Diary of a Big Ole Gay - 2/21/2023

Hey whores, I realized that its been a minute but I've lost a bit of steam this month on my Search for gay smooches. but lets get this out of the way not because I don't want to make you cum emotional, intellectional, and academically but because daddy is very busy this week and he wants to make sure that we have some time together before I have to get back to work. *kisses*

I Was a Male War Bride (1949) dir. Howard Hawks

This was a recent favorite of this list which is ironic because its the least gayest film on this list. I was a Male War Bride is essentially one half enemies to lovers and one half bueracratic farce as Cary Grant deals with a goverment system that expects a women but gets a man. In some small sense thats pretty politically clear but this film is objectively straight in a pretty wholesome way. You have what is clearly a partnership of equals and cary grant is put into this submissive role as the male in the relationship.

The Reason why its on this list is that Cary Grant does drag in this. I noticed that moving into the post war not only does the use of cross-dressing deminish but the Coquette Drag, (serving fish, serving cunt, hunty), is replaced with Edward S. Porter Spinster drag. These men are supposeed to look uggo honey. TBF cary grant has a very butch face so its a bit of a miss sweedie situration but the producers purposely wanted him to appear "manish" in his depiction. Honestly compare this with Some Like It Hot.

Testament of Orpheus (1960) dir. Jean Cocteau

The ending of the Orphic Trilogy, its arthouse in the most aggresively way possible. We see a lot of his stylistic choices and what we get is a Sister Age-esque story of coming to terms with death.

This film is a little more visually gayer then Orpheus. Cocteau gropes his muse a bunch in this but if anything this series is the epitome of the Gay Artiste trope and while very Kinema very Movie Critic, it has a lack of overt queer text that I'm looking for on this list.

Olivia (1951) dir. Jacqueline Audry

A spiritual sucessor to Madchen in Uniform this is a movie that is more gay in the sense that theres more lesbians in it. This film has a lot of similar elements, (the gynocentric world of a isolated boarding school and mommy kinks), but it for me at least doesn't have the same queer longing that I loved about MIU.

However this is a must watch for the sapphics so don't listen to the man-words of this little homo.

Everything Else I Watched.

oof lets see the entire filmography of Emile Reynaud. First 20 Bitesize Nightmares shorts. The Prom Night, Ginger Snaps, Cube, and Rec Sequels. Slumber Party Massacre 2. Some shorts from Bruce of Los Angelas, Every Stag Film on LB except for the Virgin in Hot Pants. Oh and Battleship Potemkin. So I've been busy watching other stuff.

Also shout out to Raquel 1:1(2022) I reviewed it for Breaking Glass and its actually pretty good.

Sound Opinion: Memories Not Made Should Save Lives

If things had gone according to plan, Sound Bites would be a bit groggy this morning, having just spent one more Saturday night with Bob Weir and Wolf Bros.

He'd have soldiered on through the day and headed down to Cincinnati tonight to see Aoife O’Donovan, guaranteeing he’d a walking zombie at work on Monday.

And it would have been worth every sleepy second.

But seeing these acts certainly isn’t worthy dying for - or making someone else sick. So instead, the blog spent Saturday evening blogging, playing with his cats, staring at his fish tank and cooking for Mrs. Sound Bites, a heroic public-health nurse on the frontlines of the local pandemic fight.

We won’t be seeing Rain in Cleveland next weekend.

They’ll be no Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams show at Fur Peace Ranch, nor one a few nights later closer to home.

The Wood Brothers are off.

The Sound Biteses won’t be spending their anniversary with Bruce Hornsby and the Cincinnati Pops as planned. And our weekend engagement with Los Lobos in Cleveland later that week is also kaput.

That rescheduled Tommy Emmanuel gig from 2019?

Moved from April to the fall.

And though it’s not canceled yet, the David Crosby/Joe Walsh get-together at Kent State in May ain’t gonna happen. Todd Rundgren’s two-night run in Cleveland a couple of weeks later seems as likely as a COVID-19 vaccine.

Those King Crimson and Los Lobos summer-gig tickets that arrived over the weekend? Probably as useful as passes to the Grateful Dead’s 1995 fall tour.

Does it suck?

Yeah, it sucks.

But it’s the only wise move. Social distancing is the only thing we have to fight coronavirus right now. And if we do it correctly, 2021 will be a banner year for live music.

That is, if things go according to plan.

Happychild – I only discovered this recently. The webpage is very busy and old school, but the resources are especially useful for beginners.

Jojo sucht das Glück (Jojo searches for happiness)– Jojo is from Brazil and moves to Cologne to study. I like this one because I live really near to Cologne. With German subtitles. Made for German learners. 

Deutschland von Oben (Germany from above) – A programme giving aerial tours of citys in Germany. With German subtitles. 

Verbotene Liebe (Forbidden Love) – A German soap opera where two teens from two different families fall in love. 

Mord mit Aussicht (Murder with a View) – A crime comedy where the lead detective moves from the city of Cologne to the countryside. Again, often called the German Midsommer Murders. (This link is not to youtube. It is to a website called Spinnert.de. I’ve had no problems using it but use at your own risk!)

German movies with English subtitles – A huge list of German movies with English subs. Particularly recommended is Das Leben Der Anderen. 

Honig im Kopf (Head full of honey) – A granddaughter takes her grandfather on one last adventure before he has to go to an old people’s home. 

3 Türken und ein Baby (3 Turks and a baby) – Three Turkish brothers suddenly have to take care of an ex’s baby. 

Bruce Allmächtig (Bruce Almighty) – German dubbed version of Bruce Almighty. 

The Experiment – A very shocking and very violent movie based on the Stanford Prison Experiment. Dubbed in German.
