'Ghosts' of the Coal Mines

These horses or "pit ponies" were deprived of experiencing the sunlight and fresh air. Instead, they lived in darkness underground, relying on their instincts and the guidance of their human partners, known as conogons. These horses were born, worked, and perished in the dark, enduring strenuous labor. It was not uncommon for a single horse to pull up to eight heavy coal wagons alone. Despite their challenging circumstances, these animals maintained their dignity and were aware of their rights, such as refusing to move if they felt burdened with excessive wagons. They also possessed a remarkable sense of time, knowing when their working day should end and finding their way back to the stables even in darkness. This demanding work of horses in the mines continued until 1972 when technology took over, marking the end of an era. On December 3, 1972, Ruby, the last miner's horse, emerged from the mines in a grand fashion. Accompanied by an orchestra, Ruby, adorned with a flower wreath, was brought out of the darkness, symbolizing the conclusion of the era of mining horses and their connogon partners. To commemorate their shared labor underground, a sculptural composition named "Conogon" was erected within the Museum-Reserve "Red Hill".

Via @mckennavongunten - :: I remember facing the large crowd from the makeshift stage the community had built for us. My eyes scanned the solemn glares and landed on a weathered face sitting amongst a group of women in brightly colored sari’s. Though years of toil and hardships had marked her face, her smile radiated from under the hood of her blue sari and her eyes glistened with barely visible tears as she listened to the speaker on stage. When I left the stage to start the feet washing, she made her way up to me and sat down in the chair in front of me. As I washed her feet she spoke to me in low mumbles while stroking my hair with her hand. When I finished, she stood up to give me a hug as silent tears of joy and acceptance ran down her cheeks. Then her face lit up as she smiled and said “Dhanyavaad” [which means thank you in Hindi] over and over again while holding my hands in her grasp. :: ======================== I’ve traveled around the world for five years and I’ll never forget her smile. Poor sweet souls trapped in a life of slavery. Made to carry heavy loads in the sweltering heat and whipped multiple times daily. Dacia Anderson is a dedicated volunteer at both the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society and Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare. But after a recent incident, she's been asked to take a step back from her work. "I felt disgusted, I felt horrified, I felt like if this was okay then what's not okay," said Anderson. On May 10, she saw a dog had given birth to a puppy at the animal shelter. She then alerted staff members to get the dog a whelping box. “thought everything was handled and a little while later I came back in and I had been in the building back and forth all day and was met with resistance at the door," said Anderson. "That's when I noticed they were collecting the mother from the kennel.""She had been euthanized while in labor," said Anderson. "Not before, not after, but during." This is inhumane and the shelter should be held accountable. This dog was in labor for heaven sake and shedoesn’t look aggressive, her photo looks like a toddler looking up at her mother for comfort, just innocent. Say she was aggressive, it could of been due to her about to give birth, pregnancy isn’t easy, she could of been mistreated her whole life only God knows.
