Not Here to Stay Friends Review
🦇 Not Here to Stay Friends Book Review 🦇
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
❝ Maybe this is my time to show everyone—show myself—that I can do things that are big and scary and out of character, things that force me to be the center of attention. ❞
❓ #QOTD Choose your trope: friends-to-lovers or enemies-to-lovers? ❓
🦇 The Bachelor and Riverdale meet Julie Murphy's If the Shoe Fits in this friends-to-lovers story of two lifetime friends. When Sloane McKinney visits her best friend Liam Daniels in LA for the summer, she never expects to step under the spotlight. Liam's dad gets them both involved in the teen reality dating show he's producing: Aspen Woods’s Future Leading Lady (AWFLL)—Liam as a PA and Sloane as a contestant. Teen heartthrob Aspen has set his sights on Sloane as his Leading Lady, but the real drama occurs behind the scenes as—plot twist!—Sloane and Liam finally begin to recognize their friends for one another. Can they make it to the finale without making a mess of their reunion?
💜 Not Here to Stay Friends is a cute young adult contemporary romance that gives a nod to the messy reality of reality television. Kaitlyn Hill does a wonderful job of balancing Sloane and Liam's tension alongside drama, problematic gender roles, and rom-com cuteness. The novel's true strength isn't in the friends-to-lovers growth, but in the healthy friendship Sloane and Liam use as the foundation for that growth. Their love and protectiveness over one another feels natural and sweet; a foundation that doesn't falter even despite the chaos occurring all around them. The twist at the end gave the reality TV side of the story the unique flare shows like The Bachelor often lack, defying story cliches that women need a Hollywood leading man for a happily ever after.
🦇 While there this novel doesn't warrant any big complaints, it's not exactly wow-worthy, either. Many of the characters come off as one-dimensional (Aspen, especially). While reality TV frames participants in that light, we're viewing AWFLL from behind the scenes; we should be getting more from the characters. Despite how cute Sloane and Liam are together, a little bit more about their friendship before Liam's move would have helped readers fall all the more in love with the pairing. Some of the film terms were incorrect as well (my girlfriend worked walkies on Stranger Things, and batteries are called bricks...also no one uses the phrase "10-4"), but I'll let that slide since Liam is new to the industry. Some thoughts repeat a bit too often as well, and there's not enough drama, tension, or high stakes to push the story forward. I'm sure this was on purpose, but the quotes from The Cove were Riverdale-cringy, failing to add depth to the story (beyond making me question Sloane's taste).
🦇 This adorable YA rom-com is perfect for fans of Riverdale, The Bachelor, and cozy comfort reads.
🌹 Friends to Lovers 🎥 Dual POV 🎬 Revenge Plot 🍿 YA Rom-Com
🦇 Major thanks to the author and publisher for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley. 🥰 This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Author Notes:
Okay, okay, I know I said "set after the events of 'The Quarry' ", but I HAD to expand on the 'pool scene meeting' I mentioned in 'Truth or Dare 2.0', coz honestly it seemed like a crime not to. So... Prequel oneshot first lol.
* * *
Goddamn summer.
It's only just begun and he's already done with it. It wasn't even this hot yesterday, Dylan's sure of it. But apparently, now the sun is deciding to be a massive dick and do its best to make everyone melt on the first day of camp. It's hard enough keeping track of a bunch of over-excited kids making their arrival to camp; adding unbearable levels of heat to the mix is just a recipe for disaster.
Not even the shade of the trees overhead was doing much to cool him down as he made his way down the path, the uphill climb towards the cabins only worsening the amount of sweat pouring out of him. On the bright side, he wasn't yet leading all the kids toward their five-star accommodations. Nope, it was just him, the box of stuff Mr. H asked him to store in the radio hut, and what he's pretty sure is about seventy-five percent of his body's water leaking onto the ground as he goes.
" 'Oh hey, can you go trek out in ninety-degree heat to a cabin with no air conditioning to store some old and rusting tools while we stay in the nice cool lodge?' " Dylan readjusted his sweaty grip on the box before it could potentially slip out of his hands. At this rate, all his sweat is gonna turn the cardboard into mush… " 'Oh sure, no problem! I'm sure, uh… uh—'" Dammit, what was her name? She told him literally five minutes ago, something like… "Kaitlyn! 'I'm sure Kaitlyn will LOVE testing out her first-aid abilities when you find me passed out, face down in this stupid box…'"
Dylan peeks into the contents of the box as he walked. Every year Mr. H wanted to store more and more stuff in the radio hut… It won't be long before it becomes a storage hut with a radio, instead of a radio hut with a bunch of crap lying about. Well… not crap, he knows all that stuff has got its uses, but still. What use does the owner of a summer camp have for a chainsaw, anyway? He's fairly certain that chopping down trees wasn't one of the activities offered on the curriculum this year…
Dylan crests the top of the hill (Thank Jesus—), trying his best to pretend he wasn't out of breath despite the fact that no one was around to judge him. He crosses over the small bridge, glancing right towards the direction of the radio hut, and that's when he hears it.
Yup… That was definitely the delighted 'we're doing something we shouldn't be' laughter of children. Man, he's glad it's daytime, because that sound in the middle of the night when it's pitch black would either have him swinging his fists wildly or screaming. Perhaps even both. At the same time, most likely. Not that he encourages violence against children, of course. But… y'know. Self-preservation and all that.
The laughter was coming from right up ahead, along with the subtle sounds of splashing water. Dylan peers closer at the pool house, looking past the fencing wrapped around the pool, and... yep, suspicion confirmed. He could just make out a few heads bobbing about in the water, making some attempt to stay quiet, but failing miserably as they giggle unabashedly and splash water at one another. Dylan sighed, dropping the box down next to the bridge with a groan. Alright, time to be a responsible counselor he guessed…
Even if he thought the kids had the right idea on how to beat this heat…
…And the non-responsible part of him — which was a lot of him — wanted to jump in that pool, too…
He had hoped that stepping into the pool house would provide some cooling relief, but nope — the building was practically an oven. Dylan caught the curse on the tip of his tongue as the door softly shut behind him, reminding himself that there were kids with keen ears just on the other side. He headed straight towards the towels, grabbing a stack of them before heading back out towards the pool.
The kids still hadn't noticed him, even as he approached the fencing, too wrapped up in… being kids, having fun in the water. He knew this was a hundred percent something he'd do as a camper if it was ever this hot, but unfortunately, he's not a camper anymore. Now he's gotta do some boring adult shit and make sure Chris's summer camp doesn't go out of business day one into the season because he let a bunch of kids drown.
He ducks through the hole in the fence that Chris swore he would get patched soon, and still the kids don't notice him. He puts the towels down on the bench attached to the side of the pool house, leaning his shoulder against the brick wall, arms loosely folded and leg crossed over the other as he waits for them to become aware of his presence. "Having fun?"
As expected, the kids squeal at the sound of his voice, panicked at being caught. He chuckles at the response, which seems to put the kids at ease a little bit. "You know, if you wanna try and sneak away to do stuff you're not supposed to, you really gotta get better at the whole 'keeping an eye out thing'."
"Sorry, Mr. Dylan…" One of the kids mumbles, all of them wearing matching expressions of guilt as they paddle in place.
"Ugh, no 'Mr', just Dylan," Dylan tells them, his exaggerated scrunched-up face of disgust getting a few giggles from some of the kids. He pushes himself off the wall, leisurely strolling up to the poolside where the kids were closest. "Look, I get it. It's hot, and you wanna cool down, right? But as much as we like to have fun here, we have to realize the dangers, okay? You'd be surprised how easy it is to…"
Something moving on the other side of the fence catches Dylan's eye — and attention. He turns his head towards it, seeing that—
Jesus Christ, that dude was gorgeous.
Seriously, it was unfair how attractive this guy was. He didn't even know who the hell he was; he'd definitely have remembered seeing him in orientation. Or speaking to him. God, he wondered if his voice sounded as good as he looked… That might just kill him.
Dylan could just about see he had a pair of earphones in his ears, connected to what he didn't know since Chris had already taken away their phones this morning. Then again, if the guy wasn't at orientation, maybe he didn't get a chance to. He was walking along like the heat wasn't bothering him in the slightest, nor the heavy weight of what looked to be way too many life jackets he was balancing in his arms. The only indicator that the heat of the day was affecting him was by the sheen of sweat coating his skin, and dammit, he even made that look good! Now that was just unfair. No one should look good covered in sweat, but here was this guy walking around looking like an oiled-up Greek God or something—
Dylan's next step meets air instead of the floor, which is a little confusing, to say the least. But then it very quickly meets water after, and the reality of how much of a big fucking idiot he is sinks in at the same time his entire body sinks to the bottom of the pool.
Whelp… This was embarrassing. There's no way the kids didn't see that, given that they had been watching him the entire walk over to the poolside. Probably meant they had seen him gaping at 'Mr. Unreasonably Hot' too before his dumb-ass tumbled over into the water. He could only hope that 'Mr. Unreasonably Hot' didn't see him falling in, too. Maybe he should stay down here and drown to save himself from the coming shame. It wasn't exactly like he could figure out a way to joke out of this situation—
Wait.
Maybe there was.
You know what, scratch his previous statements. He's not an idiot.
He's a genius.
Dylan kicks off the bottom of the pool, breaching the surface with a dramatic gasp for air, making exaggerated movements as he smacks at the water around him. "Oh no! What a fool I am! And with no lifeguard to help me?! Whatever will I do!"
The kids burst into a fit of giggles at his acting, watching with rapt attention as he 'struggles' over to the side of the pool. "If only I hadn't entered the pool by myself! If only I had made sure there was someone responsible for my safety watching over me! Now I must sit with the consequences of my actions, and face almost certain death! Oh, woe is me, left to drown when there's so much life ahead of—"
The sound of footsteps pounding toward them stops Dylan mid monologue, turning himself around to see who was coming. To his surprise — and yep, there was that embarrassment — it seemed that Mr. Unreasonably Hot had indeed noticed him falling in the pool. He wasn't entirely sure how given he had earphones in. Then again, he was giving his little lesson to the kids at a fairly loud volume. Along with all that splashing…
Yeah, okay, he would have had to be pretty oblivious not to notice.
The guy was racing towards him, life jackets discarded to the ground as he leaps through the hole in the fence, getting to what he perceived as an actual emergency as quick as he possibly could. It was… kind of touching actually that this guy who has no idea who he is was outright sprinting to his aid.
"Holy—" The guy skids to a stop at the edge of the pool, stopping himself from swearing just in time, and dammit, his voice did sound as good as he looked! "I heard- You just fell in, and-" The guy stumbles over his words, slightly out of breath from the impromptu run. "Are you okay?"
Dylan smiles up at his concerned face, easily swimming in place. "All good, man. Was just teaching these little rebels here about the dangers of swimming unattended."
The guy glances over to where the kids were still huddled together, some of the concern they were feeling about being in trouble returning now there were two counselors here. "Oh, you were…" The guy sighs, running a hand across his face. "Jesus, I thought you were drowning…"
"Sorry… Didn't mean to scare you," Dylan apologizes. The guy can only shake his head, another soft sigh kicking out of him. He bends down, anchoring himself in place and holding out a hand to Dylan. Dylan grabs hold, making sure to lean most of his weight into the side of the pool as the guy pulls him up, not wanting to be the asshole that drags the person trying to help into the pool with you.
"Alright, come on—" The guy calls to the kids still in the pool, hand still clasped with Dylan's as he gets to his feet. "Aren't you guys supposed to be back in the lodge for orientation?"
'Could say the same for you' Dylan thinks.
"Yeah…" The kids don't exactly hide their feelings on the matter, looking rather miserable as they make their way to the ladder of the pool. The guy finally (by which Dylan means regrettably) drops Dylan's hand, having spotted the towels Dylan had got for them. He heads over to them, grabbing the entire stack and handing them out to the kids as they unenthusiastically skulk over to him.
"Let me guess, you guys were already friends before you got here, huh?" Dylan asks.
"Uh-huh," one of the kid's answers, voice muffled by the towel he had thrown over his entire body, pulling off a very convincing ghost costume.
"Thought so. And yeah, I know, you just wanna get to camp and have fun with your friends, right? But the fun part about camp is making friends! Okay? All those other little dudes back at the lodge right now aren't just gonna be your fellow campers, but future friends you don't even know about yet. How cool is that!"
"But… it's hot," one of the kids whines.
"Yeah… Okay, yeah, it's hot," Dylan concedes. "But—"
"There'll be plenty of time to go swimming throughout summer." The guy jumps in. "Believe me, I used to come here as a camper all the time. In fact, you'll even get to go out to the lake, too."
That seemed to do the trick, the kid's disappointed faces lighting up with excitement. "We will?!"
"Yup. It's literally my job — to take you guys out sailing."
"See? Plenty of cool and refreshing fun to be had, and with a bunch of new friends you'll get to meet once you get back to the lodge!" Dylan adds, keeping his voice as upbeat and overly-enthusiastic as possible. "Now, get in that pool house and go change before I actually drown you."
Thankfully, the kids laugh at his fake threat, shrill and over-excited voices trailing off as their feet pitter-patter over to the door of the pool house. The two of them watch as the kids go, making sure they all filed into the pool house. They both look back at each other at the same time, and — oops, Dylan didn't realize they were standing that close together. He awkwardly clears his throat, taking a little step back to get out of the poor dude's personal space. "So, uh… You're the sailing instructor?"
"Yep," Mr. Unreasonably Hot - No, Mr. Sailing Instructor - wait, he's sure he saw the guy's name in the information booklet Chris sent out.
"Yeah, uh… You're Ryan, right?" Dylan holds out a hand for a handshake, and oh God, please let him have guessed right, please—
"Correct again," Ryan says with a hint of a smile, grabbing hold of Dylan's hand once again and giving it a shake. "Should I be concerned you knew my name without me telling you…?"
"Maybe," Dylan replies with a sinister smile. "You're very easy to stalk with those earphones in."
The handshake goes still. "Uh…"
"I'm just kidding," Dylan assures him, letting go of Ryan's hand. "Your name was in the booklet thingy Mr.H gave us, remember? 'Ryan the Sailing Instructor'."
"Oh, right. I, uh… I don't know what you do other than apparently nearly drowning yourself to… teach kids a lesson?"
Dylan snorts. "Nah, that's just my side hustle, y'know? All part of the counselor experience, I guess… I'm in charge of that beauty over there—" Dylan gestures with his thumb over his shoulder in the direction of the radio hut.
"The… radio…?" Ryan guesses, confusion briefly written across his face before brightening with his realization. "Oh! I guess that makes you Dylan."
"Ding, ding ding!" Dylan places a hand on his chest. "Meet DJ Dylan: The sultry voice you'll be waking up to every morning."
"Right, right, the- uh… radio announcements and all that. That's your role, then?"
"Sure is. Along with a bunch of other stuff I'm sure, since two of the counselors didn't show up…"
"Yeah, that's… Not great." Ryan pauses, looking Dylan up and down — particularly at the way he was still dripping. "Uh, do you want me to like… get you a towel…?"
"Nah, it's cool," Dylan waves him off. "Literally. You have no idea how much cooler I am now. I'll just drip dry." Dylan follows this by shaking his drenched mop of hair side to side. Ryan tries to turn away to avoid the spray of droplets that come from it, but his efforts prove fruitless.
"Dude…" Ryan protests weakly, arms stretched out to the side as he looks down at his water-speckled shirt.
"Oh, shoot…" Dylan says, tone not at all apologetic. "I'd say I'm sorry, but technically you should be thanking me for cooling you off."
"I'd… rather cool off in a way that doesn't make me smell like chlorine. But… thanks?"
"You are more than welcome," Dylan says, dipping his head in a mini bow. "So, uh… How come I didn't see you in orientation?" Dylan places his hands on his hips, his ask getting a questioning eyebrow raise from Ryan. "Or… didn't meet you, at least."
"Oh, no, I was - um…" Ryan trails off, gesturing with a thumb behind his back as he glances back in the direction of the lodge. "I wasn't at orientation."
"Oh. Cool, that… answers my question. Very informative, thank you, Ryan."
Ryan huffs, glancing away to hide the subtle smile on his face. "Yeah, uh… I needed to talk to Mr. H before the kids arrived, and he sent me out to go fetch some of the life jackets he left stored in one of the cabins last year, so…"
"So… you were skipping orientation?"
"No—"
"But you weren't there?"
"Well, yeah, but…" Ryan sighs, readying himself for this explanation. "Sometimes meeting so many people at once is kind of… overwhelming? It's not that I don't want to meet you guys, but… I'd prefer to do it in my own time. Y'know… gradually."
"Hey, I get it," Dylan holds his hands up. "Honestly, I think you had the better idea. Meet your co-workers one by one… Maybe rescue one from drowning in the pool…?"
Ryan snorts, looking as surprised at his own snort as Dylan was to hear it. He coughs to cover it, hiding behind his clenched fist. "Uh, yeah… I mean, I'll definitely remember you after this."
"If anything, I am a memorable person," Dylan gloats. "And I'm sure I'll remember the guy who came to my rescue."
"Hard to forget, I'm sure," Ryan played along. His eyes slid over to the pool house, a little unsettled by the uncharacteristic silence from the kids inside. "We should probably…" Ryan flops his hand up to point towards the pool house. "Get them ready to head back to the lodge."
"Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Doubt they know how to get back by themselves on the first day…" Dylan agrees, the two of them beginning a slow walk towards the front of the pool house. Hopefully, Ryan won't have noticed the way his voice had lost some of its brightness, perhaps a little disappointed that their conversation was coming to an end. Dylan looks over to the bridge where he had left his box, chewing thoughtfully on his lip. "Hey, uh… Any idea where I can quickly store a box full of rusty tools and a chainsaw where the kids won't get their hands on it? Probably wouldn't be too responsible of me to leave it laying about while I get the kids back."
"Uh… No. But don't worry, man, I'll… I'll get the kids back to the lodge," Ryan offers, both of them coming to a stop just outside the doors of the pool house.
Dylan's brow shoots up at the offer. "You sure?"
"Yeah, it's cool. I was headed down towards the lake anyway, so I can drop off the kids at the lodge on the way back."
Dylan smiles brightly at Ryan, his smile seemingly proving to be infectious as he gets the first real pull of a smile at Ryan's lips that he's seen — and not attempted to hide. "Sweet! Man, first coming to my rescue and now offering to take a bunch of rebellious kids off my hand?" Dylan walks back as he speaks, holding a hand over his chest for dramatic effect. "Man after my own heart, Ryan."
Ryan hums in a way of both acknowledgment and also in a way that sounded a lot like 'ha, ha, real funny', watching Dylan and his unwavering grin as he goes. Dylan quickly snatches up the box from the ground, turning back to Ryan. "I'll be seeing you around, Ryan," he says, balancing the box in one hand whilst giving Ryan a mock salute, heading back down the path in the direction of the radio hut.
"Just… Maybe not drowning next time?" Ryan calls after him as he goes.
Dylan spins around to face Ryan, teeth gleaming in the sun as he all but skips backward. "Hmm, I dunno… Maybe I'll go for a 'dangerous' swim in the lake… Have our camp's sexy sailing instructor come save me again." Dylan throws in a wink for good measure, turning back around to face where he was walking before he could get a chance to see Ryan's reaction.
The kids apparently had terrible timing and had exited the pool house just in time to hear that last comment. If Ryan said anything in response, Dylan wasn't able to hear it over the chorus of enthusiastic, "Oooooo's!" of the kids, quickly followed by a chorus of, "Mr. Dylan and Mr. Ryan, sitting in a tree! K - I - S - S—"
"Alright, alright, knock it off…" Ryan's grumble in response only gets more laughter from the kids. Dylan could just about hold in his own laughter at the response, not able to see the way Ryan's eyes followed him the whole way up to the radio hut.
It was only once the door of the hut had swung shut behind him and he had carefully put the box down that he glanced out of the window back in the direction of the pool house. He couldn't help but smile softly to himself at the sight of poor Ryan trying his best to pick the life jackets back up whilst a group of children flock around him, all vying for his attention.
Two whole months of summer camp, huh?
Maybe this would be more fun than he thought…

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag
I honestly just don’t have anywhere to put this (though I might make a thread of my answers on twitter too, I’m still debating it), and I really wanted to answer and play along with the cool kids, so I’m tossing it up on here. All this is going to do is show off my indecisiveness, but hey ho. I like rambling about books.
(Under a cut though because this got really long. Shocker.)
Best book you’ve read so far this year? I’m super late to the game, but Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas was definitely one of them that I finished and just wanted to kick myself for putting it off for so long. It’s such a beautiful, carefully written, inclusive story, and it deserves all the hype it’s gotten. Runners up: The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun, Love From Scratch by Kaitlyn Hill.
Best sequel you’ve read so far this year? Where the Drowned Girls Go by Seanan McGuire, probably! I’m the biggest fan of Wayward Children series, and every time we get a new novella, it feels like coming home. (Also, Seanan McGuire is doing some of the best work writing diverse main characters in the game right now, I swear.) Runner up: Saga #55 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, making a triumphant return after a nearly four year hiatus.
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to? I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston. Yes, I’m kicking myself that I haven’t picked it up yet. No, I don’t want to talk about it. I’ll get to it soon, I swear. Honestly. Runner up: Book of Night by Holly Black.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year? There is no simple answer here. You get a list: Nine Liars by Maureen Johnson Greywaren by Maggie Stiefvater Husband Material by Alexis Hall Paris Daillencourt is About to Crumble by Alexis Hall Empty Smiles by Katherine Arden Stellarlune by Shannon Messenger
Biggest disappointment? Definitely The Temperature of Me and You by Brian Zepka. I got an ARC of this from NetGalley and was so excited about it (queer romance + super powers? sign me the hell up), and it just... it was so bad. It was a great premise, and probably could be a good book, but it needs so much work to get there. The plot is all tied up in a neat, incredibly unrealistic bow, and nothing is ever explained. Nothing makes any sense. Runner up: Gallant by Victoria Schwab, and that pains me to say. Look, I adore V, I really do, but this one was a bit of a let down in that not much happened. It’s very, very atmosphere-driven, very reliant on V’s lyrical prose over plot. Beautiful book to listen to (and hold a physical copy of - the illustrations are gorgeous), but a bit lacking.
Biggest surprise? Probably Bravely by Maggie Stiefvater. Brave was never my favorite Disney movie, but this was a great companion novel. Disney couldn’t have asked a better author to take on this book, given Maggie’s History degree focusing on early Scottish history, along with her knowledge-base of Celtic culture and mythology. I liked the ARC I read of it so much that I bought a physical copy as well. Runner up: The Audacity of Sara Grayson by Joani Elliott. I went into this knowing nothing about it really, no real expectations - it just happened to be the book of the month one month for my work book club - and it was a delight. A love letter to anxious writers with imposter syndrome, I swear.
Favorite new (to you or debut) author? Hmm. Can I say Rachel Smythe? I read the bind-up Volume One of Lore Olympus and loved every second of it. I wanted to dive right in to reading it all on webtoons, and I did start to after finishing the volume, but it fell to the backburner as life got hectic. But I just got Volume Two in the mail today, and I’m very, very excited.
Newest fictional crush? Benny from Love From Scratch (the pun game is so strong with this one, not to mention the sheer level of support he gives to Reese) or Mei from Under the Whispering Door (get you a girl who will jump to your defense with kitchen knives at the slightest need).
Newest favorite character? Charlie from The Charm Offensive. The mental health and diverse sexuality representation in this book meant a lot to me, but Charlie in particular... I’m not sure I’ve ever read a ‘romantic hero’ character, so to speak, that deals so openly and on-page with anxiety and depression and OCD and isn’t shunned or seen as unlovable for it, and I needed that.
Book that made you cry? Back to Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune again. So much crying, but in a good way, if that makes sense? The book centers on the stages of grief, so there’s a lot of talk about love and loss, about how to make the most of the time we have with people, about how it’s never enough time. Ever. And it made me sob, but then glued my heart back together again, and I loved every second of it.
Book that made you happy? Network Effect by Martha Wells. The Murderbot Diaries series is my go-to comfort reread - I’ve gone through the whole series five times, I think? In two years? Anyway, this is easily one of my favorite books of all time now, and the most satisfying reunion plotline I’ve ever read in a book. Period.
Most beautiful book you received or bought so far this year? The special edition Diviners Series (by Libba Bray) bind-up from The Bookish Box. This series was done incredibly dirty by the publishing industry and never given a full set of all 4 books in the same format (as in, all hardback or all paperback) with matching covers. There are... I think 4 different variations on covers for the series - they changed it that many times - but never was the full series done to match, ever. Two book boxes did gorgeous sets of them this year, but this one... this one is truly magical.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year? Ahahaha, so many. Again, you get a list, because I can’t pick just one or two: Ariadne by Jennifer Saint (Ariadne is my all-time favorite character from Greek mythology, and she is constantly forgotten. She got a whole book written about her and I haven’t read it yet, and honestly how?) Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson Something Fabulous by Alexis Hall A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall The Bronzed Beasts by Roshani Chokshi Beyond the End of the World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner Wild is the Witch by Rachel Griffin (This is my only currently lingering ARC on NetGalley, so I need to get to it before early August, ahhhh.)

Blog Tour: Top 5 Reasons to Read NOT HERE TO STAY FRIENDS by Kaitlyn Hill! #tbrbeyondtours
Tumblr media
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours blog tour for Not Here to Stay Friends by Kaitlyn Hill! I’ve got all the details for you below, along with my top 5 reasons to read this laugh-out-loud YA contemporary!
About the Book
Tumblr media
title: Not Here to Stay Friends author: Kaitlyn Hill publisher: Delacorte Press release date: 4 April 2023
This friends-to-lovers spin on The Bachelor follows two childhood besties reuniting to spend the summer in L.A. after five years apart—but when they both get involved with a teen reality dating show, their lives take an unexpected turn for the unreal.
Sloane McKinney feels like a background character in her own life. But this summer will be different, because she’s spending it with her childhood best friend, Liam Daniels, in her dream city, Los Angeles. Sure, she’s surprised to find that Liam just happens to have had a Hot Guy glow-up since she last saw him, but so what? A little attraction won’t ruin her plans for their fun—and completely platonic—reunion.
What might, however, is that Liam has been roped into working for his producer dad’s new teen reality dating show, Aspen Woods’s Future Leading Lady. Liam figures Sloane can still hang out with him on set while he fetches coffee for the film crew, or whatever it is that production assistants do. Except it turns out the show is one contestant short . . . and Sloane is the perfect last-minute addition.
Once cameras are rolling, the whirlwind of dating teen heartthrob Aspen Woods feels way more real than Sloane expected, and Liam doesn’t exactly enjoy watching it all unfold. But it’s behind the scenes where the drama really picks up. . . .
Because wanting to kiss your best friend? That’s a plot twist neither Sloane nor Liam ever saw coming.

Top 5 Reasons to Read
1. It’s laugh-out-loud funny: I can’t tell you how many times I giggled, snorted, or outright belly-laughed while reading. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that has made me laugh out loud, and it gave me such joy to read!
2. It’s a great example of the friends-to-lovers trope: Sloane and Liam have been best friends since the beginning of their lives, being next-door neighbors in Tennessee until they were 12 and having kept up their friendship after Liam’s family moved to L.A. Their relationship is adorable and had me remembering my own close childhood friendships. And while Sloane and Liam have never thought about each other this way before, when they finally get to be together in person after a long time, each comes to realize they’re feeling quite a bit more for the other than just friendship. Watching those ideas take root and blossom had even me, an avowed enemies-to-lovers-is-the-best-trope fanatic, swooning at the possibility of this friendship becoming something more!
3. There’s a fun reality TV setting: In L.A. for the summer to visit Liam, Sloane is recruited by his producer father to be a last-minute contestant on a The Bachelor-like reality TV show filming that month, featuring the leading man from their favorite teen TV drama. With Liam serving as a P.A. on the set as well, we get fun behind the scenes peeks into what life is like on this kind of show. And all the while, Sloane tries to figure out if she’s really pretending to fake-date this Hollywood heartthrob or maybe starting to feel something for him -- as she also struggles with maybe feeling something more for her best friend.
4. Serious issues are touched on despite the light mood: It’s not all fun and games, of course; Sloane and Liam face some serious issues over the course of the book. One example from their childhood stuck with me, when Liam says, “We haven’t been hand-holding friends since we were six or so, when someone--almost certainly the same kind of straight person who throws gender-reveal parties--called us each other’s ‘little boyfriend and girlfriend.’ Until then, I don’t remember being aware that Sloane was anything but my best friend.” Why do we put such pressures on kids as young as six, and their innocent little friendships??
5. It’s a great example of girl power and how powerful women can be when we come together as a united sisterhood: This just may be my favorite aspect of the book, maybe aside from the swoony romance. I can’t say any more than this so as not to spoil the read, but I was cheering on an amazing group of young women who took their power back!
I hope these reasons are enough to have you picking up Not Here to Stay Friends, and I hope even more that you enjoy it as much as I did! Thanks so much to TBR and Beyond Tours and the author and publisher for having me on the tour and letting me read an eARC of this funny and swoony contemporary YA novel!

With all live performances canceled, this was truly the year of demo videos and home studio recording for me. These are 10 pieces of gear that came out in 2020 that helped keep me feeling creative and inspired during lockdown. In no particular order:
EHX Oceans 12 Dual Stereo Reverb - The Oceans 12 ticks all the boxes for what I’m looking for in a great soundscaping reverb. I used the Shimmer and Reverse algorithms in conjunction a lot when I was composing music for a film score.
Chase Bliss Audio Blooper - While I don’t actually own a Blooper, I had the pleasure of borrowing one from Mike of Baranik Guitars after NAMM this year. He made an incredible Blooper-inspired guitar and I was completely charmed by them both. Chase Bliss always delivers pedals that push me creatively and the Blooper truly hits the mark.
Cooper FX Arcades - I love everything Cooper FX has released to-date so the opportunity to access those sounds in one pedal via plug-in cartridges is just awesome.
SolidGoldFX NU-33 - I was asked to do a demo of this pedal for its release and ended up being really charmed by this box’s approach to lo-fi nostalgia. I’ve used it a lot for film scoring and highly recommend adding it to your collection.
Demedash Effects T-120 DLX V2 - I LOVE a good tape echo and the T-120 Deluxe V2 ranks up there with the best I’ve tried. This pedal made its way to me this Christmas and I look forward to making some beautiful sounds with it in the new year.
Hologram Electronics Microcosm - The Microcosm is one of those pedals where you should fully read the manual before diving in but once you put in that initial effort you’ve got a massively powerful tool on your hands. It does glitch like no other. Definitely worth the homework
Azzam Bells MP019 - I discovered this unique instrument through a post on Reverb’s IG page and immediately looked it up and ordered one. These experimental percussion instruments are hand-made in Italy and they’re as beautiful visually as they are sonically. I used it for bowed cymbal and daxophone sounds on a film score and it was absolutely haunting.
Echopark Dual Harmonic Boost 2 - I love the control you have over dialing in the perfect amount of grit with these dual boost circuits. I use it a lot as a textural tool when I’m laying down drones or bringing in big distorted swells. It’s one of the most versatile overdrives in my collection and I love that.
Fender Parallel Universe Series Volume II Maverick Dorado - I was smitten with the Maverick Dorado when I first saw it at NAMM. It has a lot of the specs that I look for in a guitar and the body shape with the Mystic Pine finish just blew me away. I hope that I get to use it live soon.
Polyeffects Beebo - The Beebo is one of those pedals that I genuinely feel is smarter than I am. It’s like an entire computer in one small touchscreen box. I can’t claim to have mastered using it yet but the sounds that I have managed to get out of it so far have been brilliant. I’m looking forward to spending more time with this box in 2021

HELM 2020 REVIEW
Let's get the bad stuff out the way first, 2020 was undoubtedly an awful year. I'm still not sure how to really respond to seeing a global pandemic bring the capital to its knees and everything I love and hold dear to a grinding halt. Our government fucked it's response, putting profit before people and killing tens of thousands. The Labour Party descended into farce with the newly elected leader Sir Keith revealing himself as a bland centrist with no opposition or ideas. On a personal level it sucked not being able to travel or see my friends in different parts of the world - or even the same country - who I am starting to miss a lot. However, I was fortunate enough to get through the year with my sanity intact. Music, art and culture once again being my main positive. I think I listened to more music than I have in any year ever. I read more books than I have done since I was a teenager probably. I also re-discovered the joys of walking long distances and am extremely thankful for living near a lot of incredible green spaces: Epping Forest, Walthamstow Wetlands, Walthamstow Marshes, Wanstead Park, Wanstead Flats...
Music. My favourite albums of the year.

A shout-out to Jon Abby's AMPLIFY series on Bandcamp / Facebook, which I contributed a new piece of music to.
A shout out to the labels where most of the music I listened to seemed to come from:
The Trilogy Tapes Iron Bonehead Penultimate Press Dais La Vida Es Un Mus
Gigs. Despite live music being destroyed in 2020 I still saw a few unforgettable performances at the beginning of the year.
Graham Lambkin @ The ICA, London Puce Mary / JFK @ The Glove That Fits, London Demilich @ Finnfest, The Garage, London Container / PC World / National Unrest @ Venue MOT, London S.H.I.T / Asid / Chubby & The Gang @ Static Shock Festival, ExFed, London
Books I enjoyed. Most not published this year, but all read in 2020.
Joe Kennedy - Authentocrats David Balzer - Curationism Tom Mills - BBC: The Myth Of A Public Service Simon Morris - Consumer Guide: Special Edition Luke Turner - Out Of The Woods Various - Bad News For Labour Mike Wendling - Alt-Right Baited Area issues 1 & 2.
Film. Three good films I saw this year which I hadn't before.
Suspiria (Remake) Midsommar Cannibal Holocaust
Podcasts. I listened to a lot of these whilst walking.
We Don't Talk About The Weather Novara Media Tysky Sour & Novara FM Grounded with Louis Theroux System of Systems Red Scare loveline episodes Suite 212 NOISEXTRA Social Discipline CONTAIN
TV.
Didn't watch a huge amount and what I did was mostly trash. For some reason I rewatched both series' of This Life, a British drama from the late 90's about a group of young professionals house sharing and navigating their careers. Very cringey and has aged terribly, but it was perversely fascinating to revisit something from that time in the age of the pandemic. Following on from this I binge watched the entire series of Industry which was entertaining enough. A programme about a bunch of horny bankers with what felt like a confused ideology behind it. It seemed stuck between trying to criticise and glorify the culture around the industry, but also protect the industry itself from outside criticism by portraying anyone who may oppose as an insufferable wanker. Currently halfway through Succession which is OK. The Murdoch documentaries on the BBC were excellent and a rare respite from their descent into client journalism.
Thanks to anyone who listened to my music this year also. Best wishes to you all for 2021.

1. My Nr. 1 lesson: patience. Whether it's bouncing through 30 seconds of severe turbulence at 39000 feet or slogging through 30 minutes of a interminable piece of concert music, one attribute I've tried to develop is the ability to see past the discrete and awaited ending, the exact framing of the immediate process, but put it into the context of a larger time frame. I've found that this year more than all others has demanded it. Breathing helps...
2. Books: revisiting old favorites from the realm of Thomas Pynchon and Philip K. Dick (both especially relevant), digging into John Lomax's portrait of Jelly Roll Morton, the works of Colson Whitehead, random things off of the shelf…
3. Composing: with touring off the table, I focused on that which needed to be written, some requested and commissioned, some spontaneously springing forth. Composing requires that one open the windows wide to the world, which at this moment brought in grief, terror, uncertainty, anxiety, visions of plague and pestilence and incipient fascism. Okay, now shut the window and get to work! How to process, translate, transform? The work can be a comfortable and obsessive cocoon once one learns to handle the radioactive materials and put them into the creativity reactor.
4. Beans! We have long been a fan in our house of the wide world of legumes but this year brought two stars to the front: the black bean and the red lentil. The black bean commands the lofty peaks but the seemingly infinite variations of dal surround it. Ginger, garlic, turmeric, smoked paprika, cayenne, onions, and olive oil form the basis then imagination builds.
5. Online teaching substituted for my canceled conduction of workshops in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. Between the participants and myself, we built a temporary but very congenial space online to share concepts and music. In addition, private lessons brought conversation and music with new friends in Germany, Italy, California, Australia, Illinois, Denmark, Pennsylvania, Spain, Florida, Brazil.
6. What started out as "stress baking" (before I even had heard of the term) soon became a frequent practice that yielded very edible results. The twins preferred the sweeter forays into banana bread and chocolate cake. I tried to find a balance between tried-and-true techniques and experiments in texture and taste with yeasted pumpernickels, multi-grains, and seed breads.
7. While not the same as performing 'live ', online gigs proved that it was possible to generate a surprising amount of adrenaline even without the pheromonal handshaking of a room filled with receptive ears. As a corollary, online recording collaborations with friends worldwide proved to be inspiring and a suitable substrate for sonic experimentation, exploration of new instruments, tunings, effects programming, structures. In these realms, shout-outs to Helene Breschand, Mike Cooper, Henry Kaiser, Tracie Morris, Mikel Banks, Dougie Bowne, Payton McDonald, Billy Martin, Colin Stetson, Jim O'Rourke, Scott Amendola, Roberto Zorzi, Jason Hoopes, Eric Mingus, Melanie Dyer, Dave Hofstra, Don McKenzie, Sergio Sorrentino, Veniero Rizzardi, Taylor Ho Bynum, Scott Fields, Bachir Attar, Karl Bruckmaier, Robbie Lee, Matthew Evan Taylor, Matteo Liberatore, Al Kaatz, David Barratt, Jessica Hallock, Kolin Zeinikov, Robbie Lee, Jeremy Nesse, James Ilgenfritz, Sergio Armaroli, Steve Piccolo, Sandy Ewen, David Weinstein, Jim Whittemore, Chris Vine, Werner Puntigam, William Schimmel.

Ten Things That Didn’t Happen in 2020
1.  I didn’t write a ton of new music. Don’t get me wrong, I wrote some. I always do. But mostly I focused on my new YouTube channel, essays, and on getting old recordings released. I haven’t even been working a day-job so I thought I was going to write my next Ring Cycle, but I really didn’t find Covid inspiring.
2.  Trump wasn’t re-elected. Cool.
3. I didn’t lose anyone to Covid. I am, of course, profoundly grateful for this. But I feel pretty embarrassed remembering group-texting ten friends in March, “We are all going to see a loved one die. Every single one of us. Don’t kid yourselves”. I can get hysterical, and that was somewhat irresponsible of me.
4.  No revolution happened. I don’t mean to be smug or cynical, or to belittle anyone’s participation in the protests. But, as far as I can tell, nothing happened in 2020 that promises to reduce police brutality or human suffering of any kind. We’ll see. That burning Minneapolis police station was exciting to watch at the time, if only on an aesthetic level.
5.  I have a stack of unread books I bought this year, just staring at me, with nary a crease among them. These include:
Adorno and Horkheimer, The Dialectic of Enlightenment (looks amazing, but I haven’t touched it) Marx, Grundrisse (it’s 1000 pages for fuck’s sake. Amazon also accidentally sent me two copies, and its double presence in the stack is just comical) Reza Negarestani, Intelligence and Spirit (the first 15 pages blew my mind, then my mind blew it off)
6.  I didn’t settle into living in LA. I moved here six months before Covid and I was just starting to cultivate some friendships and play shows. This was quashed and I still feel like I still live in New York. I still barely know the layout of the city here.
7.  No brand-new buzzy musical artists burst onto the scene, that I can recall. No new hyped micro-genre of the moment. There was just no way for there to be a hot new trend. I’d say that was refreshing, but it wasn’t.
8.  Tyson’s return was not awesome. Two minute rounds, ended in a draw. I’ve been getting way into boxing this past year. This fight was a bummer. I’m looking forward to Mayweather vs Logan Paul (LOL) because we know it’s comedy ahead of time.
9.  For three weeks in July, I didn’t do a single thing other than watch street fight compilations on YouTube and Worldstar. That’s just grim.
10.  There were no school shootings in March. Apparently, this was the first March with no school shootings since 2002. Not a single 7th grader got a hand job in March either. I cannot begin to imagine what it’s like to be a kid now.

Work 2020
Despite Covid 19 lots of things actually did happen.
In Feburary I visited the only active nuclear plant in The Nederlands as part of my "Expanded Field Recording” project together with SML. In March revisited the Acousmonium at the Elevate Festival in Graz with an additional trip deep inside the Schlossberg recording old mining trains. In March and April I did two daily recording projects “Pending and Auditory Scenes” - both of Amsterdam during lockdown. In May did my first Zoom field recording workshop with the CAMP project. In June & July  two research trips in Waldviertel, Austria with Franz Pomassl. In August recorded bells and organs in 10 different churches around Amsterdam for Jacob Lekkerkerker. In September recorded Kali Malone at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. Performed at Heart of Noise Festival in Innsbruck and A4 in Bratislava. Also went ice-skating for first time in 20? Years. In November and December I travelled to Jeju island to record field recordings for a project by Femke Herregraven for the Gwangju Biennale, commissioned for 2021. Did lots of gardening, released two tapes “Call it Philips, Eindoven” and “Zomer 2020” with Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson. NOW! Looking forward to 2021.

“As archaeologists—with our reliance on the material world serving as the basis of our interpretations of the past—we must question Western assumptions about how the world is organized and divided in terms of the roles and significance played by ‘things.’ This book does just that.” —Linda Brown, George Washington University “This is an impressive collection written by a wide range of specialists each of whom makes an important contribution.” —Chris Fowler, Newcastle University
Relational Identities and Other-than-Human Agency in Archaeology explores the benefits and consequences of archaeological theorizing on and interpretation of the social agency of nonhumans as relational beings capable of producing change in the world. The volume cross-examines traditional understanding of agency and personhood, presenting a globally diverse set of case studies that cover a range of cultural, geographical, and historical contexts.
Agency (the ability to act) and personhood (the reciprocal qualities of relational beings) have traditionally been strictly assigned to humans. In case studies from Ghana to Australia to the British Isles and Mesoamerica, contributors to this volume demonstrate that objects, animals, locations, and other nonhuman actors also potentially share this ontological status and are capable of instigating events and enacting change. This kind of other-than-human agency is not a one-way transaction of cause to effect but requires an appropriate form of reciprocal engagement indicative of relational personhood, which in these cases, left material traces detectable in the archaeological record.
Modern dualist ontologies separating objects from subjects and the animate from the inanimate obscure our understanding of the roles that other-than-human agents played in past societies. Relational Identities and Other-than-Human Agency in Archaeology challenges this essentialist binary perspective. Contributors in this volume show that intersubjective (inherently social) ways of being are a fundamental and indispensable condition of all personhood and move the debate in posthumanist scholarship beyond the polarizing dichotomies of relational versus bounded types of persons. In this way, the book makes a significant contribution to theory and interpretation of personhood and other-than-human agency in archaeology.

Business School Briefing: Change management cliché, MBA jobs surge
Welcome to the Business School Briefing. We bring you insights from Andrew Hill and the Business Education team, plus a selection of the top stories read in business schools. Edited by Wai Kwen Chan and Andrew Jack.

Work and career
An FT survey shows that many university graduates feel that they have not found a job that matches their career aspirations. Some have even returned to full-time education. The FT business school ranking, for example, shows that applications for MBA or Masters in Finance have increased.
Women at the start
How can you tell if companies are delivering results when it comes to tackling inequality in the workplace? Take a look at our special report “Women at the Start” and read career tips from graduates of the 2008 financial crisis.
Andrew Hill’s Management Challenge
The overused cliché of change management, the “burning platform”, must finally be erased. As I argue in my column this week, illustrating the leap or sinking is inadequate, inadequate and, in order to motivate employees, potentially counterproductive.

But what should it replace? For my Management challenge, please come up with a better story to create a sense of urgency among employees faced with strategic change. Send your concise metaphors to [email protected].
Last week, I asked what Jeff Bezos should do to make employee turnover at Amazon more manageable. Scott Nicoll on Twitter (@Scott_GKDSIFA) replied, “Pay them a decent wage above the minimum wage and keep them going[, then] offer the opportunity to participate in a stock savings program with a term of 5 years. If they leave, they’ll only get back cash minus administration fees. Loyalty rewarded ”. Among other things, the author and business school professor Rita Gunther McGrath suggested: “Stop bringing ‘super-intelligent’ young things as managers / supervisors while you deny hourly or subordinate employees a career path”.
Regular readers will know that I am a weakness for explaining the recent checkered history of Eastman Kodak, having written about its rise and fall. in the Continue reading, Kaitlyn Tiffany of The Atlantic, who grew up near Rochester, Kodak’s hometown, offers the prospect of a millennial. Kodak, she writes, provided “both a perfect invention that changed the world and a beautiful story of the life that the country’s middle class could not only dream of but expect. All of that ended before I was even born. “

Job openings for MBA graduates have rebounded this year, with hiring and salary levels returning to pre-pandemic levels. Data from the Graduate Management Admission Council’s annual employer survey, reported to the Financial Times, shows the average salary for MBAs this year has returned to the all-time high of 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic, down from $ 105,000 in of the 2020 survey. According to the study, demand was fueled by interest in business graduates among tech companies, with 96 percent telling GMAC that they would like to hire MBAs this year, a three-year high for the survey.
Higher education suffers from the perception that it is disconnected from the world of work. The University of Illinois’ Gies College of Business is trying to overcome this by making experiential learning compulsory for all junior year students. Starting this fall, the school will enroll around 800 students to work on more than 130 customer projects for Fortune 100 companies, medium-sized companies and start-ups.

Copyright is a legal means of protecting an author's work, a type of intellectual property for exclusive publication, distribution, and usage rights for the author. Any content the author has created cannot be used or published by anyone else without the consent of the author.
The length of copyright protection usually lasts for the life of the author plus 50 to 100 years.
In Australia, copyright in artistic works lasts 70 years, 50 years for radio and television broadcasts and 25 years for published editions.
Penalties range from receiving a sternly worded letter to spending time in jail. It all depends on the details of the infringement.

The artist found a postcard by Art Rogers featuring a photo of a smiling man and woman holding a litter of puppies. Koons removed the copyright label from the postcard and his assistants created a near identical sculpture in 1998. Rogers sued and eventually prevailed when the court found that a “reasonable observer” would see that Koons had copied the piece which was neither a parody nor original enough, and thus fair use didn’t come into play.
Tumblr media
Shephard Fairey created the Hope poster during President Obama’s first run for presidential election in 2008. In January 2009, the photograph on which Fairey allegedly based the design was revealed by the AP as one shot by AP freelancer Mannie Garcia — with the AP demanding compensation for its use in Fairey’s work. Fairey responded with the defense of fair use, claiming his work didn’t reduce the value of the original photograph.
The artist and the AP press came to a private settlement in January 2011, part of which included a split in the profits for the work.
You are not allowed to use any part of the image which is protected by copyright.
Moral rights protect the personal relationship between a creator and their work even if the creator no longer owns the work, or the copyright in the work.
You may do this by including a statement such as "XXX has asserted his right under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, 20XX, to be identified as the author of this work." in your work.
