Megamind Sequel, animation, and the apparently-forgotten era of CGI shows
Alright guys, buckle up, it’s time to talk about Megamind and the sequel/show!
Let’s start with the basics: two new additions to the Megamind world are coming out: a tv show called “Megamind Rules!”, and a sequel movie, Megamind Vs the Doom Syndicate. Obviously, the first thing everyone noticed was the animation quality lacking in comparison to the first movie. Then, people quickly reacted either agreeing or complaining that people were complaining, etc.
Yes. The animation is not as good as the movie, or as good as what people have come to expect from CGI nowadays. This is NOT the fault of the animators, obviously!
But I think we can all temper our reactions by remembering a few key points!
This sequel is not the grand ‘Megamind 2’ people have been dreaming of. Will Ferrell is not voicing Megamind and the animation looks funky, I know. Therefore, we can’t think of this as a movie going to theaters, but a sort of direct-to-tv/direct-to-dvd sequel. Think Cinderella 2, Ice Age Buck Wild, Aladdin 2: The Return of Jafar, etc!
To put the expectations of the Megamind 2 of our dreams on this movie and series is unfair to it. This is the equivalent of a direct-to-DVD disney sequel that you didn’t hear about until I years later and were like ‘wait, there’s a Tarzan 2???’ in the middle of a drug store (that was a shocking day.) Enjoy it for what it is!!
2. The modern CGI animation consumer has been spoiled rotten. Yes, that includes lots of animation enthusiasts! Back in the day, particularly in the 2010s, ‘poorly’ animated TV shows based on a popular movie were pretty common, ESPECIALLY for dreamworks! Meet some of the examples:
Kung-Fu Panda, Legends of Awesomeness
Tumblr media
Aliens Versus Monsters
Tumblr media
Penguins of Madagascar
Tumblr media
This is NOT a knock on those shows, especially on their quality. Personally, I think Penguins of Madagascar had great animation quality, especially in the later seasons. CGI animation for television is a different beast and doesn’t have the same budget as a movie. (Also, Penguins Of Madagascar show was fantastic, 10/10, no notes, INCREDIBLE music changed lives etc etc.)
Nowadays, CGI animated shows have animation quality comparable to movies, including some Dreamworks ones, such as Kung Fu Panda show Paws of Destiny, or Cars on the Road, the really fun cars short series!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. The good points!! There is a lot to like about this! The Doom Syndicate is actually pretty cool, as they were first mentioned in I believe the art book, a video game, and an original draft of a sequel film (don’t quote me on that)
Not only that, but ROXANNE IS STILL THERE!! This may seem small, but it’s been common in the past for female love interests to be thrown away and replaced, often because a voice actress couldn’t come back (that’s part of why I loved Puss in Boots 2 so much: Kitty Softpaws had her same voice actress and was still an integral part of the plot just like the first movie) Roxanne still being part of the cast and still being with Megamind is not something to take for granted.
4. Is it disappointing that the long-awaited sequel isn’t a full-blown theatrical release? Yes. Is it disappointing that the voices aren’t returning? Also yes. However…
TL;DR - Megamind 2 and the show should be taken for what they are: a 2010s style tv series and a direct to dvd sequel respectively, this is NOT the fault of any animator, and is not necessarily indicative of quality of writing. Enjoy it for what it is!

Disney Villain Bracket
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
basically how this works is we have brackets a, b, and c. c is a tricky one, hopefully ill explain right
it’s basically a bracket and a half, and the villains in the half bracket will go across and meet in the middle, and the winner of that goes against the two villains on the bracket above
once we get to the middle two in a and b and have that vote, and once the double elimination in bracket c happens, the three villains will all go head to head… to head. it’ll be the three winners of each bracket in one final poll
am i explaining correctly? oh well, y’all will see what i mean when we get there
im sure a lot of y’all have opinions on how this was put together but keep in mind ive never done this before and i did my best. so
also! voting criteria is you picking your favorite of the villains in each poll. not the movies or shows or whatever they’re from, im talking about the characters themselves
i will be posting the polls on the left side of bracket A first, on Monday, April 17 at 12 PM CST! after that, i will post the left side of bracket B the following day at the same time. then the left side of bracket C the next day. the day after that, i will post the right side of bracket A, then B, then C. you get it

The Genie Team S9EP023 - “Zachery’s New Genie Friend” (part 5)
(start of script part five)
Ellie teleports herself, me, Mina, Hunter, Sally, Mirabelle, Carly and Acerola to where Great Hadji is; his tent near Agrabah. When I see Agrabah, I immediately recognize it due to its massive palace, as I’ve seen Aladdin, Return if Jafar, and King of Thieves, as well as the Aladdin TV series countless times. In the tent, Ellie informs Great Hadji that a newcomer to the genie school has arrived. Sally and Mirabelle escort me into the tent and I meet Great Hadji for the first time. I say that it’s a great honor to meet Great Hadji in person, and Ellie tells him that I’d like to become Mina’s new master, and she explains that it’s because I’m a massive fan of her. After thinking about it for a bit, Great Hadji accepts and he summons Ryan. Once Ryan is summoned, Ellie tells him that it’s time to transfer Mina’s lamp to a new master. I introduce myself to Ryan, telling him that Great Hqdji has chosen me to be Mina’s next master. And after I tell him why, Ryan understands and gives Mina’s lamp to me, and with that, I become Mina’s new master. With the transfer complete, Great Hadji tells me that he hopes that I’ll do well in the genie school, and that I’ll learn to be a protector like Ellie and the others. I say that even the I have a long way to go as I'm a newcomer, but I’ll get there and I’ll make Great Hadji and the others proud. And I even say that I’m very very happy to be the master of a genie that has phenomenal cosmic powers (but at the cost of itty bitty living space). After I say all that, Mirabelle and Sally let me know that they saw the button pins on my backpack, and I tell them that all but two of them are of railroad logos. And I even show them that there are two railroad logos on my shirt and one more on my cap. Mirabelle and Sally are amazed, as are Mina and the others. And I say that I can’t wait to tell my friends about Mina and the genie team and the genie school. And I add that the railroad logos on my backpack, shirt and cap are a hint at most of my friends. Then Hunter and Ellie notice the logos of Blue’s Clues and Dinoco on my backpack. And before they say anything, I confirm that I have friends from Blue’s Clues as well, and that Dinoco is my favorite racing team in Pixar’s Cars 1 and 3. Ellie is quite intrigued and Mina can’t wait to meet her new master’s friends. And I tell Mina that she and the others will when the time comes. The story ends with a cliffhanger shot at the Water Level Route showing a brief closeup glimpse of a grey steam locomotive… and another cliffhanger shot at the Horseshoe Curve showing a brief closeup of a dark gray steam locomotive. And whistles from both engines are blown as the screen goes black.

'Ryan Knapp woke up before sunrise one morning in July and left his home in northern New Hampshire at 5:30 a.m. to catch a movie.
It wasn’t just any day at the cinema. In fact, it was a 14-hour round-trip journey that involved crossing two state lines by car, train and bus. That’s because Knapp wanted to see Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” the way the director intended: in Imax 70mm, a rare format crafted from Nolan’s film negative, with physical reels spanning 11 miles and weighing 600 pounds. It’s a movie nerd’s dream — but it’s only available on 30 screens worldwide, 19 of them in the U.S.
So Knapp trekked to Providence, R.I., for a 2 p.m. showing. The verdict? “It was definitely worth it.”
Ariana DeBose Sci-Fi Thriller ‘I.S.S’ Acquired by Bleecker Street “Oppenheimer,” an R-rated three-hour drama consisting mainly of people talking in rooms, is not the type of movie audiences typically clamor to see on premium screens. Yet Imax accounted for a whopping 20% of the film’s $180.4 million global opening. And the company’s share of the movie’s box office haul has increased each successive weekend, with the 70mm version raking in $17 million to date, an astounding figure for such a limited format.
Audiences have flocked to Imax screens because they offer an experience that cannot be replicated at home, according to box office analyst Jeff Bock, and “when a Christopher Nolan film comes out, that is an event in and of itself.” Plus, premium large formats like Imax 70mm are “a cinephile argument that has now carried over into the mainstream.”
According to Nolan, Imax 70mm is the ideal cinema experience because “the sharpness and the clarity and the depth of the image is unparalleled.” But there are serious limitations when it comes to bringing the format to a wider audience. For one, Imax has only 30 Imax film projectors in rotation worldwide, and it takes three days to create each print. Since most theaters have switched over completely to digital projection, the company worked for two years to evaluate, reinstall and fix Imax 70mm projectors, sending tech teams to every site to perfect the audiovisual components. With “Oppenheimer,” Imax oversaw the hiring of 50 film projectionists globally and helped develop the first-ever Imax 70mm black-and-white film, bringing some of Kodak’s more experienced personnel out of retirement in the process.
Due to popular demand, Imax has twice extended “Oppenheimer’s” 70mm run. But on Sept. 1, exhibitors will have to cede those screens to Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 3.”
“We really want to support Chris and the movie in every way we can, but we have to balance that with our other commitments,” says Richard Gelfond, CEO of Imax. “We’ll play it by ear and see where it goes.”
Mark Jafar, Imax’s global head of corporate communications, adds, “Imax 70mm film lasts, on average, 10 times longer than regular 70mm or 35mm film. Those prints are assets that we’ll be using for the next 20 years.” He’s confident that specialty theaters like BFI in London and AMC Lincoln Square in New York will bring back “Oppenheimer” in Imax 70mm for Nolan retrospectives.
But it might return even sooner. With theaters selling out more than three weeks in advance — and fans like Knapp road-tripping to their nearest Imax 70mm showing — it’s likely “Oppenheimer” will come back to premium large formats after moviegoers have checked out “The Equalizer 3.”
As Imax 70mm continues to permeate the mainstream and draw in younger auteurs like Jordan Peele and Damien Chazelle, Gelfond’s hope is to “find more projectors and refurbish them.”
“It’s an art form that’s been fading away,” he says. “Imax is all in on trying to keep film alive.”
With $134 million generated from “Oppenheimer” alone, the premium film-tech company is largely responsible for bringing multiplexes out of the pandemic slump. “If Hollywood is going to invest in one thing,” says Bock, “it should have almost everything to do with Imax.”'

They keep adding these slightly better safety features with every new car that comes out, you’d think they would sack up and put all the safety features on it at once and people would never need new models again, but they’re fucking cowards.
Like, how have they not thought of using magnets on the exteriors of cars to prevent crashes? Not even big magnetic sheets of metal or anything, just like long rows of tiny fridge magnets. Just powerful enough to keep cars from swerving lanes and shit. Dumbasses.
Side Note: Bring back blimps, you pussies.

What got you into writing? What fandoms/ships have you written for? And because I'm also curious, what is the weirdest thing you have had to learn/research for a story - to the point of "Damn, that's weird. Even for me"? (Sorry about the multiple questions. I didn't want to clutter up your inbox)
Please clutter up my inbox, I’m perfectly happy with a cluttered inbox! :) And because I tend to write long answers, when I get multiple questions in one ask, it makes for a very very long post with a whole bunch of replies that have nothing to do with each other, so I tend to separate them into multiple posts anyway.
The first question has a relatively short answer though. I got into writing because I had insomnia as a three-year-old.
Every night, I got put to bed at bedtime—whenever it was, I don’t remember, except that it was too early. I couldn’t fall asleep. I just lay there in bed, for forever, staring into the dark and fidgeting from absolutely overwhelming boredom. There is nothing on this world more boring than lying in bed in the dark for hours straight unable to sleep, unable to get up to entertain yourself, unable to listen to music or watch TV or anything to pass the time.
At three years old I was gonna go insane. Being stuck in bed with insomnia and no permission to move around and mitigate the boredom is like being in a sensory deprivation tank with blankets. All you’ve got is what’s inside your head.
So I started making up stories, like watching movies, in my head to pass the time. Because, like, that was the only power available to me.
At the time, generally they were about Iago the parrot from Aladdin going on adventures, because Iago was my first favorite character. (I was deeply emotionally compromised by Return of Jafar.) As my interest filtered through other shows and later books it’d be about those characters.
Turns out “zone out and make stories inside of your head” is something you can do at any time and any place with no toys, no paper and pencil or crayon, no TV, no nothing. It requires zero tools! All you gotta do is not pay attention and do it! Perfect for:
- waiting rooms
- riding in the car on long trips
- riding in the car on short trips
- the toilet
- the bathtub
- swinging on the swings at recess
- running laps in gym
- and more!!!
so “zone out and make stories” became my default reaction to boredom.
As we can see, I was being plagued by an extremely annoying side-effect of ADHD (insomnia) as young as three years old. I didn’t get diagnosed and medicated until fifteen. I spent most of my childhood three seconds away from boredom so intense I could feel it buzzing under my skin. So before anything was done about my constant mental understimulation, I had a dozen years for “make stories all day every day” to get hardwired as my go-to idle action.
And it still is my go-to idle action. On an average work day by the time I get home I’ve come up with 2-3 variations on whatever plotline I’ve been recently playing with for my current hyperfixation.
I started telling stories at like, four, five years old? I didn’t start writing them until fifth grade. Until then writing was impossible because it was too much sustained concentration in a row. I vividly recall being nine years old trapped in a feverish near-delirious trance staring at my paper on my desk—honestly near delirious, my vision was literally swimming from boredom—because I had to re-copy a story I’d written in class in “legible handwriting,” because I was too bored to coordinate my hands long enough to physically write it—we’re talking a half hour to write one sentence—but I wasn’t permitted to leave and alleviate my boredom until I’d finished, and therefore, you see, I was in purgatory where I would remain for the rest of eternity powerless to do anything except stare at a half-blank piece of notebook paper trying and failing to put my pencil on it. THAT’S what writing was like for me.
But anyway! In fifth grade I had a history teacher who gave us essay questions on Friday about what we’d learned that week and exactly ONE hour to write an essay as fast as possible and I was like, oh no. But it turned out that it was 1) easy, and 2) fun. And after that I could write down stories! For the longest time I credited him with somehow “breaking the curse” that had blocked me from being able to write my stories. In retrospect I think what he did was train me on how to tap into the ability to hyperfocus, which, like, same thing.
I was wrong, that wasn’t a short answer. Anyway, long story short, I write because I had insomnia when I was three. Long story even shorter, I write because I have ADHD.

Call Me A Freak- Chapter 2: Mother Knows Best
Words: 1,870
Warnings: death threats, manipulation, physical and emotional abuse
Ch 1 | Ch 3
~ ~ ~
Tumblr media
“You will go. You will find the Fairy Godmother. And you will bring me back her magic wand,” my mother snarled.
I bit down on the inside of my cheek. There had to be a way to convince her that this was a bad idea without just telling her that we didn’t want to go.
“The wand is pointless on the Isle. I don’t see why you’d even want it.”
She glared down at me from her throne. “It will work. After you break the barrier from Auradon.”
I felt my stomach drop. This was worse than I thought. This required too much responsibility on my end. Too much pressure. It was all too much.
She must have seen my unease, because she beckoned me closer. “Do you enjoy watching innocent people suffer?”
“Well, yeah,” I chuckled. “I mean, who doesn’t?”
“Well then, get me the wand!” she demanded before I had even finished. “With that wand and my septor, I will be able to bend both good and evil to my will!”
“Our will,” the Evil Queen added.
I could see my mother’s face drop in frustration, but she didn’t argue. “Our will,” she corrected herself. She had to put on a good face. If I knew my mother, she would just as soon get rid of her supposed “friends” and their children to seize power for herself.
She turned her stare back on me. “And if you refuse… you’re dead.”
I widened my eyes. “What? Mom-”
But she snapped her fingers in front of my face and silenced me. I shouldn’t have been surprised. She would do absolutely anything to get what she wanted, but was death just a threat? I was her last remaining child…
She leaned down to me and in a flash, her eyes had lit up with a sickly, emerald color.
My eyes reciprocated before I could stop them, caught in an intense staring contest with my mother. I was bound to lose. Her powers of persuasion were too strong, but I really didn’t want to do this. I didn’t want to put my friends through something like this, when I knew they would get nothing in return.
My throat closed up. I was afraid. If I won this, she could simply kill me. Send me out back and have one of her guards crush my skull under his feet. I knew she wouldn’t even kill me herself.
“Fine,” I muttered, looking at the floor. I couldn’t let her see my face right now. It was too hard to veil my disappointment.
“I win,” she gloated.
There was a moment of tense silence. I don’t think anyone in the room had ever heard my mother threaten me with so much, especially not my friends, and they weren’t sure how to respond.
Most of the villains actually cared quite deeply for their kids. This did nothing to make them good parents, but they wouldn’t murder their children for disobediance. But Maleficent… she didn’t have a heart. She wasn’t just evil, she was unstoppable. And it terrified me.
“Evie!” the Evil Queen called behind me. Evie started to bounce over to her mother, as she continued, “My little evillette in training. You must find yourself a prince with a big castle.”
Evie’s face lit up. She worshipped her mother and her mother’s ideology. All Evie could have ever wanted from life was to sit on a throne, surrounded by servants, and riches, and reassurance that she was beautiful.
She giggled in excitement, but her mother shut her down immediately. “No laughing! Wrinkles!”
“Well, they’re not taking my Carlos, because I’d miss him too much,” Cruella cooed.
Carlos’ face morphed between confusion and hope. “Really mom?”
“Yes!” she exclaimed. “Who would touch up my roots, fluff my fur, and scrap the bunyans off my feet?”
His face dropped at the sentiment. “Maybe a new school wouldn’t be the worst thing,” he grumbled, but she shut him down from that thought almost immediately.
“Carlos, they have dogs in Auradon.”
“Oh no, I’m not going!” he insisted.
“Well, Jay isn’t going either!” Jafar cried from the other side of the room. “I need him to stock the shelves in my store.” He then proceeded to shuffle through all the Jay had stolen on our endeavor today.
“What is wrong with you all?” my mother shouted, regaining my attention. She walked down to floor level with us, grabbing my arm as she went and shoving me down into the seat next to her. “For twenty years, I have searched for a way off this island. For twenty years, they have robbed us from our revenge!”
I couldn’t help curling into myself as she yelled and threw me around. I stared down at the table, trying to calm myself, while she continued.
“Revenge on Snow White and her horrible little men. Revenge on Aladdin and his bloated genie!”
“I will-” Jafar started, in a fit of anger, but Jay held him back.
“Revenge on every sneaking dalmation that escaped your clutches! And I, Maleficent, the evilest of them all, I will finally have revenge on Sleeping Beauty… and her relentless little prince,” she said mockingly.
“Villians!” she shouted. They all turned to her, awaiting her command. “Our day has come. E.Q.,” she turned to the queen, “give her the magic mirror.”
The Evil Queen handed her daughter a small object, about the size of Evie’s hand.
“This is your magic mirror?” she questioned.
“Well, it ain’t what it used to be,” her mother responded. “But it will help you find things.”
“My spellbook!” Maleficent remembered. “I need my…” she trailed off, in thought, so the Evil Queen nodded behind her.
My mother flipped around. “Aha! The safe!” She ran over to what was, essentially, a refrigerator, containing her most prized possession.
“Come, darling,” she beckoned me. As I approached, she pulled it out, running her fingers over the cover. “It doesn’t work here, but it will in Auradon.”
Not two seconds later, there was a honking outside, signalling the arrival of our ride. She shoved the book into my arms and guided me out to the balcony.
As I looked over the edge, down at the dirty, crowded streets, I realized I was leaving the Isle. Really leaving. Not just daydreaming about a different world, where there are fields and clean air, but actually going there. Or… somewhat going there.
Whenever I had dreamed of a better world before, it hadn’t been Auradon. I knew that if I were in Auradon, things wouldn’t be better. They would be cleaner, perhaps, but not better. I could never fit into a place like Auradon. It was full of royal people who have learned all their lives how to be proper and just and despise those like me. And if I were truly there, it would mean shunning the Isle. It would mean leaving behind all that I knew and possibly having it turn on me, too.
No, Auradon might have inspired this fake world, but this fantasy of mine was perfect. It was made specifically so that I could feel peace.
“The future of the free world rests on your shoulders,” my mother told me, her arm still wrapped around me, forcing me to look between the shaky apartments of my city and at the green hills of Auradon.
I could just make it out across the ocean. It truly looked like a paradise for all. But my friends and I didn’t deserve paradise. So, what was Auradon going to be for us? Some sort of trap? Punishment? Hell?
“Don’t blow it,” she added, gripping onto my arm, like a threat.
I made eye contact with her and she sent me a tense smile, which did nothing to make me feel better, then turned on her heel and began to walk downstairs.
I hesitated for just a moment, before following her.
Once I had grabbed my bag and made my way downstairs, I took in the car. Many on the streets were swarming it, throwing rocks or banging on the windows. It was obviously a very strong car, to be able to withstand the fury of the Isle.
I lifted my bag in front of my face, to avoid getting hit, but a few rocks still managed to pummel my arms and stomach.
The driver didn’t get out of the car. Probably a smart move on his part. As far as I could tell, he was the first person from Auradon to ever visit the Isle of the Lost and the people weren’t exactly jumping to give him a warm welcome.
I set my bag in the back, along with Evie’s, Jay’s, and Carlos’s. As I shut the trunk, my eyes drifted behind me, and I noticed my mother had made her way back up to the balcony to watch us go.
This unsettled me more, and I looked away quickly. I pushed through the crowd of people and slid into the car, where my friends were already waiting for me.
The minute I shut the door, there was silence among us, aside from the muted yelling outside.
The car started with a jolt, taking us away from our parents. It was just a little too much for all of us. Jay and Carlos slowly started to gorge on the mountains worth of candy they had laid out for us, but neither of them talked. Evie watched as we drifted away from the central part of the Isle, the groups of people watching us lessening as we got farther away. And I was staring at the floor, trying to concentrate. I had to make a plan, someway to get us out of Auradon as soon as possible. Once my mother had what she wanted, I would be off the hook.
The wall between us and the driver slowly descended a minute later. Evie turned around curiously, but all the excitement vanished from her face as she saw what was going on. “Look!”
Attached to the Isle was a bridge. Supposedly it was what had brought all the villains over twenty years ago, but there was no going over it now. It was demolished the minute every villain was off Auradon soil, stranding them there.
We approached this bridge now, no other path to turn on, no slowing down.
“It’s a trap!” Carlos screamed, and my eyes widened. There was no way they had asked for us, just to drive us into the ocean, right?
We all called out in fear, grabbing hold of one another. But the deathly fall we were expecting never came.
With a look around, I came to realize that the bridge had reappeared. Or, at least, a bridge had appeared.
It was gold and circled around us entirely, almost like a tunnel.
“What just happened?” Carlos questioned.
“It must be magic!” Evie giggled from beside me.
I slowly started to realize that we were well past the barrier at this point. This bridge, or tunnel, or whatever it was, seemed to have opened a way for us to safely leave the Isle. And just like that, we were the first villains to get off the Isle in twenty years.
