Consider: Arthur keeping his word about making peace with the Druids (*side-eyes BBC*) and the next time they come across one of those small shrines, he's a lil uncomfy still but is doing his best like, "what's this one for? Should we go around or...?" Because this one isn't as subtly creepy as the last one, there are no "def haunted" vibes, it's just a kind of rough cairn of stacked stone and branches, and it's got flowers all over it, candle stubs and incense sticks, little jars of honeycomb, sweetmeats, preserves, etc.

And it's Percival (hc he was raised in a Druid camp, even if he doesn't have magic) is like, "No, it's fine, this one is for Emrys."

Cue Arthur asking about Emrys, and Percival explaining he's supposedly the living son of the Triple Goddess, born to heal the wounds of the Old Religion (he's tactful enough to not mention who made those wounds *coughcough*kingcunt*cough*) and the offerings are made to show kindness and peace, and to aid him in his duty (sure enough, those flowers and herbs are all medicinal).

"Why's it so important to keep him happy?" It's Gwaine who asks, irreverent and curious.

And Percival tells them the story of the High Priestess Nimueh, who tried to turn her power against Emrys's through the magic of life and death. So Emrys created a great storm over the Isle of the Blessed and called down the wrath of rain and lightning to unmake her.

They're all so absorbed in storytelling that nobody notices Merlin sitting off to the side and sweating like a hooker talking to a beat cop.

Bonus points if Merlin sneaks over to take some of the offerings, against his better judgement bc he should not be encouraging this but he's got a killer sweet tooth and nobody in Camelot can make decent sweetmeats, apparently, and some of these herbs are pretty rare.

Double bonus if Percival or Elyan sees him do it and are like, "bro you gon be so cursed," and Merlin doesn't know how to explain that no he's not sacrilegious, these are for him, they're offerings, they were offered, and not entirely realising he's being paid the magical equivalent of ye olde protection racket.

*also side-eyes bbc* yeah...this would have been awesome to have...excuse me while i go sharpen my knives, completely unrelated to this ask i assure you

Went to an event called Queer Awakenings which was a panel discussing the films that made people feel seen and was the realisation that they were queer. It opened up to the audience and I got to talk about The Captain and how I related to the way his story was about self acceptance and feeling comfortable in your own skin. I genuinely did not fully understand the concept of a Comfort Character til I saw Cap.

We're very different in many ways but the thing that resonated with me the most was the fact he never explicitly Comes Out™. That's not the point of his story. Everyone can clearly see he's a gay man. It's the fact that the Captain learns that it's okay to be gay. He learns that he doesn't have to hide that part of himself (anymore).

We both have being a gay man in common. But that's not what stuck with me personally. I've never liked the idea of sitting down and "having a talk" and coming out (specifically as trans). It just sounds excruciating and Cring™ and "why should I have to explain myself" blah blah blah. I remember when I finally came out to my parents and told them my name I somehow felt stupid for choosing it. AAAAAAA.

ANYWAYS, even before I had the words for Trans I knew something was up. But when I finally discovered the word I immediately went "no that's not me. I just find having a chest annoying that's all" (which some cis AFAB people might and fair enough but that wasn't the case for me). It took me YEARS to accept that I was in fact trans like how it took the Captain YEARS to accept the fact he was gay.

It's that slow realisation that it's okay to be who you are. Deep down we both knew what was always there. But being able to tell ourselves that it's okay and safe and all that shit was the tough part. And seeing the Captain have that same struggle (in a different but still queer way) was absolutely groundbreaking for me. A lotta the queer stories I'd seen up until that point were focused on Coming Out™ and people being unaccepting. Ghosts was probably the first time I'd seen someone struggle with Accepting Themselves.

OTP challenge - day 12

12: having a lazy day

John had to hold back to not hop out of his class. Finally summer break! He still had to write a paper and he would only get results on the last exams in the next two weeks but for now he didn’t care. He was gonna do exactly… nothing for the rest of the day. A grin spread across his face as he thought that. Well, he would probably listen to music, read a book or watch a movie at night but... nothing that involves brainwork! He couldn’t believe he was done with his first year of his doctorate. He had done it! The first year was always hard and he knew that before, but this hard?! University made the first years most challenging so they could pick out the toughest students. John Watson was proud to say that he was ONE of those.

With a smile dancing on his lips he walked out the university building. He had originally planned to head back to his tiny apartment right away, but now that he was outside, the campus seemed surprisingly inviting. He decided to stay here for a while. He found himself a tree to sit down underneath. Then he pulled out his headphones and put his favorite rock playlist on. With a content feeling starting to spread inside of him he laid down on his backpack. This day was gonna be great!

'Sweet child o’mine' by Guns n’ Roses had just started playing when somebody suddenly stood in front of him, blocking the sun.

“…tson, right?”, he heard somebody asking. Reluctantly and a bit annoyed John took off his headphones. “Sorry?”

“You’re John Watson, right?”, a boy asked him. John didn’t see any of him, since he was standing against the sun. He only saw his silhouette: tall, slim, locks. The sun gave him something like a halo.

“Uh, yeah? Why are you asking..?”

“You left your notebook in room 404.”, the young man held it out to him. Hesitantly John stood up and took it.

“How did you know it’s mine? And how do you know me?”, John asked. His name (stupidly) wasn’t written on the notebook and- hell, he’d remember that face for sure.

The young man spluttered but looked to the side: “Come on, every body knows that new rugby player who, for once, doesn’t fucking suck.”

John frowned. “They do?”

The young man just shrugged, still avoiding eye contact.

“And how did you know this was mine?”, John held up the notebook.

The other man finally looked at him with a hint of a smile. “I deduced it.”, he simply said, then he turned around to walk away.

It took John a moment to recover. That guy’s face was- fuck. Those eyes and that almost-smile? My lazy day is gonna involve him, John thought and turned around towards the direction where the boy has disappeared.

“Wait!”, he yelled, waving his notebook in the air and started running - forgetting his backpack, phone and headphones on the ground.

He caught up to the guy. He needed a second to catch his breath (which was not only because of the running) and finally looked into the guy’s eyes.

John scratched the back of his neck. “Do you wanna- would you like to have a lazy day with me?”

The guy just stared down at him. Then John almost facepalmed ‘have a lazy day with him’??? What the actual fuck?!

“You know, this semester was really stressful and I planned on just having the laziest day in the history of lazy days, because I didn’t have a lazy day since what? Three? Four? Months? And I would still like to have a lazy day… but maybe with you? Not that it would be boring. With you I mean. Boring doesn’t equal lazy. Oh my god, how often did I just say lazy? Quite often I think. Too often probably. Am I talking too much? I am talking too much. My god, I am so sorry…”

The boy finally opened his mouth, then he looked away while clearing his throat. Finally he opened his mouth: “I… don’t really do lazy days.”

“Oh.”, John said. He doesn’t wanna hang out with you, Watson. You’re being a mess and obvious and now he doesn’t wanna hang out with you. Well done. “Then… I guess… never mind. I’ll just- you know- okay have a lazy day! Good day! Good day, I mean. Damnit.” John turned around and tried to flee from this very awkward situation.

“But I- wait! John!”, the man had grabbed John’s arm. “I- spending the day with you sounds great.”, he said.

“Oh- really? Are you sure? You don’t have to if you don’t wanna. Obviously. No pressure, of course-“

The young man chuckled softly. John immediately stopped talking. “Why are you laughing?”

“I just thought-”, the mysterious man walked backwards towards John’s stuff, facing him. “-John H. Watson, doctor to be and future rugby-captain, wouldn’t be that flustered by asking a boy out.”

“I didn’t- I didn’t ask you out! I just wanted to spend a lazy day with you!”

“Uh-huh. Sounds like a very bisexual thing to say to me.”, the young man smirked, and turned around walking just a step in front of John.

“Woah… I am not- What do you mean by- Jesus Christ! How could you POSSIBLY know that!”

“I deduced it.”, the man said, looked back and John saw that this (decisively too good-looking) smirk has never left those (decisively too inviting) lips.

“What does that even mean? And can you not spread out all my secrets while I don’t even know your freaking name, please?!”

“The name is Sherlock Holmes. Do catch up, hm? I know a good Italian place where we could-”

“Sherlock Hol- yeah, hold on one second.”, John stopped walking and pulled Sherlock back by his hand. “It’s my lazy day. You are just bonus material. I’m gonna decide where we are going.”

Sherlock raised his eyebrows. “Did you just call me bonus material?”

“Yes, I did.”

Sherlock playfully gasped: “How dare you.”

John smirked. “I am a sass king. I kinda do things like that.”, now it was his turn to turn around and walk off.

Sherlock snorted: “Yeah, unless you’re asking boys out.”, he called out.

“Shut up and come already, will you?”, John replied.

Sherlock caught up with John, then they walked off the university campus to spend a lazy day together. And it was gonna be the best lazy day in the history of lazy days, John thought.

Connected to my last ask but I wanted to separate bc it's a whole new issue

But, like you mentioned Arthur being a captain by 15, and the Druid raid we all know went so wrong, that he still blames himself for (yet the writers didn't follow through, AGAIN) and that had me wonder if he actually was to blame.

Like, he said he lost control of his men, but....I don't think that would happen. These would have been trained knights, probably all older than him, more experienced....and more loyal to Uther. They would know better than to disobey their Prince, bc that risks being punished by the King.

Unless they knew they wouldn't be in trouble.

I think that raid was a test, Uther seeing just how obedient his son was, if he was too "soft" on what he decided was the enemy. And if he was, he told the knights they were to finish the job themselves against Arthur's command, bc the only order that trumps Arthur's, is Uther's.

MHM MHM MHM BECAUSE YEAH

arthur was still a teenageer, he was at the age where most are still considered squires (at least...i think so?) but obviously he went up the ranks faster because he's the prince. he was still finding his footing with his role as prince and heir to the throne. he was probably still holding on to this naivete about kingship that uther wanted to squash out of him.

arthur probably hasn't seen much of the purge other than trials and executions of alleged guilty sorcerers (which he probably believed to be fair trials). he has not yet seen the true disregard of empathy his father and the kingdom has towards magic users.

i am a firm believer that that raid arthur led was a test. and a test he almost passed because he told his men to "spare the women and children" but it is highly likely that uther had a contingency plan if arthur's raid didn't eradicate all of the druids from that settlement.

now, look at the episode's transcript (s4 ep10), arthur is immediately disturbed when he realizes where they are and when merlin explains the shrine to the knights as something built "to appease restless spirits" in an area.

[Arthur seems slightly disturbed as he looks at a red flag picking up in the breeze.]

and even later he seems so out of it

[Arthur stares into space has he absentmindedly unbuckles his bracers.]

it's like he, himself, is haunted by the memory. a memory he probably made himself forget because of how horrible it was. he's had this old memory locked away so tight but now that its back, now that arthur remembers, he can't help but go through the what ifs, and berate himself for not being experienced enough to stop his men.

gaius calls uther's raids "relentless", not even considering arthur himself in that description. this could be either because gaius is too used to uther's persecution that he assumes any magical persecution is uther or gaius knew (or had some semblance to know) that uther was the true one at fault for arthur's raid.

but back to arthur

KING ARTHUR (begins to cry) I am responsible for what happened to you. And for all the violence that happened here. When I led the attack on your camp, I was young and inexperienced. I was desperate to prove myself to my men, to my...father. KING ARTHUR (still crying) I told the men to spare the women and children, but I know that some of them ignored the order. And there was so much happening. I wanted to stop it...I froze. I didn't know what to do. KING ARTHUR (completely breaking down) I can still hear the screams. I cannot right this wrong. Nothing I can ever do will change the horrors that happened that day. But I can promise that, now that I am king, I will do everything that I can to prevent anything like this ever happening again. From this day forth, the Druid people will be treated with the respect they deserve. I give you my word.

uther how fucking dare you traumatize my boy like this

arthur can still hear the fucking screams....like shit.....that sound is burned into his memory, the blood, the smell of rot and possibly fire, everything about that day how he thought himself ready but froze when things began to go wrong.

did he think himself a coward when the day came to night after the raid? did he struggle to even put on the pendragon cape? did older knights creep behind him and try to remind him that this was his father's mission? did they speak to him with false sympathy as they told him that this was all for the good and safety of camelot?

so yeah that raid was something uther placed into the hands of an inexperienced child (reminder that he only turned 20/21 in s1 so he definitely led the raid in his teens) as a way to see if arthur would do what it took to prove himself worthy for his father.

#on a side note: reading the transcript for s4 ep10 i got the chance to find some super cute elyaine and i'm so soft for them omfg #also realized this episode is just after arthur banishes gwen for her 'affair' so like imagine you're elyan #you are having the worst week of your life: you sister has been banished; your once dead friend betrayed arthur and is dead again; and now #you are possessed by a dead druid kid who is forcing you to kill your king/friend #poor baby he deserves all the hot cocoa #so does arthur #actually they should have a sleepover where the two build a pillowfort and just be there for each other #and if anyone wants to talk about arthur's agency in this sure but he was a literal child who only knew the prejudices taught to him #do not place all the blame on his for that #if you wanna talk about arthur's actual kingship yeah i'll bite #bbc merlin #arthur pendragon #anti uther #we do not stan that man in this household #merlin meta #s4 ep10 #4.10 #A Herald of a New Age

Me noticing that Nicholas Briggs is one of the executive producers & script editors for the entire new Second Doctor series Big Finish just started, as well as a director and co-writer on its first boxset: Yeah I mean that’s kinda a lot but I guess it’s to be expected, he’s like the head of the company and apparently Two’s his favorite Doctor?

Me noticing that the other script editor & co-writer, and lead producer is the same guy who wrote That Which Went Away: Oh okay now you have my attention

#second doctor era #big finish #i registered this information by noticing that i had felt my eyes widen #literally reacted before processing it that's almost kinda scary #now i dont wanna get my hopes up #but that very gay short trip is literally all we've seen so far of him writing two and jamie together #since jamie's not in this boxset #(which i've only heard a little of so far)#and let's face it we've seen 6b start before we kinda vaguely knew what to expect from this first beyond the war games set #what was always gonna be more interesting was the one question canon never has addressed - how jamie winds up with him again #they've been plenty happy to put them together but so far nobody's dared write that scene in officially published media #or even as far as i know allude to how it happened #but if this man is writing that in the next one...#god im putting the clown shoes on aren't i?#damnit i usually manage not to get my hopes up like this #i mean it's not even like i'd be hoping for anything specific really #/i/ know they're married and so do the rest of you and that's all that matters #im hardly sitting around waiting for the bbc stamp of approval #but i do sometimes wish 60s characters were given just a titch more space to be emotional in the stuff they have coming out now #bc they talk a lot about how the 60s weren't especially character driven but then they act like the only way to do that #is by making plots revolve tightly around characters #and im not complaining about that either but i do feel it ignores the rather simpler fix of just focusing on their feelings more #and still writing plots that feel of the era #it just seems like a happy medium for the things they talk about wanting to achieve in audio/writing 60s characters in the 2020s #but...hmm..#the author of that which went away is maybe one of the only people that COULD make me think a genuinely emotional reunion is on the table #so clown shoes it is then #talk to me in a year and see where that's gotten me i guess #this is one of those right-at-the-tag-limit posts isn't it?#go figure
