How to support international stories coming out in English!

I've seen many English speakers ask when they see something not out in their language commenting "Will it ever come out in English?" "[…] Can't wait for for it to be available in English :) I bet it will be a success! 🎉" "I'm having a hard time finding these in English - are they available anywhere?" "I hope your books comes to the US! Looks cool!" "I've heard great things about your book! Is it translated to English? I was having trouble finding it, but I'd be interested in reading it ^_^"

Well, on their website Seven Seas Entertainment has a monthly survey where you can send in stories, this is seemingly the easiest way although you can only usually send in 4* a month/survey (which I won't link directly to as they are monthly and we are already at the end of April and I don't know when May's will show up, so just scroll down to it). So it can take a while, and preferably no repeats, so have a list you can check off those you have already requested. You can also ask people you know to fill it, or borrow their devices, maybe even use the computers at the library, airport, school, etc. You can also send in all the ones you are interested in to Dark Horse Comics for example, but in my experience are the ones replying to this email address on their Instagram account: contestATdarkhorseDOTcom to be much nicer although they don't really reply if they are considering the suggestions or not, nor do they appear to take regular novels which is a bummer.

There's also OniPress which are going to publish Snøkattprinsen, and Arctis who has published Ravneringene, and while claiming to bring the best from all over the world to the US have they mostly taken from their German branch's library (and seem to be mostly taking novels only, but you can try convincing them to broaden their horizons). There's Yen Press, which seems to be going pretty international or at the very least East Asian, as well as Scholastic and Penguin although the latter two might not take much comics/graphic novels compared to the comic and art book exclusive Dark Horse. Apparently these prefer suggestions done by tweeting at them, so this depends on you wanting to use twitter or not. But I'd avoid DC and Marvel as then the stories might have to become part of their established universes which might be difficult for the creators, and honestly unnecessary. There's also Tokyopop that was revived in English recently with Disney and GL&BL stuff, but with their history, do I not know if I want to trust them... Especially since they are proudly showing off the stories which rights they stole from their original underpaid creators...

Whichever you decide to go for, do I personally recommend pasting the urls from the links below or write them as "[story] by [author]" to make them easier for them to find, they are only human after all.

That thing from that country vs just another movie

So since 2012 has Innovasjon Norge where they gave money to fund an animation movie by a little unknown animation company known as Disney over a Norwegian series, that have continued doing that. So Norway's top 3 ways of making money are:

Oil

Tourism

Salmon

So because of the environment, they want to phase out the oil and find ✨𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔫𝔢𝔴 𝔬𝔦𝔩™✨. So first they tried increasing the salmon "farming", which led to fleas and birth defects. After the seemingly huge success of Frozen, they funded the side stuff and the sequel. Then they funded a Mission Impossible movie, to have a scene on Preikestolen, the scene was so brief and didn't really add anything to the movie so they had to beg so it wasn't cut. Then in one of the latest James Bond movies they funded it to pretend that a Norwegian mountain is in India. So why do they fund so many American productions? Well, to put it simply, tourism. If they sneak in a little of Norway into these, they hope people will want to go to Norway.

But not everyone watching know that Arendelle is based on Norway, and it goes over to being just another Disney movie doesn't it? The clip of Prekestolen, I haven't heard anyone mention that scene as standing out, honestly, I haven't heard anyone talking about that movie. The James Bond movie, they are told that beautiful mountain is in India, India has many beautiful mountains, but pretending that mountain is in India in-movie will increase tourism there, disappointed when they don't find it. So unless you read interviews or the credits closely, you probably wouldn't know that you were lied to. And if hopefully the pandemic taught them anything, do not rely on tourism too much!

So after a while they just become another movie among many others. But if they support a Norwegian story making it as big as they deserve, it'd be remembered among people as "that Norwegian thing" wouldn't it? This is why I want to support stories not only from my home country but also from others. Among the ✨𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔫𝔢𝔴 𝔬𝔦𝔩™✨ they've tried is timber, which Sweden is known for, and like oil, is finite. There's no end in creative people, and they deserve support. Here they get only 10% of what they poored their soul into while the publisher last time I checked get 70%. This the result of a print shop strike where as they only got 5%, where the boss took 90% of that and the actual workers got the remains. I don't blame the print shop workers, they deserved more. But that the publisher snuck in and took the hugest percentage, is just BS as they do the least (here at least, most authors have to advertise in their own free time themselves).

If you don't read much manga but want to suggest any do I recommend (these have no "fan service") 五色の舟🗨️📖♿🏳️‍🌈🐉 (Goshiki no Fune , about a found family of Japanese disabled people during WW2 as they try to survive, none of the opposing forces are demonized and just they trying to live their lives), I S―男でも女でもない性🗨️♿🏳️‍🌈❤️ (IS - Otoko Demo Onna Demo Nai Sei, about different intersex people and their lives), 斉木楠雄のΨ難 (Saiki Kusuo no PSI Nan/The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. 🗨️♿🤍🤣ψ A comedy about a seemingly aroace guy with supernatural powers he takes all too seriously), 放浪息子🗨️🏳️‍🌈❤️ (Hourou Musuko, about trans children and their lives, not perfect but also sweet, had an English translation that was sadly dropped due to lack of sales), Ballad of a Shinigami 📖🤍♿ψ (one of the first light novels Seven Seas published, but was cancelled as it was in the years light novels and visual novels weren't taken as seriously in the west, hopefully we can uncancel it), もののけ草紙🗨️🤍♿👻 (Mononoke Soushi , well, it has some nudity but not pervy nudity. It's about a young girl Tenome growing up right before WW2 and as an adult during the war, it's a love craftian inspired horror manga with Japanese folklore and she's really badass, and even if you are a coward like me is the art, story, and characters stronger than the horror so you'd probably like it,

There's one annoying character shoehorned in by an editor it feels like, but he doesn't appear much fortunately), 心霊探偵八雲📖🤍♿ψ (Shinrei Tantei Yakumo, a mystery series about a guy who can see ghosts, can get really dark), and finally 恋の神様 古味直志短編集🗨️❤️🤍🖤ψ🐉🤣 (Koi no Kamisama, a collection of Komi Naoshi one-shots before he went mainstream with Nisekoi, a collection of weird and kind of psychological one-shots that are a lot of fun within few pages). P.A. (プライベートアクトレス) ❤️💾♿🗨️🎭 about a "private actress", pretending to be people's lover, daughter, themselves, whatever is needed, seeing her act and grow as a person, not perfect and shows it age some places but mostly surprisingly accepting. アノニマス🤍🗨️🎭 (Anonymous, about some Japanese teens from the 20s, raised without names or purpose other than to follow orders, but they meet some other teens they to their surprise befriend and so they decide to live for themselves). 周刊少年Girl 🗨️🤣🤍ψ(Weekly Shounen Girl, an absurd and wacky manga that takes full use of it's medium, it's amazing). スミレ♡16歳!! 🗨️🤣(Sumire♡16 years old!! Weird manga about a puppet attending school and somehow getting friends. Oddly sweet).

These don't quite follow the rules but are 💾: F. Compo (weird trans manga from the 90s, a cis man's desperate attempt at being "accepting", interesting to look back at), クロノクルセイド(Chrono Crusade, has some unnecessary fan service but is still my favourite manga. Is about a nun and a demon hunting demons in USA in the 1920s), ストップ!! ひばりくん! (Stop!! Hibari-kun! I remember some problematic moments, but a impressively progressive trans manga from the 80s!).

The promised Korean novels:레지나레나 - 용서받지 못한 그대에게 📖❤️♿(Regina Rena: To the Unforgiven, has a webtoon on... Webtoon and a region locked translation of the novel), 필리아로제 - 가시왕관의 예언🗨️🤍♿(Philia Rosé: The Prophecy of the Crown of Thorns, the WebToon is translated but not the novel), 마땅한 살인📖🤍♿⚔️ (Justified Murder, novel about a doctor forced to kill the father of a patient in self defense when he doesn't want her to tell authorities that he abused the patient. Her cop husband helps her dispose of the body by drawing a lipstick heart on him, the signature of a serial killer only going after the worst, it works a little too well as the killer contacts her and recruits her as the killer is actually a group). International webcomics/WebToons (those i do not know where are from don't have flags, some are already in English): City Vamps 🇪🇸, Heartblood🇫🇮, I Want to Be A Cute Anime Girl, Born From Death 🇮🇩, @XXIII, Angel's Quest 🇪🇸, Watermelon 🇸🇦, Seed 🇹🇷 (I think), Love Advice From the Great Duke of Hell 🇨🇭, The Witch and the Bull 🇹🇼, Project Novos 🇦🇹, The World Where I Belong 🇹🇭(I think), and more. Remember that the ones further up are the ones struggling to come out in English.

In 1986, Mikhail Gorbachev initiated an era of political reform in the Soviet Union by liberating political prisoners and internal exiles, including the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Andrei Sakharov. During the next three years, Sakharov presided as the moral leader of the democratic opposition in Moscow and spoke his mind from the rostrum of the Congress of People’s Deputies. On the eve of a major debate, he told his wife, “Tomorrow there will be a battle.” He went to his study to take a nap and never woke up. Sakharov had died of natural causes, a free man in a fleeting era of hope.

In 2020, Vladimir Putin set out to crush popular dissent in Russia once and for all, ordering his secret police to hunt down his nemesis Alexei Navalny, the eventual winner of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. For nearly a decade, Navalny had driven Putin to distraction, denouncing his regime as a “party of crooks and thieves.” He campaigned for high public office and employed open-source reporting techniques to uncover the gaudy corruption of the regime: the yachts, the planes, the villas, the billions stashed abroad.

Agents of the F.S.B. trailed Navalny to Siberia. They broke into his hotel room and, in a plot that might have been scripted by Gogol, spiked his underwear with Novichok, a deadly nerve agent. Navalny wore the poisoned garment aboard his flight home to Moscow and, sitting in seat 13-A, he soon found himself howling in agony, as his body began to shut down. The plane made an emergency landing in the city of Omsk. Somehow, Navalny survived. He was eventually flown to Germany and, with his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, at his side, he came out of a medically induced coma and steadily regained his strength. But he declined permanent refuge in the West. Do not be afraid, do not give up, was his constant refrain, and he refused to betray his own counsel and principles. In January, 2021, Navalny boarded a flight to Moscow, knowing full well that his moral prestige represented an intolerable threat to the regime. Putin had him arrested at the airport.

At his trial, Navalny showed that he was worthy of the Russian dissidents of the past, men and women who risked everything to tell the truth, whether it was at show trials where the verdict was never in question or in samizdat manuscripts that were passed hand to hand. But Navalny, who preferred to see himself as a politician, was also distinctly modern. Rather than attack his persecutor in court with high-flown metaphors and allusions, he referred to Putin plainly, comically, as “this thieving little man in his bunker,” as “Vladimir, the Poisoner of Underpants.”

Part of Navalny’s appeal was that he evolved over time. He set aside the crude nationalism of his early rhetoric and learned to deploy both his courage and his humor. He came off not as a luftmensch, an ethereal intellectual, but as a grounded member of a hopeful generation: interested in freedom and prosperity. He even spoke of “happiness”––hardly a common term in the Soviet and post-Soviet political lexicon. His methods were entirely new. One of his earliest ventures into protest was as an activist shareholder; he used his small investments to uncover the ways some of the biggest Russian companies illegally enriched their Kremlin patrons.

Navalny knew how to talk to people on their level. He consumed many of the Russian classics and prison memoirs, but he also spoke of his affection for “Harry Potter” and “Rick and Morty.” In a letter written to his friend Sergey Parkhomenko shortly before his death, Navalny referred not only to the portrait of despair in Chekhov’s story “In the Ravine” but also to the no less gloomy late-Soviet landscape depicted in the popular film by Aleksei Balabanov, “Cargo 200.”

Last week, forty miles north of the Arctic Circle, at a prison camp known as Polar Wolf, Navalny was pronounced dead. Or, to call things by their proper name, he was murdered. The cause provided by the local prison authorities—“sudden-death syndrome”––was just an additional form of contempt and violence.

Speculative history can be hollow, and a country in need of martyrs and saints is not to be envied, and yet it is hard to overstate the loss of Navalny. Imagine the course of South African history had Nelson Mandela been killed on Robben Island. Or the fate of Czechoslovakia had Václav Havel been poisoned in his cell at Ruzyne Prison, near the Prague airport. Navalny was fearless, and a man of faith. When his friend Yevgenia Albats confided that she feared dying in exile, he told her, “There is no death.” And yet, as Albats said the other day, the loss is devastating: for now, at least, “hope is lost.”

In this moment, Putin’s self-possession can only be outsized. He is a few weeks away from winning another phony election. He senses that the war in Ukraine, which just entered its third year, is going his way and that the Republican Party and its standard-bearer have little interest in resisting that dark trend. Putin has every reason to think he is secure. Cruelty is his ultimate protection. There are hundreds more political prisoners languishing in his jails, including Vladimir Kara-Murza (who has been poisoned twice) and the Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich.

Certain reactions in the United States to Navalny’s death have been clarifying. Tucker Carlson, freshly returned from a Moscow grocery store and Putin’s knee, hustled to express Russia’s allure to Glenn Beck. Donald Trump went on Truth Social not to send his condolences but to compare his self-inflicted troubles to Navalny’s killing. President Biden, for his part, was admirably direct in his response: he squarely blamed Putin for Navalny’s death, met with his widow and his daughter in San Francisco, and announced a package of further sanctions as punishment for the murder and for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In 2007, Putin went to the Munich Security Conference in order to unburden himself of his resentments against the West and to make it clear that he would carry out a politics based on that fury. Now, seventeen years later, at the same conference, Yulia Navalnaya exemplified the courage of the husband she had just lost and took the same stage. She stood tall. She refused despair. There will come a day, she insisted, that Putin will be called to account for what he has done to her family, for what he has done to Russia. “And that day,” she said, “will come very soon.” ♦

so tldr; childhood friends reunited during chaotic times turned lovers (?) and now exes stuck with each other in the middle of space 💀

tldr for X-3996; its a very frigid planet kinda like tundra/taiga/steppe-ish like environments. It has been colonized by humans/many other species over time and is used by this huge company to fuel the richer, more inner rim planets.

niko and mona ... they met as children probably around the ages of 6/7 at what basic education they were getting on X-3396. The governing group/company (named ARCTIS rn) doesnt give a shit about their mine workers/their families so bare minimum EVERYTHING but anyways the local kids pretty much formed little groups and niko's ended up being him, his younger brother sascha, mona, miloš and his twin sister danička. they were as thick as thieves and would run around town causing chaos to the annoyance of the local adults AWUHFAWG stealing poffkas from the baker, jumping around on the roofs of homes, and running into the woods to play hide and seek and shit like that. niko would never realize or admit it but for a while he had something like a crush on mona :,)))

this was around him being 10-11 years old (mona being 9-10 i think) but one day she goes missing and he has no way of finding out why or where she went. mona was orphaned at a young age and didnt have any family so theres no way of finding her that way yknow. years go by with nothing and life continues on, getting shittier for most. niko loses his father in the mines and his brother as well... iykyk... thats for another day.

(side note... a bit after his father's death, niko gets an apprenticeship with a the town's engineer/smith and he does this along with working in the mines 🥲 this is important to some of this i promise)

short of the long is the people revolt (started pretty much by niko himself) and a full on war begins on X-3996 (niko is 16). a year or two into it after a near death experience for niko, mona stumbles upon him and helps to fix him up (cough cough alter him with nano tech). turns out she had been taken to ARCTIS' on-planet institute and was being taught all this shit with science and medicine. after this they continue to work against ARCTIS and with the revolution and their relationship develops as this goes on as well. niko's first love is back in his arms but in a lot of danger because of him so it's a little wild in that sense :(

this together-but-not relationship goes on for ~3 more years (niko is 20 mona is 19). around this time is when they are finally captured/arrested by ARCTIS and thus begins the fall. due to their above average skills in engineering and medicine respectively ARCTIS can't just get rid of them, so they opt to... "recondition" and control them so they can be used to work. this involved mona being forced to insert certain technology in niko to inhibit/dampen his will/emotions and this pretty much tanks what they had together 🥲 mona now has to stay around niko to maintain this tech and he just remains a husk of him former self, working away on ARCTIS' ships as engine and reactor maintenance

also its been like 5-6 years from the mindfuck from ARCTIS to present timeline niko WAAAAAAA (20-26 age wise)

There’s a faint sneer on Darth Thanaton’s face as he regards her, the Sith tattoo curled blood-red down his face twisting in a mockery of its original design as his golden eyes rake over her and, as they always do, find her wanting. Oh, he never says it, of course; to her face, to everyone else’s faces, on paper and on holo and out in the galaxy she’s his favored apprentice, his eventual successor. Her family is nothing but proud of her, she’ll be head of a sphere some day, she has power and status and all the influence she could ever need - it should be enough. It should be enough.

It’s not enough.

Maybe it’s a proper Sith’s ambition; maybe it’s just the desire to be treated as something more than an inhibition. Ktis doesn’t quite know, and she’s not sure she wants to, not sure she wants to confront the increasingly difficult to put off realization that’s been creeping up on her for some time now. It’s easier to push away the burn in her chest (closer to shame than anger, if she looks at it - so she doesn’t) as hatred for her master, and that’s normal, that’s Sith - it is in the nature of Sith for them to hate their master. Hatred gives them strength, after all.

If she hates Thanaton, that’s only to be expected - though given his power and position, most expect her to wait until he’s made his move to make her own, or at least to wait until she’s named a Darth. There’s far more leeway for Darths to make moves on each other, far more freedom to do so openly, instead of having to hide their scheming and find a way to at least superficially pin it all on someone else. Lords really don’t have the political support (or, frequently, the sheer power and knowledge) to move against anyone other than their peers, which means that most of Ktis’ fellow lords are currently engaged in petty power plays that will ultimately never achieve their real goals, in lieu of being able to actually act. It frustrates her, if she lets it, with something close to disgust.

At least she isn’t afraid to break that rarely-spoken taboo and move on someone the rest of her order would consider beyond her reach.

Thanaton’s eyes sharpen on her and Ktis hastily tightens her shields, although she’s sure there’s no way he could’ve known what she’s thinking; he’s a seer, not an exceptional telepath, and she’s always been able to feel him in her thoughts before. No, it’s more likely that she’s been standing here watching him too long without the proper obsequiences, and he has something to say to her, but won’t until she acknowledges him. She bites back a sigh, bows exactly the proper amount from a lord to a Dark Lord her direct superior and no further, and when she rises, she keeps her gaze on the twisting tattoo on his cheek instead of his eyes (he gets touchy about eye contact from his subordinates, unless he’s the one who initiated it). Sometimes, when his face shifts just right, she thinks she can see the edges of something hidden beneath the crimson ink, warped from age and exposure - something rough and scarred that looks uncomfortably similar to the scars burned into her own family’s slaves. She’s never dared to mention it, or even to research it or him; some things aren’t worth the price of knowing, even when you’re all but third in line for Ancient Knowledge.

“My lord Thanaton,” she says, voice smooth and low, feeling the heavy weight of her braid swing against her back as she straightens fully. His face never changes - there’s not even a hint of pleasure that she hasn’t embarrassed him by messing up the propriety, just the same disinterested blankness and carefully-concealed derision. His aura in the Force is all twisted with thorns, digging into him, constricting him so tightly it’s no wonder he’s regarded as one of the most uptight and traditional Sith in the Empire, and Ktis thinks, not for the first time, that he hates her. “You summoned me?”

“I did,” Thanaton says, inclining his head to her in the closest thing to a measure of respect he’ll ever grant her. He’s only doing it because it’s proper, because it’s traditional (and she’s not sure there’s ever been a word she’s hated more), and when she was younger, when she was new to his service, she’d clung to those crumbs he’d thrown her like she could fashion a relationship out of them, as though that would fix the way he’d watched her with ice in his eyes when he thought she wasn’t looking, the way he pushed her into fights and politics she was nowhere near ready for with nothing other than a command to succeed or die - and death was not and has never been an option so she succeeded, time and time again, only for it to bring down further derision on her. Nothing she has ever done or could ever do will make him happy, not even if she brought him Coruscant perfectly contained, or every secret the Emperor has ever hidden away, or the heads of the entire Dark Council and the throne of the Empire ready for the taking. “I wished to speak with you about Darth Arctis.”

Arctis has held the sphere for quite a long time, though he’s rarely seen in public anymore, preferring to spend most of his time sequestered away with whatever it is he’s been studying (something Rakata, she suspects - the remnants of their Infinite Empire always seem to be where the strongest Sith inevitably end up). It isn’t surprising that Thanaton’s called her here to speak about him; she knows her master has been making plans for at least two years now, more than likely for as long as he’s been running the sphere’s day-to-day and holoing in for Dark Council meetings on Arctis’ behest. But if he’s finally preparing to make those plans a reality…

When she’d been a child, Ktis had wanted nothing more than to sit on the Dark Council one day. The greatest position any Sith can aspire to - controlling a good portion of the Empire - what pureblood child doesn’t see the Darths who sit those seats and want to be them? Setting foot on Korriban at sixteen, after two years preliminary education at the academy on Dromund Kaas, had been the closest thing to a spiritual experience she’s ever felt. The red sands, the wind, the sun-scorched sky and towering crags and cliffs, the statues that touch the clouds - it’d felt like coming home for the first time, like finally knowing what it truly means to be Sith in more than just religion. A great honor, her acolyte group had said, when she’d found out she was due to transfer there, to train in the ancient tombs that are the closest thing the Sith have to holy places.

It should’ve been a right.

“Of course, my lord,” she murmurs, pushes the complicated tangle of feelings thinking of Korriban always evokes back to the back of her mind. If she’s lucky, Thanaton will allow her to visit his stronghold on the planet itself again soon - and he’s implied she should be considering taking an apprentice, which would also necessitate a trip to the Sith homeworld - and yet even that thought burns something in her chest. It shouldn’t be his decision whether or not she can see the birthplace of her people. “Has he finally emerged from seclusion?”

“Not yet, no.” Thanaton’s sharply-edged tone smooths out as he shifts into speaking about his plans, his ambitions - as always, he reserves his derision for those he views below him, and for her. Arctis may be his master and his enemy, but the current head of the sphere is neither a fool nor inferior, and of course he isn’t Thanaton’s supposedly-favored but always-despised apprentice; he’s earned her master’s respect (in the way she’s never been able to). Thanaton will face him and fight him as an equal, even if he’s hardly straightforward about how he does it. “I believe it’s time he does, however, don’t you?”

When Harry first saw the shadowy, furry, glowing eyed thing in the corner, he assumed it was Mab about to try to kill him again. There was never a dull moment in Arctis Tor, whether he was lifting more weights than he’d ever seen on a piece of work out equipment, or the Queen Monster Bitch herself was trying to bludgeon him to death. Of course she’d already tried that morning, with throwing knives, but maybe she was working her way up to expanding her schedule. 

He eyed it, cold energy forming at his fist and sending patterns of frost in spirals over his arm. It reminded him of a Malk, or a fetch, like one of those that had taken Molly years before. Dark fur, glowing red eyes, limbs all wrong, and enough claws and spikes to really ruin his day.

Maybe Mab plans on contracting out more murder attempts, he thought drily. “If you’re going to come at me, come at me, because otherwise I’m going to enjoy my sub.”

And if you do come at me, I’m going to turn you into an ice sculpture.

 1. Exploratory

Looking back at activity 3.3.3  we learned about microplastics and how they affect our planet, now we can look at the bigger picture as a whole; plastic pollution. Plastic is found everywhere, whether it be plastic bags,straws,toys,medical equipment etc. A large presence of the plastic produced is single use plastic,which is why the plastic pollution is such a large and vast problem. Plastic (especially single use) can end up in trash landfills due to missorting,in the ocean where it will pollute the water and harm marine life, or it will just end up on sidewalks/parks/sewers/etc from people littering. The lifetime of plastic varies by product but some single plastics can take up to 400 years to break down,once broken into microplastics it is impossible to reverse the damage done.

  2. Diagnostic

Probe motives or causes. (Why? (Tell your reader why this occurs. Explain the causes in detail.)) Plastic has been mass produced since around the 1950/60's. Production increased exponentially, from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 448 million tons by 2015. That means that not only has plastic has been piling up for 60+ years but that the amount produced is more than a hundred times. PLastic pollution is higher in areas that do not have centralized garbage/recycling system. This much plastic is polluting the land and the sea, If not eaten by wildlife, the chemicals on the plastic could make both wildlife and humans sick.

  3. Cause and Effect

If plastic pollution continues at the current (or worse) rate, then our quality of life will go down. Plastic pollution threatens the livelihood of many marine species, if the pollution continues it is likely that fish (and other marine species) populations will shrink due to death by either getting caught in plastic or ingesting it. The shrinking and/or death of these populations would both limit sea food supply and cause the ocean to have an unstable balance. If the rate of plastic pollution continues it could also lead to humans living in a plastic wasteland, the microplastics could become very abundant in our water supplies and everything would be cluttered due to litter. On the opposite note, if countries start to ban single plastic usage and find a safe way to dispose of or eliminate existing plastics then the future could look a bit brighter. Not only would the sea and land become cleaner and more healthy but our world would become more eco friendly, hopefully helping climate change in a healthy way.

  4. Priority

Plastic pollution affects every single person living on this planet. We all have to deal with the sensitive environment that is being polluted and harmed by plastic, This relates to my life and why I am in this class personally though. I have always wanted to be a marine biologist, it started as a fun way to work with sharks but as I grew older I realized how much anger our ocean (and its creatures) is in. A major contributor to plastic pollution is fishing, many plastic fishing nets and lines get stuck in the ocean which either kills or drastically harms marine life. I believe if we reduced mass fishing or found a plastic free method of fishing then HOPEFULLY we could impact our marine environments less.

  6. Critical

I have always been aware of how dangerous plastic is for wildlife but I had never realized how much it actually affects humans. I never realized that some countries live covered in trash/plastic because they have no way of discarding it. I also never realized how much plastic we actually use in a single day. This lesson has opened my eyes to how I have contributed to plastic pollution and how I can hopefully reduce my footprint. The arcties mention single use plastic bans,which I hope to see happen soon and they explained that our ocean is not doomed, there are ways to collect the plastic and remove it, which is something that sparks hope.

This is Slavnh Sovost, one of the easier of the Horror Trolls to figure out - she’s based off the shark from Jaws. The Prince of Blood for her session, she was a thriving, properly violent violetblood until the aforementioned psionic incident caused by Büjorn and instigated by Phileq caused her to become severely brain damaged, limiting her ability to live independently.

Phileq being Phileq, he took this opportunity to become a caretaker for her so she would avoid becoming culled, while also using her inability to fight back with those prodigious muscles as a means of pushing their relationship nonconsensually into a more flushed shade of Red. She prototypes her Sharkmom upon entry, although it’s only after Phileq tazes it to death and does the prototyping for her, which causes the prototyped underlings to refuse to harm her.

Eventually, she is made a God Tier by ritual execution by everyone’s favorite wild card, Didide Kokoet, and in the process, heals her brain damage. Now lucid and fully aware of everything Phileq did to her, she proceeds to bite his limbs off and leave him for dead inches from his god tier slab.

Unfortunately for her, Phileq’s knowledge of the game’s rules, as a Page of Doom, caused him to subconsciously preconceive of this possibility, and he switched himself, clothing and all, with his dream self. Phileq manages to self-prototype his sprite with his dreamself’s corpse and then commit suicide over his god tier bed, merging with his sprite to attain further knowledge of the game’s mechanisms, whereupon his determination to complete the session becomes indomitable. He manages to recruit Didide and Arctis (a vengeful Arctis, recently revived by Didide after a failed decapitation from Büjorn) to his side, but they are summarily put down in a lethal four-way fight between Didide, Arctis, Gritte, and Slavnh.

Slavnh and Gritte remain, while Didide suffers a Heroic death and Arctis’s body is kicked into the depths of the furthest ring, its fate unknown. Slavnh and Gritte fight each other, Gritte, in revenge for Slavnh killing her kismesis, and Slavnh, because she’s fucking pissed and wants to kill them all because it’s what she was born to do.

Just. Just.

Thus leaves two.

Secrets in the Titles

I decided that I wanted to see how the title of each book fits the story. This is a huge spoiler in the novels so do not read if you are not ready. I warned you!

Storm Front

This title fits very well with the story though you do not see it till the end. The death magic that killed Tommy Tom and everyone involved is connected to the storms.  I love how obvious it is when you go back and see the truth see the raw power of the storm.

Fool Moon

Fool Moon is another great misleading story title, you hear about the werewolves in the first chapter and think about how the story and the title of the book are connected because of the werewolves. Unfortunately Butcher fools (ha ha get it fools) us with how the loup-garou is set up by the FBI werewolves.

Grave Peril

With the dangers of the ghosts coming up and terrorizing the people of Chicago and opening up the way for the nightmare. There is two additional things that I think about that are also a bonus to this story title. First Charity’s life is put into great peril in the graveyard, she was hospitalized and little Harry is in ICU. The second one is Harry brings the dead that Bianca and her kind have killed in her house, the graves gave up the dead.

Summer Knight

Harry has to find who stole the power of the Summer Knight, play on words this story is also leading up to the Summer Solstice.  Harry is sent to find who stole the Summer Knights power in his search he ultimately has to find the Knight and save the power. This one is a large play on words, knight is also night, and the story ends finding the summer knight on mid-summer night. This makes it double fun for me.

Death Masks

This one I tried to connect the title with the story, besides the obvious Shroud of Turin being the Mask of a dead man. I remember that the priest is dead and one of the Denarian is impersonating the man to get Harry to work on the case. Once more a twist in the last part of novel. Another reveal of the true title in the last part of the story.

Blood Rites

The blood rites performed to evoke an entropy curse gives the grounds for an obvious title in the story, but I think this like Summer Knight has a second meaning. Rites is also a homophone of rights, writes, and wrights. If we go with Blood Rights then I find we have a second story meaning. Thomas we learn is Harry’s older half-brother on his mother’s side. It is our right to know who our family is, blood or other side. Learning who his brother is answers to his right and an answer to something he is missing and wanting.

Dead Beat

Drummers are needed to carry the heartbeat of the dead and with 3 different necromancers in town that means we have 3 different dead beats. I would also like to comment that Grevane’s drummer is kind of a deadbeat guy.  The dead have a few extra twists in this, we meet Malcolm Dresden who has been dead for what I would assume is over 2 decades. The best dead beat is in the end of the story with POLKA WILL NEVER DIE.

Proven Guilty

This is hard, besides the first chapter of the young kid who is killed there is also Molly being found guilty and giving herself to the council for judgement. Charity also has something to confess and is proven guilty for hiding her secret it has made molly fall down the wrong path.

White Night

The white court of vampires are making an internal power play in this story. Harry is a catspaw for the house of Raith and is not getting any help from his brother. The white night can refer to the night harry confronts the white court as the catspaw, but like Summer Knight it could also be the white knight. As a warden of the white council he fights on the front line to defend those of magical talent. Women of magical talent are being hunted down and he challenges those responsible in a duel, just like a knight would.

Small Favor

This is an interesting because what Mab is asking is no small favor, after all he fights Gruffs, Denarians and calls in the archive getting her kidnapped and having to rescue her too. Well if that’s a small favor to Mab then I don’t want to know what a large favor is, oh wait there is Cold Days… I wanted to see what else is a small favor is this book. Could it be the gift of Soul Fire, Amoraccius, rescuing Marcone, or could it be returning the broach given to him and getting a donut? Honestly the donut is the smallest favor in the book.

Turn Coat

Everyone thinks that Morgan is a turn coat, Harry is hired by Morgan, pro bono that is to find the true traitor. Harry finds a turn coat in the White Court as well as the White Council. Thomas is also a turn coat in the story, He has turned from trying to protect his humanity to being more Incubus then before.

Changes

Let’s see how many changes are there in this book, Destruction of the Red Court, Susan changing into a vampire, learning about Maggie, Becoming the White Knight, The balance of power in the magical world, Murphy no longer working for CPD, The loss of his home, car, staff, everything he ever owned. There is a lot of changes in the story but the biggest change is at the very end of the story when Harry is shot, and he changes from life to dying maybe even dead.

Ghost Story

Harry is in the afterlife, or maybe the Chicago between life and death. He is a Ghost, he talks to Morty to get help since he is a ghost, Corpsetaker is a ghost now, and there is ghosts everywhere. I honestly don’t see how Ghost Story is hinting to anything special here so idk how to help.

Cold Days

Harry lives in Arctis Tor while doing physio therapy those would be very cold indeed. He learns the power of the Winter Knight and is finding the powers to be hard. What I find to be a surprise twist is how cold Mab is in allowing Murphy to kill her daughter so she can replace her, choosing Molly and forcing her into the role makes it colder still.

Skin Game

Harry is playing a con game, with shape shifters, Denarians, and a big foot. Playing a con you have to have your cards close to your chest so no one can see what you have. Playing against the Denarians is playing with your life. The title fits very well. The end of Skin Games there was one last discovery that Goodman Grey is a Skin Walker. Another good twist.

Peace Talks (Not yet released)

We know next to nothing about this book so far. I would like to speculate that while there is talks about having peace with the different factions of magical society. I feel like it’s a trap, while discussing peace the Fomor will stage an attack on all the representatives, if this is true, then they have to have enough power to take on the Queens of Fey, The White Council, House of Raith, and who knows how many others, showing that they only want to talk about peace.

Mirror, Mirror (not yet released)

On the wall who is the fairest one of all. Mirrors let things look in, or to travel in. Mirrors reflect into our souls. What if Harry and Evil Harry somehow switch places? This is hard to find out because Mirrors have so many possibilities.
