Although I do want to add, if you're someone who relates to my feelings about "Winning at being a man" (or a similar sentiment!) and often copes/deflects/expresses themselves with humor, it's important to take a step back and remember Why "Winning at (an abstract concept)" is such a funny thing to say in the first place!

The joke is rooted in the same vein of, "Getting a good grade in therapy, something reasonable to want and possible to achieve".

It's an absurd premise, that entails you having an unrealistic goal and setting out to achieve an impossible task.

Using my example: You can be a good man. That is within your control. You cannot Win at being a man. Winning implies measuring yourself against and outdoing someone else. Which, on paper, you Can do. But in performance, you're measured Not Only by yourself, and your own standards of manhood -- you're also measured by forces outside of and beyond yourself, of which you have no control over (see: no control over whether or not you Do "Win". You're subjected to whatever standards these forces Have, which again, goes back to it being an unrealistic goal and impossible task).

And, the most important takeaway, even if it sounds cliché -- the people who will see you as you are, just do. They respect you. They love you. They Know You. You didn't have to earn that. You didn't have to win it.

have you heard that jordan peele said steven yeun's character is the one that has the most in common with him. have you thought about how most of his cinematic career has been built around discussions of race and the traumas that come from racism. have you thought about how any media handling real and personal topics is a sort of emotional self-disembowelment on the part of the creator. have you thought of the glory and horror of being Seen. have you screamed

Have I? HAVE i. Have I thought about how Peele has discussed being objectified and tokenized on set, especially early in his career? Have I thought about what it's like to suffer real-life trauma in a space created for make-believe? Buddy, I haven't thought about anything else for days!!

I think one thing that makes this movie so visceral to me is that it's an exploration by a great popular artist on the human cost of making popular art. The link between the auteur and the cult leader--both are people consumed & defined by stories, people who are compelled by a narrative and feel an urge to spread that narrative to an audience.

And I am really impressed by how hard Peele seems to work to reject the cult leader in himself as best he can -- to make art that enriches the lives of ALL THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT. Every interview is about how collaborative and present he is as a director. Obsessed with this Q&A for many reasons but this moment sticks with me:

KEKE PALMER: There would be moments where we’re going through different parts of this script, this story, from when we first rehearsed to when we were actually on set, or when we had an idea that happened that morning. I would be listening, my head would be down, I’d be listening to what Jordan’s saying, I’m like, man this is deep. And I look up and there’d be just this one little tear falling. Man, this brother’s deep. JORDAN PEELE: I’m not afraid to cry as a director. KP: And he’s chill! He’d be like, “That’s what happens” and tears are falling. I’m like, “Are you all right?” But he keeps going and he’s like “Yeah, yeah. So that’s the thing.” And then he just walks out.

To me, that reads as a person who is NOT JUST super smart and deep and creative etc but who is also aware every moment of how lucky he is to be doing what he's doing, and who is not ashamed of his own reaction to that gratitude. What's to be ashamed of? It's incredibly fun! He is having an amazing time! He's hanging out with people he likes and respects and coating actors with goop in the esophageal tube! What a job!

I wonder if, to be that thankful and that aware (and that collaborative), you have to have experienced the flip side; if you have to have been Jupe, at least for a little while. I wonder if the process of -- to some extent -- commodifying your own suffering (as capitalism practically demands that artists do in order to survive as artists) leads, almost inevitably, to a moment where you think, "I survived this horror and became a Star because I am the main character of reality: I am more special than other people, I have a special ability to communicate, I have a special destiny." That is a powerful story and a seductive one, but if you don't leave it behind, it will eat you and the people around you alive.

It seems to me like an extension of what Peele is exploring in Us--the notion that your contentment is entangled with someone else's suffering. Why you? Why not the person with all your qualities who for whatever reason never ended up where you are? Especially for creators with marginalized identities, right? "Am I occupying a space that should belong to someone else?" You can avoid that question by deciding that you have special individual qualities that make you the Chosen One, as Jupe does. Or you can accept that the question will always haunt you, that luck (LUCKY THE FINAL HORSE??) has no logic, and you try to spread your luck out and open your space up to as many other people as you can. Which you see Peele doing all the time! Gah!!

CRYING I JUST REALIZED I FORGOT SOMETHING IN MY HEADCANONS ASK GAH /LH Hear me out. Purring phones. Not in the usual cat-purr way, of course, but more like a soft hum/vibration from their inner mechanisms, making it come out as more of a "vrr" sound than a "prr" if that makes sense. And and.. cord tail. Ik I'm not the only one with this headcanon but I wanna add it anyways because it's so silly. They gotta charge back up SOMEHOW.. probably. Most phone guys would probably hide them in their pants, though, partially due to annoying kids tugging on them and such. I'd also assume that they need some way to eat/drink, since their bodies are still primarily human. Despite being partially machine, they'd probably still need at least the BASIC necessities a normal human would so that they don't just keel over and die or whatever. I personally always just imagined them having either a little slot that can open up for them to stick a straw in, OR that their dials are hinged and can sorta open up for them to eat (considering they still have skulls in there and all, it's not hard to image that they have SOME sort of mouth left.. in a way), and that they stay shut via a little clip of sorts. Kinda like opening a door or hatch in a way?? I personally imagine them having like.. barcode tattoos (likely including their model and date of creation) either on their backs or the back of their necks. Plus the Afton Robotics AR either indented into their phone heads or stuck onto them like a sticker or paint. They'd likely also have maintenance panels in the backs of their heads that can be unscrewed whenever they need some wiring fixed up. Steven would also likely feel some touch aversion - especially with those he doesn't trust nor have at least some vague semblance of a bond with - which is mostly due to his traumatic past but doesn't really know WHY he's so iffy with touch. Despite being a Gen 1 phone guy, who're mostly if not entirely AI (based on what I remember and the Wiki, I may have to check again), he'd probably still have certain instincts ingrained into his brain (or, well.. his CPU, I guess). He'd probably be pretty touch starved, though, and if you get him to trust you enough, he would probably love a good hug or for someone to gently hold the sides of his head (since he lacks cheeks to cup and all, ofc). Can't you tell how totally sane and normal I am about phone guys (especially Steven)? /j -🍆

Okay, hear me out. Both Eddie and Steve both don't realize they like guys, specifically each other, until the Spicy Six decides to let loose and get drunk at Steve's. Robin is gigging with Argyle, Jonathan, and Nancy when Steve and Eddie start making out.

Robin: Steve!

Steve: *pulling away* What? God, Robin. Oh, yeah, Eddie said that if we say it's not gay before, then it's not gay. It's not gay, Robin, Eddie said so. We're just making out as friends, Robin. Gah!

Eddie: I don't know, man, it felt a little gay. . .

Steve: Wanna try again? Just to be sure?

Eddie: Okay! Not gay!

Steve and Eddie proceed to make out again.

Robin: Steven!!

Steve: *pulls away with a whine* Baby, she's yelling at me.

Eddie: Shhh, baby, I won't let the mean bird yell at you anymore. Shoo, bird fly away.

Steve: *straddling Eddie's lap* Why do you think that, big bird?

Summary: The Moon boys need to figure out who else is with them. And you needed to figure out why the hell you’re eating this pasta alone.

You couldn’t understand whether you should be pissed, sad or embarrassed. Possibly all of the above if you were being honest with yourself.

If the walk of shame from your table to the cashier of the restaurant weren’t enough, the fact that you ate both meals alone while the other customers stared occasionally were. Maybe you really shouldn’t have pushed forward with his stare at you.

God what is wrong with me, I should’ve just shut up.

As you exit the restaurant’s door back to the less busy streets of London, you nearly jump at the passing bus that you missed. Chirsts, can this night get any worse??

Now, Jake on the other hand was internally freaking out as Steven and Marc went back and forth with one another in their flat.

“Mate, what date is it??” Steven paces back and forth while he places his tea back down on the table.

Marc switches and talks to Steven, “I- I don’t know! Tuesday?!” He frantically rubs his hair. Clearly, they were losing it again.

“Gah, Marc! There is someone else!!?” Steven switches back, grabbing the tea abrubtly and taking a swig. The tea said ‘calming’ but it wasn’t doing jack shit to calm him down.

“Well that is the only way we can explain it!”

“Who was that woman back there??”

They banter like a tennis match for what seemed to be forever. Marc constantly jitters and worries about what they’ve been doing while they were knocked out. Steven is on his fourth calming tea bag that, again, isn’t helping.

If it wasn’t for Jake feeling sorry for the guys, he would have stayed quiet. But alas, they poked his heart.

“Alright, alright, alright, Already!” Jake’s voice booms through the mirror nearby causing both Steven and Marc to interrogate.

Jake’s darker and less enthused features looked back onto them.

“Will you bozos just calm down before we go into cardiac arrest?” Jake pinches the bridge of his nose, not getting any reaction from the two other than an agape mouth. Shocked at the idea that there truly was another one. “I’m Jake-“

“AHA! That’s what that woman back at the cafe called up!” Steven basically booms out like a horn, making Marc tense up and look back at Jake in the reflection.

“That woman, back there was (your name). She is a fantastic person and I’m pretty sure we scared her or made her hate us. Thanks for screwing that up.”

Marc and Steven were visibly confused at the thought that their body was out and about with a girl. What if Layla saw? This was making things all too confusing.

“Sorry but, you’re going out with other women??” Marc points his finger at the reflection, “without our knowledge?” Steven adds flame onto the fire, “What if Layla saw us out there, hm? What if that just so happens!?” Marc was in a place one could understand. His wife and him had just began rekindling their relationship, and here was his new alter putting it on the line.

“You do know about Layla? Right?” Steven intervenes, trying to figure out how long Jake has been with them.

“I know about everything. Unlike you folk, I shut up when needed.” Jake turns around and shakes his head, “I also constantly save us when either one of you put us on the brink of death.”

Marc and Steven began putting two and two together, all that bloodshed in Cairo. In the streets of the moutain tops with Harrow. It was Jake.

“That doesn’t make it better. You should have told us.” Steven’s words make Jake glance back at them with a more understanding look upon his face.

He would have told them. He would have let them know about him and about how Khonshu is still controlling them but— you came. He did not want the pressure of only having you for certain times and when his alters found it appropriate. He wanted to shelter the relationship (platonic or otherwise) between the two of you. He couldn’t lose the only thing that made him feel sane, connected and humbled down. He just couldn’t lose you. And judging by the way Marc and Steven were infuriated by the thought, hiding himself and you was the best idea he had.

“I just… it isn’t easy.” Jake rubs the nape of his neck.

Marc wasn’t having it, “Easy?? What about my wife, pal?!” He nears himself to the reflection. “What is she gonna think when I disappear often again?? When she spots me with that woman??”

“Have fucking care on how you speak about her!” Jake nearly breaks the glass from the inside.

“I am just starting to get my life on track and you are fucking it up!” As the two fought, Steven stayed silent. He wanted to be angry, he adored Layla with all his heart and it felt like they were finally headed the right direction. But the woman’s eyes tainted his thoughts, how she genuinely seemed to care about them. How he couldn’t help but remember her in flashbacks as well, one way or another. Maybe she acted as Jake’s anchor. God knows any one of them needed a guide.

“Sorry lads to interject but-“ Before Steven could calm their nerves, a doorbell chimes.

You weren’t sure whether confronting Jake was the best thing to do tonight. But, you wouldn’t be able to sleep otherwise. Yeah, you had work tomorrow but your mental heath was important too.

You didn’t want to get angry, truly you didn’t. But as your feelings cloud your better judgement, all you knew was one thing: You showed a romantic side of you and he blew you off. Whether or not that was the case didn’t matter to you.

So as the lift takes you to the shared floor you and Jake had, you promptly made your way to his door. Ironic how you were just here a few hours ago with fluffy nonsense, excited to go to the movies, while now you’re here with anger and embarrassment.

As your fingers press the bell, instead of knocking, you couldn’t help but hear the chatter inside die down.

“Let me fucking front.” Jake was adamant on letting them give him control, “She is going to be expecting me.”

“Maybe she shouldn’t.” Marc spits back at him. “I have to let her down, I can’t risk losing Layla just cause of her.” The man couldn’t help but villainize you, he had the woman of his dreams with him again and his alters crush wasn’t going to ruin it.

“Marc, you better fucking not!”

Marc pays no mind, he unlocks the door, opening as he comes face to face with you.

As if by sudden magic, he halts in his tracks. She was an absolute gem, alright. He didn’t know if Jake was influencing his thoughts as he stared at you. But he couldn’t help but think, If they were considered to be the moon, you were the goddamn sun. Maybe Jake’s thoughts were influencing him because his angry demeanor disappears. She was no Layla, but she wasn’t an enemy either.

Before he could speak, she begans voicing out her distaste.

“I was at the damn restaurant looking like a damn idiot…”She pushes past Marc and enters the flat, you didn’t have any sense of boundaries or calmness right now. “…Having the damn staff and fellow customers shoot sad glances at my damn face!” Her words slowly picked up the pace and volume.

“Listen-“ Marc manages to speak but gets cut off again.

“No! You listen, Jake.” That name sounded so vulgar, Jake felt his chest pang. Her feet brought her near him, while her finger was pointing to Marc’s chin. “I tried-, fucking tried, to hide my feelings for you because it would put our friendship on the line!”

Marc was taken aback and so was Steven, but no one was more taken than Jake. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. You were openly admitting you liked him, like it was no big deal. And he couldn’t even properly react.

“…But, leaving me there? I mean I know I wasn’t being sly about the movie date but come the fuck on!” Your entire face was slowly turning red, you didn’t verbally tell him you liked him—but the entire movie date idea was a dead giveaway. “And puttin’ on a fake accent just so you could leave and forget your cap??” You grab his cap from your pocket and clasp it in his hands.

Tears were slowly welling up in your eyes and Marc couldn’t really communicate because he had no idea how to. His ‘putting her down’ idea slipped away because now he could see that Jake and you truly had a bond. For what its worth, a romantic one, it seemed.

He didn’t want to give Jake the power again because it could make more trouble. But, goddamn, you looked so hurt he felt compelled to.

“…you….” Slowly, you stepped back, “…You could have just told me you didn’t feel the same way.”

That was it. The words that made Jake leave the backseat and take control, yet again. “Angelita, no. No no no no.” His arms coo you in and push you into his chest, you had no other choice than to rest on him. Tears flooding his sweater as you hands ball up on his chest.

“I had no idea you.. you felt that way.” He places his chin on your head, “Angelita, please- You have no idea how much you make me feel.” Jake blurts out, no regret whateoever. ‘Feel’ implied a lot of things, but for Jake it meant the general sense. He finally knew what emotions were, with you. He finally understood what Marc and Steven felt when they were around Layla. All in all, he felt at home. He wanted you to understand he felt the exact same way. To see those pretty eyes fill with joy rather than tears.

“Don’t lie to me-“ You sniff into his chest, “Why’d you have that fake accent? Why’d you leave, huh?” Your voice was faltering but it didn’t matter.

“Its… more complicated.” Jake sighs as his fingers rub small circles on your arm and cheek. He wasn’t ready to share it all, heck he wasn’t even ready for his feelings to spill yet here we are.

But you were conflicted, you may have heard him say he felt the same but you weren’t sure. As much as you wanted to hug him, kiss him even— you were frozen with your own thoughts.

Then, the door unlocks. Showing a curly beauty with the deepest chocolate eyes. Your head snaps to the direction and immediately shake at the thought. Jake wasn’t ready to face Layla, he never was. But it was too late.

“Marc?”

The discography of Sleigh Bells (the band) is so Gary King-coded to me. First album (Treats) reminds me of his obsession secondary school (it even describes having a best friend who gets straight-A grades). The album after, Reign of Terror, is all about feeling ashamed and hopeless...the most uplifting song from it is "Comeback Kid," which reminds me of the persona Gary tries to put on.

The third album, Bitter Rivals, has this chorus in the opening track: "you are my bitter rival, but I need you for survival." It gives me 'how do I define my worth if not in comparison to you' vibes (cough Gary and Steven cough cough). Also, the first lyric is "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times!" What better describes Gary's first attempt at the Golden Mile, huh????

I don't know their 4th and 5th albums very well, but the most recent album, Texis, is just...so Gary. Especially "SWEET75" and "Locust Laced." Some Texis songs are a little more hopeful, too, which makes me think of Gary in the epilogue :)

Gah. GAH. Anyway. If you want to feel devastated listen to Reign of Terror and Texis. If you want to feel like there's a boombox exploding inside your brain (positive) listen to Treats and Bitter Rivals

Hi Hello it's midnight for me and I just finished watching Steven Universe and the movie (I haven't watched Future yet- gonna do that this weekend) so now I have thoughts

Spoilers for Steven Universe below the cut!

First of all: I'm kicking myself repeatedly for waiting so long to watch it cause HOLY- 😭🥰 IT WAS SO GOOD!!! I wasn't sure I was gonna be into shows like this (Wasn't massively into Adventure Time- don't get me wrong, it was cute as hell and funny but just kinda..eh?) But I finally gave it a shot and WOW!

My favorite gem is still Garnet; I just- I adore her. She's wise, funny, the whole Sapphire and Ruby ship is so cute ("They were my favorite couple!"- Bismuth my blacksmith queen) and just-GAH! I love how excited she got over fusions and just how lovely she is all around!

My second favorite is Peridot. I loved her- she is the cutest little green dorito EVA! The way she speaks, her mannerisms, her dynamic with Lapis (Who admittedly I still have mixed feelings on but generally I enjoy her alot)- it was all so freaking kfakjerakjkjrakjerkjekjr I can't get over how cute she is HELP!

Really- I found myself loving all the characters! Pearl is cute as heck, Amethyst is an icon (I loved that scene where she refused to put all her problems onto Steven and recognized he had so much on his plate already- it was truly such a growth moment and I'm beyond proud of her. Plus- Smokey Quartz is an icon), and STEVEN! He's a doll! I adore him so much!

As for Beach City- I don't think I have a non-favorite. Everyone is so charming and silly; and even when they were at their worst they managed to bring it back around. Lars becoming a space pirate and Sadie becoming a rockstar- the grandmother becoming mayor and Ronaldo being..well, Ronaldo; it was all so good! I really do love Greg aswell; that Comet song will be forever stuck in my head. Oh! And Connie! I adore Connie!

As for the movie....eh? Don't get me wrong, it was great- and I really like Spinel; but all the endless songs started to get a little much after a while 😅 There was some great ones like Garnet's return song True Love and Steven's Change song- and of course Other Friends and Drift Away are absolutely incredible. It was a good mix of great songs and....kinda meh songs but still incredibly pleasant to listen to. I had a great time. (I also really liked Happily Ever After but I think I prefer Natewantstobattle's version; the rock cover really gives it that extra oomph!)

The DIAMONDS! I kinda don't know how to feel about Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond. I get why she did what she did; it was clear as glass the home life she was living wasn't good to her- but the way she did it certainly wasn't the cleanest. I like how complex her situation is and how Steven navigated it. I also like how the diamonds were presented- not good gems but complex enough that they're enjoyable. (Not to be bisexual on tumblr but Yellow Diamond....👀)

Overall this was a great time all around! I don't know what I'm gonna watch next (post future), my sister and I are thinking either Owl House or Amphibia, but y'all are welcome to leave suggestions! This was a much needed comfort experience during an admittedly crappy time.

(Also I'm almost done with Season 2 of Vinland Saga and y'all it's absolutely incredible but so freaking SAD- ooooo, I got feelings but I'll share them all when I finish the last four episodes)

This is your gentle reminder to sit down and indulge yourself in something comforting! Especially if things are being tough right now- you deserve to treat yourself :)
