backstory: belle was brought to the gatfords the year before devan was born, and adopted at age 5. in her birth home, belle was often left home alone as a young child, and forced to feed herself at most meals, sometimes left for whole nights, or missing school because her parents weren't there. most of her birth parents' money and time were spent on gambling and alcohol, but luckily belle was immediately brought to the gatfords when she entered the foster care system at age 4.

belle is an outwardly confident, fun-loving teenager and while she starts off as the story’s only human antagonist, causing chaos and anxiety unintentionally, belle makes things right and in the end she is what gets her brother through. belle is infinitely loyal despite her mistakes, and while she doesn’t trust easily, she relies on those she loves to keep her secrets safe.

there isn't exactly a name for this one but uhhh Family At The Hospital Times in ATEOTN

Teen Drama At Parties is 100% a trope

to expand, the party being in a Large Suburban Home is a pretty common thing and i would dare say it's a trope (think: any teen movie ever)

vampire-esque creatures are sort of a trope ("vampire fiction" exists but i personally debate whether vampires quite count or not)

found family!

i did definitely know about the found family and the Teed Drama At Parties but i did not know personified dragons or Hospital Times were tropes

also the love triangle i lowkey forgot about bc it makes me angry and i might work it out of ateotn lmao

hi there! get to know me here :)

hi friend! i go by River or Tov and they/he/fae/xe/she pronouns. i’m a queer and genderqueer teen writer and i also love reading and learning about language and its history/evolution.

my wips:

my main focus is called at the end of the night, which is about a group of teens dealing with Teen Things at a party. it’s basically just chill ya fiction. here’s an intro post, an intro powerpoint, and you can check the tag #ateotn for all things related!

i also have a second wip brewing, title tbd. it’ll be a high fantasy adventure with a little romance sprinkled in; i don’t have much planned out yet but the main cast is a group of dumbass queer twenty-somethings who are forced to save the universe. fun times. anything related will be tagged #fantasy wip 2022 

i have also started writing draft 2 of an old story called graveyard of the future. this is about 2 teens who discover a mysterious secret about their grandparents’ isolated life…i wonder what it could be??? tag is #gotf

as you can see from my wips, i tend mainly to write about fantasy and queer experience, sometimes the two intermingled.

obviously as a writer i also love to read and i read a lot. i read basically everything except historical fiction (with a few exceptions), chicklit and vampire/werewolf stories.

some other things i enjoy are theatre, dance, music, chocolate, cats, rainbows and stars. scream with me about them sometime.

pronouns: he/they | gender identity: demiboy (amab) | sexuality: pansexual | age: 14

backstory: devan is the only gatford kid blood-related to mummy and mo. they were conceived through ivf and has spent his whole life in the gatford home. he hasn’t always been happy about having two adopted sisters, but belle and tayah are dearer to devan than they’re sometimes willing to admit.

devan is a quiet, thoughtful and brooding kid, spending his time outside or on the couch with his family. they aren’t super affectionate, and maybe don’t have everything together yet, but as the story progresses we’ll see them go from a troublesome side character to a central focus for the others.

likes: hockey (he doesn’t play it, but since they were little he’s loved watching it and always wanted to play), gummy bears, spinach, the colours blue and grey together, spending time with their family, sleeping, cats, insects (especially ladybugs & butterflies), stars, swingsets.

dislikes: rodents (excluding rabbits), reptiles, honestly most animals (not birds tho), chocolate, orange and yellow, oranges, most fruit, french fries. he also has a general distaste for life.

pronouns: she/her | gender identity: trans female | sexuality: straight | age: 15

backstory: tayah’s father left when she was two, and her mom turned to alcohol. when sober, she was a kind, loving and attentive mother, but over the years these times became few and far between. at age 8, tayah told her mom she was a transgender girl, and her mom took it well - but when drunk, she tended to forget about her daughter’s new name and pronouns.

in fourth grade, tayah’s teachers learned of her mother’s alcoholism and, against tayah’s will, got her put in foster care. she spent a few years between homes, surviving emotionally, verbally and physically abusive homes and living in places she just didn’t belong. when tayah was 11, she was taken to the gatfords’, and she knew then that this was what family meant. at age 13 she was adopted.

tayah is an anxious, resourceful individual and starts off as the story’s main protagonist, while she proves to be her own worst enemy. she loves fiercely and is extremely protective of her adoptive family, especially younger brother devan. tayah’s an extrovert, but she’s shy and slow to trust.

likes: star trek, pretty little liars, music (she plays the uke, the saxophone and the flute), school, reading, playing video games with devan, overly sweetened coffee.

dislikes: gym class, brussels sprouts, public speaking, the colour green.

the gatfords - at the end of the night

the gatfords are a loving and accepting family of five: sarah, liz, belle, tayah and devan.

sarah and liz, otherwise known as mummy and mo, are the matriarchs of the household. sarah is caring, protective and, overall, the annoying one, while liz is a badass, shows minimal emotion and is basically an angsty twelve-year-old stuck in a gay mom’s body (but we all know she’s got a secret frilly side).

belle, the oldest, has just turned eighteen when our story begins. she was adopted into the family at age five. she’s playful, outgoing, and reckless - maybe a little too reckless.

tayah is our middle sibling at 15 years old. she was also adopted, when she was 13, and is a shy and creative transgender girl.

the youngest gatford sibling, devan, age 14, is technically mo’s nephew - her brother donated sperm to mummy for her pregnancy. he’s quiet and brooding, all sharp angles and rough edges - but he’s also flirtatious and, if we’re really being honest, quite the pansexual player.

finally getting to posting about my wip!

at the end of the night

a brief intro

genre: teen fiction/ya fiction

sub-genres: romance, lgbtq

length: between 36-42 chapters, word count unknown.

main characters: belle, tayah and devan gatford, three teenage siblings living in manitoba, canada (i dont think ill be giving them a city, but their school is called green acres secondary)

secondary characters: elliot deare, belle’s crush and possible boyfriend. cole wright, tayah’s crush and possible boyfriend. claire williams, a girl devan has been flirting with, and georgie-quin dennis, a boy whom devan has also been flirting with.

side characters: belle’s friends katie, lauren, jack and theo. devan’s friends noah casey, ivan stanley and owen abbott. tayah’s friends robin and alex. ellie, noah’s crush. mummy and mo, the siblings’ moms.

general plot: the siblings’ moms go on a retreat, and belle decides to host a party. between teen romance, complicated friendships and underage drinking, shit gets real.
