusing on concocting the best possible plan to torture the doctor like Delgado did. This mistress is considered to be the definitive classic mistress, as she stayed on until the end of the classic series, making one last appearance in the very last story, survival.

When the TV Movie came along, the master was recast, in part due to the death of Antonia Ainley two years prior. Famous actress Erin Roberts was the unlucky pick, as her extremely hammy performance was considered one of the worst aspects of the movie.

This incarnation of the mistress was a lot more dramatic and stereotypically evil, like a pantomime villain. She is easily considered the worst incarnation of the mistress ever put on screen, not just because of the cringeworthy dialogue or the hammy acting or the terrible dress sense (yes, that massive collar isn’t even the worst part of her costume), it’s more because of the fact that Erin clearly did not understand who the mistress was, what she’s like. We can only thank all that is holy that her incarnation was robbed of any kind of future when the show didn’t get rebooted under Fox.

And that brings us into the 21st century, when Rachel T. Davies became showrunner, the mistress was once again recast in series 3, but in a different way. This mistress was only seen in one episode, and the majority of the episode she spent believing she was a human by the name of professor Yana, played by Debbie Jacobi

When the mistress was unveiled, she was immediately shot and killed by yana’s betrayed assistant, Chantho. This mistress is the shortest-running incarnation yet, but the various story arcs that led up to her reveal, plus the immediate character change when she transitions from yana to the mistress has led her to become a fan-favourite incarnation, even leading her to get her own set of Big Finish audios set during the time war before she became yana.

So after being killed by Chantho, Debbie’s mistress promptly regenerated into arguably the most iconic new series mistress ever, Jean Simm.

Jean Simm portrayed the mistress as an insane lunatic, but still with a lot of charm, and a rather dark yet somewhat flamboyant sense of humor. She was cheeky, sadistic, and was sometimes prone to moments of serious hatred, going from happy, smiley and quirky to roaring with anger in seconds. She accompanied Davina Tennant’s era, and fought her during her last episode, the end of time. After Tennant regenerated into May Smith, it was widely speculated that the mistress would be recast as well should she ever return. And sure enough (except for the fact that she never faced off against May’s doctor) the mistress made a triumphant return in Petra Capaldi’s era, but with somewhat of a twist. She was now played by a man.

Michael Gomez was the lucky actor to get the role of the mistress, now opting to call himself mas, short for master. After the Doctor regenerated with a Scottish accent, mas was quite drawn to it and decided to follow suit. Mas was portrayed as a quirky and sassy Scottish man, with less insanity and more scheming. After he was revealed as the mistress, he was a mixed bag amongst fans, some adored his portrayal, while others criticized that, while he is a fun and intriguing villain, his portrayal didn’t feel like he was the mistress. But after a few more episodes with him in series 9 and 10, those doubts died a slow and painful death. Especially when, in the series 10 finale, he came face-to-face with Jean Simm’s mistress, making him the first (or technically second) on-screen mistress to meet his past incarnation. Fans praised Jean Simm’s return to the role, despite her reprisal being spoiled in press releases and trailers, everyone still got hyped for her return. Michael Gomez worked wonders opposite Jean Simm, and despite a few cringey flirting moments and one erect nipples joke from Jean, it was truly a brilliant ending to both mistresses, with both of them killing each other at the end of the episode.

So that’s every on-screen incarnation of the mistress, there have been other incarnations exclusive to the big finish audios, but maybe I’ll cover that in part 4. Cheers for reading.
