アルテミアとは、いわゆるブラインシュリンプです。基本3パーセント濃度の海水で孵化させます。うちのブラインシュリンプエッグは古いので乾燥しすぎで硬く、3パーセントでは孵化率が悪いのでぼくは4.5パーセントで孵化させています。

さて、スカベンジャーのコレプスをディッシュに取り、餌となる有機物を与えると爆発的に増えるのですが、今回は餌にアルテミアを与えてみました。死体ではなく、生きたものを与えます。

コレプスは淡水のプランクトン。ぼくのアルテミアは4.5パーセントの海水で孵化したプランクトンです。魚に与える前には海水をRO水で洗い流しますが、それでも少しは残っています。その証拠に、ディッシュ内のコレプスにピンセットの先にちょこっと付けたアルテミアを流し入れただけで何パーセントかは塩分にやられて動かなくなります。アルテミアはご存知の通りぴこぴこ泳ぎまくるので、ディッシュ内の淡水に海水分がほどよく混ざり合い、そのうちコレプスもアルテミアも元気に活動する均衡が生じます。

さて、前置きが長くなりましたが、アルテミアに餌を与えず何日か放置すると体内の栄養を吸収し終わって動けなくなり、死んでしまいます。死んだアルテミアはコレプスの餌となります。どこから体内に侵入するか。口か、鰓か、僕の予想は排泄口からです。いわゆる、お尻の穴ですね。アルテミアのお尻の穴は結構大きくて、ぱっかーんと開いているように見えました。

面白いのは、肛門から侵入した小さなコレプスが腸管に溜まっていたアルテミアの排泄物を餌として吸収し、透明のコレプスがオレンジ色になってまるまると太っていくんです。そして、まるまると育ちすぎた結果、アルテミアのお尻の穴から外へ出られなくなるんですね。アルテミアの外骨格は透明ですから、中で右往左往しているコレプスが見えて非常に面白い。

こういうのを見るのがぼくは大好きなので、何分でも覗いていられるんですが、アルテミアを生かしていたオレンジ色の栄養物が、死んだ後にコレプスを生かす栄養となり、アルテミアの中はコレプスでいっぱいになるんです。時たま、アルテミアの腕というか鰭が動くんですが、それは中でコレプスが出口を求めて右往左往している動きがそうさせているだけで、アルテミアはすでに死んでいるわけですね。アルテミアからコレプスに命が移っている。なんてことを感じながら、目が痛くなるまで顕微鏡を覗いています。

卵から孵化した手のアルテミアはお尻に卵の殻をしばらく付けています。おそらく、卵の殻の中にある何らかの栄養物を肛門から吸収しているか、逆に卵の中にいた頃に出来た老廃物を出しているかだろうと思いますが、この時も肛門はぱっかーんと開いている。非常に無防備なんです。孵化したては遊泳能力もなく、お尻に卵の殻をつけたままぼーっとしています。さて、生きたものには基本手を出さないと思われるコレプスですが、孵化した直後のアルテミアはよほど美味しいのでしょう、卵の殻の破れたところから肛門に侵入し、肛門からアルテミアの幼生の体内に侵入して内部がオレンジ色のコレプスだらけになっているシーンを見ることができました。コレプスに味覚はないでしょうが、美味しかったんだろうなって思います。
