random note about king on that animation, i got really lucky with how simple his animation was and how clean my sketches were to begin with that i was able to do very minimal cleanup on what i had sketched (and add back. his horn. it's supposed to take place just after echoes of the past, Oops) and call it done that way instead of having to redraw the entire thing like i had to on his dad

first sketch > line cleanup > nearly final animation (i'd added slight eye movements last-second but otherwise that's the final)

I AM NOT AN ANIMATOR I AM JUST A HOBBYIST... #i animate like once a year... shits hard man.... but apparently when i do animate. its extremely good :) proud of that #even if i have an extremely unhinged way of animating #i don't have an animation program i draw everything individually frame by frame in photoshop #each character had their own psd file with the same background and every frame was its own group. twice. one for sketch one for colors #i do test takes with gifcam (there are literally 55 WIP gifs in my documents folder rn) by switching between layers and taking a 'frame' #and i compile in blender's video editor and to move things separately i save each character's frame in its own .png 'cel' #so luz was her own 'cel'. king was his own 'cel.' etc. and then i have to manually slide the lengths of the frames around #to match the right framerate. traditionally animation is animated at 24 FPS on 2's - so 12 frames a second. i go on 3s. 4 to slow down #anime-ass framerate. i'm insane apparently but its what i like to do #i dont understand real animation programs they have too many pieces but i DO understand photoshop and my funny brushes #imagine having Digital Programs and Still basically doing ye olde traditional animation method just in the computer #if im Just making a gif then i only use gifcam and switch between layers. like digital stop motion. somethings wrong with me

hm. it Does vary wildly, both depending on quality, how used to scribbling a thing i am, and how well the art-mojo is flowing! on a bad night, a simple sketch could take an hour while the same sketch on a good night could take 15 minutes

and it's also hard to say since i don't really keep track! for example, The First One in this collage is a more involved sketch and i suspect it took thirty minutes maybe? i remember having some Difficulties so maybe longer? trying to get size differences between multiple characters in the same sketch adds a Lot of time, as does making sure they interact properly. while the last one in the collage (the Nom) probably took closer to ten minutes

i know the Laughingstock in Aziracrow's outfits i belted out in, oh... an hour or three? it's really hard to say! i think it was several bc i was watching gomens at the time, and i think it got through a couple of episodes... clothes add a lot of time! but certain things that i thought i did Quickly took hours in reality, and i only notice when i look up and see the clock has Changed Drastically! i have a very loose perception of time!

it really just depends on my motivation & how used to drawing something i am. like scribbling Eddie takes a while, lots of guidelines and erasing and redrawing. but scribbling Barnaby? easy. takes me seconds in comparison. way less guidelines - i know where everything is and where it goes! drawing dragons takes even less time - This One was done in a Blink, and the only guides i used were head circle / snout circle / jawline.

#the Size of the sketch absolutely makes a big difference #like sketch comms are really tough since im drawing them at a Much bigger resolution #and it throws off the feel of the brush & i have to go about it in a drastically different way than what im comfortable with #because i want to provide the Best Resolution/Quality possible! #and then tiny sketches are easy and quick cause it's close quarters. cozy! #and im more accustomed to keeping my brushstrokes Tight and Short #but im slowly getting used to scribbling Bigger! #just today i realized i was automatically scribbling larger than i used to #good! higher quality! #it will translate into my comms hopefully! #i still have one left... ive been slowly chipping away at it #rambles from the bog #i think im underestimating the time... #bc i Do draw slowly i think #it usually takes a while! #unless im In The Zone and then im belting things out at lightspeed #like remember that glorious time period where i was posting every day often Twice a day and the queue was backed up for Days? #yeah.... me too.... #i am very rarely in the Zone #its tough to think and its tough to Create and the process is so much!!! #it takes Energy i rarely have! so that slows it down too... #but yeah my 'process' is very much Not a process lmao #in the wise words of hobie brown: i dont believe in consistency #its not in my nature! to my detriment more often than not!

i may still be recovering from the psychic damage done to me by my high school art teacher but at least it taught me early that art teachers dont always know wtf theyre talking about

Having three concurrent notebooks at a time will do that #I'm used to only having two at a time but I think three is going to become my new regular #One for sketches - studies and random concepts and scribbly comics to be cleaned up in SAI at a later time #One for more finished paper art - not necessarily Fancy but lineless y'know lol a bit more proper as far as I'm concerned #And then a true free for all lol anything allowed! Basically a stream-of-consciousness captured to page #For now I've got the latter two covered I'm currently vetting the slightly-more-focused lined notebook #It was from a bit ago and I was being silly at the time haha but the first one is from a new brand I'm testing out #It feels good! It's grippy but not in a scratchy way and it accepts graphite and pigment well #I haven't tested pen bleed yet tho that'll be next on my list #The second is an old standby - not my favourite but one that is very easy to acquire and I know what to expect of it #It's also the same as my free-for-all notebook but that's really neither here nor there lol - I'm not likely to mix them up #The only thing I've really noticed so far is the new brand takes a bit more cleaning because its margin line bleeds a bit more than normal #It's not bad but I can see it getting annoying - pros and cons #The second two are just normal sona thoughts #I miss my spider. I've looked out at where I buried them every day since but it feels more manageable #It feels more approachable like I'll be able to talk about it with the sellers when we're able to go to see them #I do hope they don't think less of me for it... #And then the last haha - my Vargas immunity is currently basically zero so any outside mention of them is overwhelming #I got about three lines into a fic and had to stop lol - I still really want to read it!
