my verdict on the day of the doctor novelization is that the plot is still so stupid to me but at least i can live my life knowing moffat can write ten marginally correctly but he only keeps it in a novelization where nobody is going to see it. (my personal highlights under the cut)

this is a really good take on the ten and river dynamic, they're acquaintances and ten purposefully keeps it that way. the "time can be rewritten maybe her horrible death that happened in front of me can be prevented if i stay away from her" really goes well with how he's left after the events of journey's end

"he had to stop thinking before it tore him apart!" is THE most ten narration i've seen in my life. i need to eat rocks

this part just makes me really really sad. the dissociation between the tone and what's actually happening (him getting tortured. for months). how he's so clearly not acknowledging what's happening to him (he won't describe the screaming as his own). how he latches onto the only other presence there and focuses on charming her and making her laugh??? this also makes the hinting at a romance between ten and elizabeth that moffat does, extremely fucking upsetting because you can see how ten is just so fucking lonely and on instinct attaching himself to anyone who has any amount of regular presence to him. even if. well. you know. the torture.

#s2 might be my favorite full season hands down even though some of my favorite single episodes/emotional arcs come later #which is weird bc it also has a lot of stuff in it i DON'T like (the way gordon was handled. some annoying motws. et cetera) #but overall it's well paced entertaining has a great score as per usual for the early years . and balances intrigue with grief and fear #and they're SO headaches. the advil consumption in that household (carhold?) is in the double digits daily . ulcers forming as we speak #also croatoan is in this season! one of THE most dread-filled eps they ever did #plus of course what is & what should never be (goes without saying) all hell breaks loose part one last five minutes (goes WITHOUT saying) #etc etc #like you can tell there's a lot of gamble here but it's in a good way #um. the wizard van telepath. victor hi victor . sorry about these horrible boys . houses of the holy!! there's like zero complete misses #i think gabriel is annoying but the CONCEPT of his first episode was still great. don't love the early jodean dynamic but i like how it end #they spend a lot of time genuinely having to deal with The Law etc . the stuff that happens in this one more than even s1 sets the tone #for like everything that follows. for better or worse. the cycle of death/sacrifice/rebirth/sacrifice . the beginning of the religion angle #the expansion of the world (for a while anyway) #i'd go so far as to call it 'good television' #spn

Who knew Eddie's dream sequence in 5x14 of Christopher, present yet distant, would be foreshadowing for the arc they're going to go through in Season 6

#The tone of that dream has a different feel in light of the fact that Eddie's going to have to learn to exist without the title of #'Father' as his primary source of identity #Eddie in that dream is very much so Dad to a Young Boy: his joke his silliness is that of a father still so enraptured in the youth of #his son. But then the dream turns on its head; Christopher is there but not. Eddie dies in front of him and he doesn't even flinch #I said when the episode aired that the fact that Christopher was in Eddie's trauma-induced dream at all is indicative of the fact #that one of Eddie's primary fears is losing his son. Or (more to the point) his son not needing him anymore. #So I imagine this period of transition that they're in is going to be... a challenge... in many different ways #Especially as Eddie contends with all the time he *missed* being Christopher's dad when he was in the service #Christopher was six years old when Eddie started taking care of him full time; that's six years that he missed #Now Chris is twelve/thirteen and what should have been over a decade with his son was really just 6-7 years #I imagine there's going to be a lot of guilt involved here. Even if we don't see it on screen #knowing the way Eddie's brain works and the incredible standard of honor he holds himself to? #[Honor that exists absent of trauma but just a standard he holds himself to intrinsically...] #It'll be interesting to see that's for sure #jack.txt
