I came up with the absolute worst idea for a cactiflower fic

VHS 3: Need you to know I love you more than anything (Cactus and His Wilted Sunflower)

It was a harshly cold day in the middle of February. Below freezing and snow squalls making it difficult to see much more than your own hand in front of your face. Most would assume that the graveyard behind the church in Faraway Town would be devoid of life on such a day. Well those who assumed that truly didn’t know Kel Garcia. As despite the conditions, he was there bundled in winter attire and holding a box close to his chest as he slowly but surely made his way to a grave that he visited everyday without fail.

Kneeling down, he places gloved hand against the stone rubbing off the excess snow.

Our dear sunflower Basil Fey. Your thoughts will follow us into our dreams.

The brunette’s eyes sting a bit as he places down the box and wipes his watery eyes with his now free hand. Even after 3 years, it still stung like it just happened yesterday. And it hurt. It hurt it hurt it hurt like a dull ache in his that would never subside in his chest.

“Hey my little flower. It’s me again…I’m sorry that the others couldn’t join us today. Guess they couldn’t make it over because of the weather but you don’t have to worry. I’d never let something like the weather stop me. It’s a special day after all. It’s not everyday that you turn 20 after all.”

He weakly laughed some as he looked over at the box he brought.

“I wanted to originally bring you more flowers but I figured in this weather they would just wilt and that might make you sad…and I wouldn’t want you sad on your birthday so I made you a gift instead.”

He gives a weak smile as he pulls out a small woodcarving of a cartoonish Cactus lovingly embracing a sunflower with a weighted base to keep it from flying away when the wind blew. Was it realistic? Not at all but it was a piece made from the heart and that is the true greatest gift and honor anyone could ask for.

“I hope that you like it…hopefully one day if my nightmares ever end…we could meet again in my dreams and I could give you the proper birthday celebration you deserve…”

He stated softly with a shaky voice as he leaned the stone and just for a moment…it almost felt like the blond was there by his side giving him the comfort and reassurance he needed to have at least a couple moments of peace.

“Happy birthday…my sunflower…I still love you more than anything.”

Ok, I have an idea for an au where after fighting omori and telling his friends the truth, Sunny starts seeing creatures that are similar to Something, only he can see them following other people. They don’t seem to notice so Sunny chooses to ignore it, even when he can see the monsters growing and shrinking sometimes. 

During a visit to faraway, Sunny sees these kinds of monsters trailing his friends, but doesn’t say anything about it in fear of sounding crazy, even though the one following Kel looks particularly big. During the visit, Kel seems like his normal, cheerful self, but Sunny noted that he seemed unusually quiet and tired. When asked, Kel chalked that up to how much he was practicing for the upcoming basketball game, and he invites the whole gang to watch.

At the basketball game, everything seems normal, except that the monster is even bigger, and Kel looks even more tired than before. Still, he plays the game really well, helping his team score a lot of points. Near the end of the first quarter, Kel is getting ready to take a shot, when all of a sudden Sunny sees the monster grab him…

And Kel collapses.

Everyone freaks out, and Kel is rushed to the nurse’s office, with the rest of the gang following. The nurse says that Kel has a fever, and Sunny sees that the Something following Kel is the biggest it’s ever been. While Kel’s resting, Sunny falls asleep in one of the chairs, and somehow wakes up in whitespace. The door to the neighbor’s room is gone, but there’s an orange door with black cracks in its place.

Basically, in this au Sunny helps his friends fight off their own personal demons in their dreams before they can hurt them any further, while also trying to figure out why these monsters are attacking people in a more physical manner all of a sudden (and why he can see them in the first place)

The idea for the fight with Kel’s demon is that it’s a giant shadow creature that’s shining like a solar eclipse. Its hands are covering Kel’s mouth and have the image of a giant grin on them, and when provoked, it attacks with a bunch of spikes, like those on a cactus. All the while, Kel is yelling to sunny that he’s fine, even after everything that happened, and every time he says that, the monster heals itself.

Little Nightmares... but flowers?

Okay so there's this thing in OMORI where each main character has a flower that correlates to their personality. Kel being a cactus because he's resilient, Hero being a rose because he's universally loved, etc.

Now what if we were to assign flowers to each Nightmare Kid?

Like Noone, Low, Mono, Six, Cici, Raincoat, etc.

I've left a whole essay on this topic below, so you can look at that if you really want to--

Ideas/flowers I assigned are listed below:

I think Mono would be a crocus or a forget-me-not. They're both colours I think he'd like, and I've always imagined Mono to be a winter-birthday kid. Crocus are flowers that bloom in late winter, and I suppose that also represents resilience in a way??? Not many flowers bloom in the winter because of the cold. As for forget-me-nots... I think it's easy to explain? Forget-me-nots usually symbolize faithfulness and remembrance, and Mono just... radiates that stuff.

Six would either be a poppy, dandelion, or a bleeding hearts flower. Poppy because they actually have two meanings! In western culture, it represents death, because of its blood-red colour, while in eastern culture, they represent success or passion, if I remember correctly. Dandelion is... self-explanatory? It's yellow, like Six's raincoat, and it's a weed- just like Six- (/hj /hj) Bleeding hearts is also self-explanatory. It's literally a flower that looks like a bleeding heart. Plus they're cool, and I think Six would think so as well. I rest my case.

Noone is probably the easiest? I mean... she did have a flower in the podcast so my homework's already done for me. I think Noone would be a chrysanthemum or a poppy. Poppy for the same reason as Six, it means death and success Chrysanthemum because it's the flower that her parents left her before she was taken under Otto's "care"

Raincoat would probably be a hibiscus or a carnation. Raincoat was a pretty short-lived character, just like how hibiscus have a short life-span. They also mean "gentle" or something of the sort. Since Raincoat radiates gentle older-sister-energy, I'm giving this to her. Red carnations are a symbol of love (both romantic and platonic), protection, and passion. Raincoat feels like a very loving character, and a passionate one at that. She feels like she'd do anything in her power to protect anyone she loves. She just... feels like a carnation.

I don't have much to say about Runaway, but he feels like a periwinkle person. Reason 1, it means hope (apparently), and Runaway seems to have a lot of ties to "hope"? I'm not sure where or how we got there, but... nonetheless it's still there. Reason 2, it's blue. That's it. It's blue, just like Runaway. I would say the typical "water lily" or "lotus", because Runaway has a lot of connections to water... but... That's basic. Plus, lotus and lilies mean like... "purity" and "calmness" and all that jazz, and the Runaway in my head is the pure and utter opposite to "calm" and "virtuous". The only lily-flower I'd refer him to would be pink or yellow water lilies. Pink because they apparently mean friendship and joy, yellow because they mean energy and new beginnings.

Low and Alone are their own can of worms that I can't even open. We know next to nothing about these two, so how am I supposed to assign a flower based on their characteristics if I have no characteristics to work with? The only thing I can offer atm is Alone being a tiger lily and Low being a Birds of Paradise flower. Tiger lily because they remind me of Alone's silly goofy hair. And Birds of Paradise because... um... bird-boy.

The Cactus is more of a plant than a flower but it does have some symbolism like flowers do. Cacti are resilient plants by nature that can survive in harsh arid conditions. That is why they symbolize endurance, strength in the face of adversity, and unconditional love.

"The day Basil died and I felt his hand go limp and cold as I held it. I heard two screams of Basil's name. They were raw...visceral...tainted with a form of agony and grief as deep and boundless as the sea...It wasn't until Hero tried to pull me away from Basil that I realized...Those screams I heard that day...the ones that haunt my nightmares...came from Sunny and I...."

In the tales of a wilted sunflower timeline, Kel is no longer the boy of boundless energy that always smiles. About a year after Basil's death and the incident that played out on that day, his dynamic with Sunny had changed. Instead of being the one being the supportive rock, Sunny took on that role as Kel became more withdrawn. While officially, Kel is listed as living at home with his parents, he more often than not is with Sunny at his place as he feels more comfortable by Sunny's side especially when Hero's away at college.

Since Basil's death, Kel is without a doubt an insomniac, constantly consuming an unhealthy amount of Orange Joe to try to avoid the nightmares that plague his mind every time he closes his eyes. Though it seldom helps as the visions of the nightmares tend to leak out as hallucinations if he's really pushing his luck on how far he can go without sleep. Currently, he works as a part timer at Fix its in faraway plaza and always goes to the graveyard once a day to sit besides Basil's headstone so that 'he never ever has to feel alone anymore'. Sometimes Kel will talk. Sometimes he will just quietly sit there for a bit. But no matter what, Rain or shine, Kel will be there, at least for a few minutes each day.

Additional Facts:

-Kel has the flower clip Basil always wore. He keeps it on him at all times and never leaves home without it

-Kel wears a bracelet on each wrist. On the left wrist is a sunflower bracelet, on the right, a white tulip bracelet. He gave the cactus charm bracelet to Basil.

-Even though he is more withdrawn and doesn't smile, Kel is still incredibly kind and will help someone who comes to him in desperate need of help.
