tucked away in the 2nd verse of "Julian" is quite possibly my favorite Carly Rae Jepsen lyric: "more than just lovers."

The version of this phrase we're used to is "more than just friends," which implies that becoming lovers is a step up from friendship, that it's a stronger connection. Carly's version flips this idea on its head. What elevates the romance she had with this guy was the friendship they shared. They were soulmates, romantically and platonically. That's why she's "forever haunted by [their] time" together — the ache she feels is twofold.

It's such a quick, blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment. She does not call attention to it, just says it like it's fact. Of course your lover would be one of your closest friends. Of course that is as important if not more important than the romantic and sexual connection.

Of course, this is something demisexual and/or demiromantic folks know innately. Also ace-spec folks, and aro-spec folks too. Different forms of love matter more to different people. For some, romance will never play a big role in their life. The platonic bonds they make will be just as strong as any typical romance.

I'm so not used to romance and friendship being treated as equally valuable components of a romantic relationship. It means so much to hear Carly state this like it's obvious.

i have a hard time even viewing it as redemption because to me going back to his family after they have done almost nothing to apologize themselves feels like a step back not a step forward even more so when the actions he took in my opinion were mostly justified just misinformed i’m not saying i think he did nothing wrong more just i don’t think what he had done was bad enough to warrant needing to be redeemed
