Meditations in an Emergency I wake up & it breaks my heart. I draw the blinds & the thrill of rain breaks my heart. I go outside. I ride the train, walk among the buildings, men in Monday suits. The flight of doves, the city of tents beneath the underpass, the huddled mass, old women hawking roses, & children all of them, break my heart. There's a dream I have in which I love the world. I run from end to end like fingers through her hair. There are no borders, only wind. Like you, I was born. Like you, I was raised in the institution of dreaming. Hand on my heart. Hand on my stupid heart. - Cameron Awkward-Rich

And although desire always exceeds the object, although the wound remains open, we remain attached both because the promise of closure is not broken, merely and perpetually deferred, but also and most importantly because something usable is produced by the attachment.

Quote
It’s hard enough to move around in the world as a body that invites scrutiny, the presumption of intimacy, and motivated ‘interest,’ you know? So I do think there is something about the gap in the lyric as enabling, also, the impossibility of closeness between writer and reader that I appreciate, that allows me to write poems at all.

In the end, isn’t that what we all want?
“& in the end, isn’t that what we all want?                        To not feel so split?                      To carry an image of ourselves                           inside ourselves & know exactly what we mean        when we say I—                                                         I—” —  Cameron Awkward-Rich, from “The Child Formerly Known As—” (Split this Rock, 2013)
