<FOGLIGHT> my name is first dewdrop of morning. i am the 'representative' for my local group, as nobody else wished to go ahead and be one.

<FOGLIGHT> we all share this 'account'. you may ask any of us anything, but unless you adress one of us specifically i will usually be chosen to answer instead!

<FOGLIGHT> we WERE, to our knowledge, the first and only NATURALLY "autonomous" iterators - we can move freely in our cans, and with the help of our overseers can even leave them!

<FOGLIGHT> we were created like this to ensure we would be able to repair ourselves and each other, and we have been doing that since about two hundred cycles before the ancients left

<FOGLIGHT> we have no method of transportation outside of our current "district", so as it stands we have trouble assisting others. we are working on a way to move ourselves and our overseers over longer distances, so feel free to check on that whenever you wish!

these guys were made to be able to move so they ciuld continuousuly repair themselves forever until they figured out the greatbig problem

the "outskirters"/"shoreliners"/"windbreakers" live in the sparsely-populated shoreline area. they carry "windbreaker trees" - trees meant to be durable and flexible enough to stop the massive winds from destroying everything in the flatlands inland - instead of cities. everyone inland has cities tho

they can visit each other through these massive tubes that they usually use to send things to one another - it's quicker to send pearls and water and etc. then it is to walk (takes a few days of walking compared to the few seconds it takes to shoot a pearl)

they use "markers" to draw energy from the tubes and each other's cans. basically just a form of consent saying "yes throw power into this guy ty"

a few of the outskirters (as in, winter's monsoon) have converted parts of their cans into conservatories for whatever animals they can grab and bring in to safety. this is made possible by the fact that there are certain rooms in their cans that they can safely disable anti-gravity in to conserve power for longer trips. the ancients working on them were very concerned with their wellbeing lmao

instead of focusing on the large problem, most of the iterators in this group spend their time focusing on their hobbies or simply chatting, some even going so far as to lower the energy spent on actually iterating, making them similar to the more hedonistic ancients who were forced out of ascending forever. this will be touched on later!

Hi Dr. Grace! I've been reading about the Hail Mary and was surprised to find you're doing a Q&A of sorts here. How's it treating you? Which do you dread more, the amount of work IRL or exposure to the internet? LOL

I'm curious- it seems like everything has gotten turned upside-down, which must be stressful, but in all of that- what's one pleasant surprise you've had since joining the project?

1. How's Project Hail Mary treating me? OH BOY. Listen, if nothing else, it's going. No adverbs required. There are times when I don't sleep for days because I'm too caught up in the fun of the science; there are other times where I have hour-long existential crises/breakdowns because, you know, the apocalypse; there are movie nights once in a blue moon with the crew; there are boring staff meetings and social events I'd rather skip; there are beautiful sunsets on an aircraft carrier. I don't think I can classify it as a solely good or bad experience -- it's just not dichotomous like that.

2. And, to be honest, I probably dread having to be the pro-tempore social media guy more than the workload. Science is Fun! "The Astrophage Challenge" (????) is not fun! I'm scared of it!

3. (Firstly, yes, this is just like the hit musical Hamilton: the world's turned upside down and gosh-darn it is stressful.) Honestly, despite the whole they're-eating-the-sun thing, aliens existing is/are SUPER cool! I'm a theoretical extraterrestrial molecular biologist by trade (say that five times fast), so it's no surprise that I find them cool as heck, but definitely getting to be the first guy to work with them and (by the way, not bragging at all, ahem ahem) getting to be the guy to name them was definitely a good experience -- though I'm not sure "pleasant" is the exact word.

today on the train home the guy next to me was on his phone and at one point i saw him go on tumblr and he just had like. a normie dash. like it was all photography. of nature and architecture. he was using tumblr the way a heterosexual landscaper for rich people might use instagram. i actually had to watch his screen for a few seconds to be sure it really was tumblr because i was so taken aback by the content he was viewing. this is why algorithmless websites are so beautiful btw because i genuinely didn't know that this side of tumblr even existed. he didn't even so much as scroll past any text posts.

EDIT: look i'm not going to turn off reblogs but i cannot stress enough that THIS WASN'T A HIPSTER BLOG DASH IT WASN'T AN AESTHETIC BLOG DASH IT WAS THE MOST WILDLY GENERIC COLLECTION OF IMAGES YOU HAVE EVER SEEN IN YOUR LIFE. I AM NOT EXAGGERATING OR BEING A QUIRKY FANDOM TUMBLRINA WHEN I SAY "NORMIE" I GENUINELY MEAN "SO NORMAL THAT IT CIRCLES AROUND TO WEIRD". CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME? HELLO?
