Pop Culture References in Osomatsu-san: “Backwards Boyfriend face”

I want to take a moment to talk about this line of official merch Osomatsu-san put out because it involves a neat little bit of Japanese pop culture I hadn’t heard of before. The theme of the merch is「後方彼氏面」which roughly translated means "Backward Boyfriend Face"

The term "Backward Boyfriend Face" refers to male fans of female idols who go to standing live concerts and stand in the back of the venue, or on the second floor looking down from above. They’re typically guys who’ve support the idols for a long time, maybe since their debut.

Now, keep in mind that the term is NOT meant to be positive. The idea is that they're trying to act like they have some sort of personal relationship with the idols (That's why the word "boyfriend" is in there) by being all cool and nonchalant and "not like other fans".

Except they ARE just like other fans and by trying to pretend that they aren't they end up coming off as even more desperate and weird than the dudes up front with the glowsticks.

Basically, Osomatsu-san made a whole line of merchandise themed around calling the main characters a pack of thirsty concert creeps. Which, if we're being honest, really does describe them perfectly.
