Custom Toonami Block Week 166 Rundown

Spy X Family: It’s finale-ish time for the Cruise Ship arc and Yor got through her boss rush and just has to beat Manbun Samurai while Loid finds out the informant guy planted bombs on the ship and Anya has to run interference and give support to both without them knowing. She gives the other groups searching for bombs some of the intel she’s got and gets Yor her needle thing which completely by a fluke murders two people when she throws it so like… is Anya a murderer now? Anyway with her weapon in hand Yor’s able to take down manbun and Loid throws the last bomb overboard into the informant and the Beryl Gut-looking guy because half of these guys need to be taken out by coincidences I guess. Like I get it’s a comedy but I don’t really like when it’s just ‘by complete fluke these guys are dead now’ like that old writing tip about coincidences that get you into trouble being drama and coincidences that get you out of it being cheating. Either way Yor sees off the mob boss wife and gets a baby hug and gets to spend the rest of the trip with her family so that’s cool, I’ve really enjoyed this arc being about Yor and I kinda enjoy her high-intensity stuff more than Loid’s espionage since he just beats the shit out of everyone no problem, Yor has to murder people with shonen fight tropes which is always fun.

Inuyasha: This is a big one, doing a double feature today to finish off the original run of Inuyasha and the last anime that was on this block when I started it almost four years ago. I mean TECHNICALLY speaking we still have The Final Act and that’s basically the same series but it is a different anime for licensing and such. The funny thing is both episodes give the same credits sequence of catching up with all the secondary characters and what they’re doing even though it only really makes sense for the second episode when everything’s over obviously. Anyway Goryomaru is training some kids to shoot demons at other demons and they killed Gakusanjin so the group can’t get any more Fuyoheki-sensing crystals so they group obviously think Naraku put him up to this to hide the BabyHeart …but it turns out kinda not? Like Naraku definitely has his hands in many stews with this place but it seems like the kids just show a demonic mountain at random. Meanwhile Goryomaru shoots Kagura in the chest which gives her a convenient excuse to have her tits out while talking to Sesshomaru and give his group the last Fuyoheki-sensing crystals. Goryomaru seems like an okay dude but does seem to get a touch of the bloodlust from his demon hand when Kagome brings out the jewel shard which she almost never does anyway and Naraku brings his jewel out too because it’s finale time I guess. Naraku’s basically onto Kagura’s shit at this point but is only giving her tasks she literally can’t fuck up and letting her lead Inuyasha’s group into traps while Hakudoshi kills Goryomaru for… reasons, I don’t remember this part very well. Kanna just kinda pops out of Goryomaru’s temple because shoving the baby into a place with a bunch of demonic corpses from Goryomaru’s child assassin gang camouflaged it somehow I guess and she just dips out and Kikyo runs into her and almost gets a chance to one-shot Naraku but Moryomaru stops her and stops this from being a real albeit anti-climactic finale (the fact that we have Goryomaru and Moryomaru running around at the same time also makes this part confusing) Naraku leads Inuyasha’s group into a stone demon’s belly he was using to store the demonic remains and is just like ‘haha now you’re in a demon’s belly’ and leaves them to die like a bond villain, like the dude literally can’t die and he’s still so afraid of actually fighting his enemies. Anyway this is all pretty standard stuff and random to have for a finale but the next part is something I remember people wondering about during the anime’s original run forever: why can’t Inuyasha just use the jewel shards? And the way they do this is actually pretty cool, Inuyasha slaps the one shard they have on the Tessaiga but it kinda instantly corrupts thanks to a combination of his own impurity and the stone demon’s own aura which essentially overrides Tessaiga’s natural protection against Inuyasha going full demon and has him going wild until Kagome gives him a cooldown hug to let him do a Super Adamant Barrage to bust them out. I kinda really like this because it makes sense on a mechanical and character development level. Like mechanically we’re basically using a loophole of the jewel shard being ‘in Kagome’s possession’ when she hugs Inuyasha and Inuyasha’s holding the jewel shard so technically she can purify it through him. But on a narrative level it shows that Inuyasha has grown and his trust in Kagome makes him stronger than the full demon he wanted to be at the start and stronger than everyone who underestimates him for being a half-demon thinks he is, it’s a really nice full circle moment that emphasizes that Inuyasha already has the strength he was looking for at the beginning of the series and it’s because he’s learned to trust in other people, so while it really is just a ‘Inuyasha foils a Naraku plot of the week’ episode it is a really good moment to end the original run on retrospectively.

That being said I remember this happening all the time as a kid like before I could use the internet real well you’d just get these random episodes that ended the arc and then in the last two minutes they had the characters running off into the sunset with a ‘the adventure continues’ vibe which ironically always meant the series was over, Teen Titans did it, Xiaolin Showdown did it, you just never knew when you were gonna get smacked in the face with a series finale back then because narrative threads were wild like there’s so much unexplained shit about the Moryomaru arc here and it’s just like ‘nope, show’s over, see you when they end the manga’ and we didn’t know we were gonna get a Brotherhood because that wasn’t a thing yet, like sometimes anime that outstripped the manga just dropped off the face of the earth never to be seen again like we’re lucky Inuyasha and FMA and Bleach all get their conclusions animated like that.

Yu Yu Hakusho: It’s time for another finale and I do like it when shows give a full episode epilogue at the end like it can feel so rushed to be like ‘okay fight’s over, here’s ten minutes to wrap shit up’. Kurama and Kuwabara have been keeping in touch and Kuwabara’s marginally more mature now and Keiko’s really cute now and they’re all headed to Genkai’s place for a big announcement. On the way Kurama spills the deets about the new Demon World agreement and it’s… weird. There’s no more barrier and the whole demon world is on the honor system now with the resources that went towards the three kings arms race now going to patrol efforts to keep humans from wandering into demon world and vice versa but like… why? We never do get any resolution on the ‘demons literally need to eat humans to live so how the fuck can they do it and not die’ deal and the barrier came down to… what, help Kurama visit  Kuwabara? I’m glad that’s a thing but this opens way too many plot holes like what about all the non-sentient demons that have no concept of ‘don’t fuck with humans’ and can’t swear to not do it and like what happens the next time some angsty human wants to flood the world with demons like do they have the manpower to stop that? Also what happens in three years when demon world gets a new king that may or may not be as favorable towards humans and now there’s no barrier to protect them? Like given Genkai called the group to ask them to make her home a reservation for demon-human interaction I get the feeling it’s supposed to infer that demons are on the slow track to being redeemed but this isn’t exactly a Prince Zuko redemption arc for the whole species like we’re not there yet a lot of demons don’t even like the new administration and can and will punch holes in it given the chance. It’s just kind of a thing where they go ‘oh it’s the end guys, everything’ll be okay, trust us’ like Kuwabara mentions that now that there’s a truce all the stuff Sakyo and Sensui wanted is over and THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED, the whole point is demons are bloodthirsty maniacs at worst and people that physically need to eat people at best so keeping them separate was probably for the best and we’re just gonna throw that away for a forced Kumbaya ending. Still the individual character endings are nice even though we imply Mukuro’s weaker now that she’s not pissed off all the time which is like not how these shonen emotional powerups usually go but okay. Even Yusuke gets to pop in for the last couple minutes and the group’s all together so that’s a nice ending even if the actual mechanics of the finale’s worldbuilding don’t make any god damn sense.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Now that Gojo’s been sealed he’s basically doing the Cursed Energy equivalent of going limp and being dead weight to make him really hard to carry which is really funny because I’m just picturing Kenjaku and the guys trying to drag him up the stairs and he’s just sitting there whining and dragging his feet. Mechamaru uses his post-death Nen thing (Cursed Energy really is a lot like Nen the more I think about it) to contact Yuji since the new guy is the least likely to be the one involved in a decades long conspiracy. And in true shonen protagonist beautiful simplicity since all the phones don’t work and all their middle managers are getting stabbed by the hand guy, he just runs up a building and starts screaming the battle plan to the whole city. Luckily this actually works given you’d think the city would be full of screams and explosions with transfigured humans everywhere but I guess it hasn’t gotten that noisy yet. Kento leaves Ino in charge of Megumi and Yuji and he explains why the world’s basically hanging on by a thread if Gojo gets sealed, basically the All Might effect from MHA in that everything being bound to one dude as a symbol of peace kinda fucks shit up cause all hell will break loose as soon as he cracks and also Gojo took it upon himself to politically shelter dozens of otherwise cursed people and that’ll cause political upheaval if it’s free game on that shit while Cursed Spirits are all like ‘Gojo’s asleep post nudes’ so yeah, hope Gojo doesn’t get cut in half or anything in a later arc but for right now it’s barrier smashing time and time to start the Shibuya arc fights in earnest.

Zom 100: Not quite finale time over here but we’re getting close, this episode’s all about setting up Kencho, Shizuka and Beatrix against the mid-bosses of Higurashi’s crew and they’re like… just the worst. Like this show doesn’t exactly do subtlety well, like it’s kinda like in One Piece how if they want you to hate someone they’ll make them a funny-looking racist that smokes cigars made of million dollar bills by lighting them off flaming puppies and it’s effective but it’s also really not good for making actual characters and more for just setting up the secondary characters’ ‘I’ve known you for like two minutes and here’s why everything you believe in is wrong’ speech which all basically boil down to ‘don’t be a selfish dick’. Kencho gets to dive head first into shit and give an ‘all women are queens’ speech, Shizuka defeats the fat guy with the power of graphs and the elderly and Beatrix uses the power of cultural relativism to beat the uptight lady, I think the fat guy may have survived though, didn’t see him die but Bea and Kencho are pretty cavalier about ‘oh yeah just watched a human die, oh well’ in a show where the zombie apocalypse hasn’t completely reached the level of devaluation of human life yet. Also Akira’s dad is getting ready to sacrifice himself to save Akira and the random group of girls that came to town but Higurashi interrupts this narrative sacrifice to try and get Akira to make a different narrative sacrifice by literally getting himself killed to repay his parents, kind of on the nose way to put a point on the ‘The best repayment is living well’ moral of this arc but I’ll admit it’s an interesting way to do it because I doubt they’ll just have Akira sit there and let his dad get eaten to prove a point about parenthood but the moral’s still there.   

Vinland Saga: Einar and Thorfinn finally chop down the last tree on their lot and think about what they want to do with their freedom since it’ll happen in the next year or so and Thorfinn’s just like ‘idk, might go back to Iceland, might rid the world of war and slavery, haven’t decided yet’ and that’s exactly as hilariously out of nowhere as it sounds. Meanwhile Ketil shows up and is like ‘oh btw boys as long as nothing life-changing happens to me or my son on this fateful trip I’m taking you guys are free in like two months’ so you can probably guess where that’ll be going. Meanwhile Canute is returning home to Denmark because turns out his brother became King of Denmark and he’s just King of England and Canute’s got a touch of the Light Yagami brain going on and has poisoned his brother and is now seeing hallucinations of his father’s severed head rolling around and saying how proud he is of him being a real cutthroat and not doing that namby pamby cooperation with his brother shit. So yeah while Thorfinn’s literally coming up out of the pits of hell Canute may be going crazy a bit which is a shame because I really liked Daddy Canute and I’m not looking forward to this story becoming The Madness of King Canute.
