"She was always there for me, it didn't matter that she couldn't understand what I was saying sometimes, she'd always answer the phone and listen to me complaining about my life."

Jimin's self-esteem was shot. Since he began high school, he had a problem with confidence and you had no idea where it came from. His parents and brother were always so supportive of him and praised him so much. Yet, there he was, texting you while you were trying to sleep because he'd made a small error in his practise and considered it to be the worst mistake he'd ever made in his life. There was no lie in your message, you were so proud of him when he sent you that video of him dancing to a Korean song you didn't know. You'd hoped that you could settle some of his worries. But that was evidently not the case when he asked to call you.
Chatting to Jimin on Skype was a regular occurrence, despite not being able to fully understand one another yet. You, since starting secondary school, had begun to learn Korean as an extra-curricular activity, and so every now and then you could pick up what he was saying. But you couldn't hold a conversation with him. So when he video-called you, and you were face-to-face, you didn't understand what he was telling you but it still felt right.
This morning was one of those times where he would call you just to rant at you. He was in the bathroom of his school, his chubby cheeks that he retained from childhood stained with his tears. His plump, bottom lip trembled as he weakly spoke to you, unloaded all his worries onto you and shared the weight of his burden. All you could really offer him were coos of the pet name you gave him and telling him that he was much better than he thought he was.
"Please, Jiminie, don't cry." You begged him in a whisper as you were too afraid to let your parents hear you awake at this time of the morning. "You're an amazing dancer, truly! I'm not just saying that to blow smoke up your arse, either. Anyone would be lucky to work with you, or watch you perform! You made one mistake, you're allowed to do that."
Jimin nodded, as if he was taking in everything you were saying. He couldn't lie, the soft tone in which you were speaking soothed him. He stopped crying when he heard your reassurance. He wiped his tears away and swallowed. "Thank you." He said in English.
In broken Korean, you thanked him for leaning on you.
"What time?" He asked.
"Oh, um, 3:20."
"Morning?"
"Yeah."
"Oh. You sleep."
In Korean you told him that you would, but only when you were sure he was happy again.
He laughed at your mispronunciation and your broken speech. Jimin was your best friend... really your only true friend. Sure there were people at school you hung around with, but you were sure you'd never see them again when you all went your separate ways. But you were learning a whole other language for Jimin. He must have been special to you.
He finally called it quits around 4:00am, practically forcing you to sleep. He blew you a kiss goodbye, as he usually did when you hung up, and let you get back to sleep. If he could have tucked you in, he would have.
Two mornings later, you received another call from Jimin, this time he was in a completely different mood. You were sat enjoying your breakfast when you received the call, something that made Jimin laugh. You would often have, what he called breakfast-dinner dates, because you'd just start your day when he called you about to end his. You couldn't make out a lot of the words he was saying, but you did hear "teacher", "good" and "grades", so you were assuming his recital was today and that he did really well. He certainly sounded like he did at least. He was rolling around on his bed like a mad man and was practically screaming at you. Your parents, who were also in the room and listening to him, were also chuckling to themselves. They understood nothing in comparison to you, so all they heard was a small Korean boy shouting at the top of his lungs. His happiness was contagious, though, and the rest of your day was spent with a smile on your face despite the people who went out of their way to purposefully attempt to upset you.
But it worked both ways, Jimin would call you to share news and you would call him to share news. He saw you crying more often than your own family did, and would always do something anything to make you smile again. He hated it when you were upset. He hated it more because he wasn't there to physically hold you, and gently rock you, and kiss you on the top of the head. He couldn't reassure you that everything would be okay like he would normally have done.
You began learning Korean at age 11, and by 13 you were pretty much fluent in the language, making Jimin's need to learn English almost obsolete. Jimin, out of everyone you knew, was the most proud of you. He'd refer to you as his bilingual bestie, and would often call you in the middle of lunchtimes at his school so he could brag to his friends about how you'd learnt his language in two years.
According to you, it was just a normal day in July. You woke up at seven o'clock, got yourself ready for school and made your way downstairs to your dining room where your dad had left you some breakfast on the table. Your mum was usually sat at the dining table enjoying her breakfast and reading through the day's news, your dad would come into the dining room after you with a hot drink for himself and your mum. Your life consisted of a blissful routine, except for that day.
Both your parents were sitting at the dining table, their breakfast hardly touched and massive smiles on their faces. Knowing grins and mischievous glints in their eyes which immediately gave away that they were up to something. You suspiciously went about your routine, commenting on how weird they were being. "Weird?" Your dad questioned. "Who's being weird? I'm not being weird. Are you being weird, my dear?"
"No, darling." Your mum responded. "I'm not being weird. Why would she think we're being weird? We aren't the weird ones here."
"No of course not."
You began preparing your breakfast and started tucking in, when you heard your mother tut. "What?" You asked, defensively yet playfully. "Can't I enjoy my breakfast in peace without my parents acting strange?"
"Do you want to know what's strange, honey-bumpkin?" Your mum asked your dad.
Your dad shook his head. "Honey-bumpkin?"
"It was the first thing that came to my head, alright? Go with it."
Your dad rolled his eyes. "What, poochie-pie?"
"Poochie-pie, really?"
"Well you called me honey-bumpkin."
"I feel like there's a point to this charade, guys." You piped up. "Anyone going to share it?"
"Right." Your dad shook his head again, this time symbolising that he was shaking away the previous seriousness to return to his playful banter with his wife. "What do you find strange, my beautiful wife?"
"Aw." Your mum cooed. "I find it strange how our little ___, who is usually so perceptive and smart, hasn't noticed that her plate is a little wobbly while she's been trying to eat."
"Really? She hasn't noticed the whopping great envelope under her food?"
"No she hasn't."
You saw it after they pointed it out to you. Your confusion was clearly etched on your face as you moved your plate out of the way to reveal a large envelope addressed to you. It was in Jimin's handwriting. Since you'd both entered the world of the Internet and discovered instant messaging, the letters became few and far between. The last time you saw his handwriting, it was messy and childish. But the lettering on the envelope was small, but neat. He'd improved a great deal. You turned it over to reveal a small, cute sticker keeping the envelope shut. It was a bright pink heart cartoon sticker that would be almost garish if it didn't come from Jimin. You, gently, in order to spare Jimin's feelings, peeled open the envelope to reveal a short handwritten letter from him.
"Read it out loud!" Your mum exclaimed, her excitement too strong to hide.
"In English!" Your dad interrupted, knowing your sense of humour would have made you begin to read it in Korean. You chuckled at how well your family knew you.
You cleared your throat and began to read:
To my bilingual bestie,
It's your boy, Chim-Chim here! It's been a while since we've done this, huh? I think the last letter I sent you was wishing you a Merry Christmas. Or was it a Happy New Year? I don't remember, I've slept since then.
I just wanted to let you know how proud we all are of you. You're doing so well in school, and now you're fluent in a whole other language. You continue to amaze me even now! I think you've even amazed your parents, too.
But my family and yours were talking and we thought it was a bit strange how you were fluent in the language of a country you've never visited before. Usually people visit the country then learn the language, but you've done things backwards. So, this needs to be rectified as soon as possible.
I hope you haven't made any plans for the summer break, because you're going to be spending it in Korea with me! SURPRISE! You have no IDEA how hard it's been for me to keep this from you.
Your mum and dad can't unfortunately get the time off work, but they've made us promise we'll pick you up from the airport and drop you off again when you go home. But I don't think I'll want to let you go home. I think I'll steal you and hide you somewhere where no one can find you, and then sneak you cakes and biscuits when nobody's looking. Yes. Let's do that!
Anyway, I'll see you in (at the time of writing this) 10 days, 12 hours, 30 minutes and 25 seconds. 24... 23... 22... 21... oh I'm so excited! Your arrival at Incheon can't come quick enough.
All my love,
Chim-Chim!
Xxxx
As soon as you looked up from your letter, your parents screamed at you. They ran over to you and wrapped their arms around you, still screaming at full pitch in your ear as you began to cry happy tears. You were going to finally meet your best friend in the whole world, and it was all down to the people you loved the most.

[BIO STORY]
[Day 1] it was a good day back from a meeting with Janet. Got a lot done.
[Day 2] volunteer kersch was given small jobs around the shop. To see if she has potential of working in the shop. It may be head offices job to get staff working here. But I'm the one that has to put up with no effort. So i want effort.. Overall good day.
[Day 3] viki another volunteer was given small jobs to start off. Late start due to being out most of the day.
[Day 4] late getting back due to being out. Shop wasn't open today. Hopefully longer day in the shop tomorrow. Getting those figures up is what i want to see.
[Day 5] great day today got a lot done today. Happy with everything. Doing a donation event tomorrow. Giving little tasks to the volunteers to see potential.
[Day 6] the 5 pound donation went as cording as plan. Happy with the figures. They're looking better as the days go one. Great day.
[Day 7] longer day at work today. Good figures. Decided to do a bootsale event at the centre. All went as planned. Chose volunteer kersch as assistant manager. Because of her care in work.
[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]
the week is done. Now onto the big reveal. Got some people coming in. As we will start filming our journey.
[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]
[Day 1] new member Edward will be filming the entire process of this. The figured were high today due to little tricks or two. Got a lot done today. Shit night but that's expected. As it has happened before.. Wondering how far we'll get with this. Excites me everyday because that middle point is where it'll all take off. I'm looking forward to that. Introduced the girls to the new member. They're very excited to be going through this with me. Overall good day.
[Day 2] lovely lady got a makeover today. Volunteer vera needs to sort her shit out because it's getting me down. Her behaviour is terrible. Figures are good in the last few days working in the shop. Got the poster done last night. Happy i got it done. Let's hope tomorrow is just as good.
[Day 3] been a really low day. Personal reasons only. Figures are still good. I went over the refurb with Edward and staff. I gave them a chance to decide how the refurb should look like in they're open ideas.. Obviously mine was to everyone's taste. Let's hope all goes great when Janet gets here. We win the refurb and everything will be just great. We need this. Got involved with a pop video. Madalliecat363 was the lady who put the song together. Viki music player. And of course being the best of everything i was the dancer. Edward will have recorded everything so it'll be uploaded to tiktok tonight.
[Day 4] really long dull day. Not happy about the figures today. Laziness with the staff is annoying me big time. Joe came in with his wifes bits and bobs. Sorry to give him bad news but that's just how it is around here. It's not a royal laydeh. Bernie was making excuses to have mable stay at home. I haven't had her back at work for a while now. This can't go on! Not feeling the vibe... At all.
[Day 5] day off took today off filming.. Needed a day to sort stuff out. Got the customer to fill out a survey on they're experience in the shop. I think everything went well. Got a good feeling today. Had to send vera home as her lack of effort was annoying and getting in the way of a successful day. Figures were great tonight. Keeping things going.
[Day 6] today was a short day due to being out.. Hopefully a longer day tomorrow to figure out the challenge tomorrow. Its gonna be a good day. Can't believe I'm nearly at the half way point with this. Successful day even though we were out most of the day.
[Day 7] rot test challenge was done perfectly. Good vibes today. Out with my sister tonight overall a great day. Figures are still good. Let's keep this going.
[Day 8] its been a short day today and because of that the figures are crap today. Not happy with explaining to the staff the lack of effort Vera and viki is putting in. Not happy at all. Antique hunt is tomorrow. Got a lot of other work done today which lifts any day up. Let's keep this going.
[Day 9] Antique Hunt was great. Everything went to plan. Didn't make a lot which let me down. Because of the staffs stupidy at looking at a crapy map.. Annoyed at Vera trying to beat me at scores. I'm not having it! I'll have to play it back to show her who is boss!
[Day 10] got a lot done today. Figures are high today not bad at all. Didn't get round to doing this last night so I'm posting it tonight. Gloria was acting up again to bad she'll have to go.
[Day 11] got things a bit mixed up due to the un tidy back of the shop. Nothing was sorted the morning before by Mike. So I thought of a plan to side track kersch into thinking we were lazy workers. Not at all. We'll it backfired. Vicky handled it well. Great day overall.
[Day 12] went over some things around the shop. An okish day. No figures were made today I'm annoyed about that. Felt ganged up on today by staff. Not happy with the confusion of who's the manager around here. Didn't even need to say that again to the. An item had be vandalised. My guess by Vera since she has been saying shit about me. Trying to let me down. It's not going her way!
[Day 13] mables funeral is today. Its been a good day today. Not feeling great today. We keep going forward. Figures weren't counted up but that'll be sorted in the morning. Out all night. Rip mable
[Day 14] shop was closed today. Didn't make anything due to being out at the funeral
[Day 15] really low day not a lot got done today. In the middle of sorting other people's problems out. Which hasn't gone to plan. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
[Day 16] a lady came in for a refund that didn't happen to her using and getting things customers don't get. No books no coffees and certainly not out of our mugs! Got a phone call from Mrs stubs dealing with the loss of the items they brought it as they were gone. Got big things planned ahead. Night out wasn't as expected.
[Day 17] its been a great day today. Got a lot done and got plans coming up. I know they'll be successful. Golden bag came in with awesome clothes.
Closing the shop for 3 days
[Day 21] Went over some things with the staff. With Janet coming tomorrow everything had to be cleared and check on. Can't disappoint her otherwise. Head office can't complain.
[Day 22] head manager Janet came to the shop. Everything went well till she took me into the back. I'm not sure where we'll be going from here. But it doesn't look good at all.
[Day 23] its fashion time in it. Everything went as cordially to plan. Everything went great. Didn't get any money though :( staff were injured that's hardly my fault. I got told bad news on the phone. The store will be closing.
[Day 24] the last day. Vicky mcculre was in the shop going over her charity in the children's hospital. Nothing better then Christmas and this beauty. Any awesome day ended on a un forgettable moment. Which I will post that in the next post. It's been a long journey but we finally made it.
this is the last of the updates. And I'll see you soon x

Here’s the 4-11 on LA Life
So today I wanted to cover a topic that I feel very confident talking about. It’s called “Living In Los Angeles Full Time.” But before I get started, let me be real with you guys. I am completely aware of the fact that I have only a few more seconds to sell you on this post.
 How do I know this?
I write for a living. I get paid to communicate, and that’s all I’ve ever wanted. I take great pride in my work, but I don’t take work home with me. How do you know this about me? Because after work, I still text like this: “How r u doing 2 day? sry was @ work what r u up 2?” Why? Because that’s how I used to type in middle school, and it’s easy to fall back on. Maybe it’s who I am in a sense. And it allows me to not take myself too seriously for a bit. In other words, if this post has some grammatical errors, it’s because I’m off the clock.
So enough with the intro. I have 16,000 views on my blog. I know people read it. Let’s get right to the point. Right now, I am listening to house music by Robert Miles, folding clothes, and rebuffing my nails. My alarm is set for 7:32 AM, and I have an English muffin on standby for the morning. Shoot... does that mean I am officially ready to live in Santa Monica full time? Let’s find out.
Tumblr media
Everyone has their life story. My story started with where I came from. It’s a state that has been in the news a lot lately because of the heat wave. I’ll give you a hint: It rhymes with Merizona.
When I attended graduate school at USC last year (oh my gosh, I can NOT believe it’s only been a year since I lived in South Central-does that make me Cali basic)?! I always identified myself as “Alaina from Arizona.” But now that I’ve been living here awhile, I’ll say: “Alaina from Venice.” Or “Alaina from North Hollywood.” Or whatever I feel like saying, because the truth is-I’ve lived in a LOT of places in LA. But on Monday, I’m moving to Santa Monica for an ENTIRE YEAR. Because I have a great job, and I’m ready to see what it’s really like to be a full time LA resident. If you live here already and can relate, or if you are interested in moving here- Here’s what I know so far.
1.) Traffic is pretty bad
I’m not going to sugarcoat it. There are certain life adjustments that one needs to make in order to work with the LA freeways. If you’ve lived here long enough, you’re smart enough to know not to get on the 101 or 405 at 5 pm, no matter what direction you’re going. You know that traveling 20 miles will take roughly an hour and twenty minutes, and driving a minuscule five miles will take around twenty-five minutes. While embarking on this frusterating commute, you realize that most people are just as stressed as you are about timing, so they are not purposely slowing you down. It’s just a “traffic jam.” In other words-everyone has found the gold rush. Los Angeles is a beautiful place, a lot of people want to live here-and the freeways just aren’t quite built for the amount of people trying to drive.
Tumblr media
2.) Dating is not a nightmare
I have read numerous websites about single women complaining that they cannot meet somebody in LA because “everyone is a player,” and there is “too much competition.” I don’t agree. I think that dating is a mindset, and I firmly believe there are plenty of great men out there who are just looking for the right person. Don’t let LA intimidate you. Like Gretzky says, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. So say “hi” to someone at Runyon Canyon, maybe it will pay off!
Tumblr media
3.) The stereotypes are somewhat true
Now, just like any stereotype, I am in no way trying to say that every assumption applies to every person. I will say my own personal opinion, since I’ve lived in a lot of places here. 1.) I think that the Beverly Hills area is overrated. 2.) I believe that the Bel Air/Westwood area is extremely overrated (I went to USC, so I could be a bit biased on this category). 3.) The Valley is hotter than the areas located around the ocean, and can make your commute a LOT longer. But I’ve met some of the greatest people in the Valley. 4.) I personally like Venice, but it’s kind of true to its yoga/Whole Foods/hippie stereotype. Oh, and most people in Venice like the beach, own a dog, and like to frequent vegan cafes. Which, don’t get me wrong-is totally fine! I like the beach. I don’t own a dog, and I would maybe go to a vegan cafe-so since I’m only one for three, maybe I’m better off in Santa Monica.
Tumblr media
4.) Cher’s dad is wrong-not everywhere in LA takes twenty minutes
Remember that scene in Clueless when Cher lies to her dad and says she is on her way home? Her lawyer dad hollers at her: “SEE YOU IN TWENTY MINUTES-EVERYWHERE IN LA TAKES TWENTY MINUTES!” I get where the saying originated from-LA is LA, and the valley is the valley. But let’s be clear-It’s always a smart idea to give yourself more time if you are going ANYWHERE. Because in LA, “Sorry I got stuck in traffic” is a lame excuse. It’s like saying “Sorry, I was breathing.” So standard.
Tumblr media
5.) Be prepared to shell out more money in California
Compared to Arizona, and 90% of the US, things in California are just more expensive. You will pay more in taxes. You will shell out more dough for fuel. Food will be pricier. Stay away from clothing boutiques if you are on a budget. Certain gas stations will charge $1.50 more per gallon, so be wary of where you are getting gas from. Be aware of which grocery store you are shopping at. (Hint: Gelsons is much more expensive than Vons or Ralphs, Vons is more expensive than Ralphs-always go to Ralphs).
6.) Yes it’s a scary change at first
When I first moved to LA for graduate school, I cried every night for the first week, because it was SUCH a big change from the city I grew up in. You will not have people knocking on your door giving you banana bread. If you ask someone for directions, not everyone will help you. You will have a few cranky salespeople, a few professors that you don’t see eye to eye with-and even sadder still: friends who you grow apart from, and relationships that just don’t work out. But... isn’t that everywhere? What I have finally come to understand about Los Angeles is that you are not ENTITLED to anything when you move here. Just like the most popular person in school, you have to EARN their respect. Because LA has a lot of potential suiters-it doesn’t want to settle for the faint hearted.
Tumblr media
7.) But if you can pull through, the possibilities are endless
I moved to Los Angeles with a dream, just like everybody else did. My goal wasn’t necessarily to be to famous. I had no plans on becoming a singer, or a dancer, or an actress. I moved here for my education. I think that people who don’t understand think that going to USC is an easy thing. It’s really not. It’s not a safe area. The university has done a phenomenal job of keeping its students safe, but it was a huge shock to me. Academically, it’s EXTREMELY difficult. It took 100% of my focus, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And that brings me to my final comment about living in Los Angeles.
You can live on the coast, but you can never coast.
I made that saying up on the spot, and I rather like it. Maybe I’ll get it patented, because, #wheninLA.
But honestly-believe in yourself. have faith in God, lean on your family and friends, be grateful, and love every day that you’re in LA. If you have any questions, message me. #wheninLA
XOXO,
ALAINA
