When Din entered the apartment where they were staying in the part of the house, he noticed the open door to a room where the blinds had been lowered. In bed, Fara was fast asleep and snuggled up to Gunga. Din smiled, pulled the door shut a little, but left it open a crack so the child could get her bearings when she woke up. There was a living room, with access to a small terrace overlooking the lake. There he could see Liara lying in a suspended bench, relaxing. On the table in front of a sitting area were drinks. But before Din joined her, he sought out the bedroom and removed his armor. He opened a closet, found his clothes inside, and silently thanked Liara, who had already taken care of everything. There was also enough space for the bescard pieces. In the closet next to it, he actually found a safe in which he stowed the weapons. Finely piled up, everything lay in the compartment together with his flight suit. Din looked out to the terrace again and found that Liara was now asleep as well. He took advantage of the time and went to take a shower. When he had freshened up, Din took out the new clothes and shoes he had bought in Deia.
Din examined himself in the wall mirror, it was unfamiliar, but the blue jeans and gray shirt were comfortable and fit very well. He could count the days on one hand that he had not worn his armor. Din hadn't allowed himself that comfort, as if to punish himself. But here he definitely didn't need his armor, let alone any weapon. He was about to button his shirt when he caught sight of his necklace with the pendant. His fingers touched his parents' fingerprints and he smiled slightly. Now, besides these mementos, he had another place to remember. In the mirror Liara appeared behind him, her hair was a bit disheveled and she snuggled up to him. She eyed him, despite showering, his eyes were still a little red and slightly puffy. When had he last cried so much? She reached for his hand that held the pendant. Din let go of it, turning in her arms so she could rest her head on his chest. She felt the pendant of his necklace on her forehead, raised her head and looked at it.
"He showed me the grave site!" whispered Din. Liara looked into Din's eyes, which today reflected his emotions very intensely. Liara laid her head back against his warm chest and could hear his agitated heartbeat.
After letting Fara sleep for some more time, the three of them were now on their way to the spacious garden. When they ran down the steps, they saw a large pavilion, overgrown with ivy, vine and Liara recognized the bright colors as fragrant vetches. Thus this place gave shade and one had set up a large wooden table and many seats in this area. There a droid uncovered straight for the common meal. They did not want to disturb this with its work, besides was also still none of the others present.
Instead, a splash and childish laughter could be heard coming from behind a hedge that had been planted as a screen in front of the swimming pond. On a wooden platform there were couches, on one of which several towels were piled up. Halla nodded to the three of them with a smile before looking back at the pond, where in the shallow end a little boy was sitting in it, taking the greatest pleasure in dipping his hands in the wet.
"Tino, honey, I think it's enough now. We still have to change you because then we'll have dinner!"
The boy pouted briefly, but then seemed to reconsider, since food didn't sound bad either. He came running to Halla, who spread out a towel and rubbed the child dry. She lifted him on her arm, then went to the waiting ones.
"Tino, this is your uncle Din. The one your great-grandfather told you about so many times!"
The boy nodded slightly and looked curiously at Din. He smiled and tousled the boy's curly blond hair. Giggling, he leaned against his mother.
"I'll go put some clothes on the young man. But the others should be along shortly, too. Trixi, our droid cook has put on quite a show. We could feed a whole company of them!", Halla laughed and ran to the house. Din noticed that Fara had spotted a swing attached to a thick branch of a tree. Liara nudged her and the two watched her swing. The sound of gentle waves lapping at the shore from the lake below could be heard in the background.
When several voices could be heard, they walked back, where they were joined by Halla and her son, and Tauno. Ahead of them walked Lean leaning on his cane. The older man's face brightened when he spotted them. He touched Din on the shoulder, letting him take him to his seat. Tauno shook his head with a grin.
"He doesn't like to be helped by us!" he said to Liara, but she could see no anger but joy in Din's uncle's eyes. When everyone had taken their places at the set table, Halla's husband Jaron had also come, who had seen them on the way to the village and immediately reported to Halla, Lean raised his glass.
"Before we eat, I want to welcome our new family members. I have dreamed of this so many times and now it has finally come true. I look forward to many conversations and a wonderful time! How nice it would be if those we lost long ago could be here. Aay'han!"
Everyone toasted each other.
"Aay'han!"
Liara leaned toward Din.
"What does that mean?"
Before Din could explain, Halla, who had heard her question, interfered.
"It's a feeling that you can't describe, but you have the knowledge that our deceased loved ones are always with us!"
Liara nodded, she had understood and thought of her family. She was pulled out of her thoughts when Trixi came and brought them their food. Everyone got a plate with a big brown fluffy ball on it, with a light sauce around it. Halla sighed after Trixi left again.
"Try it and you will love it forever. It's pasta with scampi baked in bread dough!"
Liara watched as Halla opened the bread and the smell of the pasta poured out and mixed with that of the bread. She helped Fara open the bread, and she then immediately went to work on her food. Din chuckled as he watched her, thinking of Grogu again, but then started eating as well. And he had to agree with Halla. It tasted heavenly. He dipped the bread into the sauce and let it melt in his mouth. Full and happy, they later declined Trixi's question whether they all needed anything else.
After the table was cleared, Din and Liara looked into curious eyes waiting for their stories. And so Din told how he had been accepted by the tribe, his years of training and what he had experienced. That he had been to Gelgelar at a young age, but Thule's message to him, had not reached him.
"Most of the time, fate has something else in store for us!" said Tauno, and Din agreed with him. So his life went on, he left Ran's group, made a name for himself in the guild through his work as a reliable bounty hunter, and so always got enough orders. It was only because of Grogu that he now had the dark saber in his possession. Lean nodded proudly as Din told them how his conscience had kicked in and he had saved the boy afterwards.
"Everyone is allowed to make mistakes, but to admit it and try to fix it is difficult for some. You did perfectly right!"
Then Lean got to thinking.
"What was your foster father's name?"
Din swallowed. He hadn't thought of him in a long time. He had died early, perhaps part of the reason Din went to Ran. Din told them the name. Tauno looked at Lean, the name seemed to mean something to them both. Lean nodded.
"We knew each other. He was on Mandalore until he disappeared with some young men because they no longer felt they belonged. I couldn't understand it, but he was a good man in terms of fighting as well as character otherwise!"
"If he did know you, why didn't he do anything to bring Din back to you?" pondered Halla aloud. Lean sighed.
"The way his clan covered their tracks, we did it to be safe!"
Halla shook her head.
"But he could have at least told him that there was someone else, that he wasn't alone. It's not like he just kept that information from him!"
Lean raised his hand to stop Halla from speaking further.
"This doesn't belong in this place now!"
The old man looked from his grandson to Liara and smiled at the young woman.
"You'd think Elric would sit at the table with you, his watchful eyes paying attention! Like he used to do. He mostly watched what was going on and rarely said anything, but when he did, it was usually the right thing to say!"
He asked Liara to tell everyone her story. She did, and as she told of the crystal and her powers, those present looked at each other. Liara frowned, wondering about the looks. Din noticed them as well.
"Dagli will be a good teacher to you, and perhaps a little more patient with you than with me. It was quite an achievement when Thule managed to loosen my spirit to leave the message for Din. After that I was not well for a few days and got to feel the loving mockery of Dagli. She then tried to get me to train myself mentally stronger, but it was pure torture. Eventually she gave up!" explained Lean with a smile.
A loud meow made everyone look at Fara, on whose lap a small gray, but in some parts of the fur silver, loth cat had jumped and made itself comfortable purring. Fara looked irritated, holding her hands up, not knowing what to do. Maila explained to the girl that the cat liked to be petted.
"Luna is already a few years old, however, she does not grow anymore. And usually she is very nasty to strangers!"
As if the cat wanted to contradict her, she mewed several times and snuggled closer to Fara.
"She likes me!" giggled Fara and started petting Luna. The girl's honest delight made everyone at the table smile. While Luna got her petting and distracted Fara, Tauno asked about Fara's background. Din and Liara told them where and how they had found the child and freed her from Boyk's clutches.
"Without the courage and stubbornness of Liara, she probably wouldn't be sitting here now!"
She blushed slightly and shook her head.
"No, it wasn't that brave at all. A lot could have gone wrong!"
"Gett'se garay va tid'ica nari ures chaab, a o'r tkiyu chaab (courage is not acting without fear, but in spite of fear)!" said Lean, translating it for Liara. She nodded gratefully to Lean. Din looked thoughtful at this, then suddenly rose.
"I'll be right back!"
Liara watched him frown as he hurried to the house, but when he returned a few minutes later, holding a bag in his hands, she knew what he had come for. Din sat down, he had left something out in his tales, and he looked at everyone in turn.
"We wouldn't have come this far in the first place without the neti!"
Din could see Maila's shoulders slump and a glum mood set in.
"Tion'tuur mhi motir teg ibac mhi cuyir be'ida at an oyacyir olyaor, mhi sarna chaab (When we understand that we are connected to all living things, we lose fear)!"
Maila's head jerked up, just like Tauno, she stared fixedly into Din's eyes. Halla looked to Lean, who nodded slowly to her. She knew that her sister had lost her life on the Neti planet. Her parents had told her about Malu when she was old enough to understand. There was also a picture of her and they looked quite similar.
"The epitaph!" whispered Maila, and Din nodded.
"I not only read the words, I understood them. I fought the Gurlanin, he led me to the grave. Showed me the terrible deed and also tried to manipulate me. But the Neti helped me in that moment and together we could defeat the Gurlanin! Malu's murderer is avenged..."
Tears flowing again, Maila rose jerkily, her chair swaying dangerously and almost falling over. She hugged Din. Before she could sit down again, he handed her the bag. She took a seat next to her husband and opened the bag. She pulled out black fur and Maila faltered in her movement.
"Thank you!" she whispered, and Tauno nodded to Din. Lean asked how the fight had gone. When Din told of how the dark saber had flown into his hands, Lean smiled.
"That's what your mother passed on to you. Your gift of kiffar wasn't too pronounced, but this could be dormant in you without you knowing it."
Din thought of Brix, who had also told of his mother's gift.
"Also an important reason to find the Tourmaline!"
Din frowned. This told him nothing at all.
"The what?"
Liara noticed his confusion as well as the others and slapped his forehead lightly.
"It was written about it in the book..."
Irritated looks were directed at her. She explained the facts of the matter and that after Ryloth and all the other excitement, she had forgotten to tell him about it.
"I just showed you a passage to read...", Liara apologized to Din.
"We gave the stone to your father, thinking it would be safest on Aq Vetina. When we got there after the attack, there wasn't much left of the city...", Tauno explained and Din nodded, he still had questions though.
"What does it mean?"
Lean looked at his grandson.
"We've had it for generations. How it came to us has not been passed down, but there were stories that a Jedi once gave it to our ancestors. Rina, your mother said she felt the kindness the stone possessed. It is said to protect the owner and his clan from ill will and keep souls from harm. And ward off dark magic. Maybe you can find the stone if the disposition of Rina is in you! If it still exists, or maybe it was destroyed in the explosions!"
Children's laughter rang out and Din watched as Farah and Tino ran across the meadow. The boy had a toy sword and was fighting an invisible opponent. When Din saw the non-real weapon, it started working in his head. He rubbed the edge of the table with his hands and squinted his eyes. Countless images and scenes ran through his head. And then he remembered the night when the strange man had been there to visit and they had talked about the tourmaline.
"Father put it in the dagger!" groaned Din, recounting his memory. He rubbed his temples as more and more things came to him.
"There was a secret compartment, I discovered it once while hiding in the closet. His helmet and also the dagger..."
Tauno sat up straight, looked at his father and back at Din.
"Would you be able to find your way around the ruins?"
Din shrugged, but nodded slightly.
"Aq Vetina is not on any map, just like this planet!"
Tauno smiled.
"I'm sure you've flown past it often enough, it's in the neighborhood of Naboo. So close, yet hardly noticed!"
Din thought about it, in fact he remembered the small planet being close to Naboo. Until now, it had never occurred to him to land there once.
"You must find the dagger with the stone. It will be of great help to you, along with the dark saber, for your task as Mand'alor!"
Din snorted.
"I would need help especially in mastering the saber. In battle, I usually feel like it's turning on me!"
Lean smiled knowingly and Tauno nodded.
"I'll practice with you!"
Din shook his head.
"Hard to do without beskar weapons!"
At that, Lean raised his cane and struck it against the table leg. A bright sound rang out and Din looked surprised.
"Beskar!"
Lean affirmed and pointed at Jaron. He was sitting next to his wife, smirking.
"There's a small mine here that we can mine beskar from. It's not as much as on Mandalore, but it's enough. Jaron is our blacksmith, he made everyone armor again. And he can make a training weapon too!"
Liara could see it working in Din.
"That would mean if we all got together again, we'd have enough Beskar for new generations!" Lean smiled in agreement.
"I wish that all Mandalorians, once divided and scattered throughout this galaxy, could find a home again! Even if I will not live to see this!"
Din told about his tribe, which he found again on Tazar and which would wait now for Nevarro. He also said that they had taken the Beskar from Corvus to finance the construction, no matter where they would live.
"You acted like a leader!" said Tauno proudly. Din ran a hand through his hair in embarrassment.
"This responsibility is not easy. I wanted to give the saber to Bo-Katan, but she refused; she had not won it in battle. I wore it on my belt then though, trying to distract myself with work to stop thinking about what task lies ahead. But I think I'm slowly growing into it, and I hope I'll be a good, fair leader!"
Tauno patted Din encouragingly on the shoulder.
They sat until the evening hours, strings of lights attached to the gazebo began to glow and gave a nice atmosphere. Tino fell asleep early, he and Fara had played catch with Luna. The cat had kept the kids pretty busy and Fara's tiredness was also evident. The evening would have gone on longer, but Lean suddenly rose and began to cough violently. Tauno helped him, stroking his father's back soothingly while he tried to get his breath back normally with a spray. Din watched the two helplessly, and Maila leaned over the table to avoid being heard by Lean.
"The disease is attacking his lungs. The attacks are accumulating and by now it has spread. The surrounding organs are also affected. The doctor has offered him various therapies, but they only provide relief, not a cure. Maybe on Coruscant he could have been helped in time, where there are other ways to treat something like this. I'm surprised he was able to sit as long as he did today and I didn't see him take any pain meds either. Maybe your arrival was just what his soul needed!"
Din was about to retort something, but Lean turned back to them. His face looked gray and his eyes tired. "I will go to bed. But Din, tomorrow we will talk further!"
Din nodded, Liara and Fara wished Lean a good night, and they watched as he walked slowly alone with his cane to the house and disappeared inside. Halla rose with her sleeping child as well, the interruption having chilled the mood a bit. Tauno looked after his daughter and her family, then glanced at Din and Liara, who was showing signs of discomfort.
"You guys don't have to worry about it. Father had immediately come to terms with the diagnosis and didn't want to be treated like a raw egg."
He smiled at Din.
"You will hopefully spend a few more pleasant moments without reminding him of the coming death!"
Lost in thought, Din carried the sleeping Fara in his arms, back to her living area. Liara tapped him on the shoulder as they stood in front of her door and he looked at her questioningly. She pointed behind her and that's when he spotted Luna. The cat had followed them and was waiting to see what happened now.
"Like hell she's not affectionate!" smirked Din. When Liara opened the door, Luna darted past her feet and inside. She shrugged her shoulders in amusement.
"I guess where she'll sleep!"
Sure enough, as if she had known, the cat was sitting in front of Fara's bed, looking at the humans waitingly. Din shook her head, put Fara to bed. Liara dressed the girl in her night robe and then came out of the room laughing. As soon as she had Fara tucked in, Luna had taken a seat on it and was now purring herself to sleep. Liara found Din on the balcony and he pulled her to him.
"What's on your mind?" asked Liara after they had stared out at the lake in silence for a while. The lights of the villages reflected on the water.
"So much. Joy at finding my family. Fear of loss when the time comes to say goodbye! To find all this out in one day..."
Liara tenderly stroked Din up and down her back.
"Then, starting tomorrow, make the most of this precious time!"
Din nodded. They stayed on the balcony a little longer, until tiredness drove them to bed.
The next morning, Din's nose tickled so much that he woke up sneezing. As he did so, he felt a weight on his stomach and feet. A hiss followed, the heaviness on his torso dissipated and the childish giggle filled the room. Din looked into Fara's grinning face, she had made herself comfortable on his bedspread, on the floor Luna sat and gave him an aghast look before strutting out of the room and then meowing waiting outside the balcony door to be let out. Liara sighed, stood up and opened the door for Luna. As she did so, she could see a transport ship flying across the lake and disappearing behind a hill. Presumably this was one of the ships used to transport wine. Halla had told her that evening that she was in charge of logistics. Liara returned to the bedroom to shoo Fara into the bathroom so they could go have breakfast.
The table in the garden was set for them, Lean was also sitting there drinking a coffee. He smiled at the three of them. At breakfast, Din asked why they had chosen the winery. Lean told them that it was all there when they arrived here.
"The owner was a widower, already quite old, and had no successor. But he didn't want to let his customers down either. So he persuaded me and it is a beautiful job. I worked with in the vineyards for a long time and helped with the harvest!"
Din remembered Halla's comment, about the information being kept secret. He approached his grandfather about it. He took a deep breath, was silent for a moment, but then slowly nodded.
"You have to know. Whether I show you now or in a few days, it will always be terrible..."
Lean rose, asking Din to follow him. Inside the house, he led Din to a room with a monitor sitting on a desk. Lean pushed aside a picture on the wall, behind it a safe appeared. From it he took out a small memory stick. He hesitated for a moment, then plugged it into the monitor. He left it out, however, looking regretfully at Din.
"We had a drone on Aq Vetina without your parents' knowledge. It flew over the area but was without weapons, we didn't want to risk anything. That was probably a big mistake, we didn't think it would cause such an attack...!"
Din frowned, not knowing what his grandfather was pointing at. He sighed again, activated the monitor and started recording. Din glanced sideways at Lean, who lowered his head, not wanting to see what was being recorded and probably already knowing every scene of it. The drone was flying at high altitude over the beach, had captured the sea, a few fishing boats were out. And then a fireball flashed in the background. Immediately, the drone turned to the new scene. Several houses in the settlement were on fire, there were small explosions every now and then, and people were running crisscross, trying to get to safety. The many fires caused a lot of smoke and the dark smoke made it difficult to see. But then out of the smoke came large droids, programmed to kill the inhabitants of this place. Din gulped, kneading his fingers as he watched the killing. The wind drove the smoke and fire through Aq Vetina, igniting the palms and lemon trees. And then he saw three figures, a man clutching his child, the woman right next to him. Bending down from the shots, jumping over the debris and thus escaping one of the droids. The drone recording was without sound, but Din could remember all the sounds. The firm grip of his father, the stench of the explosions... They rushed toward a place, Din's future hiding place. Din watched as they opened the double doors, inviting him inside. But he didn't want to, trying to spend as much time as possible with his parents. But they pressed him, kissed him on the forehead and helped him inside. Then his hiding place closed and Din waited for the explosion that had immediately followed in his memory.
But instead, his father turned around, pulled out a gun and finished off the droid that came out of a destroyed house. His mother could be seen losing her tension, loosening her shoulders. They kept running, looking for a way out. They approached a row of houses that had not yet been damaged. Then they slowed down, and then someone seemed to approach them. They turned, headed for the one hidden by the drone, in an alley between the houses. Din could see the surprised attitude of his parents. But also how the person left the alley and pointed his gun at his parents. His father was too slow to react. The shots were coming fast. Din winced as his parents' bodies slumped to the ground and stopped moving. The person in the Mandalorian armor stood in front of the two dead men, removing her helmet as she did so, her red hair poking through the camera lens into Din's eyes. She bent down, took the blaster from Tammo, put her helmet with the owl motif back on and activated her jetpack. A moment later, she had disappeared from the shot. Din blinked, unable to believe what he had just seen. There was a roaring in his ears, and he barely noticed a droid approaching the hiding place where he crouched as a young boy.
"She!" gasped Din, stunned, sweat standing on his forehead as he sank into a chair. Lean nodded and turned off the monitor again.
"Pure hatred drove her to it. We suspect she has Elric on her conscience as well, just as there were whispers behind the hand that her sister wasn't just trampled to death by her faithful horse!"
Din shook her head, remembering the encounter on Nevarro with Bo-Katan. Her realization that Liara was Elric's daughter. She had sent her to Ahsoka, known where she was. She had informed Duncan of this... He remembered his strange dream when he was trapped in limbo. She had confessed him there to have killed the Djarins. Din had thought they were just fantasies, but she actually wanted to destroy the clan... He clenched his hands into fists angrily and it worked inside him.
"She'll want to hurt Liara!" said Din, swallowing the nausea that raged inside him. Lean confirmed this statement.
"That's why training her with Dagli is very important! She needs to be able to fight back!"
Din jumped up, pacing restlessly up and down the room.
"You need to calm down...!" said Lean, but Din couldn't calm down on command. Not after seeing those shots. He stormed out of the room, bumping into Tauno, which he didn't really notice, and ran out. Tauno looked after him in irritation, but then spotted his father and guessed what had happened.
Din's feet led him, without his having set it as a goal, to the grave of his parents. There he sank to his knees, breathing heavily, and he could not get these scenes out of his mind. This cold-bloodedness of Bo-Katan, who killed his parents without batting an eye. Snuffed out two lives, made him an orphan. A violent gust of wind made the branches tremble and a dull thud followed. Din looked at the lemon that had fallen and rolled in his direction. He picked up the fruit and smelled it. He closed his eyes and remembered. A bee had stung him and he was sitting in the garden crying. His mother came out of the house, several lemon slices on a plate. She sat down by him, took his hand, which was already a little swollen, and kissed it gently before pressing the lemon slice onto the sting. It stung, but he could feel a slight relief. Still, he sniffled and the tears wouldn't stop yet. Rina smiled encouragingly at her son, wiped away his tears and held out a slice of lemon for him to take a bite. The tart taste made him screw up his face and he shook his head. Rina laughed and took a bite as well. She too shook herself and her grimace that followed made Din laugh out loud. He had already forgotten about his aching hand. His mother hugged him and sighed.
"You know Din, every day has its light, but also its shadows. The important thing is to notice the moments of happiness, be they ever so small!"
Her hand rested on his chest.

"Each of these moments is so precious to the soul. Collect them as the sun's rays warm us. And if at any time you feel the darkness overtaking you, open your soul and let the light out!"
