Trying out pressure canner. For all new beginners, it's time to start learning the necessary skills to be as self sufficient as possible. Don't wait until it's too late. You should have most the basics down and at a few staples canned and shelved by the time leaves begin to turn. Even without food shortages, prices are just getting too high. This is a very important issue that plagues our community, land loss! Did you know that the majority of land owned by Blacks was purchased immediately after emancipation? On the sea islands of SC, including St. Helena, land purchased by blacks was during the Union occupation even before the end of the war. Over the years Black landowners have faced many attacks on their ownership. Land has been lost by many tactics one is the tax sale. “In high-demand areas where land value has skyrocketed (much black-owned heirs property lies in tourist areas along the coasts of North and South Carolina), property taxes go up accordingly. But if your goal is to stay on your land, rather than flip it, and you’re on a fixed income, chances are you at some point you’ll be unable to afford your annual property taxes. The county then has the right to put the property on the auction block—a common way for developers to access land from families who don’t want to sell.” Our friend Sará Reynolds-Green is hosting a fundraiser to help local Gullah landowners pay their taxes and hold on to their family land. https://modernfarmer.com/2019/08/how-did-african-american-farmers-lose-90-percent-of-their-land/ As developers build gated and other high-end housing here, property taxes rise and place harder burdens on locals to hold on to land that has been in their families since Reconstruction. There are 49 stories from 5 southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida (I have 3 Florida stories from my paternal family), Louisiana, and Mississippi. The book is available for preorder so you’ll get it within hours after it’s release on the 24th of October. And if you have northern Florida ancestry from Columbia, Gadsden, Levy, or Suwannee Counties, the Appendix has nearly 100 additional names with their dates that patents were issued. Why just those 5 southern states? This book from Bernice Bennett includes over 30 stories of Black men and women who filed for and received patents for land in accordance with the Homestead Act of 1862 in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. The Homestead Act covered all states except the original colonies (and their derivatives: TN, KY, and WV, as well as Texas). I have 3 stories from my Florida ancestors.
