Buddie 616 meta
Tumblr media
Maybe I’ll start with Eddie confirming something I’d already discussed in my meta posts more than once before, most recently in my 614 meta, which is that he married Shannon because she got pregnant. He heavily insinuated this to Bobby back in 217, but now he said it explicitly, to everyone, and without the same kind of weight which we saw from him in the past. I think this change is indicative of how he IS healing from the trauma of how badly his marriage failed and how guilty he’s felt over it, now that he’s capable of talking about it more lightly than he did before. I love that for our boy. ~~
Tumblr media
Speaking of these men actually being boys, moron husbands, partners in dumbness, we got Buck and Eddie sharing one brain cell and NOT putting it to good use. Even though in the overall scheme of 911 things, that might not seem that significant, I have to say I just love seeing them like that. It’s FUN seeing them being morons who support each other in the way they try to deal with Chim thinking that just popping the question to Maddie is enough, or in Eddie supporting Buck’s dumbass suggestion of a flash mob, or just being pressed together in the fire truck ‘coz they never have any personal boundaries with each other and they don’t understand why those would even be needed (seriously, don’t think too long about how all of a sudden five people had to squeeze in the back instead of four, and OF COURSE it would be Buck and Eddie rubbing thighs together, because no other pair out of the whole team is as comfortable with each other’s bodies). This may not be the deepest part of their bond, but it IS a part of it, a consistent one, the daily partnership that’s the foundation for the big, important, profound parts. ~~
Tumblr media
Once again, we get a demonstration of how the way Buck and Eddie are with each other is different to how they act with their other friends. Even when Eddie is exasperated with Buck, he never actually gets upset, he just tries to get Buck to focus, like we saw him in 516. But with Ravi, Eddie does kinda snap.
Tumblr media
Buck as well, when he hears some unpleasant truths about Madney from Hen, there’s no fondness underlining their talk, as much as we know that they DO love each other and have a sibling-like relationship. But compare that to how insufferably affectionate the glances that Buddie exchanged in 504 were as Eddie did essentially the same thing for Buck. ~~
Tumblr media
And then of course, we see how Hen has Chimney’s back in this ep, putting his well being first, but she does end up hurting him. They talk it over, and within the same ep she apologizes, he forgives her, everything is resolved, and they move. It’s lovely, but think about the difference in intensity between this and what Buddie went through back in s3. Buck files the lawsuit that would stop him from seeing Eddie in 304. Then the very reserved Eddie has a public meltdown, in the middle of a store, and right in front of his colleagues, because he can’t deal with Buck not being in his life. In fact, that’s the final straw that makes Eddie turn to street fighting. Not only that, because the intensity of his feelings overwhelms him, he doesn’t even directly express his hurt, he uses Chris to convey how much Eddie himself is missing Buck. When Buck realizes just how much pain he unintentionally caused, he wants to apologize, but Eddie is too hurt to be able to hear him out right away. It’s only in 306 that they finally talk, Eddie forgives Buck and then we get the beauty of their hug. But this is STILL not the final piece, no. The show will get back to this in the kitchen scene in 309, where Buck shows Eddie he’s worth apologizing to a second time (even though he’s not even asking Buck to), and the final shot of this is the domestic image of Buddifer on the couch, playing video games together. This is when we know that all is TRULY forgiven, when we get to see them once more as a family unit. Because that’s what they are on top of being best friends, like Hen and Chimney. ~~
Tumblr media
I’ll point out that Madney and Buddie paralleling is not new. This has been an ongoing theme since Buck and Chim’s new love interests were both introduced in 201, and since Madney got their onset in 206. The very fact that Maddie thinking Chim’s cute is revealed through a dialogue between the Buckley siblings that also indicates Buck sees Eddie in the same light says it all. I have also gone on about how Buck and Maddie served as truth tellers, voicing their sibling’s crush back to them, I have talked about how Madney were friends first, incredibly domestic friends with their own intertwined routine, before they became explicitly romantic, I wrote a whole meta post about the parallels between Madney and Buddie in 512, and now I can add to this. Because Madney easily fell into the comfort of domestic life, Chim told us this week that got in the way of them stopping to make their commitment official. That’s in a sense Buddie’s story, too. They’ve been building their lives and family unit together without even clocking that they can and should stop to figure out what this thing between them is, and commit to it.
~~ (my weekly meta posts) (my Buddie gifs) (all of my content)
~~ ~~ My tag list will follow in the reblog, please let me know if you wanna be added/removed here.
~~ I’m so thankful to the amazing @whosoldherout for the meta gifs she does each week! They’re always challenging, and you always manage to knock it out of the park!
~~ Thank you to anyone supporting these meta posts. I could never express enough how grateful I am and that they continue to exist thanks to you!

“I hate saying the thing they are investing in is Buck and Eddie because I don't want it to be disrespectful to the rest of the cast. But they had HEA endings even if we didn't get to see Maddie and Chims wedding.”
I don’t find this disrespectful to the rest of the cast. And it’s honestly true.
Bathena got their love story told. And they are considered the “rock” of the show and group. We’ve seen their back stories. We’ve seen the growth and development as they work through their trauma and past and come together etc. I’m not saying there isn’t a lot of story with them but at this point there are only so many date nights or undercover operations they can go on lol. And causing marital issues isn’t something that would be received well by the fans for them.
Henren- same thing. We’ve now seen their pasts. Seen their development and growth and working through their issues and coming together. They have done the marital issues with this couple already once or twice so I don’t think anyone wants to see that again. They do have a little more wiggle room story wise with the foster kids/adoption angle and with Denny’s dad suddenly popping back up.
Madney- once again same. We’ve seen their pasts. We’ve watched them work through their traumas and issues and watched them grow together as a family and come together. I do think we will see their wedding. I honestly can’t imagine we won’t. With the show hitting its peak 100th episode in season 7 and shows usually doing a “bigger” episode to mark that, I feel like it would be a good storyline to have play then. But then after that… again not saying there aren’t storylines for them but Jennifer (Maddie’s actress) has strict conditions in her contract about how much she works so Maddie’s not used a lot, and Chim can only float around so much. No one is gonna wanna see marriage issues with this couple right after they get married and not after what they over came to get married.
Buddie- Now this is the pickle the show has written themselves into. The entire cast is married or getting married. To each other. Except for Buck and Eddie. They are quite literally the only two main characters who don’t have their happy ending. We’ve seen their pasts. We’ve seen them work through their issues and some of their trauma, and we’ve seen character growth and watched them working towards each other. Always toward each other….but then it stalls out. And the problem with it all is the show has teased and played with them as a family unit so much since the moment Eddie introduced Buck to Chris’s existence, and they have built up the importance of each other in the others lives that putting them with someone else? It’s almost impossible. They have honestly backed themselves into a rapidly approaching wall. The amount of work they would honestly have to invest at this point to introduce not one but two new characters, develop them into people the audience cares about, and progress those relationships in a believable manner that they’d both end up marrying said people? That’s just not something I realistically can see them willing to do. Which means we either get them with unsatisfying partners that the audience hates, which honestly would suck for the characters and the actors, or they finally pull the trigger and invest in buddie. And they are gonna have to decide it soon because based off the complaints at the end of season 6, no one, fans or general audience, are interested in watching the “Buck and Eddie get new girlfriends. Buck and Eddie breakup with said new girlfriends. Buck and Eddie stay single all season until 6 episodes left. Buck and Eddie meet new woman because they can’t be single at seasons end” cycle again. It’s repetitive, it’s boring, and honestly a disservice to the characters and their growth, and dissatisfying for the audience because they are fan favorites and who wants to see their favorite characters constantly unhappy.
Perfectly said about every couple (or almost couple) on the show anon.

writing poll game
tagged by @disasterbuckdiaz @housewifebuck @devirnis 🌙
rules: make a 24 hour poll with the names of your wips and then for whichever wins, write one sentence for every vote it gets
been trying to focus on slouching towards bethlehem, but i do have other wips floating around with sad word docs created i'd love to work on as the mood strikes or when i get sick of focusing on one thing. what are you guys interested in seeing more of during writing games?
story summaries below the cut (click read more below the poll)
operation celestial blue: date evan buckley
romcom where everyone thinks ana flores and eddie are dating but she's actually the long-suffering teacher turned friend turned life coach for one eddie diaz who is rolling her eyes and pushing and shoving him at buck. like DATE HIM ALREADY DO I HAVE TO PICK OUT YOUR OUTFITS AND HELP YOU ASK HIM for the love of godddddd
laundry and taxes with you
everything everywhere all at once inspired, buck rips apart every parallel universe he can to find one where his parents love him unconditionally the way he always wanted. he encounters different iterations of eddie along the way
break in case of emergency
buck is really trying to make it work with natalia. everything sounds so good on paper. but being a good boyfriend involves making his girlfriend a priority. which means his relationship with eddie and chris suffers a little bit. but that's normal, and eddie's got marisol, right? things come to a head when he gets a call from the hospital, because, of course, he's still eddie's primary emergency contact. makes sense with the will and all. and speaking of, he somehow needs to explain the will to natalia
hold your tonic like a crux
eddie joins station 6 instead of the 118. he keeps running into buck, who he had an ill-advised, ill-timed, and short-lived couple of hook-ups with during his LA fire academy days. he keeps running into the 118 on calls. if that wasn't awkward enough, Chris keeps talking about the really awesome volunteer aquarium tour guide he keeps wanting to see again
loose lips sink (friend)ships
chim drags buck out to the liquor festival for prospective wedding couples, since maddie can't make it that day. buck gets so drunk that he entreats poor chimney to his edmundo diaz soliloquy, or 10 reasons why he's secretly in love with eddie and can't tell him. buck doesn't remember the next day, and chim just wants to get through wedding planning in one piece. and now he has to keep his mouth shut about this disastrous big secret too. couldn't buck have told hen instead?
a home you carry with you
xmen-type alternate universe where it's not rare that some people have mutations. buck's is super strength with enhanced tracking and self-healing. he believes he can only access it through deliberately causing himself pain each time he wants to help people on a call. as a firefighter, this happens often. eddie notices immediately, and attempts different ways of preventing it. he wants to get to the bottom of buck's understanding of himself and his powers to change it
if you want, or because i'd like to know your opinion: @shitouttabuck @alyxmastershipper @diazblunt @forthewolves @giddyupbuck @transboybuckley @wildlife4life @911onabc @pirrusstuff @lesliesknopes @ice-sculptures @daffi-990 @consumedbyfeels @fcntasmas 💞

Fave Shows Tag Game
Rules: List 5 favourite shows (in no particular order) and answer questions accordingly.
Loki
Leverage
The Flash
9-1-1
Only Murders in the Building
@johnsimms Thanking you for tagging me. Love these. Answers under the cut
1. Who is your favourite character in 2?
OT3 as a set but Parker as an individual. From her in season one to her in Redemtion the growth and to still be so mysterious makes me smile. There is also because she helped me with some of my own emotional difficualties.
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?
oh but this is hard becuase I don't think i have a least favourite from Loki. Maybe the bearded Loki varient who I think is the Hippie one. Kinda creeps me.
3. What's your favourite episode of 4?
Chimney Begins and Oceans 9-1-1 are tided in place as my all time favourite episodes of 9-1-1. Some days one exceeds the other but most the time it's a tie. Ones all the drama the other all the comedy I love it.
4. What is your favourite season of 5?
Both have been so much fun to watch but maybe season 2 of OMITB because it wasn't so confide. Like the whole 'Oh shit here we go again' just makes me happy. They know what they're doing now and they've grown to love each other and want to help/protect each other more. And the twists and sudden 'Oh Shit' revelations. I looked forward to a new ep each week way more than I did with season 1.
5. What's your favourite relationship in 3?
Cisco and Everyone. Like he's the little black dress of the arrowverse. But particularly Cisco and Harry make me so happy and Cisco and Cynthia. Just the rough and ready to throw down with the sunshiny sparkle is a trope I love.
6. Who is your anti relationship in 2?
Eliot and Sterling. I just do not understand that. They hate each other so thats a rivalry I can get behind.
7. How long have you watched 1?
Since it aired. Well technically I waited for it to get a couple episodes in so I could have a few to watch in one go. So like from ep three upload date onwards.
8. How did you become interested in 3?
My brother bullied me into wacthing it. I get it cause I've been bullying him to watch Leverage (he hasn't yet I must bully harder). I enjoyed the comics before and seeing the characters in a different way on tv was cool. And being introduced to ones I'd not heard much before was real cool. I hate he was right about me enjoying it; it's fun and enjoyable (at that time it was) and well acted for a show off SeadoubleU.
9. Who is your favourite actor in 4?
Kenneth might be the most fun and play my favourite character but Jennifer Love Hewitt might be my favourite actor overall. FinalGirlScreamQueen alum has to take the top spot on this show.
10. Which show do you prefer 1, 2 or 5?
I've rewatched Leverage way more than the other. Yeah it is older and has more epiosodes even if you combinded the other two shows. It might be dated a bit and have some not so good peole involved you can say the same for the other shows. At the end of the day if all three them in a burning building I'd save Leverage.
11. Which show have you seen more episodes of 1 or 3?
The Flash and it's mostly because it's a full season worth of episodes and not a limited one like the others. Saying that I quit the show becuase it was getting bad and if they had made it limited it might have been better.
12. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Oh but this is hard cause like I'd want to be like Maddie or Chim or Hen or Bobby cuase they all so cool and have qualities I admire. So since I have a job a little like hers I'd say Maddie.
13. How would you kill off your favourite character in 5?
It would have to be something very dramatic and over the top for Oliver. I don't see him being a simple run of your mill death. It can't be a stage accident or something related to the theater. Something that would be more of a puzzle than we've already seen. So bludgeoned to death by his own phone so many suspects for it all to turn out to just be an accident after all.
14. Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Okay but this is hard becuase a crossover between the two would be hysterical. Team Flash and the 118 fighting crime together. Hen and Chim treating Barry but he's already healed up. Buck investigating the weirdness while Joe and Athena tell him to leave it to the professionals. Just the chaos that would be Cisco and Chim together with Hen and Caitlin rolling their eyes at their antics. Just think of the jokes that could be had. Think of them.
15. Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
Besides Lokius, Miss Minutes and Casey. Unlikely partners. Give them a spin off ala the office.
16. Overall, which show has the better cast, 3 or 5?
Another hard one cause I adore both sets of main (OG) casts. Like they're all so multi talented and amazing. But like I've known/watched Steve Martin Short longer and they're like a comfort pair since FotB. Their ability to make me laugh than cry and laugh-cry in OMITB is top level. But with that I do love The Flash cast and want to see where they be going next.
I'm not sure who to tag so if you see this and would like to give it a shot I tag you.

let’s talk about christopher and santa claus for a minute.
because the thing is. that kid is a national treasure and possibly magic. because he has santa’s ear. direct line to christmas miracles.
and the best part is. it’s canon.
but before we get to that. we need to talk about eddie being scared of santa when he was a kid. about the difference in eddie and christopher’s childhoods.
because eddie’s childhood lacked magic. santa wasn’t a right jolly old elf with a red suit and a belly laugh. just a creepy guy with a fake beard who smelled bad. a stranger he was forced to go see. that scared him so much he got sick. twice.
christopher’s childhood tho. filled with magic. when he was little and not feeling well (maybe around one of his surgeries?) and missing eddie. shannon caves. tries to cheer chris up with a giant tree for the backyard. but we didn't have enough ornaments to cover it, so we just loaded it up with lights and ribbon. I got the sleeping bags out, and we laid under it, just staring up at the branches for hours.
which is the most magical thing I’ve ever heard.
so really it’s no surprise that christopher believes in the magic of christmas. the power of santa. miracles and the christmas spirit.
because christopher only asked for one thing that christmas. one very specific gift. not toys. not candy. he just wants his dad. w-when you were gone, I asked santa for you to come back, and you did.
which makes me wonder what time of year it was when eddie’s helicopter was shot down. did he arrive home in time for the holidays? with his wrist in a cast and his arm in a sling and propped up by a cane. wounded but alive. home for the holidays. which is all that would matter to little christopher. that dad’s back. dad’s staying. forever.
and since christopher’s wish came true before. since santa came thru before. why wouldn’t it work again? because christopher’s got his dad. a new life, in a new city, with a new best friend. and everything is perfect. everything except the lack of shannon. christopher misses his mom. so he forgoes toys and candy once again. goes with eddie and buck to see santa. I asked him to find mom. will he?
the answer is yes. because she’s already back. has been for a while. eddie’s just been reluctant to let shannon see christopher. because he’s scared she’ll break his heart if she decided to leave again. because eddie doesn’t believe in magic. and I think that includes happily ever afters.
but christopher believes in magic and wishes. and eddie knows that. and he’ll do everything in his power to keep it that way. cause he loves christopher more than himself. loves that he believes in magic and miracles and santa.
because it allows eddie to believe thru christopher. just for a second. but seconds accumulate. grow. build. into something magical all eddie’s own.
so they get another giant tree. cover it in ribbons and lights. turn the floor into a wrapping paper treasure map for christopher to follow into the front yard. where shannon is waiting. mommy! mommy! I missed you so much. I knew Santa could do it again.
and then so much happens. by the time next christmas rolls around shannon has died and christopher’s survived a tsunami. and eddie has to work thru the holiday. buck too. christmas is ruined.
we don’t see chris talking about santa this year. or to santa. I think that’s probably on purpose. this year is about the absence of christmas spirit. and how that absence radiates out into their lives. chris storming away. giving eddie the silent treatment. buck saying he’s working too.
missing pieces. lack of communication. absent people.
but you cannot convince me that when the holidays go awry. that christopher won’t turn to his old pal santa to fix this particular problem. that he won’t ask for another christmas miracle. that his family can be together for the holidays. christopher and his dad and his buck. it tracks with christopher’s history.
and the thing is. santa comes thru. via buck. who plans a surpise holiday party at the 118. ropes athena and maddie into gathering their friends and family all together. throws the biggest holiday party in the history of the firefam.
and now I’m thinking the s5 holiday episode would be the perfect time for buddie to go canon. buck and eddie have been getting closer since their begins eps. they’ve both grown as people. tried other relationships. neither of which work out. both of which they choose to end.
actually, yes. I am into this. and here’s how it happens:
the sniper and the blackout puts things in perspective. which leads to eddie to breaking up with ana. buck realizes where his priorities are and he breaks up with taylor soon after. that’s when the shoulder bumps and playful banter starts to ramp up. they’ve always been in each other’s space and at each other’s homes. now it’s just more. buck and eddie become buck&eddie.
there’s no big declaration or passionate kiss. 911 doesn’t really do that. what we will get is a buddie hug after a too-close call that lingers a little too long. and eddie doing his sustained eye contact thing. and buck reciprocating with his eye flutter thing. then eddie reaching with his hands. then buck’s blinding smile. then...
END CREDITS. because it’ll hurt so good.
mid-way thru the next ep we’ll get confirmation in the form of carla. she’ll stumble over buck coming out of eddie’s room. there will be a little light teasing. it’s about time interspereced with domestic fluff. they will keep it to themselves for now.
and then eddie’s parents guilt trip him into going to texas for the holidays. buck has a christmas eve shift, but has christmas day off. and plans with maddie, chim, albert, and the hans for jee-yun’s first christmas. plus holiday dinner with athena and bobby’s family. he’s not going to be alone.
doesn’t feel that way tho.
and then there’s a scene at the airport that mirrors the end of s1. only instead of abby leaving it’s eddie and christopher. with buck and eddie both pretending to be okay. neither of them are.
cue eddie in texas. where everything goes wrong. of course it does. helena and ramon keep making jabs about how eddie’s raising christopher. they will never think he’s enough. even worse they don’t treat christopher like an autonomous person. but a consolation prize. a parenthood do-over.
and eddie’s miserable. christopher’s miserable. they both miss buck.
there’s definitely a firefighter santa involved. a lesson about family being who you chose. christopher won’t stop talking about last christmas at the station. about buck.
which is why. when everything comes to a head over christmas eve dinner. eddie makes an executive decision. books a red-eye flight and bundles him and christopher off to the airport.
buck’s out on a call when eddie and christopher arrive. it was only a 2 hr flight but it’s still really late. they both conk out on the sofas. and that’s where buck spots them when the trucks pull into the station. he’s doesn’t go all the way over to them. just watches them from afar. like he’s always done.
until eddie wakes up. sees him watching. reaches his hand out to buck and drags him into their space. physically connects the three of them. kisses his hand. merry christmas buck.
neither buck or eddie notice that chris is also awake. watching them with a mischieveous smile on his face. because christopher believes in magic. the christmas spirit. santa claus. and apparently santa claus believes in christopher because that man has granted each and every one of his wishes.
dad. mom. family. buck.
christopher has been slowly building his own family. via christmas miracles and the help of his good friend santa claus.
outside the window it starts snowing.
and it feels like magic.

Operation Idiots in Love
Bobby
"Okay, that's it." Hen sighed as she watched Buck run up the stairs and out the front door. "I can't take it anymore. We have gotta get them together."
"Get who together?" Bobby asked, sipping a ginger ale.
"Those two idiots who are so far up each other's asses they can't see how in love with each other they are!" she exclaimed, gesturing to where Buck disappeared too.
Chimney was nodding enthusiastically as he listened to Hen. "He's literally abandoning us because Eddie called and said he broke up with the teacher!" He threw his arms up in the air, dangerously sloshing his own drink.
"Maybe we shouldn't meddle in their personal lives, guys," Bobby admonished lightly. "If Buck and Eddie are going to actually take the leap they need to do it on their own."
"Bobby, this is a family, and family meddles in each other's personal lives." Athena gently smacked his arm for emphasis. "Not to mention they're both so oblivious it could take 20 more years before they get it together." There were laughs and murmurs of agreement from their group.
Bobby and Athena had planned a small baby shower for Maddie and Chimney, not wanting to host too many people during a pandemic, but wanting to celebrate with their chosen family. It was just them, Hen and Karen, Buck and Albert, and of course Chimney and Maddie. Eddie had been invited but had back to back appointments for Christopher and was supposed to have lunch with Ms. Flores. They'd gotten through presents, cake, and some games and were mostly just hanging around and chatting in groups when Eddie called Buck to report that, for whatever reason, he and Ana had decided to call it quits. Buck had been sprinting up the stairs before Eddie had even stopped to take a breath.
"Whose personal life are we meddling in?" Maddie asked as she made her way over to them, leaving Karen looking bewildered with a very enthusiastically gesturing Albert.
"Buck and Eddie's," Chimney said, leaning over to kiss Maddie on the cheek when she gracelessly plopped next to him on the couch. "We can't take it anymore. They obviously need a push, just to get the ball rolling."
"I wholly agree," Maddie said. "They're never gonna get there on their own." She was slowly rubbing a circle on her stomach.
"We'll need to plan it out carefully," Hen said. "Maybe we should schedule something where we can get together and brainstorm."
"I'll make a group chat now." Athena set her drink down on a coaster on the coffee table and pulled out her phone.
"We should come up with a code name," Maddie said. "We don't want them knowing we're talking about them."
Grinning, Chim said, "Operation Just Admit It Already."
Hen snickered. "Operation No Homo."
"Excuse me?" Karen said walking up.
"Operation We Can't Stand the Sexual Tension Any Longer." At that Maddie shook her head then lightly pushed Chim.
Hen quietly explained what they were up to to her wife (who looked more and more gleeful with every word) while they all got a text from Athena who had finished creating their group chat. Bobby looked at his phone, a little dismayed to be included in it, but he smiled when he saw the name of the group chat.
"That's perfect, Athena." Maddie smiled. "It's not exactly discreet but they're so oblivious they would never think it's about them."
"Bobby called them that the other night, I thought it was fitting."
"We should include Carla! She'll be so angry if we don't. She likes to gossip about them with Maddie!" Chimney said.
"We do not gossip about my brother. We simply vent about how dumb they are." Hen and Karen laughed while Chimney rolled his eyes.
Bobby sighed, sure all future down time was going to be spent on this.
Operation Idiots in Love.
---
Maddie
The next day Maddie had some time, so she called Carla to explain what they were up to and she asked immediately to be added to the group chat.
"I've been watching those two dance around each other for years. It is high time they get it together."
"Oh I know!" Maddie exclaimed. She was sitting at the table with a cup of tea, wishing it was a second cup of coffee. "I met Eddie and Chimney at the same time and I said to Buck that day ‘he's cute’ meaning Chim, but Buck immediately responded with ‘he gets that a lot, you should see his son’ cause, you know, Eddie is always on his mind. Even back then." She shook her head even though Carla wouldn't be able to see it.
"They've both been through so much, before they met and after. I just want to see my two boys happy."
"And Christopher will be okay with it, right?" Maddie, who was always on the verge of tears these days, fought to keep herself from crying.
"Honey, Christopher has told me at least 4 times that he wants his dad to marry Buck, so that Buck can be around all the time!"
"He has?" Maddie asked, losing the battle with her tear ducts.
"That boy loves our Buckaroo so much,” Carla said, and Maddie could hear the smile in her voice.
"Buck loves him so much, too," she said, sniffling. "Okay I will add you to the group chat. But I am warning you now you might want to keep it muted. Chim and Hen have been blowing it up all morning."
After hanging up with Carla, Maddie had a stern talk with her tears ducts -we cannot cry over everything for the rest of this pregnancy!- downed her tea and quickly got ready for work. She'd downgraded to only working part time as her pregnancy progressed. Since this was a geriatric pregnancy (God, did Maddie hate that word) she knew she and the baby were at a higher risk and wanted to make sure she wasn't over exerting herself- not to mention the fact that she cried a lot easier these days. And when you're a 911 operator crying is not beneficial to the people who really need her help. When she got to the call center she saw May and Linda already on the phones and Josh standing with another operator named Cheryl. She quickly made her way to the locker room to stow her bag, stopped for more tea from the break room and settled in at her desk. It was an hour later when she got some inspiration from a call. The caller was a young woman, Daisy, who was on a first date at a small vegan restaurant, and her date, Cara, had been hit by a car while crossing the street after lunch- nothing serious just a broken leg, though, from the sounds of the scene, the driver was under the influence. She dispatched a squad car and EMS to the scene and waited with Daisy who was on the verge of a panic attack. Maddie was able to keep her calm by giving her clear directions on how to help her date, and reminding her to breath. Daisy had the phone on speakerphone, laying on the pavement next to Cara’s head and when the paramedics arrived Daisy let out a sob. “They’re here! Maddie, the paramedics are here!”
“Good. I may be a little biased, but the 118 is the best firehouse in the city and they will take excellent care of Cara.”
“Playing favorites, Mads?” she heard Chimney say followed by the smack of his chewing gum. “Guess I can’t really blame you. Alright, Miss, can you tell me your name?”
“Cara,” she said weakly. Daisy must have picked up her phone and turned off speaker phone because Chimney’s voice became quieter as he continued to assess Cara’s injuries.
“They know you?” Daisy asked.
“They do.” Maddie smiled. “We’re family.”
When Daisy disconnected the call, Maddie quickly wrote down the name of the vegan restaurant knowing that her brother would love it.

Hen
In the week since they started this group chat Hen and Chimney had been tossing out plenty of outlandish and silly plots to get the boys together, but she knew none of them would actually work. Maddie was working on something involving a restaurant but so far nothing had happened. They needed something so rational and normal that Buck and Eddie wouldn’t even question it. They needed a new tactic so she opened up Operation Idiots In Love and sent off a message.
When did you first realize? >Hen
Chimney< When Buck completely lost it when Eddie was trapped underground
Chimney< dude was clawing at the mud with his bare hands WAILING
Karen< Christmas 2019 he organized that whole dinner so Christopher could spend Christmas with his dad!
Carla< Xmas 2019 for me as well
Athena< When Bobby called Eddie after he stole Chimney’s phone and was nearly arrested.
Karen< Does that mean Bobby knew before then?
Karen< The first time Hen mentioned it to me was when Buck arranged for Christopher to spend the day at the firehouse. Is that when you knew, babe?
Chimney< 🤮 babe
That was the day I called it. The way that Eddie looked at Buck that day nearly knocked me over >Hen
👊🏾👀⚠️>Hen
Maddie< I think I knew for sure after the tsunami. Buck called me, completely wrecked because he didn’t know how to tell Eddie they were there.
Chimney< 🪓💪😙
Chimney< What about you cap?
Bobby< The tsunami was when I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
Bobby< No one else saw them after they took that live round out of the guy’s leg in the back of the ambulance. My gut knew then.
Maddie< Wasn’t that Eddie’s first week at the 118????
Chimney< IT WAS!
Bobby< I don’t think they were in love then. But I knew they would end up here.
Bobby< Buck was actually flustered when Eddie complimented him.
“Flustered!” Karen exclaimed. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Buck flustered.” Hen gazed down at her wife who was laying across the couch with her head in Hen’s lap. Hen had been absentmindedly playing with Karen’s hair (which Karen loved) and had a few strands wrapped around her knuckles.
Chimney< You know that Eddie got under Buck’s skin that very first day
Chimney< If Buck hadnt been so wrapped up in Abby back then things would be so much easier now
Athena< I hate to say our Buck needed his heart broken, but the heartbreak from Abby certainly helped him get to where he is today.
Athena< We got front row seats to Buck maturing these past few years.
Buck 3.0 🙈🤣🙄 >Hen
Carla< He really has come so far ❤🙌🏼
Maddie, how is your plan coming along? 👀 >Hen
Maddie< So I'm thinking of asking him to meet me at this new trendy vegan restaurant, but I can’t think of a good reason for standing him up and suggesting he go with Eddie 🤔
Karen< He would jump at the chance to try a new vegan restaurant! 🌱🤤
Carla< Oh he would love that, not so sure about Eddie though 🥩
Maddie< Exactly
Chimney< Hes so pretentious
Maddie< Honestly, I figured Eddie would go because Buck asked. But even if he refused Buck would probably pick just another restaurant
Maddie< I just can’t think of a plausible excuse for bailing
Maddie< Buck is too good at telling when I am lying 🤥😔
Chimney< Tell him you’re having contractions! 🤰👶
He would just rush off to the hospital, Chim > Hen
Bobby< He would just want to be at Maddie’s side
Karen< No, he would just want to be there for Maddie
Chimney< Alright, alright, hes too good of a brother for that 🙏
Chimney< 🙄🙄
Hen looked at the time and sighed. “You okay with making dinner, while I do some homework?” she asked.
“Of course, babe,” Karen said, smiling up at her. “Just give me 5 more minutes on the couch with you.”
“Anything for you,” Hen said, leaning down to kiss her wife’s forehead.

Chimney
Maddie was at a doctor’s appointment and Chimney, upset at not being able to go and bored at home on his own, invited Buck and Albert to go on a short hike. It was a small trail that had only just opened up after the mudslide, and while Albert was a little disappointed it wasn’t a more difficult trail he at least understood that Buck and Chimney both were hesitant to embark on a long trail with Maddie so close to her due date. The trail was fairly empty so they had taken their masks off, though Chimney was a bit weirded out by how naked he felt without it while in public. With Albert running ahead and out of earshot, Chimney decided it was a good time to ask Buck about his love life.
And naturally- he was incredibly awkward about it.
“So, Buck 3.0?”
“Yeah?”
“Is he gonna dip his toe in the dating pool anytime soon?”
Buck let out a huff of breath, looking down at his feet. “Buck 3.0 is about letting go of the past, but honestly? I still don’t think that I’m really in the right headspace to be dating now. Therapy is helping, but it’s not an overnight process. It’s a lot of work letting go of nearly 30 years of low self esteem and abandonment issues.”
“You’ll get there,” Chim said, clapping Buck on the back. “You’re honestly one of the best people ever, Buck.” Buck looked over at him with a single raised eyebrow. “I will deny it if you tell anyone.” He pointed a finger a Buck for emphasis. “But you are my favorite brother.”
Buck’s face cracked into a brilliant smile and he put his hands over his heart. “Oh, Chim, do you mean it? Really and truly??”
Chimney laughed and gave Buck a shove. “I hope it echoes in your ears for the rest of your life because I’m never repeating it.”
“It’s okay. I’m Albert’s favorite brother too.”
“You are not!”
“And Albert has no problems telling me every time I wash his clothes.”
“You wash his clothes for him! Buck, never, ever give Albert anything he will never be able to take care of himself!”
“I don’t mind the laundry, so I don’t make a big deal about it. I do Eddie’s laundry sometimes too.”
“You do Eddie’s laundry?” Chimney asked, eyebrows raised high above his aviator sunglasses.
“Eddie hates doing laundry, and I mean hates. I’ve been over there while he was switching loads and he was grumbling under his breath the entire time. So sometimes if Eddie lets it pile up for too long I’ll do a couple loads while I’m there.”
“You do Eddie’s laundry?” Chim asked again, eyebrows still raised high. It was actually getting a little painful, so he let them relax and come back down. He couldn’t believe this. How domestic. He was definitely telling that to the group chat.
“Yeah, man, it’s not a big deal. Laundry helps my brain calm down. I focus on the clothes and not on all the negative shit running around up here.” He tapped his temple with his first finger, looking down at his feet again.
There was a couple jogging towards them so the conversation stalled while Chimney and Buck pulled out their masks and put them on.
They were quiet as the couple passed them, nodding in greeting and continuing on their way. When Chimney pulled his mask back off he asked, “So what happened with Eddie and the teacher?”
Buck looked over at him, eyebrows raised again as he tucked his mask into his pocket. “He didn’t really say,” Buck answered.
“He didn’t?” Chim asked. “Doesn’t he, like, tell you everything?”
“Usually. But you know Eddie. He processes things on his own time, and when he’s ready he talks about it. All he would say was that she is the one who ended it and that he wasn’t really that bothered because it was just casual and now he doesn’t have to talk to Christopher about him dating.”
“Christopher would be okay with him dating, though, right?”
“I think he would,” Buck answered. “He is legitimately the best kid I have ever met, and he wants his dad to be happy.” Buck looked at his feet here and Chimney noticed his cheeks were a little more red than before. “Chris told me once he wants his dad to date me.” He chuckled awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck.
Chimney knew this already, because Maddie had told him what Carla said. He was very interested in how red Buck was turning though, another thing to report to the group chat. “Christopher wants you to date his dad?”
"If I date his dad then we can hang out all the time."
"You would love that." Chimney gave Buck a little shove. "Well all know Christopher is your favorite person in the entire world."
"He is," Buck agreed. He shoved Chimney back a little harder so that Chimney veered off the trail briefly. "He's better than you lot by miles."
They were quiet for a moment and Chimney debated whether or not he should ask. In the end his mouth won and he asked, "Would you?" Buck glanced over at Chimney but didn't say anything. "Date Eddie?" he clarified.
Buck turned an alarming shade of red and opened his mouth to respond when they heard Albert call to them.
"What are you two doing?" He was running towards them, sweaty and grinning. "I made it to the end of the trail and halfway back! Pick up your pace!!"
Buck grinned and took off running. Chimney took out his phone and started texting.

Athena
May was working, Bobby had run out to the store, and Harry was still staying with Michael so Athena found herself with a rare, quiet evening. She poured herself a glass of wine and headed to the table on the back patio. The Operation Idiots in Love chat she had started had been pretty active that day but Athena hadn’t had the chance to look through it until now. When she was all caught up with Chimney’s discussion with Buck and everyone’s reactions she sent off a “Sounds like they’re already dating…” and placed her phone face down on the table.
Over the years she had come to think of Buck as her step son of sorts and after seeing his heart break so many times, she just wanted him to finally be happy. Athena wasn’t one to believe that a person needed to be in a relationship in order to be happy, but the only time she had seen Buck looking genuinely content and happy was when he was around Eddie.
Plus she had been a cop for 30 years. She was an expert on picking up on the things left unsaid. She had no doubt that both of them wanted something more, but they were both too terrified of being rejected by the person they depend on the most.
Maddie’s plan was half cooked, at least, and Athena didn’t think that it would really work the way that they wanted it to - and not just because Eddie refused to eat vegan.
She was contemplating possible plans when Bobby returned. He dropped the groceries in the kitchen and came outside, hands falling on Athena’s shoulders and dropping a kiss to the top of her head.
“You’re radiating your Sergeant Grant energy,” he said as he pulled out the chair next to her. She just raised her patented Athena Eyebrow at him. “Lay it on me.” Bobby waved a hand between them. “What are you planning?”
“Nothing yet. Just thinking about what could work.”
“For Buck and Eddie?” “Mhmm.” Athena sipped her wine.
“You don’t think they need to get together in their own time? What if whatever ‘Operation’ we all come up with backfires and ruins their relationship?” The air quotes around ‘operation’ were very clear in his tone.
“I think that their relationship, as it is, is strong enough to withstand any sort of awkwardness that we may create if it backfires.” Bobby still looked skeptical. “Look, Buck and Eddie have both been burned in the past. And now they have essentially built their entire lives on top of each other. Co-dependant is how most people would think of it. They’re both terrified of losing each other so neither one of them will ever make the first move. They just need a little nudge. Something to get them both open their damn eyes and look at each other.”
“Okay,” Bobby said, nodding. “We need to keep Chimney and Hen reined in though. They seem to be a little too invested in this.”
“Agreed.”
“How about we have them over for dinner? Just the two of them and the two of us.”
“Mmm a double date?” Athena gave a second, totally different, patented Athena Eyebrow.
“That’s the goal isn’t it?” Bobby stood up pulling out his phone. “I’ll text them.”
“Have it be next Friday,” Athena called. “May will be working late that day.”
“Alright.” Bobby disappeared inside the house and Athena turned back to her wine. She picked up her own phone to text Hen and Michael about the three boys - Harry, Denny, and Christopher - having a much needed sleepover. Harry had been missing his friends since the pandemic started, and if it was just a small group Athena didn’t think they would have to worry too much.
Twenty minutes later Michael was added to Operation Idiots in Love and Athena was texting Eddie to see if Christopher could sleepover Michael’s next Friday.

Hi! I'm a gay fan of 911 and I have a question about the whole Buddie fandom. As much as I like Buck and Eddie, it's frustrating that a HUGE part of the fandom is pushing for these two characters to get together instead of putting energy into supporting Hen & Carla and Michael & Dave. Not to mention Carlos and TK in Lone Star. Can you explain to me the appeal of wanting these two men together? Wouldn't it be more interesting to see two heterosexual males just be able to bond in a non-toxic fashion? That's something we don't get to see often on television.
Hey! This is MAD long lmao I am so sorry! You caught me on a day I felt like talking! Also this took like a year to answer you lolololol. This does have a few ʻhot takesʻ so please be warned! So like in this essay....
So first I am also apart of the LGBTQIA+ community, so I do understand how it could come across as a fetish or being non supportive of the current canonically LGBTQIA+ characters, however I think a lot of the interest around Buddie and the want for them to be confirmed as a couple is how they are being written. Me personally I knew since s2 e1 Buck and Eddie were written not as rivals but as two people who would eventually become friends, but it wasn’t until the Christmas episode with the elf assuming Buck was Chris’s dad and Eddie’s partner that I was like ‘hold on!’ because I was really hoping Abbey would return and I didn’t see Eddie as a possible Buck live interest because of that. The elf’s comment wasn’t played off like most other shows would (think Dean and Sam arriving anywhere in Supernatural) it made me go back and look at the other episodes to see exactly how Buck and Eddie were being framed/written. And as we have moved into further seasons I think there has been a shift in how Buddie is being written, in s3 it was very much like two people progressing into a deeper friendship then the blood clot/lawsuit gets in the way and they both have to deal with emotions surrounding that, then Buck’s response to Eddie being trapped (we see how is he when Boddy is trapped in a fire WITH A GUNMAN, it’s emotional but not to the point is is with Eddie), even the love interests feel very pushed on us and there’s so little banter between Buddie about their gfs and how they feel about these new beginnings. It feels off, not like a friendship in the slightest, more like two people trying to force something and not wanting to deal with any other feelings. Then when Eddie gets shot and reveals Buck is Chris’s legal Guardian in the event Eddie dies, that’s huge, and he did this after only a year of knowing Buck (I have friends with kids. I’ve known one of them for FIVE years, I’m at their house every week, the kid calls me family. I’m person #10 on the list of ‘who gets my kid if I die’, not #1 lol) It just feels like it’s all building up to something, and people are getting tired of waiting for that something! We’re all emotionally tired from the past two years, and probably from many shows queerbaiting us and this is something that could happen, seems to be something the actors are ok with and the fans want. So why do they keep drawing it out. This isn’t about us demanding they ignore the chance to write a healthy platonic male friendship, or forcing two characters to be gay, it’s about holding the writers to what they’ve implied and seeing what could come of it.
Also think of it like this; If Buddie is confirmed it will still be a good example of a healthy friendship which then developed into something else, like Booth/Bones! Showing the natural progression of friendship to relationship that happens a lot in real life. It’s two men who previously (on screen at least) have only been with woman, but now they have an emotionally connection with someone which they then develop and explore. This could be 911’s first nontoxic depiction of two gay characters coming together, because sorry not sorry the canon couples aren’t perfect (which does humanize them) but they also reenforce harmful troupes that plaque the LGBTQIA+ community, which I’m sure you understand: TK was a drug addict, who only got with Carlos at first cause he was hot and sex was TK’s new addition (all gay men are sex addicts who do drugs and sleep with anything that moves). Carlos was ashamed and wanted to keep TK on the downlow (poc gay men want to pretend to be straight but have free access to gay sex). Hen cheated on Karen seemingly the first chance she got (lesbians can’t handle monogamy when pushed, and cheat on their long term partners). All known and documented troupes that happen far too often.
I’m not saying Buddie is some gay jesus ship that’s gonna save the entertainment industry but if done right it could prove to be one of the few healthy depictions of two men getting into a gay relationship we have. If they plan it out correctly, show us the relationship development, like they did with Maddie/Chim for example, Buddie could be used as a positive example of a gay fictional relationship (I really could go into depth about this. I probably should tbh).
As for not supporting Hen and KAREN, or Michael and DAVID, I think fans do support them! The writers don’t. If you read fanfics Henren and Michael/David are featured heavily in many fics, and ik some people might say ‘well they’re only there so Buddie can talk about their gay side!!’ but both these couples have their own fans and fanfic tags! They aren’t just plot devices in Buddie stories. There is a huge side of the fandom that supports Henren and wants to see more of them and their family. Same with Michael and David, during the episode where Michael and Bobby team up to find that plastic surgeon who was working illegally many people where ecstatic that we were getting more Michael/David content and that David was getting more than a couple lines. But sadly it seems like the writers only want to delve into these story lines when they need filler, they even miss opportunities to include these other LGBTQIA+ characters when it makes sense;
(Someone came for me about this but I am going to bring it up again)
When Chris is sad and wants more human connection, instead of bring Harry + Michael/David and Denny+Nia+Henren back into the picture (and yes I understood at the time the pandemic was bad (lmao still is!!), but all the actors at some point would have/had crossed over into each other’s ‘bubbles’, so ALL the actors would have been exposed to each other so getting the children together with adults they had ALREADY been with during shooting wouldn’t have been a super spreader event) but instead they brought in Ana after only two on screen dates and pretended like it was a logical thing for someone who’s up to that point been extremely careful with their child.
They really could have pushed the ‘118 is a family!’ message here and included the canonically gay supporting characters, and the lesbian main character(s) but they did not and instead chose to push the Ana/Eddie coupling even though they hadn’t properly developed it yet. The writers themselves don’t seem to care about developing their canonically gay characters and including them more than they have to but fans are continuously developing Henren and Michael/David with hc and fics.
I’d like to use your logic against you for a second, in s1 we have a very healthy, platonic friendship between Chim/Bobby but that got written out to the point they are more like boss/employee unless the scene calls for them to seem closer, we now have Bobby and Michael friendship but again we hardly see Michael. On Lone Star we have Owen and Judd as a really, really good example of a healthy male friendship but we see Judd more often with Tommy now then we do with Owen, and in s2 it’s overshadowed by Owen trusting Charlie from Twilight and constantly getting fucked over! Why can’t the writter just be happy with these happy, healthy, emotionally well male-male friendship they’ve already included and expand upon them. There’s enough drama because the show literally involves burning buildings and people’s lives being at risk from some natural/man made disaster ever 12 seconds. Does it need to have so much interpersonal conflict and male peacocking??

coda/missing scene to 4x05 because i, once again, had too many feelings. read on ao3
Eddie Diaz is good at compartmentalizing. He’s great at it, at putting his emotions in a box and locking it to focus on the task at hand. Needs to be good at it to be able to do his job, be it in the army or now, as a firefighter. He doesn’t get to panic when one of his coworkers is in danger.
He still nearly loses it when he and Bobby hear that Buck’s still in the factory.
It’s not a surprise, not really - of course Buck disobeyed a direct order to make sure every last person gets out alive, and of course he doesn’t think about himself. It’s one of the things Eddie loves him for. But the sheer terror of hearing Buck explain over the radio that there’s no way out almost overrides his training. Almost.
For a second, he’s ready to run right back in, on his own if he has to, to find Buck and get him out, somehow, he has to-
Then Buck is on the radio, alive, still okay, and the incident commander tells him that a rescue team is coming in to find them, and Eddie forces himself to stay calm and focused, to be of help where he can be the most useful. And then the factory blows behind them.
Chimney, Hen, Cap, him, they all spin around in shock and Eddie can just stare at the balls of fire and the smoke billowing, feeling paralyzed. The rational part of his brain is already clocking that it wasn’t the whole factory, probably just one of the tanks full of flammable gas, and probably not anywhere near where Buck is, even though he didn’t seem sure about where that was over the radio. His heart, hammering against his ribs, takes a little longer to catch up and Eddie has to press his shaking hands against his thighs for a second.
He’s got himself under control by the time they’re being sent in.
Outside of the factory, he can’t bring himself to look at Buck for too long. He’s over by an ambulance with Bobby, having been checked over quickly, and the look on his face is something Eddie doesn’t quite know how to deal with. But he’s got Bobby there, and Hen, so Eddie has to trust he’ll be fine.
He and Chim checked the victim over, giving him oxygen and getting him ready to be transported to the hospital. He’ll probably be fine in a few weeks, the smoke inhalation shouldn’t have caused lasting damage, and his leg is clearly broken but not crushed. Buck saved his life.
“Tell your friend,” Saleh says on a cough, gripping Eddie’s arm after they’ve moved him onto the ambulance, “thank you. Thank you.”
“I’ll tell him,” Eddie promises, fixing the oxygen mask over his face again. “Breathe.”
They ride in the back of the ambulance mostly in silence, checking Saleh’s vitals and focusing all of their energy on him.
It’s only on the way back to the station that Chimney says, “So that was a bit too close for comfort, huh?”
Eddie lets out a humourless laugh. “You could say that.”
“You think he should’ve been working today?”
“I think,” Eddie says slowly, “that he needed to not be alone with his thoughts today. And I don’t think he could’ve done his job any better today.”
“Yeah, no, he did everything right,” Chimney says hurriedly, “that’s not what I meant. I just...worry about him.”
Eddie looks at his drawn eyebrows and hunched shoulders and thinks about the way Chimney has been acting around Buck for the past few days, like he’s walking on eggshells, careful but ready to jump to his defence at any time, and knows he’s being honest. “Yeah, me too.”
The way Buck called himself spare parts, defective parts this morning is still echoing in his head. He didn’t know what to say or do to make Buck feel better, still doesn’t. Whenever he’s tried to talk about any of it for the past few days, Buck has been quick about brushing him off, with humor or sometimes anger, though that was always directed at his parents and never at Eddie.
He gets it, is the thing, knows all too well what it’s like to keep things to himself, to not want to talk to anyone about them. He just didn’t know what it’s like on the other side of things. All he wants is for Buck to know that none of this is on him, that his parents are the one who fucked up and didn’t do their job. A job that should be the easiest in the world. Eddie knows how easy it is to love your child unconditionally. He also knows how easy it is to love Buck.
One day soon, he’s gonna find a way to prove to Buck how loved he is. If that means coming clean to him about his feelings, then so be it - he’s been thinking about it for so long now that he’s pretty sure Buck wouldn’t ever leave him and Chris, even if he can’t reciprocate Eddie’s feelings. Buck deserves to hear that someone loves him for him.
Back at the station, Eddie showers and changes into a clean uniform, and when he’s walking up the stairs, Buck’s parents are there. He knows it’s them immediately and catches Hen’s eyes across the room, her eyebrows raised.
“Is Buck back yet?” he asks her, voice low as he sits down on the couch next to her.
She shakes her head. “Bobby went to the hospital with him, just to make sure he’s really fine. I don’t think he knows they’re here.”
Eddie looks over at them, and has to press his hands to his thighs again at the sudden rush of hatred that he feels for these people. He doesn’t want to imagine what it must feel like to lose a child, but it gives them no excuse to treat their living, breathing children the way they did. The way Buck has been acting these past few days is their fault, it’s their fault he’s been feeling like he wasn’t enough his whole life, and Eddie hates them for it.
“Has anyone talked to them?”
“Chim did, when they came in,” Hen says, “and I kind of wanna give them a piece of my mind. You look like you do, too.”
Eddie gives her a wry smile. “That obvious?”
Hen scrunches her nose and gives him a kind smile. “Yeah. I can’t imagine ever treating my children like that. And I think they should know what they’re missing out on with Buck.”
Eddie couldn’t agree more, and before he knows it, he’s pushing himself up from the couch and walking over to them.
They both look up with matching expressions of polite confusion, and Eddie grits his teeth and sits down without asking.
“Mr and Mrs Buckley?” he asks. “I’m Eddie Diaz, I work with your son.”
“Do you know where he is?” Mrs Buckley asks. “Howard said he didn’t know.”
Depending on when Chimney talked to them, that’s probably even true, but Eddie wouldn’t hold it against him if he was just trying to get away from his parents-in-law as quickly as possible. “He’s at the hospital.”
“Oh, what did he do now?” Mr Buckley’s voice sounds long-suffering, as if his son being in the hospital is a nuisance more than anything else.
“His job,” Eddie bites out. “He did his job and saved someone’s life tonight. Do you even know the kind of man your son is? He goes above and beyond for everyone. He risks his life to save others - did you know he saved dozens of people during the tsunami, including my son, while he wasn’t even a firefighter? Of course you didn’t. He shows up for his friends time and time again and he puts everyone else before himself. He’s a good man, a great man, something he certainly didn’t learn from you-”
There’s a hand on his shoulder and he cuts off, the sudden silence making him aware of how loud his voice has gotten, and he looks up at Hen, almost expecting her to tell him to shut up, but she’s looking at Buck’s parents with narrowed eyes.
“With all due respect,” she says, and Eddie has never heard her voice like this, this hard and cold, “but Buck deserves better than what he got from you. He’s not just a valued member of this station, he’s family. I’m happy to tell you some stories about him, if you’re interested in hearing them, because I agree with Eddie that you should at least know what kind of person he has become in spite of you.”
Mr and Mrs Buckley look almost chastised, speechless, and Hen drops into the chair next to Eddie. His hands are shaking again and Eddie doesn’t think he can sit here with them any longer, certainly doesn’t have any nice things to say to them, so he decides to let Hen handle it from here on. She’s clearly got it under control.
Wordlessly, he stands up and goes downstairs to wait for Buck instead.
When Bobby parks the car, Eddie spreads his arms expectantly, relief flooding his veins when he announces that Buck got a clean bill of health from the doctor.
“Glad to hear it,” he says, but can’t help giving Buck a once-over just to make sure for himself. He’s also showered and wearing a clean uniform, looking miles better than earlier, but there’s still that sadness around his eyes and mouth that Eddie hates.
“Show off,” he teases him as Bobby rushes off, and Buck smiles at him.
“I had to do it.”
All Eddie wants is to go up to him and pull him into his arms to keep him safe from the world, but this is neither the time or the place. Instead, he just puts as much of that feeling as he can in his smile and tells Buck, “I know you did.” Then, a little reluctantly, he nods his head towards the stairs. “You’ve got some visitors.”
Buck leaves with one last look, a frown on his face, and Eddie watches him go. No matter how this conversation is going to go, Buck has a lot of shit to work through.
First and foremost, he needs to talk to Maddie because Eddie knows how much they love each other and how miserable this situation is making them both. And then he’ll need to start believing that they love him - Maddie, the whole crew, Christopher. Eddie. That he’s worth that love. And Eddie will do everything in his power to make him believe that.

I'm already done with some fans over next episode. They're already saying that they don't like how they're "bullying" Buck in the promo 🙄 like we said last week! Go outside and make some friends cause that isnt bullying!
....... what lmao
they know that eddie is always sassing buck right?
and that hen loves buck unconditionally?
it’s called friendly teasing, folks, and it happens! we know buck has a backbone. do you think if he was upset about it that he’d let it continue?
are some fans even watching the same show?
can we please please PLEASE stop acting like buck isn’t a grown man. he’s stood up for himself MORE THAN ONCE. we know he can do it!!!! ifyou think buck wouldn’t say to eddie “wow dude that shit hurts can you stop” then let me tell you... you don’t actually know buck as well as you think you do.
buck, eddie, hen, the rest of the firefam deserve better than this mess. you’re doing a disservice to them if you think they can’t AND WON’T stand up for themselves. they’re fully fleshed humans and yes, sometimes buck does things for other people because he thinks that’s what they want, but he would never let someone walk all over him!
the firefam ostracizing and bullying him? NEVER HAPPEN and not just because buck would go over bobby’s head (which he’s DONE BEFORE) and object BUT ALSO because they NEVER WOULD. they were told they couldn’t talk to him which is something you ABIDE BY. (i mean this whole point is moot because as if this would ever happen in rl lmao) BUT the idea that the entire firefam, including hen and chim and eddie, would ever be outwardly CRUEL? ridinkydonk. (in before people are like BUT EDDIE CALLED HIM EXHAUSTING: get. the fuck. over it. buck has! buck knows eddie didn’t mean it. because buck recognises what eddie was going through. imagine best friends? understanding each other? STRANGE.)
buck hurting himself and nobody else knowing? NEVER HAPPEN. if you think for one second bobby, hen, EDDIE, MADDIE, wouldn’t notice buck hurting himself? what the fuck are you watching.
eddie punching/hurting/physically abusing buck? please don’t get me started on this one because you dont get to write eddie if you don’t understand basic fundamentals of who he is.
we love to write things into fic, have things in headcanon that we love to put our characters through, but even when you suspend desbelief, it has to be true to the CHARACTERS. otherwise you might as well slap an “original work; original character/original character” tag on it because that is what you are doing!
yes, everyones interpretations are different, but not so different that you think a 29 year old man is being bullied by coworkers who often tease him AND WHO HE OFTEN TEASES IN RETURN.
anyway. this fandom lol.

Pairing: Evan “Buck” Buckley/Eddie Diaz Rated: General Summary: “I’ve recently found myself with a lot of time on my hands and since you don’t seem to have enough to romance someone,” Buck began, settling his drink on the table, “I think it only makes sense for someone to romance you.”
Eddie huffed out a laugh and shot back, “Yeah, and how are you going to find someone willing to put in that effort?”
“Oh, you’re lookin’ at him.”
Or… Eddie gets the romance he deserves in the form of fluff-filled dates with Buck.
For @911fluffweek - day six: “But you love me anyway” // In your lap
(read chapter six on ao3 or start from the beginning)
Eddie found himself to be just as nervous standing on the step to Maddie’s home as he had been those few months ago. Back then, he was terrified of meeting his team’s families and having to somehow keep himself at arm’s length. He glanced over at where Buck gripped his hand tightly and realized just how badly he had failed at that task.
“You know, you have to knock on the door, Eds,” Buck said, furrowing his eyebrows in equal parts confusion and concern.
“Deja vu,” Eddie muttered, raising his hand to do just that. Before he could, the door flung open and Maddie stood before them, a wide grin on her face.
“Little brother!” She shouted and Buck rolled his eyes at the name before wrapping his arms around his sister’s waist and hugging her tightly. Eddie loved the way Buck hugged. He always put his entire body into it, rocking from side to side with his arms enveloping every inch he could. He loved watching Buck hug others and the way their smiles lit up their faces almost as much as he enjoyed being on the receiving end of one of his embraces.
“Hey, Mads,” he muttered, kissing her hair as he pulled back. “Where’s my favorite goddaughter?” He asked excitedly. Before Eddie could even so much as say hello, he was already making his way into the living room and picking Jee-Yun out of her pack-and-play to blow raspberries into her neck.
“Has he always been like that?” Eddie asked, giving Maddie a one-armed hug and holding up the bottle of wine he had to insist Buck pick up. He never went to a home empty-handed and Buck never felt like a guest anywhere, so it was a miracle Eddie had convinced him to grab it in the first place.
“He loves kids. Babies, toddlers, eight-year-olds with cute dads,” Maddie teased, winking at Eddie when he tried to stifle a laugh. “Even when we were teenagers, he was always looking after younger kids. Saving them from bullies, playing with them when they had no friends, sitting with them at family gatherings. It’s probably cause he’s such a kid at heart,” Maddie said, watching her brother fondly as he set Jee-Yun back down and walked over.
He wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist before he said, “She’s the cutest baby I’ve ever seen, Maddie. Are you sure she’s yours and Chimney’s?” Maddie smacked him with the towel she had over her shoulder and rolled her eyes.
“Here I was telling your boyfriend all about how great you are with kids, alluding to what a great dad you’ll be someday,” she said pointedly causing both of them to go wide-eyed, “and you insult me. Little brothers are always so ungrateful.”
“I’ll be sure to tell Christopher that,” Eddie chuckled. He froze when he realized what he had said and had never been more grateful for a doorbell in his life.
The rest of the team and their families arrived over the next few minutes and all of Eddie’s nerves washed away just like they had the first time. He was comfortable around his team, around the people he trusted every day with his life, and with much more than that if he was honest with himself. More importantly, Buck was a calming weight beside him that reminded him he wasn’t alone.
“Howie and I thought it would be fun to do our little version of The Newlywed Game,” Maddie said once everyone had their drink of choice in hand. “So, everyone have a seat…” She gestured around, frowning at what Eddie assumed was the shortage of chairs.
“I counted out before—”
“You forgot to include yourself, didn’t you?” Maddie guessed and Chim didn’t say she was wrong. Eddie shrugged and stood behind the comfortable recliner Buck had planted himself in, reaching around to rest his hands on Buck’s shoulders and massaging gently.
“Hey, that’s okay,” Eddie said quickly, not wanting to be the person that inconvenienced the rest of the party. “I’m totally good with standing and I’ll kick his lazy ass out of the chair if he gets too annoying,” Eddie added when Maddie stared worriedly in his direction. Eddie winked at her as Buck gasped dramatically, tugging on one of Eddie’s hands.
“You wouldn’t dare,” Buck challenged and Eddie wouldn’t admit he was right. “Besides, this chair is absolutely big enough to support the two of us, even if you’ve been eating extra bites of the desserts Christopher and I make when we’re not looking,” Buck accused.
“No, seriously, Buck, it’s—” He was already tumbling onto Buck’s lap before he could finish his sentence.
It was awkward at first as his hands flew out to try and grab onto the back of the chair and the armrest when he felt himself start falling. Eddie wasn’t a small guy, by any account. He was just under 200 pounds of muscle from years in the military and kept up with his physique with most mornings spent in the gym or hauling around 60 pounds of gear each day. Suddenly, though, he felt so small.
Buck wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist and rested his chin comfortably in the crook between Eddie’s neck and shoulder. He let his legs fall open so that Eddie could slot between them and Eddie let himself form to Buck’s warm body. He leaned into Buck’s touch, resting his own arms on the ones secured around him, and ignored the incredibly pointed gazes of his team.
Chim tossed his hands up in the air and defeatedly said, “Oh, they’re totally going to win.”
He wasn’t wrong, but Eddie attributed that to the fact that out of all of the couples around them, they were the newest. Hen and Karen had been together the longest out of all of the couples, working on ten years of marriage by the time Eddie joined the team. Bobby and Athena had six years under their belt and were just as ‘disgustingly in love’ as the day they met—Chim’s words, not his. He didn’t have much room to talk, though, because he and Maddie were almost at three years and it would take a crowbar to pry them apart when they were together.
About an hour into the game, Hen made it clear that one of the happy couples would meet their bitter end while Maddie became increasingly more annoyed that Eddie seemed to know more about her brother than she did.
“Why would you possibly know when Eddie and I had our first kiss?” Buck seethed as Maddie rolled her eyes in frustration. “You didn’t even know when you and your husband had your first kiss!” It was the wrong thing to say and they both knew it as Buck hid his face behind Eddie’s neck.
Maddie didn’t care as she yelled, “He’s the one who didn’t know! I was right and I know it!” She grabbed a handful of popcorn from the neatly plated platter in between them and tossed it at Buck, effectively only coating Eddie in the snack. He held his hands up in defense just as Chim did.
“Hey, I was in a hospital bed and I thought we had kissed then. I was on a lot of pain medication, Maddie, you can’t blame me for that!”
“And you can’t throw food at me because your brother is a coward!” Eddie shot back, wriggling in Buck’s lap when he poked his fingers into Eddie’s sides in retaliation.
“Can someone read the next question, please?” Bobby said in that commanding tone that had all of them muffling their laughter and ongoing arguments.
“Alright, Bobby and Athena are up,” Chim said, clapping his hands together. “If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d buy together?” Athena started to write down her answer and Buck attempted to it, leaning over a bit too far considering the space Eddie took up on his lap. Eddie elbowed Buck in the ribs and pulled a face he hoped clearly told him to stop cheating before the team got even angrier at them. Buck pressed a messy kiss to his cheek and pretended he wasn’t even trying to peek.
“What d’ya say, Cap?”
“Athena is too smart to let us spend money on anything. It’s going straight into a college fund for Harry and May,” Bobby answered, crossing his arms over his chest smugly. It was called for because Athena turned over her board to reveal the word COLLEGE spelled out in all caps. She cheered and pressed a big kiss to Bobby’s lips.
“Lucky round, we all knew the answer to that one,” Hen teased, patting Karen’s thigh as she turned toward Chim for their question. “Hit us up, Han. We’re kicking all of your asses,” she commented.
Buck chimed in, “Except for us!” It was a reminder that literally no one needed and they all glared daggers in Buck’s direction. Eddie didn’t mind the way Buck hid behind him that time. He laced their fingers together, bringing one up to his mouth for a soft kiss as Chim read out the next question.
“What was the last date that you went on?” Buck stifled his laughter in Eddie’s shoulder the second both Hen and Karen’s eyes widened in panic. Athena was brazen as always and allowed hers to ring loudly over everyone.
“Oh, c’mon ladies, really?” Athena shouted. Hen glared at her while Karen wrote down—and then crossed out and then wrote something else—on her board. She shook her head guiltily at her wife when the timer buzzed.
“The reason we’re kicking all of your asses is cause you know the answers to those ridiculous questions about your partner’s childhood pet but can’t even remember when you last got them flowers,” Buck pointed out. The looks on everyone’s faces told Eddie that while he shouldn’t have said it, he was absolutely right.
“Yeah, well, what was Eddie’s first job, then?” Maddie shot back to which Eddie sighed because Buck knew the answer to that. They had talked about it one night when Eddie was explaining why he enlisted in the army in the first place.
Buck smirked and answered, “Easy. Technically, he worked construction with his uncle before he turned 18 but he was paid under the table,” he paused for only a moment before finishing, “and he enlisted in the United States Army almost the second he was old enough to.” He held up his hand for a high five but Eddie gauged the looks around him and decided his team already hated him enough for one night.
“Hen, what’s your answer?” He asked, knowing that out of everyone in the room, Hen would be the one to get him out of the situation he found himself in. She took pity, if only so that they could get their round over with, and took a deep breath with her eyes closed.
“Alright, I had the day off three weeks ago but Denny was sick and the day off before that was spent getting the foster twins settled…” Hen looked up at the ceiling and let out the breath she was holding slowly. “We went to that Japanese steak house and sushi bar a few months ago?” Karen cheered and flipped her board over revealing what Eddie assumed was the name of the restaurant Hen had been talking about. Karen leaned over and kissed her wife soundly, both of them glaring over at Buck who waved his hand dismissively.
“Will you stop pissing off our friends, please?” Eddie whispered while Maddie and Chim prepared themselves for their round. Buck shook his head and hiked himself up a little in the chair causing Eddie to immediately panic. He had almost forgotten that the two of them were sharing a damn chair like teenagers who thought they were in love. Eddie made to get up as he said, “Do you need me to—”
Buck grabbed onto his arms and shook his head, smiling softly up at him. “I’m good, just had to reposition. Just let me…” As if Eddie weighed nothing, Buck moved him to a more comfortable position still on his lap and Eddie let out a very embarrassing yelp at the suddenness of the motion. He wasn’t used to being… manhandled, the way Buck had apparently been comfortable with doing.
“We have a spare bedroom if you two need some privacy,” Maddie offered, gesturing over her shoulder and down the hallway. The entire team groaned in displeasure while Buck flipped her off, but she shrugged and mouthed, The offer still stands, in Eddie’s direction.
“Babe, pay attention,” Chim began, earning an eyebrow raise from his wife. He grinned at her as he usually did, and asked, “Describe what you first thought of me in one word.”
“Maddie, now’s your chance to really let him know how you feel,” Buck teased, egging her on with an excited nod of his head. Maddie rolled her eyes in response and as she wrote her answer on the board, she gestured between her and Chim’s heads as if trying to somehow start some telepathic connection.
“I can’t believe Chim somehow found someone just as strange as he is,” Hen muttered much to the agreement of everyone around them. The couple in question didn’t care, though, because they were too busy staring at each other. Eddie thought it was cute, but apparently, everyone else was ready to get on with the game.
“Hey, weirdo, what’s your answer?” Bobby shouted and Buck let out a huff of laughter. It was always nice when Bobby let loose a little and he was seemingly at that point if the name he chose said anything.
“Cute. She thought I was cute,” he answered. Maddie turned her clipboard around slowly, beaming wider each second because she got the answer right. She cheered and pulled Chim into a very full kiss, both of them smiling into it.
“Alright, boys, we’re three for four this round. You get this right or wrong, you still win, so we’re gonna pick the toughest question,” Hen commented and before Buck could argue, Athena held up a hand and raised her eyebrows at him. It was the easiest way to shut him up and everyone there knew it.
“Oh, honey, this one. This is the one,” Athena said, laughter already brightening up her voice. Eddie winced even as Buck squeezed the arm still wrapped around his waist a little tighter in reassurance. Maddie let out a loud laugh before she read the next question out loud.
“Which one of you would Buck say is the most attractive in the relationship?”
“That is so not a fair question!” Buck whined immediately, grabbing the board from his sister to scribble his answer.
Eddie eyed him and at Buck’s inquisitive look, he said, “You answered that incredibly quickly.”
“Hey, no cheating. Eddie, what’s your answer? Who’s more attractive?” Chim asked and then let out a barely contained cackle. “Wait, oh my god, Eddie is either going to say himself which is going to sound extremely narcissistic or Buck is going to have his own name on that board which is the most egotistical answer and man, this question was genius. Athena, I would bow to you if I could.”
Eddie shook his head and glared at his captain’s wife, uncaring that he was there to witness it all. Bobby had a warm smile on his face that Eddie connected to the fact that he was there, with the family he said he wasn’t going to become a part of, laughing and teasing and cuddling up to his boyfriend of almost six months. It wasn’t where Eddie thought he’d be but where Bobby had assumed they’d end up.
He made a mental reminder to thank Bobby later.
“The answer is obviously Buck, but before you start with me,” he pointed at Chim accusingly before he continued, “it’s not because either of us are full of ourselves. It’s because he knows that I would never name myself in any situation. He knows we’re both equally attractive—”
“—And have tested it on many occasions!” Buck interjected but Eddie wasn’t about to explain to his team that they had competitions on who could get the most numbers when they went out together.
“He knows we’re both conventionally attractive men who would possibly fight someone for thinking otherwise but would never actually admit it about ourselves. He also knows that I would just argue with him if he said anything else. So,” he took a deep breath before he finished, “that board says Buck’s name.”
“I don’t think all of that could fit on a whiteboard, Eds,” Buck teased, but he flipped over the board to reveal his own name. Scribbled underneath was one short sentence, squished in the small space. It said, Because Eddie won’t let me say it’s him.
He wasn’t sure what came over him, but all of a sudden, Eddie had his arms tossed around Buck’s neck and their lips pressed together passionately, uncaring that his entire team was watching him. He had never had a connection like the one he had with Buck and this stupid game had solidified to Eddie that the fact they knew each other so well wasn’t all in his head. It made every part of Eddie so incredibly happy.
“Next game night, Buddie stays at home,” Chim said begrudgingly and Eddie didn’t mind that everyone around him agreed. He felt like a teenager again; sitting in the lap of the man he really, really loved, with warm arms wrapped around him, and what felt like a permanent smile on his face.
“Eh, we’ll just take the guest bedroom next time,” Buck shot back. Eddie blushed darker than he had been already, but he didn’t say anything in return. He just let Maddie and Chim tease, Hen and Karen roll their eyes, and Bobby and Athena watch the people they considered their ‘kids’ enjoy the night together.
It was as perfect as perfect could get, Eddie thought. Even when he felt his eyes drooping shut at the end of it all, he knew he would wake up to Buck in his bed and the feeling of family and home etched into his heart. He was starting to believe it would never disappear and he held onto it tighter just to be sure.

Buddie 507 meta
Tumblr media
The first thing that struck me about Buck and Taylor’s “detective” interaction is how much their lack of communication is spelled out. Buck and Eddie, as well as Buck and others from his chosen family (like Chim in this very ep or Maddie in 504) are shown to be bonded to such a degree that - even when it happens off screen - the show makes sure we know they share everything significant. And in this ep we have Buck and Taylor explicitly talking on screen about what they’re not communicating with each other. We already saw a glimpse of Buck not telling Taylor everything he witnessed on a call in ep 506, now it’s actually acknowledged between them. More than that, Taylor refers to him as a “source,” which shows he’s right not to share with her. After all, first responders are obviously free to talk about what they’ve been through with loved ones so they can carry on doing their difficult job, but not in order to expose and broadcast this info to the world. If Taylor has used info confided privately from Buck, it’s in that grey area we call “it’s kosher, but it still stinks.” That kinda adds to the moment where she grabbed Buck’s phone (which I mentioned in my 501 meta) as showing how limitless she is in pursuit of a story, causing her not to pay attention to other people’s boundaries. And then the ending makes it clear that Taylor’s drive in regards to her work comes from some personal history she hasn’t told him about, despite them being together for what, 4-5 months now? And despite supposedly being friends before that. IDK, but this does not feel like the friends to lovers, 200k, slow burn romance that shows love giving their popular protagonists. ~~~
Tumblr media
I had to make this gifset when I saw Taylor working on her case and Buck serving basically as a soundboard (which is further emphasized by Athena, in her exchange with Lou, being a more active contributor). Buck also came across as troubled and reserved. It immediately reminded me of what Buck was like when he was playing detective with Eddie in 404: he was the one who initiated posing investigative questions, Eddie went along with him, and they played off each other. In other words, Buck felt like an enthusiastic partner in that case, more than with his actual girlfriend. It could be implied from the end of the ep that the reason for the difference is his concern over Taylor risking her life, but he only learns about the risk Taylor takes later on. It continues a theme I highlighted in almost every meta post for this season, where their relationship feels a bit off even during moments that should make it seem to grow stronger. ~~~
Tumblr media
I found it curious how they handled Taylor in conjunction with the ep’s main call. Lou def doesn’t trust her and says he’ll leave a guard outside Edgar’s door because he’s sure she’ll try to sneak back in. In fact, her brush with Lou tells us the criticism is right, that she does go overboard when compared with others in the same profession, ‘coz Taylor’s not the first reporter Lou has had to handle, yet she manages to get a reaction out of him. Now the thing is, a lot of times this sort of mistrust is grounds for change and growth. Taylor could have somehow proven herself to Lou during her work on the case in parallel to him and ended up being invaluable to solving the case. Think, if you will, of Buck in 101. He annoys Athena right away, but ends up saving her life by the end of the ep. We learn she’s even said some kind things about him to Bobby… That’s not what happens with Taylor, she contributes nothing to the case, Lou’s impression of her at no point is disproven or changed. And let’s not forget, Lou’s presented as a good guy with sound judgment (NGL, I loved how he helped Harry in this ep). It’s clear to me that Taylor was turned into a part of the case as buildup for whatever her backstory is, but they could have used that as an opportunity to show us she’s better than how she’s perceived. But the show chose not to take that route. I point this out, ‘coz I think this has relevance for how her r/s with Buck will unfold. ~~~
Tumblr media
An interesting moment is when Buck confronts her at the end of the ep, asking if her job’s worth risking her life for. He adds he knows he’s basically the same. The thing is, they’re not. And I’m not talking about the saving lives aspect. Clearly, to Taylor telling a story is no less worth it than to save a life. And that’s a totally valid POV. But the thing is that with firefighting, putting one’s life on the line is a given. It’s built in. Sure, you wanna minimize the risks, but you know they exist no matter what, and that there’s an unavoidable risk you take that you might not return from a call. That’s not journalism, though. Especially not when you’re just a TV reporter for a local station. You can easily do the job without any significant risk. In my 506 meta I mentioned the difference between Ali’s concerned reaction to the risk Buck’s in vs Taylor’s far more subdued one. With this ep, it’s Buck who ends up in Ali’s position, and he also has a pretty subdued reaction (especially when compared to how worried he was about Eddie in 501 and 502).
The thing is, when you start dating a firefighter, you know you’re dating someone who’s constantly risking their lives (even if it might take you a while to figure out whether you can handle it). Not so when you start dating a reporter. It’s clear we’re going to get Taylor’s backstory. Now what they do with that back story, that’s another matter. Maybe it’ll make Buck understand her more and stay with her despite the cracks we have seen in their r/s, at least for the time being, or maybe it’ll drive home the point that they’re not compatible. Either way, I find it interesting that based on the build up, her secret being revealed seems to be tied in with whether Buck and her can stay together for now. That says something about how even showing her past isn’t making her a character in her own right. Because in contrast, every other ‘begins’ story has been about the character itself, even Josh’s, not about their current romantic relationships. And without being a character in her own right, her time on the show is bound to be limited. ~~~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another interesting point to me is that the most attention Buck and Taylor’s r/s has gotten is in an ep filled with stories about people being without their partners (Chim going after Maddie, Buck’s detective game being lackluster without Eddie), doubting their partners (Karen dealing with the ongoing effects of Hen’s cheating) and being enraged by their partners (the call). It sets a certain tone. Out of all of these, I couldn’t help focusing on Eddie’s absence. It’s almost like the place Eddie has in Buck’s life is so big, Taylor mostly gets to take up space when he’s not there.
Tumblr media
In this context, I really wanna highlight Karen and her r/s with Hen, because there’s proof there that Taylor’s lack of development in her own right isn’t about being a minor character. So is Karen, but she has constantly been a wonderfully developed character, her r/s with Hen has been consistently invested in since s1 so people care about what happens with the two of them, and Karen has volume as a character including little quirks (turned on by… frugality? OK, Karen, I guess you get to, because you’re too damn cute), struggles (depression when they failed to get pregnant) and small yet significant contributions to the plot (for example, being the character who solves the mystery of the blackout). So far in s5, Taylor has had none of these things, she’s barely been there. And even when starting to get a backstory, it seems to be tied into whether she’ll even stay with Buck, so it still doesn’t feel like she’s really getting a spot of her own.

So..
Maddie had to basically raise and care for her brother when she was pretty young (from what we can gather), she was in an abusive relationship where her husband  cut her off from family and friends, then when she finally managed to leave him he came back to stalk and kidnap her and stab her boyfriend, and she had to kill him. Then she was held hostage at the call center.
Buck had a difficult childhood (I think we’re safe to assume this much), then his sister left and it was obviously a big deal to him - and when she found him again she was almost killed by her abusive ex, he almost drowned and almost lost his friend’s son in a tsunami, had his leg crushed by a fire truck, had a pulmonary embolism, lost his job and his friends, his girlfriend left him because she couldn’t deal with the job, his other ex girlfriend used him as an emotional support crutch and then abandoned him without even giving him a clean break, his psychologist used her position of trust so she could sleep with him. Oh and his best friend / guy he’s clearly in love with was almost buried alive and.. it was never addressed again.
Athena’s fiancé was killed, she was almost killed by a serial killer, and her daughter almost killed herself, then she was kidnapped and almost killed again.
Bobby’s wife and children died tragically in a fire that he blames himself for.
Chim had an abusive dad, a mom who died when he was a teenager, he was bullied, his best friend sacrificed himself on a call and Chim was there to see it all, then he had a traumatic brain injury after a near-fatal car accident and his girlfriend left him right after, oh and he was catfished and stabbed by his girlfriend’s abusive ex-husband who then kidnapped her, and then she was kidnapped again at her place of work!
Eddie’s helicopter was shot down and his friend died, his son had to have multiple operations while he was away, his parents tried to take his son away from him, then his wife left him, twice, and then died in his arms. Then he was almost buried alive.
Hen was bullied, her relationship with her ex put her child’s safety in jeopardy, and she inadvertently caused a young girl’s death, oh and she almost died in the earthquake.
And most of the issues I listed don’t even include the stuff that happens to them on a day-to-day basis. Or any of the stuff that happened to Michael, Josh, Karen, Chris, May or Harry.
Now obviously, you could do a show that actually dives into the trauma of emergency responders, but that would be a very different tone. There’s always the question of how realistic can these shows really be in 45 minutes and still give us these crazy rescue scenarios (Tsunami?? Mudslide? Plane Crash? Check) AND emotional development each episode. Realistically, the 118 wouldn’t be the ones - or at least not the only ones - called in to save people on a failed water landing / plane crash in the ocean. Their area of operation wouldn’t span from the coastline doing abseiling rescues to trying to run down a hot air balloon to bank robberies to train crashes in the middle of nowhere.
So we also can’t expect them to be completely faithful to actual trauma psychology, because that would most probably make for boring TV, but even if it didn’t, it just COULDN’T be the show we love so much. They do give it some space, like showing Christopher dealing with nightmares, acknowledging the slower pacing of Madney’s relationship because of her past experiences, Bobby’s unwillingness to forgive himself, Eddie’s anger management issues and poor coping skills in general, Buck not giving himself time to heal properly because of his need to be defined by helping people so he can feel ‘worthy’, and some characters even get to go and see a psychologist - with mixed results, that also aren’t properly followed up on, and when Eddie says he didn’t click with the psychologist that’s seemingly also the end of him dealing with his anger issues. A lot of the time, the show acknowledges mental wellbeing once, and then drops it completely - like Buck’s abandonment issues being dealt with only as a set up for Abby to come back. Lone Star does a little better with Judd’s trauma from his entire team dying in front of him, and his survivor’s guilt, and how that affects his relationship.
BUT season 3 of 911 actually laid some good ground work with Eddie Begins, with Athena unsure of whether she will get back to work, with Hen considering changing careers, and Maddie and Chim’s relationship playing out the way it did. I really hope that a lot of the events in season 4 - the baby and the anxiety that comes with that (especially if you have shitty parents), May starting work as a 9-1-1 operator, Eddie and Buck going to Texas, Buck Begins, will circle back to some of these traumatic experiences and give them more room to breathe along with the new stuff that will inevitably come up. I mean we already know there’s going to be a freaking mudslide and LAVA and wildfires, so.
Maybe one of the reasons we love fanfiction is because it gives you room to explore a facet of the characters or their lives that isn’t given much room in the canon, maybe because it doesn’t fit the tone of the show or the writers are focusing somewhere else. I think it’s also the reason why buddie is so popular while actual canon ships are less so - it’s the same in a lot of fandoms. You’ll always have more fanfiction about the stuff you don’t get to explore on screen - the other relationships you already get to see played out, so it doesn’t feel as necessary to write about. So in fanfiction, we can give the characters space to breathe and deal with everything, and we can be realistic in how a new emergency doesn’t erase the trauma of past experiences, and how LONG it would actually take to deal with some of these issues in real life. There are SO many fanfiction out there in the 9-1-1 AO3 tag that do this so well, and that have a really good handle on how these characters would or could still be affected by this stuff, whether it’s panic attacks or nightmares or unhealthy coping mechanisms or emotional hang ups like guilt and feelings of inadequacy.(I think this is the reason why I tend to not like fanfiction that puts a heavy emphasis on headcanon for more trauma like kidnappings or abuse or childood trauma. There’s already so much stuff we have seen in the show, and in the hints we get about Buck’s childhood for example, I don’t need insult added to injury so to speak. But to each their own, obviously.) And I think that’s really cool and something we should talk about and seek out and write about, because it’s a huge reason why we care about these characters so much. And we should also continue to hold the show to a standard of not erasing the trauma, and give it space even when we’re realistic about how much space it can have in the kind of show 9-1-1 is.
So I guess that’s a long way of saying I’m excited it seems that season 4 will focus a lot more in depth on character and dealing with all the stuff I listed above. And I can’t wait to see where Buck’s abandonment issues come from, or how Eddie and Buck could bond over having shitty parents.

In Case of Emergency (Ch 7/10)
Ao3 | 2/13.3k | Buddie | Status: Incomplete
Prev. Chapter | Next Chapter
Chapter 7: You obviously haven't tried my cereal! Just a little slice of domesticity between Buck and Eddie, with Eddie planning on surprising Buck with a thankyou dinner for organising a Christmas that didn’t involve being apart from his son. Set post 3x10: Christmas Spirit.
All Eddie wanted to do was make Buck dinner as a thank you for playing a part in organising Christmas with everyone. He knew that even with Buck adamantly saying otherwise, that the main reason for it was for him and Chris. He saw the way Buck looked when Chris had asked to have Christmas with him, and he knew that Buck hated letting anyone down, especially Chris.
So, he had messaged Maddie, asking her to keep Buck distracted and out of the apartment for the afternoon while he got to work on a lasagne, sourcing the ingredients and letting himself into Buck’s apartment as a surprise for him when he got home. It was nothing extravagant, but he knew how much Buck appreciated a home-cooked meal and that it was one of his favourite meals.
It was no secret that he was not the best in the kitchen, oftentimes when they did have dinner at his place it involved either takeaway or Buck being the one doing the cooking. Which is why he thought he might try his hand at doing something unexpected, as a form of appreciation instead of more gifts.
Unfortunately for him, even with confidence, a well-laid plan and a solid recipe, a meal could be easily undone by a cook’s ineptitude and this time was no exception.
** ** ** ** ** ** **
It had been a few months since they’d had that morning conversation and things have been going steady for Eddie and Buck. It felt right and easy, easier than either of them could have thought it would be. They decided that day to go slowly, privately for the time being as they learned more of each other through this new lens of their relationship.
They were pretty sure that the others hadn’t picked up on anything different between them and they were perfectly content to keep a lid on their relationship in the workplace; that was something that they had made clear with each other at the very beginning, to keep their personal life separate from work, and away from prying eyes at least for the time being.
However, despite their attempts at keeping their relationship quiet for as long as possible, there was no escaping the observant eyes of one Maddie Buckley, who, after a couple of months of putting two and two together, eventually managed to coax the truth out of Buck before dinner one evening while Chim was still on the way from his apartment. She had been quick to both celebrate the development and promised that she’d keep their secret until they were ready to publicly be a couple.
Throughout those months Buck was over at Eddie’s more often, spending more and more time with him and Chris. By Christmastime, Buck was surprised to learn that he was Chris’s second choice after knowing that he couldn’t spend it with his dad. It was heart-warming to know that his boyfriend’s son already saw him as family enough to want to spend Christmas with him and, he couldn’t bear disappointing the kid.
It didn’t take much to get the idea set into motion, especially once he shared it with Athena and let her have full reign in getting everything organised. That day was his gift, making sure everyone in the team could still have the chance to celebrate Christmas on the day and in his head, he said it was for everyone but deep in his heart he knew the true reason was that it was always meant to be a gift for Eddie and Chris.
He never expected any sort of thank you, that was never the purpose nor the point of having Christmas in the firehouse, besides seeing everyone’s joy was thank you enough. He certainly never expected to find Eddie preparing dinner in his apartment while he’d been out with Maddie taking advantage of post-Christmas sales in the limbo week before New Year’s.
Even from the other side of the door, he could hear the sounds of someone in the kitchen and he grinned to himself knowing there to be only one person who had both the access and the comfortability to be in his apartment without him being present.
This was something that had become a common occurrence between each other. Letting themselves in regardless of whether or not the other was home, Buck doing it more often than Eddie; making themselves comfortable knowing that the other would be home soon. So, it was quite the pleasant surprise for the roles to be reversed especially as he saw the amusing sight of Eddie frowning at the dish in front of him, skewer in hand.
“What’s all this?” he uttered as a way of announcing his presence, unable to contain himself as he closed the door with his foot and watched as Eddie startle minutely as he placed the mysterious dish back in the oven before fiddling with the timer dial and then smoothly leaned one arm against the countertop beside him, in an attempt to mask his earlier surprise.
“And a hello to you too,” responded Eddie with that near mocking tone that Buck couldn’t help but love. It was enough for him to immediately drop the bags where he was standing and stride over to his partner, in more ways than one, and quickly kiss his lips in apology and greeting.
“Hey there,” he murmured as he loosely wrapped his arms around Eddie’s waist before breaking eye contact with Eddie as he surveyed the kitchen with a furrowed brow before returning his gaze back to Eddie’s, “I didn’t forget any plans, did I? If I knew you were here, I would’ve come home earlier.”
Eddie hummed contentedly and brought his arms around Buck, keeping their bodies impossibly close, “Nope, no plans. I just wanted to surprise you with dinner to thank you for what you did for Christmas.”
Touched that Eddie felt the need to thank him for something that he felt didn’t need thanks, he looked away bashfully, “I didn’t really do anything, just talked to Athena about it, she did all the work.”
“Don’t sell yourself short, I’m sure you did more than you let on. No matter, it meant the world to Chris,” Eddie tilted his head up and claimed Buck’s lips with his own before parting once again, “and to me, so thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Buck said softly, and pecked him on the lips once more before stepping out of Eddie’s arms and moved past him to look over the saucepans still holding some of the leftover sauces, “So, what did you decide to make?”
With his back to Eddie, he didn’t see the frown fall on his face, but he could hear the hint of barely concealed irritation colour his voice, “Lasagne. I was hoping Maddie would keep you out for a bit longer, so it’d be ready by the time you got home, but it’s not going exactly how I planned.”
“I knew she was up to something, there was just something in the way she was acting.” Buck shook his head as he murmured to himself, bemused, now understanding the conniving glint in his sister’s eyes.
“Anything I can help with?” he asked Eddie as he sampled both of the sauces and felt his mouth water in response, half surprised how well they’ve turned out.
Eddie hip-checked Buck to move him away from the oven door as the timer went off and reclaimed the oven mitts to bring the dish out of the oven. The cheesy top was a deep golden at this point and the edges were darkened to a near-burned look.
Buck watched with mild amusement as Eddie skewered it again and groaned in frustration, “Only if you know anything about softening the pasta sheets, I used the oven- ready ones because they were supposed to be easy but they’re still crunchy in there. I hoped that maybe the extra ten minutes I put it in for would’ve helped.”
Seeing the tension in Eddie’s shoulders and knowing how much he hated feeling like he was failing at something, Buck crowded up behind him, placing his hands on Eddie’s hips and pressed a kiss to his shoulder as he peeked over, reaching around to make his own assessment.
“Not all hope is lost just yet. We might be able to salvage this with some boiling water, plastic wrap, and foil,” he said thoughtfully as he stepped back and leveraged himself up to sit on the island bench unfazed as Eddie looked at him expectantly before frowning.
“Oh, I see, by we you mean me?” he responded in playful sarcasm with a hand on his hip as he took in Buck’s new position.
Buck laughed and spread his hands in an open gesture, “Eds, I am entirely confident that you can do this without me.”
“Except for the fact that I have no idea what I’m doing. This isn’t part of the recipe.” Eddie shot back a hint of anxiety in his voice, causing Buck to relent in his teasing, and clearly explained what needed to be done, suppressing a smile when Eddie’s face flooded with relief over having instructions to follow.
Half an hour later, he was watching with bated breath as Eddie cut through the now soft and pliable layers of the lasagne, looking as though he expected the dish to be completely inedible, much like the few dinners he’d attempted in the past.
It seemed in Eddie’s eyes it was nothing short of a miracle, considering his track record, and he voiced as much as they ate at the table, asking how he could have possibly known how to salvage their dinner aside from scraping off the sauces and trying again with a different pasta.
“Believe it or not, I did the exact same thing the first time I made it after moving away from home.”  Buck shrugged as he answered between mouthfuls, “and then searched online how to fix it without losing the whole batch.”
“Damn, and here I was thinking that you figured it out all on your own.”
“Sorry to disappoint but the internet is and will always be my best friend when it comes to cooking, it has yet to fail me on fixing any meal.” Buck proclaimed and then added as an aside, “not to mention, Bobby is a vault when it comes to problem-solving food.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Shortly thereafter as the dinner itself came to a close, the topic of conversation gravitated to Buck's shopping when Eddie’s eyes drifted to the abandoned bags by the door, reminding Buck of the gift that he’d almost forgotten about until now, having been caught up in the domestic vision of seeing his boyfriend cooking for him.
“Now I know you said Christmas lunch was a gift in and of itself, but I ordered this well before I even came up with that idea and it seems even more fitting that you get it now.”
He watched with pursed lips as he slid the already wrapped present across the table to Eddie, suppressing what was probably a shit-eating grin as he did so, knowing exactly how Eddie was going to react.
Eddie eyed it suspiciously as he opened it before standing arms outstretched as he dryly read the words out loud, “I can’t cook for shit, but it’s my turn.”
“Flip it over,” Buck suggested with a snort unable to contain the amusement of his own joke to himself especially when he could see how much effort Eddie was putting into trying to keep a straight face as he continued, “who says I can’t cook? You obviously haven’t tried my cereal!”
“One side for me and one side for Chris,” Buck supplied lightly, barely able to keep the laugh from his voice.
Eddie rolled his eyes in mock annoyance but couldn’t maintain the façade, eventually breaking down into chuckles as he threw the apron back in his face, “you’re a menace.”
“You know you love it,” Buck responded smugly.
“Hmm,” Eddie hummed thoughtfully, coyly playing off his amusement as he bracketed Buck’s body with his arms and distracted him with a kiss before speaking against Buck’s lips, “that’s for me to know and for you to find out.”

Destiel, Buddie: the great love patterns and one failure.
I'm going to highlight the patterns of baiting and good storytelling. Chim sounds like the Sam to Dean!Buck. Cas!Eddie and Claire/Jack!Chris.
WARNING: not a negative post, this is from a destielshipper!POV looking to something so beautiful like 9-1-1.
As someone pointed out: if Eddie was a girl they would've already get laid. Same thing with Dean if Cas was a girl.
Tumblr media
(my gifs)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know Dean and Buck like to get laid with many girls...and have some homo-joke-scenes with guys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dean Winchester being a disaster bi (since S1)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(+ Josh and roomate!Albert - I know someone ships it xD) What I really enjoyed with Buck/Abby is the meaning of the storyline. D (who likes older women also) and B always get the part of having fun, and when it comes to express their feelings, not all their crushes understand their soul and they don't always admit those with themselves.
Abby: I think I was afraid that If I came back, I would become that person again. Because I missed you. I wanted to see you. But I didn’t trust myself.
Buck: Because being there, being with me, you might lose yourself again?
Shannon: I can’t fail him again, or you and I won’t. I’m still learning how to be someone’s mother and after that maybe I can be someone’s wife.
Eddie [to Bobby]: [...] she wanted a divorce. And I’m still mad. How stupid is that? I’m agry at a dead person and at myself because I forgave her for everything, and that wasn’t enough. I wasn’t enough.
Buck [to Maddie]: You’re never the one getting left behind. You’re the one who leaves. You don’t know what’s like to watch someone you love walk away.
Dean [to Lisa]: When I do picture myself happy...it’s with you.
Lisa:  You've got so much buried in there, and you push it down, and you push it down. Do you honestly think that you can go through life like that and not freak out? Just, what, drink half a fifth a night and you're good? Dean: You knew what you signed up for.
Lisa: Yeah. But I didn't expect Sam to come back. And I'm glad he's okay. I am. But the minute he walked through that door, I knew. It was over. You two have the most unhealthy, tangled-up, crazy thing I've ever seen. And as long as he's in your life, you're never gonna be happy. That came out so much harsher than I meant. Dean: It's not your fault.
Who does understand them? The best friend. Cas and Eddie are the best friends to who they talk to, they can feel judged by but it doesn't really matter (or it DOES); they trust each other and feel safe.
you gave up an entire army for one guy (dean)
thank you, for not giving up
 stupid for the right reasons
maybe you could’ve come at it a little differently
The Abby-phase was very important 'cause B wanted to stop to think about just the sex part and really connect with the person, doin' romantic stuff, even VDay; feelings were in the game.
(He literally asked to the firetruck!girl to see her again...but she said no. Ali? She acted like a Lisa.)
B really tried to find someone and always felt left behind. D had two important relationships, one with Cassie (yeah, that's fun) and I liked her -but he couldn't have a black girlfriend, right(?). Always felt left behind, by his father, by his brother, his mother’ memories were a lie.
When we first see Cassie, they didn’t see each other in a very long time and they get a reunion during a case.
Tumblr media
Much like Eddie and Shannon.
(not saying also this...but....this)
Tumblr media
Lisa and the weird-and-bad-written-originally story with Amara...who knew Dean bc of his 'dark' side. (Amara has found Cas and Dean’s profound connection and Dean was scared by her darkness connected to his anger and loniless).
At one point Amara will find Dean thanks to Cas's heart  just my reply to go fast  (while Cas was possessed by Lucifer- an annoying bitch who is used as a destiel bait)
We know Buck for his autodiagnosed sex addiction with women and Eddie as a married man with a son and wife not in the picture...and the episode- I'm so sorry, but the beginning of S2 with Buddie can't be described as two hets - there are tropes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We start to fall for them and Chim with Maddie, wait- Sam!Chim and Eileen!Maddie.
Sam and Eileen’ first episode is basically a blind date on a hunt. They flirt and make a badass duo, she's deaf and super sassy and they're so sweet together. Many start to ship it asap.
I cried with Madney asap.
What does Maddie do since Buck start talking about Chris and Eddie? Yeah.
What does happen in Fanfiction with Sam (he’s a Maddie here) and when Saileen comes back on S15?
Bros shipping their bros with their best friends, mirroring them.
Madney have Buddie patterns.
Saileen is presented as a Het!Destiel parallel...and they can kiss.
Sam asks Dean if he could start thinking about settle down with someone who understand the life, another hunter. Eileen is a hunter. Cas is an angel - the one who raised him from perdition and got lost for his beautiful soul/hunter.
I LOVE that Eddie can be just a friend to Lena and Marjan, basically (I hope not to see this ruined in the future).
Now, over the line: Dean has a mother figure in Bobby!Jody and Jody is shipped with Athena!Donna (also good friend to Dean) and he's got a sister figure in Hen!Charlie.
[Jody, Charlie]
(Jody and Donna have many daugthers figures and a spin-off who hasn't been picked bc too many poc girls, queer girls and two not young women with perfect bodies.)
Bobby!Jody helped him with his mother-plot-fiasco (that was really bad) and I loved Mary before s12.
[I'm having fun thinking about this connections, leave me alone if it'ss just a great big illusion]
I forgive you / of course I forgive you
personal space / personal space
Destiel, uncle!Sam and Jack
Destiel, uncle!Sam and Claire
*love is in the air*
oh and beside the MurphyPatterns (Klaine, Bryan&David) we do have the KripkePatterns also (Timeless, The Boys 2 3 )
One of the most loud BI!Dean eps
I’m ready for some domestic Buddie and Madney
Eileen and Cas back from the dead
Just to make you all laugh after this big movie, remember the chars:
what a destiel scene always looks like
THE END:
Yes, C*W and Fox aren’t the same, and yes producers can make the difference. all SPN writers WEREN’T the problem, directors neither, not to mention the actors.
C*W thrived on Destiel for 12 years, building a very good story that could’ve show two men accepting the love they deserved....but they failed, erasing every other (lgbtq, poc, disable) characters.
Fox doesn’t need more viewers but they WILL gain more of them showing Buddie because representation of a M/M ship with BI/PAN (I see Pan!Eddie) it’s a huge thing for TV and it matters. I always see gay love not many other possibilities, with Murphy mostly, he can make the change again.
A reminder to what C*W did

hey, could you come over?
Eddie was perfectly okay with ignoring and doing nothing about his feelings for his best friend, then Buck gets Christopher a modified skateboard.
(read it on AO3)
happy birthday, @buckleysbabe! 💖 💖 💖 i hope you like this!
It was getting close to seven pm and Eddie was driving over to Buck's place. That in itself definitely wouldn't be something out of the ordinary. However, what was out of the ordinary, was the message he got from Buck resulting in his visit. Christopher was at abuela's, he has been in a bad mood lately following the skateboard accident at school, quieter, dejected, which did not suit the joyful, bright little boy at all, and so abuela proposed teaching Christopher how to make enchiladas because the boy loved to help his bisabuela in the kitchen, and so Eddie said yes, of course he did. Which is why he was home alone sitting on the couch, not actually watching what was happening on the screen of the tv when he got the text from Buck.
Reaching his best friend's apartment, Eddie turns off the engine and takes his phone in his hand to reread Buck's message again.
(6:24 PM) Buck: Hey man, could you come over? (6:24 PM) Buck: There is something I'd like to show you (6:25 PM) Buck: If that's okay
See? Weird. The thing about him and Buck, is that since the very day they met, after Buck got over his little inferiority complex, that is, they were oddly comfortable in each others company. Normally, if Eddie comes over to Buck's place, or the other way around, which is to say it never starts with a direct invitation. It's always hey man, I just bought two packs of beer if you are in the mood for some or feel free to join in trying to contain an 8-year-old on a sugar high. The two of them always seem to be able to communicate without actually having to say what they want or need. Which is how Eddie found himself being introduced to Carla or Buck suddenly felt Eddie bumping his shoulder into his outside the operating room in the hospital, waiting for news about Chim after Maddie's kidnapping. That's just how they were, Eddie and Buck, Buck and Eddie, always knowing what the other needs and offering it without being asked. But, now? He has no idea why his best friend would ask him to come over like that, making it sound like Eddie was doing him a favor, sounding nervous of all things.
Eddie has an unsettling feeling in his stomach as he gets out of his car and starts walking towards the front door which he doesn't usually feel while in the company of Buck, not counting the way his body lights up when the other man looks at him with his mouth pulled into a teasing grin or stands just a bit closer than necessary, which, yeah, let's just ignore that.
He knocks on the door and waits for a few minutes, getting nervous by the second. He is wiping his sweating hands into his pants when the door finally opens and his best friend's face appears.
"Hi." He says.
"Eddie, hey." Buck breaths out as he opens the door wider, Eddie can actually see the nervous lines around his eyes now, which does not help him at all in trying to slow down the beating of his heart.
The two of them stands around awkwardly for a few moments, then Buck steps aside to let him inside. "Right, come on in."
Eddie walks into the apartment and for the first time, he doesn't make himself at home. He could almost say nothing changed since the last time he was over, if not for the conspicuous cleanliness. Buck wasn't usually a messy person, so it's not like his place being clean was weird in itself, but somehow the apartment seemed almost too clean. Not a single plate in the sink, no book on the coffee table, even his best friend's shoes were in strict order. Something was definitely going on.
"So..." He heard the man in question say from behind him, and he turned around to see him wringing his hands. "I asked you to come over."
"You did."
"There is something I want to show you."
"So you've said..." Eddie said and it almost sounded like a question with the way his was getting more and more confused by Buck's behavior. "Is everything okay?"
"Yes!" The other man said a bit louder than necessary, startling both of them. "I mean, yes. Yeah. Everything is great. It's just... I called you here because I did something."
... What?
"Nothing bad!" Buck said instantly, clearly taking in the suspicous expression on Eddie's face. "I mean, I hope. I did something but not like, like something illegal."
Eddie snorted. "Buck, just tell me." He said fondly, because how could he not. Somehow seeing Buck this nervous and having trouble voicing what he wants to say calmed him.
"Okay, so... you know how after Christopher's skateboard accident, we talked about how you didn't know how to have that conversation with him?" And there went Eddie's calmness. "Like what to actually tell him if he asks why can't he go skateboarding?"
It was no secret how much pain it caused Eddie to say no to Christopher when it came to doing mundane things his classmates did on a daily basis without a trouble, to deny him anything at all. That kid deserved everything good in life and more.
"Yeah." Eddie answered tensely.
"Now, after that conversation, I started thinking." Buck said and started to walk towards the stairs, facing Eddie while walking backwards. Eddie walked after him. "And thinking turned into furious googling," Eddie snorted, because that's just so Buck. "-and I found this article about this boy, João Vicente, who was born with CP, just like Chris and he was able to skateboard thanks to these guys who make these awesome skateboards, modified ones that allows disabled kids to experience what non-disabled kids can and just help them live a fuller life, you know." He said as he kept waving his hands around while explaining. "And I was thinking how Chris deserves this. He deserves to life life to the fullest, because he is amazing. He is so selfless and kind and smart and he has a heart of gold and he is the bravest person I've ever met. He- He deserves everything." Buck said softly as he looked up at him and by that point Eddie forgot how to breath. "Anyway, I contacted these two guys who developed these skateboards and asked them how long it would take for the skateboard to arrive." What? "And it arrived! Today!" Buck said excitedly and nervously at the same time as he turned around to motion his hands in a "ta-da" sort of way, revealing a skateboard equipped with frames and straps, trying to gauge Eddie's reaction.
... who was standing there frozen, unable to form any words, eyes burning, staring at his best friend and the modified skateboard. The skateboard that would allow his son to do something he never would have been able to otherwise. The one Buck got Christopher so he could experience what it was like to do the things he desperately wanted to with the other kids, so he would feel included and equal.
Before it even realised in him that he moved, Eddie was standing before Buck, reaching up to cradle his face in his hands and pulling him down, cutting off his stuttering. He distantly registered Buck taking in a startled breath and then he was closing the last bit of space between them, pressing his lips against Buck's. For a few seconds, that could have been minutes or even hours, everything was still and then Eddie started to move his lips gently over Buck's, pouring every single emotion into the action. Gratefulness, relief, joy, fondness, love.
And then Buck was kissing him back.
Their hands wandered, Buck's settling on his waist and squeezing, while one of Eddie's slowly sneaked its way into his best friend's hair, the other finding that secure place in the junction of Buck's neck and shoulder, thumb pressing into his pulse. They stayed like that as everything else faded into the background, the sound of the cars outside Buck's window, the ticking of the clock on the wall, the distant sound of the water dripping from the tap.
They slowly pull away to take a breath, pressing their foreheads together. Eddie pulls back while not letting go of Buck, never letting go.
"You are something else entirely, you know that?" He says fondly, looking into his best friend's eyes, no doubt presenting a hopeless case of heart-eyes, but it doesn't matter because Buck's face is the perfect reflection of his, soft lines and warmth. The other man raises his hand up to Eddie's jaw, cradling it as he tenderly swipes his thumb across his best friend's chin.
"Stay over?" Buck whispers into the air between them, pulling him closer against his chest, making him chuckle.
"As if I'd ever leave." Eddie says fondly.
Buck leans in to run the tip of his nose over Eddie's chin, tickling him with his breath as he says, "We could pick up Chris from your abuela's place in the morning before work and take him to school, then we could take him skateboarding the day after."
Eddie pulls back to press his lips to his best friend's again, smiling as he whispers, "Can't wait."
They would have to talk about this, about what they were to each other, but for now, it could wait. They already knew everything that mattered.

4K words, Angst, Hurt, gunshot wounds
Summary: Buck and Eddie have been dating for a year when Buck suggests they record videos for each other in case one of them dies.
“It’s weird Buck.” Eddie says. He turned his back on him and started doing the dishes. He put a lot of energy to his tasks, he was either trying his best to clean up a dirty plate, or he was mad about when Buck had just suggested.
Of course, Buck knew him enough to know it was the latter.
“It’s not weird, Eddie." Buck answered. He took a couple steps toward his boyfriend, keeping his tone calm because he could feel Eddie was upset. "Our job is dangerous and we both know we can die. We’ve just updated our will because we know the risk. I just want to make sure that if anything happens to me, you will have something better than a piece of paper saying that you can have my jeep and the few dollars I have at the bank.”
“Yeah. But a video? I don’t know. I just don’t want to think about losing you.”
“I don’t want to think about that either. But I just made one for Maddie, Chim and my niece and one for Christopher. If anything happens to me, I just want you to have something to remember me by.”
Eddie stopped cleaning and practically threw the sponge on the kitchen counter. He let his head down and sighed. He hated to think about losing Buck.
"You almost drowned last year." Buck added. He didn't want to talk about that ever again and saying those words hurted him as much as it hurted Eddie. "I remember every single minute of that day Eddie."
“It’s the day you told me you loved me," Eddie said. He will always remember lying in this ambulance, shaking from the cold and the adrenaline leaving his body, his best friend by his side. Buck was so quiet, so scared, and the words barely left his mouth, but he said them. He told Eddie he loved him on the ride to the hospital. The two of them had stayed silent all the rest of the way, stunned about the unplanned confession.
“It’s the day I almost lost you, Eddie." Buck remembered. "You went under and I thought you died. I thought I would lose you before I had a chance to tell you how I feel. I never want to relive something like that, but if something happens to one of us, I don't want to leave anything unsaid."
Eddie turned to face Buck. He wasn't the only one having a hard time with this conversation, Buck looked like he was about to cry. Eddie erased the distance between them and put his hands on Buck's cheeks.
"Please" the blond begged.
"Okay," Eddie agreed, he placed a tender kiss on his boyfriend's lips. "I'll do it. I'll make a video. But only because you're not allowed to die before I do."
(only) three weeks after that day.
The station was really quiet when Bobby entered the loft. They were halfway through a 24-hours shift. Hen and Chimney had turned the TV on but none of them were paying much attention to what’s playing. They were too exhausted to speak, but they were there for each other, even without saying a word. He finally understood the energy that it takes to be a parent, so he enjoyed the quiet moments as much as she did. She had offered to take his baby girl for a night, but he was already over protective of her. Every time her best friend’s phone buzzed, Hen knew he received a picture of his daughter. Karen and Maddie were having a playdate with their daughters. They hoped that both Nia and Joy would be as tired as their parents when they go home from their shift.
Buck and Eddie were catching some well-deserved rest in the bunker. They were officially together for almost a year, and Bobby was okay with it. He was not always happy about having a relationship in his house, but they both proved to him that they made an amazing team, they have always been. He trusted them to be professional and if Buck needed Eddie to be his pillow during their nap so he could be well rested on their call, it was none of Bobby’s business. The bed was way too small for two firefighters, but Buck had his head and most of his upper body on top of Eddie’s chest, enjoying his boyfriend's hands in his hair. Eddie was too nervous to fall asleep, but Buck was so relaxed he was drowsing. He could fall asleep anywhere as long as Eddie was by his sides.
The alarm rang and everyone was on their feet in a matter of seconds. Adrenaline replacing the exhaustion. They hopped in the truck and drove toward where the dispatcher operator was leading them. Buck vaguely recognized Josh’s voice through Bobby’s radio. He loved his sister, but it was always easier for him to focus on the job with another dispatcher. He remembered how terrified she was when he called her the day of the tsunami and he never wants to cause his sister such a scare again. The fire was in a huge warehouse, so it would probably take time to put it out, but dispatch said it was abandoned, which would make it easier to put it out when without having to worry about any civilian getting hurt. Josh stayed on the line to relay the information he had on the building. Bobby divided his teams in two, telling them to be on alert for possible victims, just in case the place was not as empty as they were told.
Eddie and Buck were the last to enter the building. They checked the east corner. Something seemed a little off about this place, but they are too focused on the fire to know what. The smoke was quite thick and they could barely see each other through it.
One of the rooms was locked and they needed to force it open to put the fire out.
“Bobby, I think we’ve located the source of the fire, but the door is locked.” Eddie called over his radio.
“Do you need help?”
“Buck’s on it.” Eddie replied, leaving the decision to send more men to his captain. “But whatever is behind this door it’s burning quickly, cap.”
“Copy that. I’m sending help your way”.
Buck got the door open and they both entered, trying to control the fire the best they could. Every box in the room was burning and it was hard to know where to start. But they quickly jumped into action. The men Bobby had sent have arrived and they all worked on controlling the fire. The fire was loud and they could barely hear each other. Eddie had his back turned on Buck for a second. He heard a small sound through the loud noise of all the boxes burning. The sound of metal pieces hitting the wall. He looked around, noticing shells flying over his head. The building was not abandoned, it was a warehouse full of ammunition.
When Eddie understood where they were it was too late. Buck was no longer behind him; he was lying on the floor, bleeding. Eddie’s whole world began to blur.
The man he loved when on the ground and Eddie couldn’t see the fire anymore, all he could focus on was the face of his boyfriend, in pain. He kneeled by his side and opened his turnout coat, noticing at least 3 holes in the material of the jacket. One of them didn’t get to him, but the others ripped the coat and found their way through Buck’s flesh. The injured man looked confused.
Everything happened too fast. The boxes he tried to put out were filled with bullets, and when the fire was hot enough for the powder ignite they flew off their shell cases  and Buck was shot. The fire was not out yet, but Eddie could feel the heat anymore. All he could see through the helmet was the panic inside Buck's eyes. It hurted so much to see those gorgeous blue eyes he loved so much filling up with tears. The other firefighters tried to talk to Eddie but he didn't hear them. His hands were both on Buck's stomach, trying to stop the bleeding. He didn't even register that the flames were gone, he only noticed Chim and Hen appearing on his side and taking over and applying pressure to Buck's wound.
He didn't want to let go. He couldn't. He followed them in the ambulance, the feeling of déjà-vu was tearing him apart. He wiped a tear away from his boyfriend's cheek, but they kept falling. They were his. He didn't know when he started crying. And he couldn't stop.
That was the worst case scenario Buck had planned for. This is why he recorded a video three weeks before.
“I hope you’re watching this and thinking ‘Wow, he looks so young’ because that would mean you’re watching this, decades from now. Meaning that you and I grew old together, had a full life together. I want nothing more than to see you become an old grumpy grandpa who tells our grandkids about the time you and I saved someone’s life.”
The doctors took Buck away and Eddie felt like they took his heart out of his chest. He watched them disappearing with the man he loved more than life itself. The doors closed and Eddie felt his legs giving up under him. His knees met the floor before he realized what was going on. Hen and Chim held him up and guided him toward the nearest chair. He stayed silent. He knew his friends were worried about him, he could see it on their face. But he couldn’t care about anything but Buck at this moment. If they had tried to talk about it, he would have blamed the exhaustion from their shift. Buck couldn’t die. He wasn’t allowed to die before him.
“I love you, Eddie Diaz. So much that a part of me wishes you’re watching this. Because if you are, it means that I’m the one who died, in two days or 40 years I don’t know, but it also means that I've never lost you. That no matter how long my life was, I spent all of it by your side.”
They waited so long to be together, too long, probably. Eddie refused to accept that he only had one year with the man he loved so much. They were supposed to have a lifetime together to make up for the lost time. He started wringing his hands, picking the skin where blood was starting to dry. He couldn’t look at anything else but his hands.
“You're not the man in my dreams Eddie, cause I could've never dreamed of finding one person that makes me so happy, I didn't think I deserved it. You proved me wrong. You turned my life into a dream I didn't dare to have.”
Eddie had plans for the three of them, so many plans. When Buck mentioned the video, Eddie hated the idea of thinking about their death. But if he was honest, it loved the idea of Buck making plans for their future. The video was proof that they were together until the very end. Buck had no doubt that they would; it was a “til death do us part” situation. So Eddie knew that day in the kitchen when he was kissing his boyfriend, that he wouldn’t be his boyfriend for much longer. Soon he would make him his husband.
Eddie’s fingers circled his empty ring finger, the emptiness on his hand echoing with the void he was feeling inside his chest. That wasn’t how things were supposed to go. His brain was planning now for the worst scenarios. He was a field medic. He knew how bad Buck’s condition was. Every time he saw a doctor coming toward his direction, he imagined them telling him that he lost someone he loved, again.
“You made a dad out of me, and I love our son so much. I love you two with all my heart and I loved every second I spent with you. You and Chris didn't just show me how to be a better man, you showed me how to live, to love.”
Hours went by without any news on Buck’s condition. Chimney and Hen had to go back to the station to finish their shift. Chimney couldn’t tell Maddie over the phone, especially when they had no news on Buck, nothing any of them could do to help him. He promised Eddie he would bring Maddie to the hospital as soon as he could, but he was pretty sure Eddie didn’t listen to anything he or Hen had said after the doctors took Buck away. Except for the tears he shed in the ambulance without even realising it, Eddie hadn’t cried. He stopped responding to them. They both worried about him, but had no choice but to leave him.
“I don't know how I lived the first 26 years of my life without you in it. I only know that I would do everything all over again if this leads me back to you.”
Their shift was officially over now and Carla was probably waiting for them to go pick Christopher up. He thought about his son and the conversation he was not ready to have with him.
Eddie replayed every moment of the fire in his mind, trying to understand how he could have missed it. He didn’t have Buck’s back. He might lose him because he didn’t protect him like he promised to. The images of Buck, bleeding, wouldn’t leave him. The pain, the terror, the agony. He dug his nails harder against his skin, trying to get rid of these images.
“No matter what will happen, I need you to remember you are not alone.”
Bobby was the first to arrive at the hospital at the end of the shift. Eddie was in the same chair he was when Chimney and Hen left. He hasn’t moved. Bobby knelt by his side, to force Eddie to look at him. The man was still covered in Buck’s blood. He must have touched his face to dry his tears, cause they were blood under his eyes and cheeks too.
“Eddie, why don’t we go clean yourself a little?” Bobby said in his most paternal tone.
“Buck needs me to have his back.” Eddie sounded confused, like he was on the field with him all over again. His voice was more broken than he wanted to show and Bobby looked at him with pity. So Eddie cleared his voice before saying in a more confident tone that would hopefully get Bobby’s out of his back; “I’m not leaving him.”
“You’re not leaving.” His captain reassured him, he took both Eddie’s hands in his. “We’re just getting you clean, okay?”
“You’re the strongest person I know. But don’t try to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Don’t try to be a tough guy. Don’t push people away.”
Bobby tried to help Eddie’s back on his feet to guide him to the bathroom, but Eddie removed his hands from Bobby’s grip. He followed his captain to the bathroom in silence. The vision in the mirror was horrible, yet Eddie couldn’t care less. The two of them didn’t exchange a word as they watched Buck’s blood disappearing down the sink. The absence of reaction from Eddie was worrying Bobby.
“That’s it.” He said. “You don’t want Buck to see you with all the blood when he’ll wake up.”
“The patronizing tone might work on Buck, but I’m not him, Bobby. And I know what his chances are. I know how to take care of myself, I don't need a babysitter.” Eddie snapped. Bobby tried not to be offended by his tone. He knew Eddie wasn’t angry at him. “He might not wake up and we both know that.”
“I’m sure he will, Eddie” Bobby said, he knew better than to promise him anything. Hen and Chimney told him how bad the situation was and he couldn’t promise things would be okay. “Have you called Carla?
Eddie shook his head. He dried his hands with the paper towels and threw them before leaving the bathroom.
“Do you want me to do it? To ask her to bring Christopher here?”
“What am I going to tell him?”
“Tell him the truth. Tell him that Buck is fighting. He’s strong, Eddie. If someone can survive this, it’s Buck.”
“I don’t know if I can tell him that we might lose Buck. He’s been through enough already.”
“Christopher’s gonna need you to be strong for him. You think you can do that?”
Eddie nodded. He was already doing his best not to fall apart. But it took Bobby advice. They went back to the waiting room, Bobby called Carla to let her know what was going on.
“You’re allowed to feel whatever you want to feel. It’s okay to be angry, it’s okay to cry. I know you and Chris have each other, and I know you are gonna be okay eventually cause that boy is as strong as his dad. The idea of not being with you guys is hurting me in so many ways, but I just know deep in my bones that you two can do everything as long as you are together. Be there for each other, but don’t hide your pain. I know you always have a hard time letting your guard down, but if something happens to me, I don’t want you to bury your feelings Eddie.”
Twenty minutes after Bobby’s call, Carla arrived at the hospital with Christopher. He rushed toward his dad as soon as he entered the hospital, letting his crushes fall on the floor when he saw his dad. Eddie could bottle his emotion pretty well, he has done it after Shannon’s death, but he couldn’t fool Christopher. Seeing his son made it too real and he did his best not to fall apart.
“Are you okay dad? Carla said Buck was hurt and you look sad.” The boy asked.
Eddie looked up to Bobby and thought about his advice. His boss told him to be strong for his son.
“Show Christopher that he can be sad. He needs to know that boys can cry.”
“I am sad.” He admitted to his son only, he felt uncomfortable having to say these words in front of Bobby and Carla but there was no way he could hide his feelings from his son. He didn’t want to. Thanks to his therapy with Frank and some conversations with Buck he knew better than to force himself to be strong. “Very sad. You know how much I love Buck. I know you do too.”
“Is he going to be okay?”
“I hope so. I really do. But I can’t promise you something I don’t know.” Eddie confessed.
“Last week you told me Buck was going to be with us forever.” Christopher said. His little voice was shaking. He already knew what losing a parent felt like.
“I asked you if you would want for me and Buck to be together forever.”
Bobby overheard the conversation, and understood what Eddie had asked his son. He took Carla’s arm and took a few steps back to leave the Diaz have their privacy.
“And I said yes, daddy.” The kid said with so much sadness that Eddie’s tears were flooding his face again. “You said that if Buck said yes too we’ll be a family forever. I don’t want Bucky to die please.”
“I don’t want that either, baby. But that’s not in our control.”
“I hope that by the time you’re watching this, he’s a grown man. Maybe he even has a son of his own. Can you imagine the two of us, in the hospital, holding our grandson for the first time? I know I can. When it comes to us, I can picture our future, so clearly.”
Chris came on Eddie’s lap and buried his face in his father’s arm. Eddie could feel his son crying against him.
“You're the love of my life, Eddie. You're my favorite person, my future, my… everything.”
A nurse came toward them, Eddie braced himself for the conversation he was going to have.
“You’re Mr Buckley’s family?” he asked them.
“We are.” Eddie answered standing up to meet the nurse, Christopher stayed by his side, grabbing his dad’s coat with all his strength.
“It was a tough surgery and Mr Buckley lost a lot of blood.”
“And if I died, know that I died the happiest man on earth cause I get to be loved by you.”
Eddie felt like he was gonna pass out, but the nurse gave him a reassuring smile.
“He’s going to be okay.” the nurse said.
“It was all worth it Eddie. You were worth it."
“He is?” Eddie needed to be sure.
“He is. Your dad is very strong, little man.” The nurse told Christopher. “He’s asleep, but we’ll move him in a room so you two can see him”.
“He’s alive.” Eddie repeated. “He’s alive”. He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in.
He’s alive, and Eddie didn’t have to listen to the video that day. He hoped he would have never to. Eddie would do anything in his power to never see the day where he’d sit in a room and listen to Buck’s last words. He wanted so many things for their family and he swore to himself that he would stop wasting their precious time.
Christopher stopped crying, but seeing Buck on a hospital bed still, made his heart clenched in his chest. Eddie wanted him to go home with Carla but he refused to go anywhere until his Buck was awake. He really was his fathers’ son. Eddie laid his son on the couch against the wall. He tucked his son with the covers the nurse brought them and kissed his son, telling him that he would wake him up when Buck would be awake. He sat in the chair near the bed and took Buck’s hand in his.
A few hours went by until the anesthesia wore off. Eddie could feel Buck’s fingers slowly moving against his hand. He used his other hand and brushed a strand of hair from Buck’s face.
“That’s it, baby. Come back to us.”
When he opened his eyes, Eddie could see they were still glassy and full of pain. He hated to see Buck that way.
"I'm not dead...” Buck started to cheer Eddie up a little. “...yet." he added to lighten the mood.
Eddie shook his head. He was too emotionally drained to laugh and he knew that if he had any tears left he would be crying again. Buck squeezed his hand, reminding him that he was still here.
“Someone told me I wasn’t allowed to die.”
“Never” Eddie said. He placed a kiss on Buck’s forehead. He could see that Buck was struggling to stay awake, so he didn’t wake Christopher up. Buck would be okay, and they would have all the time in the world to be together.
"You saved me.” Buck said before closing his eyes.
"I didn't.” Eddie replied. He was sure Buck had fallen asleep already. So he sat back in his chair, never letting go of Buck’s hand.
"You and Chris did.” Buck whispered. “You gave me a reason to fight.”
"I love you so much." he said to an already asleep Buck. That's exactly what he told him one year before. Except that he was the one lying in a hospital bed last time and Buck was the one holding his hand. But one year ago, Eddie confessed his feeling back to Buck and they have been happy ever since. Because through the best or the worst, they were together.
Yeah, one day he would make him his husband, Eddie swore to himself. But for now they just fall back to sleep, knowing they would have a future together.
