Volume 9 episode 8 reaction
That's a hell of a thumbnail and again an interesting title of tea admist terrible trouble, the Alice and wonderland parallels continue.
The title is as Good as Ever And again ruby is sitting by a tree,
ep1 parallels woo.
No dont yell at little!Punches tree like shes playing minecraft
Dam its dark already, okay rt spotlight of pressure we get it.
And the house of neo.
So much backstories in these portraits
HES BACK, its amazing i love it.
THE META YEEEEE
Its just like chibi said nothing bad ever happened and i love it this kind of meta is what i wanted from a fairytale volume.
The subtle camera work really sells it.V3 call backs wooo.
Reset you say?
Its interesting how we did actually hear neo before she strikes,
nice bit of attention to detail.
But yeah ive got loads of ideas about this little sequence, how neo projects to torchwick, the leaves from the tree, why the tea is rainbow, looking forward to going over this ep in detail.
But for now Action!
love Neopolitan, was my favourite character untill v8 and Ambrose. But best girl is back and the umbrella twister of fight scenes is hinted at beautifully with that little entrance.
And she know shes best girl, that smile to roman.
And back to bees plus Weiss
Wiess no your comedic relief not serious.
I love this fight, the colors the shade ruby hears the fall penny turning and penny just savage and so dark its amazingly blocked.
This is the moral story i wanted from v7 and v8
The blur of good and evil and if team rwby are the hero's. Reminds me of clone wars and its change of perspective. But obviously very different.
Also little is still adorable while so scared.
Alright the "well shit" moment is apon us.
So yeah that got dark. Rose garden fans how ya doing?
Its framed so well.
The staff
the change to oscar,
and then neo pulls out the cards with qrow and rwby and jnpr.
Then she steps in herself, best girl.
And the cat ex machina, this is fucking dark.
Okay so the cat says maker, and the cat wants a purpose, and also the relics are made, and the relics are hidden in pocket dimensions.
Yeah I'm saying it, the cat is the crown.
Now i don't love this idea (go watch the video on yt) because i feel like this should be the reset volume with no links to any wider stuff on remnant, like a pause and then we go back to normal but with growth and deeper relationships. But i see it.
And as a call back in volume 10 or 11 it would be awesome, just not as they leave with the crown from the ever after, that's gonna take a lot of convincing to get me on board. Okay back to the reaction:
Again i love it.
And neo wants it all for herself.
And poor little, gonna come back to that,
and back to the tea.
I mean yeah rubys not dead, but wow who said this was filler
we just said the main new character of the cat is trying to get a permanent body and using ruby as it, and then killed the title character, nkt a volume for beginners.
Also yeah its a metaphor for
Suicide, woo.
And neo is batshit crazy, but we knew that anyway.
I assume the voice of roman was always there, always chippin away at neos mental state.
But addressing the cat, wtf?
Like it went inside her?
Mate what the hell is going on i thought i was watching rwby?
I enjoyed it, i really did its so good, but its dark and wacky and yeah this volume better stay self contained cause this plus salem and grimm would be too much.
I dont like neo speaking and i dont like that model, with all of neos new semblance and again cat just peaces out like ruby at the end of last episode.
So my final thoughts and mini theories.
What's littles Ascension gonna be?I love that we get 2 ships confirmed, like roman and neo were already pretty much cannon, but just to reaffirm it.
Also the i think the writers are telling us something with his consumed neo got by killing ruby that after she drank the tea, neo broke.
Like straight up died inside, even her inner voices got worried,
i wonder if RWBY can use that info to sedate Salem or something, involving sacrifice and all that good jazz.
Also dude we got jaunes saving neo, kinda.
That face gives me hope for the dark ass RWBY i wanted from this volume, but also nightmares. Why cat want to suck my soul and body? has cat done this before?
(Sorry for the swearing i try not to with these but this episode is as close to losing its pg13 rating as rt have dared go before so i hink its warranted)
Thanks for reading y'all, stay tuned for in depth theories and read my other stuff, I'm only wrong 50% of the time.
Steal my gifs, go on do it

Interdimensional Moms: part 1
Intro <-
Yang:So how we doin this? Drawing straws or... well we actually don’t have straws here so-
Weiss:It’s obvious that you wanna go first.
Blake:Extremely obvious.
Ruby:All over your face.
Yang:Hey now, don’t call me out like that! We all have so much to sort out here. I don’t even know where to begin. Differences could start and stop anywhere for all we really know.
Blake:From what it seems, Beacon itself would have one or two minor changes, but the real changes start after the fall. At least, for you three that is.
Weiss:You saying you’re different?
Blake:Unless you three started going on dates with Jaune at Beacon, then yes, I’m different.
RWY:(They’ve been together that long!?)
Yang:Okay, starting from Beacon...nothing really stands out too much. Jaune and I were just friends. *cringes* Back then, a certain faunus caught my eye.
Blake:Ah...right. I guess that tracks in practically every universe.
RW:Oh yeah it does. You two are joined at the hip.
Yang:Haha, really? Glad to hear it. My Blake and I are best buds! Remnant has never seen such a dynamic duo! Can’t say it didn’t take a lot of time effort after a rough patch. We actually dated in my world.
Blake:Same.
Yang:What!? How long?
Blake:I don’t know, it was pretty on again off again.
Yang:Well for me it was after Haven. Both of us had gotten pretty serious. All the growing we’ve done together and apart had brought us closer. However, Adam unintentionally put a wedge between us. His attempt to change and the problems that came with it were-
Yang stopped midway and saw the confused faces of her otherworldly teammates. They were shocked, confused even. Especially Blake, who looked the most shocked of all.
Yang:Umm did I say something odd?
Blake:Adam, he...isn’t dead?
Yang:Oh, well I guess that’s the start of the major changes then. Blake and I fought Adam at Argus. Stabbed him through the chest and watched him fall down rocks into a river.
Ruby:That lines you with my world. Dude died that day. Like any normal person should.
Yang:Well Adam is anything but fucking normal. Man has the craziest luck. A young women, the winter maiden in fact, she saved his life. She’s not exactly normal either. The maiden, Jacquelyn, ended up sticking by him to see if she could change his ways. This naturally meant we’d run into them again. And that’s how things fell apart.
Blake:What do you mean?
Yang:You were fully committed to seeing if Adam could actually change. I wasn’t, so we constantly butted heads in any situation involving him. Then we would fight about things that had nothing to do with at all. Eventually, we broke it off. We remained on decent terms but I was pretty heartbroken about the disconnect. Enter our lovable blonde idiot. Jaune did everything in his power to cheer me up.
Weiss:Sounds like him. Always such a bleeding heart. That boy just can’t help himself. Let me guess, his kindness and concern made you feel all warm and fuzzy?
Yang:Hehe, guilty. It was more of his willingness to laugh at my puns. Jaune’s always been interesting to talk to. He tries to act cool and calm even though he’s terrible at it, then comes clean right after. Before I knew it I was telling him things I hadn’t talked about with people before. I could tell he looked at me like most guys do, but also genuinely wanted to listen to me. Talk about playing unfair; he got defenseless. Suddenly I was smiling again. Anytime with him was time well spent. Then one day, I kissed him.
Ruby:Happily ever after?
Yang:Not even close! Hahaha!
Weiss:Why do you sound proud?
Yang:It’s funny looking back at it to a certain degree. Gods, I was such a brat. More than a few fights are on me. Between Blake, Raven, and other experiences, my insecurities flared up in ugly ways over nothing. It even got us to break up too. I was officially done with dating. My Ruby was out in an uncomfortable position.
Ruby:I bet! I’d never want you two fighting. Especially in my world. Picking between the person I love and my sister!? I don’t know what will happen.
Yang:I kinda do. *sets up* You’d start dating Jaune because you’ve looked at him since Beacon. The two of you would confide in each other and share a special kind of love, but it would be bittersweet. All because your sister still pines for him and never met to make him leave, and Jaune never says it, but he hates how things fell apart. He’s faithful to you and would never do you wrong, a guy to truly cherish. So... you let him go. Watch him walk back to your sister like you asked, because my happiness was worth that much to you.
Ruby:....
Yang: In my world at least. Honestly it’s still the most amazing thing I’ve seen you do. We must’ve cried over that conversation for hours. I felt so guilty and you only smiled, hugging me tight. Jaune and I had a few more stumbles. Nothing serious though. Eventually we moved in together when the world was saved. You and Oscar got together officially which made me happy. Even made our weddings a competition of who’d make dad bawl his eyes out the most. You won by the way; Raven came back into our family and into dad’s arms. Last but not least I had a baby. Yujin Xiao Long, my fucking pride and joy from above.
Weiss:Wow, that’s a lot.
Blake:What am I doing? Did I marry Sun?
Yang:Yep. You and blondes Blake, I tell ya.
Weiss:Hold the phone! Who am I with!?
Yang:Pretty sure you’re technically single. Buuuut, Neo and your have gotten pretty friendly from what I managed to interrogate out of you.
Weiss:That’s, highly unexpected. For a number of reasons.
Yang:Better believe it. Besides Cinder, a few crazies, and Salem, a few people made something of themselves. Dying sucks after all.
Ruby:You have a dead Cinder?
WBY: You don’t?
Ruby:*crosses arms* Hmph, I’ll wait my turn. Yang, you said you’re the only mother from our team. If Blake and I have been married for quite some time then what, we don’t want kids?
The joyful sunshine from Yang slipped into grayer skies. Her smile faded and it increasingly got harder to look at this Ruby without thinking of her own.
Yang:Are you sure that’s something you wanna know? I’ll tell you, but I didn’t want to bring down the mood with the problems where I from.
Blake:Problems? How big of a problem.
Yang:The biggest we’ve faced. It’s...a lot.
Ruby:Well we’ve listened this far. *takes hand* Lay it on us.
Yang:Pfft, oh boy. So...umm...another secret war came up. One that caused us to leave our friends and family for over a decade.
Weiss:A decade!?
Blake:What gets worse after Salem!? Who tries anything after a grimm queen!?
Yang:So a majority of Remnant was still unaware of her, but a fight like that can only be kept under wraps so tightly. Plenty of people still learned fractions of the truth. A few of those people weren’t exactly nice guys. They idolized her efforts and became her followers that wanted to keep her will alive, starting with taking revenge on the people who defeated her. We were so unaware. So caught up in normalcy. They ambushed us, and I mean everyone. We...we didn’t come out unscathed. Ren was crippled badly. Weiss, you almost your brother. Jaune’s family got hit but thankfully lived. The real casualties were aimed to hurt Ruby.
Ruby:Oh, of course. S-So, either you’re about to say I had no time to start a family, or...
Yang:...
Yang:When I tell you the look you made when you learned what happened to Oscar, to Qrow... that’s the moment it felt like my little sister left forever. Till this day you don’t smile like you used to. Very recently, now that it’s finally over, you’ve started looking better, but those ten years were hell. We choose to go out and fight again, avoiding contact with family. I haven’t had a real opportunity to be in my daughters life.
Ruby:How old is she?
Yang:Sixteen soon. Left her when she was four so you know. *tearing up* I missed everything. Just about anyways. Ironically it was Raven and Adam that helped her through the years with Jaune and Dad. Eventually we came back and ooohh boy was Yujin not thrilled in the slightest. Hehehe. Her right hook is really strong. I only had about a week with her before things got complicated again. *wipes eyes* But it’s okay. We left on good term. Something I definitely don’t feel like I deserve.
Blake:I can’t believe a thing like that would be possible.
Yang:Cults are a huge problem in Remnant now. You’re definitely aware of that. You actually oversee a little group from the shadows to deal with them in secret. An idea you got from experience. Adam works for you and everything. Hate to admit, but he’s become the guy you wanted him to be. Even has a family. I’m grateful to him. He personally kept my girl safe.
Blake:To think I’d hear you say that. Now I know this isn’t my world.
Yang:Don’t get me wrong, I still will hit him if given the chance. My life hasn’t been charmed and sacrifices too great were happening way too many times but it finally has gotten to a point where everyone feels like we’re taking steps towards a better future.
Weiss:Moving forward?
Yang:Yes, I was trying to avoid the phrase but yes Weiss, we’re moving forward. Still... *looks at Ruby*....
Ruby:W-What?
Yang:It’s unreal seeing you like this. My Ruby has become so strong and endured but hasn’t really picked herself up completely. All her tragedy stemmed from the loss of Oscar and Qrow; her last talk with Oscar was fight about kids too. That’s the entire reason she went off alone in the first place. Looking at you I can’t help but question my own choices. If...I just let her stay with Jaune, then maybe-
Ruby:Nope.
Yang:Huh?
Ruby:Look, if I know anything about your world, then it’s gonna be me and I can tell you without a doubt your Ruby doesn’t blame or would consider her own happiness without you. She loved you enough to take the chance to find love again. You really think there’s anything you could’ve done differently at that point. That girl is as stubborn as they come! *smiles* So buck up cowgirl. You deserve it.
A sense of warmth came over Yang as she heard those words. This other Ruby smiled at her with the same love as her own; completely caring about Yang’s feeling before her own. Yang felt so...unburdened. She couldn’t help but cry a little, laughing softly as she did. Who would’ve thought love could transcend worlds? It was so vindicating, therapeutic even.
Yang:Ruby, you’re something else entirely, you know that?
Ruby:It’s my curse. All I ever wanted was normal knees but the world said “no, special eyes!”
Yang:Well I guess I should thank the world then?
Weiss:You said your Ruby is getting better? That’s good. Still, it must be pretty weird looking at Jaune. Can’t imagine how lonely it must feel losing a love twice.
Blake:It never numbs.
Yang:Geez you two, lighten up. We can’t all be depressed. Ruby also didn’t lose Jaune. Actually....there may or may not have been an interesting...arrangement for a brief period of time.
Ruby:Ehhh what?
Yang:Hehehe well, hahaha, ummmm a decade is a very long time without feeling any kind of pleasure in a bleak situation. And you know me, I have to share things with you all my life.
Ruby:OH MY GOD!!!
Blake:*grinning* Yooooo! You loaned out Jaune!?
Weiss:That’s....accurate; in a lot of ways.
Ruby:That’s so scandalous! How could you!?
Yang:I didn’t force it! I gave the option, you said no, then you changed your mind because things got real stressful. Like come on, a decade of death and loneliness.
Ruby:Sigh...yeah. I can see it. Still, it’s so filthy. He’s a married man. What, so I’d just look at you and say “Yang I’m gonna sleep with Jaune, don’t come in the room.”
Yang:....
Ruby:What?
Yang:....Nothing.
Ruby:Bullshit! What is it!?
Yang:*scratches head* Well, I was lonely too, and a week is only so long-
Weiss:Oh so it was a group thing!!?
Ruby:WHAT!?
Yang:Only sometimes!
Ruby:SOMETIMES!?
Blake:HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! THAT IS AMAZING!
Ruby:Why are you laughing!?
Blake:Because that’s just so extreme, and not, all at the same time. I could totally see that happening.
Weiss:Same. Dang, Jaune slept with sisters. That’s dangerously close to being like your dad.
Ruby:That’s different!
Blake:Is it though?
Yang:Eh, I don’t see the problem. We’re all grown and make choices. Plus I’m the one who guided you through awkward teenage changes. It not like we didn’t share a room for years.
Ruby:That doesn’t make it okay.
Yang:Eh debatable.
Ruby:*red* It isn’t though! How could I do something so bold!? So taboo!?
Weiss:It isn’t like you’re the one who did it. Just a version of you.
Ruby:Not better!
Yang:Awwww it’s okay Ruby. Let’s hug it out. Hehehe *opens arms*
Ruby:Don’t touch me!
Weiss and Blake laugh until their sides hurt as Ruby tries escaping the bear hug that terrorized her. Yang’s world found interesting for sure. Weiss finally decides to help Ruby out.
Weiss:Got a picture of Yujin?
Yang’s eyes lit up and pulled out her scroll. Her team huddled around her and collectively cooed like that parents they are at the sight of a blonde young girl with gorgeous blue eyes with a black combat school graduation cap and gown and a certificate proudly raised up high. If it wasn’t for those eyes and shoulders length hair, they might’ve mistaken her for Yang.
Yang:She’s going to Beacon early because she’s fucking awesome like her mom.
Ruby:I think you mean her aunt?
Yang:I know what I said.
Weiss:I bet she’s just as hardheaded.
Blake:What do you think your kid is up to right now?
Yang: Well...*smiles*
xxxx
The girl in question sat at a work bench with oil on her face and her hands busy tinkering with gauntlets. She looked over at blueprints in a journal. If they were right, then she was definitely doing something wrong. How her mother made something so complex was crazy!
Yujin:Come on Yujin. You can fix a car, making gauntlets into a sword that don’t break should be easy!
Footsteps came up from behind her and a plate stacked with sandwiches. She looked up and smiled at her dad that gave her a wink, then kissed her forehead.
Jaune:Haveing fun, you grease monkey.
Yujin:Jokes on you, I like monkeys. Just a few more attempts and I’ll have the coolest weapon in Remnant. That entrance exam is as good as aced.
Jaune:Not if you don’t have a landing strategy. Tomorrow we’re going on a trip.
Yujin:Does it happen to be near a cliff?
Jaune:Who can say? Rule one of being a huntsman, be prepared for everything.
He ruffled her hair and left, laughing evilly. Yujin could tell he’s been waiting for this day. She pulled out her scroll and searched through a collection of videos labeled “mom” and found a super early one. She hit play and watched her mother give a peace sign to the camera as trees increasingly got closer from below.
Yang:Beacon rules!!!! Wooohooo!
The camera flipped and focused on a familiar blonde flailing through the air like a doll in the distance.
Yang:Oof, hate to be that guy! Wait, that’s vomit boy! Hahah, hope he survives. He owes me shoes. Poor dude. I guess he needs more training in flirting and landing. Wait, eugh I think he barfed again! Hahaha!
Jaune:Stop watching that one!!!!
Yujin:Hahaha but it’s the best one. The ending is priceless.
Jaune: *walks back down*
Yang:Well if he survives this I guess I can off him at least I can offer him mints and company. Fake it to ya make Jaune. Between me and Ruby, at least you’ll look like a player. Heh, nah, I don’t think I can support a bunny onesie.
Yujin and Jaune:*grinning* And then she did! *high-fives* Arc charm, baby!

Am curious friendo about how many self inserts you have, what they are from and how they fit into their universes. Gives me a baseline for future questions ^^
crackles knuckles here we go
I have 12 self inserts in total:
Trollhunters: si is a witch, who can manipulate shadows into physical objects, either for summoning weapons or simply knocking people over, and has some ability in hexing folk. The Janus Order, as they serve the Pale Lady, keeps track of witches, and if they find one that is ‘beneficial’ then they infiltrate their life to bring the witch over to the Order eventually.
downside for my si, she ends up on the wrong side of the Atlantic when the Order decides she would be beneficial for them to be assisting in stopping the Trollhunter thanks to her hex ability. except she’s very volatile and Angor Rot doesn’t like witches
they end up being able to find common ground eventually, especially when they are forced to work together.
Critical Role: si is a sorcerer who, having difficulty holding down a job when the employers are naturally terrified of anyone with evil-looking shadow smoke magic, ends up rolling with Gustav’s circus. she arrives after Mollymauk and Yasha, so there’s a few months of adapting and being welcomed before everything goes to hell in a handbasket
she trucks along with Molly and Yasha, quietly doing her best to help keep the Nein safe and hoping no-one decides that she’s the enemy of the day.
Kingdom Hearts: si is a human with some good magical capability, mostly in regards to weapon summoning and less proficient in world-hopping portals (in that she can do it, but she can’t focus on where she’s going and it’s entirely possible the portal simply Won’t Happen)
so during one of these portal-hopping incidents she ends up in the World That Never Was. yeah, the portals are very volatile. Axel finds her hiding in a corridor terrified out of her mind and he works with Roxas and Xion to try and hide her away until the panic of an intruder has died down. this ultimately back-fires, and my si ends up managing to persuade Xemnas to let her work along the Organisation as a spy to other worlds, someone who isn’t a Nobody and wouldn’t be picked up on so quickly.
it works. and now she spends downtime with Axel, Demyx and co., living in the Castle.
Hellboy: si is…..well she’s human for the most part. at some point in her life she was smacked with a curse that meant if her heart rate got above a certain threshold, she would turn into a huge bear-wolf monster with a skull for a face.
after a few ‘whumping out’ incidents, she decides to turn herself over to the BPRD for safety, and ends up on the team with Hellboy, Abe and Liz. life is balancing work in the field and trying not to die or accidentally brutalise a solider, and managing the fine line between chaos and normality of downtime in the BPRD headquarters.
Marvel Cinematic Universe: si is human for the most part, bar the ability to summon her familiar, named ‘Dog’….a huge bear-wolf monster with a skull for a face (look I like my Grimm). the only thing that can stop Dog from coming out to play is intense concentrated light.
this is the MCU so honestly my si and Dog can be running around all over the place and getting into trouble. at one point she ends up at the Avengers headquarters with a torso peppered with gunshot, at another point she’s managed to make her way across to New York. she goes where she pleases, and you can be sure chaos will follow soon after.
Star Wars (Rebels/Clone Wars): ok, this is one of the few where my si is straight-up me shunted into another universe. I have all my Star Wars knowledge on hand, which quickly turns me into a suspicious but helpful ally.
what is more, it’s Rebels/Clone Wars because….well, some time-shift bullshit happens and I start getting pinged between timelines. it’s random, not very helpful, and especially peculiar for people either side (I meet Hondo for the first time 10 cycles after he meets me for the last time, I suddenly appear to exhibit much better sniping capabilities thanks to several months in the past practising them). there’s also the matter of I am perfectly capable of taking canon events and slam-dunking them in the trash, causing reality to do a double take and various combustion and electrical abilities to manifest in me.
however I am also just over 20 years old and that significantly buffers any potential carnage I could cause if faced off against a main villain.
FFXV (?): question-mark is in place because this universe is very higgle-piggle. si is a Hunter with basic weapon summoning and can craft elemental grenades. she’s also missing two years of memory between living at home in Tenebrae and living in Lestallum.
so, she Hunts. she takes odd jobs. at one point she’s contracted to escort a Prince and his friends from Lestallum to the coast.
Person of Interest: normally I like to keep to the status of the universe in regards to how much magic is normally shown in them. Star Wars universe is a loose exception. Person of Interest is a VERY HEAVY exception.
si is a human with electrical manipulation. nothing fancy like lightning strikes, more like capable of giving a taser zap or turning machines on/off. she comes to Manhattan on holiday and doesn’t take much time before dropping into the path of Samaritan vs. Team Machine. the addition of even more science-fiction upturns the playing field, and she does her best to assist the team despite not being military trained and even when her number comes up.
Infamous: Second Son: this one is more of a ‘give me a playing field for new powers’. si is a Conduit with the capability to travel through mirrors and other reflective surfaces. it makes her a useful scout - dip in, get information, jump into the nearest mirror before someone can stop her.
I never really got around to planning any interactions with canon characters or plot, if anything she could’ve been a hireable side-character that could scout a place that could then give Delsin/the player more info on the mini-map.
Ratchet & Clank: si is a human. just human. no magic, no special anything. the only significant thing is that instead of being on Earth, she ends up on an alien planet very much too far from home.
The Smuggler steps up when someone tries to pawn her off in a black market, and from then on it’s classes in smuggling, thievery, and Big. Fucking. Guns.
Fullmetal Alchemist: cackling oooooooh boy. oh boy. like Kingdom Hearts, this one went through a few conversions until I settled on something I liked
my si in this universe is in pure chaotic trickster mode. just so long as she doesn’t kill anyone, she is down for anything with any party. coming in equipped with ‘screw the rules I have lightning’, I won’t actually use my powers until actually threatened.
Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them: si is ya bogstandard Slytherin graduate from Hogwarts. decides to become an animagus, signs up on the list of animagi and promptly disappears to Poland until she’s recruited by Newt as an artist for his book.
turns out her process to become an animagus was interrupted and her animal form irreparably malformed, becoming a horse-sized wolfhound that leaks magic and doesn’t have total human cognition. oops.

SMFDR magic!au headcanons
A/N: as promised, i give to you the smfdr boys featuring angsT. im currently still working on the fic so stay tuned y’all because i might do another hc post with other characters (; and as always, enjoy (and check out my girl @11wolfpup11 because she’s my co in this). sidenote: Luna Andre is my oc and is John Andre and Peggy Shippen Andre’s daughter. all ya need to know for now is shes a freckley, sassy cutey that will do anything for her fam and a-a-ron
Thomas:
Death Wizard
dis poor boy can kill or weaken any living thing with just the touch of his hand
hell, any part of him is almost toxic
and he hates it more than anything, I mean who wants to be friends with someone who can’t give hugs or even the smallest gestures without the fear of dying at his hand?
honestly, no one really fucks with him
most avoid him at all costs besides James, but sometimes that’s a good thing
he can also sometimes talk to spirits and the dead as his ability is often linked to the dark arts, but the ghosts and such have to be the ones to contact him first
it scared the shit out of him the first time it happened
one of the other students’ dead grandparents reached out to him in the middle of class and he flipped the fuck out
but he himself has yet to hear from his own parents...
sometimes other students call him the Grimm Reaper
This boy would give anything to have a new power
he tries hard not to use his powers because someone either gets hurt or ends up passing out in the middle of class
he shoves it all down but because he’s so damn powerful (one of the most powerful in the school) but it leaks out anyways
it usually just kills nearby plants in which James fixes
most times he wears a lot of thick clothing and black leather gloves to keep himself from hurting people
when he first found out what he could do, he accidentally killed his parents
no one mentions it unless they literally have a death wish
either way, he’s tried so hard to try and erase the power from his soul
he’s tried spells and potions and chants and even tried to sell his soul because, i mean, if he doesn’t have a soul then he wouldn’t have any magic as magic always originates within one’s soul
James didn’t let him out of his sights for weeks after that
Did i mention he loves attention and affection?
Tommy boy puts on this sort of ‘bad boy’ aura to push people away but deep down he just wants affection
he never shows it in public but when he and James are alone in their shared dorm room, he’ll let James put flowers in his poofy curls and rant about how much he hates how Professor Hewlett gets sidetracked so easily in class
he’ll make sassy remarks in class all the time just to get the attention
and most times, it’s hilarious
emphasis on most
but he still always has a soft spot for his best friend
My boy trusts James Madison more than anyone else
because of James’ counteracting power, the two sorta just fit
Thomas is able to take his gloves off around him and be comfortable, mostly in the setting of their dorm
it took him a while to be able to do that kind of stuff because for most of his life he didn’t touch anyone
but when James assured time after time Thomas’ powers don’t affect him, eventually he became more himself around James and allowed himself to be comfortable with touches and pretend he doesn’t feel his pulse quicken and his heart jump in his throat bc fuck he loves his Jemmy
Sometimes it’s not enough
there are some instances where Thomas looses himself in the pure amount of strength his power has and James has to be the one to pull him back
and despite James being equally as strong, it still weakens him
Thomas never forgets those times...
he’ll lock himself away from everyone, including James for days
it’s like his power surges in him, begging him to release darkness and death on every damn student
it’s hard to control it and it comes in big waves, usually in correspondence with his anger issues because
this poor boy gets mad pretty fast
but James is still always there for him
he defends Tom and protects him
through it all, it always seems like they were meant to be
James:
Life Wizard
can bring most things to life and heal wounds
although depending on what the thing is or what kind of wound depends on hard it is to actually resurrect or heal
he really likes to heal plants and can even spawn lil flowers and such
he’s honestly the cutest flower boy
if he passes a dying tree or wilting flower, he always stops and makes it the most lively, beautiful thing he mostly does it with what Thomas accidentally kills
he takes pride in it but sometimes his gift can be a burden
when he first discovered them he revived someone who was dead while he was at damn funeral
it was a shit show
The most puRE
he wears these round glasses and is the quiet type in classes
if he notices someone upset or nervous, he leaves them a flower on their desk as an anonymous person but everyone knows it’s him
he has his own garden in his dorm along a window on his side of the room and checks it over every morning
he knows how much Thomas tries to avoid his garden in fear of killing it but he trusts him to not do it intentionally
Thomas sometimes gives him skulls he finds in the woods that surrounds the school and James likes to fill them with flowers and put them in the garden
“That just takes away the intimidation purpose of it, Jemmy.”
“Shush, you love it.”
usually he can pick out the days Thomas will be moodier than usual and makes sure to put on his favorite show and give him all the love and affection he wants
and yes, he loves putting flowers - usually violets - in Tom’s hair
his favorite flower type to grow are blossoming flowers because he likes the way they just bloom
Even though he pure, he fierce
don’t let appearance fool you
he may be a smol cute little guy but when it comes to people talking crap about Jefferson or shutting down his own brilliant ideas and works, he will throw down
there was this one time he “accidentally” had a giant vine wrap around another student, hanging him on a ceiling fan
he’s very methodical and cold in his fierceness but combined with Thomas’ brutality and kill-first-ask-questions-later attitude they’re kinda known as people to never get on the bad side of
Aaron:
Shadow Wizard
this bean can control or manipulate shadows and darkness to his will
in some ways he can even travel through shadows but he has to envision just exactly where he want to go and its kinda complex
but he can also use his power as a dark art even though he doesn’t prefer to do that
he mostly uses his powers to create shadow puppets and mimics that are mindless, dark creatures that are harmless and normally gentle that he can control (though he prefers not to most times)
everyone’s a little bit intimidated by him though because of his mysteriousness and just... dark aura
He loves his shadow puppets
he summons them to help with simple tasks or for company
sometimes, he sings with them for his own entertainment
it helps to avoid his loneliness
(Shadows: we dream of a brand new start, Burr: but we dream in the dark for the most part)
or he sometimes uses them to eavesdrop and sneak around because why not?
his favorite ones looks like a raven that perches on his shoulder as he does his work
Not the most social person but loves the hecc outta his friends
Aaron generally has two main friends - Luna Andre and Theodosia Prevost
Luna and him have been best friends since the very beginning, instantly connecting. they both came to Flilria around the same time so it was easy to gravitate towards each other in terms of cluelessness and such
before he met Theo, Luna was basically all he had as he was an orphan even before he knew of his magic
but Luna’s family kinda adopted him almost since Burr and Luna were so close they had become like siblings
but despite that, she’s kind of a bad influence mischief wise
even so, they both hate bringing attention to themselves and often to try to stay as neutral as possible in the eye of the public, but they share their true opinions to each other in private
overall, they’re hella close sometimes too close
Luna was the one to introduce Theo to Aaron and they all are a cool friend group
even though poor Luna is a third wheel
Ah, yes. young love ft. competition
Burr always makes it his goal to be at the top of the class
and Theo just happened to be his top competition
before he met her, he hated her because she always made it so hard to keep up and maintain the number 1 title
they would always glare and tease each other when they made eye contact in the halls or in shared classes
but once Luna formally introduced Theo to him and they set aside their little competition, they really clicked
Aaron had never felt more alive when he talked to Theo
it’s all very domestic and private since they both hated the notion of PDA

Book Review: Carry On: The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow
Author: Rainbow Rowell Publisher Information: Macmillan | October 08, 2015 Format: Paperback; First Edition Genre/s: Young Adult, Contemporary, Fantasy Page Count: 528 Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.
BOOK SUMMARY (as seen at the back) Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen. That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right. Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here--it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS When I first saw Carry On displayed at our local bookstore, I almost cried. I knew of it because I previously read Fangirl and wanted to know more about the characters Cath wrote about. (A drarry inspiration also gave this book plus points for me.) I loved the cover of the book, loved the size of the book. I just loved it. Fangirl didn’t really give anything away for Carry On but the snippets were enough to give me enough hype for this book. (Enough to make me buy three so far.)
WHAT HAPPENED? Simon Snow returns for his final year at Watford, a magical school in England. During this time, Simon learns to accept his reality of being the most powerful magician alive. As the Chosen One, he’s set to defeat the Insidious Humdrum, a magic-eating monster that has been running around England. He meets a surprising ally in Basilton Grimm-Pitch, his roommate and antagonist, as they uncover the mysteries of Watford and Baz’ deceased mother, the previous headmistress of Watford, and truth behind the Insidious Humdrum.
THE CORE This is a cute love story but also a book about desire, the consequence of it, and the power of simply letting go.
WHERE IS HERE? The book is set in present-time (contemporary) featuring Watford and its surrounding magical communities. The World of Mages is simply a distinction of the magickal community compared to the non-magic community. The setting is very stereotypical England which various magic folk - numpties, dragons, etc.
As the magical boarding school is not a new concept, and because the story is set in present time, it’s fairly easy to imagine the setting of Carry On. The border concept is Harry Potter meets Camp Half-Blood --  or at least that was how I saw it.
WHO ARE YOU? Simon Snow/Oliver Salisbury is the main protagonist of Carry On. As Chosen One, he affords to win battles that comes with his power with very little effort, but it seems that his naivety closely compensates for it. He appears to be very confused or lost at times, and sometimes obsessive towards his belief that Baz is a vampire and that he is out to kill him [Simon]. I think this makes him hard to like for some people. It can be frustrating to get to know someone who is naive and oblivious and seems lost all the time. But he’s also a person with a big cross to carry. Imagine being so powerful but be unable to control your magic. Imagine a monster equally powerful that is always out to get you. Imagine putting the very few people who actually cares for you at risk just by being the Chosen One. He’s the most powerful magician but he also seems powerless in a lot of areas.
Tyrannus Basilton Grimm-Pitch is Simon’s renowned nemesis. He is cocky but smart, as his aunt puts him. He shares an antagonistic relationship with Simon that shifts within the course of the story. He is also very, very gay.
The Mage (Davy) is the headmaster of Watford, the head of the World of Mages (Hence, the title “The” Mage) and is the only one Simon shares a familial relationship with. He was the one who got Simon from the world of Normals when he “set off” his magic and introduced him to the World of Mages. He endorsed Simon as his heir so Simon can attend Watford.
Penelope Bunce is Simon’s best friend. She is immensely intelligent, always top of their class. She is also the brains of her and Simon’s duo when they’re off saving the world.
EVERYTHING AT ONCE Carry On is a very easy read, language-wise. It’s written simply, targeted towards a younger audience and is fairly easy to understand. It may be hard to follow for some as the way the book is presented is like you’ve been reading it a while and that it needed to catch you up to what had happened before. (Think recaps in first episodes of sequel seasons of any story-driven TV series.)
The book also showcases multiple POVs that gives you a glimpse of other perspectives involved in the books many arcs. The central arc is of Simon’s battle with the Humdrum. The secondary arc is of the war between the Old Families (Baz’s Family included) and The Mage. The tertiary arc is the mystery behind the death of Natasha Grimm-Pitch (Baz’s mom). These arcs tie together at one point but plenty are left unsaid and unanswered in the arcs apart from the central arc. (Did they target the Headmistress or the babies in the nursery? Does Simon figure out who his parents are eventually? Does he not experience any sense of loss from not knowing who they are?) The different POVs gives the reader snippets of what is happening to the people involved in these arcs.
The book features a refreshing take on the whole “Chosen One” trope - Simon being a mess of a magician despite being the most powerful one alive. Most of the time, I would wonder how a chosen one is chosen and this book gives us an angle that makes a lot of sense -- that he has a lot of power means there’s a point in the universe that lost a lot of power as well. How people make magic in this world is not new to me. The whole putting magic into your words is reminiscent of Lark’s magic in Amy Harmon’s The Bird and the Sword. It places magic as a skill, a power that not all have, but also tying it with words and phrases that are common. It makes sense. It feels closer than how fiction usually feels.
Rainbow Rowell said that this book is what she felt that she somewhat owed to her characters in Cath’s (Fangirl) fanfiction so it’s understandable that the book widely focused on the development of Simon and Baz’ relationship. That’s not to excuse where the book lacks, but shows why it has been written as it has.
ALL THAT I AM; ALL THAT YOU WERE This corner of the review is for me and my spazzing over this book (and ask the others, I have SPAZZED). I love this book so much. I consider Simon and Baz my sons. Simon, my unlabelled little child and Baz, my gay son. I love them both. I love their relationship and how it got to that point. I love this book because it’s a gay one. I love this book because, yes they are two males who happened to fall in love. IT JUST HAPPENED. And that that’s not the only interesting part of their characters.
Carry On is a love story. It’s a coming-of-age love story where the conflict is anchored from a deeper and far darker past. I personally believe that this has been executed wonderfully.
My only issue with the book is how some details seem so unnecessary. The mystery of Natasha Grimm-Pitch felt very staged and mostly a token to reach from [Simon+Baz = Enemies] to [Simon+Baz = Friends, and so on]. This is a disservice to Natasha’s character, like she died only to bring her son closer to his long-time crush.
I also would have done without Agatha (Simon’s ex-girlfriend and Penelope’s other friend). She seemed to only be present to stir some drama in the group’s dynamic and doesn’t service the plot to move forward at all. (I would say she’s a bottleneck - but maybe that was the point.)
As far as the other arcs go, there’s not a lot of closure in this book. But in spite of these shortcomings, Carry On is still an entertaining and refreshing book to read. (Especially to those who love YA and Magic.)
THE FINAL SCORE 3.5 out of 5 stars. This book is a personal favorite of mine, but I did find that there were elements that were lacking and some characters and sub-plots that strayed too far from the central arc (and it quite unnecessary in my opinion). While we had closure from the central arc, there wasn’t a lot of closure with the other arcs. x, CLAUDE
