Knowing from the bedroom scene script that Ava did stay out too late the night before just adds to the impact of this scene imo. When Ava says she’s tired, Beatrice says she can cut her hours at the bar. She doesn’t scold Ava for being out late. Instead she lets her vent and explain what she’s feeling.

Beatrice’s frustration only comes out later in this scene. The “you do what you want”. She’s been trying to let Ava live her own life too even though the reason for them being there is to train and probably feels like it’s also her fault they were compromised because of it.

There are five cracks in the ceiling of their bedroom, and at this point Beatrice has moved from counting them to memorizing them, her eyes tracing as they spread like little rivers across the plasterwork. Part of her thinks she should really talk to the owner about it, but another part of her knows it’s not worth the attention. (Plus, if they fixed the cracks in the ceiling, there wouldn’t be anything to look at other than Ava, and that would almost certainly drive Beatrice completely over the edge into madness.) Beatrice lies awake most mornings just like this, watching the cracks in the ceiling (one, two, three, four, five). She tries her very best not to think, so instead she counts. There are two pairs of pajamas she likes to wear, and a third set Ava stole during the first week and refuses to return. There are thirteen vertical stripes on the topsheet, at least nine of which are on Ava’s side of the bed, because she hogs every blanket in her orbit. And Beatrice can’t really blame her; Ava’s feet are freezing, and it’s always a shock when their limbs happen to touch through the night.

I saw something and I immediately had to report it to you.

I was on TikTok, and you probably don't know this, but there is a section on TikTok that is just Minecraft parkour videos in the background and it has audio of an AI voice reading something from reddit. Sometimes it's little writing prompts, sometimes it's AITA, and sometimes it's just people saying stuff that they figured out and they're theories.

I came across one of those videos and it was about Avatar. The title was "The theory my girlfriend came up with ruined Avatar The Last Airbender for me" and it was a video of a guy talking about watching the show with his girlfriend, and then watching the bedroom scene, and the girlfriend pausing this show and going like "hey, is Azula trying to fuck Zuko here?"

And then the girlfriend started pointing out all the things about the scene that feel a little bit seductive and the boyfriend was like "oh my God you actually have a point" and he posted about it and Reddit and the Reddit story ended up on TikTok, and everyone in the comment section was like "the girlfriend is reaching" and "she's looking too much into it" and stuff like that.

So little ol' me, being the loyal Zucest shipper I am, I decided to stir up the pot a little bit and post a comment mentioning that Grey purposely tried to make Azula's voice seductive in this scene, and that there are other similar little moments in the show that kind of lean towards Zucest 😆

Right now, the comment is very recent, so nobody has seen yet, but this will be the start of an era. I might manage to convert some people into Zucestism, or I might get banned from the platform trying. This could result to Zucest reigning over Atla TikTok. I am prepared to go to war.

It's still a bit surreal to me that the fandom really has changed so much so quickly. If you find some old posts about that scene from before ATLA was on Netflix, the overwhelming majority of the comments are making jokes about Zucest. The split wasn't "Does this look incestuous to you or not?", it was "Are you into it or not?"

EVERYONE knew exactly what was going on in that scene. And Grey has NEVER been subtle about liking the thought of Zuko and Azula being a thing (and wanting to see people freak out about it and make Dante blush because she thrives on the chaos).

I didn't want to do my homework so I have mapped out the “Hey, Squashcat!” house (again) and drew this using that floor plan, instead. It’s sort of a redraw of this piece on my DeviantArt that I didn’t repost here because it’s old.

With a new brush and an actual method of drawing interior scenes, I think I’ve finally produced a background that feels like my style. I did this as a distraction from a similar piece that I kind of gave up on. I might finish that one at some point.

The ROCK poster has been a staple of Grey’s bedroom for many years now, even through many redesigns. I think it started as a joke about rock music? It just is, now.
