judging by the "fixes" they've applied to fern and i'm fairly sure also to a few other genes, they likely intend to flatten and generic-ify EVERY gene that does anything interesting with especially the top feathers portion of the wings. :/

#flight rising #the ridiculously strict standardization guidelines they seem to put every gene through recently are actively detrimental to looking good #i don't know why they can't seem to get the idea that different body shapes showing the same gene a little differently is a GOOD thing #rather than every single gene appearing to be the exact same flat pasted on texture. undel's book had a whole thing on that how'dthey forge #we like it when each dragon's shape does something a little unique with gene expression! it makes it worth actually having different breeds #i think whatever tone-deaf standardization guidelines they're following are likely also actively detrimental to ancient breed design creati #and might even be part of the reason why we haven't gotten any dragons with stuff like turtle shells for the secondary gene yet #because under the current personality-sucking apparent standardization guidelines they would not be allowed to try to adapt any modern gene #to a shell-backed dragon shape #because tweaking them to work on that shape and actually look good would be considered by their standards changing them too much #even though the difference on a majority of genes wouldn't be any greater than the difference between some genes on skydancer vs other wing #under the standardization rules they seem to follow they may literally not be allowed to design even any ancient dragons w/ nonwing seconda #much less with any truly mold-breaking shapes or concepts of wings. they seem to struggle just with figuring out how to apply it to feather #off the top of my had some wing-“wing”-and secondary gene area ideas that would be absolutely possible but i'm fairly sure they'd never do- #“feathers” are actually smaller membranous wings like a fractal. mane. elaborate peacock tail instead of wings. body fins. head frill. bell #throat fan. head crest. overlapping hard scalelike spines flattened into something like a spinosaurus crest. sailfin 2!. inorganic wings. #all of these things are entirely feasible and i have thought on how to adapt genes to them extensively but they would likely never do it #because peregrine-for example-would look perfectly fine-better even- applied to the trailing edges of overlapping armadillo plates #except fr's standardization rules seem to be so ridiculously strict that they would say it can only be on the trailing edge of a wing shape #they just seem to want every gene to be the exact same pasted on flat texture on everything even when it makes no sense on the dragon shape #and even when following that design principle actively looks worse. which it mostly does. it demands they suck the 3d out of everything. #so we end up with a game where every dragon looks like someone put a cutout of a texture on it and adapting it to the 3d shape is a “bug” #give us MORE breeds with anatomical features that cause small but consistent deviations in the depiction of genes! #not less! #it's the tundra butterfly dark manes all over again #we LIKE slight variety that makes sense on the dragon's unique shape! unique forms demand unique adaptations! not flattening! #undel wrote an entire section of an artbook about how patterns should be adapted to your subject's anatomy and shape how did they all forge #is this one of those corporate “to preserve our brand identity” things? is it a loud minority/“listening to the wrong feedback” thing? #it's gotten to the point that there's basically no point even scrying most breeds until at least a year after they come out #because inevitably they're going to abruptly “fix” every single gene that looks interesting and good

Vulture Grubs are Mimics

Adghsdjgsdg so - I was not expecting an actual Rain World Downpour dev to reblog my iterators are colonial organisms post.  Also they said that the brain organisms in iterators are named CoralBrain in the files so???  Is this??? Confirmation??  About my theory?? O.O

Anyway enough fangirling about that, onto more musings!  This time isn’t so grand as the iterators - me and my sis like talking about various rain world worldbuilding stuff (I’ve been coming up with fanfic ideas and I like bouncing ideas off of her in the car when driving her places), and today the topic of “what the heck are vulture grubs” came up!  

(Alongside the topics of “is symbiosis with the Rot possible” and “what would a large population of carnivorous slugcats need to survive in Metropolis” which yes are both related to the fanfic idea.)

Our first thought - and the theory that my sister supported for half the resulting debate - was that vulture grubs are just, you know, vulture babies.  They make lasers like king vultures when summoning vultures, and when distressed call for help and have adult vultures answer.  However, my sister also pointed out that vultures sometimes seem to eat the grubs, and while some species have cannibalism as a thing I’m kinda meh about the idea - it's an actual thing that happens in nature, yeah, but... well, meh.

So what are vulture grubs if not baby vultures?  Baby vulture mimics!  You know how some animals will imitate other, more dangerous animals to scare off predators?  That’s what the grubs are doing!  They’ve evolved to mimic baby vultures in order to discourage predators from eating them.  The structures on their heads vaguely resemble king vulture heads in shape, and the lasers are DEFINITELY a mimicry of the king vulture lasers.  The screech, too, is probably a mimicry - they sound like distressed baby vultures, and that along with the flashy laser light show draws vultures to the noise, which usually means that whatever big predator was attacking the grub is scared away in a panic!

Of course, sometimes that gets the grub eaten by the vulture, but it’d get them eaten a LOT less often by big predators, which would mean they’d survive for longer and in greater numbers than they would normally.

Yeah about that lol #They're still an absolutely gorgeous spider but there were two issues - the females (while gorgeous) don't have pedipalps #And pedipalps were basically the deciding factor of actually following through on this idea lol so fairly important #Okay fine well what about the males? Pfft #Have you seen Black Widow males? They are the goofiest little spiders ♪ And their pedipalps are round ♫ #So that was a very quick disqualification lol #So instead a tarantula and a jumping spider ♥ My favourite Jumper in fact! 💕 I like Brazilian White Knees too but just normal-like haha #Both have their own charms - BWKs have that classic spindly spider look while still being fluffy and cute ♥ #And I'm able to translate the shapes I've learned for his wings into that style of legs decently well so added bonus! #But Bold Jumpers have those quintessential buff Jumper front legs! They've got natural chibi proportions! #Plus that spooky back-pattern face hehe ♪ #And not to knock the BWK's chelicerae but you really can't beat that iridescent blue-green ♥ Not that it's featured here lol #But the important part is that both species have prominent pedipalps! So I'm happy with either hehe ♪ #As you can see here I haven't pinned down any specific clothes - I'd like to give him a proper wardrobe vs. Naga!Scriabin's nudity lol #A seamstress type creature requires a large number of outfits! #I do like the midriff & loincloth look hmm mix between practical and visual metaphor lol #Oh yeah and he's still shorter than Edgar regardless of species lol his center of gravity is lower #Not exactly difficult to find ways to be taller all the same haha

The wings are still very good #And the poses are silly lol #She is always real cute tho <3 #It does feel funny going back to her early doodles and trying to style-match - my style was much looser at the time #Which is part of why her hair looks so good - those swirls are wild! But it's hard to replicate now :0 #You can kinda see it in how hard and dark the lines are in her hair - before it'd basically be a scribble nest haha #Both have their aesthetic placement I just hrmm #I miss it a bit #There's something almost uncanny about trying to go back now - sizing maybe? Proportions? I'm not sure #She was always meant to have that chibi proportion big head and simplified body so maybe it's her neck being so visible that's throwing me?? #I do like the small collar tho!
