Did y’all know the creator of Tokyo Ghoul, Ishida Sui, did a 70 page one-shot of Hisoka’s origin story… cause I didn’t 😭

Tho not actually canon it feels like it could be (Togashi even agreed with a lot of the concepts). And while not too dark, it definitely has a heavier/raw vibe like Tokyo ghoul unlike whats seen in hxh. Which, even when dealing with heavy moments, is a very bright anime and always seems to turn your head towards an adventure on the horizon.

Anyway look how adorable and crazy tiny Hisoka is! I wanted to redraw some of my favorites from the one-shot so enjoy.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Part of what makes a villain a villain is power. Power that puts them above any pitiful protagonist or side character who wants to put a stop to their machinations. Fiction has given us many seemingly unstoppable abilities over the years including mind control, soul stealing, time manipulation and turning people to dust with a single touch. However, much like real life, anything can cause untold amounts of chaos and destruction if in the right hands, especially if that thing has both the properties of gum and rubber. Hisoka is Hunter X Hunter's resident wildcard with a penchant for magic tricks and death matches. His primary Nen ability (essentially a ki-based super power) is Bungee Gum, named after his favorite brand of chewing gum when he was a kid. With this, Hisoka can turn his life energy into a substance that is both incredibly sticky, incredibly stretchy, super durable and can contract on a whim. Sounds impressive but that's just the basic rundown. The murderous magician's mind has found ways to apply it to many different scenarios. Stick things together? Contract two connected objects together to send the two colliding? Projectile redirection? Use as bungee cords? Reattaching limbs? All that and more! This power is much like the man himself. Creative, versatile, eccentric and seemingly unstoppable. There's nothing else like it and to see it action is always wonderful P.S. I should also give a shout-out to Hisoka's other power, Texture Surprise. With this, he can take a run-of-the mill scarf or cloth and make it look like an incredibly detailed replica of some other surface. Not the best ability for combat but unrivaled when it comes to forgery and fakery. A perfect duo of powers for a self-proclaimed whimsical liar.

@haidyx20​ It’s easier to answer this here than in the comment section if I’m honest, but the short answer is we don’t know.

The long answer is that there are a few fan theories out there about it, but some people (including myself) think he just used bungee gum and texture surprise to replace his injuries. Think of it like plastic surgery or prosthetics, but with his nen abilities. The amount of nen alone to maintain it would be incredible, but there’s also a running theory that his power is like 100x what it was before due to the post-death nen thing so it may not be as taxing as it would have been before.

There’s also the theory that he did heal it based on his conversation with Machi by saying he didn’t need her healing ability anymore, but that would be taking the entire conversation at face value. However counter to that, you see him launch himself much faster from his missing leg a few panels later when he goes to attack Shalnark/Kortopi.

As to how he’s able to walk, his bungee gum can be as thick as rubber which could hold him up with enough effort. Rubber can be pretty dense and not as jiggly as you would think if there’s enough of it mashed together. It’s also springy/spongy so he could with some practice walk.

I don’t know if you’re up to date with the manga so mild spoilers for the current chapters, but one of the new chapters shows Hisoka starting to take a card from someone but he suddenly retracts his hand as if he remembers he cannot grasp/hold anything with it. It’s the same hand he would’ve used would’ve been the one that had its fingers blown off from the fight with Chrollo, and current theory is he isn’t actually able to use his fingers despite having the appearance of his hand.

A leg would be easier to fool/manipulate because all he has to do is use it as a spring. But really in the end, we just don’t know and Togashi has not clarified it as of yet. For all we know, Hisoka is powerful enough to actually heal himself now. That would make him an incredibly scary threat.

Anyway, I’m sorry for the long-winded explanation but I hope it helps clear up the confusion somewhat. I look forward to seeing more of him and find out what’s really going on. :)
