Not to start a fight but what our thoughts on people calling c!punz an abuser? I can’t decide how I feel about it. It’s an aurgment I’ve seen on Twitter with people using the logic that if you call c!sam an abuser for enabling/allowing c!Quackity’s torture then you have to apply the same logic to c!punz for enabling/allowing c!dream’s torture of c!lazar and c!vik. Deam, Punz and Sam apologists feel free to give me your thoughts on this I just genuinely want to know how people feel about this take.

one thing I love about the dsmp lore is that it's not always the "good guys" that win. the "villains" don't always get their rightful punishment. it's a nice balance that makes things seem a tad bit more realistic.

let's just look at c!Wilbur for example.

he did unforgivable things, treated the ppl who loved him like shit, and then blew up the country they all fought tooth and nail for. his death was both a victory and a loss for him, because in the end it was fully his choice to go through with it.

spending all those years in limbo was his great punishment, making him realize that not all his decisions were great. but even that didn't last forever, because he just got revived.

then hitting on 16 happened. just another awful thing connected to his name.

sure, the apologies were a nice thing - they would've been if they were genuine.

and then he just fucked off to Utah.

which means that (SPOILERS) if Dream and Punz do end up killing everyone on the server, he will be the only one safe, because he isn't there anymore. and does he deserve that ? after all the shit he's done, he will be the only one fully safe, living his best life in UTAH.

that doesn't seem like a very fair thing. and that's the beauty of it. because life is unfair.

If I see one more post about why C!Dream is not a villain, I will rage-

C!Dream is a complex character with an understandable motive, and his spiralings was very realistic and I can one hundred percent see why. He is a very morally gray, albeit leaning more toward black than white, character. It wouldn’t be fair if I just label him as THE villain, because perspectives exist, and in some member’s perspective, like Purpled for example, he’s definitely not as evil as he is in, say, Tubbo’s perspective.

But that doesn’t change the fact Dream was a horrible person.

Just because he had a understandable motive, that doesn’t mean the shit that happened in Exile is justified. That doesn’t mean Doomsday is justified. That doesn’t mean all the manipulation and all the lying are justified. That doesn’t mean what he and Punz did to Vikkstar and Lazarbeam is justified. That doesn’t mean what happened in prison was justified.

Especially Exile and Vikkstar & Lazarbeam ! Exile is for isolating Tommy so he can’t cause trouble, not for abusing and gaslighting him to near the point of fucking suicide ! And what happened to Vikkstar & Lazarbeam was completely unnecessary ! Dream and Punz did NOT need to kill them over and over and over just to test the Revival Book, that is cruel and several violations of human’s rights.

Conclusion : C!Dream fucking sucks and I wish Punz didn’t brought him back. I’m an enthusiast, not apologist. His motive makes him explainable, not justifiable or excusable, and if I ever somehow manage to rip the fabric of reality and teleport to the DSMP universe, the first thing I will do is find Dream to deck him.

… But he’s still a complex character and one of my favourites.

Anyway, if I miss a point or something, do remind me. I’ll probably edit this and add more character analysis in the morning, when my thoughts are actually coherent and I’m not writing something from pure spite and anger.

Sure, he never physically hurt them as far as we’re aware, but do you know how painful it is to watch your friend spirals and became the total opposite of how they were ? How helpless it feels when you realised your friend is too far gone and you can’t help them ? How guilty it is when you think of all the times you could reach out and stop them from turning out like this but you didn’t ? How badly that would take a toll on your mental health ?

But anyway, just because C!Dream is a horrible person, that doesn’t mean what happened in prison is okay. The whole obsidian cell with lava door and raw potato ? Yeah, that’s fine, I can get behind that, since it was his idea for prison to be like that. It’s just karma. What I meant is the torture part. Does he deserve it ? Depends who you ask. I personally think it was justified and deserved, but that still doesn’t make it okay.

As much as I’ve always admired the sheer creativity and kind attitude of the DSMP fandom, it’s nearly impossible to overlook the weird™ behaviour, regarding c!Primers in particular, and although it has been said countless times before me, I’d like to throw in my two cents. 

The uncomfortable and frankly gross phenomenon of Bowspam, coined by Poppytwt, which portrays a romantic and sexual relationship between c!Tommy and c!Dream, is the reason I made this post in the first place. Unfortunately, some content featuring c!Prime is rather predatory, which contradicts the original source and the whole point of their dynamic. For example, if you type “Discduo” in the Spotify search bar, you’ll most likely find multiple “Discduo / Bowspam” playlists instead, which is obviously very gross, and appears as if the latter was still normalised to some extent. As much as this tag is disturbing in general, the more details you learn about it, the more problematic it seems. 

Originally, Tadca was nothing but a collection of warnings, so that those who felt uncomfortable with abusive content, could simply block it, but Poppytwt claimed the tag, and that’s when things got actually weird™. It happened because some artists drew a couple of weird™ comics by pure accident, and it was used as a proof that all c!Prime enjoyers ship them. Andy never intended for Tadca to be twisted into something so heinous, and for this exact reason, he asked everyone to stop using the tag because of harassment, yet strangely enough, he was the one receiving harassment for something completely out of his control. Unfortunately, it wasn’t an exceptional case, as many other c!Prime enjoyers received death threats and harassment from c!Dream apologists, just for authentically depicting an abusive dynamic; pretending that c!Prime was paedophilic, and sending tons of harassment was easier than admitting that their fave wasn’t as good as they wanted to believe. Weirdly enough, Bowspam enjoyers never faced as much harassment as c!Primers, even though their content fully matched that definition. Plus, c!Trinity also received a good share of criticism because some people believed that it was a second wave of Tadca, except c!Punz got involved in it too. 

Furthermore, it’s important to note that the c!Prime dynamic offers real-life abuse victims a voice, and it’s utterly disrespectful to sexualise it, as it may discourage them from speaking out about their situation because of a fear of being misunderstood, due to constant victim blaming in the fandom, and a misconception that any kind of abuse outside of family, is sexual. Fiction does have an important impact on real life, and unfortunately, some people forget about that completely. We should also remember that while creating c!Prime content might help some people cope with trauma and is often inspired by their own experiences, some people still choose to be weird about it, which I find extremely disrespectful.

the staged finale was not a retcon

If everyone payed attention to c!Punz’s pov on the Dream SMP, then no one would be saying that the staged disc finale was a retcon.

I remember when I first joined the fandom, the first clip I watched was the disc finale. I remember hearing c!Dream mention that the prison was originally built for someone who wasn’t c!Tommy. That caught my attention and so I immediately started trying to figure out who it was built for. Then I stumbled across a clip of c!Dream talking to c!Punz. In this clip, c!Dream talked about how he and c!Punz needed to stage a betrayal, c!Dream would do something that no one would like him for, and that c!Dream would go far away for a while and would need c!Punz to keep an eye on the server. 

It was at this point that I thought it was rather probable that c!Dream wanted to be put in prison. It also helped that when discussing who would be put in the prison when it was first being built, c!Dream gave a description that really only fit c!Techno, or himself. This was independent of the staged finale theory here on tumblr, cause I didn’t have tumblr at this point. It was the first theory that I wrote down, that c!Dream wanted to be put in prison. And that c!Punz had never actually betrayed him. I wasn’t sure how likely this was cause why would he do that, but I knew it was a decent possibility and quite enjoyed this idea.

And I feel like it’s relevant to say that at the time I was figuring all this out, I wasn’t even sympathetic to c!Dream. Like I had been told about the Dream SMP by inniters, so I came into this with a bias against c!Dream. But I wanted to fully understand the lore, and that meant watching vods of as many povs as possible. And doing that led me to the staged finale theory and being a c!Dream apologist. 

Basically all this to say, cc!Tommy not knowing about the staged finale is not evidence that the staged finale was a retcon. There was plenty of proof that it was going to happen well before even doomsday even happened. It’s much more likely that cc!Dream deciding not to tell him about it so cc!Tommy could have a much more genuine reaction to finding out that the disc finale was staged. Much like how cc!Wilbur didn’t tell cc!Tommy that they had lost the L’Manberg election.

c!Dream and the Theory of Attachment

“They are not excuses, they are reasons”

Disclaimer:

I am doing this just for fun! I am a psychology student, but don’t claim to be an expert on the theory nor psychology as a whole (obviously lol). This analysis is inherently flawed because of the focus on just one theory. It shouldn't be viewed as a serious thing, just a practice task I guess. 

Because of the lack of information about c!Dream’s past (especially family & childhood, which are important to the theory) I am forced to make some assumptions and guesses based on the current behaviour of c!Dream. It is also important to remember that I consider myself a c!Dream apologist, so my view of him might be different.

Another thing I need to mention is that, given the nature of DSMP, sometimes it’s hard to say which part of c!Dream is c!Dream and which is cc!Dream. I want it to be clear that I don’t want to speculate on cc!Dream’s relationships nor psychoanalyse him.

Anyway the theory of attachment is one of my favourite parts of psychology, so I decided to combine it with the complexity of c!Dream :D Hope you enjoy the read! (and pls don’t take it as a serious diagnosis or something for whatever reason lmao - it’s all just for fun ^^)

All talk below is about characters!!!

Why do I think he has not developed a safe attachment in the first years of his life properly?

    I think Dream had no ‘safe haven’ figure in his life. No one was always there when he was exploring the world and trying to find his own place in it. Why? No idea. We don’t know what happened during Dream’s childhood, but I think that by looking at his current behaviour we can theorise.

    He is very childish under all that ‘villain persona’. Dream doesn’t seem to trust easily. He keeps people at an arm’s distance, even his closest allies – just look at Punz. Does he know the plan? Yes. But are we sure he knows the whole plan? I’m not sure. Dream doesn’t share his pain with him either – says that what happened in prison was just a mistake, but a non significant one.

    He is also not… very… smart. The famous ‘he can’t read maps’ post comes to mind. He is clever and has a lot of ideas, but he doesn’t think through all of his plans. His big plan hinges a lot on the reactions of others to his persona (Tommy especially). He usually goes with the first thing he comes up with – it’s more about survival instinct than a smart idea.

    Another point is him relying on anger and violence a lot. Look at the conflict with El Rapids – he had trouble forming his thoughts and opinions clearly when under a lot of emotions and distress – or even the Spirit speech during which he turns to anger fairly quickly yet again.

    He wants to be seen as threatening, dangerous. The question is – is it just for his persona? Just for his plan? Or is it something he can’t really control? Is he able to hide them as well as he does later? Or is it something he learns with time?

    Moreover, look at how he reacts to the loss of someone/something he attaches to (or that he feels is under a threat)! The already mentioned Spirit incident – at first he tries to control his emotions, tries to get the leather (the thing he is attached to) back, but with each moment he loses a bit of his cool and the constant taunting makes him snap. He is afraid. Afraid of losing the last memory of his horse, the last thing he has from them. He wasn’t there when they died, he had to trade for the leather, he isn’t willing to let it go. And sure he says he doesn’t care, but… Really? Do we really believe the guy, who traded one of the disks for it, would just not care about Spirit? I find it doubtful.

    He seems to be deeply afraid of being betrayed. Especially after the fiasco with Sapnap and George – he is still hurting, still feeling unsure in some way. They were his attachments, people he trusted. And probably still are in some way. He most likely doesn’t want to go through that again – look how hesitant he is around Techno, someone that is kind and friendly to him. Dream doesn’t trust Techno. Not at first. I would say the moment he begins to trust him is the prison stay, when they are forced to spend time together and Techno witnesses Dream at his worst (maybe including a breakdown or two). The proof for that attachment (or the beginning of one?) is the time Quackity comes back – Dream is afraid of Quackity, but he is willing to protect Techno. He stands against Q and tries to bargain with him. He cares about Techno, and doesn't want him to go through Limbo. In turn, Techno trusts Dream, wants to help him. And yet Dream is still surprised when Techno comes back for him.

    Let’s get back to Punz for a bit – Dream could have someone by him all the time, could make a plan that takes less from him, that expects less from him and yet his priority is making sure Punz stays hidden, stays safe. He wants to make sure the only person that was and still is by his side stays safe. Punz has been with Dream since the first conflict. They know each other, and trust each other. They themselves say it’s more than a job now, that their money is less important than what is between them. And even after the prison Dream still wants to make sure his ally is safe – he could (should?) want someone friendly by his side, but he isn’t willing to have that if it means Punz is in danger.

    That brings me to the next question – why do I think Dream has developed an insecure/avoidant style of attachment?

    Because of how he behaves – both around others and by himself (not that we ever saw him by himself). One of the characteristics of this attachment style is the over controlled emotion regulation. Sounds familiar? Dream is the king of explaining why he shouldn’t be mad, why he shouldn’t hurt – look at the prison arc! How does he act so unbothered, so detached from the torture? Sure, we can see some cracks (especially during Techno’s stay and Bad’s account of the sandwich story), but he is scarily good at compartmentalization as well, which could tie in with the tendency to over control his own emotions.

    Dream not only denies his own feelings and hurts, but also seems to misinterpret (or misunderstand) the feelings of other people – look at the break up of Dream Team again. It’s almost like Dream doesn’t understand why George could be hurt. In his mind, such a thing is not a big deal. It’s something you shake off and go on with your day. Something he does many times.

    Another part of this attachment style is the perception of self as successful and others as unreliable or untrustworthy. It could tie in with the lack of a safe attachment during childhood – the need to fend for yourself. Dream does seem to portray those traits. It’s hard for me to determine which parts of his ‘I am the Admin of the server, the leader, the god’ are a part of his villain persona and which ones are the traits of the actual character, but I think even the fact of his persona (the one that is supposed to make others fear him, to make the plan work) being like that might suggest some things. Speaking of the plan – it’s worth it to mention the way Dream seems to think he is the only person who can make the server good again. He is the successful, powerful one, others can’t do that.

    Some of you might probably think “Okay Kiuda, but what does it all actually mean? Why does it matter?”

    Well, the Theory of Attachment was formed based on studies about children. What does it all mean? It means that we have some clues (guesses more like) about what Dream’s childhood was like. And what it all suggests is a lonely childhood. Either with no parental figure or with no figure that was willing (or able) to be there as support while he was getting to know the world. This might be why he tried to get closer to Puffy – maybe he desperately wanted to feel close to a mother-figure, maybe he tried to get close to Bad as well – the father of his best friend. Maybe that’s why he sounded so defeated when he told him to stay in the cell. Maybe it was another failed attempt at finding that healthy attachment, that healthy relationship.

    Ultimately it all could mean one thing – Dream is lost. He needs someone to show him that trusting others is okay, that people are ultimately good and that he doesn’t have to (and shouldn’t) believe he is the only one able to save everyone.

can I just say that C!Dream apologists scare me. Like, I met somebody IRL who genuinely thought that because Tommy bothered him at the beginning of the series, he wasn’t a villain and everything he did was justified. They truly believed that because a CHILD was annoying without really realizing the effect his behavior was having(y’know, like a normal kid) on Dream and his friends, it was completely justified for C!Dream to become obsessed with him, learn everything he could about him, and craft multiple kinds of personalized torture for YEARS. He ruined everything about Tommy’s life, and led to his, Punz’s, Tubbo’s, Jack’s and Dream himself’s death. Because a CHILD didn’t understand the impact of his actions. Like EVERY. CHILD.

I see your tweet about how the CCs are afraid of making their characters villains and antagonists, and it made me remembered something.

When C!BBH was telling a newbie about the server, he talked down about C!Tommy, and then he showed his character being sad about C!Dream's treatment (ie abuse) during the prison. The most rabid and annoying fans started calling him an abuse apologist!

Like, his character doesn't have any implied history with C!Tommy... nor does he know about exile and what went on. But he does have a history with C!Dream, and he was a guard at the prison and knew what C!Dream was going through.

It was just... yikes.

some parts of the fandom are quite literally holding on to the "ctommy is the main character of the dsmp" idea with their TEETH. and that means any character that sides with cdream, sides against tommy, MUST be the worst guy ever.

because ??? how could they forget exile ??? yknow the worst thing that ever happened on the server (not the prison) the worst crime dream ever committed (not human experimentation) HOW COULD THEY NOT KNOW !!!!

(despite the fact that tommy told like. three people and never went into explicit details about it--especially never told characters like bbh who ctommy doesnt have ANY relationship with, but for some reason bbh, purpled, punz, etc are ??? supposed to know somehow idk)

19. What are come of your favorite pieces of c!Dream animations/songs/other types of video/audio content?

The Old Days animatic by Knp lives rent free in my brain. Watching that animatic changed the trajectory of my life I'm so serious it's so aklsjdhsgajksdshass the way it so perfectly represents c!dream's longing to return to a simpler past? when he could laugh and have fun with c!george and c!sapnap???? the way you can see when c!dream stops smiling in the animatic?? aughhhh c!dream team my c!dream team you are a wound that never stops aching.

22. If you had all the time, resources, and skills to create your ideal piece of c!Dream fan content, what would it be?

I've talked about it before, but genuinely You and I Drink the Poison From the Same Vine (my theoretical c!dreambur semi-canon compliant fic that I talked abt in the post linked). I think about it all the time. I would love to just... have the commitment needed to write this long fic that examines canon through the lens of one non-canon element being added.

Also, it'd be really really fun to write interactions between c!punz and c!wilbur (where c!punz doesn't understand why c!dream keeps c!wilbur around and does what he wants and c!wilbur holds his connection to c!dream over c!punz's head like a taunt).

Uh, other than that, I have a slide show about c!dream that I never finished. I started making it with the goal of presenting it to my non-c!dream sympathetic irls haha

24. When/how did you become a c!Dream apologist?

Okay, this is going to get long and I may get into way more detail than I need to, so buckle in because this was quite the journey for me.

So, I didn't get into the fandom until around august-september of 2021. However, I had multiple irls who were really into the dsmp in late 2020-early 2021. And, uh, they're very very non-sympathetic to c!dream. (also believers in the l'manburg mythos, but we are not getting into that...) anyway, I heard a lot about the dsmp from an outside perspective during my time of not being in the fandom. And this included hearing about the exile arc (with one hilarious instance where my friends did not specify it was rp so for a moment I thought cc!dream was just a really really bad dude 💀) and hearing about how horrible c!dream was how evil he was etc etc.

In typical "I am not invested in this fandom at all but my dear friend is" fashion, I just agreed with them. All of my info came from hearing them talk abt something they were interested in, so why would I disagree?

Anyway, flash forward, like, half a year, and I begin watching the manhunts. I got really into them and ended up reading some non-dsmp fics. And then everything spiralled and I got sucked into the fandom. I remember reading some c!dream redemption fics, and I was really enjoying it, but I still didn't consider myself an apologist. Afterall, my entire first impression of him was how horrible he was through my friends.

Anyway, I don't have an exact timeline, but it wasn't until I actually followed someone from dreblr that I started fully embracing my c!dreamisms and my c!dream apologism. I kept my c!dream apologisms hush hush in front of my friends for so long. I still do to an extent. I'm scared, okay? And I don't wanna get into arguments with them, so it's best to just, like, not bring it up I guess.
